Temperate forests and tropical rain forestsAlen Shaji
The word forest is derived from Latin ‘Foris’ meaning outside, the reference being to village boundary fence, and must have included all uncultivated and uninhabitated land.
Today a forest is any land managed for the diverse purposes of forestry whether covered with trees, shrubs, climbers, etc.
The forest biomes include a complex assemblage of different kinds of biotic communities.
Optimum conditions of temperature and ground moisture responsible for the growth of trees contribute greatly to the establishment of forest communities.
In addition, 50 mm rainfall is a pre-requisite for the trees.
The nature of soil, wind and air currents determines the distribution (abundance or sparseness) of forest vegetation.
The temperate forest biomes are characterized by a moderate climate and broad-leaved deciduous trees, which shed their
leaves in fall, are bare over winter and grow new foliage in the spring.
Grassland Ecosystem- As the name implies, grasslands are open spaces in which a variety of grasses grow, with only a few trees scattered near rivers and streams. The amount of annual rainfall influences the type of vegetation – not enough to support a forest but enough to prevent it from becoming a desert. Grasslands are found on every continent except Antarctica.
Grasslands are known in different regions of the world by different names – prairies, pampas, steppes, and savannah among others. They are divided into two types – Tropical and Temperate.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Acetabularia acetabulum is a single-celled green alga that in its vegetative state is morphologically differentiated into a basal rhizoid and an axially elongated stalk, which bears whorls of branching hairs. The single diploid nucleus resides in the rhizoid.
June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

This slides describes the basic concepts of ICT, basics of Email, Emerging Technology and Digital Initiatives in Education. This presentations aligns with the UGC Paper I syllabus.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

3. Temperate
grassland
Temperate grasslands are a
terrestrial habitat type defined by
the World Wide Fund for Nature. The
dominant vegetation in this biome
consists of grass and/or shrubs.
The climate is temperate and ranges
from semi-arid to semi-humid. The
habitat type differs from tropical
grasslands in the annual
temperature regime as well as the
types of species found here.
4. The Temperate grassland are called Prairies
in North America, Pampas in South
America, Steppes in Eurasia, Velds in
South Africa and Downs in Australia
6. Prairies
Prairies are ecosystems
considered part of the
temperate grasslands, savannas,
and shrublands biome by
ecologists, based on similar
temperate climates, moderate
rainfall, and a composition of
grasses, herbs, and shrubs,
rather than trees, as the
dominant vegetation type.
Temperate grassland regions
include.
7. LocationThe Prairie is located in Canada and
the USA, lying between the
foothills of the rocky mountains in
the west and the great lakes and
Appalachian highlands in the east.
The term includes the area
referred to as the Interior
Lowlands of Canada, the United
States, and Mexico, which includes
all of the Great Plains as well as
the wetter, hillier land to the
east.
8. Climate
The Prairies are located in the heart of a
continent. Therefore, the climate is of
continental type with extreme temperatures.
The summers are warm, with temperatures of
around 200 C and winters are very cold with
– 200C temperatures of around.
You can get this temperature in Winnipeg,
Canada. In winters, a thick blanket of snow
covers this region. It rains moderately in
this region and is ideal for the growth of
grass. Due to the of the north-south
barrier, a local wind ‘Chinook’ blows here.
9. Vegetation
The vegetation is composed primarily of
perennial grasses, with many species of
flowering plants of the pea and
composite families. Most authorities
recognize three basic subtypes of the
prairie: tallgrass prairie; midgrass, or
mixed-grass, prairie; and shortgrass
prairie, or shortgrass plains. Coastal
prairie, Pacific or California prairie,
Palouse prairie, and desert plains
grassland are primarily covered with
combinations of mixed-grass and
shortgrass species.
10. Wildlife
The Prairies Ecozone provides habitat for many Animal species. Intermittent
sloughs and ponds on the plains offer major breeding, adaptation, and
nesting grounds for migratory waterfowl using the Central North American
flyway. More than half of all North American ducks are born in Prairies
Ecozone wetlands. River valleys also offer sheltered habitats important
to wildlife, especially during the harsh winters. The Prairies offer a unique
habitat for the Black-tailed Prairie Dog, while its southern region is home
to the Short-horned Lizard and Western Rattlesnake. Manitoba provides
habitat for Black Bear, Moose, Sharp-tailed Grouse, Beaver, and Red Fox.
Also present are various species of frog and toad. Local fish include
Walleye, Lake Whitefish, and Northern Pike.
11. People
The people of this region are very
industrious. They are successfully using
technology to utilize its natural resources.
The two most developed countries – the USA
and Canada are located in this region.
Agriculture: Scientific methods of cultivation
and use of tractors, harvesters, and
combines have made North America a surplus
producer of food grains. The Prairies are
also called the ‘Granaries of the world’ due
to surplus wheat production.
13. Velds
Veld also spelled veldt, is a type of wide-open rural
landscape in Southern Africa. Particularly, it is a flat
area covered in grass or low scrub, especially in the
countries of South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, Zimbabwe,
and Botswana. A certain sub-tropical woodland ecoregion
of Southern Africa has been officially defined as the
Bushveld by the World Wide Fund for Nature. Trees are
found only in a few places—frost, fire and grazing
animals allow grass to grow but prevent the growth of
trees.
14. Location
The veld grasslands of
Africa occur in the most
southern portion of the
continent spreading through
the political boundaries of
South Africa, Lesotho
highlands, Swaziland,
Mozambique, Zimbabwe and
Botswana.
15. Climate
The climate of the veld is highly variable, but
its general pattern is mild winters from May to
September and hot or very hot summers
from November to March, with moderate or
considerable variations in daily temperatures
and abundant sunshine. The Velds have a mild
climate due to the influence of the Indian
Oceans. Winters are cold and dry.
temperature varies between 5°C and 10°C and is
the coldest month. The annual rainfall received
here mainly in the summer months from
November to February.
16. Vegetation
Velds are temperate
grassland, and
grasses both tall
and short, bushes
and scattered trees
form the vegetation
cover of the area.
Trees are
restricted to the
river banks and on
higher slopes.
17. • Major species of mammals, reptiles, and
birds have thinned out due to mass killing,
and the encroachments of farmers
• Reptiles, small mammals, and all birds
except for the ostrich still live in the
wild.
• Small numbers of antelopes called
blesboks still roam the veld grasslands.
• More than 50 species of fish, including
lungfish, are found in the Limpopo River.
Wildlife
18. People
Velds are known for cattle rearing and mining. These
activities are very famous in this region. Maize,
barley, potatoes, and oats are the main crops. You can
find a lot of mineral ores in this region. It has
a rich reserve of minerals. The area has many iron
and steel industries in places where coal and iron
are present. Johannesburg is known as the gold
capital of the world.
