Jefferson wanted to limit federal power and advocate for states' rights and majority rule through a hands-off policy of laissez-faire. As president, he sought to cut taxes, simplify the government, and reduce spending, especially in the military. This led the government's revenue to come only from tariffs and land sales. Jefferson also chose not to renew the Alien and Sedition Acts. Additionally, Jefferson and the Republican party tried to impeach many Federalist judges that Adams had appointed, but failed to remove many of them. In the case of Marbury v. Madison, the Supreme Court established the power of judicial review to declare laws unconstitutional, increasing its power over the other branches.
