Community And Hate Crimes In The LGBTQ Community
Throughout society, social workers interact with oppressed groups far and wide. Social workers work
with these groups in hopes of pursuing social justice and to better the lives of these groups with the
usage of clinical referrals, providing individual and group therapy, welfare, and beyond the spectrum
as they establish a rapport with their clients simultaneously. One of the many groups is the LGBTQ
(lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning) community. For as long as history can write itself,
the LGBTQ community has faced various forms of attacks to their population; which then damages
society as a whole. The LGBTQ community faces several forms of oppression that is based off of the
fear, unfamiliarity, and hatred of those around them. This may cause them to have an enormous
distrust in society, suicide, and prominent discomfort. It is the social worker s responsibility to address
this community s pain and provide them the means, including empathy and appropriate resources,
necessary to climb the social ladder to equality physically and mentally. First and foremost, the
LGBTQ community faces a myriad amount of hate crimes. Hate crimes are defined by Congress as
criminal offense against a person or property motivated in whole or in part by an offender s bias
against a race, religion, disability, ethnic origin or sexual orientation (Plumm , K.M., Potter, S.,
Terrance, C.A.,2015). Typically, hate crimes are categorized differently from other crimes against

Professional Organizations Were Created To Assist In The
Professional organizations were created to assist in the growth and development of a profession
(Black, 2014). For example, nurses use organizations to improve health and working conditions that
result in changing the way health is delivered to a population (Black, 2014). These organizations allow
individuals to express their opinions on current issues, enhance their knowledge of the profession, and
facilitate relationships with other individuals that share the same interest and concerns. To get a better
understanding of these groups, I explored the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA)
website to see what information I could collection. The APNA is an independent organization that was

After reading through the APNA s website I would have to say I agree with the APNA s goal, which is
to help individuals and their loved ones understand the prevention, diagnosis, and recovery of
psychiatric patients, by being recognized as the expert voice for psychiatric mental health nursing
(American Psychiatric Nurses Association, 2015). The APNA organization started with 600 members
and has now grown to nearly 10,000 members that are interested in or apart of the mental health
nursing practice (American Psychiatric Nurses Association, 2015). While looking though the website,
I could not found a specific breakdown of the number of members, but the site did stated, APNA
supports and serves the interests of psychiatric mental health nurses both nationally and internationally
(American Psychiatric Nurses Association, 2015). Members of this association are automatically
assigned to their state s chapter (American Psychiatric Nurses Association, 2015). Virginia s chapter
page has very little information compared to other state chapters, but from the information I gathered,
this chapter is not local active in the Hampton Roads Community. This organization puts lots of
energy into advancing research to improve the techniques of identifying mental health issues
(American Psychiatric Nurses Association, 2015). With earlier detection, psychiatric nurse clinicians
will be able to promote the proper health and wellness to those on the

Essay about To Belong Not Necessarily to Identify
TO BELONG IS NOT NECESSARILY TO IDENTIFY WITH IT
In our social life, each person has one s own roles and responsibilities, attitudes and values. Since
every individual is unique and distinct compared to one another, these elements that construct our
individuality are not always similar. Similarities and reflection of our values make us belong to a
group, but the differences are barriers that stop ourselves from being recognized as an indivisible part
of it. Belonging and identity are inseparable; nonetheless, there are distinctions that create a world of
difference between the two. Belonging is not only about to whom we incorporate ourselves the way
we perceive it, but also how others recognize our relationship with that group. ... Show more content

In the absolute core of one s consciousness, a person knows into which groups one belongs naturally.
However, one s conscience is able to judge matters, determine values and set goals. Since, our
thoughts and behaviour are governed, partly if not completely, by our own conscience, our approach
to matters that related to belonging is heavily influenced by our conscience. Therefore, when an
individual denies one s relationship with a particular tribe, an individual s behaviour will reflect to the
refusal to recognise the connection with that party. Hence, we can technically belong without having
an intimate connection. This is situation can be regarded as a surface belonging ; while others
recognise one s belonging, it is denied by oneself. An example of this case can be seen in a stage play
titled Bombshells by Joanna Murray Smith, in the monologue of Meryl Louise Davenport. Meryl
constantly endeavours to fulfil her responsibilities as a mother and valuable member of society.
However, her attempts to live up to these expectations force her to abandon herself. She does however,
keeps her responsibilities. She refuses to belong to a tribe of women who just throw themselves
together , despite her current state of being unable to take care of herself properly. On the surface, she
belongs to the good mothers , or so others perceive it. However,

The company then stated that the individuals would not know what to do with the money. Brockovich

Cultural Rape in Chinua Achebe s Things Fall Apart Essay
Cultural Rape In Things Fall Apart
In Things Fall Apart, Achebe shows the ruthlessness of the missionaries in pursuit of new converts.
Domestic support for the missions depended in large measure upon the tangible success of their
preaching, success being reflected in the numbers of conversions. This relentless focus on success
caused the cultural rape of the people of Umuofia.
Achebe even hints at their use of bribery and blackmail in their endeavours. He tells us, the white
missionary had set up a school to teach young Christians to read and write (126). The inference is
clearly that the unconverted heathens were not given this opportunity. Yet bearing in mind the orality
of Nigerian culture, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This presents a clear picture of the sheer rapidity of the colonial project. It seems inevitable that much
indigenous tradition and heritage will be swept away, resulting in feelings of profound cultural
dislocation, and loss of identity.
Yet despite these hardships, the reader cannot escape the feeling the Achebe is not as narrow minded
and bitter as he first appears. He clearly does not object to the discovery of and learning about new
religions and cultures. He presents a strong argument in favour of discussion as a path towards
understanding. In Things Fall Apart, the missionary Mr Brown and Akunna, one of the tribal elders,
often spend long hours in discussion, and although Neither of them succeeded in converting the other
... they learnt more about their different beliefs (147). This demonstrates a mutual relationship, in
which both parties are equally eager to learn when approached on equal terms.
It is not Achebe s intention to demonstrate any superiority an idealistic pre colonial Nigerian existence
might hold over life in Europe. What he seeks to achieve is an illumination of the complicated truth of
African existence (and) a concrete insight into the reality of their existence ( Conch 6. 1 2, 1974,
p.19). As clearly demonstrated in Things Fall Apart, he is making neither excuses nor apologies for
African existence.

The History of Film Editing
My grandpa is always talking about how much movies have changed with time. His favorite movie,
E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial, is an example of how editing and special effects have changed drastically
since 1982 and even before that. Watching a movie from this year compared to a movie from the
1930s, you would notice many differences. In the beginning, there was no digital technology to edit
films. There have also been important contributors to help evolvement in film editing. In the process
of editing film, there are some common editing techniques that have been used ever since film started.
The way you edit a scene can also affect the mood and feeling of it. Although the editing of
filmmaking has changed a lot over time, there are many reasons for the cause of this including
humanities drastic evolvement in technology.
In the beginning, there was no digital technology to edit films. The initial editing of all films was done
with a positive copy of the film negative called a film work print. This was done by physically cutting
and pasting together pieces of film, using a splicer and threading the film on a machine with a viewer,
which was a Moviola, flatbed machine or Steenbeck. The 2 Video Tape Recording System (VTR)
created by Ampex Corp. was introduced in 1956. This device was also called the splicing block. The
user of the machine was able to view the splice point through a microscope. The machine also had a
cutting blade that was mounted across the guide to be able to

The Theme of Time in Slaughterhouse-Five Essay
The Theme of Time in Slaughterhouse Five
Many writers in history have written science fiction novels and had great success with them, but only
a few have been as enduring over time as Kurt Vonnegut s Slaughterhouse Five. Slaughterhouse Five
is a personal novel which draws upon Vonnegut s experience s as a scout in World War Two, his
capture and becoming a prisoner of war, and his witnessing of the fire bombing of Dresden in
February of 1945 (the greatest man caused massacre in history). The novel is about the life and times
of a World War Two veteran named Billy Pilgrim. In Slaughterhouse Five, Kurt Vonnegut uses
structure and point of view to portray the theme that time is relative.

dimension, time, which allowed them to keep Billy for what seemed like longer than what he was
actually there. While on Tralfamadore, Billy learns to accept his life as it is dealt to him because
nothing that happens to you damages you forever. Since time is relative, and your life is like a
mountain range, your death ,birth, and all the events in between are nothing more than peaks in a
range of mountains, irremovable and able to be visited numerous times. The point of view that
Slaughterhouse Five is written from also affects the way the reader fells about time after reading the
novel. Since the story is narrated by a omniscient being that is everywhere with Billy Pilgrim, the
reader gets a first hand account of every event in his life. Also Billy is very relaxed and accepting all
things around him. A good example of this is Billy s habit of following every death with so it goes .
(Vonnegut 69) The repetition of this phrase not only de emphasizes death, but also helps Vonnegut
assert control over the readers response after a death. (Dawley 2) The way Billy

The Leadership And Management Workflow
In every organization, the leadership and management workflow comprises the vast majority of
decision making and will be the defining factor in workplace cultures, communication, and overall
sustaining business practices. In non profit organizations, this statement holds true. For example, Big
Brothers Big Sisters is the oldest, largest youth mentoring organization in America. Their vision is to
provide all children, especially those facing adversity, with achievable success in their lifetime. The
executive team that makes up the governing board for this organization has their own leadership
practices that will lead towards the organization having different strengths and weaknesses in theory
and in the workplace. The Contingency Leadership Theory will be discussed in context of Kansas Big
Brothers Big Sisters as well as in general practice.
Organizational Description
Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters is an affiliate of Big Brothers Big Sisters America and has been since
1969. Since this time, Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters has grown to the second largest affiliate agency
in the nation, serving more than 6,000 children statewide with over 4,000 children on the waiting list.
The one to one mentoring style that is provided by the organization is what sets it apart from other
organizations who also provide mentoring services. Their mission is to provide children facing
adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one to one relationships that change their

Theoretical Reflection On The Gospel Of Mark
For our first theoretical reflection we were assigned to read the gospel of Mark. Taking on this reading
requires an opened mindset and concentration. Reading this passage was hard for me because when I
am in church listening to the gospel readings, I do admit to lack interest. I read the gospel of Mark to
myself first because it takes time for me to analyze and process the event that occurs in the reading.
After reading the gospel to myself I listened to the audio reading. Listening to the audio version of the
gospel helped me find a deeper meaning to the reading. This allowed me to be part of the reading as if
I am there during that time. While I was looking over the reading there were many factors that went
into understanding the reading. I reread certain parts because I did not understand what was occurring
during a certain event. If I had no knowledge of the gospel and what was happening, then reading this
would have been a lot tougher on me. Since I somewhat know the broad stories of the gospel from
growing up and attending mass on Sundays, it help me have a background going into the reading.
There are a lot of small details about which the events occurred and how people felt back in Jesus s
time. The ability for someone to retell the story of Jesus s life is extraordinary. Following the gospel
help me get a better understanding of what went on during this time and how people have evolved
throughout the years. The story being told of Jesus s life through the Bible is

issues Malcom X responds to in his speech The Ballot or the Bullet . Mathu s believes in his respect as
an equal person and gains it by not fearing white people. However, the preacher Jameson fears the
whites and is scared of the consequences of standing up to them. In the book, times have changed and
racism is slowly dying. In the story, A Gathering of Old Men , Mathu was a character that was
respected, because he feared no one. When Beau was shot dead on Mathu s lawn, he stated, If Fix
started anything, I am going to protect myself (Gaines30). Being that Fix is a white man, going against
a white man at that time can lead blacks into a lot of trouble, such as being lynched. Yet, Mathu was
still prepared for the fight. If Mathu did not have the respect he has, then he would have been lynched
the moment he and Fix had the altercation at the store. According to the text, When Fix told Mathu to
take the bottle back in the store again, and Mathu did not, Fix hit him and the fight was on (Gaines30).
Mathu gained his respect, because he refused to be mistreated by anyone. According to the book, To
Mapes, Mathu was a real man (Gaines84). Mapes thought this because Mathu was not like the other
African Americans he knew due to Mathu actually defending himself. Even though Mathu stoop up

My field placement will be at Child protective services in El Paso TX. The department of child
Protective Services withholds a wide range of services and responsibilities that include, investigating
reports of abuse and neglect of children, provide services to children and families in their homes,
providing services to help youth in foster care successfully transition to adulthood and helping

Harriet Beecher Stowe And His Family Essay
During the 1800s slavery was common. Although, many people thought it was wrong and sinful, some
actually did not mind the practice. Harriet Beecher Stowe and her family were one of many who were
activists in the anti slavery movement. She was born in Litchfield, Connecticut on June 14, 1811. Her
father, Lyman Beecher, was a Calvinist preacher, and her mother, Roxana Foote, died when she was
four. When Stowe was 25 years old, she married Calvin Ellis Stowe, who was also against slavery and
a well known minister. Stowe s sister, Isabella Beecher Hooker, was an advocate for women s rights.
Another of her sisters, Catherine, founded a school to offer education for young women. Uncle Tom s
Cabin is about the life of Tom, an african slave, who was sold to a trader because of the debt owed by
his master. He was being moved to the South where he would begin his life like he has never done.
Slavery has always been a sorrowful topic, so when we were given the years between 1492 to 1870, it
came to mind right away. Google gave a handful of books to read, but only this mysterious title stroke

The book started off with a conversation between two men, Mr. Shelby, a farmer, and Mr. Haley, who

Marijuana And Other Narcotic Drugs
Marijuana and other narcotic drugs have been a controversial topic on a national and global scale
throughout the century. Marijuana especially is considered a drug that s harmful and helpful at the

scientific research that has been shared with the public from different experimental organizations. We
have had picketers demonstrate their support by protesting for the marijuana movement, which can be

Marijuana can be widely found and be easily grown in the United States. The easy accessibility of
drugs poses a serious threat to law enforcement around the country that have and has tried to enforce
the law to eradicate the use of drugs according to laws put into place by the legislature and supposedly
most of the people in that state. Marijuana is still illegal in some states and as time progresses the
number of states which can still uphold that marijuana is illegal has changed. Today, Twenty three
states and the District of Columbia currently have laws legalizing marijuana in some form or way out
of the fifty two states of the Union. The increase in marijuana and other drugs being used in that state
has its ties to narcotic crime which could be linked to the cartel for other drugs that are out there.
Thus, it increases narcotic crime in those states that choose to legalize it. Another con of marijuana
and of other dangerous drug use is the most obvious. It s the health of the individual who consumes it
by smoking it. Your lungs are inhaling substances such as tar and it is among other things that can

An Analysis Of Henley s Essay Invictus
Life is challenging for everyone. We will all face its difficulties eventually; whether it be something
financial, like paying bills, something physical, like a bodily injury, or something emotional, like the
loss of a loved one. Billions of people go through these struggles every day, maybe even you are going
through something similar. Because of this, it is important for everyone to stay strong, despite the
difficulties of life; because whether we like it or not, bad things will continue to happen, and
collapsing under that pressure is no good for anyone. In William Ernest Henley s poem Invictus, the
narrator, who is very likely the author, tells us that through all of life s difficulties, we must remain
dignified, stand tall, and keep moving forward. The reason the narrator of the poem is very likely the

The Use of Literary Devices, Imagery, and Tone in Krapp’s...
The Imagery Tone of a Play:
The Use of Literary Devices Imagery Tone in Krapp s Last Tape
In the play Krapp s Last Tape, there is one protagonist who is described as sitting at a small table,
listening to tapes. Krapp is an impaired and broken down elderly man who spends his time listening to
his younger voice on tapes. He is egotistical and subjective towards his younger self and critiques the
way he acted in a certain place or time. He is lonely, but okay with it as he would rather focus on
things that he has already experienced, rather then engage in new ones. He is essentially stuck in the
past. The essay written below disputes the literary devices of imagery and tone in order to provide
background and symbolism in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Imagery plays a big part in describing the character s appearance and actions in order to show what a
character is like and how they respond to differing situations. It can also shape the story and reveal to
the reader the background of a person, place, or thing. In Krapp s Last Tape, the only character is
given much detail and description in order to start the play at a point where the reader already knows
some information about this elderly man. The literary convention of imagery provides insight into the
character that will lead the play.
Krapp, the main protagonist in Krapp s Last Tape is given a good amount of description, leading into
the beginning of dialogue. His raggedy grey hair, disheveled clothes, and death ridden face give the
reader an image of a character that has lived through many years. It is as if he has given up on life and
is preparing for what is to come. The fact that he is also hard of hearing and has a cracked voice,
seems to have intensified the distaste towards his character. Krapp s descriptive appearance helps to
foreshadow his cynical and confined personality.
Krapp also remains motionless for most of the play. The only actions that do take place are of him
eating a banana in the very beginning and the loading of the three tapes that Krapp focuses on in the
dialogue. This imagery of him loading the tapes and sitting at his table depicts

Censorship Of Cargo Ships
Piracy on the open seas is becoming more threatening by the day. Ships are being hijacked and being
sold for ransom for millions of dollars. With ways that are being developed to help protect ships such
as fire hoses, flares, and barbed wire along the rails of the boats. They still do not guarantee a safe ride
for the cargo and crew onboard. Cargo ships should be allowed to carry weapons to protect from
pirates and other intruders.
Some say that there is a very slim chance of a ship being attacked by pirates. There are over 50,000
cargo ships all around the world so what are the chances?(Curry n.p.) But, more and more ships are
being captured around the world each day and those ships need to be protected 271 ships were
hijacked off the coast of Somalia in 2009, which is over 500 million dollars is cargo.(Gale n.p).
Because of this, the shipping companies are losing money by trying to transport things to people in

Summary Of I m Fine
Mrs. Freinheit did just that and had released everyone fire minutes early actually. Phillip, she then said
as the room cleared out in a torrent of whispers. Are you going to be alright? I have time to discuss
things further with you if you wish? Hopefully we can come to some sort of understanding. I m fine,
Phillip sulked. Look, I just want to go, is that alright? Sure, Phillip, you re dismissed. I ll see you next
week. What had happened at Saturday school class had remained an unknown to Russell and his
parents, and Phillip was grateful for that. But, there was no doubt in his mind that he was going to
become the talk of the town once word got out of what had happened in Mrs. Freinheit s class today.

It was as if an internal force had taken over him, shutting down his rebelliousness and aspiration to
make a statement, but why? Phillip s ambivalence thoughts both confused and tormented him as he
remembered his dream in which he had the other day. Who were those men he saw in it? He knew
after having the dream that it wasn t the first time he had seen them, that was for certain. They were
both there in the vision he had back when he had become debilitated, falling unconscious in the local
park, but who were they? Where was he when he found himself in that weird tube like contraption he
had emerged from? What was that gigantic facility that held everyone captive, and who were the other
people locked away in the tubes? All questions that continuously mockingly danced around in Phillip s
head as he sat on his bed staring off into a void, but he had no answers for any of them. His answers
laid on the other side. With that other world. With the volunteers if that s who those men truly were, an
ever growing suspicion. But, that other world was a million miles away, and the only doorway to it
was in either becoming sick or be called home. Nobody had ever come back after being called home,
though. Phillip was pretty sure of that. At least, he had never heard of such a thing happening. In his
mind, he was positive that being called home was some form of death or what was death before the
volunteers arrival. People had always died.

U.s. Security Interests On Egyptian Citizens
Introduction Over the past five years Egypt has been in a growing state of turmoil. It has suffered two
coup d états that has resulted in five different leaders, and a constant change in national aims. It
temporarily lost US economic aid and military support, and the recent studies have brought to light the
effect that global warming will have on Egyptian citizens in the near future. If you consider all these
aspects together, you may assume that Egypt is in risk of soon becoming another problem state for
U.S. security interests. However, if you take a closer look at the changes made in just the last two
years, you can see that the opposite is true. This paper will argue that rather than being a hindrance to
U.S. security interests, Egypt has the potential to be one of its greatest allies. To do this, it will first
look at the overall importance of Egypt in the National Security s objectives of the United States. It
will then review the history of US Egyptian Relations, Egypt s military involvement with the United
States, and the recent political changes that are shaping Egypt s future. Then finally this paper will
take a moment to exam the leadership of Egypt s newest President, Abdel Fatteh el Sisi. In doing so
we will be able to see how Egypt is poised to be a key player, in accomplishing the U.S. security
objectives, and gain a better understanding of why the U.S. must make it a priority to support Egypt s
newly established leadership.

Applying Normalized Tables And The Model Of The Entity...
then be able to identify the dependencies between the attributes, and then create normalized tables
directly based on those dependencies. More often than not this can be done mentally or on paper
before the tables are even added to the actual design.
Normalization appropriates the affiliation amongst all of the attributes within the entity table to
achieve its goal. Since the Entity Relationship Diagram will also contain the appropriations amongst
the attributes, as a common base to identify the entity type structure, than it is possible to then apply
the normalization principles, all during the conceptual data modeling phase. Enacting Normalization
during the Entity Relationship Diagram can then improve the conceptual model, and therefore ...

Relationship Diagram can take place when the attributes within the entity example have more than one
value. This is a potential instance when some attributes within an entity examples have the maximum
cardinality of n, or more than 1. When the attribute has lots of values in an entity example, this can be
setup either as the composite key modifier of the entity type, or then split into the weak entity type.
Normalized Entity Relationship represents the dependency approach in Entity Relationship Diagram
toward the intended use in the application of normal form. Normalization is a many step occurrence
that begins with unnormalized relations. The first set up in normalization is to appropriate the data into
a two dimensional table. In an unnormalized relation the data can repeat within the columns. To be
able to move to a first normal form a relation must also contain only the atomic values at each of the
rows and columns. So this means no repeating groups, and a set of columns will be named the

Analysis Of Sweat And Sweat By Zora Neale Hurston
The point of view a story is told in has a significant impact on how the reader perceives the story, the
plot, and the characters. Sweat by Zora Neale Hurston, 1978, and Pigeons at Daybreak by Anita Desai,
1926, are both narrated in third person limited omniscient. Although both stories are narrated from the
same point of view and both follow the protagonist of the story, the stories portray the main characters
as complete opposites. While Delia, the protagonist in Sweat , invokes empathy from the reader, she
ultimately is strong and independent. Mr. Basu, the protagonist in Pigeons at Daybreak , invokes
frustration and pity from the reader as he is begging for sympathy from his wife.

In the story Pigeons at Daybreak the protagonist, Mr. Basu, is portrayed as a very ill man who uses his
illness to gain sympathy from his wife who is his sole caretaker. Although she does her best to take
care of him and provide him with everything he needs, Mr. Basu is continuously rude and
unappreciative toward her. As the story goes on, the narrator continues to portray Mr. Basu in a
negative light. For example, when Mrs. Basu reads the newspaper to her husband and he says, You can
t be reading right (Desai 221) assuming she is incapable of reading the newspaper, although she is
highly educated. Mr. Basu s negative attitude elicits a disapproving review from the reader.
Throughout the story, the reader is constantly reminded how self centered and selfish Mr. Basu is,
especially as Mrs. Basu begins blaming herself when he becomes overwhelmed and worried. The third
person limited omniscient perspective emphasizes the overall theme which is appreciating what others
are gifting you with rather than taking advantage of their generosity. It does so by creating a sense of
understanding of both Mr. Basu s frustration, and Mrs. Basu s patience. In contrast to Sweat , the third
person narrator in Pigeons at Daybreak invokes the reader to feel negatively toward the main
character, Mr. Basu, and

Dwight Schrute s The Office
Situational comedies draw connections between the realm of television life and reality. These shows
are successful due to the realistic scenarios and mishaps that shape the lives of each individual
character. The Office is a mockumentary , or parody documentary, that follows a small paper company
in Scranton, Pennsylvania that is led by narcissistic boss, Michael Scott (Steve Carrell). Episode 12 of
season 2, The Injury is a summary of the overall show, as it exhibits Michael s desire to feel wanted

Through the use of the mockumentary style, The Office highlights humor in the American workplace,
and it provides a platform to discuss the deeper meanings behind societal beliefs and actions. The star
driven talent of Michael Scott represents those in society that seek the approval of others. While
Michael has successfully become manager of his branch and continues to report extremely high
quarterly sales, he lacks a sense of accomplishment. Continually, he seeks attention through rambling
and joking with nearly every member of his office. As the axial character, Steve Carrell follows the
traditional situational comedy style with his performance based representation of Michael. As an
example, he exemplifies a narcissistic personality in The Injury, when he phones into work with a
seemingly severe injury. The mockumentary style of the television show provides a reality within The
Office that allows viewers to feel involved. While Michael only has a miniscule burn on his foot from
an accident involving a Gary Coleman Grill, his reaction causes the coworkers and viewers to believe
he is in critical condition. The A plot of the episode begins as Michael attempts to survive a day at the

High School Class Election Scenario
We have all gone through the period in life called high school, no matter how hard we may try to
forget it. Classes, athletic events, and just joking around with friends, but at the beginning of every
school year these friendships would be tested in the dreaded class election. To put it frankly a
popularity contest where every person in the grade gets one vote for a candidate. But let us imagine an
election where the teachers decided who became the head honcho on the block. That even though the
class may overwhelmingly vote for one candidate the other may still win. This sounds like a
dictatorship we would see in North Korea or Russia, but the system we related in that high school
class election scenario is actually the same system we use ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However the system can be so deranged that some small states are given up to 3 times as many
electors as they should get if they were handed out proportionate to their population (jdallicorn51). In
today s politically charged climate, many questions have been raised about the viability and
sustainability of such an archaic system. The electoral college should be abolished in the United States
because it causes unnecessary confusion, reduces the value of a vote, and the existence of it is
inherently against the principles of democracy our country was founded upon. We will first understand
why the electoral college should be abolished because it causes unnecessary confusion in which a tie
is possible between the candidates. A perfect example is the presidential election of 2000 where the
candidate with 500,000 more popular votes, Al Gore, lost the election due to the electoral college. The
reason being that one elector refused to vote for Gore and the suspicious voter count in Florida that
would be considered voter fraud today. The country was in great uncertainty over the next few months
after the election because many supporters of Al Gore rightly said that Al Gore should have won the
presidency. Al Gore ended up with 266 electoral votes, George H.W. Bush with 271, and one elector
who should have voted for Gore abstained from voting. This unnecessary confusion

Taking a Look at Cochlear Implants
Sometimes people forget that eyesight and hearing are not something that everybody has. There are
some people in the world that are living without one or both of these senses. In some circumstances,
these two senses are able to be given to somebody who hasn t had them before. There are many
different procedures and ways for a person to either gain their eyesight or hearing again, for the first
time in their life. In terms of hearing, there is a procedure that is booming popularity all over the
world. Along with having the surgery, the patient then wears a device called a cochlear implant.
Cochlear Implants are changing the world of hearing so that people who receive them are able to gain
hearing ability to sounds around them. This partially unknown medical procedure is gaining more
attention around the world with its high success rates and its ability to change peoples lives forever.
According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders Website, a
cochlear implant is defined as a small, complex electronic device that can help provide a sense of
sound to someone who is profoundly deaf or severely hard of hearing. The first cochlear implant
demonstration was in Paris in the 1950 s done by André Djourno and Charles Eryiés. Records say that
it took over 50 years of discovering and making these devices until one succeeded. Once they had
built one that worked, Djourno and Eryiés conducted their first operation by putting a gold wire

  • 3. Community And Hate Crimes In The LGBTQ Community Throughout society, social workers interact with oppressed groups far and wide. Social workers work with these groups in hopes of pursuing social justice and to better the lives of these groups with the usage of clinical referrals, providing individual and group therapy, welfare, and beyond the spectrum as they establish a rapport with their clients simultaneously. One of the many groups is the LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning) community. For as long as history can write itself, the LGBTQ community has faced various forms of attacks to their population; which then damages society as a whole. The LGBTQ community faces several forms of oppression that is based off of the fear, unfamiliarity, and hatred of those around them. This may cause them to have an enormous distrust in society, suicide, and prominent discomfort. It is the social worker s responsibility to address this community s pain and provide them the means, including empathy and appropriate resources, necessary to climb the social ladder to equality physically and mentally. First and foremost, the LGBTQ community faces a myriad amount of hate crimes. Hate crimes are defined by Congress as criminal offense against a person or property motivated in whole or in part by an offender s bias against a race, religion, disability, ethnic origin or sexual orientation (Plumm , K.M., Potter, S., Terrance, C.A.,2015). Typically, hate crimes are categorized differently from other crimes against persons ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Professional Organizations Were Created To Assist In The Professional organizations were created to assist in the growth and development of a profession (Black, 2014). For example, nurses use organizations to improve health and working conditions that result in changing the way health is delivered to a population (Black, 2014). These organizations allow individuals to express their opinions on current issues, enhance their knowledge of the profession, and facilitate relationships with other individuals that share the same interest and concerns. To get a better understanding of these groups, I explored the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA) website to see what information I could collection. The APNA is an independent organization that was created 30 years ago with the hope of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After reading through the APNA s website I would have to say I agree with the APNA s goal, which is to help individuals and their loved ones understand the prevention, diagnosis, and recovery of psychiatric patients, by being recognized as the expert voice for psychiatric mental health nursing (American Psychiatric Nurses Association, 2015). The APNA organization started with 600 members and has now grown to nearly 10,000 members that are interested in or apart of the mental health nursing practice (American Psychiatric Nurses Association, 2015). While looking though the website, I could not found a specific breakdown of the number of members, but the site did stated, APNA supports and serves the interests of psychiatric mental health nurses both nationally and internationally (American Psychiatric Nurses Association, 2015). Members of this association are automatically assigned to their state s chapter (American Psychiatric Nurses Association, 2015). Virginia s chapter page has very little information compared to other state chapters, but from the information I gathered, this chapter is not local active in the Hampton Roads Community. This organization puts lots of energy into advancing research to improve the techniques of identifying mental health issues (American Psychiatric Nurses Association, 2015). With earlier detection, psychiatric nurse clinicians will be able to promote the proper health and wellness to those on the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Essay about To Belong Not Necessarily to Identify TO BELONG IS NOT NECESSARILY TO IDENTIFY WITH IT In our social life, each person has one s own roles and responsibilities, attitudes and values. Since every individual is unique and distinct compared to one another, these elements that construct our individuality are not always similar. Similarities and reflection of our values make us belong to a group, but the differences are barriers that stop ourselves from being recognized as an indivisible part of it. Belonging and identity are inseparable; nonetheless, there are distinctions that create a world of difference between the two. Belonging is not only about to whom we incorporate ourselves the way we perceive it, but also how others recognize our relationship with that group. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the absolute core of one s consciousness, a person knows into which groups one belongs naturally. However, one s conscience is able to judge matters, determine values and set goals. Since, our thoughts and behaviour are governed, partly if not completely, by our own conscience, our approach to matters that related to belonging is heavily influenced by our conscience. Therefore, when an individual denies one s relationship with a particular tribe, an individual s behaviour will reflect to the refusal to recognise the connection with that party. Hence, we can technically belong without having an intimate connection. This is situation can be regarded as a surface belonging ; while others recognise one s belonging, it is denied by oneself. An example of this case can be seen in a stage play titled Bombshells by Joanna Murray Smith, in the monologue of Meryl Louise Davenport. Meryl constantly endeavours to fulfil her responsibilities as a mother and valuable member of society. However, her attempts to live up to these expectations force her to abandon herself. She does however, keeps her responsibilities. She refuses to belong to a tribe of women who just throw themselves together , despite her current state of being unable to take care of herself properly. On the surface, she belongs to the good mothers , or so others perceive it. However, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Cultural Rape in Chinua Achebe s Things Fall Apart Essay Cultural Rape In Things Fall Apart In Things Fall Apart, Achebe shows the ruthlessness of the missionaries in pursuit of new converts. Domestic support for the missions depended in large measure upon the tangible success of their preaching, success being reflected in the numbers of conversions. This relentless focus on success caused the cultural rape of the people of Umuofia. Achebe even hints at their use of bribery and blackmail in their endeavours. He tells us, the white missionary had set up a school to teach young Christians to read and write (126). The inference is clearly that the unconverted heathens were not given this opportunity. Yet bearing in mind the orality of Nigerian culture, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This presents a clear picture of the sheer rapidity of the colonial project. It seems inevitable that much indigenous tradition and heritage will be swept away, resulting in feelings of profound cultural dislocation, and loss of identity. Yet despite these hardships, the reader cannot escape the feeling the Achebe is not as narrow minded and bitter as he first appears. He clearly does not object to the discovery of and learning about new religions and cultures. He presents a strong argument in favour of discussion as a path towards understanding. In Things Fall Apart, the missionary Mr Brown and Akunna, one of the tribal elders, often spend long hours in discussion, and although Neither of them succeeded in converting the other ... they learnt more about their different beliefs (147). This demonstrates a mutual relationship, in which both parties are equally eager to learn when approached on equal terms. It is not Achebe s intention to demonstrate any superiority an idealistic pre colonial Nigerian existence might hold over life in Europe. What he seeks to achieve is an illumination of the complicated truth of African existence (and) a concrete insight into the reality of their existence ( Conch 6. 1 2, 1974, p.19). As clearly demonstrated in Things Fall Apart, he is making neither excuses nor apologies for African existence. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. The History of Film Editing My grandpa is always talking about how much movies have changed with time. His favorite movie, E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial, is an example of how editing and special effects have changed drastically since 1982 and even before that. Watching a movie from this year compared to a movie from the 1930s, you would notice many differences. In the beginning, there was no digital technology to edit films. There have also been important contributors to help evolvement in film editing. In the process of editing film, there are some common editing techniques that have been used ever since film started. The way you edit a scene can also affect the mood and feeling of it. Although the editing of filmmaking has changed a lot over time, there are many reasons for the cause of this including humanities drastic evolvement in technology. In the beginning, there was no digital technology to edit films. The initial editing of all films was done with a positive copy of the film negative called a film work print. This was done by physically cutting and pasting together pieces of film, using a splicer and threading the film on a machine with a viewer, which was a Moviola, flatbed machine or Steenbeck. The 2 Video Tape Recording System (VTR) created by Ampex Corp. was introduced in 1956. This device was also called the splicing block. The user of the machine was able to view the splice point through a microscope. The machine also had a cutting blade that was mounted across the guide to be able to ... • 11. The Theme of Time in Slaughterhouse-Five Essay The Theme of Time in Slaughterhouse Five Many writers in history have written science fiction novels and had great success with them, but only a few have been as enduring over time as Kurt Vonnegut s Slaughterhouse Five. Slaughterhouse Five is a personal novel which draws upon Vonnegut s experience s as a scout in World War Two, his capture and becoming a prisoner of war, and his witnessing of the fire bombing of Dresden in February of 1945 (the greatest man caused massacre in history). The novel is about the life and times of a World War Two veteran named Billy Pilgrim. Billy says that the aliens abducted him on his daughter s wedding night and returned him a few milliseconds later, but actually spend many months on Tralfamadore because the Tralfamadorians can also see in the fourth dimension, time, which allowed them to keep Billy for what seemed like longer than what he was actually there. While on Tralfamadore, Billy learns to accept his life as it is dealt to him because nothing that happens to you damages you forever. Since time is relative, and your life is like a mountain range, your death ,birth, and all the events in between are nothing more than peaks in a range of mountains, irremovable and able to be visited numerous times. The point of view that Slaughterhouse Five is written from also affects the way the reader fells about time after reading the novel. Since the story is narrated by a omniscient being that is everywhere with Billy Pilgrim, the reader gets a first hand account of every event in his life. Also Billy is very relaxed and accepting all things around him. A good example of this is Billy s habit of following every death with so it goes . (Vonnegut 69) The repetition of this phrase not only de emphasizes death, but also helps Vonnegut assert control over the readers response after a death. (Dawley 2) The way Billy ... • 12. The Leadership And Management Workflow In every organization, the leadership and management workflow comprises the vast majority of decision making and will be the defining factor in workplace cultures, communication, and overall sustaining business practices. In non profit organizations, this statement holds true. For example, Big Brothers Big Sisters is the oldest, largest youth mentoring organization in America. Their vision is to provide all children, especially those facing adversity, with achievable success in their lifetime. The executive team that makes up the governing board for this organization has their own leadership practices that will lead towards the organization having different strengths and weaknesses in theory and in the workplace. The Contingency Leadership Theory will be discussed in context of Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters as well as in general practice. Organizational Description Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters is an affiliate of Big Brothers Big Sisters America and has been since 1969. Since this time, Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters has grown to the second largest affiliate agency in the nation, serving more than 6,000 children statewide with over 4,000 children on the waiting list. • 13. Theoretical Reflection On The Gospel Of Mark For our first theoretical reflection we were assigned to read the gospel of Mark. Taking on this reading requires an opened mindset and concentration. Reading this passage was hard for me because when I am in church listening to the gospel readings, I do admit to lack interest. I read the gospel of Mark to myself first because it takes time for me to analyze and process the event that occurs in the reading. After reading the gospel to myself I listened to the audio reading. Listening to the audio version of the gospel helped me find a deeper meaning to the reading. This allowed me to be part of the reading as if I am there during that time. While I was looking over the reading there were many factors that went into understanding the reading. I reread certain parts because I did not understand what was occurring during a certain event. If I had no knowledge of the gospel and what was happening, then reading this would have been a lot tougher on me. Since I somewhat know the broad stories of the gospel from growing up and attending mass on Sundays, it help me have a background going into the reading. In the book, times have changed and racism is slowly dying. In the story, A Gathering of Old Men , Mathu was a character that was respected, because he feared no one. When Beau was shot dead on Mathu s lawn, he stated, If Fix started anything, I am going to protect myself (Gaines30). Being that Fix is a white man, going against a white man at that time can lead blacks into a lot of trouble, such as being lynched. Yet, Mathu was still prepared for the fight. If Mathu did not have the respect he has, then he would have been lynched the moment he and Fix had the altercation at the store. According to the text, When Fix told Mathu to take the bottle back in the store again, and Mathu did not, Fix hit him and the fight was on (Gaines30). Mathu gained his respect, because he refused to be mistreated by anyone. According to the book, To Mapes, Mathu was a real man (Gaines84). Harriet Beecher Stowe and her family were one of many who were activists in the anti slavery movement. She was born in Litchfield, Connecticut on June 14, 1811. Her father, Lyman Beecher, was a Calvinist preacher, and her mother, Roxana Foote, died when she was four. We will all face its difficulties eventually; whether it be something financial, like paying bills, something physical, like a bodily injury, or something emotional, like the loss of a loved one. Because of this, it is important for everyone to stay strong, despite the difficulties of life; because whether we like it or not, bad things will continue to happen, and collapsing under that pressure is no good for anyone. In William Ernest Henley s poem Invictus, the narrator, who is very likely the author, tells us that through all of life s difficulties, we must remain dignified, stand tall, and keep moving forward. The reason the narrator of the poem is very likely the author is because, during the time that Henley wrote this poem, he was going through some difficulties in his own life.
