The Left Hand Of Darkness Feminist Essay
Science fiction plays an important part in feminism texts. According toTom Moylanпј€1986
пј‰
science fiction can serve as a playground for feminist considerations and criticism of gender,
sexuality, social roles and oppression, reproduction, patriarchy, and much more(p.30). Le Guin
agrees with this definition and states that pulling back from reality in order to see it better, is
perhaps the essential gesture of science fiction. Butler (2004) has the similar idea that fantasy is
what allows us to imagine ourselves and others otherwise (p.28). Two science fiction feminist
texts The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin and The Passion of New Eve by Angela
Carter both deal with genderidentity and its performativity with the engagement of... Show more

The leading character Simone de Beauvoir initiated one is not born but rather becomes a woman .
Based on the reading of de Beauvoir, Butler further argues a new concept that gender subsumes
sex which indicates that biological sex is also socially constructed . Butler(1986) forms her new
idea that becomes a woman is a process of constructing ourselves and it is a purpositive and
apropiative set of acts, the acquisition of a skill . For Butler (1990), women can never be and
gender is never a noun but a set of free floating attributes. Hence, gender is proved to be
performative(p.18 24). Her idea co relates with Nietzsche s view of gender that there is no gender
identity behind the expression of gender; that identity is performatively constituted by the
expression of one s gender(Butler, 1990, p.24 25). It seems to Butler that de Beauvoir defines
gender ambiguously because she misses the performative character of gender. Butler claims that
people need to understand the term woman as the site of permanent openness and resignifiability ,
which is different from de Beauvoir s view that women are subjects in

Operation Pied Piper Essay
Leave Hitler to me, sonny you ought to be out of London. A very prevalent slogan which echoed
across Britain back in World War II referencing Operation Pied Piper, an evacuation of several
million children, that took place early September 1939 through March 1946. All throughout the
evacuation, children as young as 2 years old were labeled like luggage, separated from their loved
ones, commonly carried a single suitcase which contained their meager possessions, a gas mask,
and, for some, a limitless amount of frightful tears. The words I ll have that one became engraved in
the memories of numerous children, referring to the common phrase used by their forthcoming
guardians when going through the selection process. Although the majority... Show more content on

At the time, she lived in Leigh on Sea 60 miles across the Channel from occupied France. When
the day came to be evacuated, she packed her meager belongings a single change of clothes, a

around her neck, in the case she got lost. Pam boarded a train to Derbyshire, heading for
Charbury once arrived, she was taken to the village school, and given a small ration of food. She
was naturally an anxious and introverted child to begin with, however the humiliating selection
process, brought up feelings of being unwanted and unloved, which unfortunately stuck with her
in later life. The children all formerly instructed to stand up and turn around for the locals were
examined and prodded, similar to no more than cattle. The first to be chosen were those who
had either been attractive or those who appeared to be fully capable of either housekeeping or
farm work. Pam and her sister were among the last four to be chosen, due to the fact that neither
of them had attained either of the desired and preferred qualities. Chosen by the Simpsons, Pam
and her sister lived with a stern and religious couple Joe worked hard as a miner, who started
gaining experience for this particular profession at the young age of 12 and Cissy worked as an
insensitive and, at times, callous caretaker. Nevertheless, Pam adored being able to live in the
countryside and regularly watching the wonders of nature and wildlife provided by a nearby farm
such wonders were seldom ever seen in the small town where she initially lived. Regardless of those
very few and far between moments of bliss and contentment, they unfortunately experienced an

Technological Advances In Australia Essay
Over the past century we have seen a number of technological achievements that have improved the
living standards in Australia. With inventions ranging from the television to the affordable car, all
these achievements have come together to make the modern country Australia which many call the
lucky country . There are three main technological advancements that were pivotal during post
WW2 in making the country that we know today.
The development of an affordable car in the early 1950s changed the way people lived their lives
by making private travel faster and more efficient. For once people were no longer limited to the
place where they lived, people who lived in remote areas of Australia were less isolated with the
car increasing their connectedness with urban areas in Australia. Employment opportunities
increased for people who owned a car because they were no longer limited to jobs within their
local area, also having benefits to the economy by decreasing times from going to and from work.
People were also able to go on holidays to further places for cheaper prices which increased the
amount of business in retail because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Themes Of Destino And Self Portrait As A Tehuana
Destino and Self Portrait as a Tehuana: Love s Journey Art is unappreciated today as people live
on their phones and sift through their Twitter feed, rather than visiting a local museum or art
gallery. The word art is very relative as it can represent just about anything ranging from a
complex realistic painting, to a simple red sheet of canvas, to a hit song on the radio. For
millennia, art has been used to convey the messages people want heard. The short film, Destino,
by Salvador Dali and Walt Disney, as well as the painting, Self Portrait as a Tehuana, by Frida
Khalo both exhibit the idea that love comes with difficulties and can be painful at times, but can
work itself out as two people move through their own lives. Destino tells a love story. One scene
in particular shows that the woman cares about the man, that he is on her mind. The woman
comes across a statue of a man. She gets very close to it, with her face nearly touching the statue
s, the woman then pulls away, and the face of the statue melts off. She is in shock, with her
hands on her cheeks. Her expression is grim, and there is a sad look in her eyes. Her reaction to
the man disappearing shows that she cares about him, whoever it was a statue of, and that he was
on her mind. Likewise, in the painting, Self Portrait as a Tehuana by Frida Kahlo, the same idea is
portrayed. In the portrait, Diego Riverais pictured on Frida Kahlo s forehead, symbolizing that he
is on her mind. Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo were married, and had their ups and downs.
Despite their struggles, Kahlo did not stop loving Rivera, with him always being on her mind.
Both pieces of art, the film Destino and the Self Portrait as a Tehuana both show that the male in
the relationship is on the female s mind. At a point in the film, the idea that the love between the
man and the woman will not last is displayed when the two are running toward each other and the
sand sinks. Huge rocks penetrate the ground and the two are separated by the giant walls in front
of them. This symbolizes the misfortune of their love as it appears unattainable due to the obstacles
in their wake. Similarly, in Kahlo s painting, the canvas is severely cracked, stemming from the
center of the

The Real Estate Bubble Crisis
From the late 1990 s to mid 2000 s the United States experienced an unprecedented run up of real
estate prices across the country that reached a peaked in 2006, in some areas up to an eighty
percent increase. After the increase in prices, there was a sudden collapse of real estate prices in
2008, brought on by a surge in foreclosures, and an increasing inventory of housing.1 Foreclosure
increases came from an unprecedented rise in mortgages called, subprime mortgages. These risky
subprime mortgages, and the cottage industry within the financial sector that profited from them,
created an overly leveraged and over exposed finance industry that created a massive recession
when the bubble popped. In this essay, we will look into the many... Show more content on

Foreign investors starving for fixed income securities that also had returns better than government
securities, decided to invest in mortgage back securities provided by Fannie Mae and Freddie
Mac. In order to take advantage of the savings glut Wall Street firms began to package many of
these sub prime mortgages together and create what was known as a mortgage backed security.1
A mortgage backed security, was an asset backed security that was secured by a collection of
upwards a several hundred mortgages. The issue was the mortgage back securities provided by
Fannie, Freddie, and investment banks were given good ratings by rating agencies such as
Standard and Poor s and Moody s, even though these assets were toxic. They gave the mortgage
back securities good ratings, because their risk assessment models solely used previous housing
data, and did not include any possibility of a fall in housing prices.3 As a result, overseas
investors believed they were getting secure assets with above average returns, but instead they
were getting very toxic assets instead. So the interest in these mortgage back securities continued
the flood of savings, continuing the suppression of interest rates and maintained the status quo.2
Banks lent out these sub prime mortgages at a prolific rate because even if the borrower
foreclosed, banks were still able to make a profit, as they resold a higher priced house. Another
form of easy credit came from the historically low short term rates

Law And Grace In The Bible And Aesop s Fables
In today s world people make a common mistake by making comparisons with the Bible and
Aesop s Fables. In the Bible it is important to which is emphasized more, law or grace. It is just
as important to do the same in Aesop s Fables. Very often a mistake is easily made in reading
Jesus s Parables. Understanding the emphasis of law and grace in both the Bibleand Aesop s Fables
and realizing mistakes we make with reading Jesuss parables can help with reading the parables
Both law and grace are emphasized in the Bible. The Apostle Paul writes in his book of Romans,
For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law
comes knowledge of sin. In this passage the the Apostle Paul saying that no one can be saved
from following God s law. His thoughtful reasoning is that God only made the law because of
our constant sinning. In the book of Matthew, Jesus states, for this is my blood of the covenant,
which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. Jesus tells that his blood is the
fulfillment of the covenant God made with man. What Jesus is saying because of the sacrifice
anyone who believes in him will be forgiven. In the Bible it states that no one can follow the law
given by God because it originated from sin but those who believes in Christ are saved because of
the grace given by God.
In Aesop s Fables however law is more emphasized than grace in the silly stories. In The Ants and
the Grasshopper when the Grasshopper

Graffiti In The United States
Since the late 1980s, various public and private sector actors in the United States who do not write
graffiti have practiced anonymity and sought fame to suppress and promote graffiti. Most non
writing public sector actors have cracked down on graffiti as a criminal act that blights urban
surfaces, while, in response, many non writing private sector actors have promoted graffiti as a
profitable consumer good and art form. In the public sector, policeofficers and politicians in New
York and then Chicago and Denver have prosecuted graffiti as the illegal vandalism of property
walls and other surfaces; over time, police officers have learned to adapt plainclothes dress to patrol
environments, capture writers, and destroy graffiti. In the private... Show more content on

Mayors David Dinkins and Rudolph Giuliani expanded the NYPD according to the popular Broken
Windows theory, which states that neighborhoods suffer from high crimerates because of
environmental disorder, namely broken windows and defaced buildings. At this time, the police

everything that the Vandal Squad used, from exchanging .38 guns for 9mm automatic weapons to
installing computers that officers used to research and track writing activity citywide. With strong

But pretty much everything eats sheep and when the wolves where reintroduction only a few
were killed. But sadly more than a few sheep parishad. But based on facts the only reason wolf
attack or eat live stock and seep is because they are predator and prey scientifically known as apex
predator and primary consumers. But it isn t like they necessarily want to kill the sheep and
livestock it is just a natural instinct.
This all happened because yellowstone was named one of the many rehabilitation places where the
gray wolf species would recover after almost being whipt out entirely in the west of the
rockies. The wolves were brought to yellowstone from another part of the country. The
rehabilitation was called a success so the federal government made a ackt to tack them of the

Difference Between Eliza And Wilbur
I actually really enjoyed reading this novel. I loved the story of Eliza and Wilbur. I think that
this book was a very quick, easy read which is probably why I enjoyed it so much, however I also
liked how it laid out themes we discussed this semester in a very laid back way. I think it is very
sad how Wilbur and Eliza were sent away by their parents because of the differences they
possessed, which actually turned to be to their advantage as long as they stayed together. I think
that it is kind of an example of how people are capable of more than just we assume them to be,
even when it comes to medical disadvantages. One of the parts that stood out to me in the book
was whenever Eliza and Wilbur as kids would listen to their parents say basically

Control Over The Mind In George Orwell s 1984
Charles Darwin, founder of theory of evolution, once said, The highest possible stage in moral
culture is when we recognize that we ought to control our thoughts. If the highest point is control
over thoughts, then the lowest point must be when individuals have no control over their own
minds. This is evident through Ingsoc regime s philosophy on thoughtcontrol in Orwell s 1984
where people don t have freedom of thought. Another example which demonstrates how control
over mindleads to corruption of humanity itself is through Stanley s criticism on 1984 where he
illustrates that by controlling what is in minds of people government puts one in a stage of
unconsciousness which helps gov abuse people as mindless machine. Moreover, North Korea and
ISIS government s manipulation of children s mind proofs that these children loose morals as a
result of being dictated these thoughts and having it controlled by gov without even knowing it.

A Paper On The Genus Hominins Essay
This is going to be a paper on the genus Hominins. Hominins are early human ancestors the first
being Sahelanthropus Tchadensis and ends with Homo Sapiens. A specie is a group of similar
animals, or plants and in our case homo, paranthropus and australopithecus that can interbreed
between each other and have a direct connection in lineage.A genus is a grouping of alike and
related species that all share in many traits. It is an overview of species that are different enough
to be put in one group but similar to be put under an umbrella term. In this paper it will take about
the later half of the hominin genus, from Homo rudolfensis to Homo sapiens. We will be taking a
look into how they are connected if they are, why I did not connect others and the culture behind it
all.
Homo rudolfensis was found in 1986 by V.P. Alexeev . 2.4 1.8 Million years ago. Rudolfensis
maybe one of the first Homo Species and can maybe be traced back to kenyanthropus platyops.
Many believed at first glance Homo erectus was close to Homo habilis because they shared many
of the same features, were found near each other and dated to around the same time to 2.4 to 1.8
million years ago for habilis 2.3 to 1.5 million years ago for rudolfensis. Both are put under scrutiny
because many believe that due to the case of them having longer faces and bigger molars that they
are from Australopithecus and should be placed with them.Making them an australopithecus would
mean that it had the largest brain

Crash Of The Century Anthropology
A primary source that I found that relates with our course theme of horror and my concentration
of the unknown and unexpected is a documentary called Crash of the Century. This documentary
was created by Discovery World based on a true story. This documentary covers the unknown
line of events that led up to the fatal collision of two fully loaded Boeing 747s. On March 27,
1977, a KLM 747 and a Pan Am 747 were on route to the Gran Canaria International Airport when
unexpected calls were made by Canary Island Separatists that there were bombs at the airport.
Authorities closed down Gran Canaria International Airport and had to divert all flights to a
small airport in Los Rodeos. In total 5 large aircrafts were diverted to this small regional airport
that couldn t easily accommodate the aircrafts. Eventually after almost 4 hours from the original
diversion, the KLM was cleared to go the full length of a runway and do a 180В° turn. The Pan
Am flight was instructed to follow the KLM but take the 3rd exit off the runway to their left. The
Pan Am passed the 3rd exit off the runway and the KLM began taking off without proper
clearance. Nobody that day could ve predicted that the effects of an airport closing due to a bomb
threat would cause the horrific disaster of two Boeing 747s to collide and create the worst disaster
in aviation history.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

To What Extent Does Charlemagne Deserve The Title The Great
Who is Charlemagne The Great ? Charlemagne was born in 712 AD to Pepin the Short King of
the Franks. Growing up Charles was Christian and followed Christian beliefs. Charles split his rule
of the franks with his brother after his father s death. After his brother had died he had full control
of the Franks. He was popular among his people, not because of his leadership, but his humility.
He would talk to everyone whether a peasant or held a high power. He ruled as the Frank king for
26 years before becoming Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. The Pope at this time, Pope Leo,
crowned CharlemagneEmperor of the Holy Roman Empire. In his lifetime, he ruled for 46 years.

The Internet And Its Impact On Our Lives Essay
According to History.com, in 1965, ARPAnet, also known today as the Internet, was invented for
military purposes. However, Tim Berners Lee had a different intention for ARPAnet. He invented
the worldwide web where information was accessible for anyone.
Centuries ago, to impart knowledge or information from the past and pass it from one person to
another, books were created. To obtain it, they had to go to a library, read tons of books about a
certain topic, jotted down and remembered the details they need. Today, all you need is an internet
access and you could have an enormous amount of data at your fingertips in an object that was
manufactured with the same size as a brick. Libraries were mainly used to obtain a physical
evidence of a documentation needed for research, studies, papers or projects. As stated in
History.com, for 56 years, the Internet had evolved. It became an ultimate tool in our daily
lives. However, nothing comes without a price. Nicholas Carr, an author of the article Is Google
Making Us Stupid? , published in The Atlantic as to how the Internet, specifically google, is
changing the way we read and the way we interact with reading materials. On the other hand, John
Battelle, an author, and a journalist, wrote a polemical article entitled Google: Making Nick Carr,
But It s Made This Guy Smarter published his response to Carr in his own blog. Battelle said that

Song of Myself by Walt Whitman
I celebrate myself, and sing myself / and what I shall assume you shall assume (Whitman 1 2).
These lines not only open up the beginning of one the best poems of the American Romantic period,
but they also represent a prominent theme of one of this period s best poet, Walt Whitman. In Walt
Whitman s Song of Myself, Whitman deals with his time period s most prominent theme of
democracy. Whitman tells readers that they must not only observe the democratic life but they
must become one with it. As Whitman states, For every atom belonging to me as good belongs
to you (3). Democracy provides a connection with all people. It is as if Joseph Stella felt this
connection and decided to depict it in his collection of paintings entitled Americans in the Rough.
The individual is of no greater or lesser worth than anyone else. Beatrice Marovich states that, It is
a song for fellow Americans, about the American body politic (349). An analysis of Song of Myself
portrays that understanding and becoming one with democracy through political collectivity
essentially sets the stage for the American democratic self. Joseph Stella does a great job of
interpreting and depicting Whitman s ideals of democracy through his illustrations representing
every facet of an American democratic life.
Joseph Stella is regarded is one of America s great artist of today. With his unique cultural and
personal characteristics he not only enriched the American heritage but made a significant and

Non Systemic Testimonial Injustice By Miranda Fricker
Non systemic Testimonial Injustice In Testimonial Injustice by Miranda Fricker, she identifies that
there are systemic testimonial injustices and they relate to a common prejudice towards the
speaker. Fricker uses the term testimonial injustice, which is an injustice to someone whom is
unjustly perceived by others to have less knowledge than he/she actually has. An example of a
systemic testimonial injustice would be the accent of a speaker, causing the speaker to receive a
credibility deficit. The speaker is wronged in his/her knowledge as a result of the prejudice
employed against him/her. However, Fricker did not include an exhaustive enough list of
testimonial injustices. More specifically, I argue that Fricker overlooked a... Show more content on

An example of a credibility deficit would be a professor at a university receiving less credibility
and respect of his knowledge due to his accent. His accent could lead the students to believe he
isn t capable to be someone who holds much knowledge. The students doing so wrongs the
professor, and he is receiving testimonial injustice. This type of testimonial injustice is systemic
and not justified as the professor is assumed to have this job because he is properly qualified for
the position. This example is systemic because it contains a connection with a common
prejudice that occurs often in society. People with accents often face prejudice and receive a
credibility deficit as a result. According to Fricker, testimonial injustices occur when identity
power is in play. Identity power is whenever there is an operation of power with shared concepts of
social identities. An example Fricker uses of active identity power is a man silencing a woman

Persuasive Essay On Space Mountain
It was our first trip to Disney World, and we were visiting what I thought, was the scariest ride in
the world. I thought that certain ride was scary, because ever since I was five I would always
throw up on the roller coasters, or even car rides. I hated roller coasters ever since I threw up. I
thought to myself, This is Disney World we re talking about, I have to go on this ride, I need
this. I promised myself I would go on every single ride here. I will get over this fear. After that
thought I looked at my dad, as he was already planning on going on this ride. The ride was called
Space Mountain, I was told that people with motion sickness shouldn t go on the ride, but that
won t stop me. I ve also been told it is a pretty cool and fun ride, so that is another reason why I m
going on Space Mountain. Daddy, I told him. I wanna go on Space Mountain. I felt so confident
in that one moment of my life. My mom gives me a look. Peanut, you shouldn t go on that ride,
you will get sick and puke. She says. I look back at my mom then my dad. My dad whispers
something into her ear as my mom turns to me and hands me a doggie bag.
Use this just in case you puke. She says. Have fun sweetie, my mom says softly. My dad takes my
hand and tells me he is proud of me, he leads me to Space Mountain.
As soon as I looked up, I felt sick, the structure and ride was so big. I didn t know that I could do
it, but I had to, I couldn t chicken out in front my Dad. After all I already told him I would go. We
walked into Space Mountain, there were lights everywhere we looked. I started to jump up and
down, I started to get excited for once about a roller coaster, I felt so proud of myself, I would
actually get a chance to ride a roller coaster again! I felt scared, and I also felt so happy and proud
of myself at the same time. My Mom and brother chickened out on going, so I felt so alive, and
mature to be riding such a big ride. I looked at the line, there were no people, we were early! Come
on Daddy, there are more people coming behind us! Behind me and my dad, were a big group of
people walking in, we wanted first in front of the, so I ran and dashed through the aisle, the lights

White House Lawn
If you re wondering why the White House lawn looks particularly lovely this week, the answer
lies behind the hard work of an 11 year old boy. That s right whether you believe it or not,
President Donald Trump let Frank Giaccio, a grade six student and budding entrepreneur, mow
the White House lawn. Talk about working with high profile clients... Curious how the young
businessman got Trump and the White House lawn on his resume? How d he get the gig? How
on earth did an 11 year old boy land the all time gig of mowing the White House lawn? The
answer s pretty simple: he wrote Trump a letter. In the letter, Frank shared his admiration for
Trump as both the President and a business tycoon. He then goes over the details of the business he s

What did Trump think? While Frank spent most of his morning getting the White House lawn
in tip top shape, President Trump was getting ready to take a peek at the 11 year old s efforts. As
Frank made his way through the Rose Garden, he was so hard at work he didn t even notice the
President was standing right next to him taking a look at his lawn care duties. That s the real
future of the country right there we re lucky, Trump said. Maybe he ll be President someday.
Trump must have been impressed, because shortly after the lawn was finished he congratulated
Frank and gave him a well deserved high five. The press loves it! Whether it s a kind hearted
move from Trump or a smart tactic for some free White House lawn care, it s pretty clear the
press loved Frank s story. At a press conference later that afternoon, Frank joined press secretary
Sarah Sanders, taking the time to thank his father, Sanders, and of course, Donald Trump for the
once in a lifetime experience. When reporters asked Frank if he would consider mowing their
lawns, Sanders made a quick integration, joking that he could charge double because he s now part

A Comparison Of Love In Great Expectations
The Lovely and the Loveless
People as well as writers often mistake infatuation with love. As a result, love at first sight is a
common trope in film and literature. Love is something that takes time and effort; people must
choose to put in the care and understanding into a relationship for it to be considered love. While
the two are similar, infatuation is attraction to someone based on their appearance; love is mutual
affection and the act of looking beyond someone s problems and flaws. In Great Expectations by
Charles Dickens, the main characters all indulge in infatuation, but never love. Because Pip and
Estella s lives are built off of appearances rather than character, they cannot form healthy
relationships and thus cannot experience true love.
Because Pip is obsessed with Estella s beauty and treats her as an object, he can never love her
while he is forcing himself to love someone who will only hurt him. To illustrate, when Pip is
out walking by the piers with Joe, he begins to think of Miss Havisham, an eccentric, miserable
old woman, and Estella, a beautiful but cold hearted girl, pondering to himself, It was pleasant
and quiet... whenever I watched the vessels standing out to sea with their white sails spread, I
somehow thought of Miss Havisham and Estella; whenever the light struck aslant, afar off, upon
a cloud or sail or green hill or waterline, it was just the same (124; ch 15). This reveals how Pip is
no longer able to think about beautiful objects without thinking of Estella. He is connecting
symbols of purity and peacefulness to the ever chaotic and manipulative Miss Havisham and
Estella. Because he idealizes them and puts them on a pedestal, he is unable to care about them as
equals or as human beings. In addition, while Pip is waiting with Joe by the door for Mrs. Joe to
come home, he looked at the stars, and considered how awful it would be for a man to turn his
face up to them as he froze to death, and see no help or pity in all the glittering multitude (59; ch
7); this illustrates how Pip views the stars the same way he views Estella: as cold and pitiless.
While they are beautiful, they are completely out of reach. And despite the fact that stars, by nature,
are fiery and warm,

Most Historians Believe That Mesopotamia
Most historians believe that Mesopotamia, meaning between the rivers in Ancient Greek, is the
oldest urban civilization in history. Life in Mesopotamia is thought to have begun over 6000 years
ago. Mesopotamia is nick named The Cradle of Civilization because of its development of
inventions, culture, class structure, and judicial system.
What was Mesopotamia? Mesopotamia is believed to be the first urban civilization in the history of
the Earth. Mesopotamia was the delta between two rivers which were the Tigris and the Euphratesi.
Many different peoples lived in Mesopotamia, those were the Sumerians, Akkadiams, Babylonians,
the Kassites and Hittites, and the Assyriansii. Out of those, the Sumerians lived in Mesopotamia
the longest. Mesopotamia was located in the best part of the world to get its contributions to
modern society spread out. Mesopotamia was ultimately ended by the Persians in 539 B.C.E. after
taking over Babyloniii.
What were Mesopotamia s inventions? People in Mesopotamia developed inventions that are very
important to human life today. The most important invention to modern civilization that the
Mesopotamians made is the wheeliv. In fact it was the Sumerians that originally made the wheel.
Without the wheel we would not have as effective transportation of goods, letters, and people. We
also would not have things like generators, motors, effective agriculture, etc. We would basically
still be walking or riding on horseback everywhere, maybe we would

Literary Devices In War
What was the intended message and intended audience of both texts? What evidence tells you
this? In both texts, an anti war message is present and they are both directed to everyone. In War
, the pacifistic, anti war message was spread thin to a plethora of lines throughout the song
however it was still extremely influential and cogent. This is evident through the hook of the
song, War! What is it good for? Absolutely nothing! , and the verses. Out of all the inspiring
verses in the song, I deem Oh, war, I despise Cause it means destruction of innocent lives War
means tears to thousands of mothers eyes When their sons go to fight And lose their lives as the

the people who know about the sinking of the ship, do they really know why they died? The
reason why the shipmates died goes a lot deeper than just the ship sinking. There are many factors
that went into why the shipmates died at midnight on July 30, 1945. A major factor in why the
shipmates died was the ship s conditions, the lack of protection, and the lack of guidance. The USS
Indianapolis did not have superior ventilation. Since the ship had bad quality ventilation, the crew

they have a similar subject matter. They both picture nature. Bierstadt s painting shows the
landscape of the Rocky Mountains, hence the name. Pictured are rolling valleys, rugged mountains,
and what looks like a civilization of Native Americans. On the other hand, Bradley s painting is an

Bierstadt uses gradient features of color in his painting. He has lighter colors in the back of his
painting and darker colors in the front. This allows the painting to be subtle and aid viewers in
realizing the subject matter. Bradley, unlike Bierstadt, uses variety in his work of art. His
painting is made up of high intensity. He uses vivid colors and even shapes to express the
subject matter. The different colors used catches the eyes of those who view it. The artists chose
excellent colors to go with their paintings. Interpret: Bierstadt s painting shows the Rocky
Mountains in the 1800 s. The beautiful scenery expresses how stunning the world was during that
time. There were waterfalls, tee pees, and sprouting trees. The Earth has been bruised and beaten.
The scenery illustrated in this painting is rare. However, Bradley s painting seems to show what
landscapes are like presently even if it was created in the late 1900 s. The construction, the
entertainment by the dancers express that Bradley believes that India is more of a tourist spot now.
It is not appreciated for its beauty anymore. People come to watch the traditional dances, not
participate. They come and go, they do not usually settle. But he does show a person shooting an

Apple s Iphone 5 Personal Evaluation
Apple s iPhone 5 Personal Evaluation Personal research and evaluations are excellent ways to
discover pertinent information about a product that a consumer wishes to purchase. In addition,
reviews come from multiple sources: experts or consumers, both play an important role to the
consumer and are thought to be valued resources. In fact, reviews and information are easier to
acquire due to the modern technology and increased use of the internet among consumers. Reviews
and research help consumers to decide whether or not they are going to purchase a specific

Sandhill
Sandhill occurs in the uplands on crests and ridges of gently rolling topography. Sandhill is
characterized by an open overstory of widely spaced longleaf pine (Pinus palustris), sparse
understory of fire suppressed deciduous scrub oaks and a diverse groundcover of grasses, forbs and
low growing shrubs. Soil is deep, excessively drained, marine deposited sand of the Lakeland
series. Rapid permeability allows for expeditious aquifer recharge with little to no runoff, however,
nutrients are easily leached, hence soils are generally infertile. In order to maintain open structure,

Compare And Contrast Federalist And Federalists
The ground of liberty is to be gained by inches, that we must be contented to secure what we can
get from time to time, and eternally press forward for what is yet to get. It takes time to persuade
men to do even what is for their own good, quoted by Thomas Jefferson on January 27, 1790.
Around this time there were two political parties that are talked about throughout this paper, The
Federalists and The Democratic Republican party. There were several problems occurring in the
United States of America around the 1790 s, due to the fact that George Washington resigned
from presidency and didn t choose to run for a third four year term. Around this time Washington
worried that the nation will split from political parties emerging trying to elect a new president
and vice president. There are two major political parties emerging, Federalist and the Democratic
Republican party, these two parties had differing views on The Constitution, ideal people,
government, and foreign policy position. These two parties do represent, and they do not
represent the Democratic Party and the Republican Party of today. Our government today follows
some of each sides views today. I think that it doesn t matter what kind of job you have or what
ethnicity you are to be president, unlike the Federalist and the Democratic Republican party. The
Government chooses bits and pieces of there ideal views, and that s how they run the government
today. I do favor parts of the Federalist Party, and the Democratic Republican Party today. I like
how the Democratic Republican Party had farmers as some of there people because today we don t
run off large scale manufacturing, and large scale manufacturing only, we use small farms to help
produce products for the whole entire world. Alexander Hamiltonheaded one these parties known
as the Federalists, he was followed by George Washington, John Adams, and Charles Pinckney.
Although Washington tried to stay neutral and not pick a side of the political parties he favored
the Federalists, because they were loyal to the government. Hamilton had views of wealthy, well
born aristocracy, based of their birth, wealth, and status as his people. Hamilton truly believed that
people are basically selfish, and

the Deep South. Poor Black women were the main focus of the experiments as well as disabled

Electric Cars On The Environment
The Effect of Electric Cars on the Environment
The Ford Model T, the world s first mass produced car. It was a breakthrough in transportation.
See, back then, everybody thought that we had unlimited fossil fuels such as gasoline. Then,
more recently, scientists discovered that we did indeed have limited resources, they also started
to notice the polluted emissions of cars. As the demand for more fuel efficient and more eco
friendly cars rose, car companies such as GM, Toyota, as well Mitsubishi invested millions in
developing fully electric cars. But, for this research, we will be using Tesla Motors as our model
standard. Electric cars are now more popular than ever and now they have been mass produced
long enough that we are now finally seeing their long term footprint on the environment, and the
results are surprising. Electric cars don t have an eco footprint as good as many people thought
due to how they are produced, how they get their electric power as well as their recyclability or
lack thereof.
Car companies such as Tesla market their cars as having Zero Emissions . That claim is only
partially true, and in some places, not true at all. Now, the cars don t have zero emissions because
zero emissions are only true in certain places: where most of the electricity comes from a mix of
sources such as the sun, wind or nuclear energy. Internal combustion engine car emissions only

the illegal immigration to the United States in October 2005, in which she argues that illegal
immigration is one of the serious issues like crime, poverty, and terrorism which demands wise
leaders who can solve this issue. She criticizes Tom Tancredo; a Republican congressional

Tucker does not just criticize Tancredo s argument, but she also attacks Tancredo himself. This ad

attack Tom Tancredo and compare him with Joseph McCarthy the infamous American politician of
the 1950 s who used his position as chairperson of the Committee on Government Operations to

The Purpose and Functioning of Vessel Traffic Services
Introduction The vessel traffic services (VTS) that help keep the seas safe and orderly is an
interesting grouping of ideas, procedures and equipment. The purpose of this essay is to describe
the VTS and how it incorporates its fundamental concepts within its actions. The essay will first
describe the technical equipment that is usually associated with VTS. Next, this writing will
discuss the specific services that VTS uses in its methods and principles. The following section
will discuss the training and qualifications that are mandated with most VTS systems. Finally a
case study of an accident associated with VTS will be discussed to highlight the importance of
this base of knowledge and its practical applicability to real world situations. Purpose of the VTS
According to the IALA at its simplest, the main objectives of a VTS are to: и·Ї aid the mariner in
the safe use of navigable waterways; и·Ї afford unhindered access to pursue commercial and leisure

Social marketing can also mean macro social marketing (Kennedy Parsons, 2011). The legal and
political impact that led by the government in social marketing have a huge impact on Cochlear s
marketing as the legal and political factors have threatens Cochlear s pricing strategies and hence
positioning in China. Government can use or make laws to make changes and protection of their
own country, laws can influence different areas, such as education, marketing, research, funding
and taxation, in order to take advantage and protect local businesses. Different countries have
different types of political and legal aspect, so Cochlear need to be careful on its action and not to
make any problems in other countries. For example, in China, Cochlear will be facing many
competitions from the local businesses and manufacturers, as the government in China does not
want Cochlear has the monopoly profit and want to protect their local businesses. Therefore,
Cochlear need to lower their pricing to stay competitive with the local companies. The main goals
for the Chinese government to do this are to support local research, development, and
manufacturing and also make cochlear implants cheaper and more accessible (Einhorn Khan,

H. H Holmes Accomplishments
Henry Howard Mudgett, better known as H.H Holmes, to most is just a ghost story. He is
nothing more than a black mark on America s extensive history, a part of history that is skipped
over more often than not. However, H.H Holmes was an important part of United States history.
Without the horrors of H.H Holmes, we would not have as strong of a law enforcement as we do
today. H.H Holmes helped open a new world of research to psychologists and without him,
psychologists would not have as much knowledge of the impacts of poor mental health as they do
today. Because of H.H Holmes, the government would not know how to punish crimes of such high
degree, or how to contribute certain factors such as mental illness for such crimes. H.H Holmes

He grew up secluded with his two brothers, Henry and Arthur, and his sister Ellen. He also grew
up with his parents who were devout Methodists. A common factor about serial killers is that
they usually grew up in a strictly religious household. His home life was hard because of his
mentally and physically abusive parents, especially his father. Researchers have found out that
his father used tactics such as prolonged isolation and even food deprivation. Furthermore, his
father reportedly held kerosene soaked rags over Holmes and the other children s mouths to quiet
them when they cried. (Concordia University). A child s relationship with their parents is crucial
in their development. Psychologists have researched this specific topic for years and drew the
conclusion that, Without the safety net of a secure attachment relationship, children grow up to
become adults who struggle with feelings of low self worth and challenges with emotional
regulation. They also have an increased risk of developing depression and anxiety. (How

for being smarter than the rest of the class and having no friends. His most notable bullying

My Learning Styles Are Kinesthetic And Visual Essay

Analysis Paper #1
1.My learning styles are kinesthetic and visual. When I learn to do something, I always skip the
instruction, tending to jump right in and try it. In terms of Mutual Intelligence, I scored 3.57 in
Nature, 3.43 in Self, and 3.14 Musical. The MI score nearly mirrors who I am, except the language
and kinesthetic scores. It s true that I m not good at math and logical problems, but I do enjoy new
languages. I m bilingual now and I want to be a trilingual in the future. Therefore, I believe that
my score in linguistic and kinesthetic should be higher. There are some statements in the
Assessment results which I find accurate about me. For instance, Take photographs of what you
find on your hike , You like working on projects on your own , and You enjoy humming or
singing along with music. My Keirsey Score is INFP which means my learning score is NF. I m
not the type of person who logically plans to do everything. I prefer to be led by feelings. It s
also true that I m an introvert when I m around people who I don t feel comfortable with. Actually,
I change into another person when I m with my family and friends. It s interesting that my
boyfriend shares totally different traits in his Keirsey Score; he s an ISTJ. While I focus on
creativity and don t follow the plan, he tends to plan everything in advance. Sometimes, the

Analysis Of Ziggurat By Stephen O Connor
1st Paragraph: Symbolism in Ziggurat
In Stephen O Connor s Ziggurat, the author utilizes symbolism to portray a raw tale of life and
death s conflicting relationship. O Connor s usage of a mythological character, the Minotaur, and a
human, the new girl, creates a juxtaposing link that reveals the inevitability of death. Ziggurat
follows the Minotaur s life throughout the labyrinth where he meets the new girl. Through his harsh
characterization and foreseeable destruction of those around him, the Minotaur can be seen as a
personification of death. The Minotaur believes in the idea that we were created to be destroyed (O
Connor), a hint at the inescapability of the death that the Minotaur symbolizes. Subsequently, the

This story, with its lack of rhyme structure and rhythm, is similar to a prose poem. The sharp and
repetitive sentence structure makes the list of instructions seem as if they are being given in one
endless dialogue. The seemingly infinite commands create a suffocating sense of obligation for the
daughter. By including questions in the mother s list of commands, the author makes it seem like
the mother is speaking in a stream of consciousness and is rattling off orders and advice to her
daughter. Soak salt fish overnight before you cook it; is it true that you sing benna in Sunday
school?; always eat your food in such a way that it won t turn someone else s stomach (Kincaid).
Simultaneously, it smothers the exchange between the daughter and mother, restricting the idea of
a real, two way conversation. Throughout the story, the daughter rarely speaks, only to protest
against her mother s claims, including the belief that the daughter will become a slut when she is
older. Her mother states, prevent yourself from looking like the slut I know you are so bent on
becoming (Kincaid) twice within the story, emphasizing the mother s accusatory words that
simultaneously assume the daughter is already on track to becoming a slut. Subsequently, the
daughter argues how she doesn t sing benna on Sundays at all (Kincaid) when harshly criticized by
her mother. The daughter s haste and sharp responses to her mother s brusque accusations suggest
that the daughter has already

Disadvantages Of Disaster Risk
Disaster risk indicates the possibility of adverse effects in the future. It originates from the
collaboration of social and environmental processes, from the mixture of natural hazards and the
vulnerabilities of exposed elements.
Due to increases in the exposure of persons and assets, the brutality of the impacts of disasters
depends strongly on the level of exposure and vulnerability in the affected area, and proof indicates
that risk has increased worldwide largely. For example, long term increases in economic losses
from weather and climate related disasters is caused by increasing exposure (IPCC 2012). There
have been limited decreases in vulnerability as a result of, for instance, better building standards and
compliance, but these reducing effects are geographically rough and there are many examples of
increased vulnerability, mostly in large urban centres and in developing countries. This has created
new risk and potential disaster losses mainly at the local and community level with the poor and
demoted, marginal populations, women and children, and those dependent on single sector
economies suspiciously affected.
Exposure:
Exposure refers to the portfolio of essentials in an area in which hazard events may occur. Later, if
population and economic resources were not located in potentially dangerous settings, there would
be no problem of disaster risk. Exposure is a required, but not enough, factor of risk. It is possible
to be exposed but not vulnerable (for

Public Policy Impact on an American Corporation Due to the differences in mankind, issues and
conflicts often occurred in history for a multiplicity of reasons and they still will occur in the
future. But to improve the quality of life for everybody and because we are all supposed to be
equal in some way, we definitely need to create laws, draw up guidelines and develop principles
that might solve upcoming issues or at least minimize the harm for the unprivileged and socially
disadvantaged part of people. That is why I am going to write about the American with Disabilities

The law is supposed to protect people within the United States who suffer from physical, visual, or
hearing impairments just as cognitive disabilities. The ADA act is divided into four titles dealing
with aspects of employment, state and local governments/transportation/public services, public
accommodations and telecommunications (Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, Americans with
Disabilities Act (ADA): Summary of Key Points , 2014). The first title of the ADA prohibits
discriminative practices in the working environment. It applies to state and local governments, to
legislative and judicial branches of the Federal Government, to employment agencies and labor
unions. That means that private employers or others of the above mentioned entities who have
more than 15 employees cannot oppress qualified occupation candidates and workers on the
premise of their handicap. This implies that it is illicit to get some information about an inability
amid the employment interview. The person who applies for a job can decide if he or she wants to
talk about an inability when requesting changes that will help in doing something. This
incorporates job restructuring and equipment modifications. If required, managers must roll out a
few improvements to empower the job candidate with an impairment to perform the crucial
elements of the employment (Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, Americans with Disabilities Act
(ADA): Summary of Key Points , 2014). Despite everything,

Foreign Exchange Market Essay
Introduction Any time someone travels to a foreign country, chances are they needed to
exchange their money, and in doing so, participated in ForEx trading. For many first time traders
the Foreign Exchange market can seem very confusing. ForEx is short for Foreign Exchange, it
is the market in which people can exchange currencies from all over the world (Peters, J. 2012).
When someone trades on the foreign exchange market, they are buying once currency and selling
another. Buying and selling occurs at the same time in the ForEx market, which is why currencies
are always quoted in pairs (Peters, J. 2012). Various factors such as economics and geopolitics

case is called the euro, is considered the base currency. The second currency listed in the pair is
called the counter currency. The most commonly traded pairs are called the majors, and these
include EUR/USD, USD/JPY, GPD/USD, USD/CHF, AUD/USD, and USD/CAD (Kritzer, A.
2012). Notice that the US dollar is always listed as one of the currencies in a major pair. The
major pairs make up a large portion of the ForEx market, and as a result, have high liquidity
(Kritzer, A. 2012). In addition to the major pairs, there is also something called crosses (Kritzer,
A. 2012). Cross pairs do not contain the US dollar as a currency, but contain other major
currencies, For example the Euro and the Swiss Franc EUR/CHF. The last type of pair traded on
the ForEx market is the exotics. Exotics are pairs that have one major currency, and another that is
from an emerging market, such as the Singapore dollar SGD or South African rand ZAR (Kritzer,

things can be a little tricky. Unlike the US and most of Europe, there is no dominant currency in

Hollywood Rape
This culture isn t just present behind the scenes in Hollywood. More and more people are coming
out with their #MeToo stories, after the events with Harvey Weinstein. Many women and men
began sharing about how they were assaulted or harassed sexually. Some people do not feel
comfortable telling these traumatic events to the World Wide Web. In 2013, there were 309
reported forcible rapes in Broward County. But, it is unknown how many total there were. So many
victims do not report their attacker. Many victims of rape, sexual assault, and sexaul harrasment are
attacked before the age of 18, according to Broward Human Resources website. That mean they are
students in high school and middle school. Preparation for these cases can be teachers, coaches,

When stories of rape, assault, or harassment come into the light, a lot of blame is placed on the
victim. People often say that she was probably dressed provocatively. Some victims respond to this
by posting pictures of what they were wearing. Most of the time, they outfit is not inappropriate,
especially if they are middle school or high school students. Another excuse is that boys will be
boys.
To me, rape culture means that society accepts the fact that sexual harassment, like catcalling and
other kinds of stuff, is just a part of it, said sophomore Naomi Rosenberg. Boys can still be
sexually assaulted, but usually they are the ones not being accountable for what they do to girls.
People just say boys will be boys and are done with it.
Putting all the blame on the victim could be considered unfair. For the most part the offender
continues living, with barely any charges be pressed against them. Victims are being held
accountable for actions done to them. They did not give the other person consent, their personal
space was penetrated, and they were attacked. Victims have to live with that everyday of their life.
Yet, society still puts everything on

Analysis Of The Shawshank Redemption
Freedom comes with a price. It may be sacrificing one s life to defend their country or, in this
case, persevering through a series of difficult trials. The Shawshank Redemption, directed by
Frank Darabont, opens with Andy Dufresne being convicted of murdering his wife and her lover
and sent to Shawshank State Penitentiary where he befriends fellow inmate Ellis Red Redding.
Since Andy had experience as a banker, the warden uses him to launder money for him under an

How The Huns Affected Rome
On the year of 370, the Huns arrived in what is now called Eastern Europe, they pushed the tribes
called The Vandals and The Visigoths out of Eastern Europe, therefore these two tribes needed a
new home. In 376 the Visigoths crossed the Danube river, a boundary of the Roman empire, and
moved southward. The Visigoths then beat the Romans at the battle of Adrianople, two years later.
Which effected Rome a lot, because Rome already had a lot of enemies waiting to bring them
down, the Visigoths made a path for that. At the west, the Vandals crossed the Rhine river, another
boundary of Rome in 406. The Vandals were known for fighting every city they stumbled upon,
even if they won or lost, they kept going, that is what made them successful in their

Superego In Lord Of The Flies Essay
Frued s theory of the human psyche is that it is made up of three parts: the id, ego, and superego.
These three parts are represented in the realistic novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding. Set
on a tropical island during World War II, the novel begins when schools boys from Great Britain
are being flown to safety and their plane is shot down. No adults survive, and the boys are left to
govern themselves and get rescued. In the novel Jack represents the id, Piggy and Simon the
superego, and Ralph the ego.
In Lord of the Flies Jack represents the id. The id is the primitive and instinctive part of the
personality. Jack can most often time be seen making decisions based in on these two. One such
example is when [h]e [tries] to convey the compulsion to track down and kill that [is] ... Show more

Ralph is the character that represents the ego and he is in control of the boys in the beginning
of the book. He is elected chief of the island: Him with the shell. Ralph! Ralph! Let him be chief
with the trumpet thing. Ralph raised his hand for silence (22) and already has power over the
boys even right after he is chosen. He also is influenced by Simon, Piggy, and Jack. He listens to
the superego when Piggy tells him to blow the conch in the beginning and listens to the id when
he Ralph feasts with Jack and takes part in killing Simon. The reader is able to see that Ralph
relied on the superego when, at the end of the book, both Simon and Piggy are dead and he is
being chased, he asks himself What was the sensible thing to do? There was no Piggy to talk
sense (196). Ralph relies on others to help him make decisions and is influenced by what other
people say and do. He is also the one in control of the boys for most of the book. These are both
traits of the ego. These characters in the book all help represent the human

B. F. Skinner s Negative Impacts

reinforcement. Positive reinforcement, negative reinforcements and all forms of punishment
might not seem like a big deal, but they are used everywhere, in every situation even in our

Skinner s theories, like Eagle Bucks, strikes, and honor codes. Eagle Bucks are used as negative
and positive reinforcement the more points. We get more Eagle Bucks we earn and the harder
we work the less likely it is that we lose Eagle Bucks. If we mess around distract and talk to your

Comparison Of Swift s Robinson Defooe And Robinson Crusoe
Defoe s Robinson Crusoe and Swift s Gulliver s Travels are both novels which focus on the
nature of the middle man, whether this refers to social position, severity of feeling, or even
geographic location. One of the major points at which Swift most directly satirizes Defoe s work
concerns the underlying conventions of the these values, and their capacity to improve the lives
and the minds of those who hold them. Throughout Robinson Crusoe, the novel s protagonist
learns of the truth of the importance of holding to moderation; something which he learns through
suffering the consequences of his own rash actions. Crucial to this is the idea of pre destination,
providence, and of a rational order to the universe an order that only the middle class is able to
discover. If one considers Swift s work alongside the vision that is presented in Robinson Crusoe,
then it is clear that the former presents a satireof the very idea, central to Defoe s work, that such
events can be made comprehensible according to a schema of divine providence and conventional
morality. To understand Swift s satire, we must first understand how Gulliver s Travels and
Robinson Crusoe are similar, yet inherently different. The opening chapters of Robinson Crusoe
place the novel within the context of a providential moderation and a desire to refuse the natural
constraints of duty and familial obligation. This is made clear in the opening speech given to the
narrator by Crusoe s father, in

  • 2. The Left Hand Of Darkness Feminist Essay Science fiction plays an important part in feminism texts. According toTom Moylanпј€1986 пј‰ science fiction can serve as a playground for feminist considerations and criticism of gender, sexuality, social roles and oppression, reproduction, patriarchy, and much more(p.30). Le Guin agrees with this definition and states that pulling back from reality in order to see it better, is perhaps the essential gesture of science fiction. Butler (2004) has the similar idea that fantasy is what allows us to imagine ourselves and others otherwise (p.28). Two science fiction feminist texts The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin and The Passion of New Eve by Angela Carter both deal with genderidentity and its performativity with the engagement of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The leading character Simone de Beauvoir initiated one is not born but rather becomes a woman . Based on the reading of de Beauvoir, Butler further argues a new concept that gender subsumes sex which indicates that biological sex is also socially constructed . Butler(1986) forms her new idea that becomes a woman is a process of constructing ourselves and it is a purpositive and apropiative set of acts, the acquisition of a skill . For Butler (1990), women can never be and gender is never a noun but a set of free floating attributes. Hence, gender is proved to be performative(p.18 24). Her idea co relates with Nietzsche s view of gender that there is no gender identity behind the expression of gender; that identity is performatively constituted by the expression of one s gender(Butler, 1990, p.24 25). It seems to Butler that de Beauvoir defines gender ambiguously because she misses the performative character of gender. Butler claims that people need to understand the term woman as the site of permanent openness and resignifiability , which is different from de Beauvoir s view that women are subjects in ... • 3. Operation Pied Piper Essay Leave Hitler to me, sonny you ought to be out of London. A very prevalent slogan which echoed across Britain back in World War II referencing Operation Pied Piper, an evacuation of several million children, that took place early September 1939 through March 1946. All throughout the evacuation, children as young as 2 years old were labeled like luggage, separated from their loved ones, commonly carried a single suitcase which contained their meager possessions, a gas mask, and, for some, a limitless amount of frightful tears. The words I ll have that one became engraved in the memories of numerous children, referring to the common phrase used by their forthcoming guardians when going through the selection process. Although the majority... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At the time, she lived in Leigh on Sea 60 miles across the Channel from occupied France. When the day came to be evacuated, she packed her meager belongings a single change of clothes, a toothbrush and scarcely anything else in a sandbag, alongside her eldest sister, with a tag around her neck, in the case she got lost. Pam boarded a train to Derbyshire, heading for Charbury once arrived, she was taken to the village school, and given a small ration of food. She was naturally an anxious and introverted child to begin with, however the humiliating selection process, brought up feelings of being unwanted and unloved, which unfortunately stuck with her in later life. The children all formerly instructed to stand up and turn around for the locals were examined and prodded, similar to no more than cattle. The first to be chosen were those who had either been attractive or those who appeared to be fully capable of either housekeeping or farm work. Pam and her sister were among the last four to be chosen, due to the fact that neither of them had attained either of the desired and preferred qualities. Chosen by the Simpsons, Pam and her sister lived with a stern and religious couple Joe worked hard as a miner, who started gaining experience for this particular profession at the young age of 12 and Cissy worked as an insensitive and, at times, callous caretaker. Nevertheless, Pam adored being able to live in the countryside and regularly watching the wonders of nature and wildlife provided by a nearby farm such wonders were seldom ever seen in the small town where she initially lived. Regardless of those very few and far between moments of bliss and contentment, they unfortunately experienced an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Technological Advances In Australia Essay Over the past century we have seen a number of technological achievements that have improved the living standards in Australia. With inventions ranging from the television to the affordable car, all these achievements have come together to make the modern country Australia which many call the lucky country . There are three main technological advancements that were pivotal during post WW2 in making the country that we know today. The development of an affordable car in the early 1950s changed the way people lived their lives by making private travel faster and more efficient. For once people were no longer limited to the place where they lived, people who lived in remote areas of Australia were less isolated with the car increasing their connectedness with urban areas in Australia. Employment opportunities increased for people who owned a car because they were no longer limited to jobs within their local area, also having benefits to the economy by decreasing times from going to and from work. • 5. Themes Of Destino And Self Portrait As A Tehuana Destino and Self Portrait as a Tehuana: Love s Journey Art is unappreciated today as people live on their phones and sift through their Twitter feed, rather than visiting a local museum or art gallery. The word art is very relative as it can represent just about anything ranging from a complex realistic painting, to a simple red sheet of canvas, to a hit song on the radio. For millennia, art has been used to convey the messages people want heard. The short film, Destino, by Salvador Dali and Walt Disney, as well as the painting, Self Portrait as a Tehuana, by Frida Khalo both exhibit the idea that love comes with difficulties and can be painful at times, but can work itself out as two people move through their own lives. Destino tells a love story. One scene in particular shows that the woman cares about the man, that he is on her mind. The woman comes across a statue of a man. She gets very close to it, with her face nearly touching the statue s, the woman then pulls away, and the face of the statue melts off. She is in shock, with her hands on her cheeks. Her expression is grim, and there is a sad look in her eyes. Her reaction to the man disappearing shows that she cares about him, whoever it was a statue of, and that he was on her mind. Likewise, in the painting, Self Portrait as a Tehuana by Frida Kahlo, the same idea is portrayed. In the portrait, Diego Riverais pictured on Frida Kahlo s forehead, symbolizing that he is on her mind. Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo were married, and had their ups and downs. Despite their struggles, Kahlo did not stop loving Rivera, with him always being on her mind. Both pieces of art, the film Destino and the Self Portrait as a Tehuana both show that the male in the relationship is on the female s mind. At a point in the film, the idea that the love between the man and the woman will not last is displayed when the two are running toward each other and the sand sinks. Huge rocks penetrate the ground and the two are separated by the giant walls in front of them. This symbolizes the misfortune of their love as it appears unattainable due to the obstacles in their wake. Similarly, in Kahlo s painting, the canvas is severely cracked, stemming from the center of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. The Real Estate Bubble Crisis From the late 1990 s to mid 2000 s the United States experienced an unprecedented run up of real estate prices across the country that reached a peaked in 2006, in some areas up to an eighty percent increase. After the increase in prices, there was a sudden collapse of real estate prices in 2008, brought on by a surge in foreclosures, and an increasing inventory of housing.1 Foreclosure increases came from an unprecedented rise in mortgages called, subprime mortgages. These risky subprime mortgages, and the cottage industry within the financial sector that profited from them, created an overly leveraged and over exposed finance industry that created a massive recession when the bubble popped. In this essay, we will look into the many... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Foreign investors starving for fixed income securities that also had returns better than government securities, decided to invest in mortgage back securities provided by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. In order to take advantage of the savings glut Wall Street firms began to package many of these sub prime mortgages together and create what was known as a mortgage backed security.1 A mortgage backed security, was an asset backed security that was secured by a collection of upwards a several hundred mortgages. The issue was the mortgage back securities provided by Fannie, Freddie, and investment banks were given good ratings by rating agencies such as Standard and Poor s and Moody s, even though these assets were toxic. They gave the mortgage back securities good ratings, because their risk assessment models solely used previous housing data, and did not include any possibility of a fall in housing prices.3 As a result, overseas investors believed they were getting secure assets with above average returns, but instead they were getting very toxic assets instead. So the interest in these mortgage back securities continued the flood of savings, continuing the suppression of interest rates and maintained the status quo.2 Banks lent out these sub prime mortgages at a prolific rate because even if the borrower foreclosed, banks were still able to make a profit, as they resold a higher priced house. Another form of easy credit came from the historically low short term rates ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Law And Grace In The Bible And Aesop s Fables In today s world people make a common mistake by making comparisons with the Bible and Aesop s Fables. In the Bible it is important to which is emphasized more, law or grace. It is just as important to do the same in Aesop s Fables. Very often a mistake is easily made in reading Jesus s Parables. Understanding the emphasis of law and grace in both the Bibleand Aesop s Fables and realizing mistakes we make with reading Jesuss parables can help with reading the parables Both law and grace are emphasized in the Bible. The Apostle Paul writes in his book of Romans, For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin. In this passage the the Apostle Paul saying that no one can be saved from following God s law. His thoughtful reasoning is that God only made the law because of our constant sinning. In the book of Matthew, Jesus states, for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. Jesus tells that his blood is the fulfillment of the covenant God made with man. What Jesus is saying because of the sacrifice anyone who believes in him will be forgiven. In the Bible it states that no one can follow the law given by God because it originated from sin but those who believes in Christ are saved because of the grace given by God. In Aesop s Fables however law is more emphasized than grace in the silly stories. In The Ants and the Grasshopper when the Grasshopper ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Graffiti In The United States Since the late 1980s, various public and private sector actors in the United States who do not write graffiti have practiced anonymity and sought fame to suppress and promote graffiti. I think that this book was a very quick, easy read which is probably why I enjoyed it so much, however I also liked how it laid out themes we discussed this semester in a very laid back way. I think it is very sad how Wilbur and Eliza were sent away by their parents because of the differences they possessed, which actually turned to be to their advantage as long as they stayed together. I think that it is kind of an example of how people are capable of more than just we assume them to be, even when it comes to medical disadvantages. Control Over The Mind In George Orwell s 1984 Charles Darwin, founder of theory of evolution, once said, The highest possible stage in moral culture is when we recognize that we ought to control our thoughts. If the highest point is control over thoughts, then the lowest point must be when individuals have no control over their own minds. This is evident through Ingsoc regime s philosophy on thoughtcontrol in Orwell s 1984 where people don t have freedom of thought. Another example which demonstrates how control over mindleads to corruption of humanity itself is through Stanley s criticism on 1984 where he illustrates that by controlling what is in minds of people government puts one in a stage of unconsciousness which helps gov abuse people as mindless machine. Moreover, North Korea and ISIS government s manipulation of children s mind proofs that these children loose morals as a result of being dictated these thoughts and having it controlled by gov without even knowing it. A specie is a group of similar animals, or plants and in our case homo, paranthropus and australopithecus that can interbreed between each other and have a direct connection in lineage.A genus is a grouping of alike and related species that all share in many traits. It is an overview of species that are different enough to be put in one group but similar to be put under an umbrella term. In this paper it will take about the later half of the hominin genus, from Homo rudolfensis to Homo sapiens. We will be taking a look into how they are connected if they are, why I did not connect others and the culture behind it all. Homo rudolfensis was found in 1986 by V.P. Alexeev . 2.4 1.8 Million years ago. Rudolfensis maybe one of the first Homo Species and can maybe be traced back to kenyanthropus platyops. Many believed at first glance Homo erectus was close to Homo habilis because they shared many of the same features, were found near each other and dated to around the same time to 2.4 to 1.8 million years ago for habilis 2.3 to 1.5 million years ago for rudolfensis. This documentary was created by Discovery World based on a true story. This documentary covers the unknown line of events that led up to the fatal collision of two fully loaded Boeing 747s. On March 27, 1977, a KLM 747 and a Pan Am 747 were on route to the Gran Canaria International Airport when unexpected calls were made by Canary Island Separatists that there were bombs at the airport. Authorities closed down Gran Canaria International Airport and had to divert all flights to a small airport in Los Rodeos. In total 5 large aircrafts were diverted to this small regional airport that couldn t easily accommodate the aircrafts. Eventually after almost 4 hours from the original diversion, the KLM was cleared to go the full length of a runway and do a 180В° turn. The Pan Am flight was instructed to follow the KLM but take the 3rd exit off the runway to their left. The Pan Am passed the 3rd exit off the runway and the KLM began taking off without proper clearance. • 18. The Internet And Its Impact On Our Lives Essay According to History.com, in 1965, ARPAnet, also known today as the Internet, was invented for military purposes. However, Tim Berners Lee had a different intention for ARPAnet. He invented the worldwide web where information was accessible for anyone. Centuries ago, to impart knowledge or information from the past and pass it from one person to another, books were created. To obtain it, they had to go to a library, read tons of books about a certain topic, jotted down and remembered the details they need. Today, all you need is an internet access and you could have an enormous amount of data at your fingertips in an object that was manufactured with the same size as a brick. Libraries were mainly used to obtain a physical evidence of a documentation needed for research, studies, papers or projects. As stated in History.com, for 56 years, the Internet had evolved. It became an ultimate tool in our daily lives. However, nothing comes without a price. Nicholas Carr, an author of the article Is Google Making Us Stupid? , published in The Atlantic as to how the Internet, specifically google, is changing the way we read and the way we interact with reading materials. On the other hand, John Battelle, an author, and a journalist, wrote a polemical article entitled Google: Making Nick Carr, But It s Made This Guy Smarter published his response to Carr in his own blog. These lines not only open up the beginning of one the best poems of the American Romantic period, but they also represent a prominent theme of one of this period s best poet, Walt Whitman. In Walt Whitman s Song of Myself, Whitman deals with his time period s most prominent theme of democracy. Whitman tells readers that they must not only observe the democratic life but they must become one with it. As Whitman states, For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you (3). Democracy provides a connection with all people. It is as if Joseph Stella felt this connection and decided to depict it in his collection of paintings entitled Americans in the Rough. The individual is of no greater or lesser worth than anyone else. Beatrice Marovich states that, It is a song for fellow Americans, about the American body politic (349). An analysis of Song of Myself portrays that understanding and becoming one with democracy through political collectivity essentially sets the stage for the American democratic self. Non Systemic Testimonial Injustice By Miranda Fricker Non systemic Testimonial Injustice In Testimonial Injustice by Miranda Fricker, she identifies that there are systemic testimonial injustices and they relate to a common prejudice towards the speaker. Fricker uses the term testimonial injustice, which is an injustice to someone whom is unjustly perceived by others to have less knowledge than he/she actually has. An example of a systemic testimonial injustice would be the accent of a speaker, causing the speaker to receive a credibility deficit. The speaker is wronged in his/her knowledge as a result of the prejudice employed against him/her. However, Fricker did not include an exhaustive enough list of testimonial injustices. More specifically, I argue that Fricker overlooked a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... An example of a credibility deficit would be a professor at a university receiving less credibility and respect of his knowledge due to his accent. His accent could lead the students to believe he isn t capable to be someone who holds much knowledge. The students doing so wrongs the professor, and he is receiving testimonial injustice. This type of testimonial injustice is systemic and not justified as the professor is assumed to have this job because he is properly qualified for the position. This example is systemic because it contains a connection with a common prejudice that occurs often in society. People with accents often face prejudice and receive a credibility deficit as a result. According to Fricker, testimonial injustices occur when identity power is in play. Identity power is whenever there is an operation of power with shared concepts of social identities. An example Fricker uses of active identity power is a man silencing a woman with a joke about her in The Talented Mr. Ripley. There are two types of operations of power discussed by Fricker. An example of passive identity power is a woman being silenced simply because she is a woman and feeling like she shouldn t speak out. Identity power can work in a positive manner or a negative manner. I thought that certain ride was scary, because ever since I was five I would always throw up on the roller coasters, or even car rides. I hated roller coasters ever since I threw up. • 23. A Comparison Of Love In Great Expectations The Lovely and the Loveless People as well as writers often mistake infatuation with love. As a result, love at first sight is a common trope in film and literature. Love is something that takes time and effort; people must choose to put in the care and understanding into a relationship for it to be considered love. While the two are similar, infatuation is attraction to someone based on their appearance; love is mutual affection and the act of looking beyond someone s problems and flaws. In Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, the main characters all indulge in infatuation, but never love. Because Pip and Estella s lives are built off of appearances rather than character, they cannot form healthy relationships and thus cannot experience true love. Because Pip is obsessed with Estella s beauty and treats her as an object, he can never love her while he is forcing himself to love someone who will only hurt him. To illustrate, when Pip is out walking by the piers with Joe, he begins to think of Miss Havisham, an eccentric, miserable old woman, and Estella, a beautiful but cold hearted girl, pondering to himself, It was pleasant and quiet... whenever I watched the vessels standing out to sea with their white sails spread, I somehow thought of Miss Havisham and Estella; whenever the light struck aslant, afar off, upon a cloud or sail or green hill or waterline, it was just the same (124; ch 15). This reveals how Pip is no longer able to think about beautiful objects without thinking of Estella. He is connecting symbols of purity and peacefulness to the ever chaotic and manipulative Miss Havisham and Estella. Because he idealizes them and puts them on a pedestal, he is unable to care about them as equals or as human beings. In addition, while Pip is waiting with Joe by the door for Mrs. Joe to come home, he looked at the stars, and considered how awful it would be for a man to turn his face up to them as he froze to death, and see no help or pity in all the glittering multitude (59; ch 7); this illustrates how Pip views the stars the same way he views Estella: as cold and pitiless. While they are beautiful, they are completely out of reach. And despite the fact that stars, by nature, are fiery and warm, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Compare And Contrast Federalist And Federalists The ground of liberty is to be gained by inches, that we must be contented to secure what we can get from time to time, and eternally press forward for what is yet to get. It takes time to persuade men to do even what is for their own good, quoted by Thomas Jefferson on January 27, 1790. Around this time there were two political parties that are talked about throughout this paper, The Federalists and The Democratic Republican party. There were several problems occurring in the United States of America around the 1790 s, due to the fact that George Washington resigned from presidency and didn t choose to run for a third four year term. Around this time Washington worried that the nation will split from political parties emerging trying to elect a new president and vice president. There are two major political parties emerging, Federalist and the Democratic Republican party, these two parties had differing views on The Constitution, ideal people, government, and foreign policy position. These two parties do represent, and they do not represent the Democratic Party and the Republican Party of today. Our government today follows some of each sides views today. I think that it doesn t matter what kind of job you have or what ethnicity you are to be president, unlike the Federalist and the Democratic Republican party. The Government chooses bits and pieces of there ideal views, and that s how they run the government today. I do favor parts of the Federalist Party, and the Democratic Republican Party today. I like how the Democratic Republican Party had farmers as some of there people because today we don t run off large scale manufacturing, and large scale manufacturing only, we use small farms to help produce products for the whole entire world. Alexander Hamiltonheaded one these parties known as the Federalists, he was followed by George Washington, John Adams, and Charles Pinckney. • 48. Disadvantages Of Disaster Risk Disaster risk indicates the possibility of adverse effects in the future. It originates from the collaboration of social and environmental processes, from the mixture of natural hazards and the vulnerabilities of exposed elements. Due to increases in the exposure of persons and assets, the brutality of the impacts of disasters depends strongly on the level of exposure and vulnerability in the affected area, and proof indicates that risk has increased worldwide largely. For example, long term increases in economic losses from weather and climate related disasters is caused by increasing exposure (IPCC 2012). There have been limited decreases in vulnerability as a result of, for instance, better building standards and compliance, but these reducing effects are geographically rough and there are many examples of increased vulnerability, mostly in large urban centres and in developing countries. This has created new risk and potential disaster losses mainly at the local and community level with the poor and demoted, marginal populations, women and children, and those dependent on single sector economies suspiciously affected. Exposure: Exposure refers to the portfolio of essentials in an area in which hazard events may occur. In 376 the Visigoths crossed the Danube river, a boundary of the Roman empire, and moved southward. The Visigoths then beat the Romans at the battle of Adrianople, two years later. Which effected Rome a lot, because Rome already had a lot of enemies waiting to bring them down, the Visigoths made a path for that. At the west, the Vandals crossed the Rhine river, another boundary of Rome in 406. The Vandals were known for fighting every city they stumbled upon, even if they won or lost, they kept going, that is what made them successful in their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 54. Superego In Lord Of The Flies Essay Frued s theory of the human psyche is that it is made up of three parts: the id, ego, and superego. No adults survive, and the boys are left to govern themselves and get rescued. In the novel Jack represents the id, Piggy and Simon the superego, and Ralph the ego. • 55. B. F. Skinner s Negative Impacts The impacts that B. F. Skinner made were world changing. Imagine this: a world with no reinforcement. Positive reinforcement, negative reinforcements and all forms of punishment might not seem like a big deal, but they are used everywhere, in every situation even in our studio at Acton Academy. If you look around you, there are many systems powered by B F Skinner s theories, like Eagle Bucks, strikes, and honor codes. Eagle Bucks are used as negative and positive reinforcement the more points. We get more Eagle Bucks we earn and the harder we work the less likely it is that we lose Eagle Bucks. If we mess around distract and talk to your friends. Going back to points, another system we have in place at Acton is freedom levels. Freedom levels ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 56. Comparison Of Swift s Robinson Defooe And Robinson Crusoe Defoe s Robinson Crusoe and Swift s Gulliver s Travels are both novels which focus on the nature of the middle man, whether this refers to social position, severity of feeling, or even geographic location. One of the major points at which Swift most directly satirizes Defoe s work concerns the underlying conventions of the these values, and their capacity to improve the lives and the minds of those who hold them. Throughout Robinson Crusoe, the novel s protagonist learns of the truth of the importance of holding to moderation; something which he learns through suffering the consequences of his own rash actions. Crucial to this is the idea of pre destination, providence, and of a rational order to the universe an order that only the middle class is able to discover. If one considers Swift s work alongside the vision that is presented in Robinson Crusoe, then it is clear that the former presents a satireof the very idea, central to Defoe s work, that such events can be made comprehensible according to a schema of divine providence and conventional morality. To understand Swift s satire, we must first understand how Gulliver s Travels and Robinson Crusoe are similar, yet inherently different. The opening chapters of Robinson Crusoe place the novel within the context of a providential moderation and a desire to refuse the natural constraints of duty and familial obligation. This is made clear in the opening speech given to the narrator by Crusoe s father, in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
