Motif Of Memento Mori
Memento mori motif in Baroque art
Tianyao Wang
Introduction:
Memento mori in Latin means remember that you have to die .[1] It s the medieval Latin Christian
theory and practice of reflection on mortality, especially as a means of considering the vanity of
earthly life and the transient nature of all earthly goods and pursuits. [2] In art, memento mori are
artistic or symbolic reminders of mortality.[3] For example, the Danse Macabre , also known as the
Dance of Death is as artist genre in the medium of paintings, frescoes and even in the musical settings
closely related to the Memento mori motif. Danse Macabre can be traced back to Late Middle Ages
which was about allegory on the universality of death. The visual example of Danse ... Show more

Above his heads , there is a very slim halo, which in the shape of a ring, with only half of it can be
seen ambiguously and the other half melted into dark. His head was almost bald with salt and pepper
hair on the temple. For Jerome frowned, we can see the wrinkles on his forehead.
Jerome s left hand took the edge of one open book and the right hand stretched naturally on the table
with a pen in his hand. For there is no additional paper under the pen, the pe should be used to make
notes and commentary on the book. On the left side of the table, we can see white cloth laying down
the table, above which two books overlapped upon. And upon the books, a skull is laid on it. The skull
symbol is the most common memento mori element. When it appears in the portraiture, it also reflects
person s own meditation and research on the mortality, death and the related staff.
This painting exemplifies many of the characteristics of Caravaggio s paintings, which is typical in the
Baroque period.
There are plenty of details which can illustrate Caravaggio s realism. The latter book on the left side is
broken in the bottom of the book back, where cover rolled up revealing the paper sheet groups inside.
The book head was in a color of brown while the page was totally white. The contrast of the color

Indonesia Is A Culturally Rich Nation
Introduction As the world s largest Southeastern Asian economy with a population of over 200
million, Indonesia possesses attractive prospects for business and enterprise. Alongside the election of
President Widodo who intends to increase foreign investment and improve infrastructure, this could
serve as an opportune time to get involved with the island nation. As the world becomes increasingly
globalized, the propensity to manage internationally becomes imminent. This guide is intended to
benefit the international manager in conducting operations in Indonesia. Its purpose is to provide the
manager with a comprehensive background regarding cultural practices, as well as an interpretive lens
and recommendations for best practice. Indonesia ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The mining, manufacturing, and agricultural sectors are the bread winners for Indonesia. In 2010,
United States President, Barack Obama visited Indonesia and commented that Indonesia is an example
of how a developing nation should embrace cultural diversity and democracy. In 2014 Indonesia s new
President, Joko Widodo, planned to end government corruption and improve the economic reform.
Indonesia currently struggles with extreme poverty, inadequate infrastructure for the rapidly growing
nation, and economic and social reform issues. It has implemented a 20 year development social and
infrastructure revision plan beginning in 2005 and projected to end in 2025. The Land Indonesia is the
world s largest archipelago and is the fourth most populous island in the world. There are a total of
17,508 islands and nearly 6,000 islands remain uninhabited. It is nearly three times the size of Texas.
The U.S. is five times the size of Indonesia. There are five large islands that include: Java, Sumatera,
Papau, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi. Although, Bali and Komodo islands are more well known to
tourists. The country can be observed in two parts: Western and Eastern. The western side is where
over 80 percent of Indonesia s total GDP is obtained and the western side is located near Malaysia and
Singapore. The eastern side is more remote and less densely populated. Indonesia s natural resources

The Effect of Audio Multitasking and Visual Multitasking...
Multitasking is an idea that many people believe saves time and helps complete tasks in a shorter
amount of time. However, theory suggests that by doing the same type of multitasking tasks, it would
be too strenuous to remember what you just did since both activities were almost the same. This
research paper aims to evaluate how the same type of multitasking affects the memory of humans.
Data from twenty seven people were collected in which they had to perform two types of multitasking
activities and take a test to see how much they could remember. Results show that most participants
scored lower test scores on the audio multitasking test compared to the visual multitasking test and
that the female participants obtained a test average ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Moreover, performance on individual tasks may suffer such that errors are made and overall
productivity is diminished. (para. 2) also in 2009 Ophir, Nass, and Wagner advised, Moreover,
chronically high multitaskers were more readily distracted by both irrelevant external stimuli and
recently activated internal representations during singular task performance. Overall, people are more
easily distracted if they tend to multi task often.
Many scientists dispel the idea that multitasking is in fact an efficient way of getting things done. For
example, in a study conducted by Clapp, Rubens, Sabbharwal, and Gazzaley (2011) concluded that,
multiple tasks increase task difficulty/complexity, resource capacity limitations, increased crosstalk
conflict, and greater bottleneck processing limitations. This shows that there is a plethora of research
done to prove the ineffectiveness of multitasking. Yet research done in 2013 by Shih reveals,
behavioural and brain research suggests that multitasking is challenging and often stressful and
unproductive. However, most multitasking research observes participants conducting two cognitive
tasks that do not involve media per se (except that tasks are often computerised) This reveals that most
multitasking occurs with the use computers or technology however, many test subjects and
experiments lack that certain

ABSTRACT: Diamond Foods is America s largest walnut processor specializing in processing,
marketing, and distributing nuts and snack products. This real world case presents financial reporting
issues around the commodities cost shifting strategy used by Diamond s management to falsify
earnings. By delaying the recognition of a portion of the cost of walnuts acquired into later accounting
periods, Diamond Foods materially underreported the cost of sales and overstated earnings in fiscal

The Effect Of Ph Solution Of Feed Phase On The Removal...
Figure. 7. Effect of pH solution of feed phase on the removal efficiency of citric acid
Transport conditions: Feed phase: citric acid 10 2 M, pH 2 12. Stripping phase: deionized water,
pH=6.8. Membrane: 12.60 cm2 of surface area, Calix[4]resorcinarene (0.15 g/g mixture of polymers),
0.03 ml 2 NPOE/g mixture of polymers. Values obtained after 5 days of experimentation.
3.8 Stability of PIMs
In this study, one PIM was reused, whereas the feed and strip phases were replaced after one cycle
with fresh ones in 5 experiments and each experiment lasted from 4 days. As observed in Fig. 8. The
initial flux of PIM shows a gradual decrease with increasing of cycle s reuse, which may be caused by

Conclusion
In this study, a polymer inclusion membrane was prepared and succevally applied for the removal of
citric acid from synthetic wastewater. The mixture of CTA and CA was found to be the optimum base
polymer for quantitative transport of citric acid. Moreover, the nature of carrier especially alkyl chain
length, stirring rate, and pH of feed phase are also important factors affecting the increased rate of
citric acid transport. Hence, from results obtained it can be seen that the investigated
calix[4]resorcinarene are effective extractants for citric acid and that their extraction abilities depend
on the alkyl chain length of the substituent in the macrocycle. Choosing the appropriate length of alkyl
chain, very selective system can be designed. The excellent efficiency for the citric acid transport by
the proposed PIM system reveals its potential application for the selective removal, concentration and
purification of citric acid from different media.

The Edict Of Milan. Kincade Hughes
The Edict of Milan
Kincade Hughes
History Section 6
Mr. Allen
April 2, 2015 In 313 AD the two Emperors of the Western and Eastern part of the Roman Empire met
and made a decision that would change the faith of western Religion. In Milan, a city in northern Italy,
they agreed on a statement that was later published as a letter and became known as the Edict of
Milan. This letter was the turning point for Christianity and a key event for its rise to becoming the
leading western Religion. This essay analyzes the events that led to the Edict of Milan and the impact
it had on Christians in the Roman Empire, namely the legal, cultural, and economical effects, and the
long term consequences. The Edict of Milan was a letter sent by Licinius as a consequence of meeting
Constantine in Milan.1 The letter was written by Licinius but in Constantine s name as well.2 It was
sent to Governors in the Eastern Empire to inform them that Christians in the East now were allowed
to have the same rights as Christians in the West already had. The letter became known as the Edict of
Milan and was a proclamation that made Christianity legal.3 Throughout the early times of the Roman
Empire Christians were prosecuted and not treated well. They were used as scapegoats when things
did not go well. People accused them of cannibalism and immoral behavior to justify treating them
poorly. However, over time Christianity started growing, and as the communities grew stronger
Christians became

The Theory Of A Management Theory
A management theory is a collection of different ideas that are used to outline the general rules for
how a business or organization will manage itself (Business Dictionary, n.d.). Every organization uses
management or managerial theories as the foundation in which they use to implement, help increase
productivity, and service quality (Hawthorne, n.d.). An organization doesn t use just one theory or
concept when implementing their strategies but actually they use a combination of theories that work
best for their workplace, purpose and workforce (Hawthorne, n.d.). It turns into a mixture of different
theories that is blended for exactly what the organization needs. Not many organizations are going to
openly publish what managerial theories they use to keep their company going. It s not good to show
your hand of cards to your competitors. It only makes you weaker and they know what your game
plan is. So as an internal employee and based off what I know about the organization I work for, I m
going to analyze and theorize on the approach that State Farm takes based on what I know about their
internal culture and business strategies. State Farm has five different lines of business; property and
casualty insurance, life and health insurance, annuities, mutual funds, and banking products (State
Farm, 2015). State Farm was built on a collection of shared values that includes; quality service and
relationships, mutual trust, integrity, and financial strength (State Farm, 2015).

Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infection
Nursing research offers the scientific foundation for the practice of the profession. In order for nursing
to be at the forefront of knowledge generation and address societal issues and health care, nursing
research must be relevant to health and illness situations, scientifically rigorous, and readily
translatable into practice and health policy (Potempa Tilden, 2004). Catheter associated urinary tract
infections (CA UTIs), accounts for almost 40% of all nosocomial infections, which result in increased
morbidity, mortality, and costs and, it is one of the most common health care associated infections in

Focus on enhancing quality of care has exaggerated on a nationwide scale. Decreasing preventable
damages within the health care settings is being on focus furthermore. From this there has been an
immediate connection between repayment to quality through pay for reporting and pay for execution
programs. Around 25% of the hospitalized patients have an indwelling catheter in place (Saint,
Kowalski, Forman et al., 2008) and there is a 3% to 7% has the probability to get urinary tract
infections in such cases. The infection could cause the signs of bladder distress, trouble in urination,
and high temperature in such patients. Analysis shows that 48% of patient who has indwelling catheter
complains of pain from the catheter, 42 % experience inconvenience from the catheter and 61% found
that their daily activities are exceptionally constrained by these catheters (Saint, Lipsky, Baker,

Polio, or poliomyelitis, is an infectious disease that manifests as a variety of symptoms, the most
severe of which is paralysis which can lead to permanent disability and death. Some people show no
symptoms at all. Children who recover from polio at a young age may develop new symptoms later in
life ( CDC Global Health Polio What Is Polio?, n.d.). Polio was considered a disease of developed
countries for much of the 1900s. However, in the 1960s and 1970s, prevalence of polio in
schoolchildren in developing countries across the world was found to be much higher than in the
United States (Modlin, 2010). By 2000, polio has been mostly eradicated around the world, with the
number of cases having fallen by more than 99%. Today, there are only a few countries that still have
new cases of polio each year and the total number of reported polio cases is, on average, less than 100
each year ( CDC Global Health Polio Updates on CDC s Polio Eradication Efforts March 18, 2016,
n.d.). Vaccination exists for polio, with two forms currently in use. The live poliovirus vaccination is
more effective and widely used in endemic regions, while the inactive vaccination is used in areas
where polio has been eradicated (Modlin, 2010).

What Was The Impact Of Globalization In The Us
IMPACT OF GLOBALISATION IN THE UK CIRCULAR FLOW OF INCOME
The United Nations states that globalisation is a widely used term that can be defined in a number of
different ways. When used in an economic context, it refers to the reduction and removal of barriers
between national borders in order to facilitate the flow of goods, capital, services and labour...
although considerable barriers remain to the flow of labour... Globalisation is not a new phenomenon.
It began in the late nineteenth century, but its spread slowed during the period from the start of the
First World War until the third quarter of the twentieth century. This slowdown can be attributed to the
inward looking policies pursued by a number of countries in order to protect their respective
industries... however, the pace of globalisation picked up rapidly during the fourth quarter of the
twentieth century Globalization has expanded quickly in the course of recent years; the primary
helping variables are regularly highlighted as:
The quick extension in global exchange.
Enhanced exchange liberalization where there are currently less limitations on global exchange.
Significant worldwide capital streams.
Developing immediate financing by multinational companies in different nations .
Expanded global versatility of work and the related movement of individuals between nations.
The joining of national economies and developing association of national economies.

Five Key Concepts Of Psychoanalysis
Psychoanalysis was the name given by Sigmund Freud to a system of interpretation and therapeutic
treatment of psychological disorders. (McLeod, 2007) In particular, we present five key concepts on
psychoanalytic therapy: structure of personality, psychosexual stages, defense mechanism, anxiety,
and the unconscious mind. First of all we start off with the structure of personality, which consists of 3
systems: the id, the ego superego. Each and individual has their own functions such as the id, it starts
from a person who is at birth and driven by the pleasure principle. They will be out of awareness and
demand for something to be done. (Snowden, 2010, p.126) Adding on to the next system is the ego
that begins to develop after birth. It makes decisions, controls the actions and solving problem. Lastly

Rhetorical Analysis Of The Article Dear Fellow White People
During the 2016 Olympics, athletes have received plenty of spotlight in the media. But was every
media coverage the same for every athlete? In Valkenburg Dear Fellow White People op ed article, the
author employs juxtaposition, ethos, and rhetorical questions claiming that the idea of white privilege
is existent and people should no longer fail to acknowledge this.
Valkenburg juxtaposes similar incidents between white and black athletes to emphasize the idea that
there is white privilege being portrayed in the sports event. For example, Valkenburg mentions the
Ryan Lochte scandal, that happened during the Olympics, but he then encourages his audience to
imagine the same scandal but with an athlete of color. Soon we see the different diction he uses to
juxtapose these similar, yet different situations. Words that were used to describe Lochte were:
mellifluously , bro ,and Frat Bro version of Jason Bourne ; whereas the imaginary black athlete is
described as destructive and very disrespectful. He starts off by pointing out to the audience that ...

Valkenburg use of juxtaposition, ethos, and rhetorical question exhibits the idea that white privilege

An Analysis Of Martin Luther King s I Have A Dream
Every human in this world is promised to something from love to a better country.
Promises are to be true to happen, but sometimes those promises are broken and never to happen. An
example of a promise that did come true was to make racial justice. This promised was made by
Martin Luther King Jr. s in his speech, I Have a Dream. In his speech, he promised to make racial
justice for the reason that there was no freedom of racism. An example of a promised that did not
come true was the promised made by a leader of a socialist group, Jim Jones. People joined a socialist

Detection Of Brain Tumor Detection Essay
Abstract A tumor is the growth in the abnormal tissue of the brain which causes damage to the other
cells necessary for functioning. Detection of brain tumor is a difficult task, as there are various
techniques involved in it. The active imaging resource used for brain tumor detection is Magnetic
Resonance Imaging (MRI). It is necessary to use technique which can give the accurate location and
size of the tumor. There are various algorithms proposed for brain tumor detection, this paper presents
a survey on the various brain tumor detection algorithms. It gives the existing techniques and what are

I. INTRODUCTION A tumor is a mass of cell that is formed by accumulation of abnormal cells. The
complex brain tumors can be categorized on the basis of their origin, growth pattern and malignancy.
It can be detected as benign or malignant, benign being the non cancerous and malignant the

The diagnosis of brain tumor is difficult because of the diversity in shape, size and location in the
brain. Medical imaging helps in the detection of tumor, there are various techniques like MRI, CT

Authority Figures In The Film, Coach Carter
The film, Coach Carter directed by Thomas Carter, is based on the true story of a basketball coach in
Richmond, California. The basketball coach, Ken Carter, appeared on the news in 1999 when he
suspended his players from their basketball games because they cared more about basketball than their
grades. Through proper leadership, the players learned that it takes more than basketball to escape the
harsh reality of the inner city. They found that the right authority figures, proper ethics and academic
responsibilities will help them to defy the statistics of what happens to young men without proper
leadership. Majority of the players lacked leadership roles in the home. As stated in the movie, the
system is designed for these young men to fail. Coach Carter realized that there was a need for
discipline and he stepped up to the challenge. The system is designed for the players to fail because

Slaughterhouse-Five Vs Catch 22 Essay
SlaughterHouse Five Vs. Catch 22: Compare and Contrast Both of the books Slaughterhouse five and
Catch 22, written by Kurt Vonnegut and Joseph Heller respectfully, use the experiences of the authors
to mold their antiwar viewpoints. While both books are written with serious tones they also manage to
include comedy to support some points. Each book is different however with each Heller and
Vonnegut s writing styles. As you read the book you come to realize how war negatively affects the
soldiers involved through the stories of each protagonist in the books. Each book uses a non
chronological structure to tell the stories. In the beginning each book kind of skips about randomly
and creates their own kind of messes. The books both keep up with ... Show more content on

For example, the most ironic part of Catch 22 is the catch 22 itself. A catch 22 is defined as a dilemma
or difficult circumstance from which there is no escape because of mutually conflicting or dependent
conditions. You can see an easy example from just reading the description of the book. A man is
considered insane if he willingly continues to fly dangerous combat missions, but if he makes a formal
request to be removed from duty, he is proven sane and therefore ineligible to be relieved. What this is
pretty much saying is someone who wants to be discharged is sane and has to go on more missions but
someone who goes on these missions is considered insane. because people do not want to go to war
The number of flight missions to be flown before a soldier can be dismissed is raised. The reason for
this is because Colonel Cathcart wants to be promoted to a General. Just as Yossarian, the protagonist,
gets closer to the number of required number of missions, the number is raised. Slaughterhouse Five
actually goes farther than just using the non chronological structure by also writing in short chapters.
The chapters are comprised of short paragraphs that are divided into unrelated sections. Vonnegut uses
this unique structure because the way events are told to the reader is similar to how undifferentiated
schizophrenics think and communicate ideas which

Snow Flower And The Secret Fan Analysis
In the novel Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, by Lisa See, the role of women presented by the author
incorporates historical context of societal value and conventions, reveals the agonizing subjugation
necessary for life, and explores the subtleties of female power in a male centric world. Through
characterization, dialogue, and imagery, the meaning behind the story of two friends reveals itself. Set
in rural China in the early to mid 1800s, historical context plays a major role in defining the value
placed on women by their society. Seen from the beginning, a young girl in a family acts only as a
burden on them by being an extra mouth to feed and less valuable than a son. Young women at the
time were only given value based on who they married, whether they had sons, and if they followed
the conventions set before them. The main character, Lily states that her mother looked at her as a
temporary mouth to feed and a body to dress until I went to my husband s home (See 12). By setting
the stage of the time period, See defines the role of women as child bearers first, and servants to her
husband s family second. Despite protests to that idea in contemporary times, women then understood
their roles as being miserable so that their children may one day succeed. Pain and convention
controlled a woman s everyday life, such as, When a girl, obey your father; when a wife, obey your
husband; when a widow, obey your son (See 24). Women held the lowest status in the social

Persuasive Essay On A Flat Tax System
Wouldn t it be a perfect world if everyone paid their fair share of taxes? Shouldn t everyone have skin
in the game? For example, if the tax rate was 10%, then the person earning $10,000 per year would
pay $1,000 in taxes, and the person earning $100,000 per year would pay $10,000 in taxes. Does this
sound too good to be true? Many complain that our current tax system is broken and there has to be a
better tax system. During this last presidential campaign, the idea of a flat tax system was once again
discussed as an option by one of the candidates. Over the years, many bills have been introduced to
congress to change our tax system. Right now, Congress is debating on a new tax system. Our
President is pushing for change as he realizes the current system is not going to get the deficit down.
We may not see significant change this term, but it will be interesting to see how it all turns out. This
paper will discuss what is wrong with our current system, the possible solution of adopting a flat tax
system, the counter evidence of why a flat tax system is probably not the solution to our tax problem
and why this evidence is right. Our current system is very complex, not efficient, biased, and basically
not effective. Did you know the current tax code has over 9 million words? (books.google.com) (241
words) It s no wonder people want change. I think most would agree our current tax system needs
revised. We hear on the news how big corporations pay little in

How Did Clara Barton Discovered The American Red Cross
Clara Barton I may be compelled to face danger, but never fear it, and while our soldiers can stand and

because no matter what the consequence was she did what she had to do. Clara Barton is a giving and

I believe this point in time was very important because, Clara would risk her life in trying to help the
soldiers that were involved in the Civil War. The following points illustrate the importance of this
turning point in time: bravery, caring for others, and the unstoppability she had when it came to
helping others in need. Clara Barton impacted me because she has done many similar things in her
childhood that relate to me, and also she s one of the reason why I want to become a nurse. Clara
Barton did so many positive things in this world that didn t involve just caring and helping with the
soldiers. Clara maintained so many other interests in other fields like education, prison reform, women
s suffrage, civil rights, and even spiritualism. Barton inspired me so much not only in my career
choice but, also how her childhood was and how she was a shy child and came out to be an amazing
woman. Clara changed the view on many women by proving to them that a woman can do that same

The Failure Of The American School System
The source of the American school system s failure has much to do with the fact that it is simply
outdated. It was set up in the late 1800s and early 1900s in order to meet the rampant needs of
America s newly industrialized economy. Public schooling supplied factories with a skilled labor
force, and provided basic literacy to the masses, and it was the education that the vast majority of the
population received. The overall implementation of our current school system credits itself to
educational reformer Horace Mann, known as the father of American public schooling. Horace Mann
examined a broad range of various educational models before eventually putting into effect the
Prussian model. Designed by Frederick the Great, this model s aim was to create a system designed to
exercise ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was also the easiest and most economical way to teach literary skills on a large scale. Social
efficiency theorists began to enact this system during the early 20th century in an endeavor to
industrialize the educational process. Led by educators such as Ellwood Cubberley, they treated
education as a means of social engineering. Our schools are, in a sense, factories in which the raw
products (children) are to be shaped and fashioned into products to meet the various demands of life.
(Cubberley, 1917). Building upon the depersonalized monotony and rigorous hierarchy of the Prussian
system, they formed an industrial education model devised to mass produce millions of workers for
America s factories. These theorists believed that most of America s students were destined for a life
of menial, industrial labor. Thus, they designed a multi track educational system intended to categorize
pupils from an early age. While the best and brightest were tailored for leadership ranks, the
preponderance was confined to a tedious education of rote learning and task

Property Right Issues And Social Rights And Private Property
As the U.S. Constitution states, clearly in the takings clause of the Fifth Amendment, nor shall private
property be taken for public use without just compensation. Property right issues and political
momentum include increasing government regulation of private property, and supreme court
protections for private property are tightening. Societal goals are sometimes pursued through
government restrictions on the use of private property. Eminent domain state and local government
have the authority to acquire private property for public use while taking is an unconstitutional
government appropriation of private property rights. The example that was used in class was the city
of College Station vs. Brad Pitt. The city of College Station wanted to develop Brad Pitt`s property for
economic development. Brad Pitt had a property being considered for development, so he filed
claiming that the use of eminent domain as contemplated by the plan violated the state and federal
constitutions. The class was divided into two groups to debate over Property Right vs. Public Interest
trying to answer the question, which of them should win over the other?
Like one of my sources Property Right vs. Public Interest (2006) mentioned, there are so many ways
that private property takes a part of to solve problems that are the outcome of human collaboration.
Private property enables the development of social services, that is, care of those who are orphaned,
handicapped or ill. It also

The Emotional Scene In Act IV Scene IV, By William...
Many seem to see Act IV Scene IV as lighthearted and simple or even boring, but this scene is a truly
actually very complex scene due to some and carries some dark undertones. The spring setting directly
contrasts thewith tense discussions and dark themes of death and decay. This comes to a head when
Polixenes reveals himself, sentencing the Old Shepard to death, and Perdita to be horribly disfigured.
Throughout the scene, Polixenes actually seems like a mirror for Leontes s actions in the first three
acts. Overall, this scene is definitely more than meets the eye.
Act IV Scene IV, also known as the pastoral scene, opens with Florizel and Perdita, two young lovers,
talking. Florizel is excited for the sheep shearing festival they will be ... Show more content on

This entire speech goes against the tone of the scene, and of the last two acts in general. The king, it
seems, has taken a page right out of Leontes book; in a fit of rage, he sentences several people to cruel
fates. Autolycus takes this theme of death to the extreme when he tries to scam the Old Shepherd and
the Clown. He mentions how the Clown will allegedly be flayed and tortured in other horrible ways.
This scares the Shepherd and Clown so much that they gladly pay the thief to take them to

The 1906 San Francisco Earthquake Of 1906
The 1906 San Francisco Earthquake
Geologic Aspect
On April 18, 1906 at 5:12 a.m. an earthquake of an estimated moment magnitude of 7.8 hit
Northern California. High intensity shaking was felt stretching from Salinas Valley to Eureka on the
North Coast. The San Francisco earthquake of 1906 was one of the worst and most fatal earthquakes
in both California s and the United States history.
California, and thus San Francisco, lies on the San Andres fault. The earthquake was caused when this
fault suddenly shifted, with the rupture spreading for a total of 476 kilometres in northward and
southward direction. This fault is a continental transform fault, which forms part of the tectonic
boundary between the North American Plate and the Pacific Plate. (1906 Earthquake: How long was
the 1906 Crack? USGS Earthquake Hazards Program Northern California, Accessed September 3,
2006). 1 The distance of the fault is of about 1300 kilometres, which runs the length of California
from Cape Mendocino in the north to the Salton Sea in the south. Geologists have estimated that the
fault moved as quickly as 2.74 kilometres per second. The San Andreas Fault, the source of this
disaster, lies ten miles or deeper, at the meeting point of two tectonic plates, the Pacific and the North
American. The right lateral strike slip fault is characterized by mainly lateral motion in a dextral sense,
where the western plate (Pacific plate) moves northward relative to the eastern plate (North American

made living creatures which can lead to the foreshadowing of the creation of man.
God sits back and sees what he has made. He blesses the seventh day in which he has officially
finished his creations. He then makes man and places him in the Garden of Eden , where everything
he needs to survive has been given to him. Later on he decides that a man needs a partner so he won t

Strange Case Of Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde
Dr. Henry Jekyll in Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1886) seems to be an enthusiastic
scientist just as Shelley describes Victor Frankenstein. Though Victor Frankenstein reports his own
story to Captain Walton, Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is narrated by different points of
view, mainly from lawyer Utterson, a close friend of Jekyll and in charge of executing Jekyll s last
will. Thus, no background of Jekyll is provided. In fact, it is only mentioned that he lives in a splendid
home in 19th century London with multiple rooms and a laboratory, and that he has servants to his
dispose. When Utterson first meets Hyde, he is described as someone unnormal with evil hints. It is
described that his exterior generates feelings of disgust and even unease to other characters. Yet this

Hyde. In this way, Jekyll becomes monstrous himself as he wishes to pass on his evil parts into
another person. Jekyll s concoction is a threat to cultural morals and values as it enables someone to
set evil free. Consequently, there is no obligation and interest in adhering to any moral standards. In
the end, he is a split person, one half is represented by Jekyll and the other one by Hyde. Stevenson
used the different standpoints in the story to create the feeling that Jekyll and Hyde are two different
individuals: The Master Hyde, if he were studied, thought he [Utterson], must have secrets of his own;
black secrets, by the look of him; secrets compared to which poor Jekyll s worst would be like
sunshine. (Stevenson 22). Thus, Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a story where the line
blurs. As Hyde and Jekyll are one and the same person, the reader realises that they together are both
moral and immoral and both good and

  • 2. Motif Of Memento Mori Memento mori motif in Baroque art Tianyao Wang Introduction: Memento mori in Latin means remember that you have to die .[1] It s the medieval Latin Christian theory and practice of reflection on mortality, especially as a means of considering the vanity of earthly life and the transient nature of all earthly goods and pursuits. [2] In art, memento mori are artistic or symbolic reminders of mortality.[3] For example, the Danse Macabre , also known as the Dance of Death is as artist genre in the medium of paintings, frescoes and even in the musical settings closely related to the Memento mori motif. Danse Macabre can be traced back to Late Middle Ages which was about allegory on the universality of death. The visual example of Danse ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Above his heads , there is a very slim halo, which in the shape of a ring, with only half of it can be seen ambiguously and the other half melted into dark. His head was almost bald with salt and pepper hair on the temple. For Jerome frowned, we can see the wrinkles on his forehead. Jerome s left hand took the edge of one open book and the right hand stretched naturally on the table with a pen in his hand. For there is no additional paper under the pen, the pe should be used to make notes and commentary on the book. On the left side of the table, we can see white cloth laying down the table, above which two books overlapped upon. And upon the books, a skull is laid on it. The skull symbol is the most common memento mori element. When it appears in the portraiture, it also reflects person s own meditation and research on the mortality, death and the related staff. This painting exemplifies many of the characteristics of Caravaggio s paintings, which is typical in the Baroque period. There are plenty of details which can illustrate Caravaggio s realism. The latter book on the left side is broken in the bottom of the book back, where cover rolled up revealing the paper sheet groups inside. • 4. The Effect of Audio Multitasking and Visual Multitasking... Multitasking is an idea that many people believe saves time and helps complete tasks in a shorter amount of time. However, theory suggests that by doing the same type of multitasking tasks, it would be too strenuous to remember what you just did since both activities were almost the same. This research paper aims to evaluate how the same type of multitasking affects the memory of humans. Data from twenty seven people were collected in which they had to perform two types of multitasking activities and take a test to see how much they could remember. Results show that most participants scored lower test scores on the audio multitasking test compared to the visual multitasking test and that the female participants obtained a test average ... Overall, people are more easily distracted if they tend to multi task often. Many scientists dispel the idea that multitasking is in fact an efficient way of getting things done. For example, in a study conducted by Clapp, Rubens, Sabbharwal, and Gazzaley (2011) concluded that, multiple tasks increase task difficulty/complexity, resource capacity limitations, increased crosstalk conflict, and greater bottleneck processing limitations. This shows that there is a plethora of research done to prove the ineffectiveness of multitasking. Yet research done in 2013 by Shih reveals, behavioural and brain research suggests that multitasking is challenging and often stressful and unproductive. However, most multitasking research observes participants conducting two cognitive tasks that do not involve media per se (except that tasks are often computerised) This reveals that most multitasking occurs with the use computers or technology however, many test subjects and experiments lack that certain ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Conclusion In this study, a polymer inclusion membrane was prepared and succevally applied for the removal of citric acid from synthetic wastewater. The mixture of CTA and CA was found to be the optimum base polymer for quantitative transport of citric acid. Moreover, the nature of carrier especially alkyl chain length, stirring rate, and pH of feed phase are also important factors affecting the increased rate of citric acid transport. Hence, from results obtained it can be seen that the investigated calix[4]resorcinarene are effective extractants for citric acid and that their extraction abilities depend on the alkyl chain length of the substituent in the macrocycle. Choosing the appropriate length of alkyl chain, very selective system can be designed. The excellent efficiency for the citric acid transport by the proposed PIM system reveals its potential application for the selective removal, concentration and purification of citric acid from different media. Kincade Hughes The Edict of Milan Kincade Hughes History Section 6 Mr. Allen April 2, 2015 In 313 AD the two Emperors of the Western and Eastern part of the Roman Empire met and made a decision that would change the faith of western Religion. In Milan, a city in northern Italy, they agreed on a statement that was later published as a letter and became known as the Edict of Milan. This letter was the turning point for Christianity and a key event for its rise to becoming the leading western Religion. This essay analyzes the events that led to the Edict of Milan and the impact it had on Christians in the Roman Empire, namely the legal, cultural, and economical effects, and the long term consequences. The Edict of Milan was a letter sent by Licinius as a consequence of meeting Constantine in Milan.1 The letter was written by Licinius but in Constantine s name as well.2 It was sent to Governors in the Eastern Empire to inform them that Christians in the East now were allowed to have the same rights as Christians in the West already had. The letter became known as the Edict of Milan and was a proclamation that made Christianity legal.3 Throughout the early times of the Roman Empire Christians were prosecuted and not treated well. They were used as scapegoats when things did not go well. People accused them of cannibalism and immoral behavior to justify treating them poorly. However, over time Christianity started growing, and as the communities grew stronger Christians became ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. The Theory Of A Management Theory A management theory is a collection of different ideas that are used to outline the general rules for how a business or organization will manage itself (Business Dictionary, n.d.). Every organization uses management or managerial theories as the foundation in which they use to implement, help increase productivity, and service quality (Hawthorne, n.d.). An organization doesn t use just one theory or concept when implementing their strategies but actually they use a combination of theories that work best for their workplace, purpose and workforce (Hawthorne, n.d.). It turns into a mixture of different theories that is blended for exactly what the organization needs. Not many organizations are going to openly publish what managerial theories they use to keep their company going. It s not good to show your hand of cards to your competitors. It only makes you weaker and they know what your game plan is. So as an internal employee and based off what I know about the organization I work for, I m going to analyze and theorize on the approach that State Farm takes based on what I know about their internal culture and business strategies. State Farm has five different lines of business; property and casualty insurance, life and health insurance, annuities, mutual funds, and banking products (State Farm, 2015). Please use 6 8 references and include them in a separate reference page (750 1000 words). Polio, or poliomyelitis, is an infectious disease that manifests as a variety of symptoms, the most severe of which is paralysis which can lead to permanent disability and death. Some people show no symptoms at all. Children who recover from polio at a young age may develop new symptoms later in life ( CDC Global Health Polio What Is Polio?, n.d.). Polio was considered a disease of developed countries for much of the 1900s. However, in the 1960s and 1970s, prevalence of polio in schoolchildren in developing countries across the world was found to be much higher than in the United States (Modlin, 2010). By 2000, polio has been mostly eradicated around the world, with the number of cases having fallen by more than 99%. Today, there are only a few countries that still have new cases of polio each year and the total number of reported polio cases is, on average, less than 100 each year ( CDC Global Health Polio Updates on CDC s Polio Eradication Efforts March 18, 2016, n.d.). Vaccination exists for polio, with two forms currently in use. The live poliovirus vaccination is more effective and widely used in endemic regions, while the inactive vaccination is used in areas where polio has been eradicated (Modlin, 2010). This promised was made by Martin Luther King Jr. s in his speech, I Have a Dream. In his speech, he promised to make racial justice for the reason that there was no freedom of racism. An example of a promised that did not come true was the promised made by a leader of a socialist group, Jim Jones. Catch 22: Compare and Contrast Both of the books Slaughterhouse five and Catch 22, written by Kurt Vonnegut and Joseph Heller respectfully, use the experiences of the authors to mold their antiwar viewpoints. While both books are written with serious tones they also manage to include comedy to support some points. Each book is different however with each Heller and Vonnegut s writing styles. As you read the book you come to realize how war negatively affects the soldiers involved through the stories of each protagonist in the books. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, the most ironic part of Catch 22 is the catch 22 itself. A catch 22 is defined as a dilemma or difficult circumstance from which there is no escape because of mutually conflicting or dependent conditions. You can see an easy example from just reading the description of the book. A man is considered insane if he willingly continues to fly dangerous combat missions, but if he makes a formal request to be removed from duty, he is proven sane and therefore ineligible to be relieved. What this is pretty much saying is someone who wants to be discharged is sane and has to go on more missions but someone who goes on these missions is considered insane. because people do not want to go to war The number of flight missions to be flown before a soldier can be dismissed is raised. The reason for this is because Colonel Cathcart wants to be promoted to a General. Just as Yossarian, the protagonist, gets closer to the number of required number of missions, the number is raised. Slaughterhouse Five actually goes farther than just using the non chronological structure by also writing in short chapters. The chapters are comprised of short paragraphs that are divided into unrelated sections. Vonnegut uses this unique structure because the way events are told to the reader is similar to how undifferentiated schizophrenics think and communicate ideas which ... Snow Flower And The Secret Fan Analysis In the novel Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, by Lisa See, the role of women presented by the author incorporates historical context of societal value and conventions, reveals the agonizing subjugation necessary for life, and explores the subtleties of female power in a male centric world. Through characterization, dialogue, and imagery, the meaning behind the story of two friends reveals itself. Set in rural China in the early to mid 1800s, historical context plays a major role in defining the value placed on women by their society. Seen from the beginning, a young girl in a family acts only as a burden on them by being an extra mouth to feed and less valuable than a son. Young women at the time were only given value based on who they married, whether they had sons, and if they followed the conventions set before them. The main character, Lily states that her mother looked at her as a temporary mouth to feed and a body to dress until I went to my husband s home (See 12). By setting the stage of the time period, See defines the role of women as child bearers first, and servants to her husband s family second. Despite protests to that idea in contemporary times, women then understood their roles as being miserable so that their children may one day succeed. Pain and convention controlled a woman s everyday life, such as, When a girl, obey your father; when a wife, obey your husband; when a widow, obey your son (See 24). It was set up in the late 1800s and early 1900s in order to meet the rampant needs of America s newly industrialized economy. Public schooling supplied factories with a skilled labor force, and provided basic literacy to the masses, and it was the education that the vast majority of the population received. The overall implementation of our current school system credits itself to educational reformer Horace Mann, known as the father of American public schooling. Our schools are, in a sense, factories in which the raw products (children) are to be shaped and fashioned into products to meet the various demands of life. (Cubberley, 1917). Building upon the depersonalized monotony and rigorous hierarchy of the Prussian system, they formed an industrial education model devised to mass produce millions of workers for America s factories. These theorists believed that most of America s students were destined for a life of menial, industrial labor.
