The City By Dos Passos Ethos
We discussed how New York is presented as a big, infernal, dynamic machine that systematically
crashes the hopes of those who live in it. It is a metropolis filled with lights and colour moving in such
a fast and chaotic pace that leaves its citizens behind. It was supposed to be the promised land for the
thousands of immigrants who came and could get rich from scratch, the land of opportoonity (54);
instead, it is the place where the American Dream comes to die and the people who inhabit it become
disenchanted. A varied city with people from different nationalities, classes and backgrounds but all of
them submerged in the incessant wheel of capitalism and industrialization .A fragmented and reifying
city that alienates and reifies its inhabitants. We also examined the different cinematic techniques
displayed in the book and its effect on the narration. The first one used by Dos Passos was montage, as
the structure is very similar. It plays with space, time , fragmentation and contrast. The plots are
intertwined and the stories and points of view juxtaposed to show how individuals are dehumanised by
capitalism. The brief ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nevertheless, there is masterful combination between the descriptions of the objective and a
subjective reality that manifests through focalization . The narration and the focalization are shifting
constantly, contributing to create multiple perspectives. Most of the story is narrated in third person
but there are shifting moments to the point of view of a specific character to depict his or her feelings.
Dos Passos seems to be a literary forerunner of Cinema Verité, combining accurate, detailed and
objective descriptions with subjective focalization. It is results a perfect narration and depiction of the

New Age Corporate Houses Adopt
The paradigms through which businesses think and act smarter controls the inherent need to
continuously ideate and innovate in their technology, where the services they provide is not only more
efficient but more responsive to business and community needs. Mostly the underlying key to
realizing that vision is how structurally their offerings drive change, and transform the way they work.
The entities of technology that new age corporate houses adopt is driven by the demands of the digital
economy, making more effective spillovers in business operandi and maintaining the growth and

Looking to Cloud Computing, most businesses understand the need for stiffer competitive advantage
and the market transitions that have affected margins considerably. The definition of Cloud, as the
world has largely adopted is the US Government s National Institute of Standards and Technology
(NIST) Definition of Cloud Computing, which states Cloud computing is a model for enabling
ubiquitous, convenient, on demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing
resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned
and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction. (Reference:
http://www.nist.gov/itl/cloud/) Now with the same ubiquity that is mentioned as above, there is this
rampant need for adopting virtualization and separating software from hardware because the recent
catalysts of changing culture in mobility and the flexible, scalable nature of enterprise needs presents
before it the option of procuring what it needs, when it needs. Then when the user found the need to
expand, it also found the need to divert and so re allocation of resources and moving one s safety
critical data beyond its four walls and a lot of the attention slowly shifted from converting their fixed
costs to their variable costs. So if organizations, find underutilized resources in the

Differences Between Feudalism in Europe and Japan Essay
European feudalism was based on contract and Japanese feudalism was based on personal relationship
with the lord and vassal. This helps prove that the differences between European and Japanese
feudalism made limited government more likely to develop in the West because a contract limits what
the lords and vassals could do. William, the king of English, said, I command you [the vassal] to
summon all those who are under your charge......and bring ready with you those five knights that you
owe me[.] 1 This helps prove that European feudalism was based on contract because when you owe
someone something, it implies an agreement. The key terms are I command you and owe. The vassal
has to send troops because he has to. He is under the rule of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

They were both worried for each other. Japan was more concerned about keeping order. This helps

This helps prove that Japan was more concerned about keeping order because Japan doesn t want
people who wander around from place to place causing disorder. With these vagabonds all around the

Cullen Name Design (2015)
One of the first projects in graphic design class was to create design from my name. I chose my
middle name, Cullen, because all of the letter could be square based, and I chose a color palette

Album Cover for The Stuff by Inspired By Aliens (2016)
I m taking AP Studio Art this year, and my concentration is album covers. Each album cover I ve
created is from a made up artist. This album s title is a nod to the movie The Right Stuff, and I sought
to continue the extraterrestrial theme through the color palate that I used. The text appearing from
behind the mountains seems almost like a spaceship or like the scrolling words at the beginning of
Star Wars. I Isolated sections of the photo and altered the colors of them individually in order to get
the effect I wanted, then chose a font that I felt fit the theme best.
All of my albums are designed to work on mobile devices rather than 12 vinyl covers because the
music industry and market is overwhelmingly digital. Because of this, I use fonts that work at small
sizes and go for simple, graphic covers as opposed to the more intricate designs that tend to work very
well in larger formats.

Resistance to Change in the Workplace
Understanding and Coping with Change: Change is a process that occurs everywhere though many
people are generally reluctant to embrace the concept. One of the major reasons for difficulties in
accepting or embracing change is that humans are creatures of habit and adhere to daily routines.
Consequently, when change occurs, people s activities and thought patterns are interrupted. While
understanding and coping with change is an important part of daily life, embracing the concept is
relatively a difficult process for many people. Actually, this process is characterized by resistance to
change due to internal and external factors. Some of the major reasons why individuals are resistant to
change include self interest, lack of trust in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He expressed the uncertainty by arguing that the organizational change could not lead to the
accomplishment of the desired results. His concern over personal loss was demonstrated in his
preference for the existing mode of operation and organizational culture. He assumed that this change
could result in loss of the personal freedom he had while working through the existing mode.
Therefore, Robert Smith s resistance to change was caused by internal factors.
Overcoming that Resistance: The community based organization needs to develop an effective plan to
overcome the resistance to change as expressed by Robert Smith and other employees. This plan
should focus on addressing some of the major internal and external factors that contribute to that
resistance. The most appropriate strategy for overcoming that resistance would require the use of
Kotter s theory for change. Moreover, the plan needs to address the most common rationale for
resistance to change such as self interest, lack of trust in management, low tolerance for change,
differing assessments of the need for change, and lack of understanding (McVay, p.301). Based on
Kotter s theory for change, the first step in overcoming the resistance is to change is through
establishing a sense of urgency and compelling reason of the need for the organization to move

The Disreputable History Of Frankie Landau-Banks
Setting always plays a major part in writing. An work is based around a conflict, that s just how
writing operates naturally; and since setting manipulates the conflict in a story, everything can change
simply due to where it takes place. A great example of this is The Disreputable History of Frankie
Landau Banks , where the plot develops around the setting in which it takes place. Due to the fact that
The Disreputable History takes place entirely in a boarding school, the conflict can change
unpredictably because the characters lives revolve around Alabaster Preparatory Academy . The main
character, Frankie, is a sophomore in high school that struggles with the fact that she s a feminist.
Many teenagers struggle in daily social life that includes going to school, no doubt. Though,

Frankie that felt what nearly what every teenager would have felt in that situation: embarrassed. She
wished she hadn t broken this stupid rule. She wished Matthew would come and rescue her. Or when
she thinks: Why on Earth could she have done such a dumb thing? This is a fairly common example of
man vs society , it s also a sign of the panopticon theory (the feeling of being watched even though
you aren t). The setting of a crowded lunchroom is what illuminates this conflict, this is because she s
sitting alone, yet she s surrounded by a lot of people. Frankie thinks that there is almost an unseen rule
not to sit alone at a lunch table; yet she does it anyway and in result she feels embarrassed and

Identity In Lame Deer s Alone On The Hilltop
In Alone on the Hilltop, a young 16 year old named John Fire Lame Deer is beginning his hanblechia,
or vision seeking, to become a man within his Sioux tribe. A ritual that every boy in the tribe endures
before entering manhood: being isolated for four days and nights while fasting. During the ritual,
participants anticipate visions to guide them to their purpose. By the end of the ritual, the member is
expected to have evolved, with a new identity. Growing up, Lame Deer had always been taken care of
and supported. Though after his journey, this role inverses; now practicing a new life full of leadership
and liability. He aspires of becoming a medicine man, an honorable position within his community.
Before he can achieve this, he waits to have visions from spirits that guide him into his new life. In
Alone on the Hilltop, John Fire Lame Deer develops a fresh identity through a new perception of
where he stands individually, communally, and spiritually. Lame Deer begins his recollection of his
hanblechia by discussing how no child is ever left unattended. Indian children are never left alone.
They are always surrounded by grandparents, uncles, cousins, relatives of all kinds, to fondle the kids,
sing to them, tell them stories. If the parents go someplace, the children go ahead (96). Everything
being done together, this his is first time alone atop the hill. He has been dependent on his community

English Language Learners For My Assessment
Profile
The intended English language learners for my assessment would be primary aged students who are at
the beginning level, according to WIDA. Primary aged students are students in kindergarten through
grade 2, and WIDA describes students as beginning if they (a) understand and speak conversational
and academic English with hesitancy and difficulty, (b) understand parts of lessons and simple
directions, and (c) are at a pre emergent or emergent level of reading and writing in English,
significantly below grade level. (http://ell.dpi.wi.gov/sites/default/files/imce/ell/pdf/elp levels.pdf).
Although my students would be young, they could be classified as significantly below grade level if
they cannot identify letters and perform poorly on the kindergarten screening and running records.
Most ELL students at this age are not literate in their native language, which may make learning
English literacy more difficult.
Rationale
The test I designed I could currently use with some of the students in my classes. I teach kindergarten
and first grade English Language Arts and Social Studies and we have a moderate number of
immigrant students whose parents do not speak English. Although we do not have an ESL program,
our bilingual program draws many native Spanish speaking students to our school because their
families want them to maintain their Spanish. We also have immigrant students from other countries,
such as Middle Eastern and African countries. This exam covers some of

Media Opinion On Public Opinion
Question 2 Public opinion is combination of elite opinion, media opinion, and mass opinion. Elite
opinion is the informed opinions of knowledgeable experts that may be presented in blogs, university
studies, or academic think tanks. Media opinion is often associated with public opinion; however, a
large information gap is present as media opinion is often biased as it is funded by corporate
sponsorship. This trend is common during elections, where corporately backed candidates are often
portrayed favorably in debate or campaign analysis. The third aspect of public opinion is mass
opinion. Mass opinion is generally measured by polls or consumer trend analysis to make educated
assumptions about the opinions and preferences of the masses. Publications are quick to state that
public opinion supports one side of a policy issue or a social topic. There are a number of complexities
that arise when gauging public opinion. Can public opinion actually be effectively measured? Is public
opinion constant? Does the public effectively understand the question at hand? These issues
commonly arise when discussing what the public opinion actually is. The main difficulties of
analyzing public opinion is that it is fairly elastic, often changing depending on reactions to current
events, it is difficult to collect credible information to make effective assumptions, and the public is
often not informed well enough or does not understand the true complexities of various policy issues.

Power In One Flew Over The Cuckoo s Nest
Ken Kesey uses motifs of machinery to portray that abuse of power is detrimental, it forces one to
conform, and causes a loss of individuality in society. The central metaphor of machinery compares
Nurse Ratched s working style to mechanical processes, displaying that she abuses her power by
manipulation.( laeadin) So she really lets herself go and her painted smile twists, stretches to an open
snarl, and she blows up bigger and bigger, big as a tractor, so big I can smell the machinery inside the
way you smell a motor pulling too big a load (Kesey 5).Within the ward she has a heightened sense of

Incorporation Of Digital Game Based Learning For Our...
Thank you for your consideration to allow the incorporation of Digital Game Based Learning for our
students here at XXXXX middle school. With careful planning, delivering, and administration of
digital games, we may not only augment the development of student citizenship, yet also the culture of
the school and surrounding community. It is with hope that my suggestions will lead to a fulfilling
learning experience for students.
The game I am proposing for our school s curricular development is the Learning Games Network s
Quandary; a game that has received some notoriety in recent years. The game is set in a fictional
world 32 light years away and the gamer s avatar is a leader of a growing space colony named Braxos.
The task of the leader is to make decisions dealing with sustainability within conflicts among the
colony s inhabitants. However, the avatar consults the student gamer as the delegate from Earth to
assist in listening to the thoughts, opinions, and practical facts of the colonists in order to make
informed decisions about certain scenarios on behalf of the survival of the colony. These scenarios
include dealing with predators native to the ecosystem that threaten local food resources, issues with
water supplies, and even favoritism through clothing that highlight concerns about social class and
identity. In essence, the preceding description of how to delegate is the true beauty of the Quandary
learning experience. It causes student gamers to critically think

Jazz Music And The Musicians Essay
Jazz music and the musicians played a pivotal role in World War II. During the war there were a lot of
patriotic songs, as well as songs about military life, humor, and religion written in the Jazz genre.
There were also numerous artists that went overseas to perform. One of these artists was Glen Miller,
who raised soldier s morale by modernizing the army band. Jazz was also used as a type of weapon in
the war. During the war there were a lot of patriotic songs, as well as songs about military life, humor,
and religion written in the jazz genre. A few patriotic songs are The House I Live In (That s America
To Me), There s A Star Spangled Banner Waving Somewhere, America Patrol, and This IS Worth
Fighting For. One Patriotic song written by Iviring Berlin has an unusual history. It was originally
written for a military show in 1918, but was put aside when they decided that they did not want to use
it for the show. It was later pulled out of storage in 1939 by Kate Smith. Kate s version of the song
became the standard version that was used by everyone. Another one of Iviring Berlin s songs that was
written for the military show but never used was This Is The Army, Mister Jones. This song was
resurrected for a different military show called This Is The Army. This song turned out to be a
Broadway hit as well as being independently popular. The show traveled where it earned two million
dollars for the Army Emergency Relief Fund. Religion also found a place in

Duck Death And The Tulip Essay
Duck, death and the tulip is a children s book that delicately explains death. Death had been
personified to help children comprehend the concept of passing away. This picture book is about how
Death follows the Duck everywhere and anywhere the Duck goes. The objectified version of Death
does not cause the Duck any harm or lead the Duck to death, however Death follows the Duck
because death is unexpected. Although Death is objectified in this book, it s the conscience that allows
the thought of death to linger in one s life because the Duck was illustrated to be surprised when Death

Because death is such a complex subject for children, Duck, Death and the Tulip is able to explain
death in a lighthearted manner without excessive emotions. Furthermore, the story was able to explain
the concept of death without going into too much detail of what happens after death and other beliefs.
This allows children to interpret it in their own ways while comprehending the theme of the story. In
continuation, I believe the illustrations affect reception because the simplistic contrasting images
could have various interpretations and it is up to the person reading the content on how they would
like to interpret each picture. However, the theme affects popular appeal because death as a theme for
a children s book is a sensitive topic for children to comprehend. Therefore, guardians and adults may
be slightly surprised when they initially read this book because of the straightforwardness of the
content. Overall, Duck, Death and the Tulip is a children s book that effectively expresses on the topic
of death. The simplistic art within every page of the book is accompanied by a contrasting symbol
which allows further interpretations of the context. It is no surprise that this book has some
unconventional drawings, however it will allow children to understand death in an appropriate setting.
Lastly, reading this book does not lead to shocking discoveries or underwhelming boredom because

The Attachment Theory Essay
The Attachment Theory
The attachment theory talks about the early significance and developments of attachment between
infants and their mothers. Attachment can be defined as intense, emotional ties to specific people.
The attachment process can be divided into pre attachment, discriminate and indiscriminate and
multiple attachment phases.
The development of specific attachment is shown through separation anxiety.
The most influential versions of this approach was probably that of Sigmund Freud, who believed that
the infants upset at the mothers absence is based on the crass fear that bodily needs would now go
unsatisfied.
The British psychiatrist john bowlby called this the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The strange situation is used to classify the baby s basic attachment to the mother into three main
types: anxious avoidant, securely attached and anxious resistant.
The crucial feature determining the quality of attachment is the mother s sensitivity.
Bolwby suggest that such a built in fear of the unfamiliar has a simple survival value. Infants who lack
it are more likely to stray away from their mothers and will be more likely to go and perish.
Bolwby suggest that the first five years of life are crucial to the Child s later development. He
highlighted four majors systems in infant behavior, whereby he stated that children use all four of
these systems in their interaction with their environment and the people around them.
He stated what is known as the continuity hypothesis, which is the idea that a damaged infancy leads
to the idea of a damaged childhood which in turn leads to a damaged adulthood.
Infants who do not have any sort of attachments whatsoever could have some everlasting effects on
their adulthood. Researcher s tizard and Hodges 1978 concluded from their research that children may
be deprived of their opportunity to form personal attachments if they are raised in an institution.
Also, there is evidence that disruption in the family home during childhood could affect how the

The Dead By James Joyce Meaning
After reading The Dead by James Joyce, I came to the conclusion that the title of the short story has a
very deep meaning, both literally and figuratively. The reason for which I believe the title has a literal
meaning is that the author briefly mentions about some secondary characters, who in one way or
another, are part of the story but are no longer alive. Some of these characters are the following: Pat
Morkan (Brother of Kate and Julia), Ellen Morkan Conroy (Mother of Gabriel), T.J Conroy (Member
of the Dublin Port and Docks Board, and Father of Gabriel), Patrick Morkan (Owner of a starch mill,
and Father of Kate and Julia), and, especially, Michael Furey (Gretta s first lover who died for the love
of her). At the same time, I consider

Should hospitals test pregnant women for drug use without their consent?
Hospitals, during their normal course of treatment should test pregnant women for drugs of any type,
whether legal or not. Of course, the patient should be informed of such testing, but consent should not
be required. Findings of illegal drugs should be used to educate and treat the mother for an addiction
rather than informing law enforcement of such an activity.

drug use should be left to law enforcement. An exception to the rule is if the illegal activity is

This is why hospitals must use drug abuse information gained by testing to educate and treat the
addiction. The good that such education and treatment not only benefits mother and child but ripples
throughout the entire community and economy.
Hospitals also have a duty and obligation to protect the mother s right to privacy. Releasing medical
and treatment information without their consent is a violation of HIPAA, Health Insurance Portability
and Accountability Act, and of the Privacy Rule that protects mother s personal health information
from being disclosed, again without consent. Hospitals are to be in compliance of the law but not to
enforce it. That should be left to law enforcement to handle. Disclosure to law enforcement without
consent may also be a violation of the mother s 4th Amendment right, the right against unreasonable
search and seizure. Again, the mother has the right to privacy; to be secure in their persons, houses,
papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures ... , in this case, their medical
information and treatment.
Speaking of law enforcement, law enforcement may prosecute the mother of a crime that has not been
directly witnessed. Use of illegal drugs is not being condoned, but law enforcement must have first
hand knowledge of it to act. Prosecution may serve as a disservice as well. Imprisonment and

The Spread and Localization of Buddhism and Islam into...
The spread of religion first began through contact with neighbouring countries which gradually
expand throughout the years. Buddhism and Islam are one of the most widespread religions across
Southeast Asian countries like Burma, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.
Trade merchants and imperial support of the religion were major factors in the facilitation and
localization of the spread of Buddhism and Islam within Southeast Asia. However, there were also
limitations presented which hindered the development of each religion in within their countries as
introduction of newer religions and changes to political and imperial power would have affected the
progression to become fully localised pre 1800s.

Southeast Asia. Asoka, as mentioned, was a big supporter of Theravada Buddhism and was deemed an
exemplar for future Buddhist emperor to establish Buddhism as a part of the country s traditions and

teachings of religion (Swearer 1997, 89). Through his persistent method of conquest, he influenced

Chiang Mai, Thailand during 11th and 15th century respectively to position Buddhism as a part of
their reign, conquest and authority (Swearer 2010, 71). This significantly enabled the localization of

Career Choice As A Management Consultant
This report will be based on my career option, which will be the career choice as a Management
Consultant. After starting my designated Management degree I started to read about and take an
interest in the career path as Management Consultant, I am more interested in the Strategy side to the
role, as there are many different types of Management Consultants. I mostly read about the role online
and I would also talk to my cousin who is a Management consultant for Ernst Young. I shall compare
management consulting to strategy consulting within the report. A Management Consultant is a
consultant that is employed to resolves issues within a company and to maximize profits and to create
more value within the firm. As a Management Consultant you do not to the same type of job that
often, the consultant usually spends up to 6 months within a company and then moves on to another

Job Description
The definition of a Management Consultant role is to use their business skills to provide objective

A Room with a Viewpoint: Using Social Norms to Motivate Environmental Conservation In Hotels

the efforts towards building the research conducted while attempting to theorize a study involving
environmental conservation among hotel patrons and the reuse of towels. The purpose of this essay is

The hypotheses was clearly stated and used to provide the initial theoretical framework. The
hypothesis was also stimulated from an earlier study that stated that a larger hotel chain conducted a
similar study using different variables with a common purpose. [ (Trochim, 2006) ] Even though the
study indicated that there was a previous study conducted, this study did not provide any relevant
feedback on the variables used or the specific findings of the earlier study. The earlier study could
have provided more insight to differentiate or to provide similarities to justify the purpose of the
newer study. The hypotheses was clear but there could have been more detail to support the
background the generated the question. The question in its current state over simplified the question
and the purpose for the study. [ (Goldstein, 2008) ] The study provides a basic research design by
incorporating the randomized experiment and/or quasi experiment. [ (Trochim, 2006) ] The study
provided an experiment that identified a causal effect. In the first experiment, the towels were reused

I can not imagine a world without my mother. But without St. Jude I would be on this planet to
imagine anything at all.
This past summer, I, along with my mother and father, travelled to St. Jude Children s Research
Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. My mom had been invited to participate in the St. Jude For Life
Study because when she was around six to eight years old, she had a form of leukemia called Acute
Lymphoblastic Leukemia. This particular study is to help all present and future St. Jude patients and
help to research for a cure. While there, I saw first hand how cancer can affect a family. You can just
see all of the stress, the worry, the exhaustion, the tiredness, the fear, and the tears on the families and

Comparing Cyrus The Great Of The Persian Empire And...
Paper #2 The Ancient Roman Poet, Virgil, once wrote, They can conquer who believe they can. King
Cyrus the Great of the Persian Empire and Emperor Caesar Augustus of the Roman Republic/Empire
are leaders whose conviction in their rights to power establish the unwavering support of the people
they lead. King Cyrus the Great rises to the throne of an expansive Persian Empire. As King, he brings
virtually the entire Near East under his control. In 539, claiming to be under the divine right the
Babylonian God Marduk, peacefully conquers Babylon and drives out Nabonidus, the last of the Neo
Babylonian kings. Cyrus the Great produces a clay cylinder denouncing Nabonidus as an impious
oppressor of the people of Babylonia, and of low born origins, making him lesser than Cyrus s kingly
heritage. Cyrus portrays himself as having been chosen by the chief Babylonian God Marduk to
restore peace and order to the Babylonians. It concludes with a description of how Cyrus repairs the
city wall of Babylon and leaves his cylindrical legacy beneath the wall forever. The Res Gestae Divi
Augusti is an autobiography of the achievements of Octavian, who is later named Augustus by the
Senate, during his reign from 44 BC to 13 CE. Following his death, this text is displayed in front of
his Mausoleum and copies are distributed to Roman provinces throughout the empire. The
achievements listed by Augustus provide an insight into the thoughts and beliefs of ancient Romans

Dante’s Inferno in Milton´s Paradise Lost
Many arguments have been made that Dante s Inferno glimmers through here and there in Milton s
Paradise Lost. While at first glance the two poems seem quite drastically different in their portrayal of
Hell, but scholars have made arguments that influence from Dante shines through Milton s work as
well as arguments refuting these claims. All of these arguments have their own merit and while there
are instances where a Dantean influence can be seen throughout Paradise Lost, Milton s progression of
evil and Satan are quite different from Dante. Dante s influence on Milton is noted by many scholars
and is very apparent in several instances throughout Paradise Lost, however, Milton shows a
progression of evil through his own vision of Satan and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In his article, he discusses many of the authors previously mentioned such as Samuel, Hollander, and
Gurteen, and develops his own ideas about Milton s use of Dante s form of punishments. He makes
note of the fact that when Satan returns to Hell after successfully tempting Eve...he hears a universal
hiss as he and his crew transform into serpents which is clearly an allusion to that which the thieves
undergo in Cantos 24 and 25 of Dante s Inferno.
Other scholars agree that there is some flicker of Dante through Paradise Lost but argue that, although
there are instances where it seems clear of the influence, Milton and Dante s versions of Hell and
Satan are quite different.
In S. Humphreys Gurteen The Epic of The Fall of Man: A Comparative Study of Caedmon, Dante and
Milton he says, the influence of Dante s strong imagination, however, is evident throughout Paradise
Lost. It is not plagiarism, it is not imitation, it is the effect that must necessarily follow from the
contact of one powerful imagination, strong intellect, and deeply erudite mind, on that of another, in
many respects, his equal. (Gurteen, 383) While he explores

Lord Of The Flies Allusion Analysis
Human has the humanity which is a combined of heart, peace, care, help, and love. And thinking make
us different from other living organelles, thinking a head of what would happen before do anything.
Human is a curious person but there are some smarter than others because they understand the
problem and try to find a solutions from different point of views. But what can stop us... what can
make us hate others or even killing each other in direct or undirect ways .
Lord of the Flies allusion to many things that help us to understand the story like the Garden of Eden.
The garden was similar to the island. Ralph said, This is our island. It s a good island. Until the
grownups come to fetch us, we ll have fun (Golding 35). At the beginning of the book, the boys had to
discover the island to know it, and some of them were naked because they were innocent and didn t
know much as an adult person. They didn t know if this is right or wrong. Adam and Eve knew
nothing about life, garden, themselves, and others. They had to discover and learn things. It would be
easier to learn the right things from the beginning, because it will reduce the consequences for the
person and society. In addition, Jack said, I ought to be chief, (Golding 20). Jack was similar to Eve
because she persuaded Adam to eat from the tree and Jack persuaded the kids to follow him and
supported him as a leader. They did it because the desire made them as a blind person who pretended

HOW TEACHERS CAN HELP CHILDREN LEARN A SECOND LANGUAGE EFFECTIVELY BY
THE TEACHING SATRATEGIES THEY USE IN CLASS
Student:
MONTANARI, JIMENA

PROF. SARA RACKER
2010
Abstract
Play, imagination and literature are considered essential for children s whole development. Research
shows that they are concerned with the development of abstract thought and creative use of
knowledge. This is one of the reasons why school curricula refer to the need to include imagination,
games and literature in teaching practices. The role of them in the language class is centrally related to
the ways in which people learn languages. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Through collective games children not only learn to interact and relate socially: they share toys,
interact and react according to what others are doing, they take turns, they learn to cooperate and share
work; but also provides the opportunity for using the language in a natural and spontaneous way.
The use of simple games presents frameworks which encourage children to practice interaction in
ways which are meaningful and also involves other cognitive skills as well as memorization, strategic,
thinking, visual observation, etc. by way of illustration, Vigotsky`s words (1933) can be quoted;
through play the child develops abstract meaning separate from the object in the world, which is a
critical feature in the development of higher mental functions . What is more, as a consequence leisure
activities help children build up communicative abilities through the interactive skills they are
developing.
Games are not simple activities. They are tasks in that they are holistic. As Samuda and Bygate (2008)
point out: holistic activities involve the learner in dealing with the different aspects of language
together, in the way language is normally used , that is to say, tasks require children to use phonology,
grammar, vocabulary and discourse features integratelly.
Not all games can be considered rich for children s linguistic development in a class. According to
Lewis and Bedson (1999), the following categorization is useful

Theme Of The Boy In The Jacket By Gary Soto
Elementary school is a big step, especially getting ready for middle school. For example, if one is
bitter towards someone, meaning jealous or angry, then their middle school years won t go very well.
They will go through being angry and it will make them focus on less important things rather than
their studies or sports. Similar to the boy in The Jacket by Gary Soto, he goes through his life being
jealous of kids that are happy or have good relationships and new clothes. The boy does not like the
jacket his mother got him and, does not appreciate it enough, even though it gets the job done. In other
words, one does not get what they always want, one has to appreciate what they get, this supports the
overarching theme and is represented by the symbolism, the setting, and the metaphors.
First, the metaphors in The Jacket support the theme because they help clarify that everything one has
is important. In the article the boy says, That green ugly brother who breathed over my shoulder that
day and ever ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Jacket did not like the jacket at all. He did not want to wear it to school because it made him look like
a weirdo and, he was embarrassed by the jacket and looked at it like it was an enemy. Then, the short
story says, I wanted to cry because it was so ugly and so big that I knew I d have to wear it a long
time. The boy in The Jacket thought it was just terrible, how could he live life knowing he has to wear
it. He is just complaining about it, he doesn t realize what good it will do to

1) Are the four components of Marriott s financial strategy consistent with its growth objective?
a) It is advisable to manage than to own as it is consistent with the growth strategy. In this manner,
mar riot can attract additional capital that gives it an opportunity to even invest more in the future,
share the risks with limited partners. The partnership can be of great benefit as it is a good way of
saving on taxes.
b) The decision to invest in projects increases the shareholders value of the company. This is
consistent with the growth and from the NPV criteria, positive NPV of projects increases the
shareholder s value.

How does Marriott use its estimate of its cost of capital? Does this make sense?
a) Discounted cash flows from the projects by the suitable division of a hurdle rate to get the net
present value which financially makes sense since risks among different divisions do vary.
b) Another method is through incorporation of the hurdle rate in the compensation policy which in
sense does not make sense since the rate does reflect risks of different activities and not managers
performance.
3. What is the weighted average cost of capital for Marriott Corporation?
Marriot Corporation measures the opportunity cost of the cost of capital for the investments using the
weighted average cost of capital for similar investments that have the same risk. The WACC for the
corporation is 11.89%.
a) What risk free rate and the risk premium did you use to calculate the cost of equity?
For the purposes of risk premium consistency, the arithmetic average was most applicable to the
historic US government bonds of 4.58% for the longest period because of its accurate estimate.
The risk premium used is 7.43% though it seems to be high, low free rate compensates it.
For the calculation of equity, beta is a necessity because there is no comparison that matches its
operational profile. Beta 1.17 ke = (4.58%+1.17) =

Doctor Assisted Suicide And Suicide
Doctor assisted suicide is a topic that has recently become a much larger debated issue than before. A
timeline put together by Michael Manning and Ian Dowbigging shows that prior to Christianity, doctor
assisted suicide was something that was tolerated, and was not heavily questioned (2). Yet, in the 13th
century, Thomas Aquinas had made a statement about suicide as well as doctor assisted suicide, and
his words shaped the Catholic teaching on suicide into what they teach today. Beginning in the 17th
century, Common Law tradition frowned upon suicide, as well as assisting in suicide, and the colonies
had adopted the Common Law principles. (2) In 1828, New York passed a law completely outlawing
the assistance of suicide, and made it to where whomever assisted in the suicide could be tried for
murder. In 1976, California became the first state to allow patients to withdrawal themselves from life
saving medicines, and this Natural Death Act was seen as a gateway to assisted suicide. (3 7) As
controversy about California s Natural Death Act increased, Pope John Paul II released a statement in
1980 which opposed to killing someone out of mercy, but allowed the increased use of painkillers (8).
Although, in 1994 Oregon passed their Death with Dignity act, and with it came incredible amounts of
backlash. Yet, in 2008 Washington state passed the same act to legalize doctor assisted suicide. (10 12)
In most people s lives, they will experience a moment of knowing death is near.

Prejudice And Racism In Ragtime By E. L. Doctorow
In the 19th century racism was a considerable problem. E.L. Doctorow presents the racism that was
occurring in reality through fictional Coalhouse Walker. He is also able to indicate to the reader the
effects of discrimination. In Ragtime, Coalhouse Walker stands as a symbol and an advocate for the
black people that want to go against the stereotypes that white people make about them. The world has
changed vastly since the 19th century especially in the matter of racism. Coalhouse Walker was a
professional looking black man who found love with a young woman named Sarah. Walker was not
the typical African American and it was very noticeable. Starting from when Walker got out of a new

himself into the world of virtual reality. He published a paper describing The Ultimate Display and in

he believed that computers should be more human compatible. The computer graphics industry later

demonstrating the use of a light pen to draw images on a computer screen. In 1966, Sutherland also
developed the first computer based head mounted display (HMD) (An explanation). With this device,
users were able to navigate through and experience the virtual world as we do in the real world by

History of Internet Essay examples
Without a doubt, the Internet is undergoing a major transition as it experiences a tremendous influx of
new users. Due to the anarchic, distributed nature of the net, we cannot even begin to enumerate the
population of the Internet or its growth. As more of the world s population moves on line, new
concerns will arise which did not confront the earlier generations. The new culture will demand
different resources, services and technology than the old generations expected and used. Already we
can witness a clash between the emergent culture and the entrenched culture. The largest conflicts
occurring now are about sharing resources, the impending commercialization of the net, and the
growing problem of computer crime.

It is only in the past year or two that we have begun to see the explosion of the new generation on the
Internet. Businesses have begun connecting themselves to the net, especially with the prospect of the
NSFNET backbone changing hands to permit commercial traffic. Public access nets run by
communities or businesses are springing up in cities all over the world, bringing in users who know
little about computers and are more interested in the entertainment and information they can glean
from the net.
Commercial providers like America Online and Compuserve are beginning to open gateways from
their exclusive services to the open Internet, specifically allowing their users to access email, netnews
and soon ftp and telnet services. The explosion of BBSs and the shared Fidonet software has brought
many users who were previously unable to get an account through a university to the world of email
and netnews. At this point, anyone with a computer and a modem can access these most basic
services. Several state s, such as Maryland, have begun efforts to connect all their residents to the net,
often through their library system. The city of Cambridge,
MA now offers access to the world wide web for short segments of time in its public libraries, and
even several progressive coffeehouses in the San Francisco Bay area and soon in the Boston area are
offering public net access.

Anwar Sadat and the October War
Various people have made significant contribution in defining the world order. Such contributions
sometimes take extremist viewpoints that almost draw parallel lines between varying ideological
standpoints that have informed world politics for many years. One such person is Anwar Sadat, the
former president of Egypt. President Sadat took over after the demise of President Gamel Abdel
Nasser in the year 1970, and led Egypt for eleven years. He attempted to reclaim the Sinai Peninsula
which had been taken and claimed by Israel. Sadat s plan to take back Sinai from Israel helped Egypt
to redefine its power and prestige in the world and to initiate negotiations for a peace treaty with
Israel.
In the plan to take back the Sinai from Israel and also to reinstitute and reestablish unity amongst the
Arab nations, Sadat employed diplomatic persuasion at its best. Several months prior to the 1976 war,
president Sadat spent most of his time creating ties with the Organization of African Unity (OAU),
and other summit talks. This plan proved successful as numerous African states, as well as the OAU,
supported Egypt and isolated Israel while the other summit conferences backed Sadat s plan to attack
Israel. With regards to other Arab States, Sadat did not have to employ much effort or persuasion as
most leaders of the nations were close to him. At this point, Sadat had managed to reinstate the
confidence of the Egyptian people, get rid of the Soviet Union, and yet again isolate Israel.

Classify Genetic Diseases
There are three categories that can classify genetic diseases. They are single gene disorders,
chromosome disorders, and multifactorial disorder or complex disease. Each of these categories are
different with and affect people in certain ways. Single gene disorders, also called Mendelian
disorders, are caused by a modification that occurs in one specific gene. An autosomal dominant
defect occurs when there is an altered gene and a healthy gene that are inherited. An example of this
type of defect would be Huntington s disease, an individual only needs one copy of this defective gene
on chromosome four to have the disorder. Autosomal recessive defect, is another type of single gene

A toothache may contribute to aggressive behavior. It can also interfere with eating and cause your
spouse to lose weight. If your loved one is not able to communicate well enough to let you know what
s wrong, he or she will have to suffer needlessly. You ll want to continue regular dental visits as long
as possible and follow the advice of your dentist on how to keep your spouse s mouth healthy.
Supervise Dental Care
Your spouse s teeth may be in good shape now, but they could deteriorate quickly as the disease
advances. That s because your loved one will lose the ability to clean his or her teeth well. Also,
changes in diet may contribute to tooth decay, especially if you have to entice your spouse to eat with
soft, sugary foods.
For that reason, you need to keep dental health in mind and make sure your spouse continues with
good oral hygiene. Initially, you ll want to supervise and encourage your spouse to brush. You may
need to provide step by step instructions to help the process along. Eventually, you may need to take
over dental care and brush your spouse s teeth or clean dentures yourself.

Homecoming In The Odysseus
When we take the time to look at The Odyssey there is a lot to examine. We can look at the different
themes or how the character interacts with one another, but one thing in particular I want to talk about
is homecoming . What are the different types of journeys that we see throughout The Odyssey that
tells about homecoming ? There are different characters throughout the poem that strive for this goal.
With this they have to interact with others throughout the poem to effectively accomplish their goal
and their journey. First, we look at what different types of journeys there are through the play. One
example, a very popular example, is Odysseus s journey home from war. After the war Odysseus is
stranded on an island The only way for him to get off is to build a boat and he gets this idea from
Hermes. Hermes is the God of communication. Odysseus wants to return to Ithaca. We could say that
every obstacle and every stop in Odysseus s journey is a new homecoming. Each of his encounters
with a God or Goddess is a new homecoming. But until Odysseus is actually home in Ithaca he will
not feel as though he is home. Odysseus goes through and endures a lot to get to his final destination,
but when going through this journey he realizes that the journey was the destination and that he was
really home all along. Through hid journey he was shown love and compassion. We can look at this
love as agape which is Greek for mainly love . Throughout his homecoming Odysseus find that

The Russo-Japanese War Summary
The Russo Japanese War was and has been a controversial topic between historians and major power
at its time. As the years went on to develop more wars and military conflicts, Russo Japanese War was
not completely forgotten but was in a way was misplaced in the folds of time. There have been many
books, articles and journals that were written in either giving detail about the war, how it occurred, or
the aftermath that it caused. This essay gives a summary of the book, The Russo Japanese War by
Christopher Martin, and discusses the comparison between the book and the journal article, Was the
Russo Japanese War, World War Zero? , while also contrasting the book with the article, Rewriting the
Russo Japanese War: A Centenary Retrospective, that talks mainly about the causes and effects the
were enacted by the outcome of the war.
In the book, The Russo Japanese War the author Christopher Martin retells the story of a major event
in history that not only caused change in the world, but also on the global stage of power. The Russo
Japanese War could be described as a conflict between a small island nation that was throwing away
the old, worn out feudal system and adopting the new and industrial ideas of modernity, against a
thought of major world power that was stubborn and held fast to its old ways of feudalism. The ending
result that came out of this war sent ripples throughout the world. By this, the world system of power
was literally turned inside out, the world

Example Of Natural Disasters
Natural disasters throughout the world are very frightening although there might be reasons to look at
them in a different perspective? How you may ask, seeing homes and hundreds of people panic for
their lives is all a natural reaction because we don t know what to do for the most part. However there
are other ways into viewing these disasters not only as that nature stops by a decides to struck a certain
place on earth but, that we have a partial responsibility in these disasters. We all influence how earth s
environments work and how we treat it eventually builds up and causes natural disasters. For the most
part literature can give you a whole different perspective on natural disasters.
In the book Black Nature Four Centuries of African American Nature Poetry by Camille T. Dungy she
gives many examples of natural disasters in cycle six. Take one of the poems named Earthquake Blues
by Ishmael Reed talks about an one of the most devastating disasters an earthquake. It s a short poem
as well as a story. How an earthquake was felt by animals before it struck, then it gets into details how
the earthquakes took the life of a little child in a nursery. However the most significant line in the
story was Mr. Earthquake Mr. Earthquake you don t know good from bad which made so much sense
to me. A natural disaster hits when it hits it doesn t know if it s causing something good or bad. Some
disaster happen where a few people can be hurt and others occur where many lives are at

Michelangelo s The Last Judgement Analysis
[1] In Christian theology, it is said that during the Judgement Day , the end of mankind, Jesus Christ,
the Savior of Mankind will depart from Heaven to take his Redeemed saints with him to Heaven on
high. As the intercessor between an omnipotent God and His flawed creations, Christ is often depicted
as a kind, loving peacemaker who understands the struggles of mankind. When given life in paintings
and artwork, He is often draped in white robes, seemingly connoting purity and peace, with a
countenance intended to convince viewers to come to Him for forgiveness and eternal joy. However,
Michelangelo took a dramatically different approach when he was commissioned to draw the fresco he
painted to adorn the altar of the Sistine Chapel. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Despite all of the piece s efforts to force viewers attention to Christ, His own face is turned away from
the line of sight of the viewer, unlike many contemporary works which focus on His face to show Him
as compassionate and loving. In the absence of loving kindness, he becomes a concrete, unmoving
agent of judgement. His features resemble vengeful and often unsympathetic Greek deities, a parallel
to illustrate how Christ s mercy will be unattainable during the Last Judgement. Through emphasizing
the finite nature of the audience s opportunity to repent from their sins and seek Christ, The Last
Judgement is able to simulate the sense of regret and hopelessness that the characters in the piece
currently have but are unable to do anything about. Thus, by using remorse, Michelangelo implies that
when the Last Judgement does come, the audience too would regret wrongs in their life that they
cannot fix now that Christ s forgiveness has expired. By creating this dark setting, Michelangelo
underscores the idea that all hope will be lost during the Last Judgement, implying that the audience
needs to align their lives with Christ before then. [3] Through the choice of artistic elements
Michelangelo includes, and more importantly chooses not to include, he is able to achieve a sense of
urgency in the work. Typically to underscore the compassionate love Christ is associated with, He is
shown with holes

The Mobile Autism Risk Assessment ( Mara )
The Mobile Autism Risk Assessment (MARA), conducted by Duda, Daniels, and Wall (2016), is an
autism spectrum disorder (ASD) screen used to classify those who are at high risk for ASD. ASD is
characterized by significant impairments in communicative abilities and social skills along with
repetitive or atypical behaviors (Duda, Daniels, Wall, 2016; p.1953). It is important to have screening
tools to help identify people at risk for ASD. Level 2 screening tools are used to differentiate ASD
from other behavioral or developmental conditions. This study wanted to test a new parent/caregiver

Serial Killer Essay
A main factor that differentiates serial murderers from other homicidal offenders is their reasons to
commit such horrendous crimes. Usually, homicidal killers kill because of complex conflicts between
families, mobsters, couples, and friends or because money problems. A psychokiller, I should make
clear, is not a regular murderer. A murderer has a vendetta, a nice specific personal thing against his
victim (Serial Killers). However, very different from normal killers, serial murderers are motivated by
compulsion and have the urge to slaughter other humans. Because of their sexual urges and their
desire to satisfy those urges, serial killers most of the time victimize individuals that they do not know.
Grover Godwin, a serial killer profiler, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dissimilarly to the movie Silence of The Lambs, in which Dr. Hannibal Lector is a very educated,
intellectual, and has an IQ of above average, nearly all of serial murders are uneducated or do not have
high school diploma. In Godwin s study, he reported that out of one hundred and seven serial
murderers only sixteen percent of them attended college and only 4 percent of them finished college
(Serial Killers). Although most serial killers might not have had formal education, they are clever
enough to not leave any evidence of their crime that can lead the police to them. Many of them are
exceptionally skillful in their presentation of self, so much so that they are beyond suspicions and thus
are difficult to apprehend (Serial Killers). Movies have distorted the idea of serial killers and created a
stereotype that serial killers have hockey mask on their faces and carry chain saws. However, the truth
is that serial killers are skilled at hiding their true selves and their terrifying thoughts, which help them
fit in with the society. These killers are very cunning that they lure their prey by making them feel safe
and secure but in reality they lead them into a trap. When they finally have their victims under their
control, they show their true selves and kill the victims with any available weapons (Serial Killers).
These acts are due to impulses and their desire for thriller and

The Impact Of Aircraft On The United Kingdom Of World War II
Aircraft have always played an important role when taking us to places otherwise inaccessible.
Whether it be an airliner with passengers or military carrier, air travel results in faster, more efficient
completion of task. The way we navigate the skies can make or break the success of business or
military operations. However, there are some dangers that exist. Being thousands of feet up in the sky
leaves us prone to catastrophic failure of a component or detection and engagement from defensive air
and ground forces. Safety is a must and as a result, advanced technologies, shaped and inspired by
renowned conflicts and events, such as radar jamming systems , were developed in order to insure the
safety of those on the ground and in the sky. At the dawn of World War II, the U.S. were in no way a
threat to any other country, yet were serving partially as a provider for its European allies. Have been
given freedom to do so by the Lend Lease bill, the U.S provided significant military supplies and other
aids mostly to the United Kingdom and other allies involved in the war against Nazi Germany. It wasn
t until December 7, 1941 when America joined the war after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. This
attack later led Hitler crazed Germany and Italy to join Japan in a declaration of war against the
United States. The United States were now cornered by forces from different sides of the world. Even
though Japan settled down after the U.S. bombings of Hiroshima and

Determinants of demand: 1. Price of the product * Single most important determinant * Negative
effect on demand * Higher the price lower the demand 2. Income of the consumer * Normal goods:
demand increases with increase in consumer s income * Inferior goods: demand falls as income rises
3. Price of related goods * Substitutes * If the price of a commodity increases, demand for its
substitute rises. * Complements * If the price of a commodity increases, quantity demanded of its
complement falls. Law of demand may not operate due to the following reasons: 1. Giffen Goods 2.
Snob Appeal (Veblen effect) 3. Bandwagon effect (Demonstration effect) 4. Future Expectation of
Prices (Panic buying) * Addiction * Neutral goods * Life saving drugs * Salt Demand curve focuses
on the relationship between the price of a good and the quantity demanded when other factors that
could affect demand remain unchanged * Money income of consumers * Prices of related goods *
Consumer expectations * Number and composition of consumers in the market * Consumer tastes

  • 2. The City By Dos Passos Ethos We discussed how New York is presented as a big, infernal, dynamic machine that systematically crashes the hopes of those who live in it. It is a metropolis filled with lights and colour moving in such a fast and chaotic pace that leaves its citizens behind. It was supposed to be the promised land for the thousands of immigrants who came and could get rich from scratch, the land of opportoonity (54); instead, it is the place where the American Dream comes to die and the people who inhabit it become disenchanted. A varied city with people from different nationalities, classes and backgrounds but all of them submerged in the incessant wheel of capitalism and industrialization .A fragmented and reifying city that alienates and reifies its inhabitants. We also examined the different cinematic techniques displayed in the book and its effect on the narration. The first one used by Dos Passos was montage, as the structure is very similar. It plays with space, time , fragmentation and contrast. The plots are intertwined and the stories and points of view juxtaposed to show how individuals are dehumanised by capitalism. The brief ... The entities of technology that new age corporate houses adopt is driven by the demands of the digital economy, making more effective spillovers in business operandi and maintaining the growth and adoption of services lean in their expenditures and fast in their turnovers. Looking to Cloud Computing, most businesses understand the need for stiffer competitive advantage and the market transitions that have affected margins considerably. The definition of Cloud, as the world has largely adopted is the US Government s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Definition of Cloud Computing, which states Cloud computing is a model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction. This helps prove that the differences between European and Japanese feudalism made limited government more likely to develop in the West because a contract limits what the lords and vassals could do. William, the king of English, said, I command you [the vassal] to summon all those who are under your charge......and bring ready with you those five knights that you owe me[.] 1 This helps prove that European feudalism was based on contract because when you owe someone something, it implies an agreement. I chose my middle name, Cullen, because all of the letter could be square based, and I chose a color palette inspired by of Eric Carle. Album Cover for The Stuff by Inspired By Aliens (2016) I m taking AP Studio Art this year, and my concentration is album covers. Each album cover I ve created is from a made up artist. This album s title is a nod to the movie The Right Stuff, and I sought to continue the extraterrestrial theme through the color palate that I used. The text appearing from behind the mountains seems almost like a spaceship or like the scrolling words at the beginning of Star Wars. I Isolated sections of the photo and altered the colors of them individually in order to get the effect I wanted, then chose a font that I felt fit the theme best. All of my albums are designed to work on mobile devices rather than 12 vinyl covers because the music industry and market is overwhelmingly digital. Because of this, I use fonts that work at small sizes and go for simple, graphic covers as opposed to the more intricate designs that tend to work very well in larger formats. One of the major reasons for difficulties in accepting or embracing change is that humans are creatures of habit and adhere to daily routines. Consequently, when change occurs, people s activities and thought patterns are interrupted. While understanding and coping with change is an important part of daily life, embracing the concept is relatively a difficult process for many people. He expressed the uncertainty by arguing that the organizational change could not lead to the accomplishment of the desired results. His concern over personal loss was demonstrated in his preference for the existing mode of operation and organizational culture. He assumed that this change could result in loss of the personal freedom he had while working through the existing mode. Therefore, Robert Smith s resistance to change was caused by internal factors. Overcoming that Resistance: The community based organization needs to develop an effective plan to overcome the resistance to change as expressed by Robert Smith and other employees. This plan should focus on addressing some of the major internal and external factors that contribute to that resistance. The most appropriate strategy for overcoming that resistance would require the use of Kotter s theory for change. Moreover, the plan needs to address the most common rationale for resistance to change such as self interest, lack of trust in management, low tolerance for change, differing assessments of the need for change, and lack of understanding (McVay, p.301). Based on Kotter s theory for change, the first step in overcoming the resistance is to change is through establishing a sense of urgency and compelling reason of the need for the organization to move ... An work is based around a conflict, that s just how writing operates naturally; and since setting manipulates the conflict in a story, everything can change simply due to where it takes place. A great example of this is The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau Banks , where the plot develops around the setting in which it takes place. Due to the fact that The Disreputable History takes place entirely in a boarding school, the conflict can change unpredictably because the characters lives revolve around Alabaster Preparatory Academy . A ritual that every boy in the tribe endures before entering manhood: being isolated for four days and nights while fasting. Primary aged students are students in kindergarten through grade 2, and WIDA describes students as beginning if they (a) understand and speak conversational and academic English with hesitancy and difficulty, (b) understand parts of lessons and simple directions, and (c) are at a pre emergent or emergent level of reading and writing in English, significantly below grade level. (http://ell.dpi.wi.gov/sites/default/files/imce/ell/pdf/elp levels.pdf). Most ELL students at this age are not literate in their native language, which may make learning English literacy more difficult. Rationale The test I designed I could currently use with some of the students in my classes. I teach kindergarten and first grade English Language Arts and Social Studies and we have a moderate number of immigrant students whose parents do not speak English. • 11. Media Opinion On Public Opinion Question 2 Public opinion is combination of elite opinion, media opinion, and mass opinion. Elite opinion is the informed opinions of knowledgeable experts that may be presented in blogs, university studies, or academic think tanks. Media opinion is often associated with public opinion; however, a large information gap is present as media opinion is often biased as it is funded by corporate sponsorship. This trend is common during elections, where corporately backed candidates are often portrayed favorably in debate or campaign analysis. The third aspect of public opinion is mass opinion. Mass opinion is generally measured by polls or consumer trend analysis to make educated assumptions about the opinions and preferences of the masses. Publications are quick to state that public opinion supports one side of a policy issue or a social topic. There are a number of complexities that arise when gauging public opinion. Can public opinion actually be effectively measured? Is public opinion constant? Does the public effectively understand the question at hand? These issues commonly arise when discussing what the public opinion actually is. The main difficulties of analyzing public opinion is that it is fairly elastic, often changing depending on reactions to current events, it is difficult to collect credible information to make effective assumptions, and the public is often not informed well enough or does not understand the true complexities of various policy issues. Thank you for your consideration to allow the incorporation of Digital Game Based Learning for our students here at XXXXX middle school. With careful planning, delivering, and administration of digital games, we may not only augment the development of student citizenship, yet also the culture of the school and surrounding community. It is with hope that my suggestions will lead to a fulfilling learning experience for students. The game I am proposing for our school s curricular development is the Learning Games Network s Quandary; a game that has received some notoriety in recent years. The game is set in a fictional world 32 light years away and the gamer s avatar is a leader of a growing space colony named Braxos. The task of the leader is to make decisions dealing with sustainability within conflicts among the colony s inhabitants. However, the avatar consults the student gamer as the delegate from Earth to assist in listening to the thoughts, opinions, and practical facts of the colonists in order to make informed decisions about certain scenarios on behalf of the survival of the colony. These scenarios include dealing with predators native to the ecosystem that threaten local food resources, issues with water supplies, and even favoritism through clothing that highlight concerns about social class and identity. During the war there were a lot of patriotic songs, as well as songs about military life, humor, and religion written in the Jazz genre. Jazz was also used as a type of weapon in the war. During the war there were a lot of patriotic songs, as well as songs about military life, humor, and religion written in the jazz genre. A few patriotic songs are The House I Live In (That s America To Me), There s A Star Spangled Banner Waving Somewhere, America Patrol, and This IS Worth Fighting For. One Patriotic song written by Iviring Berlin has an unusual history. It was originally written for a military show in 1918, but was put aside when they decided that they did not want to use it for the show. It was later pulled out of storage in 1939 by Kate Smith. Kate s version of the song became the standard version that was used by everyone. Another one of Iviring Berlin s songs that was written for the military show but never used was This Is The Army, Mister Jones. Death had been personified to help children comprehend the concept of passing away. This picture book is about how Death follows the Duck everywhere and anywhere the Duck goes. The objectified version of Death does not cause the Duck any harm or lead the Duck to death, however Death follows the Duck because death is unexpected. Although Death is objectified in this book, it s the conscience that allows the thought of death to linger in one s life because the Duck was illustrated to be surprised when Death had shown up. Furthermore, the story was able to explain the concept of death without going into too much detail of what happens after death and other beliefs. This allows children to interpret it in their own ways while comprehending the theme of the story. In continuation, I believe the illustrations affect reception because the simplistic contrasting images could have various interpretations and it is up to the person reading the content on how they would like to interpret each picture. However, the theme affects popular appeal because death as a theme for a children s book is a sensitive topic for children to comprehend. Therefore, guardians and adults may be slightly surprised when they initially read this book because of the straightforwardness of the content. Infants who lack it are more likely to stray away from their mothers and will be more likely to go and perish. He highlighted four majors systems in infant behavior, whereby he stated that children use all four of these systems in their interaction with their environment and the people around them. • 18. The Dead By James Joyce Meaning After reading The Dead by James Joyce, I came to the conclusion that the title of the short story has a very deep meaning, both literally and figuratively. The reason for which I believe the title has a literal meaning is that the author briefly mentions about some secondary characters, who in one way or another, are part of the story but are no longer alive. Some of these characters are the following: Pat Morkan (Brother of Kate and Julia), Ellen Morkan Conroy (Mother of Gabriel), T.J Conroy (Member of the Dublin Port and Docks Board, and Father of Gabriel), Patrick Morkan (Owner of a starch mill, and Father of Kate and Julia), and, especially, Michael Furey (Gretta s first lover who died for the love of her). Buddhism and Islam are one of the most widespread religions across Southeast Asian countries like Burma, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam. Trade merchants and imperial support of the religion were major factors in the facilitation and localization of the spread of Buddhism and Islam within Southeast Asia. This facilitated the increasing practice of Buddhism in Southeast Asia attributable to influences from foreign Buddhist merchants to the nations thus integrating itself into civilization and daily life (Adler and Pouwels 2008, 64). Imperial support played a major part in facilitation and localisation of the spread of Buddhism into Southeast Asia. Asoka, as mentioned, was a big supporter of Theravada Buddhism and was deemed an exemplar for future Buddhist emperor to establish Buddhism as a part of the country s traditions and lifestyle (Swearer 2010, 71). This significantly enabled the localization of Buddhism into Southeast Asia especially in countries like Thailand who remains supportive of Buddhism as declared by the Chakri dynasty from the end of 18th century onwards (Bowker 2007, 150). SARA RACKER 2010 Abstract Play, imagination and literature are considered essential for children s whole development. Research shows that they are concerned with the development of abstract thought and creative use of knowledge. This is one of the reasons why school curricula refer to the need to include imagination, games and literature in teaching practices. The role of them in the language class is centrally related to the ways in which people learn languages. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Through collective games children not only learn to interact and relate socially: they share toys, interact and react according to what others are doing, they take turns, they learn to cooperate and share work; but also provides the opportunity for using the language in a natural and spontaneous way. The use of simple games presents frameworks which encourage children to practice interaction in ways which are meaningful and also involves other cognitive skills as well as memorization, strategic, thinking, visual observation, etc. by way of illustration, Vigotsky`s words (1933) can be quoted; through play the child develops abstract meaning separate from the object in the world, which is a critical feature in the development of higher mental functions . What is more, as a consequence leisure activities help children build up communicative abilities through the interactive skills they are developing. Games are not simple activities. They are tasks in that they are holistic. As Samuda and Bygate (2008) point out: holistic activities involve the learner in dealing with the different aspects of language together, in the way language is normally used , that is to say, tasks require children to use phonology, grammar, vocabulary and discourse features integratelly. Not all games can be considered rich for children s linguistic development in a class. According to Lewis and Bedson (1999), the following categorization is useful

  • 42. Homecoming In The Odysseus When we take the time to look at The Odyssey there is a lot to examine. We can look at the different themes or how the character interacts with one another, but one thing in particular I want to talk about is homecoming . What are the different types of journeys that we see throughout The Odyssey that tells about homecoming ? There are different characters throughout the poem that strive for this goal. With this they have to interact with others throughout the poem to effectively accomplish their goal and their journey. First, we look at what different types of journeys there are through the play. One example, a very popular example, is Odysseus s journey home from war. After the war Odysseus is stranded on an island The only way for him to get off is to build a boat and he gets this idea from Hermes. Hermes is the God of communication. Odysseus wants to return to Ithaca. We could say that every obstacle and every stop in Odysseus s journey is a new homecoming. Each of his encounters with a God or Goddess is a new homecoming. But until Odysseus is actually home in Ithaca he will not feel as though he is home. Odysseus goes through and endures a lot to get to his final destination, but when going through this journey he realizes that the journey was the destination and that he was really home all along. Through hid journey he was shown love and compassion. We can look at this love as agape which is Greek for mainly love . Throughout his homecoming Odysseus find that ... As the years went on to develop more wars and military conflicts, Russo Japanese War was not completely forgotten but was in a way was misplaced in the folds of time. There have been many books, articles and journals that were written in either giving detail about the war, how it occurred, or the aftermath that it caused. This essay gives a summary of the book, The Russo Japanese War by Christopher Martin, and discusses the comparison between the book and the journal article, Was the Russo Japanese War, World War Zero? , while also contrasting the book with the article, Rewriting the Russo Japanese War: A Centenary Retrospective, that talks mainly about the causes and effects the were enacted by the outcome of the war. In the book, The Russo Japanese War the author Christopher Martin retells the story of a major event in history that not only caused change in the world, but also on the global stage of power. The Russo Japanese War could be described as a conflict between a small island nation that was throwing away the old, worn out feudal system and adopting the new and industrial ideas of modernity, against a thought of major world power that was stubborn and held fast to its old ways of feudalism. How you may ask, seeing homes and hundreds of people panic for their lives is all a natural reaction because we don t know what to do for the most part. However there are other ways into viewing these disasters not only as that nature stops by a decides to struck a certain place on earth but, that we have a partial responsibility in these disasters. We all influence how earth s environments work and how we treat it eventually builds up and causes natural disasters. For the most part literature can give you a whole different perspective on natural disasters. In the book Black Nature Four Centuries of African American Nature Poetry by Camille T. • 46. Michelangelo s The Last Judgement Analysis [1] In Christian theology, it is said that during the Judgement Day , the end of mankind, Jesus Christ, the Savior of Mankind will depart from Heaven to take his Redeemed saints with him to Heaven on high. As the intercessor between an omnipotent God and His flawed creations, Christ is often depicted as a kind, loving peacemaker who understands the struggles of mankind. When given life in paintings and artwork, He is often draped in white robes, seemingly connoting purity and peace, with a countenance intended to convince viewers to come to Him for forgiveness and eternal joy. However, Michelangelo took a dramatically different approach when he was commissioned to draw the fresco he painted to adorn the altar of the Sistine Chapel. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Despite all of the piece s efforts to force viewers attention to Christ, His own face is turned away from the line of sight of the viewer, unlike many contemporary works which focus on His face to show Him as compassionate and loving. In the absence of loving kindness, he becomes a concrete, unmoving agent of judgement. His features resemble vengeful and often unsympathetic Greek deities, a parallel to illustrate how Christ s mercy will be unattainable during the Last Judgement. Through emphasizing the finite nature of the audience s opportunity to repent from their sins and seek Christ, The Last Judgement is able to simulate the sense of regret and hopelessness that the characters in the piece currently have but are unable to do anything about. Thus, by using remorse, Michelangelo implies that when the Last Judgement does come, the audience too would regret wrongs in their life that they cannot fix now that Christ s forgiveness has expired. By creating this dark setting, Michelangelo underscores the idea that all hope will be lost during the Last Judgement, implying that the audience needs to align their lives with Christ before then. [3] Through the choice of artistic elements Michelangelo includes, and more importantly chooses not to include, he is able to achieve a sense of urgency in the work. Typically to underscore the compassionate love Christ is associated with, He is shown with holes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 49. Serial Killer Essay A main factor that differentiates serial murderers from other homicidal offenders is their reasons to commit such horrendous crimes. Usually, homicidal killers kill because of complex conflicts between families, mobsters, couples, and friends or because money problems. A psychokiller, I should make clear, is not a regular murderer. A murderer has a vendetta, a nice specific personal thing against his victim (Serial Killers). However, very different from normal killers, serial murderers are motivated by compulsion and have the urge to slaughter other humans. Because of their sexual urges and their desire to satisfy those urges, serial killers most of the time victimize individuals that they do not know. Grover Godwin, a serial killer profiler, ... Dissimilarly to the movie Silence of The Lambs, in which Dr. Hannibal Lector is a very educated, intellectual, and has an IQ of above average, nearly all of serial murders are uneducated or do not have high school diploma. In Godwin s study, he reported that out of one hundred and seven serial murderers only sixteen percent of them attended college and only 4 percent of them finished college (Serial Killers). Although most serial killers might not have had formal education, they are clever enough to not leave any evidence of their crime that can lead the police to them. Many of them are exceptionally skillful in their presentation of self, so much so that they are beyond suspicions and thus are difficult to apprehend (Serial Killers). Movies have distorted the idea of serial killers and created a stereotype that serial killers have hockey mask on their faces and carry chain saws. However, the truth is that serial killers are skilled at hiding their true selves and their terrifying thoughts, which help them fit in with the society. These killers are very cunning that they lure their prey by making them feel safe and secure but in reality they lead them into a trap. When they finally have their victims under their control, they show their true selves and kill the victims with any available weapons (Serial Killers). Whether it be an airliner with passengers or military carrier, air travel results in faster, more efficient completion of task. The way we navigate the skies can make or break the success of business or military operations. However, there are some dangers that exist. Being thousands of feet up in the sky leaves us prone to catastrophic failure of a component or detection and engagement from defensive air and ground forces. Safety is a must and as a result, advanced technologies, shaped and inspired by renowned conflicts and events, such as radar jamming systems , were developed in order to insure the safety of those on the ground and in the sky. At the dawn of World War II, the U.S. were in no way a threat to any other country, yet were serving partially as a provider for its European allies. Have been given freedom to do so by the Lend Lease bill, the U.S provided significant military supplies and other aids mostly to the United Kingdom and other allies involved in the war against Nazi Germany. It wasn t until December 7, 1941 when America joined the war after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
