Abstract One of Director Park Chan Wook s most renowned works is the film Oldboy (2003). At face
value, this film appears to be a regular mystery thriller film. However, after further analysis, there are
many parallels to contemporary Korean history and society. These parallels, or allegories, become
more apparent upon review of the film. The film contains references to Korea s tumultuous history
and contemporary culture, highlighting the multiple disappointments felt by the Korean people (Seth).
The main character Oh Dae su also stands in for the average Korean citizen while his adversary, Lee
Woo jin, represents upper class citizens, or chaebols, in Korea. After analyzing these points, this paper
argues that Oldboy does in fact serve as a socio political allegory for problems faced in contemporary
Korea. Problems that are addressed include democratization, class structure and privilege, capitalism,
and the importance of power and money in Korea (Kim).

Sophomore year at my school, Greenbrier School District, is our first year of High School. We are the

Sundiata himself is the most significant contributor to the formation of the Mali empire, however,
various women hold a background role that is vital to the series of occurring events that allow
Sundiata to become the king of Mali and form the Mali empire. The buffalo woman, Sogolon, and
Nana Triban are all female characters who allow Sundiata the ability to fulfill his prophecy and

The buffalo woman is the catalyst for all events succeeding her prophecy. Without her, Sundiata would
never have been born and the Mali Empire wouldn t have been created because Maghan wouldn t have
married Sogolon without knowing of the prophecy. Interestingly, the buffalo woman s prophecy
focuses more on Sogolon than Maghan, even though Sundiata s birth is reliant on both of them. This
gives Sogolon and immediate air of importance and power. The buffalo woman predicts that Sogolon,
will be an extraordinary woman if you manage to possess her (8). Here, the buffalo woman asserts the
exceptional quality of Sogolon, despite her unattractive exterior. It is also important to note that she

Epic barring Sundiata himself. She was prophesized to bear a child who will be more mighty than
Alexander (6). Interestingly, Sogolon s physical appearance is described persistently in this epic. She
is ugly, she is hideous, she bears on her back a disfiguring hump. Her monstrous eyes seem to have
been merely laid on her face, but, mystery of mysteries, this is the woman you must marry, sire, for
she will be the mother of him who will make the name of Mali immortal

Social Attitudes In The Great Gatsby
I felt a haunting loneliness sometimes, and felt it in others young clerks in the dusk, wasting the most
poignant moments of night and life (Fitzgerald, p.xx). This is the feeling one might feel in their lives
no matter how much money they have. F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote The Great Gatsby to portray the
different social attitudes within the upper class. F. Scott Fitzgerald was born Francis Scott Key
Fitzgerald on September 24, 1896 in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was 29 years old when The Great Gatsby
was published on April 10, 1925. In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald sheds light on the different
personalities between the aged rich families and the modern rich families. An example of the
sophistication of Gatsby are the elaborate parties he throws for the people he invites, while on the
other hand, Tom and Daisy have a simple dinner with only a few people over. The emptiness one
might feel at any time in their life cannot be fulfilled with money but only with other friends
surrounding one. Gatsby is characterized as a very elaborate man sophisticated in his ways. He is
always seen throwing extravagant parties with only the best of the best belongings in his home. One
week ends his Rolls Royce became an omnibus, bearing parties to and from the city between nine in
the morning and long past midnight, while his station wagon scampered like a brisk yellow bug to
meet all trains. ( Melville, p.39). Nick explains the bizarre lifestyle that Gatsby had with all his parties.
Although, throughout Gatsby s life, the reader is able to see the emptiness he feels without Daisy. I,m
just going to wait here and see if he tries to bother her about that unpleasantness this afternoon. She s
locked herself into her room, and if he tries any brutality she s going to turn the light out and on again.
(Melville, p.144). Here, the reader recognizes the love Gatsby has for daisy. He is willing to wait all
night in order to be sure of her protection. Gatsby has called off all of his parties and fired all of his
servants just to spend time with daisy. In doing this, Gatsby shows great qualities that one should look

Hofstede s model has been criticized as having a limited theoretical framework because the surveys he
used were not designed with his work in mind, but rather, were for IBM s internal purposes

As corn will naturally ferment, it is bathed in water containing sulfur dioxide. The water is kept at an
elevated temperature at about 120 Fahrenheit for the 40 hour duration of the steeping process. George
Inglett indicates that during that time, the corn absorbs water, swelling to its maximum size, and

The Allegheny woodrat (Neotoma magister) is a small mammal that is endemic to the United States.
They live in the eastern part of the United States in deciduous forests. Their species can be found from
the Appalachian Mountains through the interior Highland regions, including western Connecticut to
northern Alabama (Castleberry et al 2006). Woodrats are restricted to areas that have rocky structures
such as caves, fissures, and boulder piles and live within the spaces between rocks (Castleberry et al.
2006). Rocky habitats are good living spaces for them because the crevices provide protection from
predators and also create a den environment for young to develop. Since rocky areas are usually
distributed in patches throughout an environment, woodrats are considered to be metapopulations

using the same rocky habitats for denning, roosting, or nesting include the Rafinesque s big eared bat
