The food we eat contains important nutrients like carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals and roughage. Deficiencies in these nutrients can lead to diseases.

However, growing problems with world food supplies exist due to increasing population, wealth, and environmental degradation combined with insufficient growth in irrigation and fertilizer.
