Capnography and plethysmography are techniques for monitoring patients. Capnography uses infrared spectroscopy to measure the concentration of carbon dioxide in exhaled breath over time through a capnometer. This allows assessment of ventilation, perfusion, and metabolism. Plethysmography uses photoplethysmography and oximetry principles to noninvasively measure oxygen saturation in arterial blood through a pulse oximeter. Both techniques provide important physiological information to monitor patient status during medical procedures or illness.
