Cultural Experience
Describe
In preparation for this reflection, I began by thinking about what cultural event I would most like to
attend, what would work for the assignment and what would also benefit me in my personal life by
actually forcing me out of my comfort zone to experience things I never have before. Because
Christianity is such a huge part of my life I immediately thought I would want to do something based
on another religion since I ve never really gone out of my religious comfort zone, but for this
assignment I chose to go to a gay bar. The reason I chose to do this was because I have been raised as
a Christian, I grew up in a very conservative town and while I ... Show more content on

I think it would have a been a very different experience if we had gone when we were 21 and could
drink at the bar, I think it would have changed the experience a little bit. We arrived at the bar at a
little bit after 10 which is when the dance floor opened and stayed until around 1 in the morning.
Examine
The part of this experience that was the most compelling to me was almost the sense of community
that I felt was just there between the gay community. Like there were a lot of groups of people there
that night that didn t even know each other, but you would never guess that by the way they acted like
they had been friends for years. Even towards me and my roommate who they didn t know, was just
some straight stranger walking in and observing them they were so nice and accepting. They were
willing to let us into their environment, knowing that we were not a part of it and I felt no judgment or
anything. My fears that I had felt earlier in the day before going were put to rest, while some people
were unusually friendly to me no girls really tried to hit on me, which was really relieving.
As mentioned above, the most shocking thing I noticed was the community, or the way they socialized
with and accepted themselves and each other. I think

Oliver Johnson Research Paper
Oliver Johnson an 18 year old, African American boy, who grew up in the streets of Pompano Beach,
Fl. Never knowing his father he relied on the streets, gangsters, and hustlers to learn how to be a man.
At the age of nine Oliver was selling drugs. His mother was a drug addict who preyed on the love that
Oliver had for her to score her free drugs. Oliver became a man before he would ever knew the joys of
being a child. Oliver paid bills, brought groceries, cooked food, went to school and kept a perfect
attendance. Even though Oliver was deep in the game of drug dealing, and had a crazy home life; he
was a very smart student and very respectful to everyone who crossed his path. There were always
some older men in the neighborhood who knew

Pros And Cons Of Stereotyping
The topic pertaining to stereotypes and their kinship with human impulse has been an issue, as well as
a solution to society for a long time. A stereotype can be defined as a regular cognitive process,
usually automatic, that saves time and effort on making decisions about an individual or group
(Devine Monteith, 1999; Operario Fiske, 2001). Stereotyping gives insight about human decision
making abilities, as well as impulsive thoughts and ideas about groups and people. In society they are
seen as a problem, but the question is can we ever truly eliminate them? The solution to such a
question comes from researching to see if stereotypes are hardwired into our brain as a first response
or something that we have control over. Therefore, can the primary impulse, which is stereotypical, be
overcome, or is it out of our control? Stereotyping is acquired throughout an individual s life by
learning from society. This concept is shown by the experiment of Bargh et al. (1996). Bargh created
three groups, and had each of them individually complete word puzzles. The first groups work puzzles
had words that evoked rude feelings, such as bother and disturb. The second group had a word puzzle
with politeness such as courtesy and behaved. The third group had neutral words in their puzzle. When
they were finished the puzzle, they were instructed to find the researcher. However, the researcher was
intentionally in a conversation, which he stayed in for ten minutes. The

Black Colleges And Universities ( Hbcus ) Essay
Introduction
Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are institutions of higher education in the
United States that were established before 1964. As amended by The Higher Education Act of 1965, a
part B institution refers to any Historically Black college or university that was established prior to
1964, whose principal mission was, and is, the education of Black Americans, and that is accredited
by a nationally recognized accrediting agency or association determined by the Secretary to be a
reliable authority as to the quality of training offered or is, according to such an agency or association,
making reasonable progress toward accreditation. Though in 1837 Cheyne University of Pennsylvania
and 1854 Lincoln University (Pennsylvania) had been established for Black education, Black Colleges
and Universities became recognized by the United States Government in the 1890 s.
The second Morrill Land Grant Act specified that states using federal higher education funds must
provide an education to Black students, either by opening the doors of their public universities to those
of African descent, or by establishing schools specifically to serve them. Integration for white public
and private institutions was completely out of the question due to the substantial racial divide within
the United States so, many Southern states created a completely separate set of institutions serving
Blacks. Thus were born many public and private Black colleges. Of the 100+ HBCU s

William Wordsworth s Analysis Of I Wandered Lonely As A Cloud
The poem was written in the year 1802. It was first published in Poems in Two Volumes, in
1807. The very starting line of the poem I wandered lonely as a cloud informs the poet s
profound sentiments of being left alone. It was actually the death of his brother John that led him
to loneliness . We should remind the readers that this poem was not a result of imagination.
Dorothy, Wordsworth s sister provides us an explanation of the occasion which inspired
Wordsworth to produce this masterpiece:
When we were in the woods beyond Gowbarrow Park, we saw a few daffodils close to
waterside. Thus the poem is a result of actual visualization rather than imagery .
In English literature, Wordsworth and his friend, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, ... Show more content on

Setting of the Poem:
Wordsworth may be at discomfort in human multitude but not amidst the objects (crowd) of
Nature. Nature permeates the entire poem. Phrases like a crowd, a host, continuous as the stars,
they stretched in never ending lines, ten thousands saw eye at a glance presents deep
implications. The poet says: I wondered lonely as a cloud that floats on the high o er Wales and
hills. Daffodils, an everyday found flower has been portrayed in magical verses and blended with
transcendental romanticism. Even the daffodils outdid the sparkling waves in glee and left an
everlasting mark in the mind of the readers of this poem.

The Importance Of Artificial Intelligence Technology
Artificial Intelligence technology is outpacing the must needed regulation that is paramount in the
protection of humans. The need for such regulation is determined by researching current trends in
robotics, autonomous weapons, computing and more. Benefits and dangers are logically weighed
while approaching the questions posed by the author. The authors conclusions stemmed from taking
consideration to the thoughts of world leaders and influential individuals in the related fields of
technology. The research brings forth possible solutions such as regulating A.I technology and
merging man and machine. One possible solution wins in favor of the other. Introduction Artificial
intelligence is the future of mankind; whoever becomes the leader in this sphere will become the ruler
of the world. Many think of a paranoid doomsday theorist pressing the issue of how he or she believes
one day artificial intelligence may destroy humanity while reading the above quote. However, such
remarks are not to be taken lightly when relayed by one of the world s most influential men and the
leader of the second most powerful military on the planet. According to the June 15, 2017, CNN
article, Who Putin Thinks Will Rule the World Vladimir Putin relayed this ominous message on a live,
nationwide broadcast in Moscow. Putin s remarks are the first of such comments regarding the
importance of A.I (artificial intelligence) made by any world leader in recent times. The remarks

My Favorite Beauty
Growing up, I never really had a favorite anything. I didn t have a favorite cartoon character that I was
obsessed with, as most children around the age of eight are. I didn t have a favorite outfit or shoes that
I wanted to wear to just about any occasion. Although I did have a favorite food, mac and cheese,
when it came to things like that it was just whatever I liked, I wanted. One day my mom and I were
going shopping with my aunt. It was sunny outside so I wore some faded jean shorts, a striped pink
and black tank top, and my black and pink Heely s. My mom had on a pair of jeans, a black T shirt,
and some black Michael Kors flip flops. It was a 25 minute drive from my house to Sawgrass Mills
Mall so I fell asleep on the ride there. My aunt met us at the front of the mall. As we walked in, you
could feel the temperature change. There were people walking everywhere. I could even see some
people sitting and getting massages because they ve probably been walking around all day. You could
hear some people on the phone, some just having friendly conversations with people they probably
didn t even know, and even a baby crying. We had been in the mall for about an hour and wasn t even
halfway through the building. Went in a few clothing and shoe stores and left with at least three bags.
The last shoe store we went into was Footlocker which is where I got a pair of pink Nikes. When
walking out of the store, we could hear the voices of children coming from next door so we went

The Contribution Of The Civil Rights Movement
Many people are honored for their leadership, impact, legacy, achievements and hospitality. At
Columbus State University, there are multiple people that should be considered for an honor. Mary
Blackmon started women s athletics at CSU. Frank Brown , former president at CSU, transformed
CSU from a commuter college into the massive university it is today. Thomas Whitley was the
founding president at CSU. Carson McCullers was a well known author in Columbus. All these people
did something great for CSU. However, I believe John Townsend, the first African American student
at CSU, is the one who deserves a statue .
The Civil Rights movement was an incredible time in our history to see a drastic change in society.
The movement pushed laws to end racial segregation and discrimination , causing schools to be
integrated. Because of that movement, it allowed John Townsend to be the first African American to
enter what is now called Columbus State University. Being an African American myself, if it wasn t
for him being the first African American at Columbus State University, I wouldn t be able to attend
here today.
In my criteria of legacy and impact, John Townsend scored highest in both categories. An impact is
when a new idea comes and influence people from all around. A legacy is when something great
happens and remembered for generations .Because he was the first African American student at CSU,
it paved the way for a plethora of African American students to come to

The Atomic Bombings Of Hiroshima And Nagasaki
It has been seventy years since the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the end of the
Second World War in the Pacific Theatre. However, the unconditional surrender that was favored by
the Allies was only accepted by Japan after the Soviet Union entry into the Greater East Asia War and
the nuclear devastation of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It is a common myth in the Western world that the
nuclear bombs Little Boy and Fat Man caused Japan to surrender and in turn saved the lives of
thousands of American soldiers that were about to embark upon Operation Downfall, the invasion of
Japan. However, decades after the war the idea that the nuclear bombing of Japan was a military
necessity is not taken at face value as it once was. Any historian who would explore the situation in
the Pacific theater will find that most of the actions taken by the warring nations during the end were
in reality very political in nature. This means that the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
have a political necessity instead of a military one. This political necessity was which nation would
win the surrender of the Japanese Empire. The United States of America and the Soviet Union were
racing each other for the surrender of Japan for different reasons. The Soviets wanted to make sure
that their prize promised to them at the Yalta Conference would be upheld. On the other hand the
Americans wanted to win Japan s surrender before the Soviets could launch an invasion on Japanese

Hosea Research Paper
Did you know that the book in bible reveals the personality of the prophet? It explains to us that we
should carefully read the bible and think about it. I read a book about Hosea but it was from Gomer s
perspective view and it contains a little bit of fiction. After I read the book about Gomer and Hosea, I
started to be interested in Hosea and that s why I chose Hosea over any other prophets. As I write
about Hosea in this essay, I want to know about his relationship with others, God s plan for him, what
he had done during his life time and other things as well. Hosea was the first minor prophet. It does
not mean that he is less important than other major prophets, but because they have shorter books that
s why it calls Minor Prophets. The book of Hosea shows really well about Hosea s true personality so
that we can define him very emotional, responsible to his duty, loyal, and show unconditional love for
his wife. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Situation Between Latvia And Russia During World War...
The situation between Latvia, Germany, and Russia during World War II was complex and that
complexity left many Latvians vulnerable to Stalinist repression when the Soviet government first
ordered deportations in 1941 and when deportations began again when Soviet occupation of Latvia
returned in the October of 1944. With the signing of the German Soviet Non aggression Pact in 1939,
the Soviet Union gained a sphere of influence over west Poland and the Baltic States. On June 16th,
1940, the Latvian government received an ultimatum from the Soviet government. The Soviet
government instructed them to form a new government that would comply with the implementation a
Soviet Latvian mutual assistance pact and to allow the Red Army unrestricted entry and movement
throughout Latvia or have it done so by force. The following day, June 17th, the Red Army entered
Riga, the capital and the Latvian government was dissolved.
The Soviet government became concerned with resistance to their occupation of Latvia during the
spring of 1941. In May 1941, Beria agreed with Stalin on a draft decree of the Council of People s
Commissars and the Communist Party and the Communist Party Central Committee On taking action
on cleansing the Lithuanian SSR of anti Soviet, criminal and socially dangerous elements (the Latvian
and Estonian Republics were added to Lithuania at this stage of coordination. With this decree, the

Overcoming Adversity In A Trip For Mrs. Taylor
Everyone has experienced adversity at one point in their life, whether it be a final exam or staying
strong while you re going through a rough time. As for many, they assume that running from their
problems is the easy way out when in fact running from your problems may seem easy at the time, but
is a race that can never be won. Instead, we need to face our problems straight on, because the feeling
of conquering a challenge gives us an unexplainable feeling of success. Through the character Mrs.
Taylor, Author Hugh Garner depicts how facing hardships head on, leads to the feeling of
accomplishment in his story, A Trip For Mrs. Taylor . Based on the story and a personal example it s
evident that when an individual faces adversity, they strive to overcome challenges which leads to the
rush of success. In the short story, A Trip for Mrs. Taylor, author Hugh Garner uses Mrs. Taylor to
demonstrate when Mrs. taylor is lonely, how going on a trip helps her to overcome adversity through
the smallest interactions with others which brings upon Mrs. Taylor the feeling of success. From the
start, a reader can infer that Mrs. Taylor feels lonely and goes on a trip to fill the void of solitude. On
the way to the cathedral like station concourse, a young soldier sympathetically helps Mrs. Taylor with
her bags. The soldier was the first person outside of Mrs. Connell and the man at the grocery store,
that she had spoke to all week (Garner3) inferring that Mrs. Taylor is isolated and

William The Conqueror Case Study
Equity has brought benefits to many litigants who would otherwise have been severely disadvantaged
by the common law. Discuss, with reference to decided cases. William the Conqueror found England
with no single system of law common to the whole country. The law was mainly sets of customary
rules which differed from area to area. For example, in one area you could get away with stealing, in
another it would be seen as crime. There was no such thing as The English Legal System until William
s invasion in 1066. William developed the legal system and introduced many rules. William preserved

The second remedy is specific performance in which the court compels a party to fulfill a previous
agreement, as in the case of [Wrath v Tyler]. Rectification which is the amendment of documents
which previously did not express its true intention such as in the case of [Re Posner] in which the
testator was allowed to rectify his will to reflect his true intentions, is another form of remedy. The
fourth remedy is rescission where a contract is nullified, thus allowing two parties to return to their
original positions prior to the agreement as seen in [Tumstem v Bhanderi] On the other hand, equity
also introduced modern remedies which are Mareva Injunction and the Anton Piller order. The former
which is freezing order where the court has the authority to restrain a person from transferring his
assests away from the court s jurisdiction such as to another country is first established in the case of
[Mareva v International Bulkcarries]. The latter is the search order granting access into another s

drawings to the rival company hence court granted the Anton Piller order to search his house. Last but

maxims is He who comes to equity must

Differentiating Between Market Structures Of Wal Mart
Differentiating between market structures
The structure of a market is defined by the number of firms in the market, the existence or otherwise
of barriers to entry of new firms, and the interdependence among firms in determining pricing and
output to maximize profits. Retail sales are indicators of microeconomic conditions presented in a
given area at a particular place in time. Since Sam Walton opened his first Wal Mart store, Wal Mart
has been making ripples throughout the micro economies of America. Wal Mart s market structure is
typical of most of our nation s largest corporations in that they are an oligopoly (Brown, 2010).
According to Colander (2010), An oligopoly is a market structure in which there are only a few firms

Sticky prices are the result of an informal collusion behavior and correlates to a kinked demand curve
as one reason firms do not lower their prices to outsell their competition. Any increase or decrease in
price will be met by their competition, causing the less elastic portion of the demand curve and its
corresponding marginal revenue curve to cause a kink in the demand curve. This kink causes the
marginal revenue curve to have a gap and is resultant from the theory of sticky prices (Colander,
2010). Wal Mart would be considered a monopolistic structure in the retail market. Wal Mart is very
aggressive in beating out the smaller competition and in advertising efforts. With Wal Mart offering
such low prices it makes it hard for other retailers to compete and hinders sales drastically for smaller
companies. Wal Mart was quoted to be a monopolistic beast and strong opinions about the
organization are everywhere (Bloomberg, 2013).
There are different classifications of markets and the structure of a business determines which
classification it will fall into. Markets are divided according to the composition of the business and
what it provides to the specific market. Business composition is determined by the structure of market
characteristics, and this helps determine level and area of competition. The characteristics in a market
with the most concentration focus on number of purchasers and retailers, level in which a product has
a substitute, price,

Comparing Regan And Goneril In Shakespeare s King Lear
The two eldest daughters of King Lear, are portrayed as villains from the beginning of the novel. Both
Regan and Goneril are very much alike, both being wicked and cruel. From the first act of the play in
the most flattering of love to their father for part of the kingdom, to the last act in the poisoning of
Regan and suicide of Goneril; they progressively become worse as the play develops. Goneril, the
eldest of King Lear s three daughters, is a ruthless, amoral, and jealous woman. She takes pride in
being the eldest sister and is aware Regan tries to follow in her footsteps. Usually, it is Regan
attempting to always out do Goneril in an attempt to be better than her. It can be seen in Act 1 Scene 1
when King Lear is asking his daughters to tell him the amount of love they have for him. Goneril
starting on line 53 begins by saying, Sir, I love you more than words can weld the matter; dearer than
eye sight, space, and liberty...beyond all manner of so much I love you (Act 1 Scene1). Regan

It would result in severe disability and require total dependence on someone else. Sight is so important
to a person because it gives an individual the majority of their sensory stimulation, taking it away

Analysis Of Gulliver s Travels By Jonathan Swift
Aldous Huxley once said, There are things known and there are things unknown, and in between are
the doors of perception (The Personal Path to Virtue 20). Perception is present in every aspect of
society, for humans decipher receptive actions into comprehensible and consolidated views of the
Earth around them. From art, to music, and even to literature, everyone has his or her own perception,
one that can change and develop dependent upon everyone s own vision. In the novel, Gulliver s
Travels by Jonathan Swift, the reader will find their perception of the themes and the characters in the
book drastically different in the beginning of the story than at the end. When one first lays their hands
on a copy of Gulliver s Travels, the ideas and themes they would believe to be most obvious and
important would include adventure, discovery and the development of civilization. They would simply
formulate these ideas from the title and cover of the novel. However, as one reads the story and
divulges into the deeper meaning of Gulliver and his travels, he or she will find that the limits of
human understanding and the individual comparisons of nature versus society are much more present
in the novel than are adventure and discovery. Change is the underlining focus of this story. From the
themes to the actions of the characters and even to the motifs of the story, many facets of the story
change from the first to the last page due to the overwhelming significance of adventures that

Managing Conflict Essay example
Effective managers are successful within the workgroup and organization when a style is used to
resolve a conflict. People do experience conflict in their lives. There has always been a lot of interest
in how to manage conflict once it appears in the open, and that is important. What is not so common is
a concern for preventing unnecessary conflict, so it does not start in the first place. Managers are
capable of using all five resolutions skills to deal with conflict in the workplace.
Organizations of all types need good managers in order to survive when dealing with conflicts that
will occur within a workplace. Many people holding management positions will be confronted with
issues between two people or two groups ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some people attempt to avoid conflict by postponing it, hiding their feelings, changing the subject,
leaving the room or quitting the project. Sometimes, doing nothing is a smart thing to do, providing
the decision to do nothing is well thought out and based on an analysis of the situation. Although
avoidance might appear to be a cop out, it can sometimes be the most appropriate response. A
common means of avoiding conflict is to be secretive. This can be done by employees and managers.
The notion is that if no one knows what is being done, there can be little conflict. By being secretive,
one may delay conflict and confrontation, but when it does surface it will have far more negative
emotions attached to it than would have been the case if things were more open. It may be wise to
avoid a conflict if the issue is minor or if the potential conflict partner is a formidable opponent. Not
every conflict justifies your attention. One should not routinely withdraw from conflicts because it
provides only a temporary fix and sidesteps the underlying problem. An accommodating manager is
also known as a smoothing or obliging manager (Hemmer, 2003). Accommodating is allowing the
desires of the other party to prevail. This resolution reflects low assertiveness and high
cooperativeness. Accommodating may be an appropriate conflict handling strategy when a manager
wants to show reasoning, develop performance, create good will, and to keep peace.

instance, in the case of 2000, the introduction of tax on services and products affected the operations
of Flight Centre because of incorporation of the tax of about 10 percent in their prices. This is critical
in the determination of new pricing mechanisms with the aim of enhancing revenues and profits at the
end of the financial year. Instability reduces the operations of the organization due to insecurity of the

Power And Wealth In The Great Gatsby By F. Scott Fitzgerald
F. Scott Fitzgerald s The Great Gatsby set in the 1920 s is a time where the opportunities seemed
endless. Endless chances to reinvent oneself in a way that pleases said person as well as the rest of
society. Power and wealth was the dream of all who who played along. As for Jay Gatsby his rise to
fame and fortune was to fill out an image of himself he had envisioned long ago. His story he told of
himself was simply a story, and the future in the story, a fantasy. Gatsby told Nick Carraway that he
was raised in San Francisco and went to Oxford University as it was family tradition . He then went
on to tell Nick that he inherited quite a lot of money when his parents died. This money he then spent
on traveling and other non necessities.

Wild Plums Essay
In today s society people are judged primarily on their looks and the amount of money that they have.
As we take a look into the short story, Wild Plums , one can agree that the primary purpose of this
short story is to illustrate how people believe they are inferior to others because of the way they look
or act. The main family in the story thinks they are too good to go pick wild plums with the slumps
and they think they are too good to be around them.
When the little girl talks about visiting the Slump s at their home, she says that they didn t use chairs
but rather sat on the floor or on boxes. When they describe how the slumps lived it always sounds
mediocre to the way they their family lives.

The mother and father were also surprised when they learned that Mrs. Guare, the schoolteacher,

The Slumps would come by and offer to take the children and the parents to go plummin, but the
parents always refused to go.
All you tins pile in, Mrs. Slump called to us. Were goin plummin on the Niniscaw and stay all night.
The youngins can go wadin . There ain t no work drivin you this time a year, so just pile in. We got

he would say, I tole you they all wouldn t go, but you would stop, and Mrs. Slump would answer,
There now, Paw, you hush!
They wouldn t even let their daughter go along if the parents weren t with them. The parents must
have thought the Slumps were just awful people who couldn t take care of anyone.
At the end of the story the Slumps go riding by with their buggy halfway filled with wild plums and
kids began to throw them at the little girl in the road. The mother refused to let her eat them and
scolded her for picking them up, then allowed her to eat them after they were washed thoroughly. The

Native American Mascots Research Paper
Sports teams across the country are all represented by a mascot. A mascot is used in a variety of ways,
but mainly to represent a team s identity and motivate both players and fans alike to bring out the
competitive spirit. Many teams are represented with normal names and themes, while some are more
controversial such as the Kansas City Chiefs, Chicago Blackhawks, Cleveland Indians, Florida State
Seminoles, Atlanta Braves, and Washington Redskins (to name a few). A prickly topic for years, even
decades the usage of Native American mascots continues to strike controversy in fans, players,
alumni, as well as disinterested fans. Depending on who you talk to, it s a stain on the organizations it
affects or is it a way of honoring those who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The reality is that most people, especially fans and some Native Americans themselves want to keep
these names. Again, depending on who you talk to keeping these names pay tribute and honor those
who have come before us. An example of this is the team Atlanta Braves. When you think of the
meaning brave, you see a person who is courageous and a person who will face and endure danger or
pain. Without teams using these names, people would not know the history or background of some
Native American tribes. We can say the actions of some mascots may be questionable or over the top
at times but they are not intended to poke fun at the Native Americans for their culture or beliefs, they
are only used for the spirit of the game and to get the crowd pumped up. In my own opinion, I do not
think Native American mascots should be discontinued. Discontinuing these symbols or nicknames
would bring a lot of pain to sponsors, supporters, the sports club, and its fans. Bottom line, the teams
that utilize these Native American themes or symbols do not utilize them in a stereotypical or racial
way. In fact, they mascots are used in a way to honor Native Americans and to remember them

It s Time to Make Drugs Legal for Personal Use Essay
It s Time to Make Drugs Legal for Personal Use
Drugs are such a controversy and people have such strong opinions about whether they should be
legal or illegal. I don t have a strong opinion on this topic; I m easily swayed. For the most part
though, I think that they should be legalized because people do it anyways and if they were legal the
government could regulate their use and sale more, the government should be receiving the profits of
the drug business rather than dealers, marijuana has most of the same effects as cigarettes, and it s
been proven over and over how prohibition doesn t seem to work.
Each year, the government wastes $20 billion dollars on the war against drugs, but it doesn t seem to
do any good (Liberty For ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The most important thing for me is that people do it anyways; they always have and most likely
always will. Drug prohibition has not stopped 30 million people from trying cocaine and 60 million
people from trying marijuana. Prohibition also has not stopped the number of heroin users from
increasing by 150% and the number of cocaine users from increasing by 10,000%. Moreover,
prohibition has not kept drugs out of the hands of children: in 1988 54% of high school seniors
admitted to having tried illicit drugs; 88% said it was fairly easy or very easy to obtain marijuana: and
54% said the same about cocaine (Boaz 229). Nobody can deny these facts, and these are even facts
from the times where the war on drugs was passing stricter laws. None of the laws seemed to make a
difference accept if you get caught with drugs, you have a longer sentence. The sentence for marijuana
possession usually averages longer than a murder sentence. I really don t think it s worse to have
marijuana than kill another human being; that doesn t even begin to make sense to me.
I think that, like many other things in history, drugs will someday be legal. I mean coffee, gin, and
tobacco all used to be illegal, but now all are in regular use in the United States. The Netherlands, who
is the only country I know to legalize marijuana, surprisingly has a lower percentage of 10th graders
who have tried marijuana when compared to the United States. Maybe people wouldn t do it

Summary Of The Middle English Breton Lay Sir Freine
The following close reading concerns itself with the Middle English Breton Lay Sir Degaré, though
speculative, the poem s composition has been dated to the 14th Century and the poem survives in six
manuscripts and three early printed editions, it is a romance of high antiquity, preserved in the
Auchinleck MS. Some suggest that the poem takes clear inspiration from the Middle English
translation of Marie de France s Le Fresne: Lay le Freine. Moreover, some propose that Sir Degaré is
more accurately described as an emulation, believing it to be more an imitation made up from a
variety of stories, as it borrows not only motifs but direct phrasing from Lay Le Freine. Not only do
both texts share a similar rhyming scheme, rhyming couplets, and semi alliterative lines, they are also
similar in relation to common genre conventions. In this respect, the Breton Lay has been understood
by many to be the predecessor to the modern fairy tale, and indeed, Sir Degaré is enveloped in themes
such as love, the supernatural, and critically, the correlation between the two constructs of gender,
which themselves are manifested in the modern day fairy tale.
The opposition is apparent between the two constructs of gender, man was glad a blithe , (joyful)
(155) whereas the princess siked an sorewed swithe. (sickened and sorrowed) (156) This disparity
underlines the attitudes that permeate this text, considering the atrocity that has occurred, it is
sickening to comprehend. Alluringly,

Value Of Shame In Nathaniel Hawthorne s The Scarlet Letter
Carissa Larriuz
Mrs. Gordon
English 11
29 April 2018
The Value of Shame In modern culture, it is often used as a great threat and punishment to be publicly
shamed, multiple judges of the court even sentence this as a punishment. When the term is used
loosely, it appears an inappropriate alternative to jail time, yet when speculated closely, public shame
is in some ways worse than being put away in a cell. This can be argued due to the behavior spectators
display with involvement in the situation firsthand. I believe that although in some cases public shame
could be excessive and not fit the crime correctly, that public shaming is an effective and influential
form of punishment for certain crimes.
Primitively, According to the 8th ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This concept has existed almost as long as humans themselves, right from the beginning of creation in
the story of The Garden of Eden. Adam and Eve were tempted into committing the first crime known
to man and once committed they were punished publicly by being unclothed. This nakedness and
sense of vulnerability was a form of public shame because their entity was exposed and they were
provided this punishment as a reflection of self assessment. This similar idea is conveyed in Nathaniel
Hawthorne s novel The Scarlet Letter. In the most basic sense, Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale and
Hester Prynne represent the primary characters in the biblical story of the Garden of Eden, Adam and
Eve. The first scaffold scene, where Hester stands alone with her baby in her arms, in terms of
similarities between the story and the biblical one of Adam and Eve, plays on the biblical fact that Eve
is said to have eaten the fruit first and then convinced Adam to eat it afterward. The community s
belief that women are, by nature, sinful, is backed up by the interpretation of the biblical story and
therefore shown in their acts of ridicule to Hester alone. Overall, the use of public humiliation as a
way of instilling social discipline in in many ways highly effective when used suitably. It may lack
effectiveness if the offender in question

The Causes Of Learning Disabilities
In the early 1960 s Samuel Kirk founded the term learning disabilities. This came about after he had
visited with a group of parents to discuss why their children seem to have small amounts of success
even when they can understand and comprehend things just like other children. As a result of this
meeting the Learning Disabilities Association of America was formed (Pullen, 27). Learning
Disabilities (LD) are created when there is a space between a person s ability to think and reason and
not understanding based on the results from tests. There are a few reasons why LD can occur. Boys are
more prone than girls, African Americans and Latinos are more prone than Whites and Asians. Most
adolescents with LD struggle with reading. They also have difficulties interacting with others,
expressing their feelings and understanding the feelings of other. Last, the amount of teacher s
involvement with adolescents can reduce the dropout rate (Arnett; Pullen). First, it is important to
know the gender, genetics and behavior that contribute to LD. For every 1 female there are 3 males
that have LD. Even though the reason for this is not clear, there are 2 things that can contribute to this
outcome. First, is the higher rate of genetics if an adolescent has a monozygotic twin, parent or parents
with LD. In this case, the likelihood of the other twin or future children having LD is pretty high. As a
result, this is due to the brain functioning and processing in different ways than people

Short Essay On The Reconstruction Era
The Reconstruction Era began in 1865. This time period consisted of rebuilding the United States after
the Civil War. Slaves were set free and did not have the slightest idea on how to survive on their own.
Blacks were never legitimately free, with lack of resources and racist laws, the slaves had no choice
but to return to their masters. Blacks were set free, but their freedom was extremely limited due to the
strictness of racist laws. The laws were keeping blacks from bettering themselves to be able to survive
on their own without having to depend on whites. The laws were completely controlling freedmen s
liberty and lives. Curfews were set in order to keep slaves from getting together and forming groups.
The racists whites wanted to keep blacks from being able to protest or march for blacks rights. The
Louisiana Black Codes stated that no freed man who was not in the military could not have any
firearms or weapons of any kind. Without guns blacks would not be able to protect themselves. Blacks
would go hungry because they would not be able to hunt for food to survive unless blacks remained
dependent on whites for food and shelter. Money is also needed to go out and ... Show more content

The emergency medical services are proven to be slower in small rural areas than in a bigger city,
because most of the small town rural areas emergency response services are volunteer. While judging
the amount of coverage an emergency response station covers, government officials look at the
amount of people in a given area, not the mileage that area may cover. My hometown is mostly
farmland, with a population of seven hundred and fifty people, the farmland covers twenty five to
thirty miles in each direction. This may not sound like much land to cover, but when it comes to
saving lives, time is of the essence.
When coming up with what land the emergency services in the area covers, government officials
calculate the land in a area and how much taxes the land have in a given year and whether or not they
can afford emergency medical services. If a small town can not afford the cost of a full time medical
service, the government then puts the small town in the hands of the neighboring community that can
afford the emergency medical services. Sometimes the neighboring emergency medical services will
establish a volunteer EMT station in the small town to try and get as many emergency calls answered
as quickly as possible. Emergency medical systems are evaluated according to how they respond to
and treat out of hospital cardiac arrest patients (Sunarin, Mayorga, and Mclay 134). The rural and small
town areas are not able to respond in time do to lack of resources,

Fighting Back
Fighting Back The Holocaust was one of the most horrendous and atrocious event in history. Millions
of Jews were killed without even a second thought. The Nazis tried to suppress, demoralize, and
dehumanize the Jews in every way possible. First, the Jews were forced into overcrowded ghettos,
then to concentration camps where they were killed systematically or worked to their deaths. As the
news of Jews being sent to death camps became known, the Jews began to rise up against the Nazis.
They refused to let an invading army destroy their homes, friends, and family. The strength of the
resistance against the Nazis was especially seen in the Warsaw Uprising. The horrors of what the Jews

On the third day of the revolt, through the flying bullets, the ZOB had attached a blue and white flag
to a chimney, which were the colors of the ZOB s movement flag as well as the Jewish prayer shawl.
The Nazis had tried to shoot and take down the flag, but failed (Rappopart). The flag was the ultimate
symbol of defiance against the Nazis. It was not the Nazis who controlled the city, but the Jews. The
ZOB was able to demoralize the Nazi s conviction of being the superior race and that eliminating the
Jews was going to be easy. The Nazis were unable to fight the fighters directly because of the ZOB s
well organized guerilla warfare tactics which enabled them to escape the Nazis attacks. Frustrated, the
Nazis resorted to burning the whole ghetto to the ground after a month of unsuccessful attempts. Even
though many of the bunks and other fortified locations were burned, the ZOB did not give up. Instead,
on April 29, forty fighters crept through the sewage system in attempt to reach the outside of the
ghetto where partisan groups were attacking the Nazis. When the escape route was discovered, dams
were built to raise water levels sewage systems. To retaliate, the ZOB blew up the dams (Rappoport).
Each attack from the Nazis was retaliated by the ZOB, making it harder for the Nazis to win. The
ZOB became the light of hope, inspiration, and resistance in Warsaw. For the first time, the Nazis were
seen as fallible and defeatable. The Polish Home Army

Oya Song Analysis
Oya is the second track on Ibeyi s self titled debut album, preceded by a prayer to Eleggua, orisha of
the crossroads and the first to be saluted in all Santería ceremonies. The song s title is a reference to an
orisha of the same name, who is believed to be the guardian of the dead and the harbinger of righteous
change and destruction. Both sisters claim personal patronage from Oya, and in Ibeyi fashion, the
track sounds more like a ceremonial evocation than a radio friendly pop song. The arrangement is
sparse, consisting mostly of a looped acapella melody (Figure 1). To my ears, the melody has a
Gregorian air about it, imbuing the recording with a Westernized air of mystery and spiritual
reverence. The melody is occasionally accompanied by a deep, electronic bass, which sounds like an
animalistic growl one moment and a cheetah like roar in others. Figure 1: Oya s underlying melody
(Musescore) Much like the music, Oya s lyrics are also very minimal. The verses showcase Lisa
Kaindé s voice, as she sings, Even if I feel the sun on my skin everyday / If I don t feel you / Even if I
see the most beautiful things up in the sky / If I don t see you. Out the surface, such lyrics would invite
accusations of pointless esotericism; however, when considering Oya s dark and unpredictable nature,
one can imagine Lisa Kaindé (who wrote the song after a breakup) penned the words as a reminder to
herself that no matter how idyllic things may be at the moment, sudden, and oftentimes

Human logic lies within the confines of two principles: faith or morality. As Christians we modify our
daily lives to align with our Faith. We trust and follow the decrees that are outlined and provided in
the word of God. We are governed by laws such as love your neighbor as yourself, love your enemy,
do good and abstain from evil. I contend that those who live by the principle of morality also practice
these basic laws except they do so without cause. Christians reason that we live in such a way to
model ourselves after our Savior, Jesus Christ. Whether we live by faith or morality the blueprint of

With these trends can we dare to say that history can repeat itself, despite knowledge of the past? I
argue yes! We are all ordinary people. If we are deceivingly persuaded to join a community of people

YTM AND HPR
Yield to maturity (YTM) reflects the return required and set by the market on the assumption that the
bond is held to maturity. In equilibrium, it is also the return that investors can expect to earn over the
life of the bond. Holding Period Return (HPR) is the expected return over a future period, and is not
based on the assumption that the bond is held to maturity. SIMILARITIES    Both expressed as
annualised returns (not effective rates) Use the settlement price as cost base Total returns accounting
for both the coupon interest component and the capital gain/loss component
DIFFERENCES    YTM is observed and set by the market, HRP is not YTM assumes that
coupon interests are all invested at the same rate as quoted YTM, HPR allows for different
reinvestment interest rates received at different times YTM assumes that bond is held to maturity,
HPR assumes that bond is to be sold before maturity
CALCULATING HPR HRP is used for comparing the expected return among alternate investments
over the same predetermined holding period. However, to accomplish this task, future interest rates for
different lengths are required.

The Consequences Of The Discovery Of Pi3k Inhibitors
Since early 1990 the discovery of PI3K inhibitors are under way. There is evidence that the early
compounds namely quercetin, wortmannin and LY294002 could inhibit PI3K pathway. The latter two
compounds were able to rule the research for more than a decade but their high toxicity and
insolubility precludedthem as in vivo pharmacological drugs [Falasca (2010]. Thus, the attention was
again shifted to the discovery of novel inhibitors that could target distinct member in PI3K signalling
pathway. Very few PI3K targeting agents, like everolimus and temsirolimus (mTORC inhibitors), have
been approved and their application in cancer treatment is limited [Polivka and Janku (2014)].

The compounds SA16 and IB35 were initially designed to target PDK1 and, serendipitously, found to

Aurora A, which are activated in several cancers. With the aim of developing efficacious and less toxic
PI3K/mTORC inhibitors, the compounds we tested on a panel of pancreatic cancer cell lines in dose

impair cell growth and migration and that they are not toxic at micromolar range to normal human

migration in AsPC 1 and BxPC3 cells. This could be explained by the different inhibitory profile
possessed by SA16 that, as suggested by their in vitro IC50, inhibits with higher potency Aurora A
compared to PDK1 whereas IB35 inhibits PDK1 preferentially. This is confirmed by the fact that IB35
activity was more prominent on AKT308 than SA16 and, conversely, SA16 showed a more prominent
activity towards inhibition of Aurora A T288 phosphorylation (Figure 6). However, both novel

Analysis Of 24-Hour Psycho
Clearly heavily influenced by Douglas Gordon s 24 Hour Psycho, Don DeLillo decidedly creates a
somewhat parallel universe in which Jim Finley, the protagonist of Point Omega partakes in
voyeuristic acts and shares many odd similarities with 24 Hour Psycho s Norman Bates that illustrate
Finley as a clone of Bates, allowing the reader (and watcher) to understand both personas from a more
understanding perspective. The novella Point Omega immediately alludes to 24 Hour Psycho as the
epilogue presents a scene in which an anonymous voice we later confirm as Finley, explains his
ongoing thoughts and experience with the film playing in the background. We are able to observe
DeLillo s interest in 24 Hour Psycho which translates then into his character Finley, who displays his
captivation with the film through his own film. Finley is an aspiring filmmaker who seeks out Richard
Elster, a retired strategist during the Iraq War to star in his upcoming film project. During his time
spent learning about Elster s past, he stays with Elster in an under furnished house in the middle of the
desert, one with a scarcity of clocks or other time telling machines so that his time spent there is
literally immeasurable. And even within his own film, Finley allocates a lot of freedom for the
duration of his film. Once Elster begins sharing his experiences regarding the war and life as a whole,
Finley then turns his concern, or lack thereof, to the film s running time because to him, it could be

Metabolic Alkalosis Lab Report
Metabolic alkalosis is a primary increase in serum bicarbonate (HCO3 ) concentration. This occurs as
a consequence of a loss of H+ from the body or a gain in HCO3 . In its pure form, it manifests as
alkalemia (pH 7.40). As a compensatory mechanism, metabolic alkalosis leads to alveolar
hypoventilation with a rise in arterial carbon dioxide tension (PaCO2), which diminishes the change in

Normally, arterial PaCO2 increases by 0.5 0.7 mm Hg for every 1 mEq/L increase in plasma
bicarbonate concentration, a compensatory response that is very quick. If the change in PaCO2 is not
within this range, then a mixed acid base disturbance occurs. For example, if the increase in PaCO2 is
more than 0.7 times the increase in bicarbonate, then metabolic alkalosis coexists with primary
respiratory acidosis. Likewise, if the increase in PaCO2 is less than the expected change, then a
primary respiratory alkalosis is also present. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Remember that an elevated serum bicarbonate concentration may also be observed as a compensatory
response to primary respiratory acidosis. However, a bicarbonate concentration greater than 35 mEq/L
is almost always caused by metabolic alkalosis.
Metabolic alkalosis is diagnosed by measuring serum electrolytes and arterial blood gases. If the
etiology of metabolic alkalosis is not clear from the clinical history and physical examination,
including drug use and the presence of hypertension, then a urine chloride ion concentration can be
obtained. Calculation of the serum anion gap may also help to differentiate between primary metabolic
alkalosis and metabolic compensation for respiratory acidosis. (See

  • 2. cultural experience Mercedes Lechlitner S102 Katy Kelly April 1, 2014 Cultural Experience Describe In preparation for this reflection, I began by thinking about what cultural event I would most like to attend, what would work for the assignment and what would also benefit me in my personal life by actually forcing me out of my comfort zone to experience things I never have before. Because Christianity is such a huge part of my life I immediately thought I would want to do something based on another religion since I ve never really gone out of my religious comfort zone, but for this assignment I chose to go to a gay bar. The reason I chose to do this was because I have been raised as a Christian, I grew up in a very conservative town and while I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I think it would have a been a very different experience if we had gone when we were 21 and could drink at the bar, I think it would have changed the experience a little bit. We arrived at the bar at a little bit after 10 which is when the dance floor opened and stayed until around 1 in the morning. Examine The part of this experience that was the most compelling to me was almost the sense of community that I felt was just there between the gay community. Like there were a lot of groups of people there that night that didn t even know each other, but you would never guess that by the way they acted like they had been friends for years. Even towards me and my roommate who they didn t know, was just some straight stranger walking in and observing them they were so nice and accepting. They were willing to let us into their environment, knowing that we were not a part of it and I felt no judgment or anything. My fears that I had felt earlier in the day before going were put to rest, while some people were unusually friendly to me no girls really tried to hit on me, which was really relieving. As mentioned above, the most shocking thing I noticed was the community, or the way they socialized with and accepted themselves and each other. I think ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Oliver paid bills, brought groceries, cooked food, went to school and kept a perfect attendance. • 4. Pros And Cons Of Stereotyping The topic pertaining to stereotypes and their kinship with human impulse has been an issue, as well as a solution to society for a long time. A stereotype can be defined as a regular cognitive process, usually automatic, that saves time and effort on making decisions about an individual or group (Devine Monteith, 1999; Operario Fiske, 2001). Stereotyping gives insight about human decision making abilities, as well as impulsive thoughts and ideas about groups and people. In society they are seen as a problem, but the question is can we ever truly eliminate them? The solution to such a question comes from researching to see if stereotypes are hardwired into our brain as a first response or something that we have control over. Therefore, can the primary impulse, which is stereotypical, be overcome, or is it out of our control? Stereotyping is acquired throughout an individual s life by learning from society. This concept is shown by the experiment of Bargh et al. (1996). Bargh created three groups, and had each of them individually complete word puzzles. The first groups work puzzles had words that evoked rude feelings, such as bother and disturb. The second group had a word puzzle with politeness such as courtesy and behaved. The third group had neutral words in their puzzle. When they were finished the puzzle, they were instructed to find the researcher. However, the researcher was intentionally in a conversation, which he stayed in for ten minutes. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Black Colleges And Universities ( Hbcus ) Essay Introduction Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are institutions of higher education in the United States that were established before 1964. As amended by The Higher Education Act of 1965, a part B institution refers to any Historically Black college or university that was established prior to 1964, whose principal mission was, and is, the education of Black Americans, and that is accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency or association determined by the Secretary to be a reliable authority as to the quality of training offered or is, according to such an agency or association, making reasonable progress toward accreditation. Though in 1837 Cheyne University of Pennsylvania and 1854 Lincoln University (Pennsylvania) had been established for Black education, Black Colleges and Universities became recognized by the United States Government in the 1890 s. The second Morrill Land Grant Act specified that states using federal higher education funds must provide an education to Black students, either by opening the doors of their public universities to those of African descent, or by establishing schools specifically to serve them. Integration for white public and private institutions was completely out of the question due to the substantial racial divide within the United States so, many Southern states created a completely separate set of institutions serving Blacks. Thus were born many public and private Black colleges. Of the 100+ HBCU s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. William Wordsworth s Analysis Of I Wandered Lonely As A Cloud The poem was written in the year 1802. It was first published in Poems in Two Volumes, in 1807. The very starting line of the poem I wandered lonely as a cloud informs the poet s profound sentiments of being left alone. It was actually the death of his brother John that led him to loneliness . We should remind the readers that this poem was not a result of imagination. Dorothy, Wordsworth s sister provides us an explanation of the occasion which inspired Wordsworth to produce this masterpiece: When we were in the woods beyond Gowbarrow Park, we saw a few daffodils close to waterside. Thus the poem is a result of actual visualization rather than imagery . In English literature, Wordsworth and his friend, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Introduction Artificial intelligence is the future of mankind; whoever becomes the leader in this sphere will become the ruler of the world. Many think of a paranoid doomsday theorist pressing the issue of how he or she believes one day artificial intelligence may destroy humanity while reading the above quote. I didn t have a favorite outfit or shoes that I wanted to wear to just about any occasion. Although I did have a favorite food, mac and cheese, when it came to things like that it was just whatever I liked, I wanted. One day my mom and I were going shopping with my aunt. It was sunny outside so I wore some faded jean shorts, a striped pink and black tank top, and my black and pink Heely s. My mom had on a pair of jeans, a black T shirt, and some black Michael Kors flip flops. It was a 25 minute drive from my house to Sawgrass Mills Mall so I fell asleep on the ride there. My aunt met us at the front of the mall. As we walked in, you could feel the temperature change. There were people walking everywhere. I could even see some people sitting and getting massages because they ve probably been walking around all day. You could hear some people on the phone, some just having friendly conversations with people they probably didn t even know, and even a baby crying. We had been in the mall for about an hour and wasn t even halfway through the building. Went in a few clothing and shoe stores and left with at least three bags. At Columbus State University, there are multiple people that should be considered for an honor. Mary Blackmon started women s athletics at CSU. Frank Brown , former president at CSU, transformed CSU from a commuter college into the massive university it is today. Thomas Whitley was the founding president at CSU. Carson McCullers was a well known author in Columbus. All these people did something great for CSU. However, I believe John Townsend, the first African American student at CSU, is the one who deserves a statue . The Civil Rights movement was an incredible time in our history to see a drastic change in society. The movement pushed laws to end racial segregation and discrimination , causing schools to be integrated. Because of that movement, it allowed John Townsend to be the first African American to enter what is now called Columbus State University. Being an African American myself, if it wasn t for him being the first African American at Columbus State University, I wouldn t be able to attend here today. In my criteria of legacy and impact, John Townsend scored highest in both categories. An impact is when a new idea comes and influence people from all around. • 12. The Atomic Bombings Of Hiroshima And Nagasaki It has been seventy years since the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the end of the Second World War in the Pacific Theatre. However, the unconditional surrender that was favored by the Allies was only accepted by Japan after the Soviet Union entry into the Greater East Asia War and the nuclear devastation of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It is a common myth in the Western world that the nuclear bombs Little Boy and Fat Man caused Japan to surrender and in turn saved the lives of thousands of American soldiers that were about to embark upon Operation Downfall, the invasion of Japan. However, decades after the war the idea that the nuclear bombing of Japan was a military necessity is not taken at face value as it once was. Any historian who would explore the situation in the Pacific theater will find that most of the actions taken by the warring nations during the end were in reality very political in nature. This means that the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki have a political necessity instead of a military one. This political necessity was which nation would win the surrender of the Japanese Empire. The United States of America and the Soviet Union were racing each other for the surrender of Japan for different reasons. The situation between Latvia, Germany, and Russia during World War II was complex and that complexity left many Latvians vulnerable to Stalinist repression when the Soviet government first ordered deportations in 1941 and when deportations began again when Soviet occupation of Latvia returned in the October of 1944. With the signing of the German Soviet Non aggression Pact in 1939, the Soviet Union gained a sphere of influence over west Poland and the Baltic States. On June 16th, 1940, the Latvian government received an ultimatum from the Soviet government. The Soviet government instructed them to form a new government that would comply with the implementation a Soviet Latvian mutual assistance pact and to allow the Red Army unrestricted entry and movement throughout Latvia or have it done so by force. The following day, June 17th, the Red Army entered Riga, the capital and the Latvian government was dissolved. Overcoming Adversity In A Trip For Mrs. Taylor Everyone has experienced adversity at one point in their life, whether it be a final exam or staying strong while you re going through a rough time. As for many, they assume that running from their problems is the easy way out when in fact running from your problems may seem easy at the time, but is a race that can never be won. Instead, we need to face our problems straight on, because the feeling of conquering a challenge gives us an unexplainable feeling of success. Through the character Mrs. Taylor, Author Hugh Garner depicts how facing hardships head on, leads to the feeling of accomplishment in his story, A Trip For Mrs. Taylor . Based on the story and a personal example it s evident that when an individual faces adversity, they strive to overcome challenges which leads to the rush of success. In the short story, A Trip for Mrs. Taylor, author Hugh Garner uses Mrs. Taylor to demonstrate when Mrs. taylor is lonely, how going on a trip helps her to overcome adversity through the smallest interactions with others which brings upon Mrs. Taylor the feeling of success. From the start, a reader can infer that Mrs. Taylor feels lonely and goes on a trip to fill the void of solitude. On the way to the cathedral like station concourse, a young soldier sympathetically helps Mrs. Taylor with her bags. Differentiating Between Market Structures Of Wal Mart Differentiating between market structures The structure of a market is defined by the number of firms in the market, the existence or otherwise of barriers to entry of new firms, and the interdependence among firms in determining pricing and output to maximize profits. Retail sales are indicators of microeconomic conditions presented in a given area at a particular place in time. Since Sam Walton opened his first Wal Mart store, Wal Mart has been making ripples throughout the micro economies of America. Sticky prices are the result of an informal collusion behavior and correlates to a kinked demand curve as one reason firms do not lower their prices to outsell their competition. Any increase or decrease in price will be met by their competition, causing the less elastic portion of the demand curve and its corresponding marginal revenue curve to cause a kink in the demand curve. This kink causes the marginal revenue curve to have a gap and is resultant from the theory of sticky prices (Colander, 2010). Wal Mart would be considered a monopolistic structure in the retail market. Wal Mart is very aggressive in beating out the smaller competition and in advertising efforts. With Wal Mart offering such low prices it makes it hard for other retailers to compete and hinders sales drastically for smaller companies. Wal Mart was quoted to be a monopolistic beast and strong opinions about the organization are everywhere (Bloomberg, 2013). There are different classifications of markets and the structure of a business determines which classification it will fall into. Markets are divided according to the composition of the business and what it provides to the specific market. Business composition is determined by the structure of market characteristics, and this helps determine level and area of competition. Analysis Of Gulliver s Travels By Jonathan Swift Aldous Huxley once said, There are things known and there are things unknown, and in between are the doors of perception (The Personal Path to Virtue 20). Perception is present in every aspect of society, for humans decipher receptive actions into comprehensible and consolidated views of the Earth around them. From art, to music, and even to literature, everyone has his or her own perception, one that can change and develop dependent upon everyone s own vision. In the novel, Gulliver s Travels by Jonathan Swift, the reader will find their perception of the themes and the characters in the book drastically different in the beginning of the story than at the end. When one first lays their hands on a copy of Gulliver s Travels, the ideas and themes they would believe to be most obvious and important would include adventure, discovery and the development of civilization. They would simply formulate these ideas from the title and cover of the novel. However, as one reads the story and divulges into the deeper meaning of Gulliver and his travels, he or she will find that the limits of human understanding and the individual comparisons of nature versus society are much more present in the novel than are adventure and discovery. Sometimes, doing nothing is a smart thing to do, providing the decision to do nothing is well thought out and based on an analysis of the situation. Although avoidance might appear to be a cop out, it can sometimes be the most appropriate response. A common means of avoiding conflict is to be secretive. This can be done by employees and managers. The notion is that if no one knows what is being done, there can be little conflict. By being secretive, one may delay conflict and confrontation, but when it does surface it will have far more negative emotions attached to it than would have been the case if things were more open. It may be wise to avoid a conflict if the issue is minor or if the potential conflict partner is a formidable opponent. Not every conflict justifies your attention. One should not routinely withdraw from conflicts because it provides only a temporary fix and sidesteps the underlying problem. An accommodating manager is also known as a smoothing or obliging manager (Hemmer, 2003). Accommodating is allowing the desires of the other party to prevail. This resolution reflects low assertiveness and high cooperativeness. Summary Of The Middle English Breton Lay Sir Freine The following close reading concerns itself with the Middle English Breton Lay Sir Degaré, though speculative, the poem s composition has been dated to the 14th Century and the poem survives in six manuscripts and three early printed editions, it is a romance of high antiquity, preserved in the Auchinleck MS. Some suggest that the poem takes clear inspiration from the Middle English translation of Marie de France s Le Fresne: Lay le Freine. Moreover, some propose that Sir Degaré is more accurately described as an emulation, believing it to be more an imitation made up from a variety of stories, as it borrows not only motifs but direct phrasing from Lay Le Freine. Not only do both texts share a similar rhyming scheme, rhyming couplets, and semi alliterative lines, they are also similar in relation to common genre conventions. In this respect, the Breton Lay has been understood by many to be the predecessor to the modern fairy tale, and indeed, Sir Degaré is enveloped in themes such as love, the supernatural, and critically, the correlation between the two constructs of gender, which themselves are manifested in the modern day fairy tale. The opposition is apparent between the two constructs of gender, man was glad a blithe , (joyful) (155) whereas the princess siked an sorewed swithe. (sickened and sorrowed) (156) This disparity underlines the attitudes that permeate this text, considering the atrocity that has occurred, it is sickening to comprehend. Alluringly, ... • 29. Value Of Shame In Nathaniel Hawthorne s The Scarlet Letter Carissa Larriuz Mrs. Gordon English 11 29 April 2018 The Value of Shame In modern culture, it is often used as a great threat and punishment to be publicly shamed, multiple judges of the court even sentence this as a punishment. When the term is used loosely, it appears an inappropriate alternative to jail time, yet when speculated closely, public shame is in some ways worse than being put away in a cell. This can be argued due to the behavior spectators display with involvement in the situation firsthand. I believe that although in some cases public shame could be excessive and not fit the crime correctly, that public shaming is an effective and influential form of punishment for certain crimes. Primitively, According to the 8th ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This concept has existed almost as long as humans themselves, right from the beginning of creation in the story of The Garden of Eden. Adam and Eve were tempted into committing the first crime known to man and once committed they were punished publicly by being unclothed. This nakedness and sense of vulnerability was a form of public shame because their entity was exposed and they were provided this punishment as a reflection of self assessment. This similar idea is conveyed in Nathaniel Hawthorne s novel The Scarlet Letter. In the most basic sense, Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale and Hester Prynne represent the primary characters in the biblical story of the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve. The first scaffold scene, where Hester stands alone with her baby in her arms, in terms of similarities between the story and the biblical one of Adam and Eve, plays on the biblical fact that Eve is said to have eaten the fruit first and then convinced Adam to eat it afterward. The community s belief that women are, by nature, sinful, is backed up by the interpretation of the biblical story and therefore shown in their acts of ridicule to Hester alone. Overall, the use of public humiliation as a way of instilling social discipline in in many ways highly effective when used suitably. It may lack effectiveness if the offender in question ... • 30. The Causes Of Learning Disabilities In the early 1960 s Samuel Kirk founded the term learning disabilities. This came about after he had visited with a group of parents to discuss why their children seem to have small amounts of success even when they can understand and comprehend things just like other children. As a result of this meeting the Learning Disabilities Association of America was formed (Pullen, 27). Learning Disabilities (LD) are created when there is a space between a person s ability to think and reason and not understanding based on the results from tests. There are a few reasons why LD can occur. Boys are more prone than girls, African Americans and Latinos are more prone than Whites and Asians. Most adolescents with LD struggle with reading. They also have difficulties interacting with others, expressing their feelings and understanding the feelings of other. Last, the amount of teacher s involvement with adolescents can reduce the dropout rate (Arnett; Pullen). First, it is important to know the gender, genetics and behavior that contribute to LD. For every 1 female there are 3 males that have LD. Even though the reason for this is not clear, there are 2 things that can contribute to this outcome. First, is the higher rate of genetics if an adolescent has a monozygotic twin, parent or parents with LD. In this case, the likelihood of the other twin or future children having LD is pretty high. As a result, this is due to the brain functioning and processing in different ways than people ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Slaves were set free and did not have the slightest idea on how to survive on their own. Blacks were never legitimately free, with lack of resources and racist laws, the slaves had no choice but to return to their masters. Blacks were set free, but their freedom was extremely limited due to the strictness of racist laws. The laws were keeping blacks from bettering themselves to be able to survive on their own without having to depend on whites. The laws were completely controlling freedmen s liberty and lives. Curfews were set in order to keep slaves from getting together and forming groups. The racists whites wanted to keep blacks from being able to protest or march for blacks rights. The Louisiana Black Codes stated that no freed man who was not in the military could not have any firearms or weapons of any kind. Without guns blacks would not be able to protect themselves. The emergency medical services are proven to be slower in small rural areas than in a bigger city, because most of the small town rural areas emergency response services are volunteer. While judging the amount of coverage an emergency response station covers, government officials look at the amount of people in a given area, not the mileage that area may cover. My hometown is mostly farmland, with a population of seven hundred and fifty people, the farmland covers twenty five to thirty miles in each direction. This may not sound like much land to cover, but when it comes to saving lives, time is of the essence. When coming up with what land the emergency services in the area covers, government officials calculate the land in a area and how much taxes the land have in a given year and whether or not they can afford emergency medical services. If a small town can not afford the cost of a full time medical service, the government then puts the small town in the hands of the neighboring community that can afford the emergency medical services. Sometimes the neighboring emergency medical services will establish a volunteer EMT station in the small town to try and get as many emergency calls answered as quickly as possible. The Nazis tried to suppress, demoralize, and dehumanize the Jews in every way possible. As the news of Jews being sent to death camps became known, the Jews began to rise up against the Nazis. They refused to let an invading army destroy their homes, friends, and family. It was not the Nazis who controlled the city, but the Jews. The ZOB was able to demoralize the Nazi s conviction of being the superior race and that eliminating the Jews was going to be easy. The Nazis were unable to fight the fighters directly because of the ZOB s well organized guerilla warfare tactics which enabled them to escape the Nazis attacks. Frustrated, the Nazis resorted to burning the whole ghetto to the ground after a month of unsuccessful attempts. Even though many of the bunks and other fortified locations were burned, the ZOB did not give up. Instead, on April 29, forty fighters crept through the sewage system in attempt to reach the outside of the ghetto where partisan groups were attacking the Nazis. When the escape route was discovered, dams were built to raise water levels sewage systems. To retaliate, the ZOB blew up the dams (Rappoport). • 34. Oya Song Analysis Oya is the second track on Ibeyi s self titled debut album, preceded by a prayer to Eleggua, orisha of the crossroads and the first to be saluted in all Santería ceremonies. The song s title is a reference to an orisha of the same name, who is believed to be the guardian of the dead and the harbinger of righteous change and destruction. Both sisters claim personal patronage from Oya, and in Ibeyi fashion, the track sounds more like a ceremonial evocation than a radio friendly pop song. The arrangement is sparse, consisting mostly of a looped acapella melody (Figure 1). To my ears, the melody has a Gregorian air about it, imbuing the recording with a Westernized air of mystery and spiritual reverence. The melody is occasionally accompanied by a deep, electronic bass, which sounds like an animalistic growl one moment and a cheetah like roar in others. Figure 1: Oya s underlying melody (Musescore) Much like the music, Oya s lyrics are also very minimal. The verses showcase Lisa Kaindé s voice, as she sings, Even if I feel the sun on my skin everyday / If I don t feel you / Even if I see the most beautiful things up in the sky / If I don t see you. Out the surface, such lyrics would invite accusations of pointless esotericism; however, when considering Oya s dark and unpredictable nature, one can imagine Lisa Kaindé (who wrote the song after a breakup) penned the words as a reminder to herself that no matter how idyllic things may be at the moment, sudden, and oftentimes ... We trust and follow the decrees that are outlined and provided in the word of God. We are governed by laws such as love your neighbor as yourself, love your enemy, do good and abstain from evil. I contend that those who live by the principle of morality also practice these basic laws except they do so without cause. There is evidence that the early compounds namely quercetin, wortmannin and LY294002 could inhibit PI3K pathway. The latter two compounds were able to rule the research for more than a decade but their high toxicity and insolubility precludedthem as in vivo pharmacological drugs [Falasca (2010]. Thus, the attention was again shifted to the discovery of novel inhibitors that could target distinct member in PI3K signalling pathway. SA16 and IB35 are novel dual inhibitors that could block both PDK1 and Aurora A, which are activated in several cancers. With the aim of developing efficacious and less toxic PI3K/mTORC inhibitors, the compounds we tested on a panel of pancreatic cancer cell lines in dose dependent way demonstrated that both dual PDK1/Aurora A inhibitors SA16 and IB35 are able to impair cell growth and migration and that they are not toxic at micromolar range to normal human pancreatic cells human embryonic kidney cells. The two compounds show a very similar activity but present some different results, such as the activity on cell proliferation in BxPC3 cells and on cell migration in AsPC 1 and BxPC3 cells. This could be explained by the different inhibitory profile possessed by SA16 that, as suggested by their in vitro IC50, inhibits with higher potency Aurora A compared to PDK1 whereas IB35 inhibits PDK1 preferentially. This is confirmed by the fact that IB35 activity was more prominent on AKT308 than SA16 and, conversely, SA16 showed a more prominent activity towards inhibition of Aurora A T288 phosphorylation (Figure 6). • 41. Analysis Of 24-Hour Psycho Clearly heavily influenced by Douglas Gordon s 24 Hour Psycho, Don DeLillo decidedly creates a somewhat parallel universe in which Jim Finley, the protagonist of Point Omega partakes in voyeuristic acts and shares many odd similarities with 24 Hour Psycho s Norman Bates that illustrate Finley as a clone of Bates, allowing the reader (and watcher) to understand both personas from a more understanding perspective. The novella Point Omega immediately alludes to 24 Hour Psycho as the epilogue presents a scene in which an anonymous voice we later confirm as Finley, explains his ongoing thoughts and experience with the film playing in the background. We are able to observe DeLillo s interest in 24 Hour Psycho which translates then into his character Finley, who displays his captivation with the film through his own film. Finley is an aspiring filmmaker who seeks out Richard Elster, a retired strategist during the Iraq War to star in his upcoming film project. During his time spent learning about Elster s past, he stays with Elster in an under furnished house in the middle of the desert, one with a scarcity of clocks or other time telling machines so that his time spent there is literally immeasurable. And even within his own film, Finley allocates a lot of freedom for the duration of his film. • 44. Metabolic Alkalosis Lab Report Metabolic alkalosis is a primary increase in serum bicarbonate (HCO3 ) concentration. This occurs as a consequence of a loss of H+ from the body or a gain in HCO3 . In its pure form, it manifests as alkalemia (pH 7.40). As a compensatory mechanism, metabolic alkalosis leads to alveolar hypoventilation with a rise in arterial carbon dioxide tension (PaCO2), which diminishes the change in pH that would otherwise occur. Normally, arterial PaCO2 increases by 0.5 0.7 mm Hg for every 1 mEq/L increase in plasma bicarbonate concentration, a compensatory response that is very quick. If the change in PaCO2 is not within this range, then a mixed acid base disturbance occurs. For example, if the increase in PaCO2 is more than 0.7 times the increase in bicarbonate, then metabolic alkalosis coexists with primary respiratory acidosis. Likewise, if the increase in PaCO2 is less than the expected change, then a primary respiratory alkalosis is also present. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If the etiology of metabolic alkalosis is not clear from the clinical history and physical examination, including drug use and the presence of hypertension, then a urine chloride ion concentration can be obtained. Calculation of the serum anion gap may also help to differentiate between primary metabolic alkalosis and metabolic compensation for respiratory acidosis. (See ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
