“Stop All the Clocks, Cut Off the Telephone” by W. H. Auden
Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone by W. H. Auden
Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.
Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead,
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.
He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong.
The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood.

Again, the author selects a new set of imagery, such as stars, moon, sun, ocean, and wood to remind of
the heaven in which the speaker used to live, and then to sweep it off right away. The last statement
For nothing now can ever come to any good (16) finally reinforces the speaker s loss and unhappiness.
In loneliness, the speaker s love becomes fiercer and more truthful. It is the fierceness and truthfulness
that lead the speaker to the last stair of hopelessness. The end of the poem is also the hopeless end of
the speaker s life because of nothing ...good. Love makes people become selfish, but it is also makes
the world greater. In this poem, the world that the speaker lives and loves is not limited in my North,
my South, my East and West / my working week and my Sunday rest (9 10), it spreads to My noon,
my midnight, my talk, my song (11). The poem s imagery dominates most of the third stanza giving
readers an image of a peaceful world in which everything is in order. However, the last sentence of the
stanza is the decisive element. This element not only destroys the inner world of the speaker, but it
also sends out the message that love or life is mortal. There is no perfection in the world, so if there is
love, there is separation. Through the first three stanzas, its language, its voice, and its imagery are
used in an increasing level. Besides the words

Theories Of Attachment
Attachment is defined as an emotional bond that is formed between a child and an individual that is
developed throughout the child s development. As a human, it is common for us to form emotional
bonds with people we are close with especially to our parents. Most of the studies conducted on the
attachment theory mainly focuses on the attachment between infants and their parents, although
attachments between adults can also occur. Attachment behaviour is not only observed in humans but
also in animals, which is also referred to as imprinting by biologists. This essay will examine the
attachment theory, explore Ainsworth strange situation experiments and discuss how infant attachment
styles affect later development. Early studies on attachment were conducted on animals and one of the
earliest ones was carried out by Konrad Lorenz. His studies eventually led to the discovery of
imprinting, which is defined as the behaviour that takes place during a critical period and involves ...

Learning theory of attachment proposes that infants form attachments based on the provision of food.
In other words, an infant will form attachments to whoever who feeds it. This theory also involves the
processes of classical and operant conditioning because infants form attachments by learning that
some people provide comforts and responses. The more widely accepted evolutionary theory of
attachment states that humans and biologically set to form attachments with others to ensure survival.
The theory also claims that it is care and responsiveness which forms attachment instead of food. To
explain, the greater the response towards an infant s signal, such as crying, smiling and clinging, the
more likely it is to form an attachment with the infant. With complex series of interactions, full
attachment may be formed between the caregiver and the

The key of C minor, Beethoven s Sturm und Drang (German for Storm and Stress ) key which many
of his most intensive and powerful pieces were written in (5th Symphony, Piano Concerto No.3, for

during Beethoven s early period, when he was 27 years old, and published in 1799. It is perhaps
Beethoven s earliest composition that has achieved widespread and enduring popularity. Dedicated to
Prince Carl von Lichnowsky who was described by Beethoven as one of my truest friends and patrons

Kabuki Theater Essay
Kabuki Theater
*No Works Cited
Kabuki Theater was created around the year 1600. It was almost around the same time that the English
began to form colonies on the American continent. The history of Kabuki is as long as the history of
the United States.
Kabuki was created by a shrine maiden named Okuni. Okuni was from Izumo Shrine. Her
performances in the rive beds of the ancient capital of Kyoto caused a sensation. Soon their scale
increased and a number of competing companies started.
Early Kabuki was much different from what is seen today. It was consisted mostly of large group
dances performed by women. Most of these women acted as prostitutes off stage. Finally the
government banned women from the stage in an effort to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was also during this period that the close relationship between Kabuki and the Bunraku puppet
theater began. The two would continue to grow while influencing each other.
The decades after the Genroku period saw numerous cycles of creative periods followed by
refinement. In the early 18th century, the rise of skilled playwrights in the Bunraku puppet theater
helped it to deprive Kabuki of popularity for a time. I t was remarked by one observer that it seemed
as though there was no Kabuki. Actors responded by adapting puppet plays for the stage and creating
stylized movements to mimic the puppets themselves. The late 18th century saw a trend towards
realism and the switch of the cultural center from Kyoto and Osaka to Edo. One consequence of this
was the change of tastes in onnagata acting. While onnagata trained in Kyoto who had the soft, gentle
nature of that city had been valued before, now audiences preferred those who showed the strong pride
and nature of Edo women. An increasing audience desire for decadence as seen in the ghost plays and
beautification of murder scenes marked early 19th century.
The opening of Japan to the West in 1868 affected Kabuki and the rest of the country profoundly. Just
when it thought it was free from government restrictions; Kabuki was faced with the challenge to
adapt to the changing world. Actors like Ichikawa Danjuro IX tried to raise the

Innocence In Treasure Island
There is no single definition of children s literature. It can be defined broadly as anything that children
read or more specifically as fiction, non fiction, poetry, novel, or drama. The focus of this essay will
be the boyhood of Laurie in Little Women and boyhood of Jim in Treasure Island. These novels were
written in different continents, which draw between British and American literary tradition in the 19th

NCAA March Madness Regression Report
In this project, many different statistics were used to try and predict the winners of the NCAA March
Madness tournament. To do this, statistics were tested from the previous year to see if they moderately
correlated to winning games. When a stat is moderately correlated, that means it relates to winning.
Using a scatter plot, a graph that gives a visual of whether or not a stat is correlated, correlation
coefficients were found for each stat. The correlation coefficient is a decimal that shows if a set of
numbers is moderately correlated. After finding stats that were the closest to being moderately
correlated, a metric was put together that used the best stats to determine which teams will win games.
The stat that was the closest to being moderately correlated was the turnover ratio of the teams.
Another stat that was almost moderately correlated was RPI, or Rating Percentage Index. This stat
uses a team s win percentage, their opponents win percentage, and their opponents opponents win
percentage to rank teams. Also, missed field goal percentage was a stat that was used. ... Show more

There is a catch, however. If any stat was strongly correlated, basketball games would already be
decided before the game starts. The team with the highest strongly correlated stat would win every
game, and there would be no point to the tournament. Strong correlations are an impossibility anyway,
because the game of basketball has so many variables. Injuries, crowds, nervousness, and plain luck
could make any team win a game, and these variables are unchartable. If one team has the best field
goal percentage and the best RPI, but they get nervous, they could lose. Metrics can t count for
nervousness. These variables prevent one team from winning every game every time and, at the same
time, make watching March Madness a fun

The Human Struggle In Yasujiro Ozu s Tokyo Story
Generations don t battle, they mostly clash into each other. We see this in our very own lives, where
parents bring up their past and say, If only you knew how good you have it! . This will forever be
somewhat a problem in the past, present, and future of our lives. One generation will always be
underestimated or beyond correct then the other. In Yasujiro Ozu s film Tokyo Story we see constant
clashing of the elderly and the youth. Ozu s message of how the generations have changed is a way of
him defining to us what the human struggle is. Due to the character s actions in the way they treat each
other we can pick up on the struggles that they are having and see the human struggle in the film. At
the start of the film, Ozu shows us two of the main characters of the film; Shukichi and Tomi. We see
them packing their bags to go on a trip. They are going to see their children whom, they haven t seen
in a long while. We can see that Ozu is showing us that becoming old is one struggle that most
humans fear, but of course it must occur in our lives. When the old slow couple are packing, Shukichi
asks Tomi where the inflatable pillow is and Tomi responds and says that she gave it to him. With
aging comes forgetfulness and stubbornness; and when Tomi says she gave it to him he starts to say no
you didn t, you still have it. Later we see it appear in his bag where he said it wasn t and nothing is
said when he finds it. It is simply brushed away with no argument to follow. Ozu shows

Ritalin Abuse
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) first licensed methylphenidate hydrochloride in 1955 for
treating what was formerly known as hyperactivity, attention deficit disorder or ADD. The drug was
commonly prescribed in the 1990s when the diagnosis of ADHD became better known and accepted.
In 2000, Janssen Pharmaceuticals received approval from the FDA to market Concerta, an extended
release form of Ritalin. Approximately two thirds of 6.4 million children presently diagnosed have
been prescribed drugs like Ritalin or Adderall (another common CNS stimulant).
First synthesized in 1944, the Ritalin formula (at that time commonly known as MPH, from
methylphenidate) was improved in 1950, and by 1954 it was being tested on humans. In 1957, Ciba
Pharmaceutical Company began marketing MPH as Ritalin to treat chronic fatigue, depression,
psychosis associated with depression, narcolepsy, and to offset the sedating effects of other
medications. It was used into the 1960s to try to counteract the symptoms of barbiturate overdose.
Ritalin has a high potential for abuse when injected it may produce feelings of euphoria. Those who
misuse Ritalin increase the amphetamine like effects by crushing the tablets into a powder and
snorting it or dissolving it in water for intravenous injection. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

While amphetamines stimulate the release of dopamine, cocaine and Ritalin block the transporters that
reuptake dopamine into the neuron that released it. By blocking transporters, Ritalin allows more
dopamine to reach receptors, thus increasing attention signaling, which helps people with ADHD to
focus. Ritalin, when taken orally, slowly raises dopamine levels over the course of an hour or so. By
contrast, when inhaled or injected, cocaine reaches the brain in seconds, producing a

Ducks Unlimited Vs. Delta Waterfowl
Ducks Unlimited vs. Delta Waterfowl Even though there are many ways to conserve waterfowl, there
technically are not any wrong ways. However, one could argue that there are better ways. That debate
rages on between sportsmen and environmental conservationists alike. There are two big organizations
when it comes to conserving waterfowl and wetlands, Ducks Unlimited and Delta Waterfowl. Both
groups are able to raise millions of dollars for waterfowl due to their enormous amount of members.
However, I feel that Ducks Unlimited is the better conservation group because they can maintain and
manage the landscape of an ecosystem effectively, and they are a greater political force compared to
Delta Waterfowl. Ducks Unlimited was founded by Joseph ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Ducks Unlimited tries to revert these watersheds back to their natural levels by draining the wetlands
that have extremely high levels of contaminants in the water. They then clean the soil in the habitat
and find a way to decrease the extra contaminates from entering the watershed. Next they will pump
healthy water back into the wetlands and install buffer strips that act like a filter that will catch the
extra nutrients and silt. The restoration of grasslands and forests is extremely important when it comes
to breeding grounds for ducks. Dabbling Ducks use the tall grass found around ponds or in marshes to
build nest and raise their young. Diving Ducks will flock to flooded forest areas and build a nest inside
the holes of a tree and they will raise their young from above the ground. In recent years these habitats
have been reduced significantly for farming and other purposes. In order to restore these habitats
Ducks Unlimited must first purchase the land from the landowner. After they have the rights to the
property they will begin to make changes to the area so it can be a more suitable ecosystem for
waterfowl. When restoring grasslands Ducks Unlimited will replant the local grasses and dig ponds in
the area, these actions will help hatchlings survive to adulthood. After these properties have been
restored Ducks Unlimited will donate the land to government agencies that

Irish Immigrants To America
The largest group ever to immigrate to the United States was the Irish. Today, there are over forty
three million people that are of Irish blood within the US. There were three different reasons that
brought Irish to America. The first was the early medieval Christian church. The second was the fight
of the Roman Catholic nobility. The third and final was the great potato famine, which was the
greatest mass emigration ever. The first and second reason the Irish immigrated was mostly caused by
conditions after 1717 that began to grow uneasy. The British encouraged the people of Northern
Ireland who were called Scotch Irish to create a Catholic Ireland. Irish could not live with religious
freedom. They were often challenged by the British

Non Excludability And Non Rivalrous Consumption
Imagine this: a car with a newly repaired suspension and a recent alignment job on four new tires
driving on a poorly maintained road filled with holes. In the span of ten minutes, the car has driven
over four potholes about half of a foot deep, and the two thousand dollars that were spent on the car
are all wasted in that short drive. Public goods are a large part of our life. The condition of the roads
we drives on and the sidewalk we walk on, the jobs we get, and the house we can afford to live in are
all influenced directly by the public goods. According to Tyler Cowen, professor of Economics at
George Mason University, public goods are anything that has non excludability and non rivalrous
consumption. In other words, it cannot be kept from those who do not contribute and can be used by
multiple people at the same time. In the Atlanta metropolitan area, the distribution of public goods is
on vastly different levels. Because public goods are funded through taxes, the income gap in various
areas of the metropolitan area plays a huge factor in the distribution of the goods. A wealthier region s
tax fund is significantly higher because of the higher price range, especially on everyday goods and
the availability of services. One great example is Milton High School located in North Fulton County
where income averages are in the sixth digit and Banneker High School in South Fulton with a five
digit average. Milton has an above Georgia average in both mathematics and English,

The adverse effects of drug drug interactions in patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder can
be severe and depends mainly on the pharmacokinetic properties of the drug. Both the distances
between drug targets and the comparison of target neighbors are important when when administering

effects such as sedation, orthostatic hypotension, tachycardia or transaminase the prescribing drugs in

The Theme Of Love In Nectar In A Sieve
The theme of Nectar in a Sieve I have chosen would be love and marriage. Throughout the entire book
the presence of love is strongly noticeable. Love is what fuels the strength/bond between most
families. And it didn t fail to do the same in the Rukami family. Despite the direct mention of love,
love is very prominent throughout the novel. The actions, tones, and emotions of the characters show
the underlying presence and strength love carries in this rural Indian community. Love is expressed in
many different ways in this novel. There is a sort of unspoken existence of love found within this
family s story. Nectar in a Sieve is full of all different kinds of love. Family love, romantic love, love
for children, and abstract philosophical love of life and land, are all central to the novel. The ability to
endure throughout hardship is one of the most present motifs in the book, and often takes the form of
love. Shmoop Editorial Team. Nectar in a Sieve Theme of Love. Shmoop. Shmoop University, 11

marriage. It points out the many types of love found in the novel. It also, discusses one of the main

quote that I found recognizes the growth of marriages and the relationship it has in this novel, it s not a
guarantee that love and understanding follow from being related

Women During The War Period Essay
The war period changed the life of women, children, indians, and blacks. The minorities of the country
became the most dependable workers during this time. Before the war most of the workers were
males. When the war broke out most of the males had to leave their jobs and go fight in the war. This
meant that there were many jobs openings for those who did not have a good job or were not working
in the industry they wanted to be in. Women were told it was their patriotic duty to step up and start
working. The number of employed women increased to 19 million during the period of war (732). The
jobs women were working included everything from operating heavy machinery to driving to taxis
and to being nurses helping with the war effort. Women having to work changed the lifestyle of
children. Before the war the women usually stayed home to help take care and provide for the
children, this changed during the war. Children were left unattended to during the day since one parent
was off and war and the other was off working. This led to children misbehaving and getting
themselves in to trouble since they were left unsupervised during the day. ... Show more content on

The general definition of science is the systematic study of the physical and natural world through
observation and experiments. On the contrary, it is much more than that. Much like art, it holds a
sense of subjectivity. It is an abstract paradigm that requires the input of one s personal beliefs and
values to help it progress. It is much more than just facts and theories of how the world works, but
also a prime representation of the ethics and beliefs of the scientists that help mold it today. Science is
a database for factual knowledge on the natural world, furthermore, it also incorporates the
environment it has created. The environment consists of the particular people, behaviors, and struggles
of the scientific community. Even though science incorporates many thoughts and ideas, it does not
contain other ideas. Science does not hold a moral category. It does not define what is considered right
and what is considered wrong. It merely provides information on certain ideas for further
understanding. Any theories and applications of it can lead to other subjects. This idea also applies to
what the acquired scientific knowledge is used for. Even though the ideas of complexity and
subjectivity are present in both science and art, the concept of aesthetic should only be important for
art. Despite requiring organization and general cleanliness, science does not need to pass the eye test.
Science should be represented through proper data and its analysis and the non factual features need to
have a rational reasoning. To judge or base an idea on its appeal does not equal to

The Importance Of Teachers On The Classroom Environment
In order to develop strong relationships with my students, colleagues, and parents, I plan to do a
variety of little things to yield big results. The relationship that teachers have with students is vital to
the classroom environment. In You ve Got to Reach Them to Teach Them, Mary Kim Schrek writes
that the human encounter between teacher and student is often a more powerful teaching tool than the
academic content, the grade, the data analysis, and the hours spent picking apart the curriculum
(Schrek, 2011, p. 5). In order to establish such relationships, I plan to follow a four step procedure that
I read about in an article by Nina Sears on the National Education Association s website. Sears article
suggests that a teacher get to know their students, individualize the curriculum, watch what they say,
and keep trying to reach students (Sears, 2014). As an attempt to get to know my students, I will create
a little survey on the first day of school for each student to fill out; questions would include asking my
students what their favorite color is or what type of books they like to read. By doing this, I will learn
about my students likes and dislikes and how to use their answer in the curriculum. Individualizing the
curriculum might seem like a huge undertaking but if a teacher is willing to work with the student, it is
not a big deal. For example, I was an auditory learner and I had a teacher who altered the project
requirements so I could write a song to

A Little History Lesson
Bilingual education is not new. Contrary to popular belief, bilingual education programs were not
products of the 1960s. In fact, they aren t even products of the twentieth century. The first state to
actually pass a bilingual education law was Ohio, in 1839 (History of Bilingual Education, 1998). The
law was for German English bilingual education, and was passed as a result of a strong parental
initiative. By the end of the nineteenth century, about a dozen states had passed similar laws, and in
many other states such instruction was offered, although it had not been sanctioned by the state.
During the World War One era, however, as the loyalty of non English speaking Americans came
increasingly under suspicion, many states decided to enact English only instruction, in an attempt to
Americanize non English speakers. As a result, during the 1920s the bilingual education program had
been almost completely dismantled.
In response to the apparent failure of English only instruction, the United States government passed
the Bilingual Education Act in 1968, providing federal funds to local school districts, in an attempt to
promote the incorporation of native language instruction into school curricula. The government felt
that, leaving LEP students to sink or swim in English only classrooms made a mockery of public
education (History of Bilingual Education, 1998). Recognizing the civil rights of LEP students to have

When it comes to movies for children, Disney movies top the list. Who would forget Mulan,

Uberx Should Be Legalized In Canada Case Study
An issue that is hotly debated is should UberX be allowed in Toronto. Some think that yes, UberX
should be allowed in Toronto but others think that it should not be allowed. Yes I know UberX has
been legalized, but this argument is fighting against the legalization. It is clear that overall UberX
should not be allowed in Toronto. More Toronto citizens are disregarding UberX. People have realized
that though the rates may be low the risk of something happening is high, because UberX s drivers are
untrained and background checks are limited. Although UberX s rates may be low, the can spike up in
times of high demand. During storms and rush hour the fair can double, even triple in cost. The finally
reason is that the low rates are unfair to other cab companies, because other cab companies actually
hire people as a job, UberX is just for people who want to make extra money.
Another reason UberX should not be allowed in Toronto is because the UberX drivers have not had to
go through special training to become a cab driver. All they have too present is a driver s license, have
a background check and present a functioning car. The background check includes a driving record
and a criminal check. Well the background check may seem significant, it does not collect enough
information leaving riders vulnerable. The background check only looks at if you have ... Show more

Recollection In Meno
In Meno, Plato introduces the theory that knowledge comes by recollection. Through the character of
Socrates, he presents this idea, and his argument deserves some clarification and explanation.
Plato draws a sharp distinction between knowledge, which is certain, and mere opinion, which is not
certain. Opinions derive from the shifting world of sensation; knowledge derives from the world of
timeless forms, or essences. The Platonic doctrine of recollection is the idea that we are born
possessing all knowledge and our realisation of that knowledge is contingent on our discovery of it.
Whether the doctrine should be taken literally or not is a subject of continuous debate. The doctrine
implies that nothing is ever learned from scratch rather, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is the idea that knowledge requires experiencing something for yourself. For example, Plato
thinks that in order to know the way to Larissa it is necessary to have travelled the route yourself.
Similarly, he thinks, in order to know a philosophical truth you must have worked through the issue
yourself, so that you can grasp how this truth connects with other things that you believe. This notion
implies that knowledge is not something that we can absorb, unthinkingly, from people around us;
from a certain point of view, it is not incorrect.
Furthermore, Socrates sees knowledge to be better than true opinion, because true opinion can escape
the mind and thus isn t worth much at least until one ties it down by giving an account of the reason
why it matters or why it is true. Therefore, justified true belief is knowledge, because it arises out of
recollection. As such, it can be said that Plato believes that knowledge is prized more than correct
opinion, and that knowledge differs from correct opinion in being tied down.
As well as that, Meno proposes an idea that goodness could be taught if it was knowledge as long as
there are teachers to do so. There are none and therefore, virtue cannot be taught and it cannot be
knowledge yet it is a good thing. In conclusion, the dispute between Meno and Socrates boils down to
the agreement that correct guidance is a result of knowledge and true belief, and is as such both useful

The Tsunami Of The Earthquake
The Tsunami March 11, 2011 was a day that impacted many lives. Little did anyone know that thirty
seven miles off the east coast of Japan a disaster was brewing. Tension on the Circum Pacific Belt was
released. When this tension released the Pacific Plate was thrusted 5 8 meters above its previous
location(book). This thrust upward displaces water, which will cause a tsunami. A tsunami is large
ocean wave that are set in motion be a major undersea earthquake(book). The upward movement of
the Pacific tectonic was the earthquake. Japan is located on the Circum Pacific Belt. This is the edge
of the Pacific Plate that encompasses many coastal regions, and holds many areas of a lot of tectonic
plate movement(Book). The Earthquake that caused the tsunami in Japan was a level 9 magnitude.
Earthquakes of magnitudes of 8 or great would have to be a tension snap that occurs along a segment
that is around 600 miles in length(Book). This is an extraordinary length. This is about the distance
from Dayton Ohio to New York, New York. Can you Imagine a piece of land that massive shifting
upwards as much as the Pacific Plate did? The tsunami in Japan was a wave of about 40 meters high.
Since the earthquake happened 37 miles off of the coast of Japan(Book), there was plenty of time for
the wall of water to build. When the earthquake occurred there was a retreat of all of the water on the
coast. It appeared that the water had been sucked away, but in reality it hadn t, it was gathering

Ethics and Related Philosophies
I. DEFINITION OF ETHICS
Rushworth Kidder states that standard definitions of ethics have typically included such phrases as the
science of the ideal human character or the science of moral duty .
Ethics, sometimes known as philosophical ethics, ethical theory, moral theory, and moral philosophy,
is a branch ofphilosophy that involves systematizing, defending and recommending concepts of right
and wrong conduct, often addressing disputes of moral diversity. The term comes from the Greek
word ἠθικός ethikos from ἦθος ethos, which means custom, habit . The superfield within philosophy
known as axiology includes both ethics and aesthetics and is unified by each sub branch s concern
with value. Philosophical ethics investigates what is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Consequently, distinguishing the philosophical beliefs of Socrates from those of Plato and Xenophon
is not easy and it must be remembered that what is attributed to Socrates might more closely reflect
the specific concerns of these thinkers.
The matter is complicated because the historical Socrates seems to have been notorious for asking
questions but not answering, claiming to lack wisdom concerning the subjects about which he
questioned others.
If anything in general can be said about the philosophical beliefs of Socrates, it is that he was morally,
intellectually, and politically at odds with many of his fellow Athenians. When he is on trial for heresy
and corrupting the minds of the youth of Athens, he uses his method of elenchos to demonstrate to the
jurors that their moral values are wrong headed. He tells them they are concerned with their families,
careers, and political responsibilities when they ought to be worried about the welfare of their souls .
Socrates assertion that the gods had singled him out as a divine emissary seemed to provoke irritation,
if not outright ridicule. Socrates also questioned the Sophistic doctrine that arete (virtue) can be
taught. He liked to observe that successful fathers (such as the prominent military general Pericles)

Media Manipulation Exposed in George Orwell s Shooting an Elephant The phrase the power of the
press is used often, but what exactly is the power of the press? Since the beginning of news reporting,
it s been known that what actually gets into the news reports is monitored and carefully picked by
higher authorities. What isn t widely known, however, is that the media can use specific wording and
phrases that, on the surface, look like normal news coverage, but are actually a technique of the media
to control the images people see and the words they hear and read. From this, people then form their
ideals, but are these actually ideals of those people if the media from which they based them off of

On a daily basis, Orwell was perceived as an intruder upon the Burmese land by the natives, but on
this day, he is momentarily worth watching (Orwell 337). Taking up an elephant rifle, Orwell went
forward to do something about the elephant, though he wasn t sure exactly what that would be. He
didn t want to kill the elephant, but now that he held the rifle, he felt that the Burmese had the power
and were forcing him along: Here was I, the white man with his gun, standing in front of the unarmed
native crowd seemingly the leading actor of the piece; but in reality I was only an absurd puppet
pushed to and fro by the will of those yellow faces behind... [The leader] becomes a sort of hollow,
posing dummy, the conventionalized figure of a sahib. For it is the condition of his rule that he shall
spend his life in trying to impress the natives, and so in every crisis he has got to do what the natives
expect of him (Orwell 337). Orwell s perspective was that because the Burmese expected him to shoot
the elephant, he had no other choice but to do so. His own ideals of how shooting the elephant was
wrong were overcastted by the Burmese media, who urged him along and condoned the death of the
elephant. It is not evident whether or not the natives were aware of their power over Orwell. The
media as we know it today, however, did realize its power over the

Stanford V. Stanford s Massive Ponzi Scheme
Over the next decade Mr. Stanford, directly assisted by James M. Davis, Stanford International Bank s
CFO, and Leroy King, Antigua s chief banking supervisor, executed a massive Ponzi scheme. In
addition, Laura Pendergest Holt, the chief investment officer of Stanford Financial Group ( SFG ) and
a member of SIB s investment committee, gave credence to the fraudulent scheme by misrepresenting
herself to investors and to the firm s financial advisers claiming that she oversaw SIB s entire
investment portfolio and employed a sizeable team to invest in conservative and liquid assets. The
notion of potential fraud came quite early on as an examination was initiated in 1997 by the Fort
Worth District Office of the SEC due to concerns that the company s sales of CDs constituted a Ponzi
scheme. At the time the examination was conducted, Stanford Group Company had five branch offices

Background This case study revolves around John. He is a capable 11 year old pupil who is an above
average ability boy. However, he almost did not make it into the standard stream in his school. His
results were badly affected due to his frequent inattention in class as well as his incomplete
homework. He is enrolled in an elite primary school that has the GEP program. Based on the class
grades, he is the weakest pupil in the last standard class. John is greatly unmotivated and shows no
interest in his lessons or any class activities. His classmates and even other better achieving
schoolmates look down on him due to his poor grades. They exclude him from their activities and

This awareness would allow the parents to realize that there is a problem and thus put in more effort to

self confidence, those are what John is unfortunately going through. It may not be obvious, but peers
have a large enough role, besides his family in his development (Allen amp; Antonishak, 2008). Peer
relationship actually affects how a child would excel in school as well as in the later part of life
(Bukowski, Brendgen amp; Vitaro, 2007; Song amp; Siegel, 2008). Every individual, especially those
within the younger years would have a desire to be accepted by their peers. In this case, John does not
have any friends. Erik Erikson s (1968) life span development theory suggests that John s fourth
psychosocial stage is about inferiority as well as the fifth stage of identity confusion. The fourth stage
is a stage where children develop their self confidence in their own abilities. The fifth stage states that
they explore themselves and in the journey attempt to find answers on their identity and their wants
and needs. In John s case, his problems are twofold i.e. at home and at school. At home, his absent
parents are not there to praise him for what he does. Neither are they there to help him with all these
questions he has about himself. In school, the condescension he receives from his peers would erode
his self confidence and also he is unable to

This company was founded in the 1940 s by Joyce Hornady. Shortly after WWII, Joyce teamed up

Remanufacturing of spent shells is a process of taking already fired bullets and rebuilding them to be

wholesalers that market and supply ammo through channels of stores and ammo depot to the public

The Death With Dignity Act
Death with Dignity Act Yellowing of the skin, hollowed in eyes, hair loss, and habitual wheezing or
shortness of breath is only an insubstantial glimpse of the rancid face of leukemia. It is estimated that
around 1 million people in the United States are living with a terminal illness (Pan 2). Some people
may feel hopeless, like their life is now meaningless due to their circumstance, and the hand they have
been dealt. When something of this magnitude occurs in ones life, doctor assisted suicide should never
be an option, or even a thought on their mind. Human euthanasia is ethically, and morally wrong. It
violates the principles of medical ethics that doctors take, it costs less to keep a person alive, rather
than die, and if this medication falls into the wrong hands, a murder could come about from it.

Gabriel Garcia Marquez s Short Story Sleeping Beauty on...
I. Introduction Gabriel Garcia Marquez is not the first author to reinvent classic European fairy tales.
Yet his short story Sleeping Beauty on the Airplane, alternatively titled The Plane of Sleeping Beauty
is a remarkable retelling of the Grimm Brothers original Briar Rose. The original story includes
themes of jealousy, fate, and romantic love. Marquez abandons jealousy, as there is no evil queen
spinning a trap for the princess. Therefore Marquez s Sleeping Beauty on the Airplane provides a
unique lens for viewing and revisiting the Grimm Brothers Briar Rose. Marquez s story distorts the
original fairy tale, highlighting the power of unrequited physical attraction between strangers. II. Body
Paragraph: Introducing the Lens A. Summary: The narrator is a man traveling from Paris to New York.
While waiting in line to check in, he spies the most gorgeous woman I have ever seen in my life. The
man proceeds to follow the woman, and fate would have it that he picked the seat right next to her.
The woman sleeps the entire time on the plane, giving rise to the sleeping beauty motif. Unlike the
original Briar Rose, though, the narrator never becomes her prince. He does not kiss her to wake her
from the slumber, and they do not live happily ever after. Instead they barely speak. B. As a lens for
Briar Rose, Marquez s Sleeping Beauty on the Airplane is told from the prince s perspective. Only for
Marquez, the prince neither kisses nor wins over the heart of

Equine Nutrition The digestive system of the horse consists of a simple stomach, small intestines,
cecum, large and small colons, rectum and anus. The horse s stomach is comparatively small for its
size. The stomach of an average horse has a holding capacity of about two gallons. This may be the
reason horses eat small but frequent meals. From the stomach food moves to the small intestine, which
is the main site of digestion. The small intestine empties into the cecum. The cecum; along with the

The Principles Qualities Of A Good Teacher
In contrast, the type of inquire based approach that is taught in some of the SKE lessons at University
of Sussex allows the student to understand why a method works and encourage a comprehension of
the mechanics behind the steps taken to solve a problem. Personally, I have noticed that as I gain
confidence in my mathematical ability, these sessions become more enjoyable. Still, to achieve
confidence and be able to follow these lessons, I need to familiarize myself with a method beforehand.
For me this is most effectively achieved by solving series of example problems by a given sequence of
steps before embarking on a journey of understanding the reasoning behind each step. These inquiry
based lessons, therefore, are most valuable when preceded by lessons with more direct instructions
and teacher led demonstrations. Thus, this supports my vision that since all students have their own
preferred method for learning, even if they are not aware of it, the ability to explain a topic in a
number of different ways is one of the principle qualities of a good teacher.
Interestingly, as part of the SKE course I was given the opportunity to spend some time in a college,
observing and assisting in lessons to students that needed to retake their GSCE exams. The main
method of teaching in these classes was purely instrumental, with the goal to equip the students with
the knowledge to pass their GSCE exams but without any deeper understanding of the methods. No
emphasis was put on

Essay On Sport Burnout
Secondary Research Playing tennis, or any sport, year round at a competitive level is strenuous not
only to a developing athlete s body but to their mind. Because of this mental strain, student athletes
that specialize in a certain sport are often susceptible to a phenomenon called sport burnout. For many
elite athletes, burnout is a constant threat due to the hypercompetitive nature of modern sports. There
are many variables and conditions that can lead to sport burnout, but by identifying and combating
these variables, athletes can stay in top physical and mental condition.
The first step to combating sport burnout is to have a full understanding of what it is and what causes
it. The connotation of the word burnout invokes dramatic images that make it seem extra dramatic.
The media also gives more flare to burnout by producing, sensational accounts of the dramatic demise
of high profile sports stars and the decline of young prodigies who fail to fulfill ... Show more content

Athletes that compete at elite levels train year round, often with few breaks, and don t allow adequate
time for recovery. Also, many sports practice regiments are repetitive and lead to boredom due to lack
of variety. Because of this, a study on social interaction and sport burnout concluded that, Burnout is
the final stage of a continuum of overtraining and staleness and the result of a negative response or
maladaptation to training (Goodger, Gorely, Lavallee, Hardwood). Injuries, strain, and physical
exhaustion from overtraining and overworking student athletes can lead them to quit. Furthermore, the
emotional strain from constant competition and the dullness of repetition can lead to burnout. By
forcing young athletes into training regimens that compromise their physical and emotional health,
coaches and parents are feeding into burnout. However, there are strategies for preventing

Catastrophe Research Paper
When an epidemic or catastrophe affects a community or nation depending on the resilience of the the
community there can be different outputs that help limit the aftermaths of the disaster. How the group
of people respond or deal with the situation at hand will have a big impact on how it will affect their
lives moving on. As humans the direr the situation we find ourselves in, the more likely we are to
make a rush or unsound decision. These decisions shape how our lives may be impacted moving on
whether for the duration of the catastrophe or many years to come. When the black death hit Europe in
the late 1340 s to early 1350 s the Europeans did not know how to react or respond to it the because its

The situation was so dire that almost everyone expected death and did not care about any mortal
possession. In some places, people shut themselves in their homes to prevent contact with other people
to prevent themselves from coming into contact with those affected. Some farmers let go of their
livestock and farms they left ripe wheat uncut because they felt there was no need as the world was
coming to an end. Even family members and kinsfolk forsook each other as if their ties meant or blood
meant nothing, parents abandon their children everyone was on their own. To make matter worse the
physicians and doctors that were trying to treat the disease where dying before they could even
diagnose it in some cases the doctors died even before the patients they were treating this made many
doctors flee or shut themselves in their homes. Family members and beloved people were dying and
there were not even graves nor mass graves to bury them nor did anyone shed a tear. The Europeans
lost hope sympathy and empathy among themselves. To make matters worse they had no one to look
up to as Priest refuse to come to hearing of those dying in fear of death and notaries refused to make
wills of those that were dying. Also, monarch and nobles that ruled them fled to safe haven cut off
from the world. This made the Europeans lose faith in almost everything they believed

Democracy Hinders Growth And Its Effect On Economic...
Some scholars have argued that democracy hinders growth as a result of a collective action problem,
while others argue it is the democratic institutions constraining government, and providing individual
property rights which allows for economic growth (Montesquieu, 1748; Smith, 1776; Buchanan and
Tullock, 1962; North and Thomas, 1973; North, 1981, 1990; Hall and Jones, 1999; Easterly and
Levine, 2003; Rodrik, 2007). The former approach focuses on the role of leadership in a
nondemocratic regime, specifically in how a good leader can affect the economic development in a
region. The latter approach focuses on how investor risk aversion that results from the lack of property
rights, corruption, inefficiencies, and political instability in a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The notion goes back to de Tocqueville, but in modern form it has been revived by Barro s empirical
work (1996a and b). Finally, Wintrobe (1998) argues that the authoritarian elite successfully rules by
repressing some in the population while nurturing the loyalty of others. Similarly, the threat of a
rebellion by the opposition compels the dictator to share rents in Gandhi and Przeworski (2006).
The literature on rent seeking suggests a means by which alternatives to collective action can insulate
state actors from societal interests (Mares, 1993: 457). Rent creation implies rent distribution, creating
incentives for rent seeking in the domestic economy; even efficient firms will devote resources either
to capture the rents or to lobby for their elimination (Buchanan, p.35). Bates work on Africa
demonstrates that, rather than simply buying off societal opposition, state actors can distribute rents to
build supportive policy coalitions (1981). A second way for state actors to build a winning policy
coalition is to help potential supporters of state preferences overcome barriers to collective action
through their power to tax and regulate. Here, state actors can force would be free riders to contribute
to the provision of the collective good (Olson, 1965).
Olson (1993, Olson and McGuire, 1996, Olson, 2000) compares the economics of dictatorships

T-Shirts form Lubbok
It is very likely that our T shirts are born near Lubbock, Texas, which is the known to be the cottonest
city in the whole world. Nelson Reinsch is a very successful cotton farmer. Him and his wife Ruth
tend to be seen as people whose minds are opening rather than closing as they approach the ends of
their lives. Producing cotton is no longer the exhausting physical process that it used to be, but Nelson
and Ruth still fight both the impulses of nature and the moods of the markets. Every summer, they
take on the different types of weathers they have to face and compete with cotton farmers from over
70 countries. Nelson Reinsch 1,000 acres can produce about 500,000 pounds of cotton lint if it is fully
planted, which is enough for about 1.3 million T shirts. Him ending his life in the same occupation
that he began with makes a clear statement about the U.S. cotton industry. For over 200 years, The
U.S. has been the certain leader of the global cotton industry. Poor countries have a very small chance
to catch up with all the challenges they face. The U.S. has dominantly occupied first place in cotton
production, cotton exports, farm size, and yields per acre. American industries usually compete with
countries that are similar to them. For example, U.S. forms compete with Japanese automakers,
German chemical companies, and Swiss pharmaceuticals. For climatic reasons, there are few
advanced industrial economies that produce cotton. American cotton growers compete with

Analysis Of Pink Plastic Flamingo
How can a simple pink plastic decoration effectively symbolize the collective culture of the U.S.? In
her essay The Pink Plastic Flamingo: A Natural History , Jennifer Price explains both the impact that
the iconic decoration had on American and what it says about American culture as a whole. Price
expertly crafts the text using powerful diction to explain the significance of the pink flamingo,
allusions to cultural icons to demonstrate the easily influenced nature of Americans, and sarcasm and
irony to explain and highlight America s consumeristic and materialistic culture. Price s carefully
calculated diction and word choice effectively explains America s attachment towards bold statements
of wealth and status and thus, their attraction towards the flamingo. Through usage of such phrases
including ...synonymous with wealth and pizzaz. (Price 7 8), ...cachet of leisure and extravagance.
(Price 19), ...extra fillip of boldness... (Price 20), and ...broiling magenta, livid pink, incarnadine...
(Price 34 35), Price is able to effectively explain the connotations of wealth, status, and boldness that
the plastic flamingo had to Americans through describing the flamingo as how most Americans would
perceive it. Price s powerful diction creates vivid imagery of the flamingo and the underlying
meanings behind it. Using such wording, Price is not only able to explain what the flamingo
symbolizes, but is also able to demonstrate why Americans would be drawn to the simple lawn

Art Therapy And The Creative Process
What is art therapy and does it really work? When one thinks of a therapist and an artist you think of
two vastly different people. With therapy being a scientific, analytical study and art a very free and
creative one, but when the two are combined they create a strong outlet for a lot of youth. Physical and
mental health are very serious matters and are both subjects that children may find hard to talk about.
Traditional therapy in some cases can have good outcomes, but for children it is easier to visualize
their feelings rather that verbally speaking upon them. Children are considered to be visual learners
and traditional therapy does not communicate the same way art therapy can. Many studies have shown
that introducing art therapy into classrooms and hospitals can improve a child s physical and mental
well being. One may still be wondering what is art therapy? to answer that question, here is a
definition Art therapy is the application of the visual arts and the creative process within a therapeutic
relationship, to support, maintain, and improve the psycho social, physical, cognitive and spiritual
health of individuals of all ages. (Malchiodi, C. (2013).). With all this in mind it is hard to believe that
many still do not look at this form of therapy to be taken seriously.
To conduct therapy through art you must have an education behind it considering it is a profession in
mental health . Some think that art therapy can be done by any art

The Tragedy Of United States
On September 11, 2001, one of the most sorrowful events in American history occurred. One whose
impact would be heart felt for years to come. While Americans slept, the lives of many were taken.A
total of four planes were hijacked and used for suicidal acts in American. Two were crashed into the
twin towers in New York, one hit the pentagon right outside of D.C, and the other crashed into a field
in Pennsylvania. On a clear Tuesday morning at 8:45 a.m, an American Airline with 20,000 jet fuel
crashed into the North Tower. Killing Hundreds of people instantly and leaving no hope for others to
escape above the 80th floor of the tower (contained 110 floors), the road to escape was impossible.
New York got hectic. Many believed it was a mistake, as others questioned whether or not it was real
or not.As the people began to evacuate the tower, news began to report on it and began to televise live
images of the accident. Then 18 minutes, after the first attack, United Airlines 175 appeared in the sky.
It turned to the south tower and collided with the tower right near the 60th floor. After a massive
Explosion, debris began to fall on the builds and surroundings around the towers. American and
Americans then knew they were under attack. While Millions were watching as the destruction began
to unfold in New York there was more to come. At 9:45 am, Americans Airline Flight 77 crashed right
into the west side of the pentagon a military headquarter. Killing 125 military people, the 64

Auden Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone, Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone, Silence the pianos and with muffled drum Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come. Again, the author selects a new set of imagery, such as stars, moon, sun, ocean, and wood to remind of the heaven in which the speaker used to live, and then to sweep it off right away. The last statement For nothing now can ever come to any good (16) finally reinforces the speaker s loss and unhappiness. In loneliness, the speaker s love becomes fiercer and more truthful. It is the fierceness and truthfulness that lead the speaker to the last stair of hopelessness. The end of the poem is also the hopeless end of the speaker s life because of nothing ...good. Love makes people become selfish, but it is also makes the world greater. In this poem, the world that the speaker lives and loves is not limited in my North, my South, my East and West / my working week and my Sunday rest (9 10), it spreads to My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song (11). The poem s imagery dominates most of the third stanza giving readers an image of a peaceful world in which everything is in order. However, the last sentence of the stanza is the decisive element. This element not only destroys the inner world of the speaker, but it also sends out the message that love or life is mortal. There is no perfection in the world, so if there is love, there is separation. Through the first three stanzas, its language, its voice, and its imagery are used in an increasing level. • 3. Theories Of Attachment Attachment is defined as an emotional bond that is formed between a child and an individual that is developed throughout the child s development. As a human, it is common for us to form emotional bonds with people we are close with especially to our parents. Most of the studies conducted on the attachment theory mainly focuses on the attachment between infants and their parents, although attachments between adults can also occur. Attachment behaviour is not only observed in humans but also in animals, which is also referred to as imprinting by biologists. This essay will examine the attachment theory, explore Ainsworth strange situation experiments and discuss how infant attachment styles affect later development. Early studies on attachment were conducted on animals and one of the earliest ones was carried out by Konrad Lorenz. His studies eventually led to the discovery of imprinting, which is defined as the behaviour that takes place during a critical period and involves ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Learning theory of attachment proposes that infants form attachments based on the provision of food. In other words, an infant will form attachments to whoever who feeds it. This theory also involves the processes of classical and operant conditioning because infants form attachments by learning that some people provide comforts and responses. The more widely accepted evolutionary theory of attachment states that humans and biologically set to form attachments with others to ensure survival. The theory also claims that it is care and responsiveness which forms attachment instead of food. To explain, the greater the response towards an infant s signal, such as crying, smiling and clinging, the more likely it is to form an attachment with the infant. With complex series of interactions, full attachment may be formed between the caregiver and the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Grande Sonate Pathétique The key of C minor, Beethoven s Sturm und Drang (German for Storm and Stress ) key which many of his most intensive and powerful pieces were written in (5th Symphony, Piano Concerto No.3, for instance). Pathétique one of his three piano sonatas written in the key of C minor, was composed during Beethoven s early period, when he was 27 years old, and published in 1799. It is perhaps Beethoven s earliest composition that has achieved widespread and enduring popularity. • 5. Kabuki Theater Essay Kabuki Theater *No Works Cited Kabuki Theater was created around the year 1600. It was almost around the same time that the English began to form colonies on the American continent. The history of Kabuki is as long as the history of the United States. Kabuki was created by a shrine maiden named Okuni. Okuni was from Izumo Shrine. Her performances in the rive beds of the ancient capital of Kyoto caused a sensation. Soon their scale increased and a number of competing companies started. Early Kabuki was much different from what is seen today. It was consisted mostly of large group dances performed by women. Most of these women acted as prostitutes off stage. Finally the government banned women from the stage in an effort to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was also during this period that the close relationship between Kabuki and the Bunraku puppet theater began. The two would continue to grow while influencing each other. The decades after the Genroku period saw numerous cycles of creative periods followed by refinement. In the early 18th century, the rise of skilled playwrights in the Bunraku puppet theater helped it to deprive Kabuki of popularity for a time. I t was remarked by one observer that it seemed as though there was no Kabuki. Actors responded by adapting puppet plays for the stage and creating stylized movements to mimic the puppets themselves. The late 18th century saw a trend towards realism and the switch of the cultural center from Kyoto and Osaka to Edo. One consequence of this was the change of tastes in onnagata acting. While onnagata trained in Kyoto who had the soft, gentle nature of that city had been valued before, now audiences preferred those who showed the strong pride and nature of Edo women. An increasing audience desire for decadence as seen in the ghost plays and beautification of murder scenes marked early 19th century. The opening of Japan to the West in 1868 affected Kabuki and the rest of the country profoundly. Just when it thought it was free from government restrictions; Kabuki was faced with the challenge to adapt to the changing world. Actors like Ichikawa Danjuro IX tried to raise the ... • 7. NCAA March Madness Regression Report In this project, many different statistics were used to try and predict the winners of the NCAA March Madness tournament. To do this, statistics were tested from the previous year to see if they moderately correlated to winning games. When a stat is moderately correlated, that means it relates to winning. Using a scatter plot, a graph that gives a visual of whether or not a stat is correlated, correlation coefficients were found for each stat. The correlation coefficient is a decimal that shows if a set of numbers is moderately correlated. After finding stats that were the closest to being moderately correlated, a metric was put together that used the best stats to determine which teams will win games. The stat that was the closest to being moderately correlated was the turnover ratio of the teams. Another stat that was almost moderately correlated was RPI, or Rating Percentage Index. This stat uses a team s win percentage, their opponents win percentage, and their opponents opponents win percentage to rank teams. Also, missed field goal percentage was a stat that was used. ... The team with the highest strongly correlated stat would win every game, and there would be no point to the tournament. Strong correlations are an impossibility anyway, because the game of basketball has so many variables. Injuries, crowds, nervousness, and plain luck could make any team win a game, and these variables are unchartable. If one team has the best field goal percentage and the best RPI, but they get nervous, they could lose. Metrics can t count for nervousness. • 8. The Human Struggle In Yasujiro Ozu s Tokyo Story Generations don t battle, they mostly clash into each other. We see this in our very own lives, where parents bring up their past and say, If only you knew how good you have it! . This will forever be somewhat a problem in the past, present, and future of our lives. One generation will always be underestimated or beyond correct then the other. In Yasujiro Ozu s film Tokyo Story we see constant clashing of the elderly and the youth. Ozu s message of how the generations have changed is a way of him defining to us what the human struggle is. Due to the character s actions in the way they treat each other we can pick up on the struggles that they are having and see the human struggle in the film. At the start of the film, Ozu shows us two of the main characters of the film; Shukichi and Tomi. We see them packing their bags to go on a trip. They are going to see their children whom, they haven t seen in a long while. We can see that Ozu is showing us that becoming old is one struggle that most humans fear, but of course it must occur in our lives. When the old slow couple are packing, Shukichi asks Tomi where the inflatable pillow is and Tomi responds and says that she gave it to him. With aging comes forgetfulness and stubbornness; and when Tomi says she gave it to him he starts to say no you didn t, you still have it. Later we see it appear in his bag where he said it wasn t and nothing is said when he finds it. It is simply brushed away with no argument to follow. Ozu shows ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Ritalin Abuse The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) first licensed methylphenidate hydrochloride in 1955 for treating what was formerly known as hyperactivity, attention deficit disorder or ADD. The drug was commonly prescribed in the 1990s when the diagnosis of ADHD became better known and accepted. In 2000, Janssen Pharmaceuticals received approval from the FDA to market Concerta, an extended release form of Ritalin. Approximately two thirds of 6.4 million children presently diagnosed have been prescribed drugs like Ritalin or Adderall (another common CNS stimulant). First synthesized in 1944, the Ritalin formula (at that time commonly known as MPH, from methylphenidate) was improved in 1950, and by 1954 it was being tested on humans. In 1957, Ciba Pharmaceutical Company began marketing MPH as Ritalin to treat chronic fatigue, depression, psychosis associated with depression, narcolepsy, and to offset the sedating effects of other medications. It was used into the 1960s to try to counteract the symptoms of barbiturate overdose. Ritalin has a high potential for abuse when injected it may produce feelings of euphoria. • 10. Ducks Unlimited Vs. Delta Waterfowl Ducks Unlimited vs. Delta Waterfowl Even though there are many ways to conserve waterfowl, there technically are not any wrong ways. However, one could argue that there are better ways. That debate rages on between sportsmen and environmental conservationists alike. There are two big organizations when it comes to conserving waterfowl and wetlands, Ducks Unlimited and Delta Waterfowl. Both groups are able to raise millions of dollars for waterfowl due to their enormous amount of members. However, I feel that Ducks Unlimited is the better conservation group because they can maintain and manage the landscape of an ecosystem effectively, and they are a greater political force compared to Delta Waterfowl. Ducks Unlimited was founded by Joseph ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ducks Unlimited tries to revert these watersheds back to their natural levels by draining the wetlands that have extremely high levels of contaminants in the water. They then clean the soil in the habitat and find a way to decrease the extra contaminates from entering the watershed. Next they will pump healthy water back into the wetlands and install buffer strips that act like a filter that will catch the extra nutrients and silt. The restoration of grasslands and forests is extremely important when it comes to breeding grounds for ducks. Dabbling Ducks use the tall grass found around ponds or in marshes to build nest and raise their young. Diving Ducks will flock to flooded forest areas and build a nest inside the holes of a tree and they will raise their young from above the ground. In recent years these habitats have been reduced significantly for farming and other purposes. In order to restore these habitats Ducks Unlimited must first purchase the land from the landowner. After they have the rights to the property they will begin to make changes to the area so it can be a more suitable ecosystem for waterfowl. When restoring grasslands Ducks Unlimited will replant the local grasses and dig ponds in the area, these actions will help hatchlings survive to adulthood. There were three different reasons that brought Irish to America. The first was the early medieval Christian church. The second was the fight of the Roman Catholic nobility. The third and final was the great potato famine, which was the greatest mass emigration ever. The first and second reason the Irish immigrated was mostly caused by conditions after 1717 that began to grow uneasy. • 12. Non Excludability And Non Rivalrous Consumption Imagine this: a car with a newly repaired suspension and a recent alignment job on four new tires driving on a poorly maintained road filled with holes. In the span of ten minutes, the car has driven over four potholes about half of a foot deep, and the two thousand dollars that were spent on the car are all wasted in that short drive. Public goods are a large part of our life. The condition of the roads we drives on and the sidewalk we walk on, the jobs we get, and the house we can afford to live in are all influenced directly by the public goods. According to Tyler Cowen, professor of Economics at George Mason University, public goods are anything that has non excludability and non rivalrous consumption. In other words, it cannot be kept from those who do not contribute and can be used by multiple people at the same time. In the Atlanta metropolitan area, the distribution of public goods is on vastly different levels. Because public goods are funded through taxes, the income gap in various areas of the metropolitan area plays a huge factor in the distribution of the goods. A wealthier region s tax fund is significantly higher because of the higher price range, especially on everyday goods and the availability of services. One great example is Milton High School located in North Fulton County where income averages are in the sixth digit and Banneker High School in South Fulton with a five digit average. • 15. The Theme Of Love In Nectar In A Sieve The theme of Nectar in a Sieve I have chosen would be love and marriage. Throughout the entire book the presence of love is strongly noticeable. Love is what fuels the strength/bond between most families. And it didn t fail to do the same in the Rukami family. Despite the direct mention of love, love is very prominent throughout the novel. The actions, tones, and emotions of the characters show the underlying presence and strength love carries in this rural Indian community. Love is expressed in many different ways in this novel. There is a sort of unspoken existence of love found within this family s story. Nectar in a Sieve is full of all different kinds of love. Family love, romantic love, love for children, and abstract philosophical love of life and land, are all central to the novel. The ability to endure throughout hardship is one of the most present motifs in the book, and often takes the form of love. Shmoop Editorial Team. Nectar in a Sieve Theme of Love. Shmoop. Before the war most of the workers were males. When the war broke out most of the males had to leave their jobs and go fight in the war. This meant that there were many jobs openings for those who did not have a good job or were not working in the industry they wanted to be in. Women were told it was their patriotic duty to step up and start working. The number of employed women increased to 19 million during the period of war (732). The jobs women were working included everything from operating heavy machinery to driving to taxis and to being nurses helping with the war effort. Women having to work changed the lifestyle of children. Before the war the women usually stayed home to help take care and provide for the children, this changed during the war. The general definition of science is the systematic study of the physical and natural world through observation and experiments. On the contrary, it is much more than that. Much like art, it holds a sense of subjectivity. It is an abstract paradigm that requires the input of one s personal beliefs and values to help it progress. It is much more than just facts and theories of how the world works, but also a prime representation of the ethics and beliefs of the scientists that help mold it today. Science is a database for factual knowledge on the natural world, furthermore, it also incorporates the environment it has created. The environment consists of the particular people, behaviors, and struggles of the scientific community. Even though science incorporates many thoughts and ideas, it does not contain other ideas. Science does not hold a moral category. It does not define what is considered right and what is considered wrong. It merely provides information on certain ideas for further understanding. Any theories and applications of it can lead to other subjects. This idea also applies to what the acquired scientific knowledge is used for. Even though the ideas of complexity and subjectivity are present in both science and art, the concept of aesthetic should only be important for art. Despite requiring organization and general cleanliness, science does not need to pass the eye test. Science should be represented through proper data and its analysis and the non factual features need to have a rational reasoning. To judge or base an idea on its appeal does not equal to ... • 18. The Importance Of Teachers On The Classroom Environment In order to develop strong relationships with my students, colleagues, and parents, I plan to do a variety of little things to yield big results. The relationship that teachers have with students is vital to the classroom environment. In You ve Got to Reach Them to Teach Them, Mary Kim Schrek writes that the human encounter between teacher and student is often a more powerful teaching tool than the academic content, the grade, the data analysis, and the hours spent picking apart the curriculum (Schrek, 2011, p. 5). In order to establish such relationships, I plan to follow a four step procedure that I read about in an article by Nina Sears on the National Education Association s website. Sears article suggests that a teacher get to know their students, individualize the curriculum, watch what they say, and keep trying to reach students (Sears, 2014). As an attempt to get to know my students, I will create a little survey on the first day of school for each student to fill out; questions would include asking my students what their favorite color is or what type of books they like to read. By doing this, I will learn about my students likes and dislikes and how to use their answer in the curriculum. Individualizing the curriculum might seem like a huge undertaking but if a teacher is willing to work with the student, it is not a big deal. For example, I was an auditory learner and I had a teacher who altered the project requirements so I could write a song to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Debate Over Bilingual Education and Immersion Programs In recent years, the debate over whether bilingual education or immersion programs (such as English for Speakers of Other Languages) better serve the needs of limited English proficient (LEP) students in the United States has been heating up. The increasing need for such services insights passionate supporters and opposition to rise up against one another in the fight over which is better. Contrary to popular belief, bilingual education programs were not products of the 1960s. In fact, they aren t even products of the twentieth century. The first state to actually pass a bilingual education law was Ohio, in 1839 (History of Bilingual Education, 1998). The law was for German English bilingual education, and was passed as a result of a strong parental initiative. By the end of the nineteenth century, about a dozen states had passed similar laws, and in many other states such instruction was offered, although it had not been sanctioned by the state. During the World War One era, however, as the loyalty of non English speaking Americans came increasingly under suspicion, many states decided to enact English only instruction, in an attempt to Americanize non English speakers. As a result, during the 1920s the bilingual education program had been almost completely dismantled. In response to the apparent failure of English only instruction, the United States government passed the Bilingual Education Act in 1968, providing federal funds to local school districts, in an attempt to promote the incorporation of native language instruction into school curricula. The government felt that, leaving LEP students to sink or swim in English only classrooms made a mockery of public education (History of Bilingual Education, 1998). It is clear that overall UberX should not be allowed in Toronto. More Toronto citizens are disregarding UberX. People have realized that though the rates may be low the risk of something happening is high, because UberX s drivers are untrained and background checks are limited. Although UberX s rates may be low, the can spike up in times of high demand. During storms and rush hour the fair can double, even triple in cost. The finally reason is that the low rates are unfair to other cab companies, because other cab companies actually hire people as a job, UberX is just for people who want to make extra money. Another reason UberX should not be allowed in Toronto is because the UberX drivers have not had to go through special training to become a cab driver. • 25. Recollection In Meno In Meno, Plato introduces the theory that knowledge comes by recollection. Through the character of Socrates, he presents this idea, and his argument deserves some clarification and explanation. Plato draws a sharp distinction between knowledge, which is certain, and mere opinion, which is not certain. Opinions derive from the shifting world of sensation; knowledge derives from the world of timeless forms, or essences. The Platonic doctrine of recollection is the idea that we are born possessing all knowledge and our realisation of that knowledge is contingent on our discovery of it. Whether the doctrine should be taken literally or not is a subject of continuous debate. The doctrine implies that nothing is ever learned from scratch rather, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is the idea that knowledge requires experiencing something for yourself. For example, Plato thinks that in order to know the way to Larissa it is necessary to have travelled the route yourself. Similarly, he thinks, in order to know a philosophical truth you must have worked through the issue yourself, so that you can grasp how this truth connects with other things that you believe. This notion implies that knowledge is not something that we can absorb, unthinkingly, from people around us; from a certain point of view, it is not incorrect. Furthermore, Socrates sees knowledge to be better than true opinion, because true opinion can escape the mind and thus isn t worth much at least until one ties it down by giving an account of the reason why it matters or why it is true. Therefore, justified true belief is knowledge, because it arises out of recollection. As such, it can be said that Plato believes that knowledge is prized more than correct opinion, and that knowledge differs from correct opinion in being tied down. As well as that, Meno proposes an idea that goodness could be taught if it was knowledge as long as there are teachers to do so. There are none and therefore, virtue cannot be taught and it cannot be knowledge yet it is a good thing. In conclusion, the dispute between Meno and Socrates boils down to the agreement that correct guidance is a result of knowledge and true belief, and is as such both useful and ... Consequently, distinguishing the philosophical beliefs of Socrates from those of Plato and Xenophon is not easy and it must be remembered that what is attributed to Socrates might more closely reflect the specific concerns of these thinkers. The matter is complicated because the historical Socrates seems to have been notorious for asking questions but not answering, claiming to lack wisdom concerning the subjects about which he questioned others. If anything in general can be said about the philosophical beliefs of Socrates, it is that he was morally, intellectually, and politically at odds with many of his fellow Athenians. When he is on trial for heresy and corrupting the minds of the youth of Athens, he uses his method of elenchos to demonstrate to the jurors that their moral values are wrong headed. He tells them they are concerned with their families, careers, and political responsibilities when they ought to be worried about the welfare of their souls . Socrates assertion that the gods had singled him out as a divine emissary seemed to provoke irritation, if not outright ridicule. He didn t want to kill the elephant, but now that he held the rifle, he felt that the Burmese had the power and were forcing him along: Here was I, the white man with his gun, standing in front of the unarmed native crowd seemingly the leading actor of the piece; but in reality I was only an absurd puppet pushed to and fro by the will of those yellow faces behind... Some people may feel hopeless, like their life is now meaningless due to their circumstance, and the hand they have been dealt. When something of this magnitude occurs in ones life, doctor assisted suicide should never be an option, or even a thought on their mind. Human euthanasia is ethically, and morally wrong. The man proceeds to follow the woman, and fate would have it that he picked the seat right next to her. The woman sleeps the entire time on the plane, giving rise to the sleeping beauty motif. Unlike the original Briar Rose, though, the narrator never becomes her prince. He does not kiss her to wake her from the slumber, and they do not live happily ever after. Instead they barely speak. B. As a lens for Briar Rose, Marquez s Sleeping Beauty on the Airplane is told from the prince s perspective. Only for Marquez, the prince neither kisses nor wins over the heart of ... The horse s stomach is comparatively small for its size. The stomach of an average horse has a holding capacity of about two gallons. This may be the reason horses eat small but frequent meals. From the stomach food moves to the small intestine, which is the main site of digestion. The small intestine empties into the cecum. The cecum; along with the large colon; make up the large intestine. Digestion in the large intestine occurs by action of bacteria and protozoa. Crime and Disorder Legislation, Sentences and Orders Pre court measure There are 2 pre court measures that are given to young people before they get taken to court, they want to help give the youths a chance to change their ways. • 41. The Principles Qualities Of A Good Teacher In contrast, the type of inquire based approach that is taught in some of the SKE lessons at University of Sussex allows the student to understand why a method works and encourage a comprehension of the mechanics behind the steps taken to solve a problem. Personally, I have noticed that as I gain confidence in my mathematical ability, these sessions become more enjoyable. Still, to achieve confidence and be able to follow these lessons, I need to familiarize myself with a method beforehand. For me this is most effectively achieved by solving series of example problems by a given sequence of steps before embarking on a journey of understanding the reasoning behind each step. These inquiry based lessons, therefore, are most valuable when preceded by lessons with more direct instructions and teacher led demonstrations. Thus, this supports my vision that since all students have their own preferred method for learning, even if they are not aware of it, the ability to explain a topic in a number of different ways is one of the principle qualities of a good teacher. Interestingly, as part of the SKE course I was given the opportunity to spend some time in a college, observing and assisting in lessons to students that needed to retake their GSCE exams. The main method of teaching in these classes was purely instrumental, with the goal to equip the students with the knowledge to pass their GSCE exams but without any deeper understanding of the methods. No emphasis was put on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Because of this mental strain, student athletes that specialize in a certain sport are often susceptible to a phenomenon called sport burnout. For many elite athletes, burnout is a constant threat due to the hypercompetitive nature of modern sports. There are many variables and conditions that can lead to sport burnout, but by identifying and combating these variables, athletes can stay in top physical and mental condition. The first step to combating sport burnout is to have a full understanding of what it is and what causes it. Also, many sports practice regiments are repetitive and lead to boredom due to lack of variety. Because of this, a study on social interaction and sport burnout concluded that, Burnout is the final stage of a continuum of overtraining and staleness and the result of a negative response or maladaptation to training (Goodger, Gorely, Lavallee, Hardwood). Injuries, strain, and physical exhaustion from overtraining and overworking student athletes can lead them to quit. Furthermore, the emotional strain from constant competition and the dullness of repetition can lead to burnout. By forcing young athletes into training regimens that compromise their physical and emotional health, coaches and parents are feeding into burnout. However, there are strategies for preventing ... • 44. Democracy Hinders Growth And Its Effect On Economic... Some scholars have argued that democracy hinders growth as a result of a collective action problem, while others argue it is the democratic institutions constraining government, and providing individual property rights which allows for economic growth (Montesquieu, 1748; Smith, 1776; Buchanan and Tullock, 1962; North and Thomas, 1973; North, 1981, 1990; Hall and Jones, 1999; Easterly and Levine, 2003; Rodrik, 2007). Finally, Wintrobe (1998) argues that the authoritarian elite successfully rules by repressing some in the population while nurturing the loyalty of others. Similarly, the threat of a rebellion by the opposition compels the dictator to share rents in Gandhi and Przeworski (2006). The literature on rent seeking suggests a means by which alternatives to collective action can insulate state actors from societal interests (Mares, 1993: 457). Rent creation implies rent distribution, creating incentives for rent seeking in the domestic economy; even efficient firms will devote resources either to capture the rents or to lobby for their elimination (Buchanan, p.35). Bates work on Africa demonstrates that, rather than simply buying off societal opposition, state actors can distribute rents to build supportive policy coalitions (1981). A second way for state actors to build a winning policy coalition is to help potential supporters of state preferences overcome barriers to collective action through their power to tax and regulate. Here, state actors can force would be free riders to contribute to the provision of the collective good (Olson, 1965). Nelson Reinsch is a very successful cotton farmer. Him and his wife Ruth tend to be seen as people whose minds are opening rather than closing as they approach the ends of their lives. Producing cotton is no longer the exhausting physical process that it used to be, but Nelson and Ruth still fight both the impulses of nature and the moods of the markets. Every summer, they take on the different types of weathers they have to face and compete with cotton farmers from over 70 countries. Nelson Reinsch 1,000 acres can produce about 500,000 pounds of cotton lint if it is fully planted, which is enough for about 1.3 million T shirts. • 47. Art Therapy And The Creative Process What is art therapy and does it really work? When one thinks of a therapist and an artist you think of two vastly different people. With therapy being a scientific, analytical study and art a very free and creative one, but when the two are combined they create a strong outlet for a lot of youth. Physical and mental health are very serious matters and are both subjects that children may find hard to talk about. Traditional therapy in some cases can have good outcomes, but for children it is easier to visualize their feelings rather that verbally speaking upon them. Children are considered to be visual learners and traditional therapy does not communicate the same way art therapy can. Many studies have shown that introducing art therapy into classrooms and hospitals can improve a child s physical and mental well being. One may still be wondering what is art therapy? to answer that question, here is a definition Art therapy is the application of the visual arts and the creative process within a therapeutic relationship, to support, maintain, and improve the psycho social, physical, cognitive and spiritual health of individuals of all ages. (Malchiodi, C. (2013).). With all this in mind it is hard to believe that many still do not look at this form of therapy to be taken seriously.
