The purpose of this lab was to find out how the amount of time that has elapsed
affect the position of the car away from the point of origin. Our hypothesis was if
the time elapsed is longer, then the car is going to be further away from the point
of origin. In this lab the independent variable what you are changing is time. The
dependent variable what you are measuring is how far the car is from the point of
origin after a certain amount of time (3 seconds, 6 seconds, and 9 seconds). The
controls things that stay the same throughout the whole lab is the car we used, the
meter stick that we measured in centimeters with, and the 40 centimeters of tape that
we used to mark the position of the car. Materials we used was a car, 40 centimeters of

person would start the timer, one person would start the car, and then the other
person would place the tape on the ground after time limit. After each trial we
measured each piece of tape and how far away it was from the point of origin. The

origin with a small amount of the 40 cm. of tape. Fourth, the person that was in

In this paper, I will argue that the Mind Brain Identity Theory provides sufficient
grounds to accept Epicurus argument for death being annihilation. I will argue my
thesis by referring to Peter Carruthers The Mind Is the Brain to establish that one s
mental states are in fact brain states and will also refer to Epicurus Death is Nothing to
Us. Next, I will explain that if one accepts the Identity Theory then one should also
accept, as Epicurus argues, that death should not be feared, for it is annihilation. I
will conclude by refuting objections to the Identity Theory and the Epicurean
argument on death.
In order to accept the validity of the Identity Theory, one must have a thorough
understanding of it. It is a form of materialism which asserts that all mental states
and events are in fact physical states and events (Carruthers 301). For example, if I
were to put my hand on a hot stove, I would have a conscious awareness of the pain
of my burning flesh and it would provoke physical actions such as immediately
drawing back my hand and screaming. This instance illustrates Carruthers first
premise in the Identity Theory argument that conscious states and events, or my
awareness of the pain of burning my hand, is a causal condition for the occurrence
of physical states and events, which would be exemplified by me drawing back my

Learning and hearing something said in class such as the role chlorophyll plays in
the process of photosynthesis but then getting to see it happen in lab takes my
understanding to a much deeper level. Looking at the light absorbance graphs and
seeing that the chlorophyll doesn t absorb almost any green light and instead
absorbs a lot of blue light and red light. This reinforces what I have learned in class
and implants it in my brain forever.
The concepts I will learn from the bio department will immediately impact my life
in a few different ways. These concepts will help me with next semester when I am
taking anatomy. But they have already changed my perspective on life. When I go
outside and look and the different trees and the colors they are turning it makes me
thing of the photosynthesis lab. I walk around and I am less ignorant of how life
moves around

The Splintered Old Bench
No one will find me. I ll have hidden myself well. I part the green curtain as I walk,
armed only with a camera, pen and paper, and a book. Behind me, the overgrown
foliage and gnarled roots weave themselves back together, concealing the path I
have taken. A passerby will overlook my refuge and dismiss it as just another place
that nature has reclaimed from the materialistic world. A smile creeps across my
face as I anticipate my long sought solitude. I will be safe; no one will seek me here.
I will be left alone with my imagination.
The old wooden bench greets me as it leans its back against a sturdy pine tree. It
beckons to me to come share its secret world, to watch the day and all its happenings

Yet, despite the splinters, the bench has not fallen apart or rotted. A bench with this
exquisite view of Penobscot Bay would not let splinters faze it.
Creeping to the edge of the rock ledge, I am overwhelmed by the frightening
height. Although the path leading up to my refuge is obscured from view, the land
in front of the bench is barren rock, opening out onto a large expanse of sky.
Squinting in the sunlight, my eyes follow an osprey soaring free over the water. I
inhale deeply, letting the refreshing salt air rush through my lungs and clear my
head. I peer over the edge, and watch the receding tide far below. From my perch, I
witness the emergence of a whole new world from the depths of the ocean. Rocks,
seaweed, barnacles, and tide pools appear from nowhere, bringing sea life with it. The
soft waves lap against the rocks, singing in harmony with the cool breeze that drifts
through the trees, gently rustling the leaves.
Dizzy from the height, I retreat to the safety of the bench. Settling myself, I relax,
my worries draining away. I slip my sandals off and let my toes bathe in the sunlight.
There is always sunlight up here. Because of the height, the bench and the rocks
capture the first and last rays of sun. Toward dusk, the glare off the water is blinding,
but now, in the early morning, I welcome the sun, rejoicing as it chases the fog and
the remaining stars
