CTLGH and ILRI online forum on cattle genomics in Africa

This document announces a stakeholder engagement forum on cattle genomics in Africa from August 16-26, 2016. The forum, organized by the Dairy Genomics program at the Centre for Tropical Livestock Genetics and Health, will discuss current and potential future applications of genetics and genomics to improve cattle and provide more animal protein to smallholder farmers and consumers in Africa. Participants will also discuss priorities for creating a public genomic database of African cattle breeds. The online forum will include facilitated discussions and a survey to gather stakeholder insights and priorities on these issues.

This stakeholder engagement is being organized by the Dairy Genomics program of the Centre for Tropical Livestock
Genetics and Health. The Centre supports programs directed towards improving livestock productivity for the benefit of
smallholder farmers in tropical climates. It is a strategic alliance of the International Livestock Research Institute,
Roslin Institute at the University of Edinburgh, and Scotland’s Rural College ctlgh.org
In this forum we will discuss:
Current and future applications of
genetics / genomics to cattle in Africa – in
particular, which applications are likely to make a
difference to poor livestock keepers and animal
source food consumers, and what capacities and
resources are required to achieve this.
The potential to create a genomic
information resource on African cattle – a
publically-available set of sequence information
on cattle breeds in Africa, and critically which
breeds to prioritize for this.

The forum will be web-based (online), and open from
16 to 26 August 2016
It will comprise facilitated discussions and a survey. You can
register in advance or just participate during the forum.

This project aims to improve dairy productivity in Ethiopia and Tanzania through genetic gains and farmer support services. It will establish performance recording centers to select superior dairy cows and bulls. These will be used in artificial insemination and natural mating programs to demonstrate genetic improvement. The project also aims to provide farmer information and management support services to 59,000 farmers, and potentially one million farmers. It involves partnerships between ILRI, universities, and companies to deliver these services sustainably and scale them up through private sector involvement over time.

African trypanosomiasis resistance in cattle by a transgenic approach

ILRI

We propose a new strategy for creating resistance in cattle to African trypanosomiasis, a major disease that affects agricultural production in broad regions of Africa. The long-term aim is to generate genetically modified cattle, which carry a gene that imparts resistance to African trypanosomes. The gene, APOL1, encodes the key trypanolytic component of Baboon’s protective Trypanosome Lytic Factor (TLF) against both cattle and human-infective trypanosomes. TLFs are only found in humans, gorillas, sooty mangabys, mandrills and baboons and govern resistance to different African trypanosome species.

Cattle keeping and dairy farming are important livelihood activities for rural communities in Senegal. The study found large differences in profits depending on the breed or cross-breed of cattle and livestock management practices. Households keeping crosses of indigenous Zebu cattle with introduced Bos Taurus breeds under good management conditions achieved the highest profits, largely due to higher milk yields. Improving cattle breeds and management can enhance rural livelihoods, food security, and dairy industry policies in Senegal.

Small ruminant value chain development in Atsbi, Ethiopia

This document outlines challenges and proposed solutions for the small ruminant value chain in Atsbi, Ethiopia. Key challenges include limited access to livestock feed due to farm and grazing land scarcity, infectious diseases affecting sheep, and poor veterinary services. Proposed solutions focus on sustainable feed strategies, improving veterinary services, community breeding programs, market information access, collective action, market facilities, and capacity building for producers and extension agents. The vision is to create a sustainable, market-oriented sheep production system that improves nutrition and incomes by 2020.

The study identified and evaluated the productivity of different cattle breeds under varying management levels on 220 households over 2 years. This project aims to increase productivity and profitability of smallholder pig farming in Uganda through appropriate pig genetics. It will evaluate productivity of household pig production systems and assign breeds through genomic analysis. A genetic improvement strategy will be designed with stakeholders. A registration scheme for suppliers of pigs of known breed will be developed and tested. Capacity building workshops for pig keepers and other stakeholders will be conducted. The goal is to provide evidence and tools to support selection of optimal pig breeds for Ugandan smallholder systems.

Tropical Legumes III

The cowpea breeding program at INERA in Burkina Faso aims to improve cowpea varieties through farmer-preferred traits like resistance to pests and diseases. The program was established in 1978 in collaboration with IITA and has released over 30 varieties. However, the program is limited by having only one permanent cowpea breeder and needs additional infrastructure, staff, and training. Plans to strengthen the program include collaborating more with international partners, reducing variety release timelines, improving database management, and upgrading facilities.

1) The Tropical Poultry Genetic Solutions (TPGS) project aims to characterize local chicken ecotypes, develop improved breeding approaches in partnership with other organizations, and test dissemination mechanisms to deliver more productive and adapted poultry breeds to smallholders. 2) TPGS is currently testing chicken lines and crosses from various breeds on farms in Ghana, Kenya, and Zimbabwe, and measuring differences in body weight compared to local chickens. 3) Ongoing indigenous chicken breeding programs in Kenya, Ethiopia, and Tanzania are employing BLUP to select for increased body weight, egg number, and survival using local ecotypes identified as priorities in each country.

Sustainable breeding strategies for the Red Maasai sheep

The productivity of developing country livestock production systems lags well behind that of the developed world. Addressing this issue is one important route to poverty alleviation, improved food security and environmental sustainability (because, generally, the lower the productivity of livestock systems the higher the environmental impact per unit of product). Low productivity can be attributed to a number of inter-related factors including (depending on the system) high disease burdens and weak animal health-care systems, poor quality and insufficient animal feed, use of breed-types that are not optimal, and other social and economic constraints. This poster shows how the rapidly developing field of genomics can contribute to improved productivity in developing country livestock production systems.

Infectious bursal disease in Ethiopian village chickens

1. The study examines infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) in village chickens in 8 villages across 2 regions in Ethiopia. Blood samples were collected from 1,280 chickens and tested for IBDV antibodies. 2. 44 chickens tested positive for IBDV antibodies. Recent mortality in growers but not chicks or adults was associated with IBDV seropositivity, consistent with IBDV disease biology. 3. IBDV appears to be circulating in 7 of the 8 villages studied. The study highlights the need for localized control strategies that consider regional socioeconomic differences in poultry keeping.

The smallholder livestock sector in Botswana faces a challenge in exploiting the growing national and regional demand for meat, as well as preferential access to the EU market. The incentives for value addition in pursuit of these markets appear to be limited. There is also limited evidence of innovation in the value chain, particularly for small stock. - The study examines profit efficiency among smallholder beef producers in Botswana using farm-level survey data from three districts. - Stochastic frontier analysis is used to estimate profit frontiers and measure technical inefficiency, finding average efficiency levels of 0.58, 0.56, 0.62 and 0.68 for the whole sample and different herd size groups. - Key determinants of inefficiency include education level, distance to market, herd size, access to information, and income from crop production, indicating opportunities to improve profitability through policy and practice changes.

N2Africa is a large-scale project launched in Ethiopia in 2014 that aims to promote the use of legumes for food, feed, and seed through public-private partnerships. The project works with four legumes across four regions and 30 districts of Ethiopia. It has established seven public-private partnerships along the legume value chain in areas like seed production, marketing, and animal feed to benefit smallholder farmers. One example is a partnership in Pawe district to supply soybean to farmers as animal feed through contracts between a union and research institutions. The goals are to disseminate proven legume technologies, strengthen input supply chains, build capacity, and improve access to markets and information to boost legume production and food

Women in northern Kenya play an important role in livestock value chains but face barriers to full participation and empowerment. A study with 660 participants in Marsabit and Isiolo examined how empowering women through livestock interventions could improve maternal and child nutrition. The study found that women's time-consuming responsibilities negatively impact nutrition and market access. While women control income from livestock products, men predominantly control income from live animal sales. Increasing women's engagement in production and sale of livestock products may help improve feeding practices and nutritional status.
