Underground Railroad Benefits
The Underground Railroad not only benefited slaves, but helped society in numerous ways. The
Underground Railroad was a system abolitionists used to help slaves escape to the North. It reunited
families who were separated by slavery and made life better for the slaves that were able to escape
safely, like Harriet Tubman. People from different backgrounds, races, and religions were involved in
the escapes. The Underground Railroad was very dangerous, for slaves and the abolitionists who
helped them. The Railroad s impact later led to more freedom for black men and women in America.
The Underground Railroad was not a railroad, but a system created to help free slaves. The
abolitionists and slave owners used railroad terms such as conductor , ... Show more content on

Harriet Tubman made 19 trips to the South, risking her own freedom, to liberate over 300 slaves.
William Still, an African American abolitionist and civil rights activist, helped free nearly 800 slaves
in 14 years. Quakers, the Religious Society of Friends were some of the earliest abolitionists. In fact,
two Quakers, Levi and Catherine Coffin, were believed to have assisted more than 3,000 slaves in
escaping. Vigilance committees, or stockholders contributed money, goods, and sometimes clothes to
the fugitive slaves.
In conclusion, the Underground Railroad was very beneficial to society. It was used by many to escape
the cruelty of slavery. Though there were many dangers involved with the Underground Railroad,
hundreds of thousands of slaves and abolitionists who assisted them took the risk. There were many
people who helped the runaway slaves in any way they could. Though it was a dark time in our

Criticism Of Piecemeal Social Engineering
the state from the ground up. It is radical. Piecemeal social engineering, however, does not have the
same idealized society as the end point, or at least, sees it as something in the far distance. Piecemeal
is far less risky, for several reasons that Popper points out in his critique. Firstly, because piecemeal
social engineering looks at solving the most urgent evils of society, and not just trying to get rid of all
of them, with the goal of creating a heaven on earth, it is a method that can be applied to at any
moment (Popper 148). Small changes that improve happiness is much easier to do than trying to fully
eliminate suffering. An example of this type of improvement would be call centers for parents with
sick children. This would allow the parents to call and get support from a registered nurse or doctor,
without having to wait in long lines at the hospital, or adding to those long lines. Piecemeal is about
solving issues that are occurring right now, and by doing that, is bettering society. This also makes this
method faster that utopian, which takes generations for the blueprint to be seen though, instead of
smaller aspects being fixed right away. There are many other issues that are connected to the long
timeframe of utopian social engineering takes. Popper points out that making a heaven on earth is not
something that can be done in one or more generations. The leader who starts the plan, will not be the
same one there when the state finally reaches the final

Character Analysis Of The Play Our Town By James Naughton
OUR TOWN
Sammie Griffin
Drama1310
November 21, 2017
I watched the play Our Town and I have to say that my views on plays and any kind of art have been
changed forever. It was directed by James Naughton. In this paper I will describe my experience as a
first time play watcher and what I thought about the play and set in general. It was set in 1938, it tells
a story of a small town of Grover s Corner in New Hampshire between 1901 and 1913. It basically
tells the story of everyday life by normal average people and lets say plenty of church s. I believe the
director and set producer are trying to bring you into that world of the early 1900 s. With the clothes
and the way the old man starts telling the play almost transports you there, you almost feel like you
could be at a small town kitchen cleaning and cooking for your polish children. They try to make it as
believable as possible. Just his language, how he says town folk , and in the holla makes you feel
almost cozy inside thinking about your own childhood. I believe them not having a big set made with
all kinds of props makes you feel the bare necessity of life back then, you didn t need much and you
really didn t get much so it brings it back to bare bones of the theatrical performance. The clothes for
the play were perfect, at least in my opinion. It looks like what the average person would wear back
then and had no fancy frills or even bright colors. It even showed an average day daughter in her teen
years. I say

Buena Vista Social Club Essay
In Wim Wender s Buena Vista Social Club, a sense provoking landscape is created through sounds and
visuals of both Havana and the collaborative musical effort of the members of Buena Vista Social
Club. Although we have examined many examples of landscapes through photographs and paintings,
the documentary offers a unique observance of landscape through its incorporation of moving images
and the sounds that accompany them. This is especially important when analyzing this film s
landscape, as the music embodies not only the main achievement of the group, but of the sounds of
Havana and its past. Buena Vista Social Club offers an interesting perspective on how Havana s
landscape has crumbled, changed and disappeared, only to be reconstituted through ... Show more

Throughout the entire film, the unknown audience follows along with the story of the Buena Vista
Social Club through a concert that Brian Davis would describe as a contact zone, which is a social
place where cultures meet, clash, and grapple with each other (Davis 84). In this interaction the Buena
Vista Social Club serves as the center, while the audience serves as the periphery that is receiving
ideas, images, and materials from the center through the lyrics of the song and music being played by
the instruments (Davis 83). Most of the songs that Buena Vista Social Club perform are centered
around the day to day struggles and celebrations of the people of Havana, whether that be a city
dweller or a campesino. The performance by the group is thus an auditory landscape of the true
lifestyle of the Havana natives and it is inherently an exhibit to the outsider of the crumbled landscape
of 1950s Havana that was reconstructed through the Buena Vista Social Club musical project.
Although the focus is primarily on the Buena Vista Social Club, the audience plays its part in the
landscape of this contact zone by expressing their approval and the excitement brought about by the
performance of the music group through the cheers and applause that can be heard throughout the

American Transcendentalist Writers Essay
Following the influx of the puritanical style of writing in America during the 17th Century by the
Founding Fathers, it could be said that what we now know as the collective `American writing was
once created almost as an effort to distance its own style from that of other European styles.
Perhaps not being incredibly popular outside their own circle of influence, writers such as Ralph
Waldo Emerson and other Transcendentalists began, in the 19th Century, to weave a new form of
writing using philosophy as the `vehicle of thought . While this allowed them to explore new and
untouched areas in the mind, it also greatly influenced many later writers from Henry Thoreau to the
more `popular and recent Mark Twain.
Let us begin with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although some critics may treat Walden as simply a text on the love of nature, Thoreau s message,
and indeed philosophy, seems to lay deeper. Although he never openly criticises the state of America,
there are certainly references to suggest that this text is somewhat a social commentary or criticism of
the society in which he lived. For example he suggests `Better if [men] had been born in the open
pasture and suckled by a wolf, that they might have clearer eyes what field they were called to labour
in . Through this extract, and indeed through much of the text, we can see that Thoreau uses the image
of nature to suggest his own ideal of society. It seems that by isolating himself from civilisation, he
begins to understand himself through self realisation and thus establishes his own identity. From the
question, `Why should they begin digging their own graves as soon as they are born? , we learn a little
of Thoreau s philosophy on life: he disagrees with the collective identity of the increasingly capitalist
America in which he lives, asking why should we passively comply with a capitalist machine?
Similar to the way in which Thoreau isolated himself from civilisation, poet Emily Dickinson also
attempted to question the values of this new society in which she lived, except this time from within
the seclusion of her own home in Massachusetts.
Clearly Dickinson s poetry was far from anything the American public had

complained that his character on Sherlock was too girly and he felt like it was wrong and unmanly to

about black people which caused a huge storm on twitter, Cumberbatch later went on a live interview

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Electoral System
The Oxford Dictionary (Oxforddictionaries.com, 2016) defines an election as a formal and organised
choice by vote of a person for a political office or other position . This is the same in all democratic
countries, however, no two countries have the exact same procedure for carrying out elections. There
are many ways in which elections can differ from state to state, for example, does the entire
population have the same choice of people to vote for or is the voting based on constituencies, or are
people voting for individuals or a whole party. The variation between them lies within the electoral
systems employed in each of these countries. Electoral systems are simply the rules of elections and
how they are conducted. The electoral system affects the type and level of interaction between
politicians and constituents (PR STV and localism in Irish politics, 2011).
In Ireland, since gaining independence in 1922, representatives of Dáil Eireann have been elected by
proportional representation by single transferable vote (Gallagher, 2016). In 1937 it was set out in

This representation can sometimes mean a member of the Dáil prioritises the good of their own local
people instead of what is best for the state. Candidates in the general election have to make certain
promises to their community in the hopes of being elected and if elected have to do their best to ensure
they will be re elected by keeping their supporters content. This may not seem like such a negative
effect at first but it can result in a parliament, weakened by its members lack of focus on national
issues, and thereby unable to fully hold the government to account (PR STV and localism in Irish

Heart Of Darkness Hypocrisy
Beware that, when fighting monsters, you yourself do not become a monster...for when you gaze long
into the abyss, the abyss gazes into you (Nietzsche). This powerful quote comes from Friedrich
Nietzsche, and it is stating the idea that as people look deeply into the things that repel them, they are
in danger of being affected by them. This occurs in many instances in Joseph Conrad s novel, Heart of
Darkness. There are also many themes in Heart of Darkness, many of them circulating around the idea
of hypocrisy. Conrad utilizes many different literary elements, including characterization, symbolism,

The character of Kurtz displays this characterization as he fights against oblivion. The reveal of Kurtz
s obsession with acquiring ivory communicates that he wished to obtain whatever it was that ivory

himself in debauchery and falls away into obscurity through the egregious pursuit of ivory. Conrad

heavens I tell you, it had gone mad (Conrad 61). ADD STUFF HERE Marlow showcases his own
characterization throughout the novel in narrative form. When he first is exposed to the shameless
cruelty inflicted on the natives, he is horrified (Conrad). However, as he fights his own battle against
the confusion in his mind, he winds up even more confused as he transitions to accepting this cruelty
by the end of the novel. Marlow and Kurtz are both characters who exemplify Conrad s use of

The Importance Of Community At A Young Age
Growing up in The Commune, as my friends called it, I learned a lot about the importance of
community at a young age. When I was seven years old I moved to Tierra Nueva Cohousing, a unique
intentional community of 26 households that my parents developed when they returned from their
Peace Corp work in Africa. Cohousing was designed to facilitate the development of strong
community bonds through regularly sharing meals with neighbors, cultivating a common garden,
making decisions through consensus, and caring for one another in times of need. One of the most
extraordinary experiences growing up in this environment was when the Cohousing community
members came together to care for me and my family after my little brother passed away from
complications of hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Our neighbors brought meals, provided childcare,
and served as an important source of emotional support that was vital for the healing of our family.
Coming from such a strong community built around interpersonal connections, supportive friendships,
and a common desire for positive change, I knew that wanted a career that shared these values, and
that is ultimately how I fell in love with Internal Medicine. However, I was initially drawn to
Medicine by the complex diagnostic, therapeutic, and social puzzles I encountered during my third
year Internal Medicine rotation. Working at both the San Francisco County Hospital and the UCSF

Sexual intercourse or palpable affection are but two, albeit very critical, factors that play to the healthy
levels of physical intimacy shared by a couple. Unfortunately, when a spouse abuses substances a
whole litany of side effects can occur. For starters, the non alcoholic spouse may be generally less
attractive due to their significant others behavior. Also, the libido of either a man or a woman are
adversely impacted by chronic substance abuse. Lastly, desire may be there for both parties, but male
addicts and alcoholics may experience some degree of erectile dysfunction. Other than the obvious
endorphins, dopamine and other feel good chemical reactions that naturally occur when two people
engage in sexual congress, couples that fall short in this part of a relationship may feel additional
frustration and inadequacies that tie into a deeper emotional intimacy concern. Secondly, emotional
intimacy is for most couples the far more important tie that will make or break many relationships.
After all, couples spend a majority of their time connecting on levels other than sex. Respect, trust,
value and other feelings create bonds that will dictate the success of a relationship. Alcohol and drugs
are effective in their means to distort and inhibit emotional connections. For the substance abuser, the
priority first and foremost is how to get that next drink or drug. This is a tough pill to swallow for

Essay On The Seven Years War
The Seven Years War marked a huge turning point in American History, as it changed the outlook of
the British, making them branch away from their salutary neglect, and convinced the Americans for
Independence as the British started changing their way of enforcing taxes and laws. The War changed
the people s opinions in both Europe and America. Americans started to despise the British, while the
British started to resent the colonists because they did not help with paying the war. The changes and
similarities that occurred before and after the war led to a more enforced government, as Salutary
Neglect was forgotten, led to resentment towards each other as the British thought the war debt was
left to be paid by the colonists, and became a turning point as colonists started to struggle against
Britain s imperial balance of power in North America and the continuity of Native Americans fighting
for their land.

Cultural Anthropology
What is anthropology? Anthropology is the scientific and humanistic study of human beings. So what
is cultural anthropology? Cultural anthropology is the study of human thoughts and behaviors. As
soon as we are born we are taught what our cultural knowledge is; what our norms and values are, as
well as cultural construction and world view. Everyday we experience and encounter phenomenons
that are part of our culture; without realizing it. Before taking this class, I often thought that our
advanced society was the standard to which to measure all other societies from, but after reviewing the
material in this course, it is impossible to make such a comparison. Many of the people in a culture
similar to the U.S. would probably find most of the cultures we have studied to be slow strange or
undesirable. In fact, it seems that many of the societies actually prefer to live the way they do and they
accept it as normal. Normal is a relative term, and it is difficult to establish evidence to label a culture
or its characteristics as abnormal. What may seem to work here in the U.S. often would be disastrous
to other cultures. Last summer I had traveled parts of Europe with my friends, and it was astonishing
to see the difference between cultures. One thing that was noticed right off the bat was that the
Europeans start their week on a Monday and it ends on Sunday. While in the U.S. we start our week

Car And Motorcycle Shows That Relate To College
The greatest sight is cars and motorcycles, anything from little Hondas to Lamborghinis and also little
Harleys to big fast crotch rockets outside and everywhere around you, also my favorite the Yamaha
R6. Guys and girls revving their loud engines is the best sound ever. That is the place I feel the best at,
the car shows and motorcycles meets. The car and motorcycles shows can relate to college many ways
and with the most meaningful part. I would have to say the car and motorcycle shows/meets because
they can relate to college in many ways. One way is because some colleges sometimes have car shows
on campus grounds and lots of people go to them just like many people go to college, it is also on
college grounds. The second thing is that car shows and bike meets is time to get away from the home
work. To also have fun with your friends and to see cool cars and bikes. That is just like college
because you make new friends in college and it is time to get away from your parents for a while, to
start your transformation to adult life can what you will do. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

vehicles and I do not care about them all cars are the same . With those two quotes you do not find
those kinds of people at car shows just like at college, you do not hear students going around out loud

Owner Trust Essay
You have determined that you need to utilize an owner trust. What do you do now? First, involve your
aviation counsel and the flight department. Transferring your aircraft to an owner trust requires filings
with the FAA and the International Registry. If there is a loan, the lender will need to be notified so the
loan documents can be amended. Do not risk defaulting under your loan documents by trying to do
this without notifying your lender. Coordination with the flight department is needed to avoid
transferring the aircraft to the trust the day before an international flight is scheduled. Coordination
with the flight department will also avoid scheduling the transfer when the aircraft is in a jurisdiction
that will assess sales tax ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The trustee can only be removed for cause and the requirements about responding to requests for
information that originated with the FAA are requirements. You also need to notify your insurance
agent of the change of registered owner. At the end of all the paperwork, what are you really doing? 
Before the trustee can accept you as a customer the government requires that they perform due
diligence. That is why you had to provide all of that information and documentation to the trustee. 
When you sign the trust agreement, you are creating a trust with the selected provider as trustee and
your company as trustor. The trustee must also provide an Affidavit confirming that they meet the
FAA s requirements for serving as a trustee.  Depending on your tax planning, you may need to file
an exemption certificate and obtain a copy of a fuel receipt reflecting the aircraft s location on the day
of the transfer.  The bill of sale transfers the aircraft from the trustor (you) to the trustee of the trust.
 The trustee will use AC form 8050 1 to register the aircraft in its name with the FAA. If you need to
make an international flight within a few days after the change of registration, the trustee will also
need to file a Declaration of International Operations.  The transfer of the aircraft from you to the
trustee is registered on the International Registry (IR) as a contract of sale. You

Ophelia Foil To Hamlet
In a play filled with despair and suffering, love can still play an important role. Hamlet, Prince of
Denmark by William Shakespeare, is a play about revenge with eight deaths. Despite this, the
relationship between two characters, Hamlet and Ophelia is extremely vital to the theme of the work
and influences how the characters in the play act. It does this through how Ophelia acts like a foil to
Hamlet, how the pair views each other, and what themes present in the play the relationship
emphasizes..
One of the important points in the relationship between Hamlet and Ophelia is how Ophelia acts like a
foil to Hamlet. One of the ways Ophelia dos this is through her madness. While Hamlet fakes
madness, Ophelia is actually mad. Hamlet spends the

Women In Macbeth And Of Mice And Men
How are women presented in Macbeth Of Mice Men?
Shakespeare and Steinbeck present their female characters in a misogynistic light. To compare the
respective pieces we must consider several factors, which acted as a driving force towards the
portrayal of the female characters in their respective texts.
Shakespeare presents Lady Macbeth as a character who steers away from the stereotypical
characteristics of women derived by the societal norms of an Elizabethan society. These three
characteristics include: being a faithful and practicing Christian, being submissive to one s husband,
and a good caretaker. In Macbeth, the stereotypical roles are reversed, so Lady Macbeth performs the
dominating role in the relationship. To take her nurturing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Curley s wife clearly states I don t like Curley he aint a nice fellow. Lady Macbeth however deeply
expresses her love for Macbeth and uses this love and fondness for each other to attain their
simultaneous goals. On the other hand it could be argued that Lady Macbeth is completely guided by
her desire to gain self profit like Curley s wife. Macbeth initially remains thoughtful by saying I have
no spur to prick the sides of my intent, but only vaulting ambition . Later on in the text Macbeth
comes to rejecting the idea Lady Macbeth taunts his masculinity and plays on his weak state of mind
to make him accept the idea of regicide. So she may not be as loyal as she poses to be. Although
fidelity is a reasonably big factor it does not outweigh how evil Shakespeare has portrayed Lady
Macbeth, as she wants to commit murder. Her ambition is telling us that Shakespeare thinks women
are evil and breaking the rules results in death and likewise with Steinbeck. So to summarize, the
ambitions themselves are too different to be directly compared, but it is the causes, effects and
portrayal of ambition that allow one to examine the difference between the two pieces. In Of Mice and
Men, ambition can never be achieved; it is just a dream, which one strives for. In Macbeth, ambition
can be achieved but never enjoyed, as Shakespeare never allows his characters to stop and enjoy their
achievement. Finally we can conclude that Shakespeare s writing is more against the opposite sex as
he presents Lady Macbeth as immoral since she coaxed Macbeth to commit murder. Whereas Curley s
Wife isn t as moral to a certain extent depending on the ambiguous line of morality and whether
adultery was considered immoral to a 1930 s

Seth was back at school the following day, his mom wanted him to stay home, but Seth insisted he go

quizzing him about what had happened and if he was alright. Seth told Conner the doctor could not

but figured he was still shaken up a bit from the game.

Cinderella Lab Report
The primary goal of this investigation was to determine whether bacteria commonly isolated as a pair
from contact lens cases could coaggregate or cohere. The organisms were used in this study was
isolated from the contact lens cases of asymptomatic daily wearers and stored in culture stock. The
primary outcome of this study demonstrated that coaggregation and cohesion occurred between
Acinetobacter spp, Staphylococcus spp and Micrococcus spp. Two Gram positive bacteria,
Staphylococcus spp and Micrococcus spp also showed coaggregation. But, Acinetobacter spp and
Micrococcus spp showed sporadic coaggregation. However, no coaggregating pairs exhibited the high
scores given by the positive control paring of A. naeslundii and S. sanguinis, which ... Show more

Thus we sought to determine whether those bacteria that produced coaggregation were associated with
cohesion in contact lens case biofilm formation. Cohesion can also occur when a pioneer species
modifies the substratum to encourage adhesion of successor species. As, Staphylococcus spp are the
most commonly isolated from the lens cases, could be considered as pioneer species, but 10% of the
lens cases also showed the contamination of Gram negative bacteria. Based on recent in vivo data we
found Staphylococcus spp often isolated with Acinetobacter spp. There is other literature which also
showed the isolation of P. aeruginosa and S. marcescens from lens cases. The present study showed
cohesion between Staphylococcus spp and Acinetobacter spp/ Micrococcus spp, where
Staphylococcus spp can be considered as pioneer species and Acinetobacter and Micrococcus as
successor. Whist this study did not investigate the facilitating factor for the cohesion, will be worth to
consider in future study. The next step will be to see whether the elimination of Micrococcus and
Acinetobacter contamination from lens cases will reduce the adhesion of Staphylococcus spp which
may reduce the overall rate of contact lens case

Essay On Nascar
Is nascar a dangerous sport? Nascar is dangerous but not as dangerous as you think. Many people
think nascar is one of the most dangerous sports. Nascar has changed dramatically over the past few
years. Nascar has many different rule to make sure people stay safe. Nascar drivers have to do certain
things just to get behind the wheel for the first time. When nascar was first introduced in 1948, they
didn t have very many rules at all. I m going to explain how nascar has changed from 1948 to 2017.
Nascar was first invented February 21, 1948. In June 19, 1948, was the first nascar race ever. They
didn t have many safety rules or safety barriers. So yes back then nascar was extremely dangerous. In

Indianapolis 500.In 2003, nascar is required an additional fire extinguishing cylinder solely dedicated
to the fuel cell area in all three major touring series, mounted in the cockpit and automatically
activated by heat. The benefits were immediate, as no drivers suffered significant injuries as a result of
contact with the safer barrier. Nascar officials then went to Lincoln, Neb., for a series of tests using
heavier stock cars, and came away impressed. Within the next two years, nearly every track on the
Cup schedule would have safer barriers at key locations. Every decade, there s a significant
improvement in the level of understanding of energy management. Sicking said.
So do you still think nascar is dangerous? Yes it has its dangerous moments but safety has came a long
way. Many people died to enforce safety to happen. Nascar isn t as dangerous anymore. They are still
making safety changes to make drivers more safe. No matter how much nascar tries to make safe
changes there will still be some dangerous things. Although anything in life has some danger. Nascar
hasn t had someone die since 2001. In my opinion nascar is almost as safe as it can

Comparing Islamic and Arabic Architecture Essay
Comparing Islamic and Arabic Architecture

The Hagia Sophia church and the Suleymaniye mosque are separated by a thousand years but are tied
together eternally. One representing the achievement of the Christian Byzantine empire and the other
representing the ability of the Islamic Ottoman empire and its architect Sinan. Two empires that had
very little in common other than their architecture and region. In earlier history the Dome of the Rock
represented the Islamic empire s attempt to rival the newly defeated Byzantine empire and its
architectural achievements such as the Holy Sepulchre. As history often repeats itself, with similar

SIMILARITIES
Because Sinan worked on the Hagia Sophia he became intimately familiar with its form and structure
so its not surprising that it had an influence on much of his work. Of all his buildings, conceptually the
Suleymaniye is probably the most similar to the Hagia Sophia with the basic concept of the central
domed space made larger with attached semidomed spaces which in turn have smaller spaces attached
topped by smaller domes. Because the dome of the Hagia Sophia was considered to be a great feat for
the Christians Sinan designed the dome of the Suleymaniye to send the message that not only were
Muslims just as capable but, with an even larger and higher dome, that they were superior.
More similarities can be drawn with the forms and structures of the two buildings. In addition to the
dome and semidomes, the main arches, piers, buttresses, and galleries were adopted by the
Suleymaniye. These were all part of the basic structural system in both buildings of a dome on four
supports. Sinan also used pendentives as the structural system under the main dome and squinches as a
transitional element between semidomes and the rest of the structure. Additionally Sinan used similar
wide arches in the Suleymaniye although they were not needed structurally and were probably used
for their formal appearance. The piers of the Suleymaniye are also similar with their projections used
to support the bracing arches. These are the basic formal and

Maxine Hong Kingston s `` No Name Woman ``
Being an author of several praised works, Maxine Hong Kingston has been deemed a noteworthy
American writer since her first book debuted. Her unique style and interesting blend of myth and truth
in memoir form garnered her international attention and won her several awards. Kingston s works
have put heavy emphasis on her family history and her experiences as a Chinese American, so it is no
surprise that she has been received well by many and misunderstood by others at the same time. A
discussion on one of her most popular works, No Name Woman , and a look at the different ways
Kingston s works have been interpreted should reveal how literature can have different meanings
depending on what one is looking for.
Kingston was born in October of 1940 in the Californian city of Stockton and since her parents were
Chinese emigrants to the United States, Kingston became a first generation Chinese American (
Maxine Hong Kingston ). Coming to the United States changed the career situation for both of
Kingston s parents, as her father went from teaching to working in a gambling house and her mother
went from being a doctor to a stay at home mom raising six children (Baym 1567). After attending the
University of California in Berkeley and graduating in 1962, Kingston spent many years teaching
through various jobs before getting published in 1976 ( Maxine Hong Kingston ). Once her initial
book came out, her career as a writer took off as many critics gave raving reviews of her first

  • 2. Underground Railroad Benefits The Underground Railroad not only benefited slaves, but helped society in numerous ways. The Underground Railroad was a system abolitionists used to help slaves escape to the North. It reunited families who were separated by slavery and made life better for the slaves that were able to escape safely, like Harriet Tubman. People from different backgrounds, races, and religions were involved in the escapes. The Underground Railroad was very dangerous, for slaves and the abolitionists who helped them. The Railroad s impact later led to more freedom for black men and women in America. The Underground Railroad was not a railroad, but a system created to help free slaves. The abolitionists and slave owners used railroad terms such as conductor , ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Harriet Tubman made 19 trips to the South, risking her own freedom, to liberate over 300 slaves. William Still, an African American abolitionist and civil rights activist, helped free nearly 800 slaves in 14 years. Quakers, the Religious Society of Friends were some of the earliest abolitionists. In fact, two Quakers, Levi and Catherine Coffin, were believed to have assisted more than 3,000 slaves in escaping. Vigilance committees, or stockholders contributed money, goods, and sometimes clothes to the fugitive slaves. In conclusion, the Underground Railroad was very beneficial to society. It was used by many to escape the cruelty of slavery. Though there were many dangers involved with the Underground Railroad, hundreds of thousands of slaves and abolitionists who assisted them took the risk. There were many people who helped the runaway slaves in any way they could. Though it was a dark time in our history, the Underground Railroad was the beginning of the end of ... • 3. Criticism Of Piecemeal Social Engineering the state from the ground up. It is radical. Piecemeal social engineering, however, does not have the same idealized society as the end point, or at least, sees it as something in the far distance. Piecemeal is far less risky, for several reasons that Popper points out in his critique. Firstly, because piecemeal social engineering looks at solving the most urgent evils of society, and not just trying to get rid of all of them, with the goal of creating a heaven on earth, it is a method that can be applied to at any moment (Popper 148). Small changes that improve happiness is much easier to do than trying to fully eliminate suffering. An example of this type of improvement would be call centers for parents with sick children. This would allow the parents to call and get support from a registered nurse or doctor, without having to wait in long lines at the hospital, or adding to those long lines. Piecemeal is about solving issues that are occurring right now, and by doing that, is bettering society. This also makes this method faster that utopian, which takes generations for the blueprint to be seen though, instead of smaller aspects being fixed right away. There are many other issues that are connected to the long timeframe of utopian social engineering takes. Popper points out that making a heaven on earth is not something that can be done in one or more generations. The leader who starts the plan, will not be the same one there when the state finally reaches the final ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Character Analysis Of The Play Our Town By James Naughton OUR TOWN Sammie Griffin Drama1310 November 21, 2017 I watched the play Our Town and I have to say that my views on plays and any kind of art have been changed forever. It was directed by James Naughton. In this paper I will describe my experience as a first time play watcher and what I thought about the play and set in general. It was set in 1938, it tells a story of a small town of Grover s Corner in New Hampshire between 1901 and 1913. It basically tells the story of everyday life by normal average people and lets say plenty of church s. I believe the director and set producer are trying to bring you into that world of the early 1900 s. With the clothes and the way the old man starts telling the play almost transports you there, you almost feel like you could be at a small town kitchen cleaning and cooking for your polish children. They try to make it as believable as possible. Just his language, how he says town folk , and in the holla makes you feel almost cozy inside thinking about your own childhood. I believe them not having a big set made with all kinds of props makes you feel the bare necessity of life back then, you didn t need much and you really didn t get much so it brings it back to bare bones of the theatrical performance. The clothes for the play were perfect, at least in my opinion. It looks like what the average person would wear back then and had no fancy frills or even bright colors. It even showed an average day daughter in her teen years. I say ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Buena Vista Social Club Essay In Wim Wender s Buena Vista Social Club, a sense provoking landscape is created through sounds and visuals of both Havana and the collaborative musical effort of the members of Buena Vista Social Club. Although we have examined many examples of landscapes through photographs and paintings, the documentary offers a unique observance of landscape through its incorporation of moving images and the sounds that accompany them. This is especially important when analyzing this film s landscape, as the music embodies not only the main achievement of the group, but of the sounds of Havana and its past. Buena Vista Social Club offers an interesting perspective on how Havana s landscape has crumbled, changed and disappeared, only to be reconstituted through ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Throughout the entire film, the unknown audience follows along with the story of the Buena Vista Social Club through a concert that Brian Davis would describe as a contact zone, which is a social place where cultures meet, clash, and grapple with each other (Davis 84). In this interaction the Buena Vista Social Club serves as the center, while the audience serves as the periphery that is receiving ideas, images, and materials from the center through the lyrics of the song and music being played by the instruments (Davis 83). Most of the songs that Buena Vista Social Club perform are centered around the day to day struggles and celebrations of the people of Havana, whether that be a city dweller or a campesino. The performance by the group is thus an auditory landscape of the true lifestyle of the Havana natives and it is inherently an exhibit to the outsider of the crumbled landscape of 1950s Havana that was reconstructed through the Buena Vista Social Club musical project. Although the focus is primarily on the Buena Vista Social Club, the audience plays its part in the landscape of this contact zone by expressing their approval and the excitement brought about by the performance of the music group through the cheers and applause that can be heard throughout the ... • 6. American Transcendentalist Writers Essay Following the influx of the puritanical style of writing in America during the 17th Century by the Founding Fathers, it could be said that what we now know as the collective `American writing was once created almost as an effort to distance its own style from that of other European styles. Perhaps not being incredibly popular outside their own circle of influence, writers such as Ralph Waldo Emerson and other Transcendentalists began, in the 19th Century, to weave a new form of writing using philosophy as the `vehicle of thought . While this allowed them to explore new and untouched areas in the mind, it also greatly influenced many later writers from Henry Thoreau to the more `popular and recent Mark Twain. Let us begin with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although some critics may treat Walden as simply a text on the love of nature, Thoreau s message, and indeed philosophy, seems to lay deeper. Although he never openly criticises the state of America, there are certainly references to suggest that this text is somewhat a social commentary or criticism of the society in which he lived. For example he suggests `Better if [men] had been born in the open pasture and suckled by a wolf, that they might have clearer eyes what field they were called to labour in . Through this extract, and indeed through much of the text, we can see that Thoreau uses the image of nature to suggest his own ideal of society. It seems that by isolating himself from civilisation, he begins to understand himself through self realisation and thus establishes his own identity. From the question, `Why should they begin digging their own graves as soon as they are born? , we learn a little of Thoreau s philosophy on life: he disagrees with the collective identity of the increasingly capitalist America in which he lives, asking why should we passively comply with a capitalist machine? Similar to the way in which Thoreau isolated himself from civilisation, poet Emily Dickinson also attempted to question the values of this new society in which she lived, except this time from within the seclusion of her own home in Massachusetts. Clearly Dickinson s poetry was far from anything the American public had ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Cumberbatch has had his moments where because he came from a rich family, he tended to look down on others. Cumberbatch commented about the 2011 London riots in a interview and the point that came across was because they are poor, they don t have a right to speak up. Cumberbatch also complained that his character on Sherlock was too girly and he felt like it was wrong and unmanly to have curly hair on a show with mostly all males. Benedict had used the term coloured while talking about black people which caused a huge storm on twitter, Cumberbatch later went on a live interview and apologized for not only his actions, but his grandfathers as well as people were bringing back his grandfathers past with slaves. Cumberbatch also misgendered a recent transgender, Chelsea Manning during an interview and compared Frankenstein s worldwide known monster to people with autism. • 8. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Electoral System The Oxford Dictionary (Oxforddictionaries.com, 2016) defines an election as a formal and organised choice by vote of a person for a political office or other position . This is the same in all democratic countries, however, no two countries have the exact same procedure for carrying out elections. There are many ways in which elections can differ from state to state, for example, does the entire population have the same choice of people to vote for or is the voting based on constituencies, or are people voting for individuals or a whole party. The variation between them lies within the electoral systems employed in each of these countries. Electoral systems are simply the rules of elections and how they are conducted. The electoral system affects the type and level of interaction between politicians and constituents (PR STV and localism in Irish politics, 2011). In Ireland, since gaining independence in 1922, representatives of Dáil Eireann have been elected by proportional representation by single transferable vote (Gallagher, 2016). In 1937 it was set out in Bunreacht na hEireann that Dail Eireann shall be composed of members who represent constituencies ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This representation can sometimes mean a member of the Dáil prioritises the good of their own local people instead of what is best for the state. Candidates in the general election have to make certain promises to their community in the hopes of being elected and if elected have to do their best to ensure they will be re elected by keeping their supporters content. This powerful quote comes from Friedrich Nietzsche, and it is stating the idea that as people look deeply into the things that repel them, they are in danger of being affected by them. This occurs in many instances in Joseph Conrad s novel, Heart of Darkness. There are also many themes in Heart of Darkness, many of them circulating around the idea of hypocrisy. The reveal of Kurtz s obsession with acquiring ivory communicates that he wished to obtain whatever it was that ivory offered, such as wealth, importance, and power. As Kurtz fights against this with complete abandon of morals, he loses himself in debauchery and falls away into obscurity through the egregious pursuit of ivory. Conrad writes, But his soul was mad. Being alone in the wilderness, it had looked within itself and, by heavens I tell you, it had gone mad (Conrad 61). • 13. The Importance Of Community At A Young Age Growing up in The Commune, as my friends called it, I learned a lot about the importance of community at a young age. When I was seven years old I moved to Tierra Nueva Cohousing, a unique intentional community of 26 households that my parents developed when they returned from their Peace Corp work in Africa. Cohousing was designed to facilitate the development of strong community bonds through regularly sharing meals with neighbors, cultivating a common garden, making decisions through consensus, and caring for one another in times of need. One of the most extraordinary experiences growing up in this environment was when the Cohousing community members came together to care for me and my family after my little brother passed away from complications of hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Our neighbors brought meals, provided childcare, and served as an important source of emotional support that was vital for the healing of our family. Coming from such a strong community built around interpersonal connections, supportive friendships, and a common desire for positive change, I knew that wanted a career that shared these values, and that is ultimately how I fell in love with Internal Medicine. The War changed the people s opinions in both Europe and America. Americans started to despise the British, while the British started to resent the colonists because they did not help with paying the war. The changes and similarities that occurred before and after the war led to a more enforced government, as Salutary Neglect was forgotten, led to resentment towards each other as the British thought the war debt was left to be paid by the colonists, and became a turning point as colonists started to struggle against Britain s imperial balance of power in North America and the continuity of Native Americans fighting for their land. Cultural anthropology is the study of human thoughts and behaviors. As soon as we are born we are taught what our cultural knowledge is; what our norms and values are, as well as cultural construction and world view. Everyday we experience and encounter phenomenons that are part of our culture; without realizing it. Before taking this class, I often thought that our advanced society was the standard to which to measure all other societies from, but after reviewing the material in this course, it is impossible to make such a comparison. Many of the people in a culture similar to the U.S. would probably find most of the cultures we have studied to be slow strange or undesirable. In fact, it seems that many of the societies actually prefer to live the way they do and they accept it as normal. Normal is a relative term, and it is difficult to establish evidence to label a culture or its characteristics as abnormal. What may seem to work here in the U.S. often would be disastrous to other cultures. Last summer I had traveled parts of Europe with my friends, and it was astonishing to see the difference between cultures. One thing that was noticed right off the bat was that the Europeans start their week on a Monday and it ends on Sunday. While in the U.S. we start our week on Sunday and it goes to Saturday. • 29. Women In Macbeth And Of Mice And Men How are women presented in Macbeth Of Mice Men? Shakespeare and Steinbeck present their female characters in a misogynistic light. To compare the respective pieces we must consider several factors, which acted as a driving force towards the portrayal of the female characters in their respective texts. Shakespeare presents Lady Macbeth as a character who steers away from the stereotypical characteristics of women derived by the societal norms of an Elizabethan society. These three characteristics include: being a faithful and practicing Christian, being submissive to one s husband, and a good caretaker. In Macbeth, the stereotypical roles are reversed, so Lady Macbeth performs the dominating role in the relationship. To take her nurturing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Curley s wife clearly states I don t like Curley he aint a nice fellow. Lady Macbeth however deeply expresses her love for Macbeth and uses this love and fondness for each other to attain their simultaneous goals. On the other hand it could be argued that Lady Macbeth is completely guided by her desire to gain self profit like Curley s wife. Macbeth initially remains thoughtful by saying I have no spur to prick the sides of my intent, but only vaulting ambition . Later on in the text Macbeth comes to rejecting the idea Lady Macbeth taunts his masculinity and plays on his weak state of mind to make him accept the idea of regicide. So she may not be as loyal as she poses to be. Although fidelity is a reasonably big factor it does not outweigh how evil Shakespeare has portrayed Lady Macbeth, as she wants to commit murder. Her ambition is telling us that Shakespeare thinks women are evil and breaking the rules results in death and likewise with Steinbeck. So to summarize, the ambitions themselves are too different to be directly compared, but it is the causes, effects and portrayal of ambition that allow one to examine the difference between the two pieces. In Of Mice and Men, ambition can never be achieved; it is just a dream, which one strives for. In Macbeth, ambition can be achieved but never enjoyed, as Shakespeare never allows his characters to stop and enjoy their achievement. Finally we can conclude that Shakespeare s writing is more against the opposite sex as he presents Lady Macbeth as immoral since she coaxed Macbeth to commit murder. Whereas Curley s Wife isn t as moral to a certain extent depending on the ambiguous line of morality and whether adultery was considered immoral to a 1930 s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
