A session on CGPA
By

What is CGPA ?
Central Board of Secondary (CBSE) has
introduced Grading at Secondary School
level for Classes IX and X from the
academic year 2009-10. vide Circular No
40/29-09-2009.
Accordingly, the “Statement of
Subject wise Performance” issued by
the Board for Class X
examination shall have only grades.
In this system, students’ performance has
been assessed using
conventional numerical marking mode,
and the same has been be converted into
the grades on the basis of the pre-
determined marks ranges.
The schools affiliated to the Board have
to introduce the this Grading Scheme in
the evaluation of their students in class
IX under the scheme of
Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation
(CCE)
Operational Modalities followed for
implementation of grading scheme are :
1. A student’s performance has been assessed
using conventional method of numerical marking.
2 .The ‘Grades’ have been awarded to indicate the
subject wise performance.
3. Subject wise Grades and Grade Point (GP) have
been shown in the “Statement of Subject wise
Performance” to be issued to all candidates.
The candidates have also been
provided CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average)
excluding additional 6th subject as per Scheme of
Studies in the “Statement of Subject wise
Performance”
CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point
Average.
It is an overall indicative percentage of
marks.
How to calculate percentage from CGPA ?
Multiply the CGPA with 9.5.
Why multiply with 9.5 only ?
Multiply the CGPA with 9.5. Why multiply with 9.5
only ?
The Board took the result of the last five
years and calculated the average marks of all
candidates who had scored between 91 and
100. That average turned out to be close to 95
marks.
Since the equivalent Grade Point for the 91-100
band (A1 grade) of marks is 10, it then divided
the average result of 95 by 10. The result is 9.5.
The grade & Grade Point:
1. A1 –> for 91 to 100 marks ( grade point is 10)
2. A2 –> for 81 to 90 marks ( grade point is 9)
3. B1 –> for 71 to 80 marks ( grade point is 8 )
4. B2 –> for 61 to 70 marks ( grade point is 7)
5. C1 –> for 51 to 60 marks ( grade point is 6)
6. C2 –> for 41 to 50 marks ( grade point is 5)
7. D –> for 33 to 40 marks ( grade point is 4)
8. E1 –> for 21 to 32 marks ( no grade point)
9. E2 –> for 00 to 20 marks ( no grade point)
Individual grades and grade points will be given
for each subject. Students will also get overall
grade point for five subjects.
This overall grade point is
called CGPA(cumulative grade point average)
and it can be used to calculate estimated overall
percentage of marks obtained by the student.
Calculation of Percentage for one subject :
Grade Point X 9.5
Example : suppose a student get B1 in Hindi and
his grade point is 8. Now his
estimated percentage in Hindi will be 8 X 9.5 =
76 percent.
Calculation of overall percentage : CGPA X
9.5
Example : suppose CGPA (printed on grade
sheet) is 7.8.
Now his/her estimated overall percentage will
be 7.8 X 9.5 = 74.1 percent.
GP (Grade
Points)
Calculation
Estimated
Percentage
10 10 X 9.5 95 %
09 9 X 9.5 85.5%
08 8 X 9.5 76%
07 7 X 9.5 66.5%
06 6 X 9.5 57%
05 5 X 9.5 47.5%
04 4 X 9.5 38%
Calculation of GP to subject wise percentage:
