Automatist Utopian Themes In Acharnians and Birds
During the 5th century BCE, Old Comedy was the most prevalent comedic form in Ancient Greece.
This was largely due to the success of Athenian playwright, Aristophanes. His plays were frenetic,
visual and personal, often containing historical figures. In particular, Aristophanes comedies contained
automatist utopian themes that were used to satirize various aspects of 5th century Greece, often in
Athens. The present essay will first define utopia and the automatist subtype. Then it will explore
Aristophanes usage of automatist utopian themes in his plays Acharnians and Peace. Specifically, this
paper will argue that Aristophanes used themes associated with automatist utopia to satirize war, the
excess of the aristocracy, and the ignorance of the lower classes in 5th century Greece.
Before analyzing specific passages from Aristophanic comedy, it is essential to understand the
definition of utopia. The word, utopia was invented by author Thomas More in his 1516 book of the
same name. More derived the word from the Greek, ou topos and eu topos [which together make]...a
place which does not exist, that is not here, but which is also good (Ruffell 474). This definition is
interesting given that many of Aristophanes plays take place in 5th century Athens. It suggests that
Aristophanes was creating an Athenian world that was better but not based in reality.
This essay will focus predominantly on Aristophanes usage of automatist utopian tropes. The principal
component of an

Theme Of Wait And Hope In The Count Of Monte Cristo
The Count of Monte Cristo, written by Alexandre Dumas, is an adventure novel published in 1844 in
France which gained worldwide popularity for its universal themes. Dumas incorporated themes of
moral justice, ultimate happiness, and hope. These themes are apparent throughout this novel, where
the main character Edmond Dantes, or The Count of Monte Cristo, takes justice into his own hands,
and plays God to get his vengeance on those who have wronged him. In the following essay I will
analyze the true meaning of wait and hope found in this novel. Edmond Dantes had an extremely
successful young life, he was engaged, he was about to be captain of a ship, and he was quite popular
all before the age of 20. Unfortunately, who he thought were his friends were envious of all his
success. Fernand Mondego was in love with his fiance Mercedes, his cohort Danglars wanted to have
the success that he had for himself, and Caderousse was jealous of him as well. Together, the trio
destroyed his life by putting him in prison to steal everything good away from him. Danglars created
the plot to frame Dantès for treason, Fernand mailed the letter they constructed, and Villefort sent the
Count to jail only to protect his own father and himself. Dantes spent fourteen years in prison, but in
this time he grew up and discovered his true values with the help of his greatest mentor and jail
neighbor Abbe Faria. He became a teacher to him during their several years as prisoners, and he taught

Gender Inequality In Boys And Girls By Alice Munro
In Alice Munro s Boys and Girls inequality is a proven action throughout the story. Gender roles and
stereotypes is what occur when the role or behavior is taught to a person as appropriate to their gender.
Alice Munro shows us in the story that in a second someone can change based off of what someone
else thinks they should be and do.
For example in the short story it shows us that women should be in the kitchen and men should be
outside working in the fields and providing for his family. When reading a poem entitled Gender
Inequality by
Ella Linero, it tells us that men and women are put into a system where gender inequality is being
ruled in the world. That men and women had to act a certain way and that women should be feminine
while on the other hand men should only be masculine. The time in which the short story Boys and
Girls took place was a time when men and women were not equal. Mothers had traditional roles,
which often left them working in the house while men also had their roles outside of the house. The
male was the dominate figure while the woman had to be subservient. You didn t see women outside
unless they had to go outside and does something for example, hang the clothes on wires and so on.
Gender Inequality took a toll on women in the early 1950 s.
In the short story Boys and Girls the main character is a young girl who struggles within herself and
also has external struggles as her father tries to change who she is and force her into a gender role that
he thinks is important. Munro does not give the girl a name and by doing this the protagonist is seen as
someone who has no identity and no power. This little girl in the story helps her father in their fox
breading farm which she enjoyed so much. Sadly that all changed for her as she got older and her help
wasn t needed. The narrator had problems coming in to terms with the role she was to lead. She
wanted to work outside with her father doing the work that she only knew to do and this work was so
important to her. But sadly the narrators mother tried to her in to work inside the house which I would
say to wing her off of what she enjoyed so much in the fox farm. The narrator didn t like being in the
house doing what her mother was

The Effects Of Globalization On Contemporary And...
Globalization is the interaction among people, companies and governments of different nations. It is a
process that is driven by international trade and investment but, is also supported by information
technology (What is Globalization?). Large corporations have taken advantage of foreign markets by
building factories in less developed countries and through using established marketing arrangements
with foreign partners. A defining feature of globalization, therefore, is an international, industrial and
financial business structure (What is Globalization?). In this essay, I am going to consider the effects
of globalization on contemporary, developing and indigenous cultures. This will include looking at
both the negative effects as well as the benefits of globalization on the world as a whole.
Globalization is profoundly controversial. Some people argue that this international change allows
poor countries and their citizens to develop economically and raise their standards of living. Others
claim that the creation of an international free market has only benefited multinational corporations in
the Western world at the expense of local enterprise and cultures and by the exploitation of less
developed countries (What is Globalization?).
Firstly, Globalization has had a large effect on contemporary culture. For example, technological
development is as a big part of globalization and has transformed many cultures from subsidence
farming to commercial farming, raising cash from

How Does Shakespeare Show Loyalty In Othello
Reconsidering Loyalty and Honesty in Shakespeare s Othello
Othello is full of betrayals and broken bonds from almost all of the relationships that Shakespeare s
characters form in the play. Loyalty and honesty, or the lack thereof, are both essential parts of the
friendships and meaningful bonds in the play. Society perceives loyalty as the faithfulness in those in
relationships and those that have created a certain bond, and honesty as sincere without deceit or
untruthfulness. This paper focuses on Othello, arguing that the traditional ideas of loyalty, with an
emphasis on honesty, in relationships should be rethought through the many characters interactions
and motives. By examining how traditional definitions of loyalty and honesty in ... Show more content

Othello married Desdemona out of his love for her, but eventually kills her because he no longer
believes that she is loyal, while Emilia, Desdemona s attendant and Iago s wife, tries to convince him
otherwise and calls Iago a betrayer.
Shakespeare does not waste any time developing the manipulative character of Iago, as his
Machiavellian actions are introduced in the first scene of Othello. Iago is a soldier in the Venetian
army, who wanted the position of the lieutenant. When Othello, the Venetian army general, appoints
Cassio to this position instead of Iago, he begins to portray a revengeful character with problematic
actions. When Iago states, I am not what I am (1.1.64), this is the first notion that the audience and the
characters will not know who he is because his thoughts and his actions are different. He says this to
prove that Othello truly does not know who he is and that he may seem good on the outside, but it bad
on the inside. In his article, I am not what I am Destructive Emotions in an Organizational Hierarchy:
The Case of Othello and Iago, Chris Poulson argues that Iago is Shakespeare s most complex and
powerful character as we see him plotting revenge and his hatred for Othello in the first scene, which
sets the tone for what is to come in the tragedy.

In time of economic crisis, companies are looking for innovative methods to improve production and
to meet the needs of a diverse workforce in order to improve or maintain the organization s profit
margin in a stress global economy. Indeed, companies are extremely concerned about their future, as
well as, preventing closure of their establishment. SimmonsCompany is no exception. However, how

Now, it is a shared vision by the top, middle, and lower levels of the company with one mission in
mind to do what is in the best interest of company. The company should use the top down and bottom
up design in implementing the GGOL program. However, the company should employ a professional
evaluation team to determine which plant should be the catalyst to receive the program. After selecting
the plant, the program should start at the top level of the plant because they are responsible for the day
to day operation of the plant and if they buy into the program other levels are more willing to accept it.
The top level can assist in delivering the GGOL program to the other employees. The next level
should be the middle level because they are responsible for inspiring the workers to work collectively
towards a common goal, i.e., what is in the best interest of the plant. Needless to say, these individual
are very reluctant to change, but must be done gradual due to their commitment to the company,
embedded old core values, and long history with the company. When the worker realizes that the
change is positive, their outlook improves and this attitude has a snowball effect. That is, one worker
at a time starts to embrace middle management s vision for the company. Now, the workers are willing
to trust middle manager because they are open for suggestions and are encouraging empowerment of
workers, unlike the past,

Molecular Visualization With High Throughput Screening (...
The in silico discovery of drugs saves millions of lives each year. As such, there is extensive research
into drug discovery. Molecular visualization is one of the most important parts of structural biology
and the drug discovery process. Molecular visualization with high throughput screening (HTS) has
been successful in the discovery of new drugs. Though HTS has been effective it is expensive and
covers a limited space. For these reasons, the high level visualization of molecules provides help to
cut the work performed in HTS. Together, they offer one of the most effective methods in structure
based drug discovery. On the whole, my aim is to simulate molecules to find hidden protein ligand
binding sites for the discovery of new drugs. I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This analysis follows a shift in genomics from identifying molecules to analyzing interactions in the
molecular network [12]. The effectiveness of each application is found by comparing several features
offered. Features compared include cost, availability, extensibility, difficulty, command line access,
scripting, selection and documentation [14], [15]. By comparing these categories, I decide the most
effective tool to use in structure based drug discovery. In a classic approach to drug, discovery testing
would begin in vivo. This would need the analysis of millions of molecules. The molecular
visualization of protein ligand interaction analysis tools can cut the number of molecules that need
screening by calculating their potential docking scores. I can narrow the scope down to only those that
are most likely to show strong performance. The first tool I look at is Cytoscape [7]. A standalone
application that has historically been successful in drug discovery. In addition, I discuss molecular
pathway techniques, proteome scale maps and, chemogenomics which have all shown potential for
drug discovery in the future.
Cytoscape is a popular tool used in molecular visualization. There are hundreds of plugins that can
enhance its functionality. In the analysis I use UCSF Chimera (Chimera), StructureViz2 and RiNalyzer

Romanticism In Young Goodman Brown
Dependent Humans People tend to put their faith and hopes on other people, and they let them down,
hurt them emotionally. Emotions fluctuate and one cannot help but be upset or be enraged, this is what
the Romanticism Movement fueled itself on. Human emotion, nature, religion, and love are all factors
of Romanticism. Romantic characteristics can be found in literature and are expressed by people
throughout the Romantic Era from how they considered human potential and personality more
valuable than reason. When reading Young Goodman Brown by Nathaniel Hawthorne, someone can
identify and understand the ideas of Romanticism and the influence the idea had on American
literature from how they focus on a person s beliefs and inner struggles. This story relates to
Romanticism from how the story shows Goodman Brown s love and care for Faith, how evil is within
every human being, and how Goodman Brown loses his faith in all goodness of humanity when he
sees Faith turn over to the dark side at the Devil s ceremony. Love is shown in Hawthorne s story by
how Goodman Brown loves and cares about Faith. When the Devil is trying to persuade Goodman
Brown to follow him to the ceremony, Goodman Brown uses his love for Faith as a reason of why he
must not go. Goodman Brown tells the Devil that There is my wife, Faith. It would break her dear
little heart; and I d rather break my own (Hawthorne p.24). This was sadly not enough to keep him
from going to the ceremony, for he later teleports

Analysis Of Ellen Degeneres s The Puppy Episode
Ellen DeGeneres got almost destroyed after her coming out to the public during her career peak. In
1994, DeGeneres reached her height of popularity as an actress with her self titled television sitcom,
Ellen, which was originally titled These Friends of Mine. This ABC show was popular in its first few
seasons due to DeGeneres s style of observational humor.
Following DeGeneres came out as a lesbian on The Oprah Winfrey Show in February 1997, her
character in Ellen became the first lead in sitcom history to openly acknowledge her homosexuality on
air. The coming out episode, titled The Puppy Episode , was one of the highest rated episode of any
show on the network during that time ( Ellen DeGeneres Biography ).
However, the show faces stronger criticism and was forced to end. An ABC affiliate in Birmingham,
Alabama, refused to air the landmark episode. Fearing controversy, some of the show s sponsors,
Daimler Chrysler among them, withdrew advertisements ( Ellen DeGeneres Biography ). Even though
ABC made no comment other than to confirm the cancellation officially, It was believed that The Walt
Disney Company, ABC s parent owner, had become uncomfortable with the subject matter depicted
on the show now that DeGeneres character was openly gay (Carter). Despite a supportive audience, an
Emmy Award for the coming out episode and the show s groundbreaking place in television history,
Ellen was canceled in 1998.

Analysis Of Toussaint L Ouverture s 1802 Speech
etorical Analysis of Toussaint L Ouverture s 1802 Speech According to Blackpast.org, the Haitian
Revolution was the largest and most successful slave rebellion in the Western Hemisphere, which not
only ended slavery, but also French control over the colony in a 12 year span. Toussaint L Ouverture, a
Haitian leader, uses different tactics in order to addresses his men in a speech given before entering
battle. L Ouverture uses syntax, tone shifts, and imagery in order to convey to his troops the reason
why they are fighting and to motivate them.
In the beginning of the speech, L Ouverture uses syntax in order to arouse suspicion in his troops to
question why they have been treated the way they have. For example, in the speech it says, Why have
so many ships traversed the ocean, if not to throw you again into chains? (line1). L Ouverture uses this
parallelism all throughout the beginning of the speech by continuing this interrogative sentence
structure at the start of each sentence, by beginning each sentence with an interrogative word. L
Ouverture s use of interrogative parallel sentence structures allow him to emphasize the injustices that
have been brought upon his troops by the French. As a result, these questions arouse curiosity in his
troops, which L Ouverture then takes and ask if what they have endured for the last ten years was
worth it.
Also, in the beginning of the speech, L Ouverture uses a pattern of long then short sentences in order
to arouse

Although we are influence deeply by Chinese values through traditional family education and parents

Abstract
This research paper is going to focus mainly in the process followed by Officer Bird during a traffic
violation that led to the arrest of the suspect named Alejandro Quintana. The analysis of the two sides
of the coin, the officer and the suspect taken into custody is of main interest in this case. There are a
variety of steps to be followed prior to an arrest. The officer/investigator should be responsible for any
action taken towards an individual who is about to or being processed. In the particular case of
Alejandro Quintana, officer Bird executed the arrest of a suspect that clearly was suspicious utilizing

Bird could have not searched the trunk of Mr. Quintana s car even if she thought he was hiding

automobile, the officer may search the vehicle s passenger compartment as a contemporaneous
incident of arrest...The right to search includes any open or closed containers found in the passenger
compartment...It does not include the trunk (Swanson et, al. 2014), p.30). The arrest of Mr. Quintana
gives the officer the right to search the passenger s side but not the car s trunk. Officer Bird couldn t
be able to legally search Mr. Quintana s car trunk without and issued search warrant on the motor
vehicle s trunk. According to (Decker, 1999), The purpose of a warrant is to allow a neutral judicial
officer to assess whether the police have probable cause to make an arrest or conduct a search

giving the judge issuing the warrant the decision making process of whether or not permitting the

The Heated Debate Concerning Stem Cell Research Essay
INTRODUCTION
Ethical issues are those issues which at a personal, community or global level challenge the reader to
make decisions of what is right or good behavior. Morality however refers to codes that are held about
what is right and good behavior (Engebreston, 2006). In today s world medical research and
technology is rapidly changing and there are increasing ethical conflicts between science and religion
particularly with the recent harvest and research of embryonic stem cells. The use of embryonic stem
cells has been described by Chris McDonald, stem cell research centre, 2008 as one of the most
significant breakthroughs of this century in biomedicine. The focus question within this research

The most well accepted definition of stem cells however is that they are cells that can differentiate into
many other different cells. Stem cells are responsible for renewing other cells and tissues within the
human body. (National Health and Medical Research Council, 2010). Individual opinions on this issue
are characterized by, religious, legal and medical values and belief. These form the basis of the debate
as to whether or not it is humane and ethical to destroy even one embryo for the advance of the
sciences and the benefit of millions. However there is an alternative method of stem cell research
which makes use of adult stem cells that are found throughout the body, including in bone marrow and
hair follicles. Robert Hoffman, of the American medical research company AntiCancer Inc, and
colleagues at the University of California San Diego and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
said it might someday be possible to take a person s own stem cells from hair follicles and grow a
tissue transplant. However, embryonic stem cells are still widely regarded by medical professionals as
unparalleled in their potential, as they are easier to identify, isolate and harvest, there are more of them
and they also grow more quickly and easily in labs.

Before the commencement of this research task the researcher had little personal experience on the
topic of stem cell research however after viewing

1 minimizes holding cost Storing inventory is an expensive process for any business . The main
advantage of this model is that it helps in decreasing the storage or holding cost of goods by getting at

2 minimizes ordering cost the aim of any firm is to minimize costs and the ordering costs are no

Martha Graham is one of the most highly renowned and influential artist and chorographer in Modern
dance of all time. Graham has influenced Modern dance, taking styles of her own and being able to
express a variety of themes with human emotion. Graham s work strongly reflected her; she is also
well known for her other choreographies such as: Appalachian Spring, Lamentation, and Night
Journey, and many more.

Target Leggings
Everyone wears black leggings these days whether they should or they shouldn t. The first leggings
became popular in the 1960 s worn by women (used as leg warmers or tights) and later evolved to
become common streetwear starting in 2010. Later they became part of everyday casual and athletic
wear. Since then, multiple brands and companies have adopted this trend and modified it to multiple
colors and styles. The most popular of these is black leggings. The quality and required maintenance
for Target black leggings makes them irritating to wear. The function and style of these leggings have
many pros and cons. The high waist of the leggings keeps them from falling down and makes it easy
to exercise. The leggings go with most outfits and are ideal for relaxing, casual wear and ... Show

The most popular pairs are usually on the lower price range. The leggings are very affordable! Some
users might argue that the money isn t worth it. The quality of the leggings just can t compare to the
price. Compared to Nike Leggings Target is failing in this department. Nike leggings have more
coverage (aren t sheer) and better lasting quality. They re made of spandex like material which makes
them easier to maintain and clean. They are also more suited for exercising and last a long time. The
only aspect that Target leggings are better than Nike leggings is the price difference. Target leggings
are much more affordable compared to Nike leggings which can range anywhere from $40 $100.

The Almost Catastrophic Business that Was Euro Disney
In 1992, Euro Disney opened a new location twenty miles east of Paris. Due to many different
conditions, which nearly lead to failure, Michael Eisner personally structured a package to reorganize
the park in 1994. Although Disney is a label known around the world, Euro Disney was nearly a
enormous catastrophe. How something like this could happen is fascinating. There are many
explanations for Disney s near terminal presentation, both predictable and unexpected. Regrettably,
Euro Disney did not take cultural differences and reference criteria into account when creating their
park, resulting in their initial less than stellar performance. Disney might even have been able to make
better decisions if the advisors of this project were able to remove themselves and their values from
the decision making in the infrastructure of Euro Disney. Assumptions that Disney made were that
Monday would be a light day of visitors and Friday a heavy one, they would not be interested in
breakfast, that the Europeans would want croissants and coffee, and that reducing the prices of the
hotel room would increase the number of visitors the park would have. Their problem was that only
that last assumption was actually correct. In reality, Monday was a heavy day for visitors and Friday
was a light one, everyone showed up for breakfast, and at this breakfast the Europeans wanted bacon
and eggs. They were right, however, about lowering the hotel room prices. This price change

Persistence Of Memory Edge Of The Trees Analysis
Persistence of Memory [See Appendix 4] and Edge of the Trees [See Appendix 1] are two examples of
artworks that both aim to communicate a social comment that is relevant to the artist s background and
beliefs. Persistence of Memory was painted by Salvador Dali who was a Spanish artist, celebrated for
his surrealistic dreamscapes. Since his birth in 1904, Dali was an eccentric individual with limitless
creativity. His fiercely technical yet highly unusual paintings, sculptures, films and life size interactive
art pieces were achieved by pouring his boldness and creativity in to each one. Edge of the Trees was
collaboratively created by Janet Laurence and Fiona Foley; two Australian artists of completely
different backgrounds. Janet Laurence (1947) is a Sydney based artist and architect of more than 25
years. Fiona Foley (1964) is another contemporary Australian painter, printmaker, photographer,
sculptor, installation artist, writer and community activist, whose work is greatly influenced by her
heritage and history. Foley s work often discusses the hidden histories of Australia s colonial past and
its interface with Aboriginal people. Edge of the Trees (1995) ... Show more content on

The essay entails the first encounter of Aboriginals and the European settlers, ... the discoverers

before and after 1788. It makes viewers question the integrity of Australia s past and future,
encouraging them to ask themselves whether humanity has learnt from our mistakes and how much
our society has actually changed. Fiona Foley and Janet Laurence have together created a timeless
social comment that confronts the viewers with their own history, thus further establishing the truth of

The Rise Of The Gunpowder Empires
The rise of the west was a time in which European nations became more advanced and had an increase
of power and dominance. Europe became a dominant nation in the 16th Century while two large
Gunpowder empires began to decline. These European nations dominated because they had
technological advancements. Some of which were gunpowder, cannons, and much more. Both the
Ottoman and the Ming Empires rose to the top and then declined after the European nations began to
advance. The European Miracle was when the European nations began to advance in technology, they
expanded, and dominated the world. China was a very advanced civilization during the 16th Century
and rose to power. They had large libraries, conducted trade by using a series of canals. They also had
large cities and used paper money for trade. The Chinese invented the gunpowder and the magnetic
compass. They had a very large navy with over 2,000 vessels in all sizes and they conducted overseas
expeditions. After the last Chinese expedition, there was an imperial edict that banned the construction
of ships with more than two masts. Warships were put away and not maintained. The navy was too
costly and the Chinese wanted to spend their money defending their Northern frontiers from the
Mongols. This did not require a large navy. Paul Kennedy stated that in this Restoration atmosphere,
the all important officialdom was concerned to preserve and recapture the past, not to create a brighter

The Ecnomics of Medicare Essay
The Economics
Of Medicare
II. Introduction
Clearly, the Medicaid program is ripe for a major overhaul, a task that the federal government has thus
far been unwilling to undertake. I chose this topic because I believe that the Medicaid program can be
rescued and revitalized by leadership; otherwise, it is likely to be eroded. Medicaid is a government
sponsored program whose objective is to provide patients with health assistance upon meeting specific
criteria. Medicaid is an insurance program that is available for disadvantaged persons, including the
elderly, who cannot afford health benefits because of low incomes or other factors. This program is
subsidized by government funds and in many instances, will cover the costs of basic ... Show more

There is a widespread belief that drug company s overcharge for their medicines in order to increase
profits. Many middle class and poorer families do not have health insurance because it s too costly for
them. It s a risk not to have it though, because if a person gets sick or injured, the cost of a hospital
stay is thousands per day. One group that is most affected of the high cost of health care and medicines
are senior citizens. It s gotten to the point for many of them that they must choose between buying
medicine or food, because they only have enough money for one of them. The government needs to
pass legislation and to work closely with the health insurance and drug companies to develop a
healthcare plan that successfully addresses the needs of all Americans. This must include programs
that enable the poor and elderly to receive the necessary care needed to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
The flaws in health care are a major priority that the government needs to reform now. Although the
government has already begun to change some of the major problems, there is a lot of work that still
needs to be done. Throughout history, both the American citizen and the American government have
often reacted to problems, crises, and social injustices by instituting reform through new laws and
practices. If America has done this before, why shouldn t we be able to do it again?

Napoleon Crossing The Alps By Jacques-Louis David
Arguably the most successful portrait of the military powerhouse, Napoleon Crossing the Alps by
Jacques Louis David is nothing short of political propaganda. Completed in January of 1801, this oil
on canvas painting depicts Napoleon as he leads his troops across the Alps in May of 1800, which lead
to the defeat of the Austrians at the Battle of Marengo in June of the same year. The portrait,
commissioned by the King of Spain, was to hang in the Royal Palace along with paintings of other
military leaders. It is an equestrian portrait of the future Emperor of France. Though the painting
depicts Napoleon leading his troops through the alps, he actually followed his troops a few days later.
Nonetheless, the painting captures Napoleon s great achievement

  • 2. Automatist Utopian Themes In Acharnians and Birds During the 5th century BCE, Old Comedy was the most prevalent comedic form in Ancient Greece. This was largely due to the success of Athenian playwright, Aristophanes. His plays were frenetic, visual and personal, often containing historical figures. In particular, Aristophanes comedies contained automatist utopian themes that were used to satirize various aspects of 5th century Greece, often in Athens. The present essay will first define utopia and the automatist subtype. Then it will explore Aristophanes usage of automatist utopian themes in his plays Acharnians and Peace. Specifically, this paper will argue that Aristophanes used themes associated with automatist utopia to satirize war, the excess of the aristocracy, and the ignorance of the lower classes in 5th century Greece. Before analyzing specific passages from Aristophanic comedy, it is essential to understand the definition of utopia. The word, utopia was invented by author Thomas More in his 1516 book of the same name. More derived the word from the Greek, ou topos and eu topos [which together make]...a place which does not exist, that is not here, but which is also good (Ruffell 474). This definition is interesting given that many of Aristophanes plays take place in 5th century Athens. It suggests that Aristophanes was creating an Athenian world that was better but not based in reality. This essay will focus predominantly on Aristophanes usage of automatist utopian tropes. The principal component of an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Theme Of Wait And Hope In The Count Of Monte Cristo The Count of Monte Cristo, written by Alexandre Dumas, is an adventure novel published in 1844 in France which gained worldwide popularity for its universal themes. Dumas incorporated themes of moral justice, ultimate happiness, and hope. These themes are apparent throughout this novel, where the main character Edmond Dantes, or The Count of Monte Cristo, takes justice into his own hands, and plays God to get his vengeance on those who have wronged him. In the following essay I will analyze the true meaning of wait and hope found in this novel. Edmond Dantes had an extremely successful young life, he was engaged, he was about to be captain of a ship, and he was quite popular all before the age of 20. Unfortunately, who he thought were his friends were envious of all his success. Fernand Mondego was in love with his fiance Mercedes, his cohort Danglars wanted to have the success that he had for himself, and Caderousse was jealous of him as well. Together, the trio destroyed his life by putting him in prison to steal everything good away from him. Danglars created the plot to frame Dantès for treason, Fernand mailed the letter they constructed, and Villefort sent the Count to jail only to protect his own father and himself. Dantes spent fourteen years in prison, but in this time he grew up and discovered his true values with the help of his greatest mentor and jail neighbor Abbe Faria. He became a teacher to him during their several years as prisoners, and he taught ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Gender Inequality In Boys And Girls By Alice Munro In Alice Munro s Boys and Girls inequality is a proven action throughout the story. Gender roles and stereotypes is what occur when the role or behavior is taught to a person as appropriate to their gender. Alice Munro shows us in the story that in a second someone can change based off of what someone else thinks they should be and do. For example in the short story it shows us that women should be in the kitchen and men should be outside working in the fields and providing for his family. When reading a poem entitled Gender Inequality by Ella Linero, it tells us that men and women are put into a system where gender inequality is being ruled in the world. That men and women had to act a certain way and that women should be feminine while on the other hand men should only be masculine. The time in which the short story Boys and Girls took place was a time when men and women were not equal. Mothers had traditional roles, which often left them working in the house while men also had their roles outside of the house. The male was the dominate figure while the woman had to be subservient. You didn t see women outside unless they had to go outside and does something for example, hang the clothes on wires and so on. Gender Inequality took a toll on women in the early 1950 s. In the short story Boys and Girls the main character is a young girl who struggles within herself and also has external struggles as her father tries to change who she is and force her into a gender role that he thinks is important. Munro does not give the girl a name and by doing this the protagonist is seen as someone who has no identity and no power. This little girl in the story helps her father in their fox breading farm which she enjoyed so much. Sadly that all changed for her as she got older and her help wasn t needed. The narrator had problems coming in to terms with the role she was to lead. She wanted to work outside with her father doing the work that she only knew to do and this work was so important to her. But sadly the narrators mother tried to her in to work inside the house which I would say to wing her off of what she enjoyed so much in the fox farm. The narrator didn t like being in the house doing what her mother was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Effects Of Globalization On Contemporary And... Globalization is the interaction among people, companies and governments of different nations. It is a process that is driven by international trade and investment but, is also supported by information technology (What is Globalization?). Large corporations have taken advantage of foreign markets by building factories in less developed countries and through using established marketing arrangements with foreign partners. A defining feature of globalization, therefore, is an international, industrial and financial business structure (What is Globalization?). In this essay, I am going to consider the effects of globalization on contemporary, developing and indigenous cultures. This will include looking at both the negative effects as well as the benefits of globalization on the world as a whole. Globalization is profoundly controversial. Some people argue that this international change allows poor countries and their citizens to develop economically and raise their standards of living. Others claim that the creation of an international free market has only benefited multinational corporations in the Western world at the expense of local enterprise and cultures and by the exploitation of less developed countries (What is Globalization?). Firstly, Globalization has had a large effect on contemporary culture. For example, technological development is as a big part of globalization and has transformed many cultures from subsidence farming to commercial farming, raising cash from ... How Does Shakespeare Show Loyalty In Othello Reconsidering Loyalty and Honesty in Shakespeare s Othello Othello is full of betrayals and broken bonds from almost all of the relationships that Shakespeare s characters form in the play. Loyalty and honesty, or the lack thereof, are both essential parts of the friendships and meaningful bonds in the play. Society perceives loyalty as the faithfulness in those in relationships and those that have created a certain bond, and honesty as sincere without deceit or untruthfulness. This paper focuses on Othello, arguing that the traditional ideas of loyalty, with an emphasis on honesty, in relationships should be rethought through the many characters interactions and motives. By examining how traditional definitions of loyalty and honesty in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Othello married Desdemona out of his love for her, but eventually kills her because he no longer believes that she is loyal, while Emilia, Desdemona s attendant and Iago s wife, tries to convince him otherwise and calls Iago a betrayer. Shakespeare does not waste any time developing the manipulative character of Iago, as his Machiavellian actions are introduced in the first scene of Othello. Iago is a soldier in the Venetian army, who wanted the position of the lieutenant. When Othello, the Venetian army general, appoints Cassio to this position instead of Iago, he begins to portray a revengeful character with problematic actions. When Iago states, I am not what I am (1.1.64), this is the first notion that the audience and the characters will not know who he is because his thoughts and his actions are different. He says this to prove that Othello truly does not know who he is and that he may seem good on the outside, but it bad on the inside. In his article, I am not what I am Destructive Emotions in an Organizational Hierarchy: The Case of Othello and Iago, Chris Poulson argues that Iago is Shakespeare s most complex and powerful character as we see him plotting revenge and his hatred for Othello in the first scene, which sets the tone for what is to come in the tragedy. Molecular visualization is one of the most important parts of structural biology and the drug discovery process. Molecular visualization with high throughput screening (HTS) has been successful in the discovery of new drugs. Though HTS has been effective it is expensive and covers a limited space. For these reasons, the high level visualization of molecules provides help to cut the work performed in HTS. Together, they offer one of the most effective methods in structure based drug discovery. On the whole, my aim is to simulate molecules to find hidden protein ligand binding sites for the discovery of new drugs. I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This analysis follows a shift in genomics from identifying molecules to analyzing interactions in the molecular network [12]. The effectiveness of each application is found by comparing several features offered. Features compared include cost, availability, extensibility, difficulty, command line access, scripting, selection and documentation [14], [15]. By comparing these categories, I decide the most effective tool to use in structure based drug discovery. In a classic approach to drug, discovery testing would begin in vivo. This would need the analysis of millions of molecules. The molecular visualization of protein ligand interaction analysis tools can cut the number of molecules that need screening by calculating their potential docking scores. I can narrow the scope down to only those that are most likely to show strong performance. The first tool I look at is Cytoscape [7]. A standalone application that has historically been successful in drug discovery. In addition, I discuss molecular pathway techniques, proteome scale maps and, chemogenomics which have all shown potential for drug discovery in the future. • 12. Romanticism In Young Goodman Brown Dependent Humans People tend to put their faith and hopes on other people, and they let them down, hurt them emotionally. Emotions fluctuate and one cannot help but be upset or be enraged, this is what the Romanticism Movement fueled itself on. Human emotion, nature, religion, and love are all factors of Romanticism. Romantic characteristics can be found in literature and are expressed by people throughout the Romantic Era from how they considered human potential and personality more valuable than reason. When reading Young Goodman Brown by Nathaniel Hawthorne, someone can identify and understand the ideas of Romanticism and the influence the idea had on American literature from how they focus on a person s beliefs and inner struggles. This story relates to Romanticism from how the story shows Goodman Brown s love and care for Faith, how evil is within every human being, and how Goodman Brown loses his faith in all goodness of humanity when he sees Faith turn over to the dark side at the Devil s ceremony. Love is shown in Hawthorne s story by how Goodman Brown loves and cares about Faith. When the Devil is trying to persuade Goodman Brown to follow him to the ceremony, Goodman Brown uses his love for Faith as a reason of why he must not go. Goodman Brown tells the Devil that There is my wife, Faith. It would break her dear little heart; and I d rather break my own (Hawthorne p.24). In 1994, DeGeneres reached her height of popularity as an actress with her self titled television sitcom, Ellen, which was originally titled These Friends of Mine. This ABC show was popular in its first few seasons due to DeGeneres s style of observational humor. Following DeGeneres came out as a lesbian on The Oprah Winfrey Show in February 1997, her character in Ellen became the first lead in sitcom history to openly acknowledge her homosexuality on air. The coming out episode, titled The Puppy Episode , was one of the highest rated episode of any show on the network during that time ( Ellen DeGeneres Biography ). However, the show faces stronger criticism and was forced to end. An ABC affiliate in Birmingham, Alabama, refused to air the landmark episode. Fearing controversy, some of the show s sponsors, Daimler Chrysler among them, withdrew advertisements ( Ellen DeGeneres Biography ). Even though ABC made no comment other than to confirm the cancellation officially, It was believed that The Walt Disney Company, ABC s parent owner, had become uncomfortable with the subject matter depicted on the show now that DeGeneres character was openly gay (Carter). • 14. Analysis Of Toussaint L Ouverture s 1802 Speech etorical Analysis of Toussaint L Ouverture s 1802 Speech According to Blackpast.org, the Haitian Revolution was the largest and most successful slave rebellion in the Western Hemisphere, which not only ended slavery, but also French control over the colony in a 12 year span. Toussaint L Ouverture, a Haitian leader, uses different tactics in order to addresses his men in a speech given before entering battle. L Ouverture uses syntax, tone shifts, and imagery in order to convey to his troops the reason why they are fighting and to motivate them. In the beginning of the speech, L Ouverture uses syntax in order to arouse suspicion in his troops to question why they have been treated the way they have. For example, in the speech it says, Why have so many ships traversed the ocean, if not to throw you again into chains? (line1). L Ouverture uses this parallelism all throughout the beginning of the speech by continuing this interrogative sentence structure at the start of each sentence, by beginning each sentence with an interrogative word. L Ouverture s use of interrogative parallel sentence structures allow him to emphasize the injustices that have been brought upon his troops by the French. As a result, these questions arouse curiosity in his troops, which L Ouverture then takes and ask if what they have endured for the last ten years was worth it. The analysis of the two sides of the coin, the officer and the suspect taken into custody is of main interest in this case. There are a variety of steps to be followed prior to an arrest. The officer/investigator should be responsible for any action taken towards an individual who is about to or being processed. The Heated Debate Concerning Stem Cell Research Essay INTRODUCTION Ethical issues are those issues which at a personal, community or global level challenge the reader to make decisions of what is right or good behavior. Morality however refers to codes that are held about what is right and good behavior (Engebreston, 2006). In today s world medical research and technology is rapidly changing and there are increasing ethical conflicts between science and religion particularly with the recent harvest and research of embryonic stem cells. The most well accepted definition of stem cells however is that they are cells that can differentiate into many other different cells. Stem cells are responsible for renewing other cells and tissues within the human body. (National Health and Medical Research Council, 2010). Individual opinions on this issue are characterized by, religious, legal and medical values and belief. These form the basis of the debate as to whether or not it is humane and ethical to destroy even one embryo for the advance of the sciences and the benefit of millions. However there is an alternative method of stem cell research which makes use of adult stem cells that are found throughout the body, including in bone marrow and hair follicles. Robert Hoffman, of the American medical research company AntiCancer Inc, and colleagues at the University of California San Diego and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology said it might someday be possible to take a person s own stem cells from hair follicles and grow a tissue transplant. Due to many different conditions, which nearly lead to failure, Michael Eisner personally structured a package to reorganize the park in 1994. Although Disney is a label known around the world, Euro Disney was nearly a enormous catastrophe. How something like this could happen is fascinating. There are many explanations for Disney s near terminal presentation, both predictable and unexpected. Regrettably, Euro Disney did not take cultural differences and reference criteria into account when creating their park, resulting in their initial less than stellar performance. Disney might even have been able to make better decisions if the advisors of this project were able to remove themselves and their values from the decision making in the infrastructure of Euro Disney. Assumptions that Disney made were that Monday would be a light day of visitors and Friday a heavy one, they would not be interested in breakfast, that the Europeans would want croissants and coffee, and that reducing the prices of the hotel room would increase the number of visitors the park would have. Their problem was that only that last assumption was actually correct. In reality, Monday was a heavy day for visitors and Friday was a light one, everyone showed up for breakfast, and at this breakfast the Europeans wanted bacon and eggs. They were right, however, about lowering the hotel room prices. This price change increased ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
