What is the Desert?
A desert is a barren
area of land where little
precipitation occurs and
consequently living
conditions are hostile
for plant and animal
life.
Introduction of Sahara Desert
 The Sahara is the largest hot desert.
 Its surface area of 9,400,000 square kilometers
(3,600,000 sq. mi) including the Libyan Desert is comparable
to the respective land areas of China and United State.
 The desert contains much of the land found within North
Africa, excluding the fertile coastal region situated against the
Mediterranean Sea, the Atlas Mountains of the Mahgreb, and
the Nile Valley of Egypt and Sudan.
A satellite image of the Sahara Desert
Countries:
Algeria, Chad, Egypt, Libya, Mali,Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Sudan,Tunisia
Highest Point:
Lowest Point:
11,204 ft (3,415 m)
-436 ft (-133 m)
Length: Width:
4800 km (2983 mi) 1800 km (1118 mi)
Temperature:
 The average high temperature exceeds 38 °C (100.4 °F) - 40 °C
(104 °F) during the hottest month nearly everywhere in the desert
except at very high mountainous areas.
 The highest officially recorded average high temperature around
47 °C (116.6 °F) in July.
 It's the world's highest recorded average high temperature.
Precipitation:
 The average annual rainfall ranges from very low in the
northern and southern fringes of the desert to nearly non-
existent over the central and the eastern part.
 The thin northern fringe of the desert receives more winter
cloudiness and rainfall due to the arrival of low pressure
systems over the Mediterranean Sea.
Interesting Facts About The Sahara Desert
 Very few call it home.
 Parts of the Sahara are rich and fertile, even today
 Over a thousand species of plants grow here
 It’s not even half sand
 Home to the toughest foot race ever
Very few call it home:
 The continental U.S. is home to 300 million individuals.
 The Sahara, covering the same land area, is home to just
two million.
 That’s a population density of just 1/150th of that of the
U.S.
Parts of the Sahara are rich and fertile:
 There’s about 80,000 sq mi of
oases across the Sahara.
 That is, over two percent of
the Sahara is covered by
oases.
 In Egypt, near the Nile,
endless miles of the Sahara
have been transformed by
irrigation.
Over a thousand species of plants grow here:
 Actually, the number is closer to 1,200.
 Many oases account for many hundreds of different plant
species.
It’s not even half sand:
 However, in many places, the
sand comprises only a thin
layer a top a gravel substrata.
 It is estimated that, overall, the
Sahara is just 30 percent sand
and 70 percent gravel.
Incredibly Adaptive Sahara Desert Animals
 Camels
 Addax Antelope
 Death Stalker Scorpion
 Ostrich
 Fennec Fox
 Jerboa
Camels:
 Camels store a large amount of fat
in the humps on top of their backs
 The fat can be burned for energy
when the camel is unable to locate
any food.
 While most of us are searching for
ways to burn off fat and slim up our
bodies, camels are actually evolved
by nature to carry extra fat around
to survive
Addax Antelope
 Addax antelope is well known
for its sleekness and its beauty
 They are among the most
endangered animals on the
planet, with long, elegant horns
and flat feet.
 Sadly they have been hunted to
the point where there are only
around 500 left.
Death Stalker Scorpion
 yellow in appearance
 look and fragile
 incredibly dangerous
 capable of causing
respiratory failure and death
Ostrich
They are able to run up to 40
miles an hour, almost as fast as
the gazelles. They can travel a
long ways, and can also pick
up noises and see movement
across vast distances, helping
them spot and avoid predators.
When threatened, the ostrich
can fight back, kicking with its
long legs.
Fennec Fox
 very large ears
 ears help them to hear better
in the desert
 also help them to release
body heat
 small and lightweight,
usually weighing only a
couple of pounds
Jerboa
 can run up to 16 miles per
hour
 It still needs to take in water
of course, like all living
things.
 But it is able to extract
enough from its foods to
sufficed for its needs.
Human Life In Sahara Desert:
Conclusion:
 Huge potential for solar energy production.
 The extremely low relative humidity.
 The lack of vegetation.
 Lack of rainfall
