King Philip of Macedonia conquered Greece but was then assassinated. His son Alexander took the throne at age 20 and sought to conquer Persia, defeating them in numerous battles. Alexander pushed eastward until his troops grew tired and refused to continue. Though his empire broke apart after his death, Alexander spread Greek culture and encouraged blending with local customs. His conquests helped usher in the Hellenistic period marked by advances in science, philosophy, and culture.
