Electoral Thresholds and the Representation of Women Essay
Electoral Thresholds and the Representation of Women
There are large cross national differences in the percentage of women in legislatures. Institutional
arrangement is a considerable explanatory factor in the disparity in women s representation, and many
mechanisms have been implemented to increase parity. Within PR systems, electoral systems are a
way to try to increase the representation of women. Previous studies have linked thresholds to
increased party magnitude and in turn to increased women s representation, but there have not been
extensive studies to directly link thresholds to women s representation. This paper analyzes the impact
of thresholds directly, finding that the relationship between thresholds and women s ... Show more

Not all proportional electoral systems are created equal. Various institutional tweaks can alter the
woman friendliness of a system. Electoral thresholds provide a strong example of how particular rules
can affect the membership of a governing body. There is debate regarding the effect and importance of
thresholds, and this paper adds to that discourse by directly examining the impact of thresholds on
women.
An electoral threshold is the percentage of votes that must be achieved in order to gain access to the
legislature. The relationship between thresholds and women s representation has not been conclusively
studied. In theory, high electoral thresholds are seen to decrease the number of parties admitted to the
legislature, thereby increasing party magnitude and women s representation. At the same time, low
electoral thresholds may be important to women s representation. Low thresholds allow new, small
parties access to the legislature. These parties may be leftist and friendly to women, such as Green
parties, and increase the number of women brought into the legislature. Despite these conflicting
theories, there has not been a study directly examining the linkage between electoral threshold and
women s representation. Does such a relationship exist? And if there is a relationship, why should we
even care and what does that imply? The answers to these questions are extremely important,
especially since electoral thresholds are

Adolescents Are Technology Driven. They Wish To Be In Contact
Adolescents are technology driven. They wish to be in contact with others at all times. This often
leads to problematic social media use. Problematic social networking is when networking becomes an
addiction and is harmful to the individuals. The adolescent age group is between the ages of 12 and
18. To put this into reference this is the middle school to high school group. At this age, they need
eight hours of sleep to be healthy. Problematic networking causes a decrease in sleep in adolescents
and in turn, it is having a negative effect on their health resulting in issues in school. Problematic
social networking is a new phenomenon and few people have done research on. Dr. Banyai, a clinical
psychologist, is one of the few who has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dr. Woods, who also has her Ph.D. in psychology, studied how social media related to sleep quality
and a variety of other issues. The study Dr. Woods preformed consisted of 467 Scottish 11 15 year old
s completing a questionnaire in class. According to Dr. Woods, 54% of the time spent online by teens
is spent on social media (Woods). It is an issue that more than half the time students are online they
are on social media because if that time was cut down then problematic social networking would no
longer cut into the adolescent s sleep. I have noticed in my own personal life that being on social
media is a compulsion. I have closed an app because I had gone through everything and my first
instinct was to open it back up. I personally went through the compulsive part. The identification of
trends is another way people are now recognizing this is an issue. Dr. Banyai used the BSMAS scale
and found that the most at risk individuals were females who used the internet and social media for
more than thirty hours per week (7). Dr. Banyai s findings are significant because there are now trends
to be seen. Dr. Polos, a man who has his M.D. and Ph.D. in microbiology and immunology, formed a
similar at risk group in his cross sectional study. His study was looking at the impact of cell phone use
on sleep time. His study was comprised of 3139 surveys done by students. Dr. Polos introduced that
females had a higher rate of insomnia and

The Laramie Project Personal Response
Life is an amazing, wonderful, beautiful adventure that we are blessed with every day. But, we are
greeted many times throughout those days with choices we have to make. Most of those choices we
make are built by the structure and beliefs that our parents and loved ones have passed onto us.
Looking into how we were brought up can we really say what s right or wrong? Can we positively
determine that everyone thinks the same? While watching The Laramie Project you see and hear two
hundred different opinions towards the Matthew Shepard s case. Two hundred ... that s two hundred
people from Laramie, friends of the victim and attackers, and loved ones fighting for what they
believe is right. This case not only caught the whole town s attention but was recognized on a national
level. Labeled as a hate crime you learn so much more about the people s identity like Matthew
Shepard as a homosexual, the tragedy of a man/son/friend that struck a town, and how people see
Laramie, Wyoming as their home built by a community. Everyone identifies in their own way weather
your Christian, Catholic, heterosexual, homosexual, white, black, purple, or even yellow. ... Show

community. How a flip of a coin can determine the rest of a person s life. If the two individuals would
of stopped and thought of the right and wrong decisions to make maybe they would be at home right
now with their families and children enjoying the night. Maybe a man would have been changing the
world one smile at a time. Now the world will never know what Matthew Shepard could have

Still Regardless to thousands of other explanations, the best definition of leadership does not exist.
There is not one agreed definition in the world despite how much leadership has been studied and

Degeneration Research Papers
Age related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of irreversible vision loss among
elderly people. What begins as a slow loss of central vision, over time, results in difficulty reading,
driving and even recognizing the faces of loved ones. AMD not only makes doing everyday tasks
impossible, it diminishes a person s quality of life as well.
While there is no current cure for AMD, there are a number of things you can do to reduce your risk of
developing the disease and experiencing vision loss.
Quit Smoking
Without question, the number one thing you can do to prevent vision loss is to stop smoking. If you re
not a smoker, feel free to skip to the next section. If you ARE a smoker, continue reading to learn how
smoking often leads to AMD.
According to a report published in the British Medical Journal, smokers are up to four times ... Show

Stop Eating Refined Carbs
A study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition confirmed that a diet high in refined
carbohydrates increases a person s risk of developing macular degeneration. Highly refined foods like
white breads, cookies, crackers, cereals (most processed foods, really) have a high glycemic index,
causing a rapid increase in blood sugar and insulin release.
Focus on eating more low glycemic index foods like most fruits, brown rice, multi grain and whole
grain breads instead. In general, a good rule of thumb for optimum health is to eat more whole foods
and less (or no) processed, prepackaged foods.

Prejudice in Maya Angelou´s I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings
Have you ever stood up for something that started a movement? Throughout history the break between
African Americans and whites has been evident at many times. African Americans were treated
heartlessly, and unfairly. They struggled everyday to find work in a prejudice world that forced them
into submission. Through her inspirational and powerful words in the poem, I Know Why the Caged
Bird Sings , the much loved poet Maya Angelou uses poetic devices like rhyme, alliteration,
metaphors and imagery, to encourage African Americans to find their voice and earn the respect that
they deserved. Imagine reaching for the sky, and actually being able to touch it. In the first stanza in
the poem, the author compares a free bird to the white population during times of discrimination. In
the first two lines, the author says, The free bird leaps / on the back of the wind... (lines 1 2). The
author is talking about how whites thought they were better than other races. In line four it says, ...till
the current ends... describes how no opportunities were left for the blacks (line 3). The author gets
across how the free bird, which is a metaphor for the white race, has no problems. In the seventh line
she talks about how the free bird claims the sky. It talks about the freedom of flying, and of being able
to make decisions for yourself. It also shows how the white race has the boldness to unfairly own and
govern society. In the second stanza, the author discusses the actions of the

Summary Of Let The Punishment Fit The Crime By Robert Blecker
As Robert Blecker, a Professor of Economics and American University, says, An unpleasant life in
prison, a quick but painful death...can help restore a moral balance (Blecker). Some people agree with
the death penalty because of moral fairness; however, some people oppose the death penalty because
of family relationship, financial costs with education, false conviction, bias and religious perspective.
In the article With the Death Penalty, Let the Punishment Fit the Crime, the author Robert Blecker
argues about which method of execution would best fit the crime and the unequal situation in prison.
Although Blecker explains the reason of death penalty and discusses about choosing better method of
execution, based on the research, I oppose

Is Procrastination Is More Popular Among College Students
The definition of limit according to Dictionary.com is The final, utmost, or furthest boundary or point
as to extent, amount, continuance, procedure . The definition of distraction as stated by the
Psychology Dictionary is An interruption to attention or anything that draws attention away from the
primary task . While time is the enemy of a procrastinator, distraction is its best friend. One of the
main reasons as to why procrastination is more popular among college students today than it was fifty
years ago is because of technology, social media to be exact. There is YouTube, Facebook, Twitter,
Instagram, etc. All of these examples play a major role in the act of distractions. In Distraction and

Pan s Labyrinth Essay
Jean Baudrillard s theory of hyperreality focuses on how people have become immersed in the media
and these false replications of reality. These simulacra meaning a fake copy of something become the
central point in our lives. In Pan s Labyrinth, the young protagonist Ofelia creates a simulated world in
her own imagination to escape the reality of her ill mother and having to move in with her cruel new
stepfather, Captain Vidal. This world is a simulation of reality a fantasy world that exists inside the
real world. Ofelia is unable to discern the fake world from the real world, resulting in the audience
also not being able to differentiate between the two, especially as it is told primarily through her
perspective. As the story progresses it becomes more apparent that her world is merely imagined, and
at the end it is still left slightly ambiguous to the audience as to whether it was all Ofelia s imagination
or not. Ofelia lives through the illusory world throughout the majority of the film, up to and after the
real world the original copy is destroyed. It could be considered that we live through our screens just
as Ofelia does through her fantasy esque world. However, the difference is that Ofelia s imagined fake
reality is more of a coping mechanism. She escapes into a fabricated ... Show more content on

Ofelia contrasts to Ofelia s happiness and fulfillment in the virtual world. The blood dripping down

The War between Scotland and England in the Reign of...
Why did War break out between Scotland and England in the Reign of Edward I?
On the 14th of May 1264, the forces of Simon de Montfort, Gloucester and the Londoners were set
arrayed against the loyalist forces of King Henry III, Richard of Cornwall and Prince Edward (later to
become King Edward I). The loyalists suffered a massive defeat at this Battle of Lewes and among
those captured, aside from Richard of Cornwall and perhaps the King (Prestwich indicates the unsure
nature of the King s capture 46), were the northern barons (Scottish lords) of Balliol, Bruce and
Comyn. (Jenks 132) Prince Edward also became a hostage as part of an exchange after the battle.
These same men who fought together and were held captive by the de Montforts ... Show more

One of these four advisors was John Balliol, father of the future King of Scotland. (Prestwich 26) It is
quite clear that, [families] notable in Scottish history were also notable in England... The Bruces...
were a Yorkshire family, and the Robert Bruce who was Balliol s rival for the Scottish crown in 1292
had served Henry III for twenty years and ended... as chief justice of the English court of king s bench.
(Miller 4) Given that such relationships so closely tied the English and the Scottish leaderships war
was far from anyone s agenda. However, during this time it was not uncommon even for close
relationships to digress towards war. Family lines were built with strategic marriages to link families
together, but they could just as easily lead to arguments and even war, specifically resulting from such
strategic partnerships (or lack there of).
Alexander II King of Scotland had been married to Joan, younger sister to Henry III, but later married
Mary of Coucy (daughter of a great French house) after Joan s death. This new marriage offended
Henry III, not least of all because he was trying to recover French land (Poitou) and gain respect in
continental Europe. (Powicke 586 7) To prevent war a new treaty was made giving the King of Scots
more power, but at the same time asking him not to enter into any alliances hostile to England. This
treaty was cemented by the marriage of Alexander (son of Mary and King Alexander II, who died

I Sit Before You A Self Proclaimed Sustainablatarian
I sit before you a self proclaimed Sustainablatarian. I ve come through a long list of food and lifestyle
choices and here is where I am today.
Many years ago, I heard someone say be true to yourself so I quit eating meat. I had wanted to for a
while, but it s hard to go against the grain; to do other than what our culture tells us is normal . When I
was growing up the hippies from the 60 s were still weirdo s so that s what I learned was the definition
of weird. Since those weird hippies were vegetarians I didn t want to be that. But sometimes it only
takes finally listening to something we ve heard a million times.
My choice was partially a dietary choice. I told myself that if I didn t eat the meat I would have to
supplement my diet was something and hopefully it would be healthier. And partially it was an ethical
choice. I had read Michael Pollen s article Power Steer among other things and knew about how
animals are treated and believe it to be wrong. I don t object to animals dying because that s part of the
cycle of life. Something has to die so the something else can live. I used to say I feel just as guilty
about the broccoli dying as the cow dying. I don t actually feel very guilty about either because I
believe it s the way Mother Nature set up our system.
Over time the dietary choice has melded with the ethical choice. It s healthier for me to eat food that
was raised healthfully. I m still choosing not to eat unhealthy foods and replacing

Trial By Fire Did Daxas Execute An Innocent Man By David...
In David Grann s Trial by Fire: Did Texas Execute an Innocent Man? , published on September 7,
2009, the overall question addressed is whether we should keep the death penalty legal. Grann begins
his argument with his account of the events that occurred on the morning of December 23, 1991 in
Corsicana, Texas. Cameron Todd Willingham, the husband and father of three children awakes to a
blaze of fire in his one story house (I). Willingham exits out the front door and distraughtly tells a
nearby neighbor to call 911. By the time the fire is extinguished, Willingham s children are dead and
arson investigators come to the house to inspect four days later (I). The two investigators conclude
that the fire is arson and it is considered a triple murder committed by Willingham so they bring him
in for questioning. This along with neighborhood witness testimony leads to an arrest, which is
punishable by death under Texas law. Before the trial, the state gives Willingham a plea deal that if he
pleads guilty he will get life in prison avoiding the death penalty (I). Willingham rejects the plea deal
and is found guilty. From there, Grann uses sections II through V to pick holes in the original case of
the prosecution. Findings of Dr. Gerald Hurst give Willingham some sense of hope that his name
might be cleared as an experiment on Lime street is conducted. The intention is to recreate the scene
of a previous arson case similar to Willingham s (IV). In the original findings of the arson
investigators, the only way flashover can occur is by the presence of some sort of accelerant; however,
the experiment shows that flashover can still occur in a wood structured house and these signs of
flashover are similar to the signs of arson
(IV). Willingham s final appeal is denied by the Board of Pardons and Paroles so he is executed on
February 17th, 2006 (Gran V). The central argument Grann proposes in his article is that the death
penalty should be removed because without the implication of clear forensic evidence, we can never
be truly sure if an individual is guilty. He ends his essay with a statement from the commission
claiming that, There is a chance, however, that Texas could become the first state to acknowledge

Haitian revolution Essay
In 1791 revolution broke out in the French colony of Saint Domingue, later called Haiti. The Haitian
Revolution resounded in communities surrounding the Atlantic Ocean. One of the wealthiest European
outposts in the New World, the Caribbean island s western third had some of the largest and most
brutal slave plantations. Slave laborers cultivated sugar, coffee, indigo, and cotton, and they endured
horrible death rates, requiring constant infusions of slaves from Africa. In 1789 roughly 465,000 black
slaves lived in the French colony on the island, along with fewer than 31,000 whites. In addition, there
were about 23,000 free blacks and mixed race people called gens de couleur, who might own land and

The war became more complicated in 1793 when the British invaded Saint Domingue. The Spanish,
who had a colony on the eastern two thirds of Hispaniola, also entered the fray by supporting armies
of escaped slaves, including a force under the command of an ex slave named Toussaint Louverture.
Pressed on all sides, commissioners from republican France, led by Leger Felicte Sonthonax in the
northern part of the colony, began to extend freedom and citizenship to every slave in summer and
autumn 1793. Inspired by this application of the rights of man, the French National Convention
abolished slavery in all French possessions on February 4, 1794. This action transformed the conflict.
Louverture abandoned the Spanish and began to fight for the French and the freedom of his people.
Over the next couple of years, Louverture consolidated power on the island and created rigid rules that
compelled ex slaves to work on plantations so as to make the island productive again. In 1795,
because of events in Europe, the Spanish signed a peace treaty that ceded their colony on the island to
the French. In 1798 Louverture negotiated a treaty with the British, convincing them to leave the
island and promising not to support any slave rebellions in British colonies. He also sought to develop
commercial relations with the United States, even as the Quasi War (1798 1800) broke out with
France, by sending Joseph Bunel to Philadelphia. Bunel was so successful that he dined

that are representative of the population. There are mainly two kinds of sampling namely probability
and non probability sampling (Sekaran and Bougie, 2009). A probability sample is a sample in which
every element of the population has a known and equal likelihood of being selected. Non probability
sample is any sample in which little or no attempt is made to get a representative cross section of the
population (Lamb et al. 2013).
This study made use of non random sampling. A non random sampling method is one where each
member of the population does not have a known or calculable non zero probability of being selected
(Marchevsky, 2000). The response rate of the questionnaire was low as expected at 26. 08 %. Of the
46 companies which were sent, only 12 completed questionnaires could be collected. A request for
interview was also sent to these companies of which only three gave permission and with whom
interviews were conducted.

Charge Of The Light Brigade
In the poem The Charge of the Light Brigade , written by Alfred, Lord Tennyson, it tells a story about
a group of six hundred soldiers who rode into Death Valley under their commander, Major General
James Brudenell. No soldier was discouraged or questioned their commander, even though the
soldiers knew they were entering a death trap. The question to ask is; should there have been a
discussion about other tactics the soldiers could have used instead of going straight into their enemies
fire?
The poem explains what happened upon the event from the noble men beginning their march to the
last fallen. Within the first stanza, it states the six hundred soldiers rode horseback into the battle field
to retrieve their guns. In the next few stanzas,

Ford Motor Company Of Australia
Ford Motor, Australia remains as one of the popular automobile companies in Australia. The company
is an auxiliary of Ford Motor Company, a global automotive company that builds and markets
automobiles in various continents of the world. Over the years, the company has increased its
investment in the automobile industry through designing new automobile brands to fit the different
segments of its business. The company has done this through increased investment on research and
development, as well as, in marketing. Effective marketing of its automobile products has made the

In essence, this market condition makes it necessary for the company to work hard to enforce its
corporate marketing objectives (Wilkins Hill, 2011).
More so, the corporate objectives of Ford Australia lead logically to the marketing objectives. The
company has successfully organized its management systems in such a way to facilitate effective sales
and marketing of the products across the different market segments. It is critical to look at the
effectiveness of its market strategy both in the short and long term with the objective to keep the
company abreast with potential challenges, and opportunities that are presented to its business.
Through the critical review of its marketing strategy, then vital elements as regards its future growth
and development can be developed. Through such analysis, the company s management can draw key
lessons helpful of making the company achieve its marketing objectives.
The inclusion of environmental management systems and value at Ford Australia plays a critical role
to the marketing (Ottman, 2011). This is important in perspective of the high level of knowledge and
consumers awareness on environmental matters. Most of the local consumers would not want to
associate with companies that have zero concerns for the environment (Polonsky Mintu Wimsatt,
1995). In other words, the marketing concept as practiced by Ford Australia may be viewed as a part
of the broad social responsibility policy

Why The Longview Drug Education Program Should Have A...
The researcher will use the population of Longview, Missouri to collect the data for this program
evaluation. The current population will be pulled from seven public schools and three private schools.
The population will be approximately 4,000 students from public and private schools on the Longview
area. The methods that will be used to collect this data will be the use of a survey, focus groups, and
historical data collected from local law enforcement and the board of education. The data will be
collected pre program implementation and post implementation for comparison purposes. The
researcher s direction of this study is to develop sample sizes that will represent the population of
students in grades K 12th grades. The methodology used to identify this population will be purposive
sampling. Purposive sampling is when a researcher picks the participants on purpose, as they are
considered the most appropriate for the study. As noted earlier, the purpose of this study is to
determine whether the Longview Drug Education program will have a positive or negative impact on
students drug use. Therefore, participants must be in the city of Longview school system and be in
grades K 12th grade. Due to the time restraints and cost issue, the survey will be only distributed to
the children meeting the earlier criteria. The survey will include question pertaining the objectives of
the program. For the purpose of this evaluation, the researcher elected to do web based survey.

How Unionism Has Impacted the Airline Industry in Us
How unionism has impacted the Airline industry in US
Penn State Harrisburg
Abstract In the wake of a sizable slump in demand driven by economic downturns, terrorism attacks
(especially the events of September 11, 2001) as well as increased competition from low cost carriers,
many incumbent U.S. airlines have been attempting a fundamental restructuring of their operations.
Many would argue that a central element in this restructuring should include an overhaul of the labor
management relationship. This paper presents information regarding labor unions in the airline
industry of the US, in order to analyze and then summarize main points of how they have impacted
and affected this industry overall.
1. Overview of the air ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There were major concerns regarding increased industry concentration of a few dominant carriers
controlling the market. As the airlines began to face a deregulatory reality of competition and the
resulting pressure on cost containment during the early 1980s, airline management put pressure on
labor to provide the airlines with financial relief, in order to survive. Reducing labor costs appeared to
be the strategy of choice for many carriers in the drive to maintain a competitive position in the
industry if not only for mere survival. Despite the carrier pressure on airline labor in the deregulatory
era, the airline industry remained one of the strongholds of traditional industrial relations. Union
density was estimated to be at 39.5 percent in the late deregulatory period between 1983 and 1997. On
the other hand, representation rates reached almost 50 percent during this regulatory period 5(Hirsh
and Macpherson, 2000). Many believe that deregulation leads to an erosion of union effectiveness,
while regulation leads to increase in union effectiveness. Despite the change in regulation of the
industry, relations and negotiations between airlines and their labor unions continues to be conducted
in accordance with the requirements of the Railway Labor Act (RLA). This act was passed in 1926
after the railroads and their unions agreed to set in place a legal framework that

Advantages Of Online Edu Moodle

Over the last few decades online education has vastly grown especially in the USA. Online education
has became popular among students of all ages. Universities have increased their enrollment numbers
by creating distance learning programs. Online University programs are a convenient way for students
to further their education and has the benefit of not having to go to a geographical location. Students
can access the courses without losing any quality of education that is being taught in on site degree
programs. Many Univiersities now offer online degree programs as gives the opportunity to students
who cannot for some reason attend regular hours further their education.

A Research On Anxiety And Phobias
Anxiety and phobias can be induced via mechanisms involving a variety of stimuli. Fear inducing
stimuli can trigger the formation of fear memories via classical conditioning that can be
reconsolidated if the reminder of the stimuli or the specific fear associated stimulus itself is present.
Recently, as well as over years of research, efforts have been made to understand the manner in which
the fear memory pathways are consolidated and paved with the goal of learning how to inhibit or
undermine the reconsolidation of such pathways. Knowledge obtained through experimentation
involving a noradrenergic beta blocker, propranolol HCl, has demonstrated that this pharmacological
antagonist acting against beta adrenergic receptors present in the amygdala can disrupt the fear
memory pathway. Although this information has been helpful in understanding the circuitry of fear
memories and the role of inhibition in such pathways, it has also led to more questions pertaining to
clinical applications of drugs such as propranolol HCl. In fact, Marieke Soeter and Merel Kindt sought
to understand the role of propranolol HCl in impeding the reconsolidation of fear memories in a group
of spider phobic women in a recent study. Throughout this analysis, the purpose, research methods,
results, conclusions, potential problems, and future directions of this study will be considered. To
begin, production of the study required knowledge of fear memory and its role in the brain. As with

Evaluation Of An Action Research Project
Evaluation of an Action Research Project
In action research, an individual or a group of colleagues applies scientific methods to real life
problems or issues occurring within a work or educational environment (Conscious Educating,
2009a). According to Dr. Waddell, action research seeks to accomplish two goals, which are to
stimulate learning and make a difference (Waddell, 2007). Teachers, researchers, and administrators
all evaluate, investigate, and analyze problems or concepts in hopes of improving them and thereby
benefiting students, the classroom environment, and their own teaching practices.

According to Ary et al. (2015), Action research allows educators to focus on an issue that directly
relates to their learning environment (p. 549).
Step 2, Plan, involves taking action gathering data or information by observing or monitoring the
effects. Ms. Senter set out to find information regarding a fantasy unit. Through her research, she was
able to locate ready made units on science fiction but not on fantasy. The benefit of action research is
that it encourages collaboration and the development of learning communities (Ary et al., 2015, p.
550). Ms. Senter collaborated with fellow English teachers, then realized that she still needs more
resources and support. Accordingly, she drew on the local library for extra support, deepening her
knowledge and gaining materials to help her design her own nine week instructional unit on fantasy to
add to her eleventh grade literature curriculum.
Step 3, Act, sees the practitioner implementing a plan of action. Ms. Senter has completed her unit on
fantasy and has developed her unit based on four major themes: (1) fantasy as a unique literary form
that emphasizes imagination and magic, with stories often set in an imaginary place; (2) fantasy s use
of elements also found in other novels (character, setting, plot, theme); (3) fantasy stories multiple
levels of meaning; and (4) fantasy s use of the usual pattern of narrative progression (background,
build up, climax, resolution). Ms. Senter selected

The Effects Of Second Hand Smoke On Children
Second Hand Smoke
Do people know second hand smoke not only affects the person smoking, but it also affects the people
around them? Not everyone is aware of the risks of second hand smoke nor how it can effect their
future. Second hand smoke is an issue that affects everyone and everybody around it such as unborn
children, children, adults, non smokers and should be avoided as much as possible.
What exactly is second hand smoke? Second hand smoke is a combination of burning tobacco and the
exhaled smoke. Not only is first hand smoke harmful, but second hand smoke is as bad if not worse
for a person. Smoke in general smells badly, can irritate people s eyes or nose, sticks to clothing or
materials, can make someone s hair smell, and other things as well. Everyone should avoid second
hand smoke as much as possible.
First comes the unborn children that are affected by adults that expose them to second hand smoke.
Women who smoke during pregnancy risk their unborn child by smoking and their child receiving the
second hand smoke in the womb. Second hand smoke can cause birth defects, low birth weight, SIDS,
and many other problems. One birth defects includes clef lip or pallet caused by second hand smoke
while in the womb. Women who smoke while pregnant risk health issues that are just unfair to the
unborn child who cannot make its own choices yet.

About the Musician On October 20th, an interview was held with Mark Stransky at UnityPoint
Meriter Hospital in the chapel. Stransky has worked in health care for over fourteen years doing
fitness and physical therapy work. Stransky has been holding events at UnityPoint Meriter Hospital
called the Music and Healing Events. According to Stransky, he started these events, three years ago,
it was August of 2014 and the reason I did that is because I ve always been playing piano and I would

Stransky played the song, Walk this Way, by Aerosmith to motivate the patient. This song went on to
being her theme song as she continued her rehabilitation. About the Music It is in these events that
Stransky performs all original pieces on the piano by memory. These pieces that are written by
Stransky, have to do with past experiences, nature, or people he holds dear to him. The pieces he
writes, he wants to be relatable for all and any who decide to come listen at one of these events. At the
event, Stransky will then give a brief overview of each piece discussing the meaning behind the song.
With having a set list for each concert, Stransky has to pick which song he will perform for prior to
the event. When asked in regards how does he decide what songs to put on his set list, Stransky
responded by saying, I want music that people can relate to on a number of levels so I know that they
re going through some medical issues that are really difficult so I want to allow them to feel that sort
of sadness and difficulty of that but I don t want to bring them so down the hill they can t get up again
so then I ll put in some pieces that are kind of bouncy and uplifting and encouraging and then they
seem to respond to that mix. This makes Stransky s performances personalized to each event held. The
difference of temp in songs, allow the audience to experience many emotions throughout the concert.

Shi Huangdi s Analysis
The Zhou dynasty s decline allowed city states to rise in power. This culminated with the Warring
States period and the rise of the Qin dynasty. The King of the Qin, Shi Huangdi, established himself as
the first Emperor of unitary China. The Emperor used the mountain inscriptions to describe his
achievements and justify his rule. How the Qin Emperor defines his rule allows for effective
comparison between China, Rome and Babylon. The mountain inscriptions reveal the effect that the
Warring States period had on Chinese society and by affect the ideal of the new sovereign.

Ebrey explains in chapter three the Mandate of Heaven...became intrinsic to imperial ideology, never
publically questioned even in later dynasties. (pp. 79) There are important connections to be made to
Augustus Res Gestae here. While Augustus was clearly a new kind of ruler, much of his legitimacy
came from either Julius Caesar or his restoration of the senatorial order. In this respect Shi Huangdi,
like Augustus in Rome, established the philosophical basis for the rule of his successors. Similarly to
Augustus, the Qin Emperor also describes himself as a restorer of stability and peace following an era
of constant civil war: warfare will not arise again! Disaster and harm are exterminated and
erased...people live in peace and stability. (pp.14) The Chinese, very much like their Roman
counterparts, were exhausted after years of conflict, thus the restoration of peace and stability was a
major source of legitimacy. This said there are also

amount of time to change the story just a little to coincide with other officers testimony. In one article

Using The Production Possibilities Frontiers For Women And...
Name: Instructors Name: Course: Date Due: Question 1 Using the production possibilities frontiers
for WOMEN and MEN provided below, explain which group has a comparative advantage over which
type of Goods. Men earn and continue to earn higher incomes than women and thus have a
comparative advantage over women. Women have a comparative advantage over men on Childcare
and can be justified by their specialization in household chores. Not only does the scientific reasoning
reinforce this sexual division of labor, women s low wages and the assumed comparative advantage in
child care is used to privilege their contribution to human capital. (Himmelweit, Simonetti, Trigg,
2001) What will keep each group from trying to overcharge the other for their specialized product?
Children are an important source of enjoyment for both groups and make a couple specialize during a
relationship and thus prevent each group from overcharging. (Parkman, 2000) What are some of the
barriers to trade that might keep the two groups apart even if there are mutually beneficial gains from
exchange possible? Jobs Demand unexpected overtime and travel and thus keep these two groups
apart as rejecting jobs will make them worse off. NUMBER TWO {60 points}. Suppose there is
market for airfares to Caribbean Beach Vacation Destinations (CBVDs). Consider the following list of
factors which might influence the market for CBVDs: I. A and F occur at the same time The increase

Essay about Down Syndrome
To all parents, a newborn child is a small miracle, perfect and beautiful in every way. However, in
many situations the parents of these miracles learn that their children are not normal. Every year 6,000
parents across the country are informed that their child has a genetic disorder called Down Syndrome (
National Down Syndrome Society, n.d.). Within a matter of minutes parents learn that children with
Down Syndrome can also have a variety of other conditions and disorders, will not develop in the
same way that other children do, and may even have a shorter life span. However, children with Down
Syndrome are happy go lucky children with a kind disposition and a wonderful personality. Also
known as Trisomy 21, Down Syndrome does not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, the easily spotted physical characteristics are not the only symptoms of Down Syndrome;
the symptoms and medical conditions have the potential to go much deeper. Cognitive developmental
delays are extremely common in those who have Down Syndrome. This means that these children are
often slower to learn, be it educational knowledge from school or even learning to walk and talk. As
children, those with Down Syndrome develop more slowly and will often hit major milestones after
other children. In addition, many have shorter attention spans and will behave impulsively.
(http://www.nichd.nih.gov/health/topics/down/conditioninfo/Pages/symptoms.aspx) When listing all
of the symptoms it is easy to believe that those with Down Syndrome are entirely different than those
without the syndrome and cannot function within the normal society. However, this is not true at all.
These individuals may appear slightly different, and many people expect that they have severe
cognitive disabilities. However, Down Syndrome is usually only present with mild cognitive
differences and those with the syndrome can live lives that are just as beneficial as those without.
These people are human beings as well, capable of relationships, being educated, holding jobs, and
acting as normal, playful, and happy children and adults. Down Syndrome is simply a difference in

Dinaw Mengesu s Short Story Home At Last
Has there ever been a time where you felt uncomfortable in your own body or just simply out of
place? Maybe you felt as if you didn t belong in the place you were at? This is how Dinaw Mengestu
describes how he felt in his short story, Home at Last. Dinaw talks about when he discovered these
feelings and what it was like. A time where i can relate to Dinaw Mengestu s story is in the 6th grade.
It was the middle of August, and my first day at Smithville Middle School. I was finally one of the Big
Kids. I wanted to start my middle school years off great and fit in with all the intimidating 7th and 8th
graders. What you wear is a big part of fitting in with new people. On the first day of school, i noticed
all the older girls were wearing makeup and tight stretchy pants that showed off their butts. I decided i
wanted to be exactly like them. That same day after school, i made my mom take me to Zona Rosa to
go shopping. After shopping around for a bit i stopped upon the perfect pair of leggings. The leggings
were pink with blue spots and white stars everywhere. I begged my mom for the leggings and told her
i would die without them. In the end she finally took them up to the register. I was so excited and
could not wait to go to school the next day! ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I paired them up with a light pink shirt and hot pink shoes.I curled my hair in small tight curls and
even put on some makeup, i felt so pretty and grown up. But, that feeling soon stopped when I arrived
at school. I felt extremely awkward and insecure. My new outfit made me stick out like a sore thumb
and people were staring from every direction. I soon realized, i didn t want to stand out, I just wanted
to blend in with everyone. Finally, before lunch I changed into my gym clothes and wore them the rest
of the day. When I got home I pulled the leggings out of my bag and stashed them deep in the back of
my closet. To this day those leggings have not been

Consequences related to pleural effusion is the fluid located in the pleural cavity present as a space
that is occupying mass, which causes a decrease in the lung expansion. The decrease of the lung
expansion on that affected side is proportionate with the amount of fluid that is collected. This
therefore results to hypoxia, dyspnea, and pleuritic pain (Saguil et al., 2014). Pulmonary infiltrates is
an hypersensitivity reaction, lung infiltration, characterized by infiltration of the alveoli
(bronchoalveolar), with eosinophilia and large mononuclear cells, edema, extensive infiltrates in the
lung zones leading to inflammation of the lungs (Tzilas et al.,2009). From a pathophysiological
perspective, the term infiltrate refers to an abnormal substance that accumulates gradually within cells
or body tissues or any substance or type of cell that occurs within or spreads as through the
interstitium and/or alveoli of the lung, that is foreign to the lung parenchyma, or that accumulates in
greater than normal quantity within it. (Patterson et al., 2012). Consequences result in prolong illness

Personal Family History
My talk from church 29 July 2012
July 29, 2012 at 2:19pm
I have a family tree with branches by the dozens. I have grandpas. I have grandmas. I have uncles,
aunts, and cousins. When it s reunion time, no matter what the weather, it is such a happy day, when
the family gets together. Moses 6:5 8 and again in verse 46 This history of the dealings of God with
his people and the experiences they had constitutes our present scripture. It is nothing more or less
than sacred family history. Because it was written under the influence of the Spirit of the Holy Ghost,
it became scripture (Theodore M. Burton, The Inspiration of a Family Record, Ensign, Jan. 1977, 17).
President Spencer W. Kimball said: I urge all of the people of this church to ... Show more content on

Just stopped. Not one word. I know why I was asked to give this talk. Pick up the pen, Sydney, and
write. Elder Joseph Fielding Smith told us of specific information we should include in our family
records: It is necessary for us to keep an accurate record of our families and record accurately the
dates of births, marriages and deaths, and ordinances and everything that is vital. Every important
event in our lives should be placed in a record, by us individually (Doctrines of Salvation, comp.
Bruce R. McConkie, 3 vols. [1954 56], 2:204). For Christmas this past year, we gave each of our
grown children a thought provoking game of sorts. Each family was given a small container
containing 90 folded slips of paper with questions on them, and a blank journal. The questions were
geared to spark ideas for a family history. The journal was to write down their memories that the
questions brought up. Several years ago, our branch had a fall harvest dinner and opened our building
to members and non members alike for a family history open house. Displays were set up all over the
building. Each room had ideas, speakers, displays, games, videos, and information regarding

The Waffle House Essay
The Waffle House
It s late one Friday night. You, accompanied by a select group of your closest friends, drive down the
interstate, wanting desperately to be at home in the warmth of your bed. Suddenly, the lot of us sees
the sign. Like a beacon it is, summoning us to it like proverbial moths to a flame. Forgetting about the
need for sleep, we turn onto the off ramp, a string of drool dripping down and off of your chin. Waffle
House, we say with a gleam in our eyes, we have arrived. What follows will be one of the most
important events of our adult lives: a tireless ritual continuing into infinity all across the nation s good
expanse.
The Waffle House is without a doubt one of the last surviving institutions of ... Show more content on

Our struggle, however, is forgotten once the waitress finally arrives, casually sauntering over to us
with looks of total indifference. She stuffs her loose and falling hair back up into her gaudy, burgundy
cloth hat.
So, whaddyallhave? she asks, waiting for us to decipher her strange and jumbled dialect. More often
than not, the only reason we come here is to order what Waffle House is most famous for, and that (as
if you needed to be told) is coffee. Waffle House coffee is a mystical brew with high caffeine content
and an identifiable taste. No other restaurant s coffee is as desirable, because only Waffle House s has
that real man, industrial strength flavor. Grumpily, the waitress stomps away, aware that her tip will be
far less than generous.
Anyone who knows anything about the politics behind the Waffle House experience also knows that
there are definite rules and guidelines that dictate how the course of events is to be played out during
the span of a single visit. This routine begins with the arrival of the much anticipated cups of coffee,
continues with pleasant conversation and playful intercourse amongst the customers, and culminates
with the paying of the check and the inevitable departure. Our Waffle House chef makes the claim that
the people who frequent the restaurant are, for the most part, regulars and that they all seem to

Military Ethical Dilemmas
During a Pentagon news brief on February 7, 2014, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel stated, Ethics and
character are absolute values that we cannot take for granted. They must be constantly reinforced. It is
the responsibility of all of us all of us who ask for the trust and confidence of the American people to
ensure these values are imbued in all our people and we all live up to them. Confronted with

Army Maj. Gen. Dennis Laich. America gives us their sons and daughters, and we ve failed to
discharge the responsibility to take care of them. (NPR) How is it that the greatest fighting force in the
world has become so strickened with sexual abuse cases that even their own are questioning the US
Military s ability to properly handle these cases? With standards, regulations, and manuals to cover
every just about every aspect of life for a soldier, marine, airman, and seaman it can be difficult to
understand how these actions are possible among service members of any rank or branch. Most of
these standards and regulations have been in place for many, many decades, and are common
knowledge among soldiers today. As the greatest combat force in the world we are forced to ask
ourselves what has changed so much in the US Military that sexual assault reports have climbed 129%

Factors That Affect Soil Development
Factors Affecting Soil Development
Studies on the research of soil have shown that the profile of soils is influenced by five factors
interacting with each there. These are: parent material, climate, topography, organisms, and time.
Parent material:
This refers to the mineral material, or organic material from which the soil is formed. Soils will carry
the characteristics of its parent material such as color, texture, structure, mineral composition and so
on. For example, if soils are formed from an area with large rocks (parent rocks) of red sandstone, the
soils will also be red in color and have the same feel as its parent material.
Time:
Soils can take many years to form. Younger soils have some characteristics from their parent ... Show

It also means more runoff, more percolation and more water erosion. They all help to determine the
kind of soils in an area.
Relief:
This refers to the landscape position and the slopes it has. Steep, long slopes mean water will run
down faster and potentially erode the surfaces of slopes. The effect will be poor soils on the slopes,
and richer deposits at the foot of the slopes. Also, slopes may be exposed to more direct sunlight,
which may dry out soil moisture and render it less fertile.
Organisms:
The source and richness of organic matter is down to the living things (plants and animals) that live on
and in the soils. Plants in particular, provide lots of vegetative residue that are added to soils. Their
roots also hold the soils and protect them from wind and water erosion. They shelter the soils from the
sun and other environmental conditions, helping the soils to retain the needed moisture for chemical
and biological reactions. Fungi, bacteria, insects, earthworms, and burrowing animals help with soil
aeration. Worms help breakdown organic matter and aid decomposition. Animal droppings, dead
insects and animals result in more decaying organic matter. Microorganisms also help with mineral
and nutrient cycling and chemical reactions.
The Water Cycle
The water cycle, also called the hydrologic cycle, operates similarly to biogeochemical cycles in
which plant and animal nutrients move through the atmosphere, the earth, and through living things.

  • 2. Electoral Thresholds and the Representation of Women Essay Electoral Thresholds and the Representation of Women There are large cross national differences in the percentage of women in legislatures. Institutional arrangement is a considerable explanatory factor in the disparity in women s representation, and many mechanisms have been implemented to increase parity. Within PR systems, electoral systems are a way to try to increase the representation of women. Previous studies have linked thresholds to increased party magnitude and in turn to increased women s representation, but there have not been extensive studies to directly link thresholds to women s representation. This paper analyzes the impact of thresholds directly, finding that the relationship between thresholds and women s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Not all proportional electoral systems are created equal. Various institutional tweaks can alter the woman friendliness of a system. Electoral thresholds provide a strong example of how particular rules can affect the membership of a governing body. There is debate regarding the effect and importance of thresholds, and this paper adds to that discourse by directly examining the impact of thresholds on women. An electoral threshold is the percentage of votes that must be achieved in order to gain access to the legislature. The relationship between thresholds and women s representation has not been conclusively studied. In theory, high electoral thresholds are seen to decrease the number of parties admitted to the legislature, thereby increasing party magnitude and women s representation. At the same time, low electoral thresholds may be important to women s representation. Low thresholds allow new, small parties access to the legislature. These parties may be leftist and friendly to women, such as Green parties, and increase the number of women brought into the legislature. Despite these conflicting theories, there has not been a study directly examining the linkage between electoral threshold and women s representation. Does such a relationship exist? And if there is a relationship, why should we even care and what does that imply? The answers to these questions are extremely important, especially since electoral thresholds are ... This often leads to problematic social media use. Problematic social networking is when networking becomes an addiction and is harmful to the individuals. The adolescent age group is between the ages of 12 and 18. To put this into reference this is the middle school to high school group. At this age, they need eight hours of sleep to be healthy. Problematic networking causes a decrease in sleep in adolescents and in turn, it is having a negative effect on their health resulting in issues in school. Dr. Woods, who also has her Ph.D. in psychology, studied how social media related to sleep quality and a variety of other issues. The study Dr. Woods preformed consisted of 467 Scottish 11 15 year old s completing a questionnaire in class. According to Dr. Woods, 54% of the time spent online by teens is spent on social media (Woods). It is an issue that more than half the time students are online they are on social media because if that time was cut down then problematic social networking would no longer cut into the adolescent s sleep. I have noticed in my own personal life that being on social media is a compulsion. I have closed an app because I had gone through everything and my first instinct was to open it back up. I personally went through the compulsive part. The identification of trends is another way people are now recognizing this is an issue. Dr. Banyai used the BSMAS scale and found that the most at risk individuals were females who used the internet and social media for more than thirty hours per week (7). Dr. Banyai s findings are significant because there are now trends to be seen. Dr. Polos, a man who has his M.D. and Ph.D. in microbiology and immunology, formed a similar at risk group in his cross sectional study. His study was looking at the impact of cell phone use on sleep time. His study was comprised of 3139 surveys done by students. Dr. Polos introduced that females had a higher rate of insomnia and ... But, we are greeted many times throughout those days with choices we have to make. Most of those choices we make are built by the structure and beliefs that our parents and loved ones have passed onto us. Looking into how we were brought up can we really say what s right or wrong? Throughout history the break between African Americans and whites has been evident at many times. African Americans were treated heartlessly, and unfairly. They struggled everyday to find work in a prejudice world that forced them into submission. Through her inspirational and powerful words in the poem, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings , the much loved poet Maya Angelou uses poetic devices like rhyme, alliteration, metaphors and imagery, to encourage African Americans to find their voice and earn the respect that they deserved. Imagine reaching for the sky, and actually being able to touch it. In the first stanza in the poem, the author compares a free bird to the white population during times of discrimination. In the first two lines, the author says, The free bird leaps / on the back of the wind... (lines 1 2). The author is talking about how whites thought they were better than other races. In line four it says, ...till the current ends... describes how no opportunities were left for the blacks (line 3). The author gets across how the free bird, which is a metaphor for the white race, has no problems. In the seventh line she talks about how the free bird claims the sky. It talks about the freedom of flying, and of being able to make decisions for yourself. It also shows how the white race has the boldness to unfairly own and govern society. • 12. Pan s Labyrinth Essay Jean Baudrillard s theory of hyperreality focuses on how people have become immersed in the media and these false replications of reality. These simulacra meaning a fake copy of something become the central point in our lives. In Pan s Labyrinth, the young protagonist Ofelia creates a simulated world in her own imagination to escape the reality of her ill mother and having to move in with her cruel new stepfather, Captain Vidal. This world is a simulation of reality a fantasy world that exists inside the real world. Ofelia is unable to discern the fake world from the real world, resulting in the audience also not being able to differentiate between the two, especially as it is told primarily through her perspective. As the story progresses it becomes more apparent that her world is merely imagined, and at the end it is still left slightly ambiguous to the audience as to whether it was all Ofelia s imagination or not. Ofelia lives through the illusory world throughout the majority of the film, up to and after the real world the original copy is destroyed. It could be considered that we live through our screens just as Ofelia does through her fantasy esque world. On the 14th of May 1264, the forces of Simon de Montfort, Gloucester and the Londoners were set arrayed against the loyalist forces of King Henry III, Richard of Cornwall and Prince Edward (later to become King Edward I). The loyalists suffered a massive defeat at this Battle of Lewes and among those captured, aside from Richard of Cornwall and perhaps the King (Prestwich indicates the unsure nature of the King s capture 46), were the northern barons (Scottish lords) of Balliol, Bruce and Comyn. In David Grann s Trial by Fire: Did Texas Execute an Innocent Man? , published on September 7, 2009, the overall question addressed is whether we should keep the death penalty legal. Grann begins his argument with his account of the events that occurred on the morning of December 23, 1991 in Corsicana, Texas. Cameron Todd Willingham, the husband and father of three children awakes to a blaze of fire in his one story house (I). Willingham exits out the front door and distraughtly tells a nearby neighbor to call 911. By the time the fire is extinguished, Willingham s children are dead and arson investigators come to the house to inspect four days later (I). The two investigators conclude that the fire is arson and it is considered a triple murder committed by Willingham so they bring him in for questioning. This along with neighborhood witness testimony leads to an arrest, which is punishable by death under Texas law. Before the trial, the state gives Willingham a plea deal that if he pleads guilty he will get life in prison avoiding the death penalty (I). Willingham rejects the plea deal and is found guilty. From there, Grann uses sections II through V to pick holes in the original case of the prosecution. Findings of Dr. Gerald Hurst give Willingham some sense of hope that his name might be cleared as an experiment on Lime street is conducted. The intention is to recreate the scene of a previous arson case similar to Willingham s (IV). In the original findings of the arson investigators, the only way flashover can occur is by the presence of some sort of accelerant; however, the experiment shows that flashover can still occur in a wood structured house and these signs of flashover are similar to the signs of arson (IV). Willingham s final appeal is denied by the Board of Pardons and Paroles so he is executed on February 17th, 2006 (Gran V). The central argument Grann proposes in his article is that the death penalty should be removed because without the implication of clear forensic evidence, we can never be truly sure if an individual is guilty. • 20. Haitian revolution Essay In 1791 revolution broke out in the French colony of Saint Domingue, later called Haiti. The Haitian Revolution resounded in communities surrounding the Atlantic Ocean. One of the wealthiest European outposts in the New World, the Caribbean island s western third had some of the largest and most brutal slave plantations. Slave laborers cultivated sugar, coffee, indigo, and cotton, and they endured horrible death rates, requiring constant infusions of slaves from Africa. In 1789 roughly 465,000 black slaves lived in the French colony on the island, along with fewer than 31,000 whites. The war became more complicated in 1793 when the British invaded Saint Domingue. The Spanish, who had a colony on the eastern two thirds of Hispaniola, also entered the fray by supporting armies of escaped slaves, including a force under the command of an ex slave named Toussaint Louverture. Pressed on all sides, commissioners from republican France, led by Leger Felicte Sonthonax in the northern part of the colony, began to extend freedom and citizenship to every slave in summer and autumn 1793. Inspired by this application of the rights of man, the French National Convention abolished slavery in all French possessions on February 4, 1794. This action transformed the conflict. Louverture abandoned the Spanish and began to fight for the French and the freedom of his people. Over the next couple of years, Louverture consolidated power on the island and created rigid rules that compelled ex slaves to work on plantations so as to make the island productive again. In 1795, because of events in Europe, the Spanish signed a peace treaty that ceded their colony on the island to the French. In 1798 Louverture negotiated a treaty with the British, convincing them to leave the island and promising not to support any slave rebellions in British colonies. Sampling And Non Random Sampling Sampling As the population of this study was the Indian SMEs in Europe which were thousands in numbers; it was notpractical to reach all of them within the timeframe available to complete this dissertation. This made it inevitable to undertake sampling. Sampling is undertaken in order to select units or members that are representative of the population. There are mainly two kinds of sampling namely probability and non probability sampling (Sekaran and Bougie, 2009). A probability sample is a sample in which every element of the population has a known and equal likelihood of being selected. Non probability sample is any sample in which little or no attempt is made to get a representative cross section of the population (Lamb et al. 2013). This study made use of non random sampling. A non random sampling method is one where each member of the population does not have a known or calculable non zero probability of being selected (Marchevsky, 2000). The response rate of the questionnaire was low as expected at 26. 08 %. Of the 46 companies which were sent, only 12 completed questionnaires could be collected. How Unionism Has Impacted the Airline Industry in Us How unionism has impacted the Airline industry in US Penn State Harrisburg Abstract In the wake of a sizable slump in demand driven by economic downturns, terrorism attacks (especially the events of September 11, 2001) as well as increased competition from low cost carriers, many incumbent U.S. airlines have been attempting a fundamental restructuring of their operations. Many would argue that a central element in this restructuring should include an overhaul of the labor management relationship. This paper presents information regarding labor unions in the airline industry of the US, in order to analyze and then summarize main points of how they have impacted and affected this industry overall. 1. Overview of the air ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There were major concerns regarding increased industry concentration of a few dominant carriers controlling the market. As the airlines began to face a deregulatory reality of competition and the resulting pressure on cost containment during the early 1980s, airline management put pressure on labor to provide the airlines with financial relief, in order to survive. Reducing labor costs appeared to be the strategy of choice for many carriers in the drive to maintain a competitive position in the industry if not only for mere survival. Despite the carrier pressure on airline labor in the deregulatory era, the airline industry remained one of the strongholds of traditional industrial relations. Union density was estimated to be at 39.5 percent in the late deregulatory period between 1983 and 1997. On the other hand, representation rates reached almost 50 percent during this regulatory period 5(Hirsh and Macpherson, 2000). Many believe that deregulation leads to an erosion of union effectiveness, while regulation leads to increase in union effectiveness. Despite the change in regulation of the industry, relations and negotiations between airlines and their labor unions continues to be conducted in accordance with the requirements of the Railway Labor Act (RLA). Fear inducing stimuli can trigger the formation of fear memories via classical conditioning that can be reconsolidated if the reminder of the stimuli or the specific fear associated stimulus itself is present. Recently, as well as over years of research, efforts have been made to understand the manner in which the fear memory pathways are consolidated and paved with the goal of learning how to inhibit or undermine the reconsolidation of such pathways. Knowledge obtained through experimentation involving a noradrenergic beta blocker, propranolol HCl, has demonstrated that this pharmacological antagonist acting against beta adrenergic receptors present in the amygdala can disrupt the fear memory pathway. Although this information has been helpful in understanding the circuitry of fear memories and the role of inhibition in such pathways, it has also led to more questions pertaining to clinical applications of drugs such as propranolol HCl. In fact, Marieke Soeter and Merel Kindt sought to understand the role of propranolol HCl in impeding the reconsolidation of fear memories in a group of spider phobic women in a recent study. Recommending this book to anyone I am sure that they would read further more into the topic as well as I. The two books I ve choose to read Goddesses, Whores, Wifes, and Slaves where non fiction; written by Sarah B Pomeroy. Thoughtout the book Sarah Pomeroy illustrates the purpose of writing the book was to show the social history of women in ancient history. The time of the book was around 1500 years, from Bronze Age Greece to the late Roman empire. I believe she wanted to educate today s age about what really happened in the women s society during ancient history. With writing this book Sarah Pomeroy truly wrote this to reflect the critical insights of modern feminism. In my opinion I personally think that Sarah Pomeroy could be a feminist of ... • 42. Pros And Cons Of Police Report I think that the pros and cons of police using reports when they testify is that one pro is that they will be informed on what all happened and not just their side to the story. I also think that is a con at the same time since they are able to use their reports to be prepared and that also gives them ample amount of time to change the story just a little to coincide with other officers testimony. In one article that I found it stated that a homicide detective said he routinely takes his case files home at least one week before trial and reviews everything. A robbery detective said he likes to study the file and try to plan how to respond to questions I think will be asked. It s like chess: What move is the defense attorney going to make? ... Name: Instructors Name: Course: Date Due: Question 1 Using the production possibilities frontiers for WOMEN and MEN provided below, explain which group has a comparative advantage over which type of Goods. Men earn and continue to earn higher incomes than women and thus have a comparative advantage over women. Women have a comparative advantage over men on Childcare and can be justified by their specialization in household chores. Not only does the scientific reasoning reinforce this sexual division of labor, women s low wages and the assumed comparative advantage in child care is used to privilege their contribution to human capital. (Himmelweit, Simonetti, Trigg, 2001) What will keep each group from trying to overcharge the other for their specialized product? Children are an important source of enjoyment for both groups and make a couple specialize during a relationship and thus prevent each group from overcharging. However, in many situations the parents of these miracles learn that their children are not normal. Every year 6,000 parents across the country are informed that their child has a genetic disorder called Down Syndrome ( National Down Syndrome Society, n.d.). Within a matter of minutes parents learn that children with Down Syndrome can also have a variety of other conditions and disorders, will not develop in the same way that other children do, and may even have a shorter life span. However, children with Down Syndrome are happy go lucky children with a kind disposition and a wonderful personality. Also known as Trisomy 21, Down Syndrome does not ... However, the easily spotted physical characteristics are not the only symptoms of Down Syndrome; the symptoms and medical conditions have the potential to go much deeper. Cognitive developmental delays are extremely common in those who have Down Syndrome. This means that these children are often slower to learn, be it educational knowledge from school or even learning to walk and talk. As children, those with Down Syndrome develop more slowly and will often hit major milestones after other children. In addition, many have shorter attention spans and will behave impulsively. (http://www.nichd.nih.gov/health/topics/down/conditioninfo/Pages/symptoms.aspx) When listing all of the symptoms it is easy to believe that those with Down Syndrome are entirely different than those without the syndrome and cannot function within the normal society. However, this is not true at all. These individuals may appear slightly different, and many people expect that they have severe cognitive disabilities. However, Down Syndrome is usually only present with mild cognitive differences and those with the syndrome can live lives that are just as beneficial as those without. These people are human beings as well, capable of relationships, being educated, holding jobs, and acting as normal, playful, and happy children and adults. Maybe you felt as if you didn t belong in the place you were at? This is how Dinaw Mengestu describes how he felt in his short story, Home at Last. Dinaw talks about when he discovered these feelings and what it was like. A time where i can relate to Dinaw Mengestu s story is in the 6th grade. It was the middle of August, and my first day at Smithville Middle School. I was finally one of the Big Kids. I wanted to start my middle school years off great and fit in with all the intimidating 7th and 8th graders. What you wear is a big part of fitting in with new people. On the first day of school, i noticed all the older girls were wearing makeup and tight stretchy pants that showed off their butts. I decided i wanted to be exactly like them. That same day after school, i made my mom take me to Zona Rosa to go shopping. After shopping around for a bit i stopped upon the perfect pair of leggings. The leggings were pink with blue spots and white stars everywhere. I begged my mom for the leggings and told her i would die without them. In the end she finally took them up to the register. Moses 6:5 8 and again in verse 46 This history of the dealings of God with his people and the experiences they had constitutes our present scripture. It is nothing more or less than sacred family history. Because it was written under the influence of the Spirit of the Holy Ghost, it became scripture (Theodore M. Elder Joseph Fielding Smith told us of specific information we should include in our family records: It is necessary for us to keep an accurate record of our families and record accurately the dates of births, marriages and deaths, and ordinances and everything that is vital. Every important event in our lives should be placed in a record, by us individually (Doctrines of Salvation, comp. Bruce R. McConkie, 3 vols. [1954 56], 2:204). For Christmas this past year, we gave each of our grown children a thought provoking game of sorts. Each family was given a small container containing 90 folded slips of paper with questions on them, and a blank journal. The questions were geared to spark ideas for a family history. The journal was to write down their memories that the questions brought up. She stuffs her loose and falling hair back up into her gaudy, burgundy cloth hat. So, whaddyallhave? she asks, waiting for us to decipher her strange and jumbled dialect. More often than not, the only reason we come here is to order what Waffle House is most famous for, and that (as if you needed to be told) is coffee. Waffle House coffee is a mystical brew with high caffeine content and an identifiable taste. No other restaurant s coffee is as desirable, because only Waffle House s has that real man, industrial strength flavor. Grumpily, the waitress stomps away, aware that her tip will be far less than generous. Anyone who knows anything about the politics behind the Waffle House experience also knows that there are definite rules and guidelines that dictate how the course of events is to be played out during the span of a single visit. This routine begins with the arrival of the much anticipated cups of coffee, continues with pleasant conversation and playful intercourse amongst the customers, and culminates with the paying of the check and the inevitable departure. • 50. Factors That Affect Soil Development Factors Affecting Soil Development Studies on the research of soil have shown that the profile of soils is influenced by five factors interacting with each there. These are: parent material, climate, topography, organisms, and time. Parent material: This refers to the mineral material, or organic material from which the soil is formed. Soils will carry the characteristics of its parent material such as color, texture, structure, mineral composition and so on. For example, if soils are formed from an area with large rocks (parent rocks) of red sandstone, the soils will also be red in color and have the same feel as its parent material. Time: Soils can take many years to form. Younger soils have some characteristics from their parent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It also means more runoff, more percolation and more water erosion. They all help to determine the kind of soils in an area. Relief: This refers to the landscape position and the slopes it has. Steep, long slopes mean water will run down faster and potentially erode the surfaces of slopes. The effect will be poor soils on the slopes, and richer deposits at the foot of the slopes. Also, slopes may be exposed to more direct sunlight, which may dry out soil moisture and render it less fertile. Organisms: The source and richness of organic matter is down to the living things (plants and animals) that live on and in the soils. Plants in particular, provide lots of vegetative residue that are added to soils. Their roots also hold the soils and protect them from wind and water erosion. They shelter the soils from the sun and other environmental conditions, helping the soils to retain the needed moisture for chemical and biological reactions. Fungi, bacteria, insects, earthworms, and burrowing animals help with soil aeration. Worms help breakdown organic matter and aid decomposition. Animal droppings, dead insects and animals result in more decaying organic matter. Microorganisms also help with mineral and nutrient cycling and chemical reactions. The Water Cycle The water cycle, also called the hydrologic cycle, operates similarly to biogeochemical cycles in which plant and animal nutrients move through the atmosphere, the earth, and through living things.
