The cell cycle is a series of events that allows a cell to divide into two daughter cells, involving phases such as interphase and mitotic phase in eukaryotic cells, and distinct periods in prokaryotic cells. Interphase includes the G1, S, and G2 phases where the cell grows and replicates its DNA before mitosis, which is followed by cytokinesis to form two genetically identical cells. Additionally, some cells may enter a quiescent G0 phase where they temporarily or permanently cease to divide.
