Similarities Between The United States And The Federal System
The United States Federal System and the current Federal System for the European Union have many
similarities and differences. The traditional division of the functions of a federal government are the
legislative, executive and the judicial branch. The United States is made up all three branches
separately to check potential abuses and balance each of the branches. The European Union also has
three main political institutions that constitute the executive and legislative branches, as well as the
independent judiciary with the power to exercise judicial review (European Parliament).
The legislative Branch for the United States is divided into two parts: House of Representatives and
the Senate. The House is made up of 435 elected members, which is divided among the 50 states in
amount to their total population. The Speaker of the House, who is the third in the line of succession
to the Presidency, is elected by the Representatives. The members of the House are elected every two
years and must 25 years of age and been a U.S. citizen for at least 7 ... Show more content on

There are only a few differences between the House and the Parliament such as the House has the
right to introduce new legislation while the Parliament has no right to initiate legislation but co
determines EU legislative planning (European Parliament). For the Senate and the Council of the
European Union, it is also the exact same thing as the House and the Parliament. The only differences
between the Senate and the Council are: there are two senators from each Senators from each State in
the Senate while there is one representative from each Member State government and one vote per
Senate member while the member state population of the Council determines how many votes each
member State has (European

Television In The 1980 s
Revolutionized TV s: In the movie back to the future 2 they demonstrated a fascinating idea of the
innovation of the television. While the Televisions had the same exterior as the TV s in the 1980 s,
they had an thought provoking feature in them, and this was because they were portable and had voice
recognition to be able to respond to the customer with a greater efficiency. Even though the TV was
primarily used for taking Marty s commands, the fact that it was moveable was quite bewildering to
me as a spectator. The TV s in the movie had the identical appearance as the former boxed television s
that were used in the 1980 s and had the equivalent tuning knobs built in to the bottom of the TV.
Airborne Cars: The concept of transport that was presented in the movie was of flying cars which I
thought was quite an unoriginal idea to most modernized movies. The flying cars seen were typically
like jet aircrafts and supercars that exist today. The cars were capable of transporting people as any
normal vehicle would but were portrayed to be competent to fly at extraordinary speeds. The distinct
features of the flying cars were that they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The fact that a 3D shark was high tech represents that the portrayal wasn t very outlying from reality.
Nowadays we can go to the theaters and watch movies in 3D.
In my opinion, 2015 will not be a much of a game changer compared to the current year we are in. I
feel that an encroachment in technology isn t regarded to be as elevated as it was in the 1980 s and
other years, principally since there were more basic things that were not thought of and the fact that
there s not much left but to just go forward in those views sort of renders it so that the technology won

Figurative Language In Truman Capote s A Christmas Memory
The short story I read was A Christmas Memory by Truman Capote. The book was mainly about two
characters, Buddy and his friend, and a memorable Christmas that they spent together a couple of
years back before Buddy s friend passed away. Basically the whole story is a memoir, his own
memories and experiences , because Buddy is reminiscing on the past and is speaking upon the
memories that he remembers from that Christmas spent with his friend. Even though it was a short
story, Capote did a well enough job of describing not only the characters, but also their relationship
with literary devices such as figurative language, symbolism, theme, and many more.
My first point will be about the author s major use of figurative language. For example, in A
Christmas Memory Buddy said, She is wearing tennis shoes and a shapeless gray sweater over a
summery calico dress, (Capote 12) which depicts imagery since Buddy went into detail and gave a
vivid image of what his friend was wearing that day. Another example within the story was when
Buddy s friend was speaking to Buddy and said I know where we ll find real pretty trees, Buddy. And
Holly, too. With berries as big as your eyes. (Capote 7) Within this quote lies a simile because Buddy s

Macroeconomics for Business Debt Sustainability
BS1780 Macroeconomics for Business Problem Set 3 Group Assignment February 2016
1)
Assuming that the nominal interest rate, the inflation rate, the real GDP growth and primary deficit
remain constant for the next year, we can compute the projected next year end debt as a percentage of
GDP by using the equation: dt+1=dt+i πdt grdt st+1 In this case, dt is the public debt (as % of GDP) of
2011, which is 88%; i is the government interest rate 7% according to our assumption; π is the
inflation rate, which was 2% if it is held constant constant in the next year; gr is 1%, the real GDP
growth; and st+1 is the primary deficit, which is 3%. Therefore: dt+1=88%+7% 2%×88%

Most of this change is due to the decrease in primary deficit and interest rate. Real interest rate
component of the debt ratio change dropped from 4.4% to 0.44% and the primary deficit component
fell from 3% to 0%. However, when examine the years after the loan, we found that the debt ratio
starts to rise gradually. It s notable that the increase is marginal compared to when there is no IMF
loan. In this sense, the IMF loan has a prompt effect on mitigating Cyprus debt trouble, but the effect
will not last long. To deal the root of the problem, Cyprus needs to work on its real economy.
The table above gives what we believe is an unrealistic forecast of what would in fact happen to the
Cypriot economy and the debt to GDP

Futurism and advertising in the 1960s space age
Futurism was an artistic and social movement originating from 20th century Italy. The movement
ultimately rejected anything that looked to the past for identity. Instead, it glorified speed, technology,
youth, and the idea of anything industrial and mass produced. As the founders of the movement would
have it, the movement explored different mediums of art and design, ultimately overarching each
other, and finding its way into many aspects of daily life; including and not limited to conventional
mediums such as painting, sculpture architecture, film, music, poetry, and photography; just to name a
few. With its dynamic and innovative aesthetic qualities, it is still being appreciated and used in
conceptual ways by a handful of present day designers and art directors as seen in Image 1 (MCM ...

The Spaniards believed that their interactions with indigenous people was one that accurately reflected
the love of Christ. Using the information gained from section four and additional sources, do you
believe the previous statement to be true? Be sure to write about the colonial social structure, the
colonial economic system, and the colonial state and church. Also, include bible verses to support
your argument. Be sure to include two additional sources to support your claim. Honors please have

WH 10 Ch. 17 Essay In the sixteenth century, both Spain and Portugal established enormous colonial
empires around the world. Spain ruled most of South America and parts of Central America and North
America. Portugal primarily ruled the country of Brazil. These lands of Central and South America
became known as Latin America. The Spaniards and Portuguese rulers, in my opinion, did not reflect
the love of Christ through their interactions with the indigenous people. The colonial social structure,
colonial economic system and the colonial state and church implemented by the new rulers as well as
their interactions with the indigenous people will support my opinion. With the establishment of
colonial Latin America, the rulers decided to create a colonial social structure that divided people into
social classes based on status. The three primary social classes included the peninsulares, creoles, and
the multi racial groups of indigenous people.

Emily Dickinson s A Narrow Fellow In The Grass
The poem A narrow Fellow in the Grass by Emily Dickinson is a complex poem due to the unyielding
personification, dynamic similes, and powerful symbolism. Right from the beginning the
personification is strong in the poem. She refers to the snake as A narrow Fellow (Line 1). Comparing
the snake to an actual man is showing personification for the snake. Dickinson also says that the snake

Comparison Of Classical Hollywood Cinema And Neorealist...
Film and realism are connected to one another; it gives the audience an opportunity to interpret the
film in their own perspective, in relation to the real world. As someone with a firm opposition to
editing and montage, Bazin stated that the mise en scène truly represents true continuity in film,
reproducing the real world more realistically. (Cardullo, 7) There are two editing systems: Classical
Hollywood Cinema and Neorealist Cinema. From their similarities and differences, it can be said that
Neorealist Cinema portrays the real world more realistically and effectively than CHC... In order to
produce Bazin s true continuity and reproduce situations more realistically, the filmmaker must choose
an effective editing system, refrain from interrupting the flow of images, and use minimal editing,
proven through the two films Bicycle Thieves (Neorealist Cinema) and Stagecoach (CHC). According
to Bazin s theory on realism, there are different forms of realism using different techniques and
technologies depending on the period. Editing systems such as Neorealist Cinema focused relatively
on the poor working conditions and the underclass, using minimal editing and manipulation to the
film. While, Classical Hollywood ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

method was used as a way to conform to the flow of the viewer s attention (Cardullo, 7)1. Thus, the
manipulation of the film in accordance to the audience can become a discontinuous approach to reality

Human Intelligence Operations Targeted Against Hamas Essay
For hundreds of years human intelligence operations have been conducted. Nation states have always
had a desire and a need to know what friendly and unfriendly countries are doing. For national
security purposes knowledge is power. Human intelligence collection has changed throughout history
and is different depending on who is conducting it. International laws, brokered agreements, internal
laws and policies dictate how human intelligence is collected. By looking at a known adversary, one
can apply a human intelligence mission in order to defeat or negate the enemies actions. No region is
more suitable for human intelligence missions than Israel and the occupied territories of Palestine.

From the beginning, Muslims have always been unhappy with the presence of Israel in Muslim land ,
specifically Palestine. This conflict is the main reason why Hamas was created and why they are so
popular in the Middle East. Hamas officially published its charter or The Covenant of the Islamic
Resistance Movement on August 18, 1988. Hamas is a Palestinian nationalistic and Islamic
fundamentalist organization. The charter spells out the organizations objectives, goals, and end state
and has been unchanged to this day. The charter calls upon Islamic jihad in order to take back the land
of Palestine that was stolen by Israel. The charter also states the goals of establishing an Islamic
Palestinian state in the West Bank and The Gaza Strip, the total destruction of Israel, the return of all
Palestinian refugees back to Israel and East Jerusalem, and East Jerusalem be recognized as the
Palestinian capital. When Hamas published its charter, it created a rift between the Muslim

A Report From Unesco Of A Good Education For Girls Essay
Dr. Martin Luther King once said no one is free until we are all free . This idea sounds very simple,
but it lays a profound message to many different events and issues that are happening around us,
including many big challenges to the world such as racial and ethnic discrimination. However, there is
a sub issue to those challenges that we rarely think of it as a discrimination girls education. By
investing in a good education for girls all over the world teaching them how to empower themselves,
we are contributing to eliminate discrimination and empower the world.
A report from UNESCO in October 2013 shows some shocking statistics about girls and women
around the world. There are 1.8 billion young people in the world. Approximately half of them 900
million are adolescent girls and young women, but 62 millions girls worldwide are not in school. As a
result, they lack the basic skills for work: Two thirds of the 774 million illiterate people in the world
are female. This will have some lifelong effects. Girls will face limited opportunities and choices in
the job market. They lack basic health knowledge and will be subjected to serious health risks, and
threatened by violence. They don t know about their basic rights, so their views and concerns are often
unheard. These three effects are enough to prove that girls are discriminated against as females
Therefore, if education is the key to their future, what doors can it open for those girls? They will be
less likely

Essay about Development of the Colorado River
Prior to settlement of the western United States, the Colorado River roamed free. Starting from cool
mountain streams, the river eventually became a thunderous, silty force of nature as it entered the
canyons along its path. The river nourished wetlands and other riparian habitats from the headwaters
in the Rocky Mountains to the delta at the Sea of Cortez in Northwest Mexico. Settlers along the river
harnessed these waters mainly for agriculture via irrigation canals, but flooding from spring runoff
wreaked havoc on agricultural land, prevented development in the floodplain and full utilization of the
water, a waste in the eyes of western farmers. In order to meet current and future water demands in the
west, the Federal Government ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With human development, industrial pollution and other factors all contribute to the deteriorated
condition of the river, which makes it difficult to determine the dams environmental impact in
isolation. CITE That said, the current operations of the dam hamper and potentially prevent
environmental improvement of the Colorado. In order to preserve some semblance of the Colorado
ecosystem, man must restore the natural processes that created the ecosystem. The real question is
how to do that, whether via dam decommission or a less extreme policy change.
Even though the dams provide immense water storage at a cost of the Colorado River ecosystem, the
thirst of the southwest continues to increase. Conservation will help to slow the thirst, but the ever
increasing demanded requires more water in the system. The three fastest growing US states (Nevada,
Arizona and Utah) are located within the Colorado River basin and all seven states within the basin
outpace the national average. Four of the ten fastest growing metro areas: St. George and Provo in
Utah, Las Vegas in Nevada and Greenly in Colorado. Unfortunately for this growth, the demand far
exceeds the available supply. The Bureau of Reclamation completed the last major dam (Glen
Canyon) in 1966. The Bureau built several smaller dams, along with Glen Canyon, under the auspices
of the Colorado River Storage Project

Disruptive Behavior Examples
Disruptive behavior
The Ontario College of Physicians and surgeons defined the disruptive behavior as inappropriate
conduct, whether in words or action, that interferes with, or has the potential to interfere with, quality
health care delivery. Disruptive doctors, nurses and most of healthcare employees are found in almost
all hospitals and clinics. Although most observers noticed that only 6% of physicians fall into this
category, the influence of this small percent far outweighs their percentage. Examples of disruptive
behavior are various and includes, shouting, verbal threat, angry outbursts ,throwing objects, breaking

The factors are either endogenous related to the individual or exogenous related to the work
environment. Certain personalities are associated with disrespectful behavior. Self esteem is extremely
important to doctors as it is very related to doctors` perception of their own reputation and
competence. The reason for this is doctors usually spend a huge amount of time and energy to achieve
a great success and reputation so they become more sensitive to anything that may endanger their self
esteem or success. Doctors might react with aggressive personal behavior, if anyone directly or
indirectly tries to touch their self esteem, as a way to confirm their professional dominance. They
could feel insecurity and anxiety especially if they felt that they are prone to challenges of practicing
medicine. Doctors or any healthcare professionals who do not feel confident about their skills may
reflect this anxiety to the coworkers around him in terms of blaming others or making hypercritical
comments. In fact they might overreact blaming themselves for real or unreal inadequacy,
hypercriticize themselves or others. The huge amount of energy and time doctors spend to succeed
professionally make physicians self involved and become vulnerable to narcissistic character traits. In
fact medical narcissism is term used to reflect feeling of being superior and perfectionism are usually
found in healthcare professionals. They believes that their ideas are special. Due to the acceptance of

Purpose Of Life In The Mayor Of Casterbridge By Thomas Hardy
The purpose of life is trailed by a string of theories, molded by the minds of individuals and decorated
with their personal opinions. Some may say that the purpose of life is success. Those who fancy this
ideology spend every given minute doing the absolute most they can do in order to feed this new
found obsession of success. Now, those same people may say that once they have obtained success,
their determination to maintain a dedicated reputation is no longer necessary. Their hard work has
finally paid off or so they thought. These people who believe this, are wrong. Success is the product of
never ending diligence and persistence. These success stories happen when an individual continues to
work hard, even when they have reached their peaks. It is the act of maintaining respect in a position,
and understanding that confidence is a preferred descriptor to arrogance. Because in the end, success
is knowing that the second someone feels secure in a position, inevitable change has the power to strip
that happiness away from them. This very concept can be learned by Thomas Hardy in his novel The
Mayor of Casterbridge. Through Henchard s character, the weather, and the transient nature of power
and status, people should never be too comfortable in a position or situation because nothing is
permanent, except change.
Hardy uses Michael Henchard as a vehicle to illuminate that sudden change can affect positioning in
relationships causing abandonment when efforts to maintain these

Livy’s The Rise of Rome Essays
Livy s The Rise of Rome
Livy s The Rise of Rome serves as the ultimate catalogue of Roman history, elaborating on the
accomplishments of each king and set of consuls through the ages of its vast empire. In the first five
books, Livy lays the groundwork for the history of Rome and sets forth a model for all of Rome to
follow. For him, the special and salutary benefit of the study of history is to behold evidence of every
sort of behaviour set forth as on a splendid memorial; from it you may select for yourself and for your
country what to emulate, from it what to avoid, whether basely begun or basely concluded. (Livy 4).

Livy s description of Romulus as a man with exemplary strength and military prowess helps solidify
his position as a truly great Roman.
The attributes relating to Tarquin Superbus s effectiveness as a leader hardly stray off the path set forth
by Romulus. Tarquin was not an ineffective leader in war; in the military sphere he would have been
deemed equal to the earlier kings... (Livy 61). Once again, we see the necessity for Roman kings to be
skilled in the art of war, leading massive armies to victory for the benefit of the empire. In addition to
his prowess on the battlefield, Tarquin demonstrated an overwhelming sense of ambition, a feature
that brings with it the desire for power and greatness, the very same desire that characterized Rome as
a city. Just as Romulus fought for power against his brother Remus, so too did Tarquin fight for his
right to power against Servius. Tarquin s acquisition of the throne came through brute force, as
overwhelming numbers and his own physical strength helped to literally cast Servius from the steps of
power. Tarquin s characteristics mirrored many of the other kings both before and after him, and so it
is easy to find justification for his position as a king of Rome.
Livy s portrayal of Tarquin s rule, however, strays a great deal from the characterization of Tarquin as
worthy of holding such a powerful position. Livy s narrative effectively strips the reader of the ability

The Creative Curriculum Program Is An Effective Learning...
The Creative Curriculum program is an effective learning style that assists preschool children ranging
from ages 3 to 5 years old. Founded by a former preschool teacher, Diane Trister Dodge, this early
childhood education program with a comprehensive curriculum is structured to be directed by the
teacher, but initiated by the children. The philosophy of the Creative Curriculum is to allow the
children to learn at their best efforts in an environment that is safe and open for exploration. Child
centers that use this curriculum allow the children to develop and learn through planned programming,
select materials, and guided learning. The goal is to enhance their physical, cognitive, language,
social, and emotional development through hands on learning activities. The sole principle of the
curriculum program is to identify the learning styles of the children, and strengthen them through
learning activities that spark their interests. This is to help the children become enthusiastic learners.
The content areas covered within the Creative Curriculum are: literacy, math, science, social studies,
the arts, and technology. Educators of the curriculum are well qualified and are trained to possess the
ability to provide positive classroom management, build analytical skills and relationship skills. The
role of the teacher is to guide the learning process. With a student to teacher ratio of 7:1,the teachers
are there to observe and evaluate the progress of the children. The

As a first step, the professors organize students into groups of four to five people, balancing the
groups based on both academic major and performance in the class to date (including performance on
homework and the first exam), as well as to achieve diversity. The group format is used to encourage
students to learn from each other, to motivate students to consider alternative viewpoints, to develop
students understanding of group dynamics, and to limit the amount of time required of the project for
both students and the faculty who must grade it. Each professor uses a different approach in selecting
the industry and companies for analysis. One professor takes industry suggestions from the class (with
the restriction that there be sufficient companies so that no more than two groups will have to analyze
the same pair of companies), writes the suggestions on the board, and asks students to vote for their
top two choices. Then, a second vote is taken from among the top two original suggestions, with a
majority vote determining the industry to be analyzed. Finally, groups have one week to send the
professor an email proposing two companies to analyze, with first responders being given preference,
so that no more than two groups analyze the same pair. 85 Misch and Galantine 86 The other

Premarital Sex And Its Effects
In a study conducted in the United States, 61 percent of men and 12 percent of women born prior to
1910 admitted to having premarital sex; the gender disparity may have been caused by cultural double
standards regarding the admission of sexual activity. Starting in the 1920s, and especially after World
War II, premarital sex became more common; this was especially prevalent among women. By the end
of the 20th century, between 75 and 80 percent of Americans had sex before the age of 19. During the
colonial period, premarital sex was publicly frowned upon but privately condoned to an extent. Even
though premarital sex was somewhat condoned, having a child outside of wedlock was not. If a
pregnancy resulted from premarital sex, the young couple were expected to marry. Beginning in the
1950s, as premarital sex became more common, the stigma attached to it lessened for many people.
Love began to become enough for a reason to practice sex, instead of marriage or engagement in the
eyes of many. The percentage of ever married men and women who had premarital sex (20 44 years
old) between 2006 and 2010 is 90.6% men and 86% women (www.cdc.gov). A new study of 38.000

committed. Kent conveys the historical genre through the novel and utilises setting in order to engage
readers by including modes of communication, transport and the way of life in the 1800 s that are not
commonly used anymore. Throughout the novel, Kent optimises dialogue through the use of old terms
and utilising old court documents which place readers in the 1800 s, engaging them in a historical
event that has been silenced.
Burial Rites explores the historical aspect of this compelling, real life tale through setting by using
horses as transport, letters as communication and execution as a punishment for murder. Horses are no
longer commonly used as a mode of transport and letters are generally no longer used as a form of
communication, however, Kent optimises these historical features in her novel by including
predominant ways of life in the 1800 s. This effectively engages the readers as it sets them in an
alternative world. In the 1800 s, when Agnes life was taken not knowing if she was innocent or not,
death was her sentence. Kent includes this within the novel to enhance the historical genre as in many
countries of the world today, it is usually 20 years in prison for murder Setting functions to engage
readers through placing them in a time and place foreign to them, as today, many

Incest Symbolism In Hamlet
Something is rotten in the state of Denmark states a character in the play Hamlet, written by William
Shakespeare (55). In this play, the Danish Monarchy has recently suffered the death of its King,
Hamlet, caused by the King s brother. Claudius then takes the throne and marries King Hamlet s
Queen, Gertrude and from this moment on Denmark begins to deteriorate. Shakespeare creates this
overarching theme of the deterioration of the monarchy to represent the collapse of the entire state. He
does this through developing the motif of incest and paralleling that motif to poison, as the incest
literally and symbolically represents the poison that kills the Danish Monarchy, starting with King
Hamlet. Hence, Shakespeare portrays the rotting of Denmark, through the decaying monarchs
symbolic incest and its allusion to poison, to depict Claudius role in destroying Denmark. ... Show

This is depicted in this line by Hamlet, Gertrude s son, who describes Claudius and Gertrude s
relationship as, a little more than kin and a little less than kind even though they are not closely related
(Shakespeare 26). Nevertheless, throughout the play Hamlet continually makes references to this
supposed incest, describing the monarchs relationship as ...an unweeded garden that grows to seed
(Shakespeare 29). Yet, the impact of this symbolic incest is far reaching as it poisons and affects the
entire kingdom. This parallel between the situation of the monarchy and the state is depicted, by
Shakespeare, when a Danish courier states that the cess of majesty dies not alone... (163), meaning
that the monarchs actions and cess affect the entire state. Thus, Shakespeare uses this symbolic incest
as it draws a parallel between the monarchs and the state as a whole, which becomes crucial when
considering the death of those

Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In Roger Fisher and William Ury
________________________________________ Roger Fisher and William Ury, Getting to Yes:
Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In, (New York: Penguin Books, 1983). In this classic text,
Fisher and Ury describe their four principles for effective negotiation. They also describe three
common obstacles to negotiation and discuss ways to overcome those obstacles. Fisher and Ury
explain that a good agreement is one which is wise and efficient, and which improves the parties
relationship. Wise agreements satisfy the parties interests and are fair and lasting. The authors goal is
to develop a method for reaching good agreements. Negotiations often take the ... Show more content

Negotiators may not be speaking to each other, but may simply be grandstanding for their respective
constituencies. The parties may not be listening to each other, but may instead be planning their own
responses. Even when the parties are speaking to each other and are listening, misunderstandings may
occur. To combat these problems, the parties should employ active listening. The listeners should give
the speaker their full attention, occasionally summarizing the speaker s points to confirm their
understanding. It is important to remember that understanding the other s case does not mean agreeing
with it. Speakers should direct their speech toward the other parties and keep focused on what they are
trying to communicate. Each side should avoid blaming or attacking the other, and should speak about
themselves. Generally the best way to deal with people problems is to prevent them from arising.
People problems are less likely to come up if the parties have a good relationship, and think of each
other as partners in negotiation rather than as adversaries. Focus on Interests Good agreements focus
on the parties interests, rather than their positions. As Fisher and Ury explain, Your position is
something you have decided upon. Your interests are what caused you to so decide. [p. 42] Defining a
problem in terms of positions means that at least one party will lose the dispute. When a problem is

Administration Is Poorly Or Carelessly Done
administration is poorly or carelessly done (e. g., starting meetings late can discourage some of the
most effective people from coming another time, vagueness about the agenda creates disorder in the
people s minds and often in the progress of the meetings, and failure to plan results in drifting).
Therefore, it benefits the preacher in charge and all of those associated with him/her, to plan and
execute the plan wisely. The end results of the planning may strengthen persons and groups in their
abilities, attitudes, habits, fellowship, and spiritual understanding and dedication. The record of the
past, recent, or distant holds no special comfort for this moment, except that the record suggests that
there is in our midst a viable, stable vehicle that can be successfully utilized. It will not come by
praying, and preaching, and singing alone. It must come by employing the instruments, skills, and
expertise of the administrative body under the direction of its black preacher to make his witness that
we are, indeed, sons and daughters of the Father. Taking into account the fact that many pastors are
not trained administrators, Howell continues to advocate that the Black Preacher s administrative roles
and expectations are plural in numbers. When the pastor s various administrative duties are listed and
grouped into meaningful classifications, the many roles begin to become clear. The following is a list
of these administrative roles using the acronym D.O.C.T.O.R., with a

Compare And Contrast Looking For Alibrandi
Melina Marchetta s 1993 novel, Looking for Alibrandi, is based on the story of an Italian teenage girl
living in Australia during the early 1990 s in Sydney. Kate Woods motion picture interpretation of the
book creates similarities and differences between the two texts. By comparing the relationships within
the characters of Josephine Alibrandi, Katia Alibrandi and Ivy Lloyd or Poison Ivy /Carly Bishop in
both texts, the audience is able to identify the likeness and contrasts among the film and novel.
Firstly, one of the characters that represents the similarities and differences between the two texts is
the narrator of the story, Josephine Alibrandi or Josie. The stubborn Italian teenager shares multiple

Poison Ivy and Carly are introduced differently in the novel. Ivy is the intelligent school captain of St
Martha s and Josie s rival. Carly is one of the pretentious try hards in the world (pg. 81) with a stuck
up and racist attitude. Both characters clash with Josie when it involves John Barton, Josie s crush, or
racism. One type of racist comment in the novel that Josie receives is: ...and you re more than a wog,
if you know what I mean. (pg. 82). This comment not only speaks of racism but Josie s illegitimacy
which earns Carly a hit in the face with one of Josie s text books which similarly occurs in both texts.
Carly s personality is also revealed in the film when Josie narrates: because at St Martha s it s all
about money, prestige and what your father does for a living. Carly, it seems, was brought up among
wealthy racists and therefore affecting her behaviour. Furthermore, Carly and Poison Ivy may share
similarities to their combined character in the film but this creates differences with the character
development in the novel. One of the significant differences between the two texts is that the film
combines the characters of Carly and Ivy. Thus, creating an antagonist who is John Barton s friend,
high level of intelligence, the role of school captain, a racist mindset and Josie s biggest rival. In the
novel, however, Josie and Ivy are able to form a bond because of John s suicide. This is evident when
Josie offers to Ivy: If we go to the same university and we bump into each other one day, let s have a
cappuccino and talk. (pg. 242). In contrary, after John s death in the film, a cold Carly questions Josie
and her group of friends: What is it with wogs? This obviously not being the beginning to a friendship
that eventually exists in the novel. Therefore, Carly and Ivy are two

Importance Of Human Interaction In The Novel The Fault In...
In today s society, human interaction is a must. People crave relationships to fill a void in life, feeding
off of others in order to succeed as well as develop the social skills needed to persevere in the world.
Human interaction (such as building relationships with loved ones) is a very critical and crucial part in
life. In 1932, an experiment by Harry Frederick Harlow a well known psychologist involving rhesus
monkeys was conducted. In this experiment, Harlow and his colleagues separated newborn rhesus
monkeys from their mothers, holding each one in isolation chambers. The study showed that when
placed in total isolation for the first eights months of life, denying all contact with other infants or with
either type of surrogate mother, they were permanently damaged. The need to be accepted and cared
for by another person (or in this case primate) is inevitable. In the novel, The Fault In Our Stars , a
theme surrounding relationships is present and plays a major role in developing the story. John Green
not only shows the effects of cancer and its side effects, he also shows how those detriments on the
one fighting the battle can affect friends and family around them, as well as the importance of building
relationships while you still can. The protagonist, Hazel Grace Lancaster, closes out the world and
everyone in it, in hopes of minimizing her path of destruction that will be made after she dies. On the
other hand, Augustus Waters is the light at the end of her

What Are The Long Term Causes Of The Great Depression
The Great Depression was a time in the U.S where the economy had dropped and the majority of the
population struggled with poverty. One of the long term causes of the Great Depression was that there
was no program to help aid the people because President Hoover believed in rugged individualism,
another long term reason of the depression was that the people had placed money on the banks and the
banks would share it for the stock market and usually didn t give it back. Hoover was elected in 1928,
he believed in rugged individualism, natural cycles, and voluntary action which prolonged the

Purathrive B12 Research Papers
One of the most vital nutrients for good health is vitamin B12. It comes from animal foods and is
responsible for big things such as the synthesis of DNA and the sheath that protects the nerve cells.
There are lots of things you could be doing to deplete the essential B12 your body needs, including
eating an unhealthy diet, smoking, and drinking, but there are also things like pregnancy and growing
older that can be affecting how much B12 your body is getting. To make it even worse, your body can
have a hard time absorbing a B12 supplement, so it s important to make sure you are getting a
supplement that guarantees absorption, which is the promise that Purathrive makes behind their B12

The Caribbean has had celebrated economists who, in their works, always sought to define the

a need for a Third World economic story that was separate from that developed in more advanced
nations. Economics, however, has been regarded as a dismal science (Carlyle 1849) and some have
questioned if it is a science at all. For this essay, we assume that economics is a science and ask Is and

Dunbar in another article (undated) included expertise as part of the scientific thinking. Ayalon and

indicates that the processes mentioned may not be clear cut in their use, that is, one process may be a
part of another process. Most of the methods mentioned by Dunbar and Klahr (2012) will be discussed
but with considerations of other authors.
Dunbar (undated) highlighted three aspects scientific thinking, one of which is hypothesis testing. In
hypothesis testing logic is applied to a set of statements. These statements or propositions are a
combination of premises and conclusions. The premises and their conclusions are evaluated for their
truthfulness or justifiability of explanation. How these propositions are examined is referred to as
reasoning strategies. There are three strategies in hypothesis testing: induction, deduction and
abduction. These three processes also referred to as Peirce s Inferential Triad, can be used under other
reasoning processes such as causal reasoning. In addition, hypothesis testing may be on an individual
level or collaboratively (note that collaborative reasoning is mentioned as a reasoning process by
Dunbar and Klahr (2012)).

The conflict, which is the dictator Rafael Trujillo and his oppressive reign, is the reason why the
sisters each discover their own courage throughout the novel. Though the novel centers around the
Mirabal sisters as they grow up, the source of many of their problems is Trujillo and his actions that
are directly affecting their lives. These actions include withholding Minerva s license to practice law,
sending all but one of the husbands to prison, and putting Minerva and María Teresa under house

readers that gives off a sense of utmost importance. It is clear that her entire reason to write the novel

Jif s flagship creamy peanut butter spread was first introduced in 1958. Since 1981, Jif has been the
leading peanut butter brand in the United States. As of 1998, Jif had an estimated 42.5% of the market

brand in the U.S. by the famous jelly manufacturer was likely a strategic move to streamline

Peanut butter is sold primarily as a bread spread, and secondarily as an ingredient for other meals. The
distribution of peanut butter is about 70% creamy to 30% crunchy (Kellogg). In 2005, peanut butter

Howard Gardner s Multiple Intelligences Theory
Howard Gardner said, Anything that is worth teaching can be presented in many different ways. These
multiple ways can make use of our multiple intelligence. Howard Gardner has written a book about a
theory he called the Multiple Intelligences theory, in which Gardner states that people have one main
intelligence from which they learn. There are eight different intelligences, according to Gardner,
explaining how people learn best and the different strengths of learning they exhibit. Although
Gardner s Multiple Intelligences theory has been around since the 1980s, it is still relevant and useful
to those in all areas of the education process. Some people believe that Howard Gardner s theory is too
broad and difficult to write a curriculum around. It has been proven, however, in certain instances, that
the utilization of this theory raises students scores and their success rates. Those individuals who are
in school to become educators are taught that, whatever expectations they have for the students, those
levels will be met by the students. If the student has already failed in the teacher s mind, then the
student will continue to fail. Students are very perceptive individuals and can tell what teachers
feelings are toward them. This consequence is why future teachers are told to have high expectations
for every student. In the article Empowering Students through Multiple Intelligences, the story is told
of a teacher who had a group of students who had discouraging

The Role Of An Island In E. Lockhart s We Were Lias
In We Were Liars by E. Lockhart, the setting of an island is crucial to the story, both in a symbolic
sense and logistically. As Cadence struggles to regain her memory and discover her family s secrets,
the island plays an important role in her story. One way the island does this is by showing the isolation
of the family from the outside world. In a book, islands often represent seclusion. Islands are
surrounded by water and thus disconnected from outside civilization, just as the Sinclairs are. Cadence
comes from a very privileged family, a family with very little perspective. The island embodies the

Malcolm X Historiography
The Autobiography of Malcolm X, written by Malcolm X himself and Alex Haley, concentrates on
Malcolm X s unapologetic and autodidactism. Although his approach to education was unorthodox,
once Malcolm X started to read he could not stop. His thirst for education became unquenchable.
During his time in prison he managed to self educate about the religion of Islam and identify his true
self. Living in America where black kids are discouraged and laughed at for trying to pursue a
professional career, Malcolm X dropped out of high school because the education system failed him.
His teacher told him that a person of his kind was not suitable for a sophisticated sifficticated role as a
lawyer, instead a good carpenter was more reasonable. What that ... Show more content on

Throughout his life Malcolm X faced oppression from white people. From having his family s house
burned by the KKK, to having his father killed by a white supremacy group and leaving his mother
destroyed, Malcolm had a deep sense of hatred towards white people in America. This resulted in
Malcolm developing this philosophy that black people should in no way accept the help of white
people. While he was in prison learning about the nation of Islam, his views on white America grew
strong. Leading to his advocacy to Pan Africanism. Malcolm shares in the book, that freedom,
independence and self respect could never be achieved by the Negro in America, and that therefore the
Negro should leave America to the white man and return to his African land of origin. He simply
believed that unless black people create a black nation, blacks in America could never be
economically stable due to the discrimination they will continuously face. Later on in the book, he
contradicts himself after his trip to Mecca and changes his views. Neglecting his past belief of Pan
Africanism, Malcolm came to the realization that blacks in America could be successful with the
participation of whites fighting alongside them for equal rights. This came to be as a result of
Malcolm witnessing race problems from different perspective around the

Glad to see you again LV Team!
These past few weeks we have covered the central tendency, variability, correlation and now we will
look at something that has a correlation with standard deviation and mean. I hope you still remember
the bell shape of the standard deviation graph! That is ok, if you do not. I will briefly do my best to
summarize it. The Standard Deviation (SD) is the average distance from the mean. In a normal
distribution, the standard deviation is the standard that is 34 % of the cases to the right that would be
one positive standard deviation and 34% to the left and that would be one negative SD. Majority of the
data will be between 3 and +3 standard deviation from the mean; which is applicable to all normal ...

For example, chemistry and physics grade are completely different; however, if one has the SD, mean
then one could find out the z score to compare the location. Mary got a score of 70, SD= 10 and mean
of 60 on a chemistry exam. She also got a score of 80, SD= 5, mean= 75 for physics.
Z score for chemistry= (70 60)/1= 1
Z score for physics= (80 75)/10= 0.5
We can say that Mary s score for chemistry was 1 SD above the class mean and physics was 0.5 above
the class mean.
Let s do some more practices!
***The following four cases are based on a normal distribution of scores with Mean = 75 and the SD
= 6.38.
¥ What is the probability of a score falling between a raw score of 70 and 80?
We are in Olive oil business and we would like to know the probability of selling 70 to 80 bottles? The
average mean is 75 and the SD is 6.38 Z= (70 75)/6.38= 0.78 Z= (80 75)/6.38= 0.78
Once we get the z score, we want to convert it to probability values. We know at 1value it is 34% but
we have only 0.78. We will use the appendix D that is on the screen, find 0.78 in section A (z value)
and run your finger to section B (area between mean and Z). The results are 0.2823 convert in %;
which is 28.23%. One thing, there is no negative z values in the appendix because it symmetrical. So
to the right of the mean it is 28.23% and to the left 28.23%; with a total % of 56.46%.
The probability of selling 70 to 80 bottles would be 56.46%.
What is the probability of a score falling above a

Social Classes In The United States
It is said that the United States is made up of around six different social classes, however the three
main classes are better known as the Upper, Middle, and Lower class. The three remaining classes are
better known as subcategories for each of the main classes. These subcategories help break the classes
up giving them their individual class.
The upper class makes up roughly 1% of the United States population. This class is best known as the
class of wealth. This wealth is referred to as old (inherited) money. Individuals within the upper class
are often known by and for their family name and/or wealth. Examples being the Rockefellers and the
Kennedys. Although these individuals are born into money, most are educated at the biggest and most
prestigious colleges in the United States. Most individuals use this education to continue family
businesses or to make a name for themselves outside the family name. Within ... Show more content

Individuals that make up the middle class earn their income by means of working a professional job. A
large majority of this group are educated with college degrees or have attended college for a period of
time outside of high school. The middle class is often referred to as the white collar class which in
turn gets its name from the fact that many middle class men wear suits with white shirts to work daily.
Examples of the middle class are those that are doctors, lawyers, and pharmacist. A category that can
be found within the middle class is the working class. This class makes up 30% of the United States
population. Individuals within this class are educated with college and/or technical degrees or training.
This group can also be referred to as the blue collared class, which in turn means that this group is
likely to wear uniforms instead of suits and ties. Examples of these individuals would be those that are
electricians, carpenters and police

Aging And Its Effects On The Aging
Also spelled as ageing, this is generally the process of becoming old. It is the in a way the opposite of
immortality. In a broader aspect, it may occur to single cells in an organism also called cellular
senescence or the population of a species, known as population ageing. This process primarily affects
human beings and fungi. In humans, it signifies the accumulation of various changes which occur over
time. The changes include physical, social and psychological changes.
Causes of aging are very uncertain. Besides, there are several factors which predispose an individual
to premature aging. Current theories suggest that this process occurs to due to cellular damage such as

Old persons are also predisposed to various medical conditions including diabetes and irritable bowel
syndrome that may increase the chances of constipation.
The genitourinary system
The bladder and urinary tract depict the epitome of various old age associated conditions. Urinary
incontinence otherwise known as loss of bladder control is a common problem associated with aging.
Besides old age, diabetes and other conditions also contribute to incontinence. Other common
conditions include menopause for women and enlarged prostate for men.
Memory
Advancing age is commonly associated with loss of memory. The inability to maintain both short term
and long term memory is serious. Learning new things or remembering familiar words and names can
be quite daunting.
Senses Eyes and Ears
Advancing age is a common hindrance to the proper functioning of the body senses. The eyes will
have difficulty focusing on near and distant objects. Adapting to different levels of light is the other
common problem. Cataracts, also called clouding of vision is another common condition that results
from changes in eye s lens. Hearing abilities also diminish. With this, you will have difficulties
following a conversation or hearing high frequencies.

A Nationalist Han Chinese Identity
Today, in the oil rich Xinjiang Province of Northwestern China, millions of Turkic speaking Uyghurs
live in constant fear. Beards and headscarves banned. Mosques barred from broadcasting the azan, the
Islamic invocation of prayer. Unjustified rape of Uyghur women. Protesting for basic human rights
gets you written on a list of pan Turkist counter revolutionaries. Receiving phone calls from foreign
relatives gets you a visit from the secret police. And still, to the apparent dismay of the CCP, the ethnic
identity of Uyghurs still exists, after decades of state sponsored repression. Why do the Uyghurs
vehemently oppose Han Chinese integration? Why has the CCP taken unprecedented steps to forcibly
assimilate ethnic Chinese Muslims? The creation of a nationalist Han Chinese identity grounded in an
atheist communist state in 1949 engendered conflicts with Chinese ethnic Muslim minorities, due to
failed coercive integration and assimilation efforts and socioeconomic policy. After the annihilation by
the GMT in 1933, the CCP fled and walked through the unpleasant territory of Southwest China for
two years in what later came to be known as the Long March. Along the way, the CCP expectedly
came into direct contact with different ethnic minorities. These encounters professedly affected the
perspectives of CCP pioneers; the acknowledgment of China s immense diversity and the need to
acquire legitimacy as well as support from these ethnic minorities for the Communist insurgency

Disadvantages Of Razor Blades
Introduction
Razor blades are a common topic in the world of consumers. They are available in many different
variations and from many different brands. Differences in price are huge, often resulting in frustrations
from consumers. In this thesis, I will try to explain differences between the brands by taking a closer
look at the technical aspects of the available razor blades.
Diamond like carbon is a class of amorphous carbon material which displays some typical properties
of diamond. This material is often applied as coating to other materials so that it can benefit from
some of the material properties of the DLC (diamond like carbon). It is known that one of the
properties of a DLC is a high hardness, which, on the other hand, makes it difficult to bond the
material to most metals. Some processes are known to tackle this problem, which we will discuss later.
[1]
Around the year 2000 more became known about the attractive properties of diamond like carbons and
Gillette, the market leader of razor blades, saw its potential. Gillette patented the use of particular
DLC s applied to the cutting edges of the razors. By that it improved the hardness, shave ability and
corrosion ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Often people do not understand why the shaving experience could be so different. This is possibly
caused by the DLC s, which may not be used by store brands because of patents. Gillette has been
very smart creating a fence around itself by having so many patents regarding the cutting edges of
razors. It can really distinguish from the cheaper brands with this technology. Apparently consumers
really seem to like the razor blades with DLC film applied to it, while Gillette is the global market
leader with 70 percent in the grooming business. [5] The DLC results in longer useful life and
reducing the pull of the hairs due to the sharp

Pros: There are several benefits to opening a secondary production plant and warehouse: increased
output, savings on freight costs, close proximity to current retail shops, and the potential to open new
retail stores. The new facility will be an exact replication of the West Coast facility, with the exception
of offices, on sight retail outlet, and tour groups. The advantage of the East Coast facility being an
exact replication, Scharffen Berger will be able to forecast their exact yearly production output, in
which will be double to keep up with demand. Insert small chart here Opening a facility in Kentucky

  • 2. Similarities Between The United States And The Federal System The United States Federal System and the current Federal System for the European Union have many similarities and differences. The traditional division of the functions of a federal government are the legislative, executive and the judicial branch. The United States is made up all three branches separately to check potential abuses and balance each of the branches. The European Union also has three main political institutions that constitute the executive and legislative branches, as well as the independent judiciary with the power to exercise judicial review (European Parliament). The legislative Branch for the United States is divided into two parts: House of Representatives and the Senate. The House is made up of 435 elected members, which is divided among the 50 states in amount to their total population. The Speaker of the House, who is the third in the line of succession to the Presidency, is elected by the Representatives. There are only a few differences between the House and the Parliament such as the House has the right to introduce new legislation while the Parliament has no right to initiate legislation but co determines EU legislative planning (European Parliament). For the Senate and the Council of the European Union, it is also the exact same thing as the House and the Parliament. The only differences between the Senate and the Council are: there are two senators from each Senators from each State in the Senate while there is one representative from each Member State government and one vote per Senate member while the member state population of the Council determines how many votes each member State has (European ... While the Televisions had the same exterior as the TV s in the 1980 s, they had an thought provoking feature in them, and this was because they were portable and had voice recognition to be able to respond to the customer with a greater efficiency. Even though the TV was primarily used for taking Marty s commands, the fact that it was moveable was quite bewildering to me as a spectator. The TV s in the movie had the identical appearance as the former boxed television s that were used in the 1980 s and had the equivalent tuning knobs built in to the bottom of the TV. Airborne Cars: The concept of transport that was presented in the movie was of flying cars which I thought was quite an unoriginal idea to most modernized movies. The flying cars seen were typically like jet aircrafts and supercars that exist today. The cars were capable of transporting people as any normal vehicle would but were portrayed to be competent to fly at extraordinary speeds. The distinct features of the flying cars were that they ... I feel that an encroachment in technology isn t regarded to be as elevated as it was in the 1980 s and other years, principally since there were more basic things that were not thought of and the fact that there s not much left but to just go forward in those views sort of renders it so that the technology won t be becoming cutting edge anytime ... • 4. Figurative Language In Truman Capote s A Christmas Memory The short story I read was A Christmas Memory by Truman Capote. The book was mainly about two characters, Buddy and his friend, and a memorable Christmas that they spent together a couple of years back before Buddy s friend passed away. Basically the whole story is a memoir, his own memories and experiences , because Buddy is reminiscing on the past and is speaking upon the memories that he remembers from that Christmas spent with his friend. Even though it was a short story, Capote did a well enough job of describing not only the characters, but also their relationship with literary devices such as figurative language, symbolism, theme, and many more. My first point will be about the author s major use of figurative language. For example, in A Christmas Memory Buddy said, She is wearing tennis shoes and a shapeless gray sweater over a summery calico dress, (Capote 12) which depicts imagery since Buddy went into detail and gave a vivid image of what his friend was wearing that day. Another example within the story was when Buddy s friend was speaking to Buddy and said I know where we ll find real pretty trees, Buddy. And Holly, too. With berries as big as your eyes. (Capote 7) Within this quote lies a simile because Buddy s friend ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Macroeconomics for Business Debt Sustainability BS1780 Macroeconomics for Business Problem Set 3 Group Assignment February 2016 1) Assuming that the nominal interest rate, the inflation rate, the real GDP growth and primary deficit remain constant for the next year, we can compute the projected next year end debt as a percentage of GDP by using the equation: dt+1=dt+i πdt grdt st+1 In this case, dt is the public debt (as % of GDP) of 2011, which is 88%; i is the government interest rate 7% according to our assumption; π is the inflation rate, which was 2% if it is held constant constant in the next year; gr is 1%, the real GDP growth; and st+1 is the primary deficit, which is 3%. The movement ultimately rejected anything that looked to the past for identity. Instead, it glorified speed, technology, youth, and the idea of anything industrial and mass produced. Spain ruled most of South America and parts of Central America and North America. Portugal primarily ruled the country of Brazil. These lands of Central and South America became known as Latin America. The Spaniards and Portuguese rulers, in my opinion, did not reflect the love of Christ through their interactions with the indigenous people. The colonial social structure, colonial economic system and the colonial state and church implemented by the new rulers as well as their interactions with the indigenous people will support my opinion. Film and realism are connected to one another; it gives the audience an opportunity to interpret the film in their own perspective, in relation to the real world. As someone with a firm opposition to editing and montage, Bazin stated that the mise en scène truly represents true continuity in film, reproducing the real world more realistically. (Cardullo, 7) There are two editing systems: Classical Hollywood Cinema and Neorealist Cinema. From their similarities and differences, it can be said that Neorealist Cinema portrays the real world more realistically and effectively than CHC... In order to produce Bazin s true continuity and reproduce situations more realistically, the filmmaker must choose an effective editing system, refrain from interrupting the flow of images, and use minimal editing, proven through the two films Bicycle Thieves (Neorealist Cinema) and Stagecoach (CHC). According to Bazin s theory on realism, there are different forms of realism using different techniques and technologies depending on the period. This idea sounds very simple, but it lays a profound message to many different events and issues that are happening around us, including many big challenges to the world such as racial and ethnic discrimination. However, there is a sub issue to those challenges that we rarely think of it as a discrimination girls education. By investing in a good education for girls all over the world teaching them how to empower themselves, we are contributing to eliminate discrimination and empower the world. A report from UNESCO in October 2013 shows some shocking statistics about girls and women around the world. There are 1.8 billion young people in the world. Approximately half of them 900 million are adolescent girls and young women, but 62 millions girls worldwide are not in school. As a result, they lack the basic skills for work: Two thirds of the 774 million illiterate people in the world are female. This will have some lifelong effects. Girls will face limited opportunities and choices in the job market. They lack basic health knowledge and will be subjected to serious health risks, and threatened by violence. They don t know about their basic rights, so their views and concerns are often unheard. These three effects are enough to prove that girls are discriminated against as females Therefore, if education is the key to their future, what doors can it open for those girls? Starting from cool mountain streams, the river eventually became a thunderous, silty force of nature as it entered the canyons along its path. The river nourished wetlands and other riparian habitats from the headwaters in the Rocky Mountains to the delta at the Sea of Cortez in Northwest Mexico. Settlers along the river harnessed these waters mainly for agriculture via irrigation canals, but flooding from spring runoff wreaked havoc on agricultural land, prevented development in the floodplain and full utilization of the water, a waste in the eyes of western farmers. The real question is how to do that, whether via dam decommission or a less extreme policy change. • 14. Purpose Of Life In The Mayor Of Casterbridge By Thomas Hardy The purpose of life is trailed by a string of theories, molded by the minds of individuals and decorated with their personal opinions. Some may say that the purpose of life is success. Those who fancy this ideology spend every given minute doing the absolute most they can do in order to feed this new found obsession of success. Now, those same people may say that once they have obtained success, their determination to maintain a dedicated reputation is no longer necessary. Their hard work has finally paid off or so they thought. These people who believe this, are wrong. Success is the product of never ending diligence and persistence. These success stories happen when an individual continues to work hard, even when they have reached their peaks. It is the act of maintaining respect in a position, and understanding that confidence is a preferred descriptor to arrogance. Because in the end, success is knowing that the second someone feels secure in a position, inevitable change has the power to strip that happiness away from them. This very concept can be learned by Thomas Hardy in his novel The Mayor of Casterbridge. Through Henchard s character, the weather, and the transient nature of power and status, people should never be too comfortable in a position or situation because nothing is permanent, except change. Hardy uses Michael Henchard as a vehicle to illuminate that sudden change can affect positioning in relationships causing abandonment when efforts to maintain these ... Livy’s The Rise of Rome Essays Livy s The Rise of Rome Livy s The Rise of Rome serves as the ultimate catalogue of Roman history, elaborating on the accomplishments of each king and set of consuls through the ages of its vast empire. In the first five books, Livy lays the groundwork for the history of Rome and sets forth a model for all of Rome to follow. For him, the special and salutary benefit of the study of history is to behold evidence of every sort of behaviour set forth as on a splendid memorial; from it you may select for yourself and for your country what to emulate, from it what to avoid, whether basely begun or basely concluded. The attributes relating to Tarquin Superbus s effectiveness as a leader hardly stray off the path set forth by Romulus. Once again, we see the necessity for Roman kings to be skilled in the art of war, leading massive armies to victory for the benefit of the empire. In addition to his prowess on the battlefield, Tarquin demonstrated an overwhelming sense of ambition, a feature that brings with it the desire for power and greatness, the very same desire that characterized Rome as a city. Just as Romulus fought for power against his brother Remus, so too did Tarquin fight for his right to power against Servius. Tarquin s acquisition of the throne came through brute force, as overwhelming numbers and his own physical strength helped to literally cast Servius from the steps of power. Tarquin s characteristics mirrored many of the other kings both before and after him, and so it is easy to find justification for his position as a king of Rome. Livy s portrayal of Tarquin s rule, however, strays a great deal from the characterization of Tarquin as worthy of holding such a powerful position. Livy s narrative effectively strips the reader of the ability to make an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 17. The Creative Curriculum Program Is An Effective Learning... The Creative Curriculum program is an effective learning style that assists preschool children ranging from ages 3 to 5 years old. Founded by a former preschool teacher, Diane Trister Dodge, this early childhood education program with a comprehensive curriculum is structured to be directed by the teacher, but initiated by the children. The philosophy of the Creative Curriculum is to allow the children to learn at their best efforts in an environment that is safe and open for exploration. Child centers that use this curriculum allow the children to develop and learn through planned programming, select materials, and guided learning. The goal is to enhance their physical, cognitive, language, social, and emotional development through hands on learning activities. The sole principle of the curriculum program is to identify the learning styles of the children, and strengthen them through learning activities that spark their interests. This is to help the children become enthusiastic learners. The content areas covered within the Creative Curriculum are: literacy, math, science, social studies, the arts, and technology. Educators of the curriculum are well qualified and are trained to possess the ability to provide positive classroom management, build analytical skills and relationship skills. The role of the teacher is to guide the learning process. With a student to teacher ratio of 7:1,the teachers are there to observe and evaluate the progress of the children. The ... As a first step, the professors organize students into groups of four to five people, balancing the groups based on both academic major and performance in the class to date (including performance on homework and the first exam), as well as to achieve diversity. The group format is used to encourage students to learn from each other, to motivate students to consider alternative viewpoints, to develop students understanding of group dynamics, and to limit the amount of time required of the project for both students and the faculty who must grade it. Each professor uses a different approach in selecting the industry and companies for analysis. One professor takes industry suggestions from the class (with the restriction that there be sufficient companies so that no more than two groups will have to analyze the same pair of companies), writes the suggestions on the board, and asks students to vote for their top two choices. Then, a second vote is taken from among the top two original suggestions, with a majority vote determining the industry to be analyzed. • 19. Premarital Sex And Its Effects In a study conducted in the United States, 61 percent of men and 12 percent of women born prior to 1910 admitted to having premarital sex; the gender disparity may have been caused by cultural double standards regarding the admission of sexual activity. Starting in the 1920s, and especially after World War II, premarital sex became more common; this was especially prevalent among women. By the end of the 20th century, between 75 and 80 percent of Americans had sex before the age of 19. During the colonial period, premarital sex was publicly frowned upon but privately condoned to an extent. Even though premarital sex was somewhat condoned, having a child outside of wedlock was not. If a pregnancy resulted from premarital sex, the young couple were expected to marry. Beginning in the 1950s, as premarital sex became more common, the stigma attached to it lessened for many people. Love began to become enough for a reason to practice sex, instead of marriage or engagement in the eyes of many. The percentage of ever married men and women who had premarital sex (20 44 years old) between 2006 and 2010 is 90.6% men and 86% women (www.cdc.gov). • 21. Analysis Of Burial Rites By Hannah Kent Burial Rites is a novel based on a true story by Hannah Kent, which provides a voice to Agnes Magnusdottir, a convicted criminal who was executed for a crime she may or may not have committed. Kent conveys the historical genre through the novel and utilises setting in order to engage readers by including modes of communication, transport and the way of life in the 1800 s that are not commonly used anymore. Throughout the novel, Kent optimises dialogue through the use of old terms and utilising old court documents which place readers in the 1800 s, engaging them in a historical event that has been silenced. Burial Rites explores the historical aspect of this compelling, real life tale through setting by using horses as transport, letters as communication and execution as a punishment for murder. Horses are no longer commonly used as a mode of transport and letters are generally no longer used as a form of communication, however, Kent optimises these historical features in her novel by including predominant ways of life in the 1800 s. This effectively engages the readers as it sets them in an alternative world. In the 1800 s, when Agnes life was taken not knowing if she was innocent or not, death was her sentence. Kent includes this within the novel to enhance the historical genre as in many countries of the world today, it is usually 20 years in prison for murder Setting functions to engage readers through placing them in a time and place foreign to them, as today, many ... • 22. Incest Symbolism In Hamlet Something is rotten in the state of Denmark states a character in the play Hamlet, written by William Shakespeare (55). In this play, the Danish Monarchy has recently suffered the death of its King, Hamlet, caused by the King s brother. Claudius then takes the throne and marries King Hamlet s Queen, Gertrude and from this moment on Denmark begins to deteriorate. Shakespeare creates this overarching theme of the deterioration of the monarchy to represent the collapse of the entire state. He does this through developing the motif of incest and paralleling that motif to poison, as the incest literally and symbolically represents the poison that kills the Danish Monarchy, starting with King Hamlet. Hence, Shakespeare portrays the rotting of Denmark, through the decaying monarchs symbolic incest and its allusion to poison, to depict Claudius role in destroying Denmark. ... Negotiators may not be speaking to each other, but may simply be grandstanding for their respective constituencies. The parties may not be listening to each other, but may instead be planning their own responses. Even when the parties are speaking to each other and are listening, misunderstandings may occur. To combat these problems, the parties should employ active listening. The listeners should give the speaker their full attention, occasionally summarizing the speaker s points to confirm their understanding. It is important to remember that understanding the other s case does not mean agreeing with it. Speakers should direct their speech toward the other parties and keep focused on what they are trying to communicate. Each side should avoid blaming or attacking the other, and should speak about themselves. Generally the best way to deal with people problems is to prevent them from arising. People problems are less likely to come up if the parties have a good relationship, and think of each other as partners in negotiation rather than as adversaries. Focus on Interests Good agreements focus on the parties interests, rather than their positions. As Fisher and Ury explain, Your position is something you have decided upon. People crave relationships to fill a void in life, feeding off of others in order to succeed as well as develop the social skills needed to persevere in the world. Human interaction (such as building relationships with loved ones) is a very critical and crucial part in life. In 1932, an experiment by Harry Frederick Harlow a well known psychologist involving rhesus monkeys was conducted. • 39. Howard Gardner s Multiple Intelligences Theory Howard Gardner said, Anything that is worth teaching can be presented in many different ways. These multiple ways can make use of our multiple intelligence. Howard Gardner has written a book about a theory he called the Multiple Intelligences theory, in which Gardner states that people have one main intelligence from which they learn. There are eight different intelligences, according to Gardner, explaining how people learn best and the different strengths of learning they exhibit. Although Gardner s Multiple Intelligences theory has been around since the 1980s, it is still relevant and useful to those in all areas of the education process. Some people believe that Howard Gardner s theory is too broad and difficult to write a curriculum around. It has been proven, however, in certain instances, that the utilization of this theory raises students scores and their success rates. Those individuals who are in school to become educators are taught that, whatever expectations they have for the students, those levels will be met by the students. If the student has already failed in the teacher s mind, then the student will continue to fail. Students are very perceptive individuals and can tell what teachers feelings are toward them. This consequence is why future teachers are told to have high expectations for every student. In the article Empowering Students through Multiple Intelligences, the story is told of a teacher who had a group of students who had discouraging ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. The Role Of An Island In E. Lockhart s We Were Lias In We Were Liars by E. Lockhart, the setting of an island is crucial to the story, both in a symbolic sense and logistically. As Cadence struggles to regain her memory and discover her family s secrets, the island plays an important role in her story. One way the island does this is by showing the isolation of the family from the outside world. In a book, islands often represent seclusion. Islands are surrounded by water and thus disconnected from outside civilization, just as the Sinclairs are. Cadence comes from a very privileged family, a family with very little perspective. The island embodies the family s unawareness of the issues in the world. Another way in which the setting adds meaning to the story is how only the surface of an island ... Although his approach to education was unorthodox, once Malcolm X started to read he could not stop. His thirst for education became unquenchable. During his time in prison he managed to self educate about the religion of Islam and identify his true self. Living in America where black kids are discouraged and laughed at for trying to pursue a professional career, Malcolm X dropped out of high school because the education system failed him. His teacher told him that a person of his kind was not suitable for a sophisticated sifficticated role as a lawyer, instead a good carpenter was more reasonable. What that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Throughout his life Malcolm X faced oppression from white people. From having his family s house burned by the KKK, to having his father killed by a white supremacy group and leaving his mother destroyed, Malcolm had a deep sense of hatred towards white people in America. This resulted in Malcolm developing this philosophy that black people should in no way accept the help of white people. While he was in prison learning about the nation of Islam, his views on white America grew strong. Leading to his advocacy to Pan Africanism. Malcolm shares in the book, that freedom, independence and self respect could never be achieved by the Negro in America, and that therefore the Negro should leave America to the white man and return to his African land of origin. He simply believed that unless black people create a black nation, blacks in America could never be economically stable due to the discrimination they will continuously face. Later on in the book, he contradicts himself after his trip to Mecca and changes his views. Neglecting his past belief of Pan Africanism, Malcolm came to the realization that blacks in America could be successful with the participation of whites fighting alongside them for equal rights. These past few weeks we have covered the central tendency, variability, correlation and now we will look at something that has a correlation with standard deviation and mean. I hope you still remember the bell shape of the standard deviation graph! That is ok, if you do not. I will briefly do my best to summarize it. The Standard Deviation (SD) is the average distance from the mean. In a normal distribution, the standard deviation is the standard that is 34 % of the cases to the right that would be one positive standard deviation and 34% to the left and that would be one negative SD. Majority of the data will be between 3 and +3 standard deviation from the mean; which is applicable to all normal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Z score for chemistry= (70 60)/1= 1 Z score for physics= (80 75)/10= 0.5 We can say that Mary s score for chemistry was 1 SD above the class mean and physics was 0.5 above the class mean. Let s do some more practices! ***The following four cases are based on a normal distribution of scores with Mean = 75 and the SD = 6.38. ¥ What is the probability of a score falling between a raw score of 70 and 80? We are in Olive oil business and we would like to know the probability of selling 70 to 80 bottles? The average mean is 75 and the SD is 6.38 Z= (70 75)/6.38= 0.78 Z= (80 75)/6.38= 0.78 Once we get the z score, we want to convert it to probability values. We know at 1value it is 34% but we have only 0.78. We will use the appendix D that is on the screen, find 0.78 in section A (z value) and run your finger to section B (area between mean and Z). The results are 0.2823 convert in %; which is 28.23%. One thing, there is no negative z values in the appendix because it symmetrical. So to the right of the mean it is 28.23% and to the left 28.23%; with a total % of 56.46%. The probability of selling 70 to 80 bottles would be 56.46%. Protesting for basic human rights gets you written on a list of pan Turkist counter revolutionaries. Receiving phone calls from foreign relatives gets you a visit from the secret police. And still, to the apparent dismay of the CCP, the ethnic identity of Uyghurs still exists, after decades of state sponsored repression. Why do the Uyghurs vehemently oppose Han Chinese integration? Why has the CCP taken unprecedented steps to forcibly assimilate ethnic Chinese Muslims? The creation of a nationalist Han Chinese identity grounded in an atheist communist state in 1949 engendered conflicts with Chinese ethnic Muslim minorities, due to failed coercive integration and assimilation efforts and socioeconomic policy. After the annihilation by the GMT in 1933, the CCP fled and walked through the unpleasant territory of Southwest China for two years in what later came to be known as the Long March. Along the way, the CCP expectedly came into direct contact with different ethnic minorities. • 49. Disadvantages Of Razor Blades Introduction Razor blades are a common topic in the world of consumers. They are available in many different variations and from many different brands. Differences in price are huge, often resulting in frustrations from consumers. In this thesis, I will try to explain differences between the brands by taking a closer look at the technical aspects of the available razor blades. Diamond like carbon is a class of amorphous carbon material which displays some typical properties of diamond. This material is often applied as coating to other materials so that it can benefit from some of the material properties of the DLC (diamond like carbon). It is known that one of the properties of a DLC is a high hardness, which, on the other hand, makes it difficult to bond the material to most metals. Some processes are known to tackle this problem, which we will discuss later. [1] Around the year 2000 more became known about the attractive properties of diamond like carbons and Gillette, the market leader of razor blades, saw its potential.
