The Fashion Designer Who Showed Avant Garde Fashion
All of these Japanese fashion designers, Issey Miyake, Rei Kawakubo, and Yohji Yamamoto passed
the same time period in Japan. Though they have their own styles and differences among them, these
fashion designers pursued the same philosophy of 1980 s deconstructionism to create avant garde
fashion. And that is certainly evident in each of their Paris collections, especially their debut shows.
Through this fashion style, Issey Miyake, Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garcons and Yohji Yamamoto
are considered the most successful and internationally known Japanese designers in the West, and they
solidified their position in the French fashion establishment (Kawamura 92). Issey Miyake is actual
the first Japanese fashion designer who showed avant garde fashion in the West. He is called as the
father of anti fashion. In 1973, Miyake was invited to the group Pret a porter which was created for
French ready to wear institution. There are some young other genius fashion designers such as Thierry
Mugler and Sonia Rykiel. Two years later, he made his design shop in 1975 and hold his own Paris
collection. His unique concept A Piece of Cloth got a lot of attention and gave an big impact and
influence for Western people. They never seen that kinds of Miyake s unique and creative style of
dress before. His clothing patterns were very different from the Western styles in that he restructured
the conventional construction of a garment (Cocks 46). His clothes could distributed as

The Thousand And One Nights
It is interesting to see how works of anonymous origin, can have such an impact on the society in
which it is created up to the present, while not being deemed as scholarly literature. The human
condition of being emotionally, selfish beings is something that is not purely tied with that of serious
literature. When scanning the realm of scholarly works The Thousand and One Nights makes an
appearance, ironically. To have a such a source of knowledge from many different countries over a
long period of time is a literature goldmine, which demands to be studied. There is a element of
surprise when the author or in this case authors create more than just a descriptive narrative. Together
they alluded to each other, enhanced each other s works, and created a world that seems to never end.
One might simply think that to write a story within a story is simply a device to make a narrative
interesting. It is rather a way of teaching the characters and the audience how not to repeat history
through an allegorical framework established in the prologue and through the extended
anthropomorphism of in The Tale of the Ox and the Donkey. The Prologue is perhaps one of the most
daunting stories of The Thousand and One Nights. The depiction of a furious king ending the innocent
lives of women he had married and bedded is not exactly comforting. However, it does form a basis
for the allegorical framework found within the text. King Shahrayar and his brother, King Shahzaman

Lust And Flattery In Dante s Inferno By Dante Alighieri
The epic poem, Inferno was written in the 14th century by Dante Alighieri, it follows Dante the
Pilgrim as he descends the 9 Circles of Hell. Along with his aid Virgil, Dante witnesses the different
sins and punishments of each circle, each more gruesome than the last. Dante, the Pilgrim, is able to
see many sinners from these circles and hear their stories, he also learns about the many monstrous
dangers in Hell. Dante Alighieri, an Italian poet, wrote Inferno after he had been banished from his
hometown of Florence. Because of the time period and the fact that he had been exiled, Dantes views
on such sins as lust and flattery were biased. Two sinners that exemplify the development of Lust and
Flattery are Alexander Hamilton and Anne Boleyn. Throughout time, sins such as Lust and Flattery
have stayed the same because of the human need to blame others for their actions and the want for
power.
The behavior of Lust across time has stayed the same because humans are mainly unable to take
responsibility for their actions. Lust is a passionate or overmastering desire or craving, usually in a
sexual sense. Dante views those who lust as carnal sinners [that] are condemned : (Alighieri V, 38).
Alighieri was religious; therefore his views on adultery were very strict and unforgiving. While in
Circle 2: Lust Dante meets Francesca, a noblewoman who had an affair with her husband s brother,
Paolo, all trembling, kiss d me on my mouth. A Galeotto was the book and he that wrote it. That day
we read in it no further (Alighieri V, 137 138). Francesca describes her affair in detail with Dante and
virgil, and instead of taking responsibility, Francesca blames her affair on a book about Lancelot.
Similar to Francesca, Alexander Hamilton, also did not take responsibility for his affair. Hamilton, the
first treasury secretary of the United States, engaged in a torrid affair that he claims was because of his
gender and social status in life. How then can I, with pretensions every way inferior expect to escape?
(Hamilton). Hamilton does not take responsibility, and he doesn t seem to be remorseful about the
affair. He blames the fact he was adulterous on his male nature. Hamilton believes that he had no

The House On Mango Street And The Things They Carried
What s the difference between a young Hispanic girl and a soldier in the Vietnam War? It sounds like
a bad joke with an even worse punchline, but though there may be many true answers to this question,
there are more similarities than one might imagine. These similarities can be observed in Sandra
Cisneros The House on Mango Street and Tim O Brien s The Things They Carried and their main
characters, Esperanza and O Brien, respectively. Both novels divided into non chronological stories,
both involve characters who feel stuck in their situations, and both realize the importance of returning
for the people they left behind. At their most basic levels, The House on Mango Street and The Things
They Carried are both broken down into stories, which, although some reference events and characters
in other stories, do not follow a definite chronological order. The title story in The Things They
Carried, for instance, places its characters in the Vietnam war, but in no specific year of the war, or
place in Vietnam. The next story, Love, begins with the words Many years after the war (O Brien 26),
placing it definitely outside of Vietnam in O Brien s home in Massachusetts, in fact. The next story,
Spin, however, goes back to the men of Alpha Company together in Vietnam. O Brien even makes it
easy to guess that the focus is back on Vietnam, as the first sentence of this story is The war wasn t all
terror and violence (O Brien 30). The stories in The House on Mango

Privatization Of Municipal Solid Waste
The privatization of municipal solid waste is a process by which municipalities decide to contract with
private organizations for the collection and processing of societal waste. President and CEO of Brolin
Enterprises which provides contracting services for pipeline maintenance, tank services, erosion
control, vacs trucking, one call monitoring, right of way clearing, pig tracking, and emergency
response believes municipalities should be more open to privatization of collection services (Begley
2011). Begley believes that communities have resisted privatization because solid waste management
systems have always been considered a utility provided by the public sector (Begley 2011). He points
to the economic downturn of 2008 as a major ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Worrell and Vesilind (2012) private service providers will claim to have greater
efficiencies with less wastefulness, and more motivation for profit while public sector service
providers will claim it is more cost efficient because it is a non profit that does not pay taxes (Worrell
Vesilind 2012). Advocates of privatization such as Begley and Scott would argue that the bureaucratic
restriction of easily accessible resources required to effectively manage municipal solid waste is a
serious restriction which costs time and money. While proponents of public solid waste management
are concerned with the potential monopolization of these systems through mergers and acquisitions
which can stifle market competition (Worrell Vesilind 2012).
By using the situation of Carrollton, Texas in 2004 as an example we can clearly recognize that solid
waste management costs were reduced through privatization. According to Scott (2004) a public
sector department called Carrollton Solid Waste Division (CSW) lost a competition bid for solid waste
services because the department was not able to convince the committee members they would be able
to compete with productivity, experience, and customer service of private sector service providers.
Scott (2004) recognized that costs of service were to

Anne Marie Slaughter And Richard Dorment Essay
In life we are told to have it all by raising a perfect family, getting a beautiful house, and having a high
paying job; but is it possible to have it all? How many people can honestly have it all, when so many
are just trying to survive? In the articles, Why Women Still Can t Have It All and Why Men Still Can t
Have It All, Anne Marie Slaughter and Richard Dorment, discuss how women function in the
workplace and the different expectant outcomes for each, mainly focusing on the upper class. The
primary objective of Slaughter s passage was to show how women are treated poorly and how they are
held to a different standard than their male counterparts. Dorment focused mostly on how neither
women nor men should strive to have it all because nobody can. Together they consider the subjects of
workplace discrimination, housework standards, family involvement, and striving to have it all.
Anne Marie Slaughter constructed the article, Why Women Still Can t Have It All including personal
and statistical measures to prove that, though women have come far, they are not to the standard of
men. She begins the article informing us of her job as the first female director of policy planning at the
State Department in Washington D.C. Admittingly, with such a high profile job and finding herself
struggling to balance her 14 year old son, she made the decision to quit her job after two years.
Accordingly, Slaughter pondered her years working in a high power workplace, realizing

In order to find the median for IB and Others GPA, I must put the GPAs in numerical order. Since both

IB mode: 4.7 and 4.3
Others mode: 3.0

Self Reflection
Coming into a college writing course, I did not expect it to be easy. Throughout high school essays
were very easy to write due to teachers cutting way too much slack and handing out easy grades.
Writing has always been difficult for me, but I feel this is because I have not been challenged yet to
demonstrate my full writing ability. I had yet to develop my own voice as a writer. Throughout this
course, I was met with many challenges to bring out the true writer inside of me and because of this, I
was ultimately able to grow as a writer. The essays that I have written throughout the WRC 1013
course demonstrate that I have developed better annotation skills, communication skills and personal
responsibility skills; however, I still need to improve in proofreading and learning how to receive
more revisions from my peers.
After going through my essays, one self reflection throughout my papers I was able to gather was my
growth in developing good annotation throughout my chosen sources. For example, in my first paper
Behind the Screen VS. The Real World , my annotation and gathering information from sources was
very poor. This is shown in the essay where I completely stated the opposite of what Rita Dove was
trying to say in her piece Loose Ends . I state that, As you can see, this is one of many reasons as to
how so much screen time can have a negative influence on people which is what Rita Dove is
implying in her article ( Behind the Screen Vs. The Real World 2). This

Difference Between Adorno And Max Horkheimer
The Culture Industry Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer
are known as two great critical theorists who are primarily known for their work The Culture Industry:
Enlightenment as Mass Deception. Adorno and Horkheimer originally were members of the Frankfurt
School, which was a group of scholars that were a part of the revival of Marxist thought. Adorno and
Horkheimer were third wave scholars of Marxist thought which meant that they were concerned about
the occurrence of the communist revolution. However, the revolution never took off instead the spread
of fascism and Hitler s regime occurred. Adorno and Horkheimer, both of Jewish descent, were forced

A criticism made by Adorno and Horkheimer that is still relevant to the modern movie industry is the
criticism that the people at the top are no longer so interested in concealing monopoly...Movies and
radio need no longer pretend to be art (Adorno and Horkheimer). The modern movie industry is an
industry of commodities in sense, what this means is that the movies produced today are produced
simply as means for profit and not as form of art. As Adorno and Horkheimer stated the movie makers
distrust any manuscript which is not reassuringly backed by a bestseller (Adorno and Horkheimer) this
attitude can be seen by simply observing the Avengers, Spider man and Transformers franchises.
These types of movies are given top priority at movie studios simply because they are movies with
large target audiences and the movie studios know that they will bring in mass amounts of profits.
These types of movies often lack substance of any kind for example take the Avengers franchise, the
movie itself has very little plot or characterization but it is still produced over and over again because
it is a source of revenue. This is an example of how new media technologies how what Adorno and
Horkheimer mean by when they say art is becoming a commodity (Adorno and Horkheimer). Another

The Butterfly And The Violin Analysis
The Life of a Butterfly
A butterfly s life starts out as a caterpillar, then a chrysalis, and finally the adult butterfly. In the novel
The Butterfly and the Violin, Adele Von Bron start her life out as a caterpillar as Austria s sweetheart
who very dependent on her family. She then became like a chrysalis, when she began to help the
Jewish family by feeding them and trying to help them escape. Towards the end of the novel is when
she transformed into a butterfly, because she had suffered with the struggles of the camp and met
Omara which helped her to become a strong and independent woman. In The Butterfly and the Violin,
Kristy Cambron uses the butterfly as a symbol to show the relation between Adele s life and the life of
a butterfly. In the beginning of the novel Adele s life is most relatable to the caterpillar stage of the
butterfly s life. She relates to a caterpillar at the beginning of the novel, because she is just a teenager
just beginning to start her adult life. By only being a teenager and she still lives with her parents,
Adele is not very independent at the moment. At this point she is making a lot of mistakes and she is
still learning a lot about life . The novel starts out with Adele s life about her playing in the orchestra
and, being known as Austria s Sweetheart who is dependent upon her parents . In the beginning of the
novel Adele s mother does a lot of things for her that she could do herself . This shows the dependency

Virtual Dichotomy
Scientific research using animals has a long legacy in universities. Therefore, it has been able to
assume the un questioned continuation that tradition normally dictates. In simpler terms, it is thought
to be the norm. It is thought to be necessary to the institutes of universities and of education. Up until
the recent curriculum changes British Columbian high schools required the biology curriculums to
integrate the dissection of cow s eyes, and pig fetuses to set students up to believe that animal use is a
necessary evil in the name of scientific pursuit. It is unclear how the new proposed high school
curriculum will address these issues, although there has been the integration of virtual dissections in
the recent years. From there, students ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Medical research is also the largest rationality for UBC s use of animals in research with the Faculty
of Medicine using 69.5% of the 167,019 animals that UBC subjected to experimentation in 2016
(UBC). UBC s website claims that the majority of their animal research is used to help test and create
new medications, vaccines and procedures. Within this statement there lies a feeling that humans must
choose, between using animals for research or losing the human companions we hold so dear. Animal
use in scientific research is often defended for its ability to save human subjects from having to go
through extensive or painful tests, or to save humans from disease and death. It is framed as though
the choice isn t there, it s either the animals or yourself who will perish. Animal experimentation
continues because it appeals to the public s emotions. Greek calls this emotional appeal the fallacy of
your dog or your child (126), the dog being the subject of research and the child being the one saved
by a medical advancement. Even animal experimenters who express negative feelings about having to
preform experiments feel like they cannot stop, that they have no choice (Greek 117). UBC s website
stresses the importance of their uses of animals for medical research. The UBC 2016 Budget Report
shows that the university allocates the most funding to this type of research. Health and medical

The Controversial Role Of Hazing In The Present Day
Hazing is a common ritual found in both academic and employment settings. Although hazing was
instituted a few centuries ago, its prominence can still be seen in modern day society. For that reason,
this paper will examine three areas that includes the background of hazing, the viewpoint comparison
on hazing through two peer reviewed articles, and why hazing is still controversial in the present day.
Background of Hazing
According to Parks, Jones, Ray, Hughey, and Cox (2015), hazing as part of a rite of passage process
dates back to the beginning of mankind with the first documented instances of organized hazing
coming from ancient Greece, where prospective soldiers demonstrated their loyalty through painful
and uncomfortable experiences ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The captain can remind teammates of the hazing prevention workshop and suggest a progressive team
dinner where each senior member of the team provides a food course. (Heibert Klatt, 2001, p. 170 2;
p. 17)
Keep in mind that Waldron s (2012) suggestions for reducing hazing may have little influence due to
the countervailing force of peer pressure (Edelman, 2005, p. 328). Therefore, it is highly unlikely that
this contradictory approach will succeed using a short range tactic to replace a long range strategy
(Fallacies, 2006, More..., para. 1 42; Heibert Klatt, 2001, p. 170 2). Hence, further discussions are
needed to determine which author(s) presented the stronger argument.
Taking all this into account, Waldron (2012) has presented a stronger argument than Josefowitz and
Gadon (1989). The reason for this is due to Waldron (2012) maintaining a neutral position, while
presenting strong scientific evidence on the subject of hazing. Also, the statistics presented by
Waldron (2012) did not have any fallacies when compared to that of Josefowitz and Gadon (1989)
(Fallacies, 2006, More..., para. 1 42). Based upon these differences and how society has changed its
cultural stance on hazing, Waldron (2012) has clearly given the better argument and solution for
stopping hazing. Hence, a further discussion is needed on why hazing remains a controversial

choices are important. Just stop and think, dont you wonder what it would be like without being able
to make your own choices for yourselves. You would be miserable right? You would never be happy

The Figures Of The Human Figure In Hellenistic Art
The human figure is something that artists have portrayed in sculpture for thousands of years. Each
culture and time period had different reasons behind the way they chose to depict humans. In ancient
Egypt, pharaohs were shown as idealized and emotionless, like gods. Yet in Hellenistic art, people
were depicted in dramatic scenes that showed them as very human and emotional. The way humans
have been depicted through sculpture and the reasons behind these canons have evolved and changed
over time.
The earliest examples of the human form in sculpture can be found in the paleolithic era. While in the
Paleolithic era humans were rarely depicted in paintings, they were commonly depicted through
sculpture in small figurines. The majority of these figures were female, with very few males, and over
two hundred have been classified as Venus figurines. These figures were almost always made with
exaggerated breasts, stomach, and hips, which is unlikely to be how women looked during this time.
The proportions were symbolic and not meant to represent a real woman. This is shown in the piece
Venus of Willendorf, a Paleolithic era sculpture. This figure is fairly small at only four inches high,
and it is unable to stand up on its own (see fig. 1). Like most sculptures around this time period, it was
made to be easily carried as the paleolithic people were nomadic (Zygmont). Oddly, she has no

Evaluating High School Students
As a high school student, there are a multitude of things that can factor what type of student you are.
High school students, and just students in general are put under lots of stress and are given high
expectations. Yet, many kids fail to reach these expectations. All in all, students are evaluated on test
scores and how they perform in school. Studying the factors that can affect a student s overall school
performance can help to see what types of environments are most harmful to students and kids in
general. In this case, the environment that is being researched is students that have divorced parents.
Looking mainly to find any relationship between school performance and those in non intact families.
Where non intact families are defined as families where one or neither biological parent is present in
the household, and an intact family has both biological parents present otherwise known as a more

Ancient Year Vs Day Rule Essay
The Ancient Year and A Day Rule
The year and a day rule is a common law rule. In a time when medical miracles and forensics were
either extremely slow or unheard of, time was a more dictating factor in the enforcement of laws and
crimes committed.According to Sir William Blackstone, an English jurist, judge, and politician of the
18th century, a death upgrade to murder requires that the death occur within one year and a day of the
initial injury. When figuring the qualifications tallying begans on the day of infliction.. The belief that
this common law has been laid to rest and unused is incorrect. The idea that based on modern science
and the ability to easier prove cause of death and then build the appropriate case has led to the
widespread dismissal of the year and a day rule. Referring to sections 9 and 10 of Article I, many
appeals based on this rule have been denied because according to the Article, the U.S Constitution
forbids Congress and all states from enacting ex post facto laws defined as Done or made after the
fact; having retroactive force or effect , (Blacks Law pg. 518). The following two cases challenge
retroactive application in a more current perspective. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Also spelled as ageing, this is generally the process of becoming old. It is the in a way the opposite of
immortality. In a broader aspect, it may occur to single cells in an organism also called cellular
senescence or the population of a species, known as population ageing. This process primarily affects
human beings and fungi. In humans, it signifies the accumulation of various changes which occur over
time. The changes include physical, social and psychological changes.
Causes of aging are very uncertain. Besides, there are several factors which predispose an individual
to premature aging. Current theories suggest that this process occurs to due to cellular damage such as
DNA oxidation by free radicals causing biological systems to ... Show more content on

Old persons are also predisposed to various medical conditions including diabetes and irritable bowel
syndrome that may increase the chances of constipation.
The genitourinary system
The bladder and urinary tract depict the epitome of various old age associated conditions. Urinary
incontinence otherwise known as loss of bladder control is a common problem associated with aging.
Besides old age, diabetes and other conditions also contribute to incontinence. Other common
conditions include menopause for women and enlarged prostate for men.
Memory
Advancing age is commonly associated with loss of memory. The inability to maintain both short term
and long term memory is serious. Learning new things or remembering familiar words and names can
be quite daunting.
Senses Eyes and Ears
Advancing age is a common hindrance to the proper functioning of the body senses. The eyes will
have difficulty focusing on near and distant objects. Adapting to different levels of light is the other
common problem. Cataracts, also called clouding of vision is another common condition that results
from changes in eye s lens. Hearing abilities also diminish. With this, you will have difficulties
following a conversation or hearing high frequencies.
Teeth
Receding of the gums is a notable condition in this bracket. As mentioned earlier, old age is associated

Libertarian Party Website Analysis
The top three American Political Parties; the Democratic National Committee, The Grand Old Party or
Republican Party, and the Libertarian Party, each have websites that promote their party to Americans.
Each of these websites provide information about the party, and give options for involvement. These
websites vary in design, content, and organization. Each website contributes to American politics by
providing each party s supporters with information on the party, providing polls and surveys, and the
websites all give individuals multiple options to support whichever party they choose. The official

Personal Statement On Employee Management
Last week I had two shadowing experiences that fell in line with my competencies and two
experiences that did not, but were still extremely important to client management. I worked alongside
the Sales Coordinator Ksenia, the Convention Sales Manager Teagan, the Banquet Manager Luis, and
the Sales Manager Ashley. Last Monday (09/21/15) I had the pleasure of learning the BEO system for
Marriott with the Sales Manager Ashley. Marriott full service hotels do not use Delphi for their BEO s,
instead they use a B.E.O. software specific to Marriott called C.I.T.Y. This is a very difficult software
to operate, and can take months to be completely trained in. Ashley (Sales Manager in charge of BEO
s) who is new to the company and the area was happy to share the knowledge she did know. She didn t
have a full BEO implementation to show me, but she did have a small piece to show me which I found
very interesting. For this specific meeting group, they were have a 3 day meeting that required a
continuous beverage package priced by consumption. C.I.T.Y. is interesting in that it didn t offer an
option to select the continuous beverage package; instead each beverage type had to be selected and
set to price by consumption. Although this was time consuming task, I was able to quickly pick up the
procedure and input the beverage for the last full day of the meeting. This experience lined up
perfectly with my chosen competency Banquet and Catering Sales: Planning Coffee Breaks.

Essay Blue Heron
In Cold Mountain and A Poem for the Blue Heron , tone is established in a multitude of ways. These
two pieces of literature describe the characteristics and actions of a blue heron, both aiming for the
same goal. However, Charles Frazier and Mary Oliver approach their slightly differing tones
employing organization, metaphoric language, and diction.
Organization is a key element in Frazier s and Oliver s work, as it works directly to set the tone, as
well as acting as a symbol of nature. Charles Frazier writes in long, descriptive sentences and
paragraphs. These, along with the carefully chosen words in the smooth sentences, create a relaxing,
peaceful tone and feel to the story. This tone reflects on the symbolic part of structure; ... Show more

Metaphoric language is used in both works to establish tone, but the approaches differ. In Cold
Mountain, Frazier uses similes to bring emphasis on different aspects of nature. For instance, the
author describes the heron s legs and wings as black as the river. This is to continue the smooth, even
tone of the passage and establish that there is a continuous circle, spawning from nature and leading
right back to nature. Relating the heron to another awe inspiring aspect of nature simply elevates its
divinity. Personification is also used in this passage to give the paragraphs an ironic tone. When
Frazier describes the heron as look[ing] high as a man in the slant light with its long shadow blown
out across the water , he establishes a tone of irony. The heron is mocking mankind, who stands in
front of nature (and supposedly above it) and allow themselves to consume it entirely. The irony
continues as the heron looks as if it does not know where to step next, lost in its own conceit. This
ironic tone is a laugh at mankind for being so selfish. However, in the poem, Oliver speaks in the first
person narrative, as if mankind is attached to nature and can comprehend what is happening. This
gives the poem a cynical tone, full of anticipated destruction and isolation. Metaphoric language adds
to tone immensely.
The diction used by the authors is extremely telling in itself as well. In Cold Mountain, Frazier starts
off with the absolute phrase, off in the river

The Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument
A historical context of the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument: United States
President, Barack Obama, declared the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument the largest
oceanic reserve system in the world through an expansion in protected territory by a presidential
proclamation on September 25th, 2014. The reserve system originally was formed on January 6th,
2009 by a proclamation signed by President George W. Bush. The ocean ecosystems now under
protection are to the south and west of Hawaii in waters surrounding small islands and reef systems
under the United States jurisdiction (See Figure 1). These areas include, Kingman Reef, Palmyra
Atoll, Howland Island, Baker Island, Jarvis Island, Johnston Atoll, and Wake Island. The total area
now protected through this reserve system is 782,000 square miles (2,030,000 km2) (Citation). In
these newly protected regions it is now prohibited to fish, hunt, or mine for resources due to these
proclamations. After this expansion, the reserve system will continue to serve as an invaluable area to
monitor the effects of climate change and ocean acidification especially on reef and deep water
systems. The reserve will also serve as a valuable repository for plant, animal, and microbial life for
humans to use for discovery and to aid in restocking depleted resources elsewhere. Many new species
and forms of life still await discovery in these protected waters that will yield advances in technology

The Universal Time Lapse Capsule
The Universal Time Lapse Capsule, or TLC, is a hand held device shaped like a huge pill with a dial
in the middle for you to decide which time period you would like to travel to. It is still a very new
device that can malfunction at any given time. The Victorian Age is a time period that anyone from the
modern time period would boldly stand out in. People talk, dress, socialize, and entertain themselves
in very different manners. This guide was created to help you survive through this time era if
something were to ever go wrong with your TLC.
Where to fall in Society:
Social classism was a huge deal during the Victorian Age. Everyone only mingled and married within
their class. There are some cases where people married slightly higher or slightly lower, but those
cases were rare. As time traveler that no one has ever heard of, you will best fit in the working class.
You can better claim being poor from another town over than being rich because the rich people came
in rarities, therefore they were all acquainted with each other.
Men:
You will best fall under the working class category in the Victorian hierarchy, which is very close to
the bottom of the social pyramid. Life will be very hard and seem unbearable, but you are strong
enough to pull through it. However, you may feel disrespected in certain situations, but you must
remember your place. It is imperative that you do not step out of line with the higher classmen. These
men have the power to throw you in jail if you

John Cages Influence On Society
As one of the most radical composers in the 20th century, John Cage introduced new ideas of what
music is. Breaking away from the traditional idea that music stems solely from the musician s
preconceived and structured arrangement of sounds from specific instruments, Cage s philosophy of
music is based on the idea that all sounds can work cooperatively to create music, including those
from the environment.
Strongly influenced by the principles in Zen Buddhism and Indian music, Cage began to explore new
medians for music; He incorporated different elements by relying heavily on chance and randomness.
Cage worked hard to create pieces that detached himself, as the composer, far away from the piece
itself as possible to allow the listener

Reducing Deforestation And The Loss Of Biodiversity
When the UN created Sustainable Development Goals during their meeting in New York City from
September 25th 27th, there were many targets that were set in order to improve Terrestrial Processes.
This was clearly an important issue that the UN felt the need to spend much time on in order to
address properly. Ultimately, several of the targets include certain fragments that are unable to be
measured accurately, or are given targets that are too general. However, many targets can still be
measured accurately and examples of this include Targets 15.2 and 15.5 that aim to halt deforestation
and the loss of biodiversity. This can be measured through extensive documentation of a forest s area
or by analyzing the amount of biodiversity within it. The studies are done usually by both countries,
such as Canada, and by wildlife groups such as WWF (Effects of Deforestation, Fitzsimmons)
(Deforestation, Bradford).
This is exceptionally similar to target 15.3, which aims to restore degraded land and soil from
desertification. Countries and the UN itself mostly measure this target. An example would be the
United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) that determined severe land
degradation is affecting 168 countries worldwide (Desertification Crisis, King).
Target 15.7 calls for an end to poaching and trafficking of protected species of flora and fauna, as well
as addressing the supply of illegal wildlife products. In m opinion, both of these can be measured to a

America are counting on the government, not their family and the church as it used to be. Now people
are putting their trust and hope in the government and not the church as it should be. The church used

For example, back then, if someone in the family was having a problem, another family member
would take their children. Now in today s time, the child is taken away from his or her parents and

government also chooses where their children go to school, if they go to public school, so the families
have no say in what school they want their children to go to. The school they are sent to depends on
where they live. Now, instead of the families teaching discipline, it is mostly teachers and the police

Analysis Of The Book The Lottery

Blind Tradition Every society in the modern world has some form of tradition that has been passed
down from generation to generation, and no matter what the custom is, people will continue to follow
it due to the human nature to resist change. Even if there is an urge for change, it will likely be
suppressed and seen as an act of rebellion as most people follow tradition simply because that s just
how it is , and never seem to question why. Suzanne Collin s novel The Hunger Games and Shirley
Jackson s short story The Lottery best illustrate this point by showing how a violent annual tradition
affects a society and its innocent people. The Hunger Games has such uncanny similarities to The
Lottery that it almost seems as if Collins used Jackson s story as a source of inspiration for her novel.
Both The Hunger Games and The Lottery are extremely similar thematically in the sense that
sheepishly following tradition can often be detrimental to society because it can lead to adverse
consequences such as death, ignorance, and a society with no desire to change. Although both works
are very much identical, the primary distinguishing characteristics are the setting and tone. The
Lottery takes place in a small village with about three hundred inhabitants, while The Hunger Games
involves a much larger post apocalyptic world consisting of thirteen districts known as Panem. In The
Lottery , the introduction presents itself

the churches have utilized this since the nineteenth century. This has been done over and over for

Why Do Gamete Cells Come Into Play
Do you ever wonder how babies are made? Well, that s where gamete cells come into play. Gamete
cells are haploid cells, or reproductive cells. These cells possess one pair of chromosomes from the
parent. During meiosis, haploid cells are divided and the chromosomes fuse together producing
genetically new instructions. Gamete cells play a crucial role in the development of a baby.
Meiosis is the process in which the gamete cells turn from haploid to diploid. Meiosis involves eight
stages: Prophase 1, Metaphase 1, Anaphase 1, Telophase 1, Prophase 2, Metaphase 2, Anaphase 2, and
Telophase 2. Prophase 1 is when chromosomes cross over. The chromosomes exchange genetic

Psychedelic Drug Use Essay
Psychedelic drug use has been present in both traditions and used recreationally for millennia. Their
use can be seen in all corners of the planet by many sects of religions and indigenous peoples. Reasons
for usage vary from religious or medical purposes, hunting, war, and spirituality. The drug use was
viewed with much less of a negative stigma than it is today.
It wasn t until recently that the government cracked down on the use of psychedelic drugs. They
placed many of the drugs into schedules in which the legality of the drug was assigned. Most of the
drugs can be found on the list of schedule one substances. Schedule one drugs are drugs that have a

Literary Analysis Of Threating And Peter Weir s Dead Poets...
Poetry is Writing that formulates a concentrated imaginative awareness of experience in language

This quote explains that people can not just express their feelings through action and words but, they
can also use poetry. Dead Poets Society by Peter Weir was a film about a group of boys forming the
Dead Poets Society with the influence of a teacher. John Keating was one of the main characters in the
film. He was a teacher from a boarding school. Mr. Keating taught poetry in an innovative way. He
had brown hair, and brown eyes and dressed up in a suit. O me! O life! by Walt Whitman is a poem
about the author questioning his existence. People throughout the author s life betrayed his
expectations and he considers himself as one of these people. Both John Keating and Walt Whitman
lived life and taught in an interesting way. Keating believed in himself while Whitman didn t believe
in himself and thought he was the biggest failure in his life. The main character and the author both
contributed a verse to the students and themselves. A breakdown of how two different ways life should

only get that opportunity once so, take it while you have the chance. Mr. Keating was trying to live

Social Media s Impact On Society
In today s society not all people welcome social media into their lives and thus restrict their access and
or involvement when it comes to the abundances of social media outlets. However, social media has
indeed taken the lives of our children, adolescents, and families by the collar. Social media plays a
pivotal part affecting everyday life as we know it today. Despite these claims, the advancements in
technology have evolved, thus creating a society that thrives on the dependency of social media
outlets. This addiction is the craving of being instantly connected to everything and everyone. Being
connected and having instant access to this so called Information Highway, surely allows for
convenience and simplicity, but this also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Over the past years, social media truly has become something much more than just the typical esoteric
jumble of technologies, but instead has driven contemporary culture offering sites and services to
accommodate everyone and everything your heart desires. With advancements in technology
becoming the forefront of our information and communication ecosystem. These social networking
platforms are literally taking over the business arena becoming the driving force in determining
whether a business is staying relevant, not to mention taking advantage of emerging opportunities. As
of today there have been a surge of social media outlets which have made their way into mainstream
society. Today, many of these platforms are commonly known as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram,
Pinterest, Snapchat, LinkedIn, LinkedIn Pulse, Google+, Xing, Renren, Disqus, Tumblr, Twoo,
MyMFB, YouTube and Vine. When browsing these particular sites people become connected to a
much larger community with a press of a button. These online or virtual communities occasionally
trump the populations of countries. However, such ease with these casual connections in a very fast
paced technological world also has many downsides. Social media has made it much more
complicated for people to distinguish between meaningful and productive relationships in which we
foster and cherish for the long haul versus the numerous casual relationships formed through social
media.

Immigrate To Canada
Top Reasons to Immigrate to Canada
Canada has a multicultural society and relies heavily on immigration. The aging population of Canada
makes it imminent for them to open up their gates for immigrants from other countries. According to a
research, it was found that Canadians above the age of 65 years comprise 16.1% of Canada s total
population and compared to this the population of under 15s is considerably low. This has created a
void that must be filled with the help of immigration.
Major problems pertaining to aging population are:
● Huge burden on the economy
● Less workers in the workforce
● More expenditure on pension and healthcare
● More taxes for the current workforce
The aging population of Canada has become a ticking time bomb ... Show more content on

The country also provides a right to education to its Citizens and permanent residents. Thousands of
international students migrate every year to continue their edification in one of the top notch institutes
in Canada, This means that you are not the only one who is thinking of migrating to Canada for
education.
Travel
Canada is also a great travel destination and can provide a great bang for every buck you put into your
travel. The iconic Niagara Falls is one of the most alluring sites to witness. Canada has spots for
people travelling in solitude or in a group.
Vancouver houses the hockey team vancouver canucks and is filled with places that can provide you
an exotic wining and dining experience. The SkyTrain enables travellers to to soak in the majestic
view of Canadian cities from quite a height. Some urban cities even have a bucolic setting due to the
type of architecture. There are other great spots that you can visit like Quebec, Granville islands and
so on.
Ease of Immigration
Just to reiterate my point, Canada needs immigrants and that is why the immigration process focuses
on young and skilled workers. This is quite apposite as skilled workers will be able to contribute a lot
to the economy of Canada. Canada does not just make it easy for you to migrate but for your family as

  • 2. The Fashion Designer Who Showed Avant Garde Fashion All of these Japanese fashion designers, Issey Miyake, Rei Kawakubo, and Yohji Yamamoto passed the same time period in Japan. Though they have their own styles and differences among them, these fashion designers pursued the same philosophy of 1980 s deconstructionism to create avant garde fashion. And that is certainly evident in each of their Paris collections, especially their debut shows. Through this fashion style, Issey Miyake, Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garcons and Yohji Yamamoto are considered the most successful and internationally known Japanese designers in the West, and they solidified their position in the French fashion establishment (Kawamura 92). Issey Miyake is actual the first Japanese fashion designer who showed avant garde fashion in the West. He is called as the father of anti fashion. In 1973, Miyake was invited to the group Pret a porter which was created for French ready to wear institution. There are some young other genius fashion designers such as Thierry Mugler and Sonia Rykiel. Two years later, he made his design shop in 1975 and hold his own Paris collection. His unique concept A Piece of Cloth got a lot of attention and gave an big impact and influence for Western people. They never seen that kinds of Miyake s unique and creative style of dress before. • 3. The Thousand And One Nights It is interesting to see how works of anonymous origin, can have such an impact on the society in which it is created up to the present, while not being deemed as scholarly literature. The human condition of being emotionally, selfish beings is something that is not purely tied with that of serious literature. When scanning the realm of scholarly works The Thousand and One Nights makes an appearance, ironically. To have a such a source of knowledge from many different countries over a long period of time is a literature goldmine, which demands to be studied. There is a element of surprise when the author or in this case authors create more than just a descriptive narrative. Together they alluded to each other, enhanced each other s works, and created a world that seems to never end. One might simply think that to write a story within a story is simply a device to make a narrative interesting. It is rather a way of teaching the characters and the audience how not to repeat history through an allegorical framework established in the prologue and through the extended anthropomorphism of in The Tale of the Ox and the Donkey. The Prologue is perhaps one of the most daunting stories of The Thousand and One Nights. The depiction of a furious king ending the innocent lives of women he had married and bedded is not exactly comforting. However, it does form a basis for the allegorical framework found within the text. King Shahrayar and his brother, King Shahzaman have a similar ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Lust And Flattery In Dante s Inferno By Dante Alighieri The epic poem, Inferno was written in the 14th century by Dante Alighieri, it follows Dante the Pilgrim as he descends the 9 Circles of Hell. Along with his aid Virgil, Dante witnesses the different sins and punishments of each circle, each more gruesome than the last. Dante, the Pilgrim, is able to see many sinners from these circles and hear their stories, he also learns about the many monstrous dangers in Hell. Dante Alighieri, an Italian poet, wrote Inferno after he had been banished from his hometown of Florence. Because of the time period and the fact that he had been exiled, Dantes views on such sins as lust and flattery were biased. Two sinners that exemplify the development of Lust and Flattery are Alexander Hamilton and Anne Boleyn. Throughout time, sins such as Lust and Flattery have stayed the same because of the human need to blame others for their actions and the want for power. The behavior of Lust across time has stayed the same because humans are mainly unable to take responsibility for their actions. Lust is a passionate or overmastering desire or craving, usually in a sexual sense. Dante views those who lust as carnal sinners [that] are condemned : (Alighieri V, 38). Alighieri was religious; therefore his views on adultery were very strict and unforgiving. While in Circle 2: Lust Dante meets Francesca, a noblewoman who had an affair with her husband s brother, Paolo, all trembling, kiss d me on my mouth. A Galeotto was the book and he that wrote it. That day we read in it no further (Alighieri V, 137 138). Francesca describes her affair in detail with Dante and virgil, and instead of taking responsibility, Francesca blames her affair on a book about Lancelot. Similar to Francesca, Alexander Hamilton, also did not take responsibility for his affair. Hamilton, the first treasury secretary of the United States, engaged in a torrid affair that he claims was because of his gender and social status in life. How then can I, with pretensions every way inferior expect to escape? (Hamilton). Hamilton does not take responsibility, and he doesn t seem to be remorseful about the affair. • 5. The House On Mango Street And The Things They Carried What s the difference between a young Hispanic girl and a soldier in the Vietnam War? It sounds like a bad joke with an even worse punchline, but though there may be many true answers to this question, there are more similarities than one might imagine. These similarities can be observed in Sandra Cisneros The House on Mango Street and Tim O Brien s The Things They Carried and their main characters, Esperanza and O Brien, respectively. Both novels divided into non chronological stories, both involve characters who feel stuck in their situations, and both realize the importance of returning for the people they left behind. At their most basic levels, The House on Mango Street and The Things They Carried are both broken down into stories, which, although some reference events and characters in other stories, do not follow a definite chronological order. The title story in The Things They Carried, for instance, places its characters in the Vietnam war, but in no specific year of the war, or place in Vietnam. The next story, Love, begins with the words Many years after the war (O Brien 26), placing it definitely outside of Vietnam in O Brien s home in Massachusetts, in fact. The next story, Spin, however, goes back to the men of Alpha Company together in Vietnam. O Brien even makes it easy to guess that the focus is back on Vietnam, as the first sentence of this story is The war wasn t all terror and violence (O Brien 30). Privatization Of Municipal Solid Waste The privatization of municipal solid waste is a process by which municipalities decide to contract with private organizations for the collection and processing of societal waste. President and CEO of Brolin Enterprises which provides contracting services for pipeline maintenance, tank services, erosion control, vacs trucking, one call monitoring, right of way clearing, pig tracking, and emergency response believes municipalities should be more open to privatization of collection services (Begley 2011). According to Worrell and Vesilind (2012) private service providers will claim to have greater efficiencies with less wastefulness, and more motivation for profit while public sector service providers will claim it is more cost efficient because it is a non profit that does not pay taxes (Worrell Vesilind 2012). Advocates of privatization such as Begley and Scott would argue that the bureaucratic restriction of easily accessible resources required to effectively manage municipal solid waste is a serious restriction which costs time and money. While proponents of public solid waste management are concerned with the potential monopolization of these systems through mergers and acquisitions which can stifle market competition (Worrell Vesilind 2012). By using the situation of Carrollton, Texas in 2004 as an example we can clearly recognize that solid waste management costs were reduced through privatization. According to Scott (2004) a public sector department called Carrollton Solid Waste Division (CSW) lost a competition bid for solid waste services because the department was not able to convince the committee members they would be able to compete with productivity, experience, and customer service of private sector service providers. • 7. Anne Marie Slaughter And Richard Dorment Essay In life we are told to have it all by raising a perfect family, getting a beautiful house, and having a high paying job; but is it possible to have it all? How many people can honestly have it all, when so many are just trying to survive? In the articles, Why Women Still Can t Have It All and Why Men Still Can t Have It All, Anne Marie Slaughter and Richard Dorment, discuss how women function in the workplace and the different expectant outcomes for each, mainly focusing on the upper class. The primary objective of Slaughter s passage was to show how women are treated poorly and how they are held to a different standard than their male counterparts. Dorment focused mostly on how neither women nor men should strive to have it all because nobody can. Together they consider the subjects of workplace discrimination, housework standards, family involvement, and striving to have it all. Anne Marie Slaughter constructed the article, Why Women Still Can t Have It All including personal and statistical measures to prove that, though women have come far, they are not to the standard of men. She begins the article informing us of her job as the first female director of policy planning at the State Department in Washington D.C. Admittingly, with such a high profile job and finding herself struggling to balance her 14 year old son, she made the decision to quit her job after two years. Throughout high school essays were very easy to write due to teachers cutting way too much slack and handing out easy grades. Writing has always been difficult for me, but I feel this is because I have not been challenged yet to demonstrate my full writing ability. I had yet to develop my own voice as a writer. Throughout this course, I was met with many challenges to bring out the true writer inside of me and because of this, I was ultimately able to grow as a writer. The essays that I have written throughout the WRC 1013 course demonstrate that I have developed better annotation skills, communication skills and personal responsibility skills; however, I still need to improve in proofreading and learning how to receive more revisions from my peers. After going through my essays, one self reflection throughout my papers I was able to gather was my growth in developing good annotation throughout my chosen sources. These types of movies are given top priority at movie studios simply because they are movies with large target audiences and the movie studios know that they will bring in mass amounts of profits. Up until the recent curriculum changes British Columbian high schools required the biology curriculums to integrate the dissection of cow s eyes, and pig fetuses to set students up to believe that animal use is a necessary evil in the name of scientific pursuit. UBC s website claims that the majority of their animal research is used to help test and create new medications, vaccines and procedures. Within this statement there lies a feeling that humans must choose, between using animals for research or losing the human companions we hold so dear. Animal use in scientific research is often defended for its ability to save human subjects from having to go through extensive or painful tests, or to save humans from disease and death. It is framed as though the choice isn t there, it s either the animals or yourself who will perish. Animal experimentation continues because it appeals to the public s emotions. Greek calls this emotional appeal the fallacy of your dog or your child (126), the dog being the subject of research and the child being the one saved by a medical advancement. Even animal experimenters who express negative feelings about having to preform experiments feel like they cannot stop, that they have no choice (Greek 117). Although hazing was instituted a few centuries ago, its prominence can still be seen in modern day society. For that reason, this paper will examine three areas that includes the background of hazing, the viewpoint comparison on hazing through two peer reviewed articles, and why hazing is still controversial in the present day. Background of Hazing According to Parks, Jones, Ray, Hughey, and Cox (2015), hazing as part of a rite of passage process dates back to the beginning of mankind with the first documented instances of organized hazing coming from ancient Greece, where prospective soldiers demonstrated their loyalty through painful and uncomfortable experiences ... Therefore, it is highly unlikely that this contradictory approach will succeed using a short range tactic to replace a long range strategy (Fallacies, 2006, More..., para. 1 42; Heibert Klatt, 2001, p. 170 2). Hence, further discussions are needed to determine which author(s) presented the stronger argument. Taking all this into account, Waldron (2012) has presented a stronger argument than Josefowitz and Gadon (1989). The reason for this is due to Waldron (2012) maintaining a neutral position, while presenting strong scientific evidence on the subject of hazing. Also, the statistics presented by Waldron (2012) did not have any fallacies when compared to that of Josefowitz and Gadon (1989) (Fallacies, 2006, More..., para. 1 42). • 16. The Figures Of The Human Figure In Hellenistic Art The human figure is something that artists have portrayed in sculpture for thousands of years. Each culture and time period had different reasons behind the way they chose to depict humans. In ancient Egypt, pharaohs were shown as idealized and emotionless, like gods. Yet in Hellenistic art, people were depicted in dramatic scenes that showed them as very human and emotional. The way humans have been depicted through sculpture and the reasons behind these canons have evolved and changed over time. The earliest examples of the human form in sculpture can be found in the paleolithic era. While in the Paleolithic era humans were rarely depicted in paintings, they were commonly depicted through sculpture in small figurines. The majority of these figures were female, with very few males, and over two hundred have been classified as Venus figurines. These figures were almost always made with exaggerated breasts, stomach, and hips, which is unlikely to be how women looked during this time. The proportions were symbolic and not meant to represent a real woman. This is shown in the piece Venus of Willendorf, a Paleolithic era sculpture. This figure is fairly small at only four inches high, and it is unable to stand up on its own (see fig. 1). • 27. Essay Blue Heron In Cold Mountain and A Poem for the Blue Heron , tone is established in a multitude of ways. These two pieces of literature describe the characteristics and actions of a blue heron, both aiming for the same goal. However, Charles Frazier and Mary Oliver approach their slightly differing tones employing organization, metaphoric language, and diction. Organization is a key element in Frazier s and Oliver s work, as it works directly to set the tone, as well as acting as a symbol of nature. Charles Frazier writes in long, descriptive sentences and paragraphs. These, along with the carefully chosen words in the smooth sentences, create a relaxing, peaceful tone and feel to the story. This tone reflects on the symbolic part of structure; ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Metaphoric language is used in both works to establish tone, but the approaches differ. In Cold Mountain, Frazier uses similes to bring emphasis on different aspects of nature. For instance, the author describes the heron s legs and wings as black as the river. This is to continue the smooth, even tone of the passage and establish that there is a continuous circle, spawning from nature and leading right back to nature. Relating the heron to another awe inspiring aspect of nature simply elevates its divinity. Personification is also used in this passage to give the paragraphs an ironic tone. When Frazier describes the heron as look[ing] high as a man in the slant light with its long shadow blown out across the water , he establishes a tone of irony. The heron is mocking mankind, who stands in front of nature (and supposedly above it) and allow themselves to consume it entirely. The irony continues as the heron looks as if it does not know where to step next, lost in its own conceit. This ironic tone is a laugh at mankind for being so selfish. However, in the poem, Oliver speaks in the first person narrative, as if mankind is attached to nature and can comprehend what is happening. This gives the poem a cynical tone, full of anticipated destruction and isolation. Metaphoric language adds to tone immensely. The diction used by the authors is extremely telling in itself as well. In Cold Mountain, Frazier starts off with the absolute phrase, off in the river ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The reserve system originally was formed on January 6th, 2009 by a proclamation signed by President George W. Bush. The ocean ecosystems now under protection are to the south and west of Hawaii in waters surrounding small islands and reef systems under the United States jurisdiction (See Figure 1). These areas include, Kingman Reef, Palmyra Atoll, Howland Island, Baker Island, Jarvis Island, Johnston Atoll, and Wake Island. The total area now protected through this reserve system is 782,000 square miles (2,030,000 km2) (Citation). In these newly protected regions it is now prohibited to fish, hunt, or mine for resources due to these proclamations. After this expansion, the reserve system will continue to serve as an invaluable area to monitor the effects of climate change and ocean acidification especially on reef and deep water systems. The reserve will also serve as a valuable repository for plant, animal, and microbial life for humans to use for discovery and to aid in restocking depleted resources elsewhere. You can better claim being poor from another town over than being rich because the rich people came in rarities, therefore they were all acquainted with each other. Breaking away from the traditional idea that music stems solely from the musician s preconceived and structured arrangement of sounds from specific instruments, Cage s philosophy of music is based on the idea that all sounds can work cooperatively to create music, including those from the environment. Strongly influenced by the principles in Zen Buddhism and Indian music, Cage began to explore new medians for music; He incorporated different elements by relying heavily on chance and randomness. Reducing Deforestation And The Loss Of Biodiversity When the UN created Sustainable Development Goals during their meeting in New York City from September 25th 27th, there were many targets that were set in order to improve Terrestrial Processes. This was clearly an important issue that the UN felt the need to spend much time on in order to address properly. Ultimately, several of the targets include certain fragments that are unable to be measured accurately, or are given targets that are too general. However, many targets can still be measured accurately and examples of this include Targets 15.2 and 15.5 that aim to halt deforestation and the loss of biodiversity. This can be measured through extensive documentation of a forest s area or by analyzing the amount of biodiversity within it. The studies are done usually by both countries, such as Canada, and by wildlife groups such as WWF (Effects of Deforestation, Fitzsimmons) (Deforestation, Bradford). This is exceptionally similar to target 15.3, which aims to restore degraded land and soil from desertification. Countries and the UN itself mostly measure this target. An example would be the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) that determined severe land degradation is affecting 168 countries worldwide (Desertification Crisis, King). Target 15.7 calls for an end to poaching and trafficking of protected species of flora and fauna, as well as addressing the supply of illegal wildlife products. Analysis Of The Book The Lottery Austin Walker Erickson English 12 20 November 2014 Blind Tradition Every society in the modern world has some form of tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation, and no matter what the custom is, people will continue to follow it due to the human nature to resist change. Even if there is an urge for change, it will likely be suppressed and seen as an act of rebellion as most people follow tradition simply because that s just how it is , and never seem to question why. Suzanne Collin s novel The Hunger Games and Shirley Jackson s short story The Lottery best illustrate this point by showing how a violent annual tradition affects a society and its innocent people. The Hunger Games has such uncanny similarities to The Lottery that it almost seems as if Collins used Jackson s story as a source of inspiration for her novel. Both The Hunger Games and The Lottery are extremely similar thematically in the sense that sheepishly following tradition can often be detrimental to society because it can lead to adverse consequences such as death, ignorance, and a society with no desire to change. Although both works are very much identical, the primary distinguishing characteristics are the setting and tone. The Lottery takes place in a small village with about three hundred inhabitants, while The Hunger Games involves a much larger post apocalyptic world consisting of thirteen districts known as Panem.
