The Correlation Between Looking Preferences And Reaching...
This current study has been formulated on the basis that infants 2 years of age, and even below, have
the cognitive capacity to express preference when manipulating objects. Previous research which has
been observed shares similar concepts with this current study. This study, conducted by Christopher
Newman, Janette Atkinston, and Oliver Braddick (2001) in which the relationship between looking
preferences and reaching was explored in infants 5 15 months old infants. To be more specific, they
used preferential reaching between objects of different sizes in infants of different ages to explain the
dissociation in the development of visual processing and orientation in object manipulation. The
infants were presented with cylinders of different sizes, a small, medium, and large cylinder was
presented for the infants to interact with. According to Newman, Atkinson and Braddick (2001), The
largest object was too large for the younger infants to grasp easily with one hand (p. 563), and this had
most likely had a role to play in the preference of the infants. In regards to the results of the study,
Newman, Atkinson and Braddick (2001) found Infants of all ages in this experiment reached almost
compulsively for objects presented to them. However, although 5 8 /2 month old infants showed no
preference when reaching to objects of different sizes, 8 /2 12 month old infants showed a strong
preference for smaller objects (p. 568). It is likely, therefore, that this effect

Why Was George Washington Important
George Washington was the most influential figure of his time, he lead our young nation to freedom
with little military experience. Most people were drawn to Washington s leadership and overall
humbleness, he was a typical southern gentleman who was propper and polished. Although he knew
he wanted to be a leader in his nation, he could have never known that roughly two hundred years
later, he would still be the most influential figure in the Revolutionary War. So many things
throughout his life shaped him into an excellent leader and he wouldn t have been the same without
these challenges. As a child Washington liked to do what all young southern boys did, he hunted,
fished and played in the stream. Washington s difficult mother, Mary Ball Washington, often
complained that her eldest child, George, was ungrateful and neglected his duties to his mother.
Washington s father, Augustine Washington, died when young George was eleven. His father s death
brought hardship on the family, leaving behind George and his five other brothers and sisters
(Badertscher). Due to his father s death, Washington never was able to receive a formal education
from England. He did although receive some form of education from a school in ... Show more

Washington knew there was about 1,400 British troops isolated around Trenton, New Jersey. So he
decided to load his troops into boats and cross the Delaware River on Christmas night and launch a
surprise attack on the British. A spy of the British knew about Washington s plans to attack but they
were not concerned because they did not fear the Americans. Washington and his troops crossed the
river and totally blindsided the British during their Christmas celebrations, boosting the Americans
spirits (Mount Vernon). Washington devised the perfect plan to not only win a British battle, but he
knew he had to to something to cheer his troops up, and he found the right

The Great Gossip Girl By F. Scott Fitzgerald
Abbi Kopf
1.7.16
The Great Gossip Girl
A young man desperately battling society, wealth, and rich obnoxious friends in order to win the heart
of the perfect girl...is this the story of The Great Gatsby, or the CW s Gossip Girl? Both, actually: the
hit TV show mirrors Fitzgerald s most famous work through parallel themes and characters. Cynical
subjects such as doomed love and corruption of the upper class play a major part in both works, as
well as the story of fight to surmount class and poverty. This story actually played out a couple of
times over the course of Gossip Girl s intensely dramatic six seasons, but most notably between Dan
Humphrey and Serena Van Der Woodsen. Dan Humphrey was the James Gatz of Gossip Girl, still
struggling to become Jay Gatsby. He had a nice life with his father and sister in Brooklyn, but always
dreamed about something greater. When Nick finally told the reader Gatsby s true origin story, he
said, he invented just the sort of Jay Gatsby that a seventeen year old boy would be likely to invent,
and to this conception he was faithful to the end (p.104). Dan and Gatsby both had an idealized, or
Platonic, view of themselves and the way their lives would turn out, and they would stop at nothing to
get it. Dan created and used Gossip Girl as a way to get into Serena s world just Gatsby used Nick to
get Daisy back. Both men saw their dream girl as all the money and glamour and fame that they
wanted distilled into one person, a person whose voice

Guns, Germs, And Steel
Guns, Germs, and Steel
In his work, Guns, Germs, and Steel (W. W. Norton, New York, NY, 1997) Jared Diamond attempts to
explain why human history has carried out the way it has, he often refers to accounts from history to
support his argument. Accounts that will be deemed adequate will discuss specific groups of people, at
a specified period of time. Diamond suggests that guns, germs, and steel are three contributing factors
for why the world is in its current state. It is not difficult to recognize while reading, that the book
spends a large amount of time talking about germs and much less text discussing guns and steel. In
Guns, Germs, and Steel Diamond does adequately account for the historical development of guns and
steel, in the way he accounts for the role of germs in the history of human societies. It is no debate that
germs played a massive role in many important events in history, but guns came late, were not very
effective at first, and steel production was most important militarily. Diamond goes into incredible
detail, especially in his chapter The Lethal Gift of Livestock of his proposed history of germs in
relation to humans. He considers the difference in domesticated animals in the old world and new
world, attributes their power to the downfall of the Incan and Aztec empires when he writes, ...the
most advanced native societies of North America...their destruction was accomplished largely by
germs alone. (373 373, Diamond) It is fact that populations

All members should record downtime for delays that are not included in the standard such as
equipment battery changes, supervisor meeting, equipment problems, excessive congestion delay, and
any other time spent performing non standard work. All workers should have access to downtime

Common Cold Research Paper
The Common Cold: Cause and Effect The common cold is a simple viral infection of the nose and
throat. It has more than 3 million US cases per year. It spreads easily, is self treatable, is self
diagnosable, lab tests and imaging are not required, and is short term, so it almost always leaves
within days to weeks. Although more than 100 viruses can cause a common cold, there are two main
ones. They are the Rhinovirus, which is most active in early fall, spring, and summer. It causes 10% to
40% of colds. The second one is the Coronavirus, which is most active in winter and early spring. It
causes 20% of colds. They spread by airborne respiratory droplets for example, coughs or sneezes, by
skin to skin contact ,handshakes or hugs, by saliva which is kissing or shared drinks, and by touching
a contaminated surface for example, blankest or doorknobs. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The first one is sneezing, which is to make a sudden involuntary expulsion of air from the nose and
mouth due to irritation of one s nostrils. Then, it s watery eyes, which is when your eyes are filled with

nasal mucus production, leading to watery nasal secretions that discharge from the nostrils or drip
down into the throat. A stuffy nose is basically the same, however it doesn t drip down. Finally, it s an

Unit 082 Promote Creativity and Creative Learning in Young Children.
Outcome 1: Understand the concepts of creativity and creative learning and how these affect all
aspects of young children s learning and development. 1. Analyse the differences between creative
learning and creativity.
Creativity involves being imaginative and original. Creative learning is about problem solving.
Creative Learning:
Creative learning is about how children are actively involved in their own learning and ability to make
choices and decisions. This can be achieved through providing a creative environment allowing
exploration through play and praising creative efforts. Creativity is about risk taking and making
connections, allowing children to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
3. Critically analyse how creativity and creative learning can support young children s emotional,
social, intellectual, communication and physical development.
The key characteristics in creativity can support young children s development in a number of ways.
Emotionally they learn how to manage frustrations if a project isn t going to plan or can feel happy
and proud and a sense of achievement when it is completed. Socially children can build up self
confidence by working alongside or with others, creating something to share and thereby making
friends.
Intellectually they are learning about problem solving, numeracy and developing their reading and
writing skills. Children s ability to communicate with peers and adults develops through creative play
as well as their overall speech and listening skills. Physically, creativity can help develop fine motor
skills by children using materials such as crayons, paints and sticking. Participating in movement
activities such as dance or drama (role play) also enhances the overall physical development of a
child.
For example, during a cooking activity children are learning many skills through this creative process,
they may feel happy and excited about cresting their own food. They are sociable by working with
adults to assist them and cooking for

Argumentative Essay Smoking
The numbers of people who smoke have increased over the years. Although they are equipped with
the knowledge of how unhealthy smoking can be, people still choose to smoke. It is a personal choice
and a highly addictive habit. Smokers choose to subject themselves to the health risks of smoking. It is
not for the government or any third party to dictate whether or not a person should be allowed to
smoke. However, smoking does not only affect the smoker negatively. It also affects all the people
around those who smoke because when people smoke in public the smoke travels everywhere through
the air, and the negative effects of the smoke affects all living, breathing creatures. Therefore smoking
should be banned in all public places.
People who smoke in public portray a bad example. Children are easily influenced in their growing
stages. They imitate the people around them because they cannot differentiate between right and
wrong. Therefore they perceive the actions they see around them as the way thing should be. Besides
that, teenagers who see people smoke in public take it as precedent to start smoking as well. There is a
saying that goes monkey see monkey do , which tells us that people imitate the actions of others as
they see it in their daily lives. Teenagers happen to think that smoking makes a person cool . When
they see adults doing it on the streets, it strengthens their belief in the coolness of smoking. Some
teenagers think that smoking marks their transition

The Function Of Sleep Behavior
Across species, animals spend a substantial minority of their lives sleeping. In fact, humans spend on
average approximately one third of their lives asleep (Colten and Altevogt, 2006). With such devotion
of time resources and the his tells us, from an evolutionary standpoint, that sleep is an important part
of the success of an animal. But what fitness does sleep confer to an organism? Although sleep occurs
across many species of animals, the function of sleep behavior is not fully understood. Studies might
suggest that this behavior might play a role in several important processes, such as the regeneration of
tissue and energy management (Sara, 2017, Rasch and Born, 2013). Recent work in the field suggests

As early as the 1950s, scientists have parsed the main stages of sleep. In one such study, eye
movements, recorded by electrooculograms (EOG) correlated with the brain activity in
electroencephalograms(EEGs) as well as respiratory rate, indicating the existence of distinct sleep
states which were not randomly generated (Aserinsky and Klietman, 1953). The discovery of distinct
states showed sleep was not just a passive behavior. Instead, it consists of three to four distinct states
as well as REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, each with their own unique brain activity.
While REM sleep has been in the scientific spotlight since its discovery for its role in consolidation of
emotional memory (Sara, 2017), recently more studies have begun to focus on the role of slow wave
sleep. Slow wave sleep (SWS) encompasses the stage 3 4 subset of non REM sleep and is
characterized by delta waves that consist of slow oscillations of activity. This type of sleep occurs
primarily at the onset of sleep and time spent in SWS declines in humans as aging occurs. SWS seems
to be most important in the consolidation phase, though the mechanisms of this consolidation are still
being explored in the scientific community. However, the method of this memory consolidation is
currently a subject of hot debate. What caused scientists to link memory and sleep, particularly SWS?
Research as early as 1914 began to point to a decrease in memory capacity capabilities

the idea from a poem by Arthur Brooke called the tragical history of Romeus and Juliet which had

the Democratic Party. The main concern of Baum and Bryan was the nature of the money supply in
the United States, and in the Mid Western States in their concern. In America during the 1890s, in

This essay proves that graduating students in Ontario should only study literature in a Grade 12

written by Canadian writers. This is because all Ontario students should become familiar with
literature from our province. Three reasons for this are; the need to focus on our own Canadian culture
and despite being surrounded by many other cultures, the need to promote and establish our own
writers is there, as well as the need to encourage younger Canadian authors.

Mental Health Counseling Became A Licensed Profession Essay
Mental Health Counseling became a licensed profession, when Virginia became the first state to pass a

is heading in the future (and why)? The counseling profession is not only the newest profession of its

Being a professional, goes beyond one s role as a counselor. Being a professional includes advocating

India s Impact On The City Of India
When I think of India I think of such a dry desert place. Two months ago that was not the case for a
specific area in India. Chennai, India had terrible flooding that put a halt to transportation, and some
people lost their houses including everything that was inside of them. This natural disaster took place
near the end of last year. The week of November 15th Chennai and its suburbs received on again off
again rainfall that lasted almost an entire week. Very similar situation on November 23rd. At the

The cause of this flood was a winter monsoon. This is why the end of November beginning of
December had such heavy rainfall. This area plans on winter monsoons to fill their main water
supplies. They just didn t plan for this much moisture in such a short amount of time. Normal amount
of rainfall for Chennai in a year is 139 centimeters. In 2015 During the same time frame Chennai
received 1609 milometers and 1815 milometers (Rela et al, 2016, p.2). Although 2015 s numbers were
much larger the major issue is those numbers occurred in only a 4 5 day period compared to almost
three months. The first rainfall which was November 15th caused some light flooding in areas that
were low. Rivers, lakes, and marshlands raised from the first rainfall and did not have time to go back
down to their regular levels. Because there was already some flooding from the first amount of rain
everything flooded with the next rainfall. On December 1st parts of Chennai and areas around
received 49 centimeters in twenty four hours. For the following five days it continued to rain, just not
at the same intensity level it did on December first. Monsoons are what fill the water reservoirs that
are west and southwest of Chennai. These reservoirs are what supplies water for agriculture and for
the city s water demands. All most all the moisture they receive in those three months supplies them
with drinking water for the year. Kosasthalayar, Cooum, and Adyar are

Analysis Of Steven Brill s Are We Any Safer
In Steven Brill s Are We Any Safer, an article which appeared in the September 2016 issue of The
Atlantic, the rhetor attempts to educate the audience on the issue of post 9/11 security, and weather or
not it has improved safety or not. The author makes his rhetorical response effective by using ethos,
pathos, and logos to appeal to the audience. Ethos is the credibility of the rhetor, an essential part to
any rhetorical response. No audience would waste their time listening to an unclarified rhetore. Pathos
is emotional appeal, this can be used to influence the audience s opinion, or to gain solid audience
engagement. Logos is the logical appeal of the response. Does the piece make sense to the audience?
If logos is lacking the rhetor has failed. In Steven Brill s article, he expertly balances resources and
constraints, while using ethos, pathos, and logos to write a fitting response to the exigence of post 9/11
security efforts.
In Steven Brill s Are We Any Safer, the exigence of the response is whether or not post 9/11 security
precautions have been effective or not. Brill makes this clear by comparing and contrasting security
pre and post 9/11. Brill says that on september 11th there were 16,000 poorly trained... private
screeners (62). As compared to today s 46,000 screeners, almost all federal employees, trained by the
Transportation Security Administration (62). This is just one of countless comparisons the rhetor
makes throughout the article. The real issue

Essay on Names in The Odyssey and The Bible
Importance of Names in The Odyssey and The Bible
Two of the most widely studied ancient works are Homer s Odyssey and the book of Genesis from the
Bible. Each of these texts provides a unique viewpoint of an early civilization. In both of the texts, one
can learn not only stories about great heroes, but also about the way that these peoples lived and what
they believed. Many interesting parallels can be drawn between the two developing societies shown in
the Odyssey and the book of Genesis. One parallel is the importance placed on names by each culture.
Although viewed as important in different ways, the value placed on a name shows a striking
similarity between the evolving cultures of both the Greeks and the Hebrews. ... Show more content

For example, when Athena, disguised as Mentês, introduces herself to Telemachus, she says, My name

and honor, but also that of one s ancestry. If a man s family was particularly honorable or
dishonorable, it was instantly obvious because of the renown and history that stood behind his name.
The name was truly the most important possession of any man in early Grecian culture. This is
probably best evidenced by Odysseus encounter with the cyclops, Polyphemos. In the beginning,
Odysseus merely tells Polyphemos that he is Noman, a man with no history or background, about
whom the cyclops does not know if he should fear or welcome, a man whom he could never find
again. After he has injured Polyphemos and is away from him, however, Odysseus tells his name,
saying, ...your blinder was Odysseus, the conqueror of Troy, the son of Laërtês, whose address is in
Ithaca! It seems that Odysseus cannot stand the thought of this great victory not being added to the
history of his name, and, although it gets him in lots of trouble, thinks it much worse to do a great
deed unknown than to suffer the consequences of having it known. This example clearly summarizes
the higher and deeper purpose of a name in ancient Grecian culture, to be a witness for the man
himself and his character. In the Odyssey, Homer also uses the names

In the first experiment he covered all the windows with shutters and pierced a hole in one of them
allowing a beam of light to go across the room. Then he placed the prism to refract the light on the

showed that the light was refracted. In his second experiment he did all the same things except now he
put another prism upside down in front of the other prism. This caused the light to be a single circular
strand of light again. In his last experiment he took the same conditions as the first experiment, but
this time he isolated one color by allowing only that color through a cad with a hole in it. Then on the
other side of the card there was a second prism, when the light passed through the prism it turned out

Female And Male Reproductive Systems
The resources available in this course for the week 3 readings of The Female and Male Reproductive
Systems were helpful. The resources were beneficial and in depth and provided detailed information
about the reproduction process for males and females. The three resources I found helpful this week in
learning about the puberty and the reproduction system were the interactive glossary, anatomical
images, and the self care assessments to check for any unordinary signs or issues. The resources
helped to enhance the learning and provided a better understanding of reproduction for both genders.
The reproductive process is a natural part of life. It signifies that body is in the process of transforming
a girl or boy into young women and men and eventually into adults. The interactive glossary was a
great resource to use for multiple reasons. It contained a dictionary for students to type the word
needed defined and view the meanings as well as show where what part of the Human Sexuality book
the term originated. The interactive materials such as anatomical reviews, interactive reviews,
flashcards, resources, links, practical quizzes, self assessments, and web exercises provide in depth
knowledge on an important topic.
The anatomical images as well as the text explaining the reproduction process was enlightening. The
images identified areas affected during the reproduction process and anatomical positions of the
genital areas as well as different parts of it that play a crucial

Edmund Spenser Research Paper
Edmund Spenser was born into a relatively poor family in East Smithfield, London, England in 1552
(there remains a degree of ambiguity to the exact date of his birth). This information is acquired from
sonnet lx. in the Amoretti where he speaks of having lived 41 years, as of 1595. Although he was
related to an affluent and noble Midlands family of Spencer, his own immediate family was not
particularly wealthy. There also remains some ambiguity to the specificities of Spenser s childhood,
though it is known that he was entered as a poor boy in the Merchant Taylor s grammar school, where
he studied primarily Latin, with specks of Hebrew, Greek, and music thrown in sporadically. Edmund
Spenser began his illustrious writing career as early as 16, as there are poems of his found in a

This expansive knowledge of the traditional forms and themes of lyrical and narrative poetry offered
sufficient foundations for the formulation of his own highly original compositions. Without the study
of the Roman epic poet Virgil s Aeneid, the 15th century Ludovico Ariosto s Orlando furioso, and,
later, Torquato Tasso s Gerusalemme liberate, Spenser would not of been able to create his heroic, or
epic, poem The Faerie Queene. Without Virgil s Bucolics, and the later tradition of pastoral poetry in
Italy and France, Spenser would not have came up with and written the The Shepheardes Calender.
Lastly, without the Latin, Italian, and French examples of the highly traditional marriage ode and the
sonnet and canzone forms of Petrarch and succeeding sonneteers, Spenser could not have written his
most notable lyric, Epithalamion, and its accompanying sonnets,

Why Was Charles I Called Lucky
This is the connection of Charles Lucky Luciano and the US government during World War II. While
locked up, he was continually reading the newspaper reports of Allied victories and Lucky got
annoyed. He wanted to be part of the action and if the U.S. government was appreciative of his help
against the enemy agents in his homeland, then they d be knocked out if he got his hands dirty and

would volunteer to act as a spy or liaison officer for the troops on the front line in Sicily. He would put
his life on the line by being parachuted into action, behind enemy lines and use his substantial
influence to win the war for America. Lansky laughed, picturing him landing on top of a church tip.
But Lucky couldn t see the humor in it at all, as he was very serious. This story takes a lot twists and
turns from the start. Lucky was born Salvatore Luciana in 1897 in the Sicilian sulfur mining town of

When man first walked on the moon it was a very big accomplishment for mankind especially the
U.S.A., many people wrote articles or simply talked about and shared their opinions on this huge
accomplishment. In the text that appeared on Times magazine titled, Man Takes First Steps on the
Moon , one can see how much of an accomplishment it was for the U.S and many other people to have
been able to walk on the moon. In the text ethos and logos are used a few times to be able to make a
more possibly effective text on people reading the article and be able to show how much of a huge
deal this was for mankind. The following sentence is the first sentence in the paragraph which says a
lot about what the text is going to go towards, Neil Armstrong became the first man to take a walk on
the moon s surface early today. , seeing that the first sentence is about how a man walked on the moon
it shows most likely the rest of the text will be based around or on this man s actions. The next
sentence shows how many people including the president and pope expressed how it was a huge
accomplishment for mankind for a man to walk on the moon and make it back to Earth safely, At
Castelgandolfo the Pope greeted news of the lunar landing by exclaiming: Glory to God in the highest
and peace on earth to men of goodwill! , it makes sure to state it is the pope talking about the moon
landing.

Johnny Shanley Doubt Summary
In John Patrick Shanley s Doubt , a priest is accused by a nun of raping the first African American boy
of St. Nicholas, a Catholic Church and school in the Bronx, New York. This parable is placed in the

Why or why not? I do not believe that the people of Charleston should have done more in the situation
of what they faced. On June 17, during a shooting at the Emmanuel African Methodist Episcopal
Church in Charleston, South Carolina, nine people were killed during a Bible study session by a
troubled, 21 year old boy, Dylann Roof. This situation, although disastrous, was handled in a very
peaceful and respectful way. The days following the events that unfolded showed that people do not
need violence, anger, and hate, to push their words into society. I feel that these citizens, who mourned
the loss of lives of innocent people, fulfilled a manner of respect to those who passed away. I do feel,
however, that I personally would have a harder time forgiving someone for such monstrous acts. I am
not religious, but no matter what, it isn t a thought I turn away from. Everyone finds something to

Music as a Stress Reliever
They say music is one of the biggest stress relievers while acting gives you a chance to engulf yourself
into a character and be someone else for a change. Together these two create Musical Theater, possibly
one of the best two combinations known to man. Musical Theater is a worldwide form of
entertainment that has been around since ancient times and exhibits emotion through a series of acts
which include singing, dancing and scripted acting. Different areas of the world follow unique
storylines which are relevant to their past and current events. The beginning of Musical Theater dates
back to ancient times and originates mainly from the Romans, Greeks and Natya Shastas and
interestingly enough, it also dates back to The Harlem Renaissance Era. In the third BC Roman
comedies began to include dance and music. The Romans attached metal slabs to the bottom of their
shoes helping them to dance better. These shoes were called Sabilla shoes which now have evolved
into tap shoes. In the fifth BC ancient Greeks followed in the Romans footsteps by including dance
and music into their theatrical plays. PARAGRAPH ABOUT ROMAN RENAISSANCE ERA Later in
the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, religious dramas with chants and poetic lines transformed slowly
into musicals as they began to add music into the dramas. In the 1700s ballad and comic operas, which
were considered early Musicals, grew in popularity throughout Britain, France and Germany

The Alternate Ending Of The Lord Of The Flies
Lord of the Flies has many important themes and with an alternate ending, there are many new
concepts for a theme introduced. Lord of the Flies has the theme of civilization versus savagery, which
can be seen through Jack and Ralph. There are many similarities between the alternate ending and the
original ending, but there are also many differences that can be noted. Lord of the Flies is a complex
novel with a complex ending that can be analyzed to find the deeper meaning. The original ending to
Lord of the Flies had Ralph running from the hunters, just to eventually find himself on the beach with
a naval officer waiting to take the boys back to civilization. He had run from the hunters for fear of the
stick sharpened on both ends as was stated by Samneric on page 273. The stick was going to be used
for Ralph s severed head like it was for the Lord of the Flies. Ralph had wanted to stay as one group
and pushed for civilization and rescue. Ralph clung to civilization throughout the entire book and even
at the end without the conch or Piggy, he remained civilized and avoided becoming savage like Jack
and the hunters. The alternate ending was not the same outcome for Ralph. Ralph had descended to
savagery and lost sight of civilization and rescue. In the book he had moments where he forgot about
wanting to be rescued, like on page 245; He paused lamely as the curtain flickered in his brain. This
shows he had already started to lose sight of civilization but Piggy was

North Korea develops nuclear armed missiles able to reach the United States and South Koreans ask

Substantive due process and equal protection require review of subastance of the law or other

Gattegno And The Silent Way
Caleb Gattegno (1911 1988), one of the most prominent and productive educators of the twentieth
century, is best known for his innovative approaches to teaching and learning foreign languages (The
Silent Way). In 1972, Caleb Gattegno introduced The Silent Way, that is, a language teaching method
whose basic concept is that the teacher should remain silent much of the time, thus its name while the
students speak as much as possible. In the same way, Gattegno was under the impression that the
teacher should focus on the way students learn more often rather than how to teach. In fact, he
expressed support for language learning by problem solving, creative, discovering activity and all that,
which is directly opposed to drills such as seen in audiolingualism. He, on the other hand, contends
that students could naturally earn a new language like a child, through perception, awareness,
creativity, and other mental processes. Besides being critical of linguistic theory, he devoted his
thinking to a pedagogical perspective called the subordination of teaching to learning in that learners
demands are placed at the center of teaching, so teaching is subordinate or dependent to learning.
Gattegno holds that understanding the spirit of a language that ... Show more content on

Saving The Israelites Research Paper
Saving the Israelites
In the Book of Genesis, Joseph is utilized by God to save the Israelites which started due Joseph s
boasting habits. His story begins with his ten brothers and himself working for his father. Joseph had
tendencies to share his dreams in which he was presented as higher than his brothers. As a result,
Joseph s angry brothers planned to kill him, but ends up in slavery due to his brother Rueben trying to

The Eyes Were Watching God Character Analysis
Model Amber Valletta wrote, We are what we see. We are products of our surroundings. A major
element of someone s personality is due to their environment or past events of their lives. Janie
Crawford is certainly not an exception. This is the story of Janie s Pursuit for love where she, a
widowed woman, unfolds her story to her friend Pheoby at dinner. She talks about her childhood with
Nanny and The Washburns, her relationships with Logan Killicks and Joe Starks or Jody, her
experiences with them along with events that took place while being with them or in relation to them,
how they affected her mentality, and how she grows up and matures throughout her life to the self
reliant woman telling the story. In The Eyes Were Watching God, by Zora Neale Hurston, the struggles

The beginning phase of Janie s development was her marriage to Logan, where she thought that the

My Writing That I Did Not Know Before
Over the course of this class I have learned many things about writing that I did not know before,
because I never had any great instruction before i came to college. In Grade school and high school,
when I got back a graded paper there would just be words crossed out, or punctuation corrections.
There would never be any explanation as to why I need to correct this, or why this is wrong. I would
go over the corrections and wonder how this is wrong and why does a comma go there but why doesn
t a comma go here. When reading the corrections and notes you made on each of my papers this year,
I more easily understood why something was wrong. I might not have made the same corrections in
the next paper, but each paper I got back I understood what was wrong, and what I needed to do to
correct it. I think I understood more about writing with each paper that I wrote this year. I might not
have shown it with each paper because I seem to always make the same errors. I always get mixed up
when using singular and plural nouns, using the same adjective throughout the paper, and not being
descriptive. I knew after you made the corrections why something is wrong, but I never seemed to
make the corrections myself, because I have a habit of making those same mistakes, and because it
sounds like it is right to me because I speak that way myself. Those errors I made in each of my
papers seemed to be right at the time of me writing them, but when you pointed them out to me after
giving back

Koyaanisqatsi Life Out Of Balance Analysis
In the 1982 film by Godfrey Reggio, Ron Fricke and Philip Glass, Koyaanisqatsi: Life out of Balance,
the filmmakers use imagery and music rather than dialogue to convey emotion, time and meaning. The
images in the film is primarily time lapse and slow motion footage of natural landscapes in the United
States, cities and human machinery/development. It requires skill and experience to create a film with
no dialogue that can effectively convey a message. Without words it would also be challenging
creating climax and convey time. The filmmakers of Koyaanisqatsi creatively used contrast in images
to display time passing and to build or lesson the drama to transition to the next scene. In photography
and filmmaking contrast refers to the difference in tones from the lightest tone to the darkest tone.
Throughout the film there are many aerial shots of canyons especially in chapter two, Organic. The
first canyon image in the movie is an aerial shot of what looks like the Grand Canyon. There is uneven
rock formation rows in front of each other. The sunlight is coming from behind the camera, creating
deep shadows on the front of the first valley and it creates deep shadows on the valley behind it. This
shot moves very slowly across this area and then cuts to several close up shots of parts of the canyon,
these images are low contrast they are mostly orange without distinct harsh shadows. After the
closeups, there are more aerial shots of the canyon. With each shot the valleys get shallower and the
contrast lowers. The shadows are less distinct as the land flattens, the land also has more and greener
as it gets flatter, one of the last canyon shot we see before the transition to the next chapter shows the
sun rising over completely flat desert like land in the area. For this chapter the filmmakers used
regression of contrast to create transition from one scene to the next. The flattening in land with the
lowering in contrast also shows time and how what used to be vibrant, with harsh and distinct lines
and shadows can fade and erode into flat land with no depth and no contrast. The next chapter is
named clouds, they use water to transition from dry harsh land to the flowing clouds in the sky. The
film shows rushing

The Shining By Stephen King
The Shining, a novel written by Stephen King followed by a film directed by Stanley Kubrick in 1980
is a horror/thriller narrative filled with many mysteries of its own. Initially, The Shining portrays itself
as an average The house is haunted but no one believes me story. However, as the plot progresses we
learn that there is much more that goes into the big picture. At its core, the narrative is about isolation,
psychological problems, alcoholism, and the suspense of an impending doom.
Jack, played by Jack Nicholson, is an average middle class man who takes on an opportunity to
become an off season caretaker at a large, isolated resort known as the Overlook Hotel. Along with
him he brings his wife, Wendy and his five year old son, Danny, to spend the winter alone at the Hotel.
Regardless of his wife s cold feet about relocating to such an isolated area during a violent season,
Jack, being the decision maker of the family, sticks to his guns. As a struggling writer, Jack believes
this job to be the perfect opportunity to take to his writing in a peaceful, serene setting where
seemingly nothing can get in his way.
We quickly learn that the Overlook Hotel, as large and luxurious as it is, is not as comforting, relaxing,
or even as welcoming as we are initially led to believe. In fact, it almost immediately exudes negative
energy, with a violent and savage undertone from the very beginning when the family moves in. Most
affected by this, is the son of the family, Danny,

Hl Hunley Submarine Essay
A submarine that may be unfamiliar to you was called the Pioneer. It was later renamed the H.L
Hunley. The most well known submarine during the American Civil War. This submarine belonged to
the Confederate States of America. It played a small part in the American Civil War. The Hunley,
nearly 4 high and 15ft wide ,was built in Mobile, Alabama and launched in July 1863. The Hunley
sank the USS Housatonic on February 1864. The Pioneer or shall I say the H.L Hunley became the
first ship ever to sink an enemy vessel during a war, but sadly the submarine itself sank along with all
of the crew members. No survivors. What they did is they drilled a hole in the enemy vessel and put
the dynamite into that hole and ignited the dynamite to blow a ... Show more content on

A man by the name of Clive Cussler found the Hunley after it was lost in the battle. The Hunley was
found in August 2000 four miles off the coast of Charleston, South Carolina.
Another known submarine, during this time, was called the CSS Virginia used from 1861 to 1862. The
South rebuilt the wrecked Union ship USS Merrimack into the ironclad battleship the CSS Virginia. It
was about 263 feet long. It had 10 heavy guns on it. It was the first ironclad ship made by the
Confederacy.
The North had a submarine too although it was not used in war. It was called the Intelligent Whale. It
was more commonly known as an experimental submarine. The Intelligent Whale was built in
Newark,New Jersey during the Civil War. It was powered by a dozen men turning a big crank. It was
nearly 30 feet long, weighing 46 tons, and was made of bolted together iron plates. In the 1850s,a man
named Lodner Phillips designed and employed a submarine for salvage work on the Great Lakes.
They continued successfully in this business for fully five years, 1851 55. Interestingly, their boat used
an underwater cannon to blast obstructions. Seeing the military value of their vessel, Phillips and Peck
offered it to the Navy, which responded by

An Examination Of President Jimmy Carter s Human Rights...

Carter was Absolute on Human Rights?
An Examination of President Jimmy Carter s Human Rights Policy in Argentina
Introduction:
President Jimmy Carter declared in his inaugural address that the US s commitment towards human
rights must be absolute . Human rights under Carter were anything but absolute. Under his presidency,
the US sent contradictory messages: one opposing human rights violations and another which seemed
to overlook human rights abuses. The issue of human rights was not Carter s only priority. In reality,
human rights ended up being one of many of the Carter administration priorities. All of these foci
collided, and left Carter with no real center to his foreign policy. One of Carter s first attempts to
implement his human rights initiatives was in Argentina. The authoritarian, rightist Juntas organized a
violent repression against political dissidents. Trying to distance himself from the policies of
Ford/Kissinger, Carter attempted to pressure the authoritarian regime to improve their human rights
record via reductions in military aid and economic sanctions. These maneuvers led to some mild
improvements initially, but ultimately came back to hurt the Carter administration after the Soviet
invasion of Afghanistan. Argentina s decision to align itself with the Soviets rather than the US on the
issue of grain embargoes is an example of the Carter administration s poor foresight. Carter over
compartmentalized his foreign policy agenda and

Wizard Of Oz Color Analysis
L. Frank Baum wrote an amazing story using colors to describe each part of Dorothy s journey to Oz.
The color changes throughout the story symbolized setting changes and different stages in her journey.
The colors also represented danger, beauty, power, mood and identified characters and surroundings.
The story begins with the color gray. Dorothy s home, her dog Toto, the farm she lived on with her
Aunt and Uncle, the land and sky are all gray and dull. Once the house had been painted, but the sun
blistered the paint and the rains washed it away, and now the house was as dull and gray as everything
else (Baum, ch.1). Her hardworking relatives were too busy working on the farm to have any fun with
Dorothy. The best part of Dorothy s life is her best friend Toto, who is black and the only thing that isn
t gray in her life. A fast approaching cyclone is about to change Dorothy s life forever.
Dorothy s first experience with color came when her house was thrown by a cyclone into the land ...

streets are made of green marble and emeralds. This fantasy like land is bright, the sky is green and
the sun shines green. The people are wearing green and selling green lemonade. The Palace of Oz is
green and everything in it is green including the carpet, furniture, flowers and books. The throne room
where the great and powerful Oz lives is made of emeralds and green marble too. When Dorothy

of the West. Dorothy and her friends leave the City of Emerald heading west to find the witch they

Is The Great Gatsby Truly Great
Greatness can be defined in many ways. Greatness as something in terms of size , a describing word to
distinguish something as smart, thought out, something better than average. Some may say that Gatsby
in the Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a truly great character meaning better than the average
person. However, there are many reason to say he is not truly great. He has holes in his character like
how he treats Daisy as a trophy or prize , he only uses Nick Carraway to get to Daisy, and he is
immoral. Therefore, Jay Gatsby is not truly great. Jay Gatsby throughout the entire novel tries to get
into a relationship with Daisy. He see s her as a reward for being apart so long thinking they are still
madly in love. Nick tries to understand ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We know as the reader that Gatsby lives in West Egg where the old money is. This is that area that the
older crowd and the not so legal side of making money is from. Some of the rumors about Gatsby and
how he got his money were true. Said by Tom Buchanan He and Wolfsheim bought up a lot of side
street drug stores here and in Chicago and sold grain alcohol over the counter. That s one of his little
stunts. (Fitzgerald 133). Even though he knew it was illegal to sell alcohol he consciously knew he
was doing wrong. Gatsby also used Tom s friend to save himself from jail. This is an immoral act to
do for a person who should have morals. And you left him in the lurch, didn t you? You let him go to
jail for a month over in New Jersey. God! You ought to hear Walter on the subject of you. (Fitzgerald
134). Gatsby didn t care at all about this guy. He willing to put him in jail, while a person with good
morals would feel bad about doing this to an innocent guy. Gatsby also didn t feel bad about killing
Myrtle either. All he cared about was Daisy at that point in time. Was she killed? Yes I thought so; I
told Daisy I thought so. It s better that the shock should all come at once. She stood pretty well He
Spoke as Daisy s reaction was the only thing that mattered. (Fitzgerald 143). Any sane person would
freak out about hit a person with a car let alone killing them without checking. Therefore, Gatsby is

Fear Dentist Essay
Fear is natural but what isn t natural is that people are afraid from improving their health due to
unreliable reasons that are created from their imagination.
People have always been afraid from dentists, and that fear is growing larger every year. The fear
driven by a number of factors that may relate to the person and their association of dentists with pain,
or the fear of the sound of the machines caused by fears originating from childhood memories and
other experiences in life. The fears of past hearings related to the dentists and their actions may be a
reason for fear in the patients. The details of the study below aim at developing the story on the fears

These have created fears in people and led to difficulties on gaining confidence to obtain dental care.
Moreover, the human mind is much related to stimuli and responses based on the causes of the stimuli.
Relating these to the experiment of Pavlov on the dogs and constant stimuli occasioned by the sound
of a bell that indicated a time for food, one discovers the relationship of the thought of a visit to the
dentist to the effect or the pain of it. (Coon, p.261). The conditioning of the mind to fear as a result of
a visit to the dentist would result into a fear. Smell of the hospital accompanied by the sound of the
machines used during the operation yield into fears for a number of patients. The common smell of
drugs in the hospital causes fears in many people that make them fear the whole procedure. A sound
produced by two equipments or machines used raise fear levels in some people.
In dealing with these fears, there is need to coordinate the causes with a professional approach to
handling them based on those identified in each patient. These are part of the professional obligations
of the dentists (Ozar Sokol, p.15). Cause of fear differs from one patient to another, as well as the
solution to it. These majorly deal with the alleviation of the fear. The fear normally grows further if
the patient uses a dentist they may not

  • 2. The Correlation Between Looking Preferences And Reaching... This current study has been formulated on the basis that infants 2 years of age, and even below, have the cognitive capacity to express preference when manipulating objects. Previous research which has been observed shares similar concepts with this current study. This study, conducted by Christopher Newman, Janette Atkinston, and Oliver Braddick (2001) in which the relationship between looking preferences and reaching was explored in infants 5 15 months old infants. To be more specific, they used preferential reaching between objects of different sizes in infants of different ages to explain the dissociation in the development of visual processing and orientation in object manipulation. The infants were presented with cylinders of different sizes, a small, medium, and large cylinder was presented for the infants to interact with. According to Newman, Atkinson and Braddick (2001), The largest object was too large for the younger infants to grasp easily with one hand (p. 563), and this had most likely had a role to play in the preference of the infants. In regards to the results of the study, Newman, Atkinson and Braddick (2001) found Infants of all ages in this experiment reached almost compulsively for objects presented to them. However, although 5 8 /2 month old infants showed no preference when reaching to objects of different sizes, 8 /2 12 month old infants showed a strong preference for smaller objects (p. 568). It is likely, therefore, that this effect ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Why Was George Washington Important George Washington was the most influential figure of his time, he lead our young nation to freedom with little military experience. Most people were drawn to Washington s leadership and overall humbleness, he was a typical southern gentleman who was propper and polished. Although he knew he wanted to be a leader in his nation, he could have never known that roughly two hundred years later, he would still be the most influential figure in the Revolutionary War. So many things throughout his life shaped him into an excellent leader and he wouldn t have been the same without these challenges. As a child Washington liked to do what all young southern boys did, he hunted, fished and played in the stream. Washington s difficult mother, Mary Ball Washington, often complained that her eldest child, George, was ungrateful and neglected his duties to his mother. Washington s father, Augustine Washington, died when young George was eleven. His father s death brought hardship on the family, leaving behind George and his five other brothers and sisters (Badertscher). Due to his father s death, Washington never was able to receive a formal education from England. He did although receive some form of education from a school in ... • 4. The Great Gossip Girl By F. Scott Fitzgerald Abbi Kopf 1.7.16 The Great Gossip Girl A young man desperately battling society, wealth, and rich obnoxious friends in order to win the heart of the perfect girl...is this the story of The Great Gatsby, or the CW s Gossip Girl? Both, actually: the hit TV show mirrors Fitzgerald s most famous work through parallel themes and characters. Cynical subjects such as doomed love and corruption of the upper class play a major part in both works, as well as the story of fight to surmount class and poverty. This story actually played out a couple of times over the course of Gossip Girl s intensely dramatic six seasons, but most notably between Dan Humphrey and Serena Van Der Woodsen. Dan Humphrey was the James Gatz of Gossip Girl, still struggling to become Jay Gatsby. He had a nice life with his father and sister in Brooklyn, but always dreamed about something greater. When Nick finally told the reader Gatsby s true origin story, he said, he invented just the sort of Jay Gatsby that a seventeen year old boy would be likely to invent, and to this conception he was faithful to the end (p.104). Dan and Gatsby both had an idealized, or Platonic, view of themselves and the way their lives would turn out, and they would stop at nothing to get it. Dan created and used Gossip Girl as a way to get into Serena s world just Gatsby used Nick to get Daisy back. Both men saw their dream girl as all the money and glamour and fame that they wanted distilled into one person, a person whose voice ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Guns, Germs, And Steel Guns, Germs, and Steel In his work, Guns, Germs, and Steel (W. W. Norton, New York, NY, 1997) Jared Diamond attempts to explain why human history has carried out the way it has, he often refers to accounts from history to support his argument. Accounts that will be deemed adequate will discuss specific groups of people, at a specified period of time. Diamond suggests that guns, germs, and steel are three contributing factors for why the world is in its current state. It is not difficult to recognize while reading, that the book spends a large amount of time talking about germs and much less text discussing guns and steel. In Guns, Germs, and Steel Diamond does adequately account for the historical development of guns and steel, in the way he accounts for the role of germs in the history of human societies. It is no debate that germs played a massive role in many important events in history, but guns came late, were not very effective at first, and steel production was most important militarily. Diamond goes into incredible detail, especially in his chapter The Lethal Gift of Livestock of his proposed history of germs in relation to humans. He considers the difference in domesticated animals in the old world and new world, attributes their power to the downfall of the Incan and Aztec empires when he writes, ...the most advanced native societies of North America...their destruction was accomplished largely by germs alone. • 10. Argumentative Essay Smoking The numbers of people who smoke have increased over the years. Although they are equipped with the knowledge of how unhealthy smoking can be, people still choose to smoke. It is a personal choice and a highly addictive habit. Smokers choose to subject themselves to the health risks of smoking. It is not for the government or any third party to dictate whether or not a person should be allowed to smoke. However, smoking does not only affect the smoker negatively. It also affects all the people around those who smoke because when people smoke in public the smoke travels everywhere through the air, and the negative effects of the smoke affects all living, breathing creatures. Therefore smoking should be banned in all public places. People who smoke in public portray a bad example. Children are easily influenced in their growing stages. They imitate the people around them because they cannot differentiate between right and wrong. Therefore they perceive the actions they see around them as the way thing should be. Besides that, teenagers who see people smoke in public take it as precedent to start smoking as well. There is a saying that goes monkey see monkey do , which tells us that people imitate the actions of others as they see it in their daily lives. With such devotion of time resources and the his tells us, from an evolutionary standpoint, that sleep is an important part of the success of an animal. But what fitness does sleep confer to an organism? Although sleep occurs across many species of animals, the function of sleep behavior is not fully understood. Recent work in the field suggests slow wave sleep may fulfill ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As early as the 1950s, scientists have parsed the main stages of sleep. In one such study, eye movements, recorded by electrooculograms (EOG) correlated with the brain activity in electroencephalograms(EEGs) as well as respiratory rate, indicating the existence of distinct sleep states which were not randomly generated (Aserinsky and Klietman, 1953). The discovery of distinct states showed sleep was not just a passive behavior. Instead, it consists of three to four distinct states as well as REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, each with their own unique brain activity. While REM sleep has been in the scientific spotlight since its discovery for its role in consolidation of emotional memory (Sara, 2017), recently more studies have begun to focus on the role of slow wave sleep. Slow wave sleep (SWS) encompasses the stage 3 4 subset of non REM sleep and is characterized by delta waves that consist of slow oscillations of activity. This type of sleep occurs primarily at the onset of sleep and time spent in SWS declines in humans as aging occurs. SWS seems to be most important in the consolidation phase, though the mechanisms of this consolidation are still being explored in the scientific community. However, the method of this memory consolidation is currently a subject of hot debate. What caused scientists to link memory and sleep, particularly SWS? In 2015 During the same time frame Chennai received 1609 milometers and 1815 milometers (Rela et al, 2016, p.2). Although 2015 s numbers were much larger the major issue is those numbers occurred in only a 4 5 day period compared to almost three months. The first rainfall which was November 15th caused some light flooding in areas that were low. Rivers, lakes, and marshlands raised from the first rainfall and did not have time to go back down to their regular levels. • 20. Analysis Of Steven Brill s Are We Any Safer In Steven Brill s Are We Any Safer, an article which appeared in the September 2016 issue of The Atlantic, the rhetor attempts to educate the audience on the issue of post 9/11 security, and weather or not it has improved safety or not. The author makes his rhetorical response effective by using ethos, pathos, and logos to appeal to the audience. Ethos is the credibility of the rhetor, an essential part to any rhetorical response. No audience would waste their time listening to an unclarified rhetore. Pathos is emotional appeal, this can be used to influence the audience s opinion, or to gain solid audience engagement. Logos is the logical appeal of the response. Does the piece make sense to the audience? If logos is lacking the rhetor has failed. In Steven Brill s article, he expertly balances resources and constraints, while using ethos, pathos, and logos to write a fitting response to the exigence of post 9/11 security efforts. In Steven Brill s Are We Any Safer, the exigence of the response is whether or not post 9/11 security precautions have been effective or not. Brill makes this clear by comparing and contrasting security pre and post 9/11. Brill says that on september 11th there were 16,000 poorly trained... private screeners (62). • 21. Essay on Names in The Odyssey and The Bible Importance of Names in The Odyssey and The Bible Two of the most widely studied ancient works are Homer s Odyssey and the book of Genesis from the Bible. Each of these texts provides a unique viewpoint of an early civilization. In both of the texts, one can learn not only stories about great heroes, but also about the way that these peoples lived and what they believed. Many interesting parallels can be drawn between the two developing societies shown in the Odyssey and the book of Genesis. One parallel is the importance placed on names by each culture. Although viewed as important in different ways, the value placed on a name shows a striking similarity between the evolving cultures of both the Greeks and the Hebrews. ... A name symbolized not only one s own fame and honor, but also that of one s ancestry. If a man s family was particularly honorable or dishonorable, it was instantly obvious because of the renown and history that stood behind his name. The name was truly the most important possession of any man in early Grecian culture. This is probably best evidenced by Odysseus encounter with the cyclops, Polyphemos. In the beginning, Odysseus merely tells Polyphemos that he is Noman, a man with no history or background, about whom the cyclops does not know if he should fear or welcome, a man whom he could never find again. After he has injured Polyphemos and is away from him, however, Odysseus tells his name, saying, ...your blinder was Odysseus, the conqueror of Troy, the son of Laërtês, whose address is in Ithaca! It seems that Odysseus cannot stand the thought of this great victory not being added to the history of his name, and, although it gets him in lots of trouble, thinks it much worse to do a great deed unknown than to suffer the consequences of having it known. This example clearly summarizes the higher and deeper purpose of a name in ancient Grecian culture, to be a witness for the man himself and his character. Musical Theater is a worldwide form of entertainment that has been around since ancient times and exhibits emotion through a series of acts which include singing, dancing and scripted acting. Different areas of the world follow unique storylines which are relevant to their past and current events. There are many similarities between the alternate ending and the original ending, but there are also many differences that can be noted. Lord of the Flies is a complex novel with a complex ending that can be analyzed to find the deeper meaning. The original ending to Lord of the Flies had Ralph running from the hunters, just to eventually find himself on the beach with a naval officer waiting to take the boys back to civilization. He had run from the hunters for fear of the stick sharpened on both ends as was stated by Samneric on page 273. Ralph clung to civilization throughout the entire book and even at the end without the conch or Piggy, he remained civilized and avoided becoming savage like Jack and the hunters. The alternate ending was not the same outcome for Ralph. Ralph had descended to savagery and lost sight of civilization and rescue. She went to the front desk at the library, and asked for the two reserved textbooks. The person behind the desk, informed Traci, that students are allowed to check out one book at a time. Fair enough she thought, and she checked out a text book, found an empty table, sat down, and opened up the chapter that she wanted to read. Guess what? Gattegno And The Silent Way Caleb Gattegno (1911 1988), one of the most prominent and productive educators of the twentieth century, is best known for his innovative approaches to teaching and learning foreign languages (The Silent Way). In 1972, Caleb Gattegno introduced The Silent Way, that is, a language teaching method whose basic concept is that the teacher should remain silent much of the time, thus its name while the students speak as much as possible. In the same way, Gattegno was under the impression that the teacher should focus on the way students learn more often rather than how to teach. In fact, he expressed support for language learning by problem solving, creative, discovering activity and all that, which is directly opposed to drills such as seen in audiolingualism. He, on the other hand, contends that students could naturally earn a new language like a child, through perception, awareness, creativity, and other mental processes. Besides being critical of linguistic theory, he devoted his thinking to a pedagogical perspective called the subordination of teaching to learning in that learners demands are placed at the center of teaching, so teaching is subordinate or dependent to learning. Gattegno holds that understanding the spirit of a language that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is the story of Janie s Pursuit for love where she, a widowed woman, unfolds her story to her friend Pheoby at dinner. She talks about her childhood with Nanny and The Washburns, her relationships with Logan Killicks and Joe Starks or Jody, her experiences with them along with events that took place while being with them or in relation to them, how they affected her mentality, and how she grows up and matures throughout her life to the self reliant woman telling the story. • 43. My Writing That I Did Not Know Before Over the course of this class I have learned many things about writing that I did not know before, because I never had any great instruction before i came to college. In Grade school and high school, when I got back a graded paper there would just be words crossed out, or punctuation corrections. There would never be any explanation as to why I need to correct this, or why this is wrong. I would go over the corrections and wonder how this is wrong and why does a comma go there but why doesn t a comma go here. When reading the corrections and notes you made on each of my papers this year, I more easily understood why something was wrong. I might not have made the same corrections in the next paper, but each paper I got back I understood what was wrong, and what I needed to do to correct it. I think I understood more about writing with each paper that I wrote this year. I might not have shown it with each paper because I seem to always make the same errors. I always get mixed up when using singular and plural nouns, using the same adjective throughout the paper, and not being descriptive. I knew after you made the corrections why something is wrong, but I never seemed to make the corrections myself, because I have a habit of making those same mistakes, and because it sounds like it is right to me because I speak that way myself. Those errors I made in each of my papers seemed to be right at the time of me writing them, but when you pointed them out to me after giving back ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 45. Koyaanisqatsi Life Out Of Balance Analysis In the 1982 film by Godfrey Reggio, Ron Fricke and Philip Glass, Koyaanisqatsi: Life out of Balance, the filmmakers use imagery and music rather than dialogue to convey emotion, time and meaning. The images in the film is primarily time lapse and slow motion footage of natural landscapes in the United States, cities and human machinery/development. It requires skill and experience to create a film with no dialogue that can effectively convey a message. Without words it would also be challenging creating climax and convey time. The filmmakers of Koyaanisqatsi creatively used contrast in images to display time passing and to build or lesson the drama to transition to the next scene. In photography and filmmaking contrast refers to the difference in tones from the lightest tone to the darkest tone. Throughout the film there are many aerial shots of canyons especially in chapter two, Organic. The first canyon image in the movie is an aerial shot of what looks like the Grand Canyon. There is uneven rock formation rows in front of each other. The sunlight is coming from behind the camera, creating deep shadows on the front of the first valley and it creates deep shadows on the valley behind it. This shot moves very slowly across this area and then cuts to several close up shots of parts of the canyon, these images are low contrast they are mostly orange without distinct harsh shadows. After the closeups, there are more aerial shots of the canyon. With each shot the valleys get shallower and the contrast lowers. The shadows are less distinct as the land flattens, the land also has more and greener as it gets flatter, one of the last canyon shot we see before the transition to the next chapter shows the sun rising over completely flat desert like land in the area. For this chapter the filmmakers used regression of contrast to create transition from one scene to the next. The flattening in land with the lowering in contrast also shows time and how what used to be vibrant, with harsh and distinct lines and shadows can fade and erode into flat land with no depth and no contrast. The next chapter is named clouds, they use water to transition from dry harsh land to the flowing clouds in the sky. The film shows rushing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 48. An Examination Of President Jimmy Carter s Human Rights... Paige Cooper Carter was Absolute on Human Rights? An Examination of President Jimmy Carter s Human Rights Policy in Argentina Introduction: President Jimmy Carter declared in his inaugural address that the US s commitment towards human rights must be absolute . Human rights under Carter were anything but absolute. Under his presidency, the US sent contradictory messages: one opposing human rights violations and another which seemed to overlook human rights abuses. The issue of human rights was not Carter s only priority. In reality, human rights ended up being one of many of the Carter administration priorities. All of these foci collided, and left Carter with no real center to his foreign policy. One of Carter s first attempts to implement his human rights initiatives was in Argentina. The authoritarian, rightist Juntas organized a violent repression against political dissidents. Trying to distance himself from the policies of Ford/Kissinger, Carter attempted to pressure the authoritarian regime to improve their human rights record via reductions in military aid and economic sanctions. These maneuvers led to some mild improvements initially, but ultimately came back to hurt the Carter administration after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Argentina s decision to align itself with the Soviets rather than the US on the issue of grain embargoes is an example of the Carter administration s poor foresight. Carter over compartmentalized his foreign policy agenda and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
