Reinventing Human Resources at the School District of...
Summary The school district of Philadelphia had been troubled with a chronically low academic
achievement and a $200 million operating deficit. The relationship between the district and the
Philadelphia Federation of Teachers union also caused turmoil, while the turnover rate of teachers was
saddening. The offices of human resources also experienced a revolving door of leadership with three
different executive directors serving in about a 2 year time frame. HR had been reluctant of change to
meet the needs of the new economy. Tomás Hanna was hired on to improve HR s effectiveness in the
key challenges of strategic and operational issues, the relationship with the teachers union and the
highly centralized teacher hiring process. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Truth And Reconciliation Commission
Aboriginal persons in Canada have been facing oppression ever since colonization began. Even when
Canada gained independence from the British Empire, the oppression continued and still goes on
today. One major contributing factor to the oppression of Aboriginal people in Canada is the actions
taken by the Government. The Government of Canada has in fact mistreated and found to be partaking
in wrongdoing when dealing with the Aboriginal population in this country. With this ugly truth being
revealed, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission had to be tasked with discovering and revealing
past wrongdoing by a government in the hope of resolving conflict left over from the past. (cite) The
Truth and Reconciliation Commission was established on June 2, 2008, and was completed in June
2015 (cite). The Commission was established in order to implement Canada s Indian Residential
Schools Settlement Agreement, as well as to educate Canadians on Residential Schools and the
wrongdoing the Government of Canada had taken part in. The Indian Residential Schools Settlement
Agreement is Canada s largest settlement in its history, giving around two billion dollars to around
eighty six thousand survivors of the residential school system (cite). Residential schools were active
from 1880 to 1996; they were one of the many tactics used by the Canadian Government to enforce
cultural genocide on First Nations people (cite). Over a span of six years, The Truth and
Reconciliation Commission heard

Ramifications Of Racial Discrimination
This is a very touchy subject with police and the black community. If he s going around stopping all
races or genders in that neighborhood for stuff like that then I don t see anything wrong with it. The
video didn t show us his everyday habits, he could be doing the same to white people in the same
neighborhood or he could be just singling out black people. Regardless of race I feel that the stop was
unnecessary the only thing the man did was show slight signs of suspicion. This seemed procedural
but over the top. He didn t have to go as far as patting him down the man clearly didn t look nervous
or intimidated so he didn t need to pat him down. The ramifications of this is people start to feel
discriminated against and there becomes a tension

Allegory In The Handmaids Tale
The post Gileadean society depicted decades after Offred s story is the final allegory, presenting, in its
totality, the cyclicality of human nature. Just as the rise of Gilead showed the downfall of liberalism
and feminism, the fall of Gilead showed the exact opposite, a return to a world very similar to the one
before Gilead ever existed. In the novel, a symposium on the history of Gilead describes how Gilead is
a fascinating and worthwhile talk (299), using many similar descriptors as are used to speak of the
other classically conservative religious society, Puritanical Massachusetts. Atwood presents how, just
as the rise of Gilead signalled an end to the progression of economic and social liberalism, the fall of
Gilead showed the end ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the novel Moira is described as extremely free spirited and empowered to do as she wishes before
Gilead. During Gilead, her mindset stays the same, as using her extremely powerful confidence, as her
stiff backed posture was apparently enough to convince the Angels on guard... Moira marched straight
out the front door (132). Even under the crushing oppression of Gilead, people like Moira and Offred
keep up their resentment towards being told what to do, even if the format changes. It is described
how in Gilead, Offred decides against being a victim: I intend to last , she declares. To last, she must
pay attention. Especially early on in the novel, she is alert to every detail around her (Neuman 4). On
the more negative spectrum of unchanging human qualities, Atwood presents the eternal establishment
of social classes, even with the purported ideas that everyone be equal in oppression. In Gilead racial
and social divides abound, as it is reported how The Econowives do not like [Handmaids] (Atwood
44). This, and the fact that the symposium describes the racism that occurred in Gilead, shows how, no
matter what the society is, people will always carve out a space for them on the social ladder, only to
look down on those below them and envy those above them. The fact that humans, under either an

My Strengths And Weaknesses Of My Leadership Style
One of the most beneficial tools that an individual can engage in is self improvement. This course has
reemphasized active listening, reactive and reflective thinking, inspirational motivation, discipline
model, and the insist and cooperate negotiation. Each module has helped to demonstrate the areas of
strengths and weaknesses in my leadership style. I plan on improving my weaknesses and sharing my
strengths with others. I have noticed a trend in all of the modules that I do not stop and try to process
information. I try to innovate and insist on solutions for a quick fix. This can make me unapproachable
for my subordinates because I am ready to implement a solution as soon as I hear of a problem. My
peers can also feel as if I am being pushy when I hear of a problem and try to implement a solution.
My supervisors see that I am very proactive and try to find and fix any problem or perceived problem
that I am presented with. I spend majority of my time in the transformational leadership range. I plan
on improving my leadership style by using active listening, reactive and reflective thinking, and insist
and cooperate negotiation. Active listening is important because I want Airmen knowing I engage
them when they speak with me. I will continue to use active listening throughout my career. I realize I
don t stop working when Airmen speak with me. I had one of my subordinates, say I need you to pay
attention to me. This remark stung, because I never had someone

St. Augustine s Life
St. Augustine was born in Taagaste, Roman North Africa on November 13, 354 AD and was given the
name Aurelius by his parents Patricius and Monica Augustine. At the time of his birth, his father was
still a pagan, but his mother eventually converted him to Christianity (Chadwick 6). Aurelius was
raised receiving a Christian education and from a very young age, he had a great respect for the
religion. He learned to make the Sign of the Cross and certain ideas about the faith he kept very dear
to his heart including: a Divine Providence, Christ the Lord Savior, and the belief that hell existed for
those who did not live up to the Christian Faith s standards (Chadwick 11). Augustine did very well in
school and his father decided to send him to Carthage to pursue a study in forensic studies (Farrell 5).
The young man found a city living by pagan rules, where every desire of evil was encouraged.
Augustine had a very competitive spirit, and in such a city the only goal was who could be the very
worst. During this time he had a girlfriend whom he had a son with, and he lived with her for thirteen
years. His son only lived for seventeen years, and then died (Chadwick 20). This period of his life was
eventually looked on by himself with a great deal of regret and guilt which lead to some of his
writings including his famous books Confessions. At this point he decided to turn his life around and
saw rhetoric, reason, and philosophy as his new found passions. Augustine found solace

Comparison Between Developing And Developed Nations
Both developing and developed nations were part of the set. The developed nations consisted of 47%
of the total set. We started with 43 nations and dropped a few countries later from the analysis because
of missing data.
4. RESULTS AND ANALYSIS
Table 2 shows the correlation results among various variables. Average service is correlated with all
cultural dimensions, except for MF and the correlations are in predicted directions of hypotheses 1 3.
The OLS regression results are shown in Table 3. Here also we find that the coefficients of all cultural
dimensions (except for MF) area significant and in predicted directions. This provides support for
hypotheses 1 3, but not for hypothesis 4. The model explains 54% of the variance of SVA in our
sample.
To prove hypothesis 5 we selected average service values representing activities in four service
sectors: Avg. ICT, Avg. FinIns, Avg. Transport and Avg. Travel. The OLS results are mixed. Results in
Table 4 show that only model 2 (please refer to the methodology section earlier) with Avg. ICT as
dependent variable has three cultural dimensions significant with expected signs, and Insurance
service sector model (model 3 with Avg. FinIns as dependent variable) has one dimension UA
significant with expected sign. Transport service sector model with Avg. Transport as dependent
variable (model 4) has IC significant with a negative sign. Also Travel services sector model (model 5

Mclean Hospital And The Medical Field Of Mental Health
I worked as a greeter in volunteer department, directed patients to designated departments and
buildings, and managed shuttle calls for patients and their family members. During the time, I would
sometimes have the opportunity to chat with patients and family members about topics regarding
McLean Hospital and the medical field of mental health. I comprehended the proper administration of
eight medicines applied in the pre hospital setting authorized for EMT Basic by a medical director and
mastered seven pre hospital life saving skills, including the cardiopulmonary resuscitation and trauma
assessment. Throughout the course, I interacted with fellow students in several simulated scenarios,
including numerous hypothetical pre hospital situations. At age ten, a transfer student enrolled in my
elementary school. At first, her behavior was noticeably different, partially due to her frequent genuine
smiles. The classmates would question her numerous times regarding her personal matters due to the
curiosity. Regardless, the transfer student always smiled without a verbal reply. After several attempts,
classmates started to tease her after class in order to elicit a thoughtful response. A few times, naughty
peers lured her to carry out indecent behaviors, such as, throwing trash to classmates. Even after years,
I could recall a time that she cried after an ill behaved play. Next day, her mother came to the class to
discuss about the incident. At the moment, naughty peers worried

Democracy In American Democracy
American Democracy
Democracies have been around for hundreds of years, dating back before the word democracy was
created by the ancient Greeks. Democracies give the citizens of the nation power and let them have a
say in politics. Also, the people have many freedoms guaranteed to them, unlike other types of
government. The people elect local, state, and national government officials. The local government
deals with many different issues. State government shares most of its power with the national
government. Lastly, the national government oversees all the smaller forms of government in the land.
[Thesis] American Democracy fits the definition of democracy because the people are represented
fairly through local, state, and national government. To begin, local government acts on behalf on
specific areas known as counties, towns, or districts (local government). The people vote on
councilmen to represent our county, town, or city. For example, the councilmen vote on and determine
how much money our school can spend. They can also enact on our county taxes. Local government
cannot pass or enforce laws that might put judgment on a much bigger area other than its own(local
government). For example, if the city tax for Opp is nine cents, they cannot impose that same tax on a
nearby city like Kinston. The citizens have a choice in who they vote for to make sure we are
represented fairly. As a person who makes up a part of the county, district, or town, the people all

Only a short term exposure may cause death or unfavorable health effects. The slums of Bhopal and
its residents that surrounded the plant which were mostly affected by the gas suffered dearly. An

New people also arrive daily at the station seeking for jobs in the big city.
All over the place in Bhopal, religion is apparent. Hindus are seen praying to their gods for a safe trip.
They leave religious paintings, created with chalk, powder, and rose petals, on the floor of the station
(13). Eighty percent of Indians are loyal of Hinduism. Although the leading religion of India s people
is Hinduism, the majority of Bhopal s residents are Muslims.
Bhopal s Muslims worship mosques, and one of the biggest mosques in the world is the Taj ul
Masajid, which is located south of the city. They worship there five times a day to pray and also pray
at other numerous mosques around the city.
Muslims have always been in conflict with the Hindu majority (13). It all began when Muslims first
invaded India. And their disputes still continue today.
In India, there are three main classes of people: top, middle, and bottom class. The top class includes
people of such sort, such as managers and officials who work in government and industry, wealthy
businessmen, engineers, doctors, and other professions. They all live in a new section of the city, with

It can improve employee morale. Many people who are telecommuters are often happier employees.
The show that the employer trusts that they ll spend time in the home office wisely, and employees
appreciate being treated as responsible adults. Working at home also elimates the hassle of
commuting, increases time available for work, cuts commuting costs, and potentially lower stress.
Teleworkers also may save money on career clothing, since they probably won t have to dress up to
work at home. All these benefits can improve satisfaction and motivate employees to work harder.
It can increase employee productivity because teleworkers don t commute; they have more time to
work. Also, their working time is generally quality time since they usually encounter fewer
distractions and interruptions. And reducing workers stress levels often mean they ll stay highly
motivated. Reports if increases in productivity range from 10 percent to 30 percent.

Electrical Submersible Pump Analysis and Design
Case Services, Inc.
Abstract
Case Services software provides production optimization for a variety of different methods of artificial
lift. This paper discusses the dominant factors in electrical centrifugal submersible pump design and
monitoring. Emphasis is placed on three areas: Well inflow performance behavior. Fluid Pressure
Volume Temperature and phase behavior. Pump equipment performance specifications.
An examination of fluid dynamics within a centrifugal pump provides appreciation for the need to
analyze the pump one stage at a time. The importance of individual pump testing is also identified.
This paper ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In addition, it is crucial to analyze pump performance based on a known good condition. Experience
has shown that each serialized pump demonstrates unique performance data. Therefore, a factory
pump test should be obtained before the pump is installed in a well. The data from this test can be
used throughout the equipment life for accurate performance analysis. This discussion is limited to
conventional applications of centrifugal pumps specifically excluding: Pumps installed below the
producing formation. Downhole gas separation. Variable frequency drive considerations.
Focus is placed upon the pump itself. The downhole motor is discussed only in passing. Steady state
operation (no pump cycling) is also assumed.

The Basics
This section describes the formulas that are the basis for the csSubmersible suite s calculations. When
employing any pumping method, optimum artificial lift is achieved only when the pump is closely
matched to the well s ability to produce fluids. This is especially true with centrifugal pumping.
Before the pump design process can even begin, an accurate model of the well s inflow performance
must be developed.
How Much Will It Make?

Xiao Ke portrays a number of diseases as it illustrates a Triple Heater (San Jiao) imbalance, affecting
primarily the Lungs, Spleen, and the Kidneys. The Triple Heater mechanism distributes Qi into the

The Celsius Scale Of Temperature
Anders Celsius was born in 1701 in Uppsala, Sweden. He created the Celsius scale of temperature in
1742. When he created the Celsius scale, 0 degrees was the boiling point of water and 100 degrees the
freezing point. The Celsius system stayed this way until Jean Pierre Cristin, a french man, flipped the
Celsius system to how it is today. That is with 100 degrees being boiling point and 0 degrees being the
freezing point. Anders Celsius died in 1744. He was 42 years old. Celsius had made a great step in
scientific work with the Celsius scale. When the Celsius scale was first invented, fixed temperature
points were unheard of, meaning that no one understood that one temperature was the boiling or

depending, may seem like it would be the same science, but it is not. Small differences can be
observed. One point is that you can not heat an object above melting point without it melting. It is,
however, possible to cool some liquids to a temperature below their freezing point without them
turning solid. This process is called supercooling. Supercooling a liquid is possible because particles
in a solid become packed in a normal structure that is a characteristic of a certain substance. Some
solids form easily. Other solid substances do not form easily. Because it is hard to heat metals to a
temperature above melting point, and easy to cool them to a point below freezing, melting point
becomes a distinguishing factor of the metals.
The boiling point of a liquid is when a liquid is heated to such a temperature that the vapor pressure is
enough so that bubbles form inside the liquid. At the boiling point liquid begins to turn to gas. A liquid
will boil until all of the liquid has evaporated. The normal boiling point of water, as stated earlier, is
100°C. But, as altitude increases, the boiling point is lowered.
Adding salt to a frozen matter is to upset the balance between freezing and melting. The salt causes
fewer molecules to

Parent Child Relationships
The Impact of Child Abuse on Parent/Child Relationships: Child abuse can cause many problems with

Some kids would scratch or cut themselves after being abused for long periods of time(Orr1). It is best
to take that child to see a counselor before the problem escalates into a bigger problem. In extreme

that they are being abused would most likely look toward committing suicide. Some kids who were
victims of child abuse would even run away(Ganderilla1). Child abuse not only effects the child being

Passions In Medea
In the ancient world, passions had a wider connotation than they do in the modern age. Passion in the
ancient world tended to have a negative connotation. Often, ancient passions led to sins or
unhappiness. In Greek mythology, divine beings could not control their passions as Euripides wrote
about in Medea. However, Buddhists see passions as undesirable, and they take steps to suppress their
passions to achieve enlightenment. Christianity instructs followers to control their passions, however
they do not restrict them to the extent that Buddhists do. Passions in the ancient religions were urges
which led people to commit sins, but some religions teach people methods to control their passions. In

her children. At one point, she hesitated and decided I shall take my children with me, but her passion
was too strong for her to overcome. She went forward with her plan, and she refuses to allow him to
bury their children. As Medea had hoped, the loss of his children devastated Jason. The plan worked
the way Medea had intended, so she was understandably pleased. Medea s love for Jason turned to
heartbreak which led her to commit each of her murderous acts. She clearly understood the magnitude
of her actions as she revealed when she stated, I understand what evil I am about to do but my wrath is
stronger even than my thoughts. Her ability to recognize her wrongs, yet still not stop herself shows
that people could not expect the divine beings of Ancient Greek mythology to control their passions.
Unlike Medea, Augustine s confessions provides directions for controlling passions as well as
explanations of ancient passions. During puberty, Augustine was unable to distinguish pure affection

Anglo Saxon Research Paper
The Anglo Saxon period is known as a time span of about 600 years from 400 1066 AD. Many refer to
it as the Dark Ages because very little written sources of the period are available. The Anglo Saxon
period is a time of many wars. Invaders came to settle and take over the land causing war between
kingdoms. Also it s a time that religion was forced upon. Meaning to convert whether you wanted to
or not. A lot of separation of kingdoms occurred during these times creating more rulers of these new
kingdoms. For example, Charlemagne, also known as Charles the Great, became King of Franks in

The Culture Of Country Music In The 1920 s
Country Music
There was nothing but the darkness of the night. There were no noise to be heard. Suddenly a loud
strumming of music came from one direction. Gathering around, people were amazed by what
beautiful music they were hearing. This was the start of something new and original; it was called
country music. Country music started in the early 1920s. This genre of music originated from the
southern states of the United States ( Lewis). This meant a beginning of something new and exciting,
like how the banjo s and harmonicas would soon gain influence. As a result this new genre of music
became very popular and Nashville became the center of country music recordings. This meant that by

In the beginning of the 1920s, country music started to take it s hold. The roots of the country genre
came from the older American folk music and the Western music. This type of music usually came
from the more unfortunate people of the Eastern states. Country music in the 1920s usually consisted
of ballads and dance tunes with generally simple forms and harmonies. Multifold of the instruments
that were used to make this tune and harmonies were banjos, acoustic guitar, fiddles, and harmonicas.
In the 1920s, there weren t many people who knew about the country genre, and the idea of country

The Organizational Structure And Leadership Styles
When working for an organization, there are many variables that will determine how successful the
company is. There are also many variables that can play in the downfall of an organization. The
organizational structure and leadership styles are vital to the success of any company. The background
of a leaders values and culture, as well as the culture within an organization, will determine the
success of the company itself. It will also determine the type of interaction and quality of work
produced by the employees. Management plays a vital role in determining if the organization will be
successful and prosper. Managers are not only decision makers, but also exercise considerable
influence through formal and informal communication, role modeling, and other powerful means
(Nahavandi, Denhardt, Denhardt Arittiguteta, 2015). There are different leadership styles to consider
when placing a person in a position of leadership. Toxic leadership is a management issue that affects
the organizational culture and employees job satisfaction. This type of toxic leadership exists
everywhere, in both the military and civilian sectors of the world. The cultural mindset of these types
of leaders has a lot to do with not being able to attain their self awareness. This essay will explain the
characteristics of a toxic leader, how toxic leadership is detrimental to the organization, and ways to
overcome a toxic leader.

A Freelance Writer At Three Online Companies
Currently I am a contracted freelance writer at three online companies. I just began being paid for
writing this year. I joined one company in January, one in February, the third in March. They are all
considered content farms . The first two companies work relatively the same, the third is a bit different
in that it it pays in lifetime royalties. I have only wrote five articles for the third company. They have
the most astringent requirements and their articles are all 500 words, in third person, and require
writers to provide sources in the footnotes. The first two companies have you write articles for your
application in order to rate your quality. The first company I contracted with recently upgraded my
writing and I was not aware of it for a while. This action allows me a larger pool of jobs to choose
from.
The first two companies both have pools of categorized jobs a writer may choose from. You may
choose any job at your rating or lower. Unfortunately there s been great upheaval in my personal life
this year and it has greatly affected my on time stats. Thereby making my writer s rating lower than
what I am capable of. I have wrote all my life. Poems, lists, ideas, everything really. I was a very

The Role of Women in Homer’s Iliad Essay
The Role of Women in Homer s Iliad
Homer s Iliad is undoubtedly focused on its male characters: Achilles, primarily, but also Hector and
Agamemnon. Nevertheless, it seems that the most crucial characters in the epic are female. Homer
uses the characters of Thetis, Andromache, and Helen as a basis for comparison to the male characters.
Homer wants his audience to see and understand the folly of his male characters in choosing war over
peace, aggression over kindness, and honor over family. While the behavior of these characters clearly
speaks for itself, the contrasting attitudes and behaviors of the female characters proffer an alternative;
in comparison, the reader can hardly fail to concur with Homer s message that war, aggression, ...

Thetis is always motivated by her love and pity for her son, two emotions he seems unable to feel
himself. As a loving mother, she is concerned for her son and his future and so ensures that he is aware
of his options. Out of respect for him, she allows Achilles to make his own decision and goes as far as
to support him fully, although the attentive reader can sense that doing so is immensely painful for her.
Therefore, although it superficially seems that Thetis supports war and aggression, her true motives
are far more admirable.
Unlike Thetis, Andromache s values are clear. On the rampart in book six, she makes an impassioned
plea to Hector for reason and peace. Pity me, please! she says, Take your stand on the rampart here,
before you orphan your son and make your wife a widow. (ll. 230 231) When her fears are realized
and Hector is struck down by Achilles, she laments, Hector, what help are you to [Astyanax], now you
are dead? (l. 571) This single statement lays bare the true folly of pride: How can one justify the
preservation of honor at the cost of the destruction of all that one fought for in the first place?
Finally, there is great irony in the lamentations of both Helen and Briseis for Hector and Patroclus
respectively. Helen proclaims her respect for Hector s kindness: Hector, you d win them to my side . . .
you with your gentle temper, all your gentle

Speeches In The Revolutionary War
Revolutionary Speeches The revolutionary war was a time well known in our history. We grew up
learning that all the colonists were tired of the way Britain treated us, what they don t show at a young
age is that not everyone wanted to fight. Not everyone believed that fighting the British was a good
idea; some thought it was smart to stay loyal to the British for they had the biggest militia at this time.
The only way to face something like that is through encouragement, inspiration, and the wise words
from men who want to stand for what they believe in. Many men had the same ideas, this shows that
the repetitive ideas were for emphasis and persuasions. Men like Thomas Paine, George Washington,
Benjamin Franklin, and Patrick Henry all gave speeches to encourage the people of America to stand
up and fight for what s right. Not only did they sacrifice their careers, some also fought in the war. If
someone was to lay their life on the line for something that had little to no survival rate, little to no
people would do it. Very few men had the courage. Washington is a well known historical figure for
leading the way through the revolutionary war. As Washington states before the Battle of Long Island,

Graduation Speech And Technical Education
Filling in the Missing Gaps
Why are schools not preparing students for college, for the real world, or how be successful in the
work force? Many Americans ask this question and do not understand that Career and Technical
Education (CTE), once called Vocational Education, do exactly that (Estacion, Deluca, Plank 346).
They believe that all that schools teach are how to write, solve math problems, use the scientific
method, and absorb the information discussed in history courses. Career and Technical Education uses
experimental learning that gives students skills and motivation to graduate high school and be
successful afterwards. Experimental learning is a concept that uses practical thinking and activities to
grasp contexts and make learning information and skills easier (Fletcher and Hernadez Gantes par. 3).
Career and Technical Education give students opportunities to better themselves, and stay in school to
create success in all aspects of their lives. The skills and unique courses taught in Career and
Technical Education allow students opportunities and dreams that they do not receive in regular core
classes. An occurrence is recorded in the journal of Phi Delta Kappan of a student that took a culinary
course in high school that inspired her to enter the culinary field of work. Due to the lack of credit in
the Career and Technical Education and of two year degree programs, her parent suggested that she

a way of finding out an object s age by using properties of radiocarbon, a radioactive isotope of
carbon. A second way of finding out an artifact s date can be Potassium argon dating which can be
used to date extremely old artifacts up to 100,000 years old. The last method he explained was
Obsidian hydration dating which is used on artifacts made from volcanic glass. One thing that got my

Understanding The Director Of National Intelligence
Understanding the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) priorities are necessary to recommend any
initiatives that will have the most value to the intelligence community (IC). The DNI fully identifies to
the IC what his mission, vision, and goals are. The DNI uses the National Intelligence Strategy (NIS)
to explain the objectives and the priorities for the IC. There are a few areas, which if made a priority
would have a beneficial impact on the IC. These recommendations would not require a lot of
resources. They include adapting one overall IC vision, enhancing current agency to agency

which would add a large benefit to the IC would be to have one vision with a joint strategy on how to
achieve the vision. The intelligence enterprise needs to not only indicate they have an overall vision
but they also need to adapt the vision into their organizations. With 17 different IC components that
each offers a unique service, there needs to be integration as has been the theme but also the visions
and actual employment of the visions and goals need to be aligned as well. The DNI lists his mission,

The Importance Of The Elgin Marbles
Around the year of 440 BC, a cultural monument was constructed in Athens Greece in dedication to
the city s patron Greek goddess Athena. This monument is known as the Parthenon which not only
served as a temple for the athenian people, but also is home to a collection of marble sculptures which
we know now as the famous Elgin Marbles. These marbles now sit in the British Museum of London
thousands of years after their construction, thousands of miles away from the original location in
Athens Greece. The Elgin Marbles are a collection of sculptures that were taken from their place of
origin, Athens, Greece by Lord Elgin to London in1803. The controversy that has surfaced over the
past one hundred plus years deals with the the reasoning behind the removal of the marbles. The two
sides of the argument as indicated by Juan Pablo Sanchez in an issue of National Geographic s are
whether the marbles were salvaged or stolen. In order to understand why this argument stands, one
must gain knowledge of what the marbles are, look into both sides of the argument, and finally search
for the reasoning behind both sides.
The three different types of sculptures known as the Elgin Marbles are the pediments, metopes, and
the frieze. The pediments of the Parthenon are triangular niches on the upper parts of the temple, one
which is located on the East, the other on the West. The greek goddess Athena s tale of her birth is

Paper on Frederick Douglass
In the 1800 s, slavery was a predominant issue in the United States, one that most Americans in the
South dealt with daily. The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass reveals much about American
history during the time of slavery as well as expounds arguments for the abolition of slavery. As a
historical document, it conveys information about the slave family, work, the master slave
relationship, and the treatment and living conditions of slaves. As an antislavery tract, it argues against
commonly held beliefs about slavery s benefits and its morality, making strong points for getting rid of
slavery. In The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, Douglass reveals, through the story he

slaves could have had if they were allowed to have strong, lasting family bonds. Frederick Douglass
narrative reveals a lot about the work of the slaves. Some few slaves worked in the master s house,
some more worked in the master s production huts around the farm, but most of them worked in the

sometimes very severely, if they weren t working early in the morning. They could also be punished if

And a growing company like amazon did not wanted to lose its opportunity to capture this big market.
Reason for late entry
The foremost reason for amazons late entry Indian market was limited market , and for the company
that earns $75 million it would not be a fair decision establishing into India at an early stage, because
at time earnings from India accounted for only $1 $2 million.
Another reason for late entrance was a low rate of internet penetration. Despite of a huge population,
there were only about 50 million active internet users, which meant that the target segment was very
less for the potential customers in the country. Apparently the concept of online retailing was not
established in the country which obliged amazon to create awareness about online shopping among

English Ivy Research Paper
The plant known as English ivy is a climbing vine, having smooth, shiny, evergreen leaves, small,
yellowish flowers, and black berries grown as an ornamental. The plant is mostly known for growing
on buildings like it once did on some of the most prestigious schools in America, but the plant has
other uses. It has medicinal uses, its an air purifier, but it still has some side effects. English ivy
originates from Europe, western Asia, and northern Africa. It was introduced in the Americas and like
any new organism introduce to a new ecosystem it will either die or rapidly dominate. That s what this
invasive plant did in America. One of the reasons for that is that it thrives in cold low light situations
and it kills off local vegetation. The Ivy plants thrived on the buildings on Yale s campus until the
1980s that is when an effort was made to get rid of them because to damage the buildings. This what

also being tested to cure inflammation and arthritis which can lead to cancer. It is also known as a very
efficient air purifier. Its removes mold and other toxins like benzene, formaldehyde, xylene, and
toluene. Many of these cause sick building syndrome which is when people get sick or feel ill when in
a particular building usually because some kind of mold has been forming in the walls. Ivy as
beneficial as it is or may become it does contain some minor side effects. When used as an herb some
side effects are shortness of breath, swelling, reddening of skin, and

Alien Abductions Essay
The Psychology Behind Alien Abductions
Alien abductions are no longer things of science fiction novel and movies. In the late 1940s, UFO and
alien sightings became a nation wide phenomenon. With the reported sightings and abductions, came
mass media, but also heavy criticism. If nothing else, these descriptions illustrate that the AAE is a
dynamic, elaborate, and involved experience, rich in contextual detail, with considerable perceptual,
psychological, cognitive, and physical concomitants (p. 255). Over the course of seventy years,
scientists have delved into the mindset of these victims and uncovered the underlying causes of the
reported experiences. Extensive research has been conducted to determine the psychological aspects

Donald Spence believes that this may be the case in his article Abduction Tales as Metaphors . The
alien narrative is a substitute for the cultural crisis Robert Thoreau describes as a less empowered,
more alienated, and less predictable citizens (Spence 177). Most abductions have the similar traits of
powerlessness and uncertainty, while powerful beings degrade their bodies and leave them
traumatized (177). When contrasting modern day abductions and mid twentieth century ones, Spence
found that the narratives are also reflective of our times. Early aliens were generally characterized as a
jovial creatures, while modern day extraterrestrials are described as malevolent creatures. The stark
contrast is a subliminal metaphor for the cultural atmosphere of the time. The early Kennedy and
Eisenhower years marker great progress within the American society and stability. As the political and
cultural climates have changed, the tales of little gray men turn into an ominous fight for freedom.
Deciphering the actual cause of reports alien abductions may never be solved, but many psychologists
have theories. While Spence believes the alien abduction phenomenon is a metaphor for our society,
psychologist Roy Baumeister believes reports are made by masochists. A person who is sexually
gratified by pain, degradation, etc., that is self imposed or imposed by others. Dr. Baumeister believes

What Did The Maoist Insurgency Influence The Declaration...
Extended Essay Draft
To what extent did the Maoist Insurgency influence the declaration of Martial law in the Philippines
on 1972?
What events influenced the decision to declare Martial Law in the Philippines in 1972?
Introduction:
As a Filipina living as an expatriate, I have travelled and lived around the world and meeting new
people and other Filipinos with different backgrounds. I was interested to what specific event affected
their belief. The Martial law in 1972 is a major event in the history of the Philippines that caused
disorder and violence against the Marcos government and this event modernized the country in terms
of government and the Filipinos. There are many books written on the effects of the Martial law to the

This law is the exercise imposed by the government and control by military authorities over the
civilian population. Martial law is the declared either when there is near violent civil unrest or major
natural disasters, however most countries use a different legal construct like state of emergency . The
imposition of martial law accompanies curfews, the suspension of civil laws, civil rights, habeas
corpus, and the application of military justice to civilians. Civilians defying martial law may be
subjected to military tribunals.
Martial law in the Philippines was publicly declared nationwide on September 23, 1972. Around
7:15pm, he broadcasted in television his proclamation of Martial law and placing the control under the
Armed Forces of the Philippines. In this situation, the president declared martial law because there
was near violent civil unrest in the Philippine society. It was lifted on January 17, 1981.
President Ferdinand Marcos was holding the presidency of the Philippines for 20 years from 1966
1986. He ruled the country as a dictator and is known for running a corrupt and undemocratic regime.
The declaration of martial in 1972 by President Marcos was his claim that it was the last defence
against the rising disorder caused by increasing student demonstrations, the alleged threats of
communist insurgency by the Communist Party of the Philippines and the Muslim Separatists
Movement of the Moro National Liberation Front.

Advantages Of African American Freedom
Freedom is the power to determine action without restraint, and it is the foundation of our lives today.
Every race has the freedom to vote, go to whichever school they choose, take place in office, sit in any
sector of the bus, etc. Around the 1860 s, Northern African Americans had freedom, but unlike today,
their freedom was restricted. In 1850, before the beginning of the civil war, the population census
concluded that fourteen percent of the population was African American. By 1860, 476,000 of them
were free from slavery, but only 221,000 lived in the North. After winning the Revolutionary war the
Northern states gradually began to end slavery and it was officially abolished in 1842. With all factors
in mind, the question of just how free blacks were in the North still lingers in the air. Blacks in the
North were only somewhat free in the years just before the civil war because they endured restrictions
in social, political, and educational areas of society.
To begin with, northern blacks were only somewhat free because they still had to encounter
segregation, discrimination, and prejudice in their social freedom. Although they were free to live,
they had to use restrooms, public areas, schools, etc. that were specifically assigned to their race. An
English Visitor, Charles Mackay, defined his travels by stating, he shall not be free to dine and drink at
our board...to attend us at the bed of sickness and pain to mingle with us in the concert room, the
lecture room, the theatre, or the church, (document B). African Americans were not given the
opportunity to associate with anyone of the white race, nor were they allowed to be in the same
location as them. Since the white race was considered the superior race , and were heavily
discriminant towards the black race, their segregated public facilities were a lot nicer than those of
african americans. Also, prejudice made it harder for black people to attain jobs. In a graduation
speech made by an african american, he proclaimed white boys won t work with me. Shall I be a
merchant? No one will have me in his office (document C). Because of their race, african americans
struggled to get employed. In society, northern blacks had to suffer through

Full Body Scanners Do Not Lead to Safer Travel Essay
Why should anyone including my 3 year old daughter unnecessarily be exposed to cancer causing X
ray beams in a full body scanner? Or have a total stranger run his or her hands up and down my
daughter s body for a full pat down upon refusing the scan? Most enraging is that the scan can be done
without my knowledge. Full body scanners should not be used in United States airports. The
Transportation Security Administration (TSA), on November 20, 2010 implemented the use of 385
scanners, otherwise know as advanced imaging technology in 68 airports to include Denver
International Airport. The TSA is using these machines supposedly to ensure safer travel and be steps
ahead of security threats. According to the TSA, as a preventive measure, ... Show more content on

The two types of scanners currently being used by the TSA are backscatter imaging technology and
millimeter wave imaging. The backscatter imaging is an X ray beam bounced off the skin. Millimeter
wave imaging bounces of electromagnetic waves off the skin as well. Being that both technologies do
not penetrate the body, explosives hidden in body cavities or surgically implanted, go completely
undetected (Heasley 1). Since the technologies being used only bounce waves of the body surface, this
leaves then skin highly exposed to concentrated amounts of radiation. Health side effect studies of full
body scanners have been labeled classified and inaccessible to the general public. Four professors
from the University of California San Francisco, whom are well respected cancer, X ray
crystallographers and imaging experts stated in a letter to the Obama administration that, The low
energy rays do a Compton scatter off tissue layers just under the skin, possibly exposing some vital
areas and leaving the tissues at risk of mutation. When an X ray Compton scatters, it doesn t shift an
electron to a higher energy level; instead, it hits the electron hard enough to dislodge it from its atom.
The authors note that this process is likely breaking bonds, which could cause mutations in cells and
raise the risk of cancer (Johnston). Furthermore, the UCSF researchers write in their letter, older
passengers are more susceptible to mutagenic effects of X rays, and the risk of

  • 3. The Truth And Reconciliation Commission Aboriginal persons in Canada have been facing oppression ever since colonization began. Even when Canada gained independence from the British Empire, the oppression continued and still goes on today. One major contributing factor to the oppression of Aboriginal people in Canada is the actions taken by the Government. The Government of Canada has in fact mistreated and found to be partaking in wrongdoing when dealing with the Aboriginal population in this country. With this ugly truth being revealed, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission had to be tasked with discovering and revealing past wrongdoing by a government in the hope of resolving conflict left over from the past. (cite) The Truth and Reconciliation Commission was established on June 2, 2008, and was completed in June 2015 (cite). The Commission was established in order to implement Canada s Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement, as well as to educate Canadians on Residential Schools and the wrongdoing the Government of Canada had taken part in. The Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement is Canada s largest settlement in its history, giving around two billion dollars to around eighty six thousand survivors of the residential school system (cite). Residential schools were active from 1880 to 1996; they were one of the many tactics used by the Canadian Government to enforce cultural genocide on First Nations people (cite). Regardless of race I feel that the stop was unnecessary the only thing the man did was show slight signs of suspicion. This seemed procedural but over the top. • 5. Allegory In The Handmaids Tale The post Gileadean society depicted decades after Offred s story is the final allegory, presenting, in its totality, the cyclicality of human nature. Just as the rise of Gilead showed the downfall of liberalism and feminism, the fall of Gilead showed the exact opposite, a return to a world very similar to the one before Gilead ever existed. In the novel, a symposium on the history of Gilead describes how Gilead is a fascinating and worthwhile talk (299), using many similar descriptors as are used to speak of the other classically conservative religious society, Puritanical Massachusetts. Atwood presents how, just as the rise of Gilead signalled an end to the progression of economic and social liberalism, the fall of Gilead showed the end ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the novel Moira is described as extremely free spirited and empowered to do as she wishes before Gilead. During Gilead, her mindset stays the same, as using her extremely powerful confidence, as her stiff backed posture was apparently enough to convince the Angels on guard... Moira marched straight out the front door (132). Even under the crushing oppression of Gilead, people like Moira and Offred keep up their resentment towards being told what to do, even if the format changes. It is described how in Gilead, Offred decides against being a victim: I intend to last , she declares. To last, she must pay attention. Especially early on in the novel, she is alert to every detail around her (Neuman 4). On the more negative spectrum of unchanging human qualities, Atwood presents the eternal establishment of social classes, even with the purported ideas that everyone be equal in oppression. In Gilead racial and social divides abound, as it is reported how The Econowives do not like [Handmaids] (Atwood 44). This, and the fact that the symposium describes the racism that occurred in Gilead, shows how, no matter what the society is, people will always carve out a space for them on the social ladder, only to look down on those below them and envy those above them. The fact that humans, under either an extremely ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

At the time of his birth, his father was still a pagan, but his mother eventually converted him to Christianity (Chadwick 6). Aurelius was raised receiving a Christian education and from a very young age, he had a great respect for the religion. He learned to make the Sign of the Cross and certain ideas about the faith he kept very dear to his heart including: a Divine Providence, Christ the Lord Savior, and the belief that hell existed for those who did not live up to the Christian Faith s standards (Chadwick 11). Augustine did very well in school and his father decided to send him to Carthage to pursue a study in forensic studies (Farrell 5). The young man found a city living by pagan rules, where every desire of evil was encouraged. Augustine had a very competitive spirit, and in such a city the only goal was who could be the very worst. During this time he had a girlfriend whom he had a son with, and he lived with her for thirteen years. His son only lived for seventeen years, and then died (Chadwick 20). This period of his life was eventually looked on by himself with a great deal of regret and guilt which lead to some of his writings including his famous books Confessions. At this point he decided to turn his life around and saw rhetoric, reason, and philosophy as his new found passions. Augustine found solace ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

We started with 43 nations and dropped a few countries later from the analysis because of missing data. 4. RESULTS AND ANALYSIS Table 2 shows the correlation results among various variables. Average service is correlated with all cultural dimensions, except for MF and the correlations are in predicted directions of hypotheses 1 3. The OLS regression results are shown in Table 3. Here also we find that the coefficients of all cultural dimensions (except for MF) area significant and in predicted directions. This provides support for hypotheses 1 3, but not for hypothesis 4. The model explains 54% of the variance of SVA in our sample. To prove hypothesis 5 we selected average service values representing activities in four service sectors: Avg. ICT, Avg. FinIns, Avg. • 12. Democracy In American Democracy American Democracy Democracies have been around for hundreds of years, dating back before the word democracy was created by the ancient Greeks. Democracies give the citizens of the nation power and let them have a say in politics. Also, the people have many freedoms guaranteed to them, unlike other types of government. The people elect local, state, and national government officials. The local government deals with many different issues. State government shares most of its power with the national government. Lastly, the national government oversees all the smaller forms of government in the land. [Thesis] American Democracy fits the definition of democracy because the people are represented fairly through local, state, and national government. To begin, local government acts on behalf on specific areas known as counties, towns, or districts (local government). The people vote on councilmen to represent our county, town, or city. For example, the councilmen vote on and determine how much money our school can spend. They can also enact on our county taxes. Local government cannot pass or enforce laws that might put judgment on a much bigger area other than its own(local government). For example, if the city tax for Opp is nine cents, they cannot impose that same tax on a nearby city like Kinston. The citizens have a choice in who they vote for to make sure we are represented fairly. As a person who makes up a part of the county, district, or town, the people all ... The Celsius system stayed this way until Jean Pierre Cristin, a french man, flipped the Celsius system to how it is today. The freezing and melting point of a liquid or solid, depending, may seem like it would be the same science, but it is not. Small differences can be observed. One point is that you can not heat an object above melting point without it melting. It is, however, possible to cool some liquids to a temperature below their freezing point without them turning solid. This process is called supercooling. Supercooling a liquid is possible because particles in a solid become packed in a normal structure that is a characteristic of a certain substance. Some solids form easily. Other solid substances do not form easily. Because it is hard to heat metals to a temperature above melting point, and easy to cool them to a point below freezing, melting point becomes a distinguishing factor of the metals. The boiling point of a liquid is when a liquid is heated to such a temperature that the vapor pressure is enough so that bubbles form inside the liquid. At the boiling point liquid begins to turn to gas. A liquid will boil until all of the liquid has evaporated. The normal boiling point of water, as stated earlier, is 100°C. But, as altitude increases, the boiling point is lowered. Adding salt to a frozen matter is to upset the balance between freezing and melting. The salt causes fewer molecules to ... Nevertheless, it seems that the most crucial characters in the epic are female. Homer uses the characters of Thetis, Andromache, and Helen as a basis for comparison to the male characters. Homer wants his audience to see and understand the folly of his male characters in choosing war over peace, aggression over kindness, and honor over family. • 43. Essay on Frederick Douglas Paper on Frederick Douglass In the 1800 s, slavery was a predominant issue in the United States, one that most Americans in the South dealt with daily. The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass reveals much about American history during the time of slavery as well as expounds arguments for the abolition of slavery. As a historical document, it conveys information about the slave family, work, the master slave relationship, and the treatment and living conditions of slaves. As an antislavery tract, it argues against commonly held beliefs about slavery s benefits and its morality, making strong points for getting rid of slavery. As these examples show, any member of a family could at any time be separated from any other member. Controlling the family in this way, slaveholders took away the potential strength that the slaves could have had if they were allowed to have strong, lasting family bonds. Frederick Douglass narrative reveals a lot about the work of the slaves. Some few slaves worked in the master s house, some more worked in the master s production huts around the farm, but most of them worked in the field under the watch of an overseer with a whip ready in hand. The slaves would be punished, sometimes very severely, if they weren t working early in the morning. They could also be punished if they didn t work fast enough or well enough. After a long day of work, they would have to go to their huts and do their own cooking and washing. They could only sleep a few hours a night after doing all the work they had to do. When they were finished with their work they would fall down on their beds and sleep till they [were] summoned to the field by the driver s horn. • 46. Alien Abductions Essay The Psychology Behind Alien Abductions Alien abductions are no longer things of science fiction novel and movies. In the late 1940s, UFO and alien sightings became a nation wide phenomenon. With the reported sightings and abductions, came mass media, but also heavy criticism. If nothing else, these descriptions illustrate that the AAE is a dynamic, elaborate, and involved experience, rich in contextual detail, with considerable perceptual, psychological, cognitive, and physical concomitants (p. 255). Over the course of seventy years, scientists have delved into the mindset of these victims and uncovered the underlying causes of the reported experiences. Extensive research has been conducted to determine the psychological aspects of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Donald Spence believes that this may be the case in his article Abduction Tales as Metaphors . The alien narrative is a substitute for the cultural crisis Robert Thoreau describes as a less empowered, more alienated, and less predictable citizens (Spence 177). Most abductions have the similar traits of powerlessness and uncertainty, while powerful beings degrade their bodies and leave them traumatized (177). When contrasting modern day abductions and mid twentieth century ones, Spence found that the narratives are also reflective of our times. Early aliens were generally characterized as a jovial creatures, while modern day extraterrestrials are described as malevolent creatures. The stark contrast is a subliminal metaphor for the cultural atmosphere of the time. The early Kennedy and Eisenhower years marker great progress within the American society and stability. As the political and cultural climates have changed, the tales of little gray men turn into an ominous fight for freedom. Deciphering the actual cause of reports alien abductions may never be solved, but many psychologists have theories. While Spence believes the alien abduction phenomenon is a metaphor for our society, psychologist Roy Baumeister believes reports are made by masochists. A person who is sexually gratified by pain, degradation, etc., that is self imposed or imposed by others. Dr. Baumeister believes the reports stem ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

What events influenced the decision to declare Martial Law in the Philippines in 1972? Introduction: As a Filipina living as an expatriate, I have travelled and lived around the world and meeting new people and other Filipinos with different backgrounds. I was interested to what specific event affected their belief. • 48. Advantages Of African American Freedom Freedom is the power to determine action without restraint, and it is the foundation of our lives today. Every race has the freedom to vote, go to whichever school they choose, take place in office, sit in any sector of the bus, etc. Around the 1860 s, Northern African Americans had freedom, but unlike today, their freedom was restricted. In 1850, before the beginning of the civil war, the population census concluded that fourteen percent of the population was African American. By 1860, 476,000 of them were free from slavery, but only 221,000 lived in the North. After winning the Revolutionary war the Northern states gradually began to end slavery and it was officially abolished in 1842. With all factors in mind, the question of just how free blacks were in the North still lingers in the air. Blacks in the North were only somewhat free in the years just before the civil war because they endured restrictions in social, political, and educational areas of society. To begin with, northern blacks were only somewhat free because they still had to encounter segregation, discrimination, and prejudice in their social freedom. Although they were free to live, they had to use restrooms, public areas, schools, etc. that were specifically assigned to their race. An English Visitor, Charles Mackay, defined his travels by stating, he shall not be free to dine and drink at our board...to attend us at the bed of sickness and pain to mingle with us in the concert room, the lecture room, the theatre, or the church, (document B). African Americans were not given the opportunity to associate with anyone of the white race, nor were they allowed to be in the same location as them. Since the white race was considered the superior race , and were heavily discriminant towards the black race, their segregated public facilities were a lot nicer than those of african americans. Also, prejudice made it harder for black people to attain jobs. In a graduation speech made by an african american, he proclaimed white boys won t work with me. Shall I be a merchant? No one will have me in his office (document C). Because of their race, african americans struggled to get employed. In society, northern blacks had to suffer through ... • 49. Full Body Scanners Do Not Lead to Safer Travel Essay Why should anyone including my 3 year old daughter unnecessarily be exposed to cancer causing X ray beams in a full body scanner? Or have a total stranger run his or her hands up and down my daughter s body for a full pat down upon refusing the scan? Most enraging is that the scan can be done without my knowledge. Full body scanners should not be used in United States airports. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA), on November 20, 2010 implemented the use of 385 scanners, otherwise know as advanced imaging technology in 68 airports to include Denver International Airport. The TSA is using these machines supposedly to ensure safer travel and be steps ahead of security threats. According to the TSA, as a preventive measure, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The two types of scanners currently being used by the TSA are backscatter imaging technology and millimeter wave imaging. The backscatter imaging is an X ray beam bounced off the skin. Millimeter wave imaging bounces of electromagnetic waves off the skin as well. Being that both technologies do not penetrate the body, explosives hidden in body cavities or surgically implanted, go completely undetected (Heasley 1). Since the technologies being used only bounce waves of the body surface, this leaves then skin highly exposed to concentrated amounts of radiation. Health side effect studies of full body scanners have been labeled classified and inaccessible to the general public. Four professors from the University of California San Francisco, whom are well respected cancer, X ray crystallographers and imaging experts stated in a letter to the Obama administration that, The low energy rays do a Compton scatter off tissue layers just under the skin, possibly exposing some vital areas and leaving the tissues at risk of mutation. When an X ray Compton scatters, it doesn t shift an electron to a higher energy level; instead, it hits the electron hard enough to dislodge it from its atom. The authors note that this process is likely breaking bonds, which could cause mutations in cells and raise the risk of cancer (Johnston). Furthermore, the UCSF researchers write in their letter, older passengers are more susceptible to mutagenic effects of X rays, and the risk of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
