Bill Nichols and the Discourse of Sobriety
Do mockumentary films retain any trace of the discourse of sobriety ? Throughout film history,
documentary and fiction films have denoted the polar opposites of film form with each representing
two distinct and separate traditions, the cinema of reality and the cinema of fiction (Doherty 16).
However what was once a clear distinction has become blurred as the increasing popularity of
mockumentary continues to weaken the assumed boundaries between fact and fiction (Sicinski). Prior
to this blurring of the lines the documentary genre enjoyed a privileged position amongst screen forms
due its the truth claim (Glick). Reflecting Bill Nichols observation that documentary employs the
discourse of sobriety (3), the truth claim is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Despite multiple documentary conventions being incorporated throughout the film, 24 hour Party
People retains little trace of sobriety as Winterbottom s use of interviews, direct address, archival
footage and narration aims to portray a predominantly fictional world as an actual real world, rather
than depicting the world as it is. Although real archival footage of Joy Division performing at Wilson s
club, as well as actual footage of Wilson s television show Granada Tonight is used throughout the
film, Winterbottom ensures that such footage is subtly interwoven within sequences of fictional events
thus eliminating any trace of sobriety that the use of real footage may have allowed for. Furthermore it
can be argued that 24 hour Party People retains little evidence of Bill Nichols observation that
documentary employs the discourse of sobriety , as a number of incidents are exaggerated throughout
the film. For example, following a scene in which Wilson s wife is shown getting close with musician
Howard Devoto, the cleaner present in the scene faces the camera, reveals himself as the real Howard
Devoto and states that he has no recollection of

Male love in The Things They Carried
The Things They Carried by Tim O Brien is a fictional book consisting of different stories from
Vietnam war. Tim O Brien was trying to convey the real perspectives of the war to his readers by
telling facts and stories through his personal memories he got from the war, and how things effect
them and their life after the war. In order to express the tension in the war, O Brien depicts the
experience of the soldiers by showing the different ways of expression of male love from these
soldiers. Although there are many forms of friendship, some of which may vary from place to place,
the friendship in the war is the most unique one. As the definition of Friendship, Friendship is a
stronger form of interpersonal bond than an association. The bond between soldiers is more intense
and real, and this is also the message that Tim O Brien shows in his book by using metaphor, details
depicting and technique of repetition.
Tim O Brien uses metaphor of photos to express the life before, tie all soldiers together, and thus show
the friendship of them. The Thing They Carried is not only describing the life in the Vietnam war, but
is more about the things that they carried, and the emotions and stories behind these things. All
soldiers bring some small items, like comic books and hunting hatchets, which contain their memory
from the past, to the war. My girl. What about her? The picture, it was

The Influence Of Algebra
Abstract
Modern Times has brought a wide range of systems and methods of mathematics. The beginning of
mathematics had focused on geometry and forms of mathematics, but then during the 16th and 17th
century, algebra started to be known and practiced. Mathematics begin to get more diverse in early
modern times. Throughout the history of algebra, many mathematicians were very focused on finding
solutions to problems and different methods to carry out mathematics. In early 19th century practices
makes mathematics was based on physical variables. People were concerned with abstract algebra
with situations involving applied mathematics or physics that had expanded to include abstract
algebra. These methods and techniques were able to influence what people do today in different areas
of life. Without algebra solving complicated equations would not be possible, or it would be more
complicated than what it is today. Algebra is a main part in what our world is today and without its ...

Nice To Eat With You Chapter 1 Summary
Ryan Klemann
AP Literature and Composition
Mrs. Mills Chapter 5 Nice to Eat with You: Acts of Communion: As Kumalo arrives in Johannesburg,
he dines with Msimangu and other priests, which include blacks and whites. The priests at the mission
sit together forgetting about color, signifying that the two races can be together in agreement, and they
welcome Kumalo s story with interest. Kumalo talks about his village and describes how people will
leave Ixopo and create a sense of brokenness in the tribe, which are all falling to ruin. One priest
wished to hear more, but got up and left to attend other affairs, symbolizing an end of a relationship.
At this meal, news of a Johannesburg couple that had been beaten and robbed by a couple of natives
was discussed. This meal of the priests is not only an act of communion, but it represents a bond
created by two different races, which is the main issue of this novel. ... Show more content on

Like Christ, Arthur teaches to love each race and be considerate towards whites and blacks. As Arthur
Jarvis died in chapter eleven, he brought optimism and change to the people, similar to Jesus Christ
bringing redemption and spiritual growth of many people. Due to his teachings being rejected by
many people of South Africa, he was killed. As Arthur Jarvis was killed, there were pictures of
crucified Christ and Abraham Lincoln, both people who fought for what they believed in, human
compassion, and were killed for their beliefs. Through Arthur Jarvis, the reader sees sacrifice through
his actions, which relate him to Jesus Christ, the greatest sacrifice we know of. (Foster,

Consequences Of Rules In Candade By Dudley Randall s Candide
Rules are challenged all the time for many reasons. Rules should only be challenged at an appropriate
time like maybe when you don t agree with the rules and your against it. Sometimes challenging rules
can have good consequences and bad consequences. In the poem The Ballad of Birmingham written
by Dudley Randall and the story Candide written by Voltaire both have rules, but in one story the rules
were followed and the other rules were broken.
In the poem The Ballad of Birmingham A girls wants to go to a march but she is not allowed, instead
she is told to go to church she follows the rulers and she gets killed, says in the poem on lines 31 and
32 ¨O, here s the shoe my baby wore, But, baby, where are you. In the story Candide a boy does not
follow rules in a castle and gets kicked out of the castle states in the story on paragraph 8 ¨Baron
Thunder ten Tronckh passed near the screen and beholding this cause and effect caused Candide from
the castle with great kicks on the backside.¨
In the Poem ¨The Ballad of Birmingham¨ the rules were not to go to the march, But the rules were
changed, she thought thinks it s going to be dangerous No baby no you may not go for the dogs are
fierce and wild and clubs and hoses guns and jails aren t good for a little child. The character Baby
was told to go to the church instead of the march, states on lines 13 16 No, Baby, no, you may not go,
for i fear those guns will fire. But you may go to church instead and sing in the children s choir. Baby
followed her mother s orders. She has combed and brushed her night dark hair and bathed rose petal
sweet and drawn white gloves on her small brown hands and white shoes on her feet Baby was now
ready to go to church. The consequences she got for following the rules of going to church instead of
going to the march is that she was killed by an explosive says on lines 25 28 For when she heard the
explosion her eyes grew wet and wild she raced through the streets of Birmingham calling for her
child O, here s the shoe my baby wore, But, baby, where are you. The author s message is that maybe
if you challenge the rules sometimes good consequences could happen, so it might be appropriate to

Biomechanics Of The Tympanic Membrane

BIOE 154: Introduction to Biomechanics
Professor Norman
Biomechanics of the Tympanic Membrane
Background: Over the past years, bioengineers have applied different methods for modelling the
human ear. The human ear is an intricate biomechanical system with its primary function to sound
perception and reception. The ear is divided into 3 main components, each with its own unique
functions: the outer ear (pinna), the middle ear, and the inner ear. The outer ear, or the pinna, consists
of the auricle, the skin covered cartilage of the ear visible on the outside of the head, as well as the
opening to the auditory canal. The middle ear refers the air filled hollow space (tympanic cavity)
behind the eardrum or tympanic membrane. The tympanic membrane is a thin, cone shaped membrane
that separates the outer ear from the middle ear (Figure 1a). The tympanic membrane is made up of
two main parts: the fragile pars flaccida (upper region) and robust the pars tersa (lower region). The
pars tersa, composed of three layers: skin, fibrous tissue, and mucus, makes up the majority of the
tympanic membrane. The pars flaccida is often associated with eustachian tube malfunctions and
choleostomas, whereas the pars tersa is associated with perforations. There are 3 bones, the malleus,
incus, and stapes, in the middle ear (Figure 1b) that vibrate when exposed to the vibrations of the
sound waves. The malleus is attached to the medial surface of the tympanic

America s Impact On The Planet Essay
As a species that continues to evolve and expand on this planet, humans have made many lasting
impacts to their home. Some of these changes often go generally unnoticed, such as the shift in
popular music, or fashion trends. Even transitions from job to job, or relocating to a new city seem to
weigh lightly on the general public. However, unbeknownst to us, we as a species have a far greater
impact on this planet than we would like to admit. Throughout our day to day lives we tend to
unknowingly impact and mold or future. It can be something as simple as forgetting to recycle that jug
of milk, or neglecting to clean up a spill after a self done oil change. Even the foods we eat and the
way we manufacture them have a lasting effect on the planet. Perhaps one of the more noticeable ways
we as a society affect the Earth though is how we build upon it. With much of the global population
centralized in urban areas, and there continued growth. It is interesting to observe the way in which
this urbanized land reacts to human interference. One of the more interesting aspects of urbanization is
the use and management of water. With the continued expansion of cities, and the modification of the
land in which these concrete jungles cover, changes to land are inevitable. In his book Urban Storm
Water Management, Hormoz Pazwash briefly summarizes some of the impacts urbanization has to
land, and water quality stating. Urban development alters the natural process of storm water runoff.

Montag s Influences in Farenheit 451 Essay
In the novel, FAHRENHEIT 451 by Ray Bradbury, Guy Montag lives in an inverted society, where
firemen make fires instead of put them out, and pedestrians are used as bowling pins for cars that are
excessively speeding. The people on this society are hypnotized by giant wall size televisions and
seashell radios that are attached to everyone s ears. People in Montag s society do not think for
themselves or even generate their own opinions; everything is given to them by the television stations
they watch. In this society, if someone is in possession of a book, their books are burned by the
firemen, but not only their books, but their entire home. Montag begins realizing that the things in this
society are not right. Montag is influenced and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The psychiatrist wants to know why I go out and hike around in the forests and watch the birds and
collect butterflies (Bradbury, 23). This quotation shows that Clarisse is considered different in this
society, and she must see a psychiatrist because she admires nature. Clarisse influences Montag by
admiring nature, because Montag is now starting to realize the beauty of nature, and beginning to
develop his own opinion. Clarisse strongly influenced Montag after her death. We cannot tell the
precise moment when friendship is formed. As in filling a vessel drop by drop, that is a last drop
which makes it run over; so in a series of kindness there is at last one which makes the heart run over
(Bradbury, 71) This quotation shows that Montag is starting to have feelings unlike the rest of society.
Clarisse has come to influence Montag through her questions, her admiration of nature and her death.
Clarisse influenced Montag enough to get him to begin having feelings. Although Clarisse influenced
Montag to begin feeling emotions, the fire on Elm Street was a big influence for Montag. Secondly,
the fire at 11 Elm Street greatly influenced Montag. The fire showed Montag how important books
are. The fire also makes Montag curious about why books would be so important that the lady would
die for them. The fire on Elm Street influenced Montag by the lady dying for her books, Montag
stealing the books and his fellow firemen not feeling any remorse. When the lady

Incorporation Theory
Incorporating a Theory that Supports the Proposed Solution
A theory is a set of ideas or principles that serve as a guidance to practice. Also, theories can be used
to implement change in the nursing practice. In this paper, the author will describe one theory and
discuss how that theory works to support the proposed solution on how to increase influenza
vaccination among healthcare workers. Then, she will explain how she will incorporate the theory into
her project.
Description of Theory
A nursing theory that supports the proposed solution selected is the health belief model (HBM). The
aim of this model is to address problem behaviors that arouse health concerns, such as risks of
nosocomial influenza like illness (NILI) due to unvaccinated healthcare workers (HCWs). Also, it is a
common model utilized in nursing, particularly in problems focusing on patient compliance and
preventive health care practices. The author chose this model because she believes healthcare workers

Using the six major concepts of the HBM will aid healthcare workers to make the decision to get

perceived severity, which helps HCWs to understand the danger of not getting the vaccine. The third
concept is the perceived benefit, which aids HCWs to know the benefit of getting vaccinated. The
fourth concept is the perceived costs, which refers HCWs how costly an outbreak of NILI can be. The
fifth concept is the motivation, which is what drives HCWs to believe that they should get the vaccine.
The last concept is modifying factors, which includes the patient satisfaction as a result of increasing

The Rule Of St. Benedict And Beowulf
The Rule of St. Benedict and Beowulf both provide images of an ideal ruler and an ideal subject. For
the Rule of St. Benedict, they are the good abbot and the proper monk. In Beowulf, the good warrior
king and the loyal members of his warrior band. These images of the ruler and subject of each book
are very similar and different as well as show the bad view of rulers and subjects and the books show
the value systems of those writing the texts. These pieces of literature, how different they may seem,
are relatively alike. First and foremost, they are alike in the ways of how they present their ruler. In
Beowulf, King Hrothgar is wise as he gives his sermon to Beowulf.
At last his part of pride within him waxes and climbs, the watchman of the soul slumbering the while.
That sleep is too deep, tangled in its cares! Too close is the slayer who shoots the wicked shaft from
his bow! For all his armour he is unable to protect himself: the insidious bolt buries in his chest, the
crooked counsels of the accursed one (63)
Which warns of the dangers of pride and fame which is something that an abbot was supposed to say
towards a monk. Another way their rulers are somewhat similar is that they are both known to be
father figures. Abbots are supposed to be devoted and tender as only a father can be, as they say in The
Rule of St. Benedict which is much like Beowulf as King Hrothgar gives him fatherly advice. They
are also similar on how they present their subjects. Both books

The Pros And Cons Of Zygomatic Dental Implants
Dr. Irfan Atcha is offering an innovative procedure one that does not involve bone transplants to end
the struggles of chronic denture patients. The procedure, which utilizes Zygomatic dental implants,
will provide new teeth to patients who could not wear implant supported teeth on their upper jaw due
to the lack of supportive bone. According to Dr. Atcha, these new alternatives allow him to fabricate
either a removable or fixed implant supported set of teeth.
Treating the completely edentulous upper jaw with fixed implant supported teeth has always been
difficult, especially if it is suffering from moderate to severe bone loss. One procedure that has long
been available is the use of bone transplant or bone grafting, usually from the patient s skull, hip, jaw
or skin, to supply the missing bone in the upper jaw. Because this requires a second ... Show more

According to Dr. Atcha, many patients who suffer from the loss of teeth have to struggle with wearing
removable denture prosthesis, which sometimes causes difficulty with speech and chewing. Unlike
removable denture prosthesis, however, Zygomatic dental implants appear and function like the
patient s prior dentition.
Aside from the shorter duration of the treatment, the Zygomatic implant technique also has a success
rate of 97% after five years, according to scientific studies. Dr. Atcha recommends this procedure to
patients, especially those who are dissatisfied with their upper removable denture, since this will give
them the opportunity to experience the biomechanics of their natural teeth again. Additionally, it will
provide them with a proper biting force for chewing.

What Role Did Futball Play In History
Futball, which is commonly called and known as soccer, is a sport that is played between two teams;
each containing eleven players with a spherical ball. The main objective of the sport s players is to
make a goal by using any part of their body, excluding their arms. As we learned in class, like many
sports nowadays, soccer went through many changes ever since the earliest form of soccer was played.
While the game was only popular in a handful of countries back in its earliest years, soccer spread all
over the world and built a very large audience and fan base. In fact, soccer has ultimately become the
most popular sport in history.
Early evidence shows that soccer being played first started in China during the 2nd and 3rd centuries

that many countries see a significant amount of advertising that is being invested into the sport.
Additionally, many countries lack any other national sport to represent them and see soccer as an
investment, which is especially the case if their country s professional team does well in

When I signed up for French, I naturally but incorrectly assumed that I would learn about all things
French. But my second language study started as many high school students did: it was the mid 80 s
and my high school teacher was using the audiolingual method. The class consisted of the arduous
task of memorizing vocabulary, conjugating verbs, and decoding simple sentences with no cultural
context whatsoever. While I didn t find French to be particularly difficult, I wasn t enthusiastic about
rote memorization. When I was given an opportunity to drop French in order to join a select choir, I
didn t think twice. My mid 1980 s high school didn t really push second language study, so I figured
that this was the end of my foray into language study. Perhaps it just wasn t for me...
However, by the end of my freshman year, I had a new interest in language and culture. This interest

Transactional Analysis Paper
Transactional Analysis 1. Concept of Transactional Analysis: Transactional Analysis is a theory
developed by Dr. Eric Berne in the 1950s. Originally trained in psychoanalysis, Berne wanted a theory
which could be understood and available to everyone and began to develop what came to be called
Transactional Analysis (TA). Transactional Analysis is a social psychology and a method to improve
communication. The theory outlines how we have developed and treat ourselves, how we relate and
communicate with others, and offers suggestions and interventions which will enable us to change and
grow. Transactional Analysis is underpinned by the philosophy that: people can change we all have a

The first phase (1955 1962) began with Berne s identification of the ego states (Parent, Adult, and
Child), which provided a perspective from which to explain thinking, feeling, and behaving. He
decided that the way to study personality was to observe here and now phenomena such as the client s
voice, gestures, and vocabulary. These observable criteria provide a basis for inferring a person s past
history and for predicting future problems. The second phase (1962 1966) focused on transactions and
games. It was during this period that TA became popular because of its straightforward vocabulary and
because people could recognize their own games. At this time TA was primarily a cognitive approach,
with little attention given to emotions. The third phase (1966 1970) gave attention to lifescripts and
script analysis. A lifescript is an internal plan that determines the direction of one s life. The fourth
phase (1970 to the present) is characterized by the incorporation of new techniques into TA practice
(such as those from the encounter group movement, Gestalt therapy, and psychodrama). TA is moving
toward more active and emotive models as a way of balancing its early emphasis on cognitive factors
and insight (Dusay Dusay, 1989 Initially criticised by some as a simplistic model, Transactional
Analysis is now gathering worldwide attention. It originally suffered much from the popularised

Inherit The Wind by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee
Every man has opinions, some which are stronger than others, but do these thoughts define the man?
In Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee s play Inherit The Wind opinions do not define the people who
advocate them. Each character in this play has viewpoints that influence their actions. The bravery,
honesty and determination required to express an opinion defines a person more than the opinion,
allowing one to respect a man who advocates unpopular opinions. When a man stands up for his
beliefs despite their unpopularity, he exemplifies great bravery. While Bertram Cates may not have
been the most brave man when the trial began, he later addresses the courtroom by saying, I feel I
am... I have been convicted of violating an unjust law. I will continue in the future, as I have in the
past, to oppose this law in any way I can, (115). Bert bravely states his point of view in his speech and
makes it clear that he stands behind Darwinism. While picking the jury members, Drummond
[objects] to all [the] Colonel talk, (42) because he believes it interferes with a fair trial. In addition to
annoying Brady, Drummond objects to the title because he is brave enough to stand up to what he
thinks is unjust. On a more general note, Drummond had the bravery to go to Hillsboro as the defense
attorney for Bert even though winning the case was nearly impossible and there was no pay. Although
their opinions were not popular in the play, Bert and Drummond show great bravery by standing up

Disorder. Our culture along with many others has been consumed with the ease and pleasure of
shopping, gaming, and social networking through online portals to the point that it has become an
overwhelming problem for some people. What Internet Addiction Disorder is exactly has been the
topic of much debate and so has what makes internet addiction so addicting. IAD is a serious problem
and is receiving attention from all over the world. Once we ve learn to identify the problem how do
we deal with it? As technology is becoming faster, better, and increasingly available, the need to study

However, research on Internet Addiction Disorder is being pursued throughout the international
community. Currently in China it is reported 13.7%, or about 10 million Chinese adolescent Internet
users meet Internet addiction diagnostic criteria. It has developed into such a major concern in China
that in 2007 China began limiting computer game use; present day laws now discourage more than 3
hours of daily game use (Block 307). In South Korea the average high school student spends 23 hours
a week gaming. Numerous authorities have been growing concerned about the escalating number of
individuals dropping out of school or work to spend time on computers. Over 1,043 counselors have
been educated in the treatment of Internet addiction in South Korea, and over 190 hospitals and
treatment centers have been enlisted. Also several preventive measures are now being introduced into
their schools to help combat IAD. The dilemma is so serious in South Korea that a series of 10
cardiopulmonary related deaths have occurred in Internet cafés along with a game related murder.
According to a story in The New York Time, a South Korea couple s life was ruined due to Internet
Addiction. The couple met through an online chat site and were soon married. Soon after that, they

The Politics And Last National Security Essay
Arms Trade, Weapons Sales, Armament Sales are just few terms used for the manufacture and sale or
trade of devices to protect a country, attack another and quite possibly benefit economically, or
politically on a global scale. Countries, entities, factions, make, sell, and give things of destruction to
others. This is a reality. The intent of this paper is to provide information that individuals can use to
determine the necessity. The economics, the politics and last the National Security are the three main
discussion points.
History
History of Arms Trade, Weapons Trade or the trade any of items necessary to protect, feed or conquer
dates back to the dawn of time. Scholars note that arms trade or weapons trade could be traced back
300,000 years (Thieme). As humans evolved and interacted with each other, scholars speculate that
the trade of many things occurred. The trade would include stories, knowledge, which can be
considered intangibles, then the tangibles, seeds for food, things to make tools, how to make a shelter,
weapons for protection and survival. Basically trade included instruction and things needed for every
aspect of life; to survive. Agers 2
Elements of Thought
Think about it this way. You have a clan or tribe with really good sharp rocks and a clan or tribe with
really good wood staffs. You put both together you have a more lethal device, for protection and
providing food. An item that was designed to help a human to survive evolved

A Breach Of Children s Online Privacy
A Breach of Children s Online Privacy: Examining the Fourth Amendment and a Right to Privacy
Regarding Mobile Apps

Citation Style: APAA Breach of Children s Online Privacy: Examining the Fourth Amendment and a
Right to Privacy Regarding Mobile Apps Children are more likely to be found on a technological
device that can access the Internet than outside being physically active. While in many cases, they are
knowledgeable online users, children are still at risk when using the Internet. Their right to privacy
online is endangered, especially when online businesses target children as consumers. Thus, an
increased threat of children s personal data collection exists.
In July 2014, the FTC filed a complaint against Amazon.com, Inc. for collecting personal data through
children s mobile apps. The company s in app charge system was not password protected, therefore
allowing children to post personal information without parental consent. Thus, the issue of online
privacy associated with mobile app purchases, particularly children s apps, remains a concern.
The purpose of this paper is to show that Amazon has violated its consumers (and their dependents )
Fourth Amendment right to privacy in regards to children s mobile app purchases. The paper will first
examine the content of the Children s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) of 1998; second,
demonstrate that Amazon has violated COPPA as well as the Fourth Amendment right to

Adult Learning Theory
Adult Learning Theory in Online Education
The developments of technology has changed the way which adult students may choose to obtain a
college degree. Through the use of their computer, they may opt to attend an online only college or
university. While it may not be apparent to the student, a lot of research has been conducted regarding
the most effective way to teach adults and children based upon how they learn. An awareness in
different teaching theories could make an adult student a better consumer when it comes to shopping
for their best value in education. This paper will explore the theories of andragogy and pedagogy,
along with their implications for online adult education.

Additionally, the main themes behind the assumptions about learning within this model are that the
student is dependent on the teacher for the activities which will perpetuate learning and that the
students past experiences have no value. This method also makes the assumption that the factors
which make a student want to learn are external in nature, such as good grades and pleasing others.
Wang states The primary reason the whole educational enterprise has been frozen into the pedagogical
model is that between infancy and adolescence, no other model is better than the pedagogical teaching
and learning model. (Wang, p.6). Since children are more dependent in nature, and do not have
knowledge through life experiences, the pedagogical method makes sense when it comes to teaching
at their level. However, there is a lot of debate about how well it works for students who are
independent and who possess a larger knowledge base. Andragogy is the art or science of teaching
adults (Knowles, 2012). Malcolm Knowles introduced the term in the United States in the 1960s
(Wang, 2011). Knowles notes that a major psychological difference between children and adults is the
realization that as an adult, one is the director of their own life. Additionally, because of this change in
self awareness, teaching adults as if they are dependent does not harbor any sense of respect for their
ability to be self directed. There are four assumptions which are made about adult learning

My Dream Day
Tossing, turning, and waking up three times before the sun knocks on my window is what my sleep
usually consists of. Not to mention the heat trying to strangle me as I wake up gasping for breath
every single day. This is a typical morning for me; as sleeping is always the first struggle of the day.
My bed finally kicks me out and my blanket strips its warmness away; now I have no choice but to get
dressed and ready for a perfect day full of nothing but dull diamonds excluding those that actually
shine to me. I finally got dressed and sat still, not fully ready, but not having any desire to move
further in the process. I finally got outside and it s 7:35 .Thoughts started to rush through my head like
a running river. I wonder if the bus came yet? If so, how am I going to get to school today? Although
these thoughts came rushing in my head; I knew that the bus would come whenever it chose to come,
leaving me bewildered in the process. Finally, I arrived at school infinitesimally irritated with how my
morning had gone so far not knowing things would get much worse as my day had so much in store
for me. I got to school and started to go through the line to get breakfast. I got my food and I was on
my way to class, but then, a person whose name I have no idea bumped into me and caused my arm to
spill all the food that was nestled in it. Great, I m hungry and now I will stay that way until someway,
somehow I find food to quench my hunger. I walked to the first period and

Chief Lieutenant Of The Tuskegee Machine Essay
The Tuskegee Machine by David H. Jackson Jr.
The Chief Lieutenant of the Tuskegee Machine by David H. Jackson Jr. exemplifies the life of Charles
Banks as Booker T. Washington s main abettor, in the Tuskegee Machine. This descriptive
autobiography of Charles Banks life s work, gives the reader an insight into the success of Booker T.

struggles of Mound Bayou. It also gives the reader an inside look on Booker T. Washington s complex,

a gap in this piece of information forces the reader to create there own definition may it be right or
wrong. Washington had influences and connections to with white philanthropists and those
philanthropists had resources that could benefit the town (51) . Banks connection with Washington
was a little extra push of Mound Bayou in the right direction financially, thanks to his connects in
white America. The members of the Tuskegee Machine were more than Washington s puppets of
promotion of self help and racial uplift. There was also the intendment of informing scholars of the
benefits received by the members. The members were described as businessmen who were wealthy
and intelligent. Jackson also presents a lieutenant and shows that if it were not for such key men,
Washington would not be as effective as he was. The only flaw of Jackson s purpose for writing this
biography was the lack of information on the other lieutenants. His main focus was on Washington
and Bank s relationship. Jackson embedded numerous themes without the biography. One of those
major themes was social status within the African American community. Throughout the book the

competition with prizes to be won.
At times there are brilliant live outdoors concerts, with the local students performing the traditional
UAE dances and dedicating poetry to the day. This is sometimes ended with fasinating fireworks or
laser displays.
The history and significance
Not long ago, the UAE was a land of desert inhabited by proud and resourceful nomadic Bedouin
tribes, fishing villages and date farms. Abu Dhabi consisted of several hundred palm huts (barasti)
huts, a few coral buildings and the Ruler s Fort. Situated along the creek, Dubai was a trading hub,
providing a safe haven before the Straits of Hormuz and beyond. Life today in the Emirates bears little
resemblance to that of 40 years ago.
Parts of the UAE were settled as far back as the 3rd millennium BC and its early history fits the
nomadic, herding and fishing pattern typical of the broader region. The Bedouin tribe was the
principal building block of UAE society. Bedouin, which means desert dweller, lived in varied terrain
moving between the ocean (where pearl diving and fishing were the main forms of sustenance), the

They might give Plaza the option of easily taking back the initial investment, however, they would not
be a focus for FDI nor would help in promoting Zaragoza as an important logistic European center.
International companies are still doubtful of settling down in PLAZA.
They still do not see the advantage of committing to a place where none of the services offered are
already up and running. Despite the facility, the airport still has very small cargo activity. Railways are
being built, but not a single train stops at PLAZA, therefore opportunities of linking with ports are still
to be exploited. Intermodality is still at the planning stage and the direct connection to Europe through
the Pyrenees is seemed as a long term project.
The brightest view of opening a tunnel through the Pyrenees is ten years away, due to the sudden
investment necessary to both Spain and France. The pillars of PLAZA cannot be built without the
necessary infrastructure. Up till now it is not a strong strategic area and is unable to apply
Intermodality; the only benefit is the comparatively low cost of land.
However, the cheaper land is not a very attractive choice for multinational companies; this will not
draw them to the park. The achievement of the project is still at risk. Managers, backed by the
government, still have to work tough to build up strong reliability and make sure that the essential
infrastructure is put in place so that Plaza becomes the best logistic park in

An Analysis Of Gatsby And Quentin And The Great...
Jay Gatsby and Quentin Compson come from noticeably different families, but they are similar in
more ways than expected. Their similarities are worth examining, despite the few differences between
the two, such as their personalities and upbringings. Gatsby and Quentin both have obsessions with
the past, the women that they love, as well as a desire to solely possess these women. By considering
these characters from Sound and the Fury and The Great Gatsby together, important life lessons can be
learned. There is no way to recapture the past, despite the amount of effort that is exerted to do so and
some dreams are not worth pursuing if they are impractical.
Gatsby and Quentin are both similar in their obsession with the past. The first three sections of Sound

everything as the present, Jason only focuses on the future, and Quentin lives in the past. He does not
simply remember the past occasionally, but Quentin is unable to think about anything but the past.
There are constant flashbacks throughout his section to memories of Caddy, his father, and fights. His

Environmental Exploring And The Environmental Effects Of...
For centuries, production and absorption of carbon dioxide was in balance with the ecosystem
however, in the last century, human activity has caused detrimental effects to the earth s atmosphere
due to the consequential changes in earth s natural feedback mechanism. This problem ultimately
originated from the industrial revolution in the 18th century where as a result caused the constant
production and burning of fossil fuels which has presently caused the warming of earth s surface. This
is ultimately a result of by the greenhouse effect ...which is caused by the interaction between earth s
atmosphere and incoming radiation from the sun. Greenhouse gases primarily consist of carbon
dioxide however others such as ...water vapour, methane, and nitrous oxide... are also associated to the
greenhouse effect. Scientifically, solar radiation passes through the atmosphere to the surface of earth,
where it is absorbed and then radiated upward as heat is the result of the high emission of greenhouse
gases. The most substantial and common way of emission is through the burning of fossil fuels in cars,
factories and electricity production. Therefore, human activities over the past century has ultimately
caused the more recent problem of the effects global warming is posing to our ecosystem and planet.

European Achievements In West Europe
Before the arrival of Europeans in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, the African kingdoms and
cities had a multitude of achievements. These come from different areas, like trade and wealth, and
added to the quality of life and functionality of the respective kingdom. The African empire s
achievements were successful in the advancement of civilization. In West Africa, the kingdoms
Ghana, Mali, and Songhai gained wealth and power through their achievements. Significantly, this
would change during the fifteenth and sixteenth with the introduction of the slave trade. However,
prior to the arrival of Europeans, the African empires had prevalent achievements in traditional
societal and political structures, wealth and luxury, and trade and harvesting.
The African empires developed societal and political structures that improved its functionality.
Songhai was under the rule of Sunni Ali until his death where Askia Muhammed Toure became king
after leading a revolt against Ali s son. He expanded the empire greatly until it extended northward,
westward, and eastward to trading cities. Notably, Toure improved the political and societal structure
of his empire. He opted for a centralized administration, and organized a bureaucracy. A centralized
administration created power and organization to the Songhai empire, allowing it to function
efficiently. Additionally, a bureaucracy assisted in regulating trade. The regulation of trade allows for
the empire the flourish and increase in wealth. Also, Africans organized their societies around the
family unit much like how Askia Muhammed Toure replaced the chiefs with members of his family
(Khan Academy). Similarly, the kingdom of Ghana showed characteristics of political and societal
structure as recorded in Through African Eyes. The excerpt states that, It possessed... social
organization that ensured justice and efficient political control, a strong army equipped with advanced
weapons, and a foreign policy that led to peace and cooperation with other people. (Document 3).
Through Arab sources, Ghana is mentioned having a king and officials who surrounded the throne
(Time Maps). Many of these characteristics are evident of advanced civilization and modern political

The War Of The World War II
Of all the years the human race has occupied this planet, we have not come face to face with many
events that could bring so many people together while simultaneously tearing them apart World War II
is one of those events. While the beginning is not set in stone, many will argue that the war all started
with the unwarranted German attack on Poland in September of 1939. As tensions rose between
countries, conflict began to swell. Over 20 countries were involved, and alliances were established.
The war was fought between two major alliances; the Allied powers and the Axis powers. The Allied
powers consisted of the following major countries: France, Great Britain, Russia, and the United
States. The Axis powers were Italy, Japan, and Germany. World War II involved more nations, cost
more money, and killed more people than any war before its time. The American English dictionary
defines total war as [a] war that is unrestricted in terms of the weapons used, the territory or
combatants involved, or the objectives pursued, especially one in which the laws of war are
disregarded. To say World War II was not a total war would be nonsense. World War II can be
considered the quintessential modern total war by both its physical and ideological scale. It was a war
of ideas, a war of losses, and a war of gains; but over all, it was a war of total involvement. It ripped
the world apart, and mankind was shook to its foundation. Every single world power in the 1940s was

According to some estimates, between 500 billion and a trillion plastic grocery bags are used globally

People believe if you want to keep your money, you have to respect them. A symbolic way of

Feminism In El Saadawi s Woman At Point Zero
Feminism is a worldly ideology that is recognized by everyone, some women are joining religious
groups despite their gender views. Others are fighting against the same groups, fearing the dangerous
mix of politics and religion misconception. Whether through or against religion they are choosing to
become part of the struggle for a better world. Non western women who proclaim themselves as
feminists often are critiqued for being disloyal to their culture and for selling out to western feminist
ideals. Through examining El Saadawi s book of Woman At Point Zero focusing on Islamic values and
western feminism, we can start to see where El Saadawi shapes Firdaus to stand on this issue of
femininity. The idea of feminism has a direct correlation to the Islam religion and what it expects of
Muslim women to do and act like. Because of preconceived notions that women are inferior to men, it
led to a stricter patriarchal regime. This made education for women become unnecessary because from
the beginning they were viewed like a tool for reproduction for the survival of the human species. In
Women Point Zero, the actions of Firdaus force men to change their beliefs and values to admit their
misconception about women. In the book the readers can infer the subconscious connection between
women and other women in a lower class. Lower class women have been through many problems in
the world and they are the wisest of them all because of their experiences compared to to higher class
women.

The School Poem
The two passages I will be comparing the aspects of death in is the Short Story The School and the
poem Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening these two stories have some similarities when it comes
to the aspect of death. However, I believe that the short story does do a lot more than the poem does in
this case. Mostly because of how much longer the short story is than the poem. In the short story The
School there are so many things literally dying in the story, and the school seems to have bad luck,
because most of the things they bring in eventually dies somehow, for example all the trees the kids
planted all died, and there were many more things. The Story told you exactly what was dying. What
this short story does that a poem doesn t is, that there are many things more going on in this short
story, and if you need to go back, and try to find certain things in this story it would not be hard to tear
it apart, and try to understand every line. In the poem it is much shorter, and we do not get to know
much about the characters, it is harder to go back, and look at certain points in the poem to be able to
understand it 100%. In this Poem a man is on his horse going somewhere, and this poem gives you
kind of a dark and mysterious feeling. This man stops in the middle of someone s woods, and just
stares out into it, for a pretty long time before going on his way. What this poem did that the short
story did not was confuse me. It was hard to understand what was going on in

reflection paper, I will turn my attention towards tea and the roles that it played in monastic life in
China as well as among the laity, while also continuing the discussion on the role of alcohol. To
conclude I would like to return to a previous question: what does the mode of otherness do in a
religious context. Taking this question, I will examine the relationship between otherness and popular
religion in China.

As Benn outlined: the precept against consuming alcohol is one of the five precepts observed by
laypeople. Even though many monks did consume alcohol, the promise of severe karmic
consequences prompted many to turn to tea. According to John Kieschnick, tea was a very valuable
resource for monks. He states: there were a number of reasons for monks to drink tea, including its
medicinal properties, its value as a stimulant after noon, and as an aid in staying alert during
meditation. Tea, like alcohol, could also be used as an offering at temples. Its rarity imbued it with
both symbolic value as well as economic value, factors which put the beverage in high monastic
regard. We can therefore conclude that both tea and alcohol played important roles, while tea became
instrumental to the operation of monastic life, alcohol played an important role in secular life.
While reading about popular religion, I was reminded of my question reading the role of the mode of
otherness in a religious context. I formulated a new question: Does popular religion and its food
practices exist in a mode of otherness? From the readings, I drew three possible responses to this
question.
The first possible response is a firm no. Popular religion belongs to the populace, and many aspects
are practiced by large swaths of the population regardless of other religious beliefs. As we have
studied, ancestor veneration, though distinctive practice of popular

Canada s Independence Of Canada
Between its establishment and the 1960 s, Canada rarely had any French speaking people in
authoritative or executive positions, and that led Quebecers to fear the loss of their language and
culture. As time approached the 1960 s, the Francophone population grew discontent and ready for
change, and a debate over Quebec s future began, and is still going on today. Much has happened to
make the notion of Quebec s sovereignty highly controversial, and as an issue, it is overlooked and
under acknowledged. There are many concerns over what could happen if Quebec did decide to
succeed from Canada, especially seeing as the province is quite large and happens to be centrally
located in the country. Some people argue that nothing is going to change ... Show more content on

The next year, in an attempt to improve the situation, Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau passed an act and
made the country s official languages, both French and English. However, in 1970, things took a turn
for the worst, and the terrorist Quebec Liberation Front [kidnapped] and [killed] the provincial labor
minister, and [took] a British diplomat hostage , Trudeau was forced to use martial law (Cooper).
Eventually, the pressure pushed the issue to an election, in 1980, and, in a 60/40 vote, Quebec ends up
remaining a part of Canada, which causes supporters to throw blame (Cooper). It finally seems like
the issue is resolved, but, no less than two years after the election, the British North America Act is
adopted as Canada s constitution, and all of the provinces, excluding Quebec, meet and change the
constitution to give them equal voices in the government, but Quebec rejects the change (Cohen). By
the time the 1990 rolls around, there is still no solution for the constitution issue, and the debate only
grows deeper. In 1992, however, the provinces and territories compromise, and recognize Quebec as a
distinct society , which was rejected later that year (Cooper). Four years later, everything was
authorized to declare Quebec s independence, but, negotiations with the rest of Canada fail to produce
an agreement, so, it fell through. The topic is not brought up

  • 2. Bill Nichols and the Discourse of Sobriety Do mockumentary films retain any trace of the discourse of sobriety ? Throughout film history, documentary and fiction films have denoted the polar opposites of film form with each representing two distinct and separate traditions, the cinema of reality and the cinema of fiction (Doherty 16). However what was once a clear distinction has become blurred as the increasing popularity of mockumentary continues to weaken the assumed boundaries between fact and fiction (Sicinski). Prior to this blurring of the lines the documentary genre enjoyed a privileged position amongst screen forms due its the truth claim (Glick). Reflecting Bill Nichols observation that documentary employs the discourse of sobriety (3), the truth claim is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Despite multiple documentary conventions being incorporated throughout the film, 24 hour Party People retains little trace of sobriety as Winterbottom s use of interviews, direct address, archival footage and narration aims to portray a predominantly fictional world as an actual real world, rather than depicting the world as it is. Although real archival footage of Joy Division performing at Wilson s club, as well as actual footage of Wilson s television show Granada Tonight is used throughout the film, Winterbottom ensures that such footage is subtly interwoven within sequences of fictional events thus eliminating any trace of sobriety that the use of real footage may have allowed for. Furthermore it can be argued that 24 hour Party People retains little evidence of Bill Nichols observation that documentary employs the discourse of sobriety , as a number of incidents are exaggerated throughout the film. For example, following a scene in which Wilson s wife is shown getting close with musician Howard Devoto, the cleaner present in the scene faces the camera, reveals himself as the real Howard Devoto and states that he has no recollection of ... • 3. Analysis Of Tim O Brien s The Things They Carried ... Xizhao Liu(Amber) American Literature Essay #3 Nov. 11, 2016 Male love in The Things They Carried The Things They Carried by Tim O Brien is a fictional book consisting of different stories from Vietnam war. Tim O Brien was trying to convey the real perspectives of the war to his readers by telling facts and stories through his personal memories he got from the war, and how things effect them and their life after the war. In order to express the tension in the war, O Brien depicts the experience of the soldiers by showing the different ways of expression of male love from these soldiers. Although there are many forms of friendship, some of which may vary from place to place, the friendship in the war is the most unique one. As the definition of Friendship, Friendship is a stronger form of interpersonal bond than an association. The bond between soldiers is more intense and real, and this is also the message that Tim O Brien shows in his book by using metaphor, details depicting and technique of repetition. Tim O Brien uses metaphor of photos to express the life before, tie all soldiers together, and thus show the friendship of them. The Thing They Carried is not only describing the life in the Vietnam war, but is more about the things that they carried, and the emotions and stories behind these things. All soldiers bring some small items, like comic books and hunting hatchets, which contain their memory from the past, to the war. My girl. What about her? The picture, it was ... Nice To Eat With You Chapter 1 Summary Ryan Klemann AP Literature and Composition Mrs. Mills Chapter 5 Nice to Eat with You: Acts of Communion: As Kumalo arrives in Johannesburg, he dines with Msimangu and other priests, which include blacks and whites. The priests at the mission sit together forgetting about color, signifying that the two races can be together in agreement, and they welcome Kumalo s story with interest. Kumalo talks about his village and describes how people will leave Ixopo and create a sense of brokenness in the tribe, which are all falling to ruin. One priest wished to hear more, but got up and left to attend other affairs, symbolizing an end of a relationship. At this meal, news of a Johannesburg couple that had been beaten and robbed by a couple of natives was discussed. This meal of the priests is not only an act of communion, but it represents a bond created by two different races, which is the main issue of this novel. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As Arthur Jarvis died in chapter eleven, he brought optimism and change to the people, similar to Jesus Christ bringing redemption and spiritual growth of many people. Due to his teachings being rejected by many people of South Africa, he was killed. As Arthur Jarvis was killed, there were pictures of crucified Christ and Abraham Lincoln, both people who fought for what they believed in, human compassion, and were killed for their beliefs. Through Arthur Jarvis, the reader sees sacrifice through his actions, which relate him to Jesus Christ, the greatest sacrifice we know of. (Foster, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Biomechanics Of The Tympanic Membrane Darisha Jhutty April 27, 2015 BIOE 154: Introduction to Biomechanics Professor Norman Biomechanics of the Tympanic Membrane Background: Over the past years, bioengineers have applied different methods for modelling the human ear. The human ear is an intricate biomechanical system with its primary function to sound perception and reception. The ear is divided into 3 main components, each with its own unique functions: the outer ear (pinna), the middle ear, and the inner ear. The outer ear, or the pinna, consists of the auricle, the skin covered cartilage of the ear visible on the outside of the head, as well as the opening to the auditory canal. The middle ear refers the air filled hollow space (tympanic cavity) behind the eardrum or tympanic membrane. The tympanic membrane is a thin, cone shaped membrane that separates the outer ear from the middle ear (Figure 1a). The tympanic membrane is made up of two main parts: the fragile pars flaccida (upper region) and robust the pars tersa (lower region). The pars tersa, composed of three layers: skin, fibrous tissue, and mucus, makes up the majority of the tympanic membrane. The pars flaccida is often associated with eustachian tube malfunctions and choleostomas, whereas the pars tersa is associated with perforations. There are 3 bones, the malleus, incus, and stapes, in the middle ear (Figure 1b) that vibrate when exposed to the vibrations of the sound waves. • 8. America s Impact On The Planet Essay As a species that continues to evolve and expand on this planet, humans have made many lasting impacts to their home. Some of these changes often go generally unnoticed, such as the shift in popular music, or fashion trends. Even transitions from job to job, or relocating to a new city seem to weigh lightly on the general public. However, unbeknownst to us, we as a species have a far greater impact on this planet than we would like to admit. Throughout our day to day lives we tend to unknowingly impact and mold or future. It can be something as simple as forgetting to recycle that jug of milk, or neglecting to clean up a spill after a self done oil change. Even the foods we eat and the way we manufacture them have a lasting effect on the planet. Perhaps one of the more noticeable ways we as a society affect the Earth though is how we build upon it. With much of the global population centralized in urban areas, and there continued growth. It is interesting to observe the way in which this urbanized land reacts to human interference. One of the more interesting aspects of urbanization is the use and management of water. With the continued expansion of cities, and the modification of the land in which these concrete jungles cover, changes to land are inevitable. In his book Urban Storm Water Management, Hormoz Pazwash briefly summarizes some of the impacts urbanization has to land, and water quality stating. Urban development alters the natural process of storm water runoff. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Montag s Influences in Farenheit 451 Essay In the novel, FAHRENHEIT 451 by Ray Bradbury, Guy Montag lives in an inverted society, where firemen make fires instead of put them out, and pedestrians are used as bowling pins for cars that are excessively speeding. The people on this society are hypnotized by giant wall size televisions and seashell radios that are attached to everyone s ears. For the Rule of St. Benedict, they are the good abbot and the proper monk. In Beowulf, the good warrior king and the loyal members of his warrior band. These images of the ruler and subject of each book are very similar and different as well as show the bad view of rulers and subjects and the books show the value systems of those writing the texts. These pieces of literature, how different they may seem, are relatively alike. First and foremost, they are alike in the ways of how they present their ruler. In Beowulf, King Hrothgar is wise as he gives his sermon to Beowulf. At last his part of pride within him waxes and climbs, the watchman of the soul slumbering the while. That sleep is too deep, tangled in its cares! Too close is the slayer who shoots the wicked shaft from his bow! For all his armour he is unable to protect himself: the insidious bolt buries in his chest, the crooked counsels of the accursed one (63) Which warns of the dangers of pride and fame which is something that an abbot was supposed to say towards a monk. Another way their rulers are somewhat similar is that they are both known to be father figures. Abbots are supposed to be devoted and tender as only a father can be, as they say in The Rule of St. Benedict which is much like Beowulf as King Hrothgar gives him fatherly advice. Originally trained in psychoanalysis, Berne wanted a theory which could be understood and available to everyone and began to develop what came to be called Transactional Analysis (TA). Transactional Analysis is a social psychology and a method to improve communication. The theory outlines how we have developed and treat ourselves, how we relate and communicate with others, and offers suggestions and interventions which will enable us to change and grow. The first phase (1955 1962) began with Berne s identification of the ego states (Parent, Adult, and Child), which provided a perspective from which to explain thinking, feeling, and behaving. These observable criteria provide a basis for inferring a person s past history and for predicting future problems. The second phase (1962 1966) focused on transactions and games. It was during this period that TA became popular because of its straightforward vocabulary and because people could recognize their own games. At this time TA was primarily a cognitive approach, with little attention given to emotions. The third phase (1966 1970) gave attention to lifescripts and script analysis. A lifescript is an internal plan that determines the direction of one s life. The fourth phase (1970 to the present) is characterized by the incorporation of new techniques into TA practice (such as those from the encounter group movement, Gestalt therapy, and psychodrama). TA is moving toward more active and emotive models as a way of balancing its early emphasis on cognitive factors and insight (Dusay Dusay, 1989 Initially criticised by some as a simplistic model, Transactional Analysis is now gathering worldwide attention. This method also makes the assumption that the factors which make a student want to learn are external in nature, such as good grades and pleasing others. Wang states The primary reason the whole educational enterprise has been frozen into the pedagogical model is that between infancy and adolescence, no other model is better than the pedagogical teaching and learning model. (Wang, p.6). Since children are more dependent in nature, and do not have knowledge through life experiences, the pedagogical method makes sense when it comes to teaching at their level. However, there is a lot of debate about how well it works for students who are independent and who possess a larger knowledge base. Andragogy is the art or science of teaching adults (Knowles, 2012). Knowles notes that a major psychological difference between children and adults is the realization that as an adult, one is the director of their own life. • 33. European Achievements In West Europe Before the arrival of Europeans in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, the African kingdoms and cities had a multitude of achievements. These come from different areas, like trade and wealth, and added to the quality of life and functionality of the respective kingdom. The African empire s achievements were successful in the advancement of civilization. In West Africa, the kingdoms Ghana, Mali, and Songhai gained wealth and power through their achievements. Significantly, this would change during the fifteenth and sixteenth with the introduction of the slave trade. However, prior to the arrival of Europeans, the African empires had prevalent achievements in traditional societal and political structures, wealth and luxury, and trade and harvesting. The African empires developed societal and political structures that improved its functionality. Songhai was under the rule of Sunni Ali until his death where Askia Muhammed Toure became king after leading a revolt against Ali s son. He expanded the empire greatly until it extended northward, westward, and eastward to trading cities. Notably, Toure improved the political and societal structure of his empire. He opted for a centralized administration, and organized a bureaucracy. A centralized administration created power and organization to the Songhai empire, allowing it to function efficiently. Additionally, a bureaucracy assisted in regulating trade. The regulation of trade allows for the empire the flourish and increase in wealth. Also, Africans organized their societies around the family unit much like how Askia Muhammed Toure replaced the chiefs with members of his family (Khan Academy). The War Of The World War II Of all the years the human race has occupied this planet, we have not come face to face with many events that could bring so many people together while simultaneously tearing them apart World War II is one of those events. While the beginning is not set in stone, many will argue that the war all started with the unwarranted German attack on Poland in September of 1939. As tensions rose between countries, conflict began to swell. Over 20 countries were involved, and alliances were established. The war was fought between two major alliances; the Allied powers and the Axis powers. The Allied powers consisted of the following major countries: France, Great Britain, Russia, and the United States. The Axis powers were Italy, Japan, and Germany. World War II involved more nations, cost more money, and killed more people than any war before its time. The American English dictionary defines total war as [a] war that is unrestricted in terms of the weapons used, the territory or combatants involved, or the objectives pursued, especially one in which the laws of war are disregarded. To say World War II was not a total war would be nonsense. World War II can be considered the quintessential modern total war by both its physical and ideological scale. It was a war of ideas, a war of losses, and a war of gains; but over all, it was a war of total involvement. It ripped the world apart, and mankind was shook to its foundation. Others are fighting against the same groups, fearing the dangerous mix of politics and religion misconception. Whether through or against religion they are choosing to become part of the struggle for a better world. Non western women who proclaim themselves as feminists often are critiqued for being disloyal to their culture and for selling out to western feminist ideals. Through examining El Saadawi s book of Woman At Point Zero focusing on Islamic values and western feminism, we can start to see where El Saadawi shapes Firdaus to stand on this issue of femininity. The idea of feminism has a direct correlation to the Islam religion and what it expects of Muslim women to do and act like. Because of preconceived notions that women are inferior to men, it led to a stricter patriarchal regime. This made education for women become unnecessary because from the beginning they were viewed like a tool for reproduction for the survival of the human species. In Women Point Zero, the actions of Firdaus force men to change their beliefs and values to admit their misconception about women. The School Poem The two passages I will be comparing the aspects of death in is the Short Story The School and the poem Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening these two stories have some similarities when it comes to the aspect of death. However, I believe that the short story does do a lot more than the poem does in this case. Mostly because of how much longer the short story is than the poem. In the short story The School there are so many things literally dying in the story, and the school seems to have bad luck, because most of the things they bring in eventually dies somehow, for example all the trees the kids planted all died, and there were many more things. The Story told you exactly what was dying. What this short story does that a poem doesn t is, that there are many things more going on in this short story, and if you need to go back, and try to find certain things in this story it would not be hard to tear it apart, and try to understand every line. In the poem it is much shorter, and we do not get to know much about the characters, it is harder to go back, and look at certain points in the poem to be able to understand it 100%. In this Poem a man is on his horse going somewhere, and this poem gives you kind of a dark and mysterious feeling. I wondered: what is the role of alcohol and other special beverages in Chinese religions? In this reflection paper, I will turn my attention towards tea and the roles that it played in monastic life in China as well as among the laity, while also continuing the discussion on the role of alcohol. To conclude I would like to return to a previous question: what does the mode of otherness do in a religious context. Taking this question, I will examine the relationship between otherness and popular religion in China. There were primarily two ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As Benn outlined: the precept against consuming alcohol is one of the five precepts observed by laypeople. Even though many monks did consume alcohol, the promise of severe karmic consequences prompted many to turn to tea. According to John Kieschnick, tea was a very valuable resource for monks. He states: there were a number of reasons for monks to drink tea, including its medicinal properties, its value as a stimulant after noon, and as an aid in staying alert during meditation. Tea, like alcohol, could also be used as an offering at temples. Its rarity imbued it with both symbolic value as well as economic value, factors which put the beverage in high monastic regard. We can therefore conclude that both tea and alcohol played important roles, while tea became instrumental to the operation of monastic life, alcohol played an important role in secular life. While reading about popular religion, I was reminded of my question reading the role of the mode of otherness in a religious context. I formulated a new question: Does popular religion and its food practices exist in a mode of otherness? From the readings, I drew three possible responses to this question.
