A Comparison of Three Newspapers Articles on the Same Topic
A Comparison of Three Newspapers Articles on the Same Topic
In my essay, I shall compare the way in which three news publications, The Mirror, an example of the
popular press, The Times, an example of the quality press and Newsweek, an American publication
reported the same incident. Using these three reports, I shall compare the variations and similarities in
the amount of factual information given, the interviews used, the language employed and finally, the
layout and presentation of the various articles.
On the 3rd of February 1998, a U.S. military jet sliced the wire of a cable car in the Italian ski resort in
the Dolomites in Cavalese. This resulted in the untimely death of 20 tourists ... Show more content on

The tone is much more factual and is not as colloquial as popular press. The sentences are usually
quite complex; hence the paragraphs are quite lengthy. The graphics are usually informative rather
than biased or seeking attention. Moreover, in The Times, the sound effects would usually be limited
to puns. Foreign publications, such as Newsweek, generally contain features of both popular press and
quality press.
The Mirror contained quite a lot of factual information. The article informed the readership that 20
skiers plunged 300ft to their deaths after a low flying American warplane sliced through the wire of
their cable car. Similarly, The Times and Newsweek also provided this information. The article in The
Times stated Twenty people fell three hundred feet to their death when an American military aircraft
sliced the steel wire supporting a cable car carrying skiers. Like the other two articles, the article in
Newsweek established that a U.S. fighter jet had clipped two cable cars and sent a gondola full of
skiers tumbling to the ground. All three articles also confirmed that there were twenty victims. The
Mirror and Newsweek gave more detail about this aspect. The Mirror stated that the victims were nine
women, 10 men and one child. Newsweek also stated that the tourists originated from seven European
countries.

John Mcphee s Rising From The Plains
As I recently drove on Interstate 80, from Colorado to Iowa, I could not help but think of John
McPhee s book Rising from the plains; and how from a different perspective a boring piece of land in
the plains could reveal a rich history of geological cycles. McPhee is able to bring to life the study of
geology in a way that is relatable by creating relationships between the landscape, people, and history
through the use of transforming the same plot of land across eons of time. He uses several pages to
discuss geology, followed by stories about the love family ranch as an overview of life on the very
same plains four million years ago. This format for reading allows the author to build layers of science
facts with story so that the humanistic element does not get distracted by the complex material. The
reader develops a sense of the formation of the specific terms such as; the system, period, stage and
age names, and thus overcomes the barrier of reading just geology facts. The passage for which all the
specialized knowledge comes from is a man named David Love.
Rather than using his education and experience for the benefit of private industry, David Love serves
as supervisor of the environmental branch of the United States Geological Survey in Laramie, Wyo.
Mr. Love, who was born in the Wind River Basin in central Wyoming in 1913 and who grew up on an
isolated ranch there, joins McPhee on a drive across the vast open stretches of Wyoming s Interstate

Were Lewis And Clark Respectful To The Native Americans...
Were Lewis and Clark respectful to the Native Americans they met on their journey? The expedition
of Lewis and Clark was a landmarking event in American history, but its significance goes beyond just
the land they discovered. The Lewis and Clark Expedition was put forward so the two would be able to
see and map out western America in search of new trade routes and passages. Lewis and Clark would
have doubtfully survived had it not been with the aid of the Indians they met on their travels. Upon
their controversial meetings with several Indian groups, Lewis and Clark were not respectful to the
Americans they met on their journey. The controversial messages behind the peace metals, the

As requested by Jefferson, Lewis and Clark would give medicine to the Indians, as disease was very
common among them. They were able to complete many trades with Indian groups, giving them
things such as guns and receiving food and information along with other resources for their
expedition. Sacagawea was a very helpful guide and interpreter for Lewis and Clark. She was a very
important contributing aid to the success of the expedition. The relationship between Lewis and Clark
and Sacagawea and her family was an example of respect between the two groups. After the help of
Sacagawea, Lewis and Clark even persuaded them to give them Sacagawea s son so they could put
him in United States schooling, and he could grow up healthy. Lewis and Clark did follow through
with this promise. Lewis and Clark were respectful at times to the Indians, but the two as well

Periosteum
Periosteum
Periosteum is a dense layer of connective tissue. It is very thin and is on the outside of the bone. It
plays a vital role in growth and repair. It is divided into two sections, an outer layer and inner layer.
The inner layer contains osteoblasts which helps with the increase of the width and length of other
bone types. [13]
Compact Bone/ Spongy
Compact bones are also called cortical bone. Cortical bone is one of the two different bones found in
the body. It is covered by periosteum and is lined with endosteum. These bones make up eighty
percent of the human skeleton. The remainder is cancellous bone (spongy bone) it has a spongy

Space Race Research Paper
The space race was the event the began the interest in space exploration. It all started in 1957 during
the Cold War, when there was tension between America and the Soviet Union. There was also new
technology from the war. According to Murray (Date unknown) Many people believed the nation that
controlled the skies could win any war. (para. 5). So when the Soviet Union decided to launch the first
artificial satellite, Sputnik, into orbit America was not happy.
In counter to the Soviet Union s launch America decided to launch their own satellite. That satellite is
what pushed President Dwight Eisenhower to created the Aeronautics and Space Administration

The Relationship Between Accounting Responsibility Of Real...
Hence, the negative impacts of earnings management and accusing earnings management as one of the
main reason of last decade financial scandals have forced accounting setters and financial regulators to
provide solutions and initiatives for hindering earnings management. However, most of the attempts
have failed, since earnings managements researchers found that managers still can achieve their
earnings management objectives, through manipulating real activities. So it is more useful to examine
the relationship between accounting responsibility in real earnings management. ???? There are some
reasons for why managers manage earnings. At the basic level, the reasons are related to the
performance of the firm with respect to some benchmark. This benchmark could be the previous
period s performance that shows an improving trend, analyst s expectations or whatever benchmark is
specified in a manager s compensation contract. Missing these benchmarks can be extremely costly
because the relationship between stock price and compensation and earning is very non linear around
the benchmarks. When firms are extremely close to the target, the incentives to take earning just over
the target becoming exceedingly strong. In these cases, the firms will try and use some form of
upwards earnings management to bump up earnings over the target. However, when firms are below
their target, they have an incentive to make things worse for the following two reasons. Firstly, it is

The Social Control Theory Of Criminology
While most theories in criminology focus on the reasons and factors why people commit deviance, the
social control theory focuses on the reasons why people conform to what is excecpted from society.
The social control theory tends to revolve around questions such as why isn t everyone motivated to
commit acts of deviance as well as why individuals conform. The basic premise of the social control
theory is that criminality results when an individual s bond to society is weakened or broken. There
are four social bonds in the social control theory, which are attachment, committment, belief and
involvement. Travis Hirschi agrued that humans are like animals, they can be controlled but can be
governed by conditioned instincts. In other words, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Attachment is the emotional bond, which can be described as the individual s sensitivity to and
interest in others. The reason why attachment is an observable factor is because people consider the
embarrassment of being gulity of the crime or being charged for the crime. They also take into account
how it might impact their relationships with their social groups such as family and friends. Attachment
revolves around how much loyality people have towards social insititutions and care about the opinión
of others. Social groups such as families and friends can impact the way people conform towards not
committing crimes. Furthermore, the conformity to norms, awareness of the conscience, and the
motives of the superego are what determine The more attached people are to social groups, the less
likely they will be deviant. During my three potential theft encounters, my attachment

Raya And Orangutan
Raya, a male orangutan, died in 2013, under the watchful eye of veterinarians, following a cruel
showdown with neighborhood villagers on an Indonesian island named Sumatra. Until then, scientists
believed there were only two types of orangutan, one that dwells on Sumatra, and one on Borneo
Island. They realized that their populations, as with the other primates on Earth chimpanzees, gorillas,
and bonobos are waning. An estimated 60,000 orangutans in total are left. Raya, however, was apart of

gathering may be somewhat different from the other orangutans on the remainder of the island. The

Looking Out for Number One T.H. Breen

An Analysis of Looking Out for Number One:
Conflicting Cultural Values in Early Seventeenth Century Virginia by: T.H. Breen
I believe what Breen is trying to say in his essay is that the Englishmen that came to Virginia were
very different from the settlers of other colonies and they had a much different society develop than
what was typical in the other colonies. They were a highly individualistic society. Breen believes that
the personalities of those who came to Virginia were, in part what caused Virginia s society to become
so individualistic. Being so individualistic didn t exactly work out so well for the structure of society
or the well being of the colonists. Breen says that the first people to ... Show more content on

Virginia had a slave population of 187,600 in 1770 (135). This number is more than double that of any
other colony at the time.
4. I do agree with Breen s point of view and for the most part it agrees with our text. I would probably
be more likely to agree with Breen that the people of Virginia did not form a military band and fight
back against the Indians especially how the text talks about Indians remaining a strong presence. It
wouldn t make much sense for the Indians to remain a strong presence if they are constantly being
attacked by the settlers. I think the reason that the Indians stayed around is because Virginia was not
effectively fighting them off because they didn t have any type of formalized military, or formalized
anything for that matter, not even schools.
5. Slavery in New York City, 1731 ALAW For Regulating Negroes and Slaves in the Night Time I don
t think that this document had too much to do with Breen s essay Looking Out For Number One but
rather it comes slightly later. I do think that the drastic rise in slave labor shows how Virginia was
willing to exploit people in order to turn a profit and how it would be necessary for them to enact laws
regulating the liberties of slaves to keep them from rising up when the population

The Role Of Uk Weaning Guidelines And The Sources Of...
In another mixed method study to explore the knowledge of the UK weaning guidelines and the
sources of weaning advice used by UK first time mothers (Moore et al, 2012), findings were quite
similar to the first study. The use of elements from both quantitative and qualitative research
approaches have been found to contribute positively to the research process (Johnson et al. 2007). This
was the main methodological strength of this study together with its size although there remains the
argument that combining two methods of research can be difficult (Giddings and Grant, 2006). Gildea
et al (2009) support the use of the internet in obtaining information on weaning. The result showed
86% of the respondents had knowledge about the guidelines that related to weaning which resulted in
later weaning. A significant number of the mothers got weaning information from different places, but
health visitor advice had the most influence on the 26% of the mother s decision to wean, while the
internet attributed to 25% and books to 18% of mothers. Nevertheless, 56% still attributed the source
of conflicting advice to come from healthcare professionals. This supports findings by Moore et al
(2012) who found that Health Visitors were inconsistent with the advice they gave on weaning
guidelines and recommendations. This is despite the fact that they are the largest number of health
professionals who give advice to postnatal mothers in the UK. This inconsistency in advice also
contributes to

The Greek God Pan
Greek myths and legends are all about the gods and heroes of the ancient Greek people. They tell us
about how the ancient Greek people looked at the world and how they explained the origins of the
world. There are many different stories on many different gods, heroes, villains but today, one is
gonna learn about the Greek god Pan. Pan has been a symbol of the force of nature for many ages. Pan
has influenced so many supernatural writers. Some of those writers got famous off of the story that
they wrote about Pan. For example the book The great god Pan by Arthur Machen did immensely
well.
Pan was the god of the wild, hunting and he was a companion of the nymphs. Pan was given by the
greeks and his Roman name was Faunus. Pan power s states Like the other gods of olympus, Pan
possessed enormous strength. (Greek gods, https://greekgodsandgoddesses.net) This shows that Pan
was extraordinary strong. He could also run for long periods of time and he could not get injured. He
could transform objects into different forms and was able to teleport himself from Earth to Mount
Olympus and back. He is represented as very clever with a wonderful sense of humor. Pan was often
in the company of the wood nymphs and other deities of the forest.
There are many different assumptions to who people think Pan s parents are. His father may have been
Zeus, Dionysus, Hermes, or Apollo. His mother may have been a nymph called Dryope, Penelope who
later became the wife of Odysseus, or Aphrodite.

Examples Of The First Circle Of Hell In Dante s Inferno
In Dante s Inferno, Dante proposes an intriguing order for his nine circles of hell. Ignoring Limbo,
Dante, intending to list the circles from the least grievous sin to the most grievous sin, orders the
circles starting from lust, going to gluttony, greed, then wrath. Dante provides a thought provoking
experience for the reader causing one to redefine his understanding of sin and God s judgement.
After limbo, Dante presents the first circle of hell as the punishment for the lustful. While many, if
given the choice, would not place lust as the least of all the sins, Dante does for good reason. In
Appendix C, Aquinas expounds on Dante s argument that sins committed in passion are not as grave
as premeditated sin. First, as sin consists chiefly in an act of the will, it follows that, other things being
equal, a sin is all the more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While this punishment does not seem as severe as the other circles, it is symbolic of the greedy s
fruitless pursuit of earthly riches. Dante places this in an even lower circle of hell because in regards
to the sin of miserliness or squandering money, the abusers are even more aware of their sin.
Furthermore, sin s underlying principle is even more visible here. According to Aquinas reasoning of
sin in Dante s Inferno, pride is at the root of all sin. Whereas pride regards sin as turning away from
God, to Whose commandment man refuses to be subject, for which reason it is called the beginning,
because the beginning of evil consists in turning away from God (Aquinas, 385). Aquinas articulates
that pride is the basis for all sin, because pride takes place when we refuse to be subject to the will of
God, and the beginning of all sin is when we first turn away from God. Those who are greedy and
miserly refuse to obey God s command of taking care of the poor and rather horde as much money as
they can to no

After the calculations you end up coming out with a rate of 14.87%. The third and final part of
question three asks what rate you will need if the interest is compounded semiannually. All you have
to do is double the amount of terms and you will come out with a lower number of 7.177%. Since the
interest is compounded semiannually that means that you will need to times that number by two and
you come out with your final number of 14.35%.
In question four, Janet was asked to solve a question that deals with annuity payments, specifically,
ordinary annuities. It starts by asking of how much you will make if you add $2,000 every year and it
is compounded by 10% interest every year. These, for the most part, are future value problems. The
first one comes out to be a future value of $12,210.20, which does not satisfy the need for $20,000.
The next part asks what the value would be if the interest was compounded semiannually. You have to
do an equation in order to find out what the effective annual interest rate. Through this equation you
come out with a value of 10.25% and after the calculator calculations you come out with a future
value of $12,271.11, also not meeting the demand for that first year of college. The next part asks
what payment will you need in order to get to that $20,000 number and the present value comes to be
$3,275.95. Next, the case asks what original payment you would need in order

Alopecia Disease
Abstracts
During my research on alopecia I examined journals, articles and web sources in order to receive a
better understanding of the disease, and the problems afflicted people have. To foster a greater
understanding of the illness I researched general information on the disease. Most importantly, the
problems people with alopecia face. After analysing these sources I came to the conclusion that the
most impactful effect of the disease on affected people is the psychological toll it causes. As a result, I
decided that a solution to this problem is to change society s views on hair loss.

Essay Comparing The Book Of Job And Aesop s Fables
The Book of Job and Aesop s Fables, despite their stark differences in characters, style, and rhetoric,
both share similar themes, including love, loss, and the importance of lending a helping hand. The
Shepard and the Lion, demonstrates how imperative it is to take the time to assist others. In the fable,
the Shepard removes a thorn from the lion s paw. Later on the Shepard was falsely accused of a crime
and at the next public games...thrown to beasts, (p.626). However, the lion recognizes the Shepard and
in the end, the lion is spared and the man set free. When one takes time to helps those in need, it is
likely that others will be willing to do the same when you are in need. Although, this lesson is not
plainly stated in the Book of Job, the actions of Job indicate the importance of helping others, even if
they seem undeserving. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The men conclude, Job must have committed an act(s) worthy of punishment. Zophar the Naamathite,
implies Job is deserving of a punishment greater than what he has received, (11:1 12). Once God
spoke to Job, he asked that Job pray for his friends (p.217), Job obliged. Rather than condemn his
friends, as they did to him, Job prayed for them, hinting that he cares about them, as well as validating
his selflessness. Even though Job lost everything, including his home, family, and health, he continues
to love and worship God. Love, is not as prominent of a theme in the fables analyzed for the course,
nevertheless, in The Wolf in Sheep s Clothing, one possible lesson is, love yourself as you are and do
not try to be someone that you are not. However, a strong theme seen throughout both is loss or rather

Carrie is an Intense and Amazing Book by Stephen King
The book that I chose for my 3rd quarter book report was Carrie by: Stephen King. The book is about
a sixteen year old girl name Carrietta White, who lives in Chamberlain, Maine with her mother
Margaret White. Carrie attends Bates High school which isn t really a pleasant experience for her, at
school Carrie is constantly mocked and teased by her peers because of the way she dresses, looks, and
her weight. At home things are much worse for Carrie because of her overly religious and abusive
mother Margaret. When she is accused of being sinful or disrespectful to her mother Carrie is
constantly put into the closet where her mother locks her in there for hours until Carrie has prayed and
asked god for her forgiveness. Margaret doesn t want Carrie to experience regular things her peers do
because she is afraid that Carrie will meet a boy and have an unwanted child, just like she did. Carrie
soon experiences her telekinetic powers in an incident at school, and begins to use them on household
objects such as chairs, tables, and books. As the story develops Carrie s powers become stronger and
Chris Hargensen plots revenge on Carrie, for getting her detention and not being allowed to attend the
prom. As prom night comes around Carrie ends up going with Tommy Ross and has a great time, until
she has a cruel prank played on her, and ends up using her gift as a weapon to kill and destroy. Who:
Sue Snell is relevant to the sequence of the plot because without Sue the outcome of the

Degree Programs
Topic: Degree Programs at Penn State Lehigh Valley Purpose: To inform the class about the degree
programs the Lehigh Valley campus has to offer. Central Idea: It is important to be educated about
what the degree programs entail. I believe that all of us are here for a reason. Every moment of our
lives has been set up to bring us to where we are now. At this very moment, we share something in
common. We are all Penn State students. Despite attending a commonwealth campus, our degrees
remain solely Penn State. But how much do you know about Penn State in its entirety. I m sure you all
know that Penn State offers an outstanding 160 degree programs. Two years of those programs can be

Course work emphasizes classroom applications in technology integration, diverse learning, and
accommodating students with special needs, and state and national education standards. Students can
also complete two years of course work at the Lehigh Valley campus before transferring to another
Penn State campus to complete the education degree. But what makes Penn State Lehigh Valley so
great? PSULV offers the opportunity to complete two years of your general education program here.
The general education program enables students to gain understanding of international
interdependence and cultural diversity and develop consideration for values, lifestyles, and traditions
that may differ from their own. Besides that, what else makes this campus two year degree program so
unique? Well, according to second year Communications and Media Studies student Emily Finnegan I
didn t think I was mature enough to live on my own and PSULV prepared me for Penn State main.
First year Biology student Lindelle George says I feel good attending Penn State Lehigh Valley
because they have so many opportunities. They offer a wide variety of classes and it feels more like a
community. I chose to get my biology degree from here because I really wanted to get a good
education from a great school. She jokes that in the

Karl Marx Religion
Karl Marx himself was an atheist and Marxism is an atheistic ideology, meaning that they take
distance from the belief that there is a God . He meant that in the country of reason the mere existence
of God can have no meaning . He gave an example that if you brought your God to a foreign country
that worshipped other Gods, they will provide proof of the non existence of your God . However,
Marx did not address religion in a systematic fashion in any of his writing but at the same time he
touches on the subject recurrently in books, speeches and pamphlets. The reason for this is that one
can clearly see that his critique of religion forms one piece of his overall critique of society. In order to
be able to understand his critique of religion,

Tyler Perry
Tyler Perry s films produce a huge number of dollars in the movies, however many are not persuaded
that we ought to praise his prosperity. Tyler Perry and his extraordinary thought on the Black people
group leaves many individuals troubled about this depiction. Perry s film Diary of a Mad Black
Woman and Madea s Family Reunion both define generalizations operating at a profit group. Tyler
Perry movies are not propelling the dark group but rather affecting the disgrace on African Americans.

A Synopsis of Accounting for Business Combinations
A SYNOPSIS OF ACCOUNTING FOR BUSINESS COMBINATIONS,
INTANGIBLES AND GOODWILL IMPAIRMENT
INTRODUCTION
During the 1980 s and 1990 s a great number of business mergers and acquisitions took place. The
generally accepted accounting principles to record the initial transaction and to account for the
acquired assets during their estimated useful lives this were well established.
Over time however, users of financial statements began to question whether those principles and
practices accurately reflected the market realities regarding the assets, their useful lives and their
contribution to a company s value. In addition, intangible assets have become increasingly more
important as an economic resource.
It was apparent that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
SFAS 141 is based on the proposition that all business combinations are essentially acquisitions, and
thus all business combinations should be accounted for in a consistent manner with other asset
acquisitions.
FAS 141 begins with the declaration that the accounting for a business combination follows the
concepts normally applicable to the initial recognition and measurement of assets acquired, liabilities
assumed or incurred...as well as to the subsequent accounting for those items.
A business combination occurs when an entity acquires net assets that constitute a business or acquires
equity interest of one or more other entities and obtains control over that entity or entities.
In a combination effected through an exchange of cash or other assets it is easy to identify the
acquiring entity and the acquired entity. In a combination effected through an exchange of equity
interests, the entity issuing the equity interest is generally the acquiring entity. However, in some
business combinations, known as reverse acquisitions, it is the acquired entity that issues the equity
interests. (Paragraphs 15 19 offer guidance in this complex area.)

Write An Essay On The High Roller Coasters
I buckle my seatbelt and pull down the orange safety harness, my stomach starts to get butterflies. The
workers who look like they are still in high school have our lives in their hands. They go down the line
dragging, as if they are sleepwalking. The thumbs up is given to the booth, the green circle button is
held down for us to start creeping past the gate. Click click click, click click, click! We start to climb
up in the sky on the Renegade at Valleyfair. It is then that my heart starts to pound. I start to doubt that
this wooden roller coaster is going to hold us. We are so high up we can see almost all the rides and
attractions. I find the entrance of The High Roller, a coaster I was trying to find earlier. We reach the
top of the almost hundred foot tall peak, my stomach is in my mouth, I can t see the bottom of the
drop. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At the last second I force my hands in the air, a huge smile comes to my face as we dip down, after
what seems like eternity, we finally hit the bottom and the car really starts to gain speed, everything
starts to seem like a big blur. We go over what looks to be a small bunny hop, but there is so much
speed I am literally floating in my seat. My bottom returns to it s place when we make a quick turn to
the left and back to the right. We go over 3 more laterals and we finally get a chance to catch our
breath from screaming and yelling for our lives. The furious coaster takes off again and we go left and
right on to steep banked curves, we go onto a couple more laterals and the brakes start to squeal, we
are coming to the end of the ride. As we are about to make the one hundred eighty degree turn, the
whole line that is waiting to ride the coaster is watching

Cultural Diversity in the Neighborhood
Marco Navarro
Dr. Benjamin Looker
Urban Crisis ASTD 322
February 23, 2009
Cultural Diversity within the Neighborhood Sitting in a dark theatre, an audience begins to rustle in
their seats with excitement, anxiously awaiting the start of the show. The lights dim and the
anticipation are diminished as the lights come up, the set of a street side unveils, and the beat begins.
In one instant, the audience is transported from a simple theatre to the lively street side of the
neighborhood of Washington Heights, New York. This production is the 2008 Tony winning Best
Musical In the Heights. Written and composed by Lin Manuel Miranda, the show combines hip hop
and rap music with a variety of dancing styles to portray the life in the ... Show more content on

In In the Heights, Usnavi celebrates his migrancy by proudly stating that he comes from the greatest
little place in the Caribbean, Dominican Republic (Miranda). Usnavi takes pride for his country and
flaunts to the audience about his heritage. In the past, this pride of the native land never would have
occurred for those who boasted about being immigrants were often profiled and treated differently.
This change is essential in understanding how immigrants are able to more easily accept American
culture by allowing a piece of their own culture stay within them which helps identify the feeling of
community within the neighborhood better. In Susan Dicker s article about the transitional community
within the Dominican culture in Washington Heights, Dicker argues that complete assimilation for all
immigrants into American culture is highly unlikely which causes cultural diversity. Immigrants, who
move to a different place with a pre established sense of culture and identity, maintain an attitude to
refute the new culture in order to maintain theirs (Dicker 13). People do not like to fully submit
themselves to assimilation because in order to do so, they must give up their own culture and accept
another that is not truly theirs. The cultural ties experienced at an early age are never easily lost and
therefore remain within the population. Another reason why assimilation does not occur is that
immigrants usually must learn a new language, which is difficult

Media And Gender Stereotypes
Sheryl Sandberg, an activist, once said We can each define ambition and progress for ourselves. The
goal is to work towards a world where expectations are not set by the stereotypes that hold us back,
but by our personal passion, talents, and interests. Media is easily accessible to many and is where
millions look for role models. Through the media, high standards are set for women, men, and
children all more than likely unattainable. Body types are knit picked along the side of what people
wear. TV programs will speak about their political views, opinions, and beliefs and at this age, it s
hard to understand what all of it truly means.
Most of the time we will just go with what everyone else believes, it s easier and they won t cause any
conflict. All of this is forced upon us without asking for it, eventually affecting the outlook on certain
things and permanently altering emotions towards serious matters. This is something that I would not
wish upon anyone, but it is actually happening to everyone. The media is full of perception altering
advertisements and television programs that cause the subconscious to forever be revised to the
opinions and beliefs presented.
The most commonly discussed problem with media advertisements is the stereotypes that are fed,
especially gender stereotypes. Stereotyping is described as a widely held but fixed and oversimplified
image or idea of a particular type of person or thing. Print advertisements, television
programs/commercials,

The Rosetta Stone By Thomas Halloran
The Rosetta Stone
By Thomas Halloran
The Rosetta Stone was a crucial part of deciphering hieroglyphs for mankind. The Rosetta Stone is a
large piece of dark grey granite. The Stone is three feet nine inches long and two feet four inches
wide. The stone approximately weighs a massive 1,680 pounds. Carved by the Egyptians in 196 B.C.,
the Stone contains a portion of text reflected in three scripts. One of the scripts, Hieroglyphs, had not
been deciphered when the Stone was discovered. The other two scripts are Demotic and Classical
Greek. Demotic is a language spoken by the Egyptians used in the Nile Delta. The Stone was
discovered by the French at the end of the 18th century. The Rosetta Stone was the key to translating

Through their whole life time, they would go by a nickname. If someone knew a person s true name
they would gain magical powers over that person. This is one reason why when rulers of Egypt took
the throne they had their name changed. The afterlife was important to the Egyptians, therefore the
burial was important to them also. Some citizens were cremated and some were mummified. The
Egyptians mummy was created to retain the body of an individual making it so the soul could achieve
immortality.
One of the few technological advancements of the period was the papyrus,of which the English word
paper, comes from. The ramp and lever were also developed by the Ancient Egyptians. A British
anthropologist discovered objects in an ancient childs grave appearing to be used for bowling, so it is
possible that they developed the sport of bowling. They were advanced in working with glass and
metals such as, bronze and gold. Aswell as their precision and beauty when it comes to architecture.
They valued personal appearance and hygiene very highly. The Ancient Egyptians regularly bathed
and scented themselves in perfume and other incense. They created cosmetics for both men and
women. The Egyptians lived in a modest house, raised a family of their own, and liked to relax when
possible. Although a difference between Egyptian culture and these other lands was that, they thought

Similarities Between The Puritans And William Penn
Both the Puritans and William Penn Viewed their colonies as holy experiments . How did they differ?
Penn viewed his colony as a colony in which everyone was treated equally, including blacks, women
and the Native Americans. This was unlike the Puritans who believed in slave labor and that women
should not be able to conduct their own business(aside from being literal, holding public office or
voting). The quakers in Pennsylvania believed that everyone had the same rights and liberties, Foner
writes, To Quakers, liberty was a universal entitlement, not the possession of any single people a
position that would eventually make them the first group of whites to repudiate slavery. (Foner 100)

Catholics and Jews from voting or holding public office. But toleration among Protestant
denominations flourished fueled by the establishment of new churches by immigrants as well as new
Baptist, Methodist and other congregations created as a result of the Great Awakening. (Foner 117) By

  • 2. A Comparison of Three Newspapers Articles on the Same Topic A Comparison of Three Newspapers Articles on the Same Topic In my essay, I shall compare the way in which three news publications, The Mirror, an example of the popular press, The Times, an example of the quality press and Newsweek, an American publication reported the same incident. Using these three reports, I shall compare the variations and similarities in the amount of factual information given, the interviews used, the language employed and finally, the layout and presentation of the various articles. On the 3rd of February 1998, a U.S. military jet sliced the wire of a cable car in the Italian ski resort in the Dolomites in Cavalese. This resulted in the untimely death of 20 tourists ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The tone is much more factual and is not as colloquial as popular press. The sentences are usually quite complex; hence the paragraphs are quite lengthy. The graphics are usually informative rather than biased or seeking attention. Moreover, in The Times, the sound effects would usually be limited to puns. Foreign publications, such as Newsweek, generally contain features of both popular press and quality press. The Mirror contained quite a lot of factual information. The article informed the readership that 20 skiers plunged 300ft to their deaths after a low flying American warplane sliced through the wire of their cable car. Similarly, The Times and Newsweek also provided this information. The article in The Times stated Twenty people fell three hundred feet to their death when an American military aircraft sliced the steel wire supporting a cable car carrying skiers. Like the other two articles, the article in Newsweek established that a U.S. fighter jet had clipped two cable cars and sent a gondola full of skiers tumbling to the ground. All three articles also confirmed that there were twenty victims. The Mirror and Newsweek gave more detail about this aspect. The Mirror stated that the victims were nine women, 10 men and one child. Newsweek also stated that the tourists originated from seven European countries. All three ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. John Mcphee s Rising From The Plains As I recently drove on Interstate 80, from Colorado to Iowa, I could not help but think of John McPhee s book Rising from the plains; and how from a different perspective a boring piece of land in the plains could reveal a rich history of geological cycles. McPhee is able to bring to life the study of geology in a way that is relatable by creating relationships between the landscape, people, and history through the use of transforming the same plot of land across eons of time. He uses several pages to discuss geology, followed by stories about the love family ranch as an overview of life on the very same plains four million years ago. This format for reading allows the author to build layers of science facts with story so that the humanistic element does not get distracted by the complex material. The reader develops a sense of the formation of the specific terms such as; the system, period, stage and age names, and thus overcomes the barrier of reading just geology facts. The passage for which all the specialized knowledge comes from is a man named David Love. Rather than using his education and experience for the benefit of private industry, David Love serves as supervisor of the environmental branch of the United States Geological Survey in Laramie, Wyo. Mr. Love, who was born in the Wind River Basin in central Wyoming in 1913 and who grew up on an isolated ranch there, joins McPhee on a drive across the vast open stretches of Wyoming s Interstate 80. The expedition of Lewis and Clark was a landmarking event in American history, but its significance goes beyond just the land they discovered. The Lewis and Clark Expedition was put forward so the two would be able to see and map out western America in search of new trade routes and passages. Lewis and Clark would have doubtfully survived had it not been with the aid of the Indians they met on their travels. Upon their controversial meetings with several Indian groups, Lewis and Clark were not respectful to the Americans they met on their journey. They were able to complete many trades with Indian groups, giving them things such as guns and receiving food and information along with other resources for their expedition. Sacagawea was a very helpful guide and interpreter for Lewis and Clark. She was a very important contributing aid to the success of the expedition. The relationship between Lewis and Clark and Sacagawea and her family was an example of respect between the two groups. After the help of Sacagawea, Lewis and Clark even persuaded them to give them Sacagawea s son so they could put him in United States schooling, and he could grow up healthy. Hence, the negative impacts of earnings management and accusing earnings management as one of the main reason of last decade financial scandals have forced accounting setters and financial regulators to provide solutions and initiatives for hindering earnings management. However, most of the attempts have failed, since earnings managements researchers found that managers still can achieve their earnings management objectives, through manipulating real activities. So it is more useful to examine the relationship between accounting responsibility in real earnings management. ???? There are some reasons for why managers manage earnings. At the basic level, the reasons are related to the performance of the firm with respect to some benchmark. This benchmark could be the previous period s performance that shows an improving trend, analyst s expectations or whatever benchmark is specified in a manager s compensation contract. Missing these benchmarks can be extremely costly because the relationship between stock price and compensation and earning is very non linear around the benchmarks. When firms are extremely close to the target, the incentives to take earning just over the target becoming exceedingly strong. In these cases, the firms will try and use some form of upwards earnings management to bump up earnings over the target. However, when firms are below their target, they have an incentive to make things worse for the following two reasons. Firstly, it is highly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. The Social Control Theory Of Criminology While most theories in criminology focus on the reasons and factors why people commit deviance, the social control theory focuses on the reasons why people conform to what is excecpted from society. The social control theory tends to revolve around questions such as why isn t everyone motivated to commit acts of deviance as well as why individuals conform. The basic premise of the social control theory is that criminality results when an individual s bond to society is weakened or broken. There are four social bonds in the social control theory, which are attachment, committment, belief and involvement. As an act of being good samartians, we took it to the card office, the best place to take a missing wallet. Although I had the tempation of opening the wallet to see who the person was or what was inside, I decided on Attachment is the emotional bond, which can be described as the individual s sensitivity to and interest in others. The reason why attachment is an observable factor is because people consider the embarrassment of being gulity of the crime or being charged for the crime. They also take into account how it might impact their relationships with their social groups such as family and friends. Attachment revolves around how much loyality people have towards social insititutions and care about the opinión of others. Social groups such as families and friends can impact the way people conform towards not committing crimes. Furthermore, the conformity to norms, awareness of the conscience, and the motives of the superego are what determine The more attached people are to social groups, the less likely they will be deviant. They realized that their populations, as with the other primates on Earth chimpanzees, gorillas, and bonobos are waning. An estimated 60,000 orangutans in total are left. Breen I believe what Breen is trying to say in his essay is that the Englishmen that came to Virginia were very different from the settlers of other colonies and they had a much different society develop than what was typical in the other colonies. They were a highly individualistic society. Breen believes that the personalities of those who came to Virginia were, in part what caused Virginia s society to become so individualistic. Being so individualistic didn t exactly work out so well for the structure of society or the well being of the colonists. Breen says that the first people to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Virginia had a slave population of 187,600 in 1770 (135). This number is more than double that of any other colony at the time. 4. I do agree with Breen s point of view and for the most part it agrees with our text. I would probably be more likely to agree with Breen that the people of Virginia did not form a military band and fight back against the Indians especially how the text talks about Indians remaining a strong presence. It wouldn t make much sense for the Indians to remain a strong presence if they are constantly being attacked by the settlers. I think the reason that the Indians stayed around is because Virginia was not effectively fighting them off because they didn t have any type of formalized military, or formalized anything for that matter, not even schools. 5. Slavery in New York City, 1731 ALAW For Regulating Negroes and Slaves in the Night Time I don t think that this document had too much to do with Breen s essay Looking Out For Number One but rather it comes slightly later. I do think that the drastic rise in slave labor shows how Virginia was willing to exploit people in order to turn a profit and how it would be necessary for them to enact laws regulating the liberties of slaves to keep them from rising up when the population ... • 12. The Role Of Uk Weaning Guidelines And The Sources Of... In another mixed method study to explore the knowledge of the UK weaning guidelines and the sources of weaning advice used by UK first time mothers (Moore et al, 2012), findings were quite similar to the first study. The use of elements from both quantitative and qualitative research approaches have been found to contribute positively to the research process (Johnson et al. 2007). This was the main methodological strength of this study together with its size although there remains the argument that combining two methods of research can be difficult (Giddings and Grant, 2006). Gildea et al (2009) support the use of the internet in obtaining information on weaning. The result showed 86% of the respondents had knowledge about the guidelines that related to weaning which resulted in later weaning. A significant number of the mothers got weaning information from different places, but health visitor advice had the most influence on the 26% of the mother s decision to wean, while the internet attributed to 25% and books to 18% of mothers. Nevertheless, 56% still attributed the source of conflicting advice to come from healthcare professionals. This supports findings by Moore et al (2012) who found that Health Visitors were inconsistent with the advice they gave on weaning guidelines and recommendations. This is despite the fact that they are the largest number of health professionals who give advice to postnatal mothers in the UK. This inconsistency in advice also contributes to ... They tell us about how the ancient Greek people looked at the world and how they explained the origins of the world. There are many different stories on many different gods, heroes, villains but today, one is gonna learn about the Greek god Pan. Pan has been a symbol of the force of nature for many ages. Pan has influenced so many supernatural writers. Some of those writers got famous off of the story that they wrote about Pan. For example the book The great god Pan by Arthur Machen did immensely well. Pan was the god of the wild, hunting and he was a companion of the nymphs. Pan was given by the greeks and his Roman name was Faunus. Pan power s states Like the other gods of olympus, Pan possessed enormous strength. (Greek gods, https://greekgodsandgoddesses.net) This shows that Pan was extraordinary strong. He could also run for long periods of time and he could not get injured. He could transform objects into different forms and was able to teleport himself from Earth to Mount Olympus and back. He is represented as very clever with a wonderful sense of humor. Pan was often in the company of the wood nymphs and other deities of the forest. There are many different assumptions to who people think Pan s parents are. His father may have been Zeus, Dionysus, Hermes, or Apollo. His mother may have been a nymph called Dryope, Penelope who later became the wife of Odysseus, or Aphrodite. ... • 14. Examples Of The First Circle Of Hell In Dante s Inferno In Dante s Inferno, Dante proposes an intriguing order for his nine circles of hell. Ignoring Limbo, Dante, intending to list the circles from the least grievous sin to the most grievous sin, orders the circles starting from lust, going to gluttony, greed, then wrath. Dante provides a thought provoking experience for the reader causing one to redefine his understanding of sin and God s judgement. After limbo, Dante presents the first circle of hell as the punishment for the lustful. While many, if given the choice, would not place lust as the least of all the sins, Dante does for good reason. In Appendix C, Aquinas expounds on Dante s argument that sins committed in passion are not as grave as premeditated sin. First, as sin consists chiefly in an act of the will, it follows that, other things being equal, a sin is all the more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While this punishment does not seem as severe as the other circles, it is symbolic of the greedy s fruitless pursuit of earthly riches. Dante places this in an even lower circle of hell because in regards to the sin of miserliness or squandering money, the abusers are even more aware of their sin. Furthermore, sin s underlying principle is even more visible here. According to Aquinas reasoning of sin in Dante s Inferno, pride is at the root of all sin. Whereas pride regards sin as turning away from God, to Whose commandment man refuses to be subject, for which reason it is called the beginning, because the beginning of evil consists in turning away from God (Aquinas, 385). Aquinas articulates that pride is the basis for all sin, because pride takes place when we refuse to be subject to the will of God, and the beginning of all sin is when we first turn away from God. Those who are greedy and miserly refuse to obey God s command of taking care of the poor and rather horde as much money as they can to no ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

After the calculations you end up coming out with a rate of 14.87%. The third and final part of question three asks what rate you will need if the interest is compounded semiannually. All you have to do is double the amount of terms and you will come out with a lower number of 7.177%. Since the interest is compounded semiannually that means that you will need to times that number by two and you come out with your final number of 14.35%. In question four, Janet was asked to solve a question that deals with annuity payments, specifically, ordinary annuities. It starts by asking of how much you will make if you add $2,000 every year and it is compounded by 10% interest every year. These, for the most part, are future value problems. The first one comes out to be a future value of $12,210.20, which does not satisfy the need for $20,000. The next part asks what the value would be if the interest was compounded semiannually. You have to do an equation in order to find out what the effective annual interest rate. Through this equation you come out with a value of 10.25% and after the calculator calculations you come out with a future value of $12,271.11, also not meeting the demand for that first year of college. The next part asks what payment will you need in order to get to that $20,000 number and the present value comes to be $3,275.95. Next, the case asks what original payment you would need in order ... Alopecia Disease Abstracts During my research on alopecia I examined journals, articles and web sources in order to receive a better understanding of the disease, and the problems afflicted people have. To foster a greater understanding of the illness I researched general information on the disease. Most importantly, the problems people with alopecia face. • 19. Essay Comparing The Book Of Job And Aesop s Fables The Book of Job and Aesop s Fables, despite their stark differences in characters, style, and rhetoric, both share similar themes, including love, loss, and the importance of lending a helping hand. The Shepard and the Lion, demonstrates how imperative it is to take the time to assist others. In the fable, the Shepard removes a thorn from the lion s paw. Later on the Shepard was falsely accused of a crime and at the next public games...thrown to beasts, (p.626). However, the lion recognizes the Shepard and in the end, the lion is spared and the man set free. When one takes time to helps those in need, it is likely that others will be willing to do the same when you are in need. Rather than condemn his friends, as they did to him, Job prayed for them, hinting that he cares about them, as well as validating his selflessness. Even though Job lost everything, including his home, family, and health, he continues to love and worship God. Love, is not as prominent of a theme in the fables analyzed for the course, nevertheless, in The Wolf in Sheep s Clothing, one possible lesson is, love yourself as you are and do not try to be someone that you are not. In Susan Dicker s article about the transitional community within the Dominican culture in Washington Heights, Dicker argues that complete assimilation for all immigrants into American culture is highly unlikely which causes cultural diversity. Immigrants, who move to a different place with a pre established sense of culture and identity, maintain an attitude to refute the new culture in order to maintain theirs (Dicker 13). People do not like to fully submit themselves to assimilation because in order to do so, they must give up their own culture and accept another that is not truly theirs. The cultural ties experienced at an early age are never easily lost and therefore remain within the population.
