Dreams and Success in Arthur Miller s Death of a Salesman...
Dreams and Success in Arthur Miller s Death of a Salesman
In Arthur Miller s play, Death of a Salesman, Miller probes the dream of Willy Lowman while making
a statement about the dreams of American society. This essay will explore how each character of the
play contributes to Willy s dream, success, and failure.
Willy is the aging salesman whose imagination is much larger than his sales ability. Willy s wife,
Linda, stands by her husband even in his absence of realism. Biff and Happy follow in their father s
fallacy of life. Willy s brother, Ben is the only member of the Loman family with the clear vision
necessary to succeed. Charlie and his son Benard, on the other hand, enjoy better success in life
compared ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But in the beautiful, ironic complexity of her creation, she is also Willy s and their sons destroyer. In
her love Linda has accepted Willy s Greatness and his dream, but while in her admiration for Willy her
love is powerful and moving, in her admiration for his dreams, it is lethal. She encourages Willy s
dream, yet she will not let him leave her for the New Continent, the only realm where the dream can
be fulfilled. She want to reconcile father and son, but she attempts this in the context of Willy s false
values. She cannot allow her sons to achieve that selfhood that involves denial of these values
(Gordon p. 316). Linda is also caught up in Willy s lies and therefore does nothing but help fuel the
fire in the inferno of their dreams and ambitions. She lets this whole masquerade continue right in
front of her instead of doing something to stop their out of control lies.
Also, Biff the oldest son, continues to search for his purpose in life. Due mainly to all the hot air Willy
always feeds him, Biff continues to stumble in his fight for life. Biff has never had the ability to hold
down a job very long due to his inability to take orders and do his time in the trenches before
becoming a success at a particular job.
Richard J. Foster states, Biff, who in the play as an amplification or reflection of Willy s problems, has

Racial Differences Between Racial And Ethnic Backgrounds
It does not take much for someone to realize that in today s society, there are still inequalities in our
country. America may be a hundred and fifty years past the civil war when white and black racial lines
were erased, but they are more present today than in recent years. The recurrence of these racial lines
has been caused by the economic gap, violence on the streets, and miscommunication of facts.
The economic gap has been growing drastically between racial and ethnic backgrounds. According to
a study by the Pew Research Center this wealth gap has been growing since the Great Recession. In
their study, they found that white individuals had thirteen times greater net worth and when looking at
white to Hispanic, white individuals had ten times greater net worth. White individuals in the study
had a median net worth in 2013 $141,900. Black individuals had a median net worth of $11,000.
Hispanics have a median net worth of $13,700 (Fry and Kochhar). Racism is not just centered on the
amount of money each individual has but the effects of not having enough to provide the necessities
and what it can do to an individual in need. When children are starving and the mother is not able to
provide for them something clicks and all morality is out the window. The mother does not have a
choice but to break the law in any manner to get ahead because she is placed on such an uneven
playing field.
The economic gap stuns economic growth for our country because there are less and less

Pulau Ubin Essay
Pulau Ubin is an island at the east of Singapore and often regarded as the last kampung village in the
country. Strolling through the roads of Ubin literally takes you back in time, back to the Singapore in
the 1960 s where life was so much simpler. Your adventure begins the moment you queue up for the
ferry ride in Changi, and when you arrive, a great day of relaxation and refreshment awaits you.
Ubin is a great place for you to stroll or cycle through rustic roads under coconut palms swaying in the
cool breeze, traversing shady trails in overgrown rubber plantations, surveying undisturbed beaches
and thriving mangroves. On Ubin, food is delicious, air is cooling and sights and sounds so refreshing
to the soul.
However, all these could be changed in a few year s time.
The public dissatisfaction over worries that Pulau Ubin was to be developed gives us two main points

Suggestions to Pulau Ubin s future development became clearer in the 1991 Concept Plan. It was
mentioned that Pulau Tekong and Pulau Ubin will be preserved for relaxation and refreshment
purposes for as long as possible. However, if Singapore s population exceeds a certain number, the off
shore islands will be developed and connected to the mainland by Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) and a
major road.
Imagine in future, Ubin, a place with fresh air and beautiful greenery where people refresh themselves
at, developed into a theme park like Universal Studios Singapore and reachable by MRT or car,
completely destroying the biodiversity on the island and even driving the residents back into mainland
just for the purpose of industrialisation. In short, sacrificing the minority for the benefits of the

1.1 Explain The Difference Between Fire Intensity And...
1.1 Explain (using words) how each of these three is calculated and identify the primary variable(s)
used in the calculations. Describe how these variables cause this influence.
Fireline intensity (IB) the rate of heat released over a set distance by the actively flaming front of the
fire (kW/m). It is calculated by measuring the weight of the fuel burned and the rate of spread.
The equation is IB = w h R
w is the weight of the fuel consumed by the fire (kg m 2).
h is the low fuel heat content and is a constant. 18260 kJ kg 1 = h
R is the rate of spread (m 1 s 1).
The weight of the fuel and the rate of spread affect fire intensity by increasing or decreasing it, which
in turn affects the fireline intensity. The heavier the fuel is, the more there is and the faster the spread
therefore increasing both the fire intensity and fireline intensity. The lighter the fuel, the less there is
and the slower the spread therefore decreasing both types of intensities.
Heat per Unit Area (HA) is the total heat released from a given area (kJ m 2). Heat per Unit Area is a
measurement of rate of spread and flame length.
The equation is HA = (60 IB) / R
IB is the fireline intensity (kJ m 1 s 1).
R is the rate of spread (m 1 s 1).
Fireline intensity and rate of spread ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The fire intensity varies on the type and amount of understory growth and if there is build up of dead,
dry material. In a Postoak stand with a grass understory fire intensity will be low and will not produce
flame lengths long enough to scorch tree crowns. In a Postoak stand with a yaupon/juniper understory,
the fire intensity will will be high and will produce flame lengths adequate enough to scorch tree
crowns. In an open juniper stand within a grass matrix, the fire intensity will be low to medium
depending on how tall the grass is and if there is a build up of dead, dry fuel under the juniper stands.
There will be no crown scorching in juniper

Abraham Lincoln was a great president. He helped the county become one, and so much more.
Abraham Lincoln was possibly the best at what he did, until the assassination.( Abraham Lincoln
Assassination). Abraham Lincoln, a beloved and hated president of the United States, was
assassinated.
Before Abraham Lincoln was assassinated the things he did were great. He ended the civil war, was
planning to build more since the damage of the civil war. He did away with slavery which was a big
deal. Abraham Lincoln thought it would be smart to take a day off and go to a play at ford s theatre.
The play Lincoln was attending was Our American Cousin Starring Laura Keene.(Michael Burgan) He
thought since the amount of work he did he deserved a break and attended the play. Lincoln didn t
mind slavery he just didn t want it. Lincoln knew after Lee surrendered, there was still a lot to do.(

Booth was born in 1838. Booth heard about Lincoln attending the play and knew it was his chance.
Booths original plan was just to kidnap Lincoln and trade him for prisoners of the war. Booth got his
people helping with the assassination together and talked about their jobs. Each person had a job to go
through with.(Paul Angle). George Atzerodt was supposed to kill vice president Andrew Johnson, but
didn t follow through with it. Lewis Powell was supposed to kill secretary of state William Seward,

Muscular Endurance
Muscular endurance is very important for people playing sports and who have to sustain an activity
for long periods of time. Muscular endurance is determined by how well your slow twitch muscle
fibers are developed. In case your wondering what slow twitch muscle fibers are, I will explain. There
are generally two types of muscle fibers in your body, slow twitch and fast twitch. Slow twitch muscle
fibers cannot exert as much force as fast twitch, but can sustain an effort over a much greater period of
time. Fast twitch muscle fibers can exert a great amount of force but for a very limited amount of time.
Therefore, slow twitch equals endurance, while fast twitch equals strength. It is important to pay
attention to muscular endurance ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Again, a circuit training set up is suitable for this type of resistance training.
Muscular Endurance Long Term
Long term muscular endurance is suitable for continuous, steady state events such as the marathon,
triathlon and rowing that last beyond 2 minutes. Light loads are used so that exercises can be sustained
for a prolonged period. Rest periods are kept to a minimum and ideally the athlete should progress so
that the only rest between exercises is the time it takes to move between equipment.
PRINCIPLES OF MUSCULAR TRAINING
To have a good exercise program, the seven principles of exercise, described in Chapter 1, must be
applied to all muscular endurance and strength training. These principles are overload, progression,
specificity, regularity, recovery, balance, and variety.
OVERLOAD
The overload principle is the basis for all exercise training programs. For a muscle to increase in
strength, the workload to which it is subjected during exercise must be increased beyond what it
normally experiences. In other words, the muscle must be overloaded. Muscles adapt to increased
workloads by becoming larger and stronger and by developing greater endurance.
To understand the principle of overload, it is important to know the following strength training terms:
Full range of motion. To obtain optimal gains, the overload must be applied throughout the full

The Impact Of War As Portrayed In Ceremony By Leslie Marmon Silko Introduction Leslie Marmon
Silko s Ceremony, the most important novel of the Native American Renaissance, is among the most
widely taught and studied novels in higher education today. In it, Silko recounts a young man s search
for consolation in his tribe s history and traditions, and his resulting voyage of self discovery and
discovery of the world. The main character Tayo must come to terms with himself and his surrounding
environment upon his return from World War II. He is suffering from a sort of posttraumatic stress
disorder which has affected him physically as well as emotionally due to the fact that he has survived
as a prisoner of war in Japan. Consequently he must deal with all of the horrific memories when he
returns to live with his family on the Laguna Pueblo reservation in New Mexico. To compound his
problems, Tayo is half Caucasian and half Native American, so he must also deal with the added
pressures of bi culturalism. He is torn between the Native American world and the white world, and is
unable to feel a secure security or belonging. Tayo s friends and family believe that they know the
nature of and antidote for Tayo s illness and depression, however it is only the Native American
ceremonies, which will truly help him. He needs to witness the convergence of life and truly
understand the cyclical nature of his emotions and events that he has experienced. With the help and

Advantages Of Low Cost Strategy
My first and most important goal in undertaking this research assignment is to source, dissect and
analyse the low cost strategy model of Ryanair and how they succeed in using this strategy.
Ryanair, founded in 1985 by a man named Christopher Ryan has grown significantly throughout the
years. It has grown to be the largest airline in Europe in terms of numbers of passengers. This is of
course, down to their low cost strategy. Ryanair s strategy is in no doubt a low cost strategy and in my
opinion, if Ryanair could have the chance to fly passengers for free at a profit they certainly would!
However, this low cost strategy does come at a price. Ryanair are a cheap and efficient but most
certainly no frills airline. Their consumer market ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The development of Ryanair s low cost strategy comes down to Michael O Leary. O Leary was
persistent in implementing the low cost model of Southwest Airlines and set out a long term goal for
Ryanair to achieve. His philosophy was and remains to be, reduce cost in all operations, eliminate non
value added operations and provide the lowest possible air fare to the customer . His use of
standardization was vital in achieving the low cost strategy. Providing a basic uniform routine for the
workers minimised work time and kept the cost downto a minimum allowing them to offer lower
prices. The success of Michael O Leary s low cost strategy can clearly be seen in the statement,
Ryanair are the leading carrier in Europe with every increasing profits.
Ryanair s low cost strategy has indeed grown overtime to develop into the worlds most successful and
one of the most sought after models for organisational success. Wise use of Porters 5 Forces Analysis

The Bolsheviks and the Tragedy of the October Revolution...
The Bolsheviks and the Tragedy of the October Revolution
The majority of the people are with us. The majority of the working and oppressed people all over the
world are with us. Ours is the cause of justice. Our victory is assured. 1
October was a classic coup d état, the capture of governmental power by a small minority, carried out
without mass engagement. 2
The October Revolution was perhaps the most momentous event of the twentieth century. It led to the
creation of the Soviet Union, the first avowedly Communist nation in history, which was to become a
global superpower, an inspiration to many, an object of the hatred of many more. Possibly more
important was the role the memory of the October Revolution played in the ... Show more content on

The October Revolution was interpreted quite differently by those hostile to the Communist leaders of
the Soviet Union. In their top down histories of the Russian Revolution the common people appeared
as the passive objects of the evil machinations of the Bolsheviks. 4 The Bolsheviks cynically adopted
populist and anarchist slogans in order to recruit the masses as foot soldiers in their own quest for
power. If any apparent support for the October Revolution was seen among the masses, it was the
product of ignorance, skilled propaganda and a supple improvisation by the Bolsheviks themselves,
who transformed their elite operation into a temporary mass organization 5 to seduce the Russian
masses. The socialist reality of October was imaginary, and the Revolution itself was an amateur
police operation masked with expert propaganda to give an appearance of proletarian legitimacy 6
Both of these interpretations are heavily politicized. The former s purpose was to establish the
legitimacy of the Soviet Union as the genuine embodiment of the will of the Russian Proletariat, the
authentic People s State. The latter was meant to strip the USSR of that legitimacy and expose the
oppressive and unpopular dictatorship that ruled the country with an iron fist. As is not uncommon in
such situations, both of these interpretations

Braveheart Independence
The country of Scotland was conquered following the death of Alexander III. With no heir to the
throne, Scotland was easily captured and taken over by the King of England. The film Braveheart is an
adaption of these historical events. In the film, the national identity of the Scottish people evolved in
comparison from the beginning of the film to the end of it. There had always been a huge chasm
between the different classes. With peasants on one end and the nobles on the other. This class
separation resulted in the people of these groups to hold different views. During most of the film, the
peasants all listened to what William Wallace had to say and followed the idea he had planted in their
heads. The idea being, freedom. The nobles ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This resulted in people not identifying with people from other villages situated all across Scotland.
Each individual fought their own battles for their own benefits rather than the entire country as a
whole. Wallace and his clan started the fighting to avenge the death of Murron, Wallace s wife.
Wallace leads his can to kill the English garrison in his hometown to get a point across. This moment
of power sparks the idea of rebelling against the English. As the legend of Wallace grew, so did the
support. Clans from all over Scotland decided to join him in his fight that originally started as revenge,
but transformed into a fight for freedom. As more and more battles were won, the legend of Wallace
travelled all across the vast lands of Scotland. The death of the leader of the rebellion didn t stop the
movement towards freedom there. William Wallace became a martyr to the people of Scotland.
Towards the end of the film, there was a sense of patriotism towards the country, which wasn t present
at the start. This was due to the uniting of the people with a common goal. William Wallace started the
movement towards freedom, Robert Bruce encouraged the idea, and the people of Scotland completed

The Infiltration of Popular Culture in DeLillo s White Noise
The Infiltration of Popular Culture in DeLillo s White Noise
In Don DeLillo s satirical novel White Noise, we become acquainted with what we might call a
postmodern family a group of people loosely bound together by birth, marriage, and common
residence. But as we observe this family, we notice that the bonds between them are strained at best,
and that their lives have been taken over by some insidious new force. This force is popular culture.
For better or worse, pop culture has infiltrated the lives of our fictional family just as it has the lives of
real human beings. DeLillo s purpose in the book is best illuminated by Heinrich s comment after the
airborne toxic event: The real issue is the kind of radiation that surrounds ... Show more content on

This element of popular culture has thus drastically influenced Jack and Babette s lives.
In the novel, the television quite often interferes. It functions as a sort of background voice, always
present but never really noticed. It is a source of white noise , essentially random sound and light that
is intended only for such purposes. Yet at moments DeLillo allows the television to come to the front,
and we are treated to a sentence or two from an entity that, later in the novel, simply becomes the
voice . The voice speaks, but the characters do not comment on it. Thus this instrument for delivery of
popular culture has so thoroughly infiltrated their lives that they do not even acknowledge its
existence.
This is, of course, best illustrated by Steffie s Toyota Celica episode (154 155). By the narration
leading up to this, we are led to believe that some deep, important and supernatural revelation will
follow: Distinct syllables this time, not some dreamy murmur but a language not quite of this world
(154 155). Yet all DeLillo gives us is the near nonsense words Toyota Celica. The narrator then goes
on to describe this phenomenon as part of some universal consciousness. Perhaps, in some
circumstances, a universal human consciousness would be something worth having. But not if it is
only able to think of cars! Furthermore, cars are expensive, materialistic objects and materialism is
certainly one of the tenets of the religion of pop culture

Teen Mothers And The Rates Of Teen Pregnancy
According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), The United States ranks first among developed
nations in rates of both teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases (Stanger Hall, Kathrin F.,
and David W. Hall, paragraph 1). In 2015, there were a total of 229,715 babies born to teen moms
between the ages of 15 19 (Reproductive Health: Teen Pregnancy, paragraph 1). It is not just
becoming a problem; it has been a problem for a while. It does not help the problem when there are
reality television shows making it look glamorous to be a young mom. Shows like Teen Mom and 16
and Pregnant makes it seem like no matter what goes wrong, everything always ends happily ever
after. Unfortunately, for most people (teen moms included) life is not a fairy tale, not everyone gets a
happily ever after.
There are many reasons why we need to decrease teen pregnancy rates. The first of which is the
economic costs. According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) In 2010, teen
pregnancy and childbirth accounted for at least $9.4 billion in costs to U.S. taxpayers for increased
health care and foster care, increased incarceration rates among children of teen parents, and lost tax
revenue because of lower educational attainment and income among teen mothers (Reproductive
Health: Teen Pregnancy, paragraph 9).

Causes Of Computer Crime
In the United States, there are currently more than 85 million adults and around 10 million children
with access to the Internet from a North America investigation web site fact. With these numbers you
can understand why cyber stalking is so common these days more than ever. With the emergence of
technology, computer crime has been increasing at rapid rate. The first type of computer crime that has
the potential to cause high levels of distress and damage is cyberstalking. Cyberstalking can be
defined as using the Internet or other electronic means to harass, intimidate, threaten, monitor or make
unwanted advances towards another people. It can involve direct communications through e mails,
chat rooms sites, bulletin boards or social sites such as twitter, snapchat and Instagram. The
motivations for cyber stalking and harassment can range from many different things. One motivation
is to seek a romantic attachment with a person they probably wouldn t have a chance to talk to in the
real world. Another reason for cyber stalking can be a rejected person trying to seek revenge on that
person, something that is very commonly heard these days. Cyber stalking can even be used for
political motives, when it comes to harassing a group of people who might have different thoughts as
the harasser. One of the post popular forms of cyber stalking is identity fraud which can involve a

Panic Disorder And Anxiety Disorder
Introduction According to Torpy (2011), Panic Disorder refers to an overwhelming fear, terror, or
fright that is usually referred to as panic, one that happens to an individual several times in his or her
life. She goes on to describe panic as a situation that is short lived and frequently related to a terrifying
event that happens in an individual s life. The purpose of this paper, therefore, is to provide a detailed
discussion that shows a definitive picture of panic disorder. In order to enhance one s understanding
on what a panic disorder is, it will be necessary to examine some things like the symptoms and
prevalence rate of panic disorder, how different cultures views panic disorder, the age at which the
onset of panic disorder comes, some of the gender features in relation to panic disorder with emphasis
on whether it manifests differently in boys as it does in girls. It is also necessary to discuss the
etiology of panic disorder, the course and prognosis of the condition, as well as, a differential
diagnosis that appears similar to panic disorder. Finally, there will be a need to describe the social
effects of panic disorder in order to show how an individual with panic disorder gets affected socially.
Panic Disorder Statistics from the American Psychological Association (2015) indicate that one person
out of every 75 people might be suffering from panic disorder. Referring to it as a serious condition,
they go on to explain that panic disorder is a common

Persuasion
Persuasion Austen s Canonical Final Words
You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope. Tell me not that I am too late, that such precious
feelings are gone for ever. I offer myself to you again with a heart even more your own than when you
almost broke it, eight years and a half ago... I have loved none but you.
― Jane Austen, Persuasion
It s a love story. A fairy tale ending, a quintessential marriage, and a happily ever after substantiates
this fact. So how is Jane Austen s last written novel, Persuasion, any different to the typical, cliché
romance? The secret lies in the pain of the journey. At the age of twenty seven, Anne Elliot; a
mediocre maiden mistreated by those closest to her, lost the bloom of youth and more importantly, the
love of her life. Eight years had passed since she was persuaded by her narcissistic family to terminate
her engagement to Frederick Wentworth, a gallant naval captain born of low social status and
insufficient wealth. When they meet again, both have changed significantly. But amidst flirtatious
distractions and unexpected misadventures, the pair cannot deny the conjoined heartache and love
they felt exclusively for each other, despite the misfortunes of life.
Persuasion, written by Austen in her final days and published in 1817, is a novel possessing a
timelessness and raw nature which reflects early 19th century Britain in a way that resonates with
current modernistic society, thus justifying its inclusion in the Literary Canon.

How Can Social Justice Become A Fad
Movements such as Black Lives Matter and the gay rights movement have gained rapid popularity in
modern society. This spike of interest in social justice in pop culture has created a fad in which
celebrities, public figures, and regular citizens feel an underlying pressure to support social justice
movements which alter rights for large demographics of people. And while the cultural trend of social
justice becoming a fad creates the illusion of a more progressive society, the truth of the matter is that
the popularity of such movements can be detrimental to the cause because it gives the false
appearance of universal acceptance when the stigma against oppressed groups is still prevalent in
society. Indubitably, fads will fade, which is especially threatening in the case of social justice, which
has a much greater consequence once the popularity surrounding it disappears. Removing the illusion
of progress and calling out the hypocrisy behind those who feign support for their own personal gain
and popularity can counter the insidious nature of the social justice fad.
Popularity can be powerful in the sense that movements can gain a lot of traction by drawing attention
to problems; however, this power is often wasted by the inability to utilize public outrage into an
effective method of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the case of Hillary and other politicians, whether their motive is genuine or not, they will pass laws
for the favor of the public eye. This will irrefutably cause change for the time being. However, if these
politicians and public figures are not genuine about their beliefs, how long will these changes last?
What will happen after the fad passes and social justice movements are no longer trending? All of the
changes created off of fictitious positions will revert back to the way they once were, and all progress

The European Conflicts With Napoleon Bonaparte Of France
During the European conflicts with Napoleon Bonaparte of France, England would become a
significant factor in the conflicts at sea due to the extensive Royal Navy. While France s population
was significant, France lacked the financial stability and the maritime vessels to effectively gain
control in order to defeat Great Britain. The conflict between England and France was a major catalyst
for the eventual War of 1812. In their seafaring battles, both England and France attempted to restrict
supplies from reaching the other s enemy. In this effort, both countries blocked the United States from
trading with the other. This is specifically noted as England passed the Orders in Council. An
additional sea related conflict involved England and France commandeering American vessels.
England, in an act known as impressment, would also remove sailors from captured American vessels
and force them to serve with the Royal Navy or face imprisonment. While Jefferson s failed Embargo
Act followed by the Non Intercourse Act had already significantly impacted sea trade, it was the
general belief of the new nation that England was to blame for the hardships encountered due to trade
restrictions.
Another formidable component of the War of 1812 was a group of Americans eager to declare war on
England who would become known as the War Hawks. This politically charged group was motivated
for war in order to increase land expansion for the United States through the acquisition of Canada.

Leadership in Crisis
Ernest Shackleton and the Epic Voyage of the Endurance
3/10/2014 aFriendInNeed Situation Overview:
Shackleton sailed with 27 men from South Georgia Island on a British Polar expedition into South
Atlantic aboard the ship called Endurance. The south pole had been recently reached in 1911. The goal
of the Imperial Trans Antarctic Expedition was to become the first explorers to land on the Antarctic
continent as well as cross it. The original plan was to sail Endurance through the Weddell Sea and then
use dogs and sledges to support the crew of six men to march on the opposite side of Antarctica.
However, their ship became trapped in the pack ice of the Weddell Sea, before they could reach the
Antarctic coast. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nevertheless, his spirited optimism, unrelenting courage and sheer determination displayed during the
crisis have become legendary.
By what criteria should the Endurance expedition be evaluated? As a scientific endeavor? An
entrepreneurial venture? An exercise in imperial opportunity? Given your answer, was it a success or
failure?
The Endurance expedition can be evaluated as an entrepreneurial venture. Shackleton was trying to
establish a name for himself as an explorer. His main goal was to be the first to reach the South Pole
and traverse the continent. Britain held records for the farthest exploration to the north and south polar
areas, but faced international competition as time went by. An international race was going on to reach
and cross the South Pole and England wanted to be the first to claim Antarctica.
Shackleton acted as an entrepreneur as he spent a lot of time raising the necessary funding for his
expedition. This journey had high associated risks, and he needed to secure tremendous funding for,
two vessels, as well as for two crews. Not only, he used his family connections to reach out for Britain
s wealthiest people, but also sent them a personal letter along with a copy of the expedition
prospectus. He managed to secure the needed £51,000 for the expedition. Eventually, he took a huge
financial risk to achieve his dream.
He continuously adapted himself and

The Prince And Niccolo Machiavelli
The makeup of a functioning society is one that lies in the grey area of human existence. Not every
aspect of human nature is ready to be sorted into one or the other. Which is why when examining
society, it is important to have both a realistic as well as an idealistic view. Philosophers Niccolò
Machiavelli and Socrates lived in a time of uncertainty, political fragmentation, and violence and their
attitude on how to deal with such issues were contrasting. Machiavelli chooses to focus on creating a
political power that is long lasting while Socrates chooses to investigate more into the unknown and
promote transparency by challenging the authority that is already in power. As indicated by the works
The Apology and Crito, Socrates has an idealistic approach towards ethics and politics. On the
opposite hand, in the work The Prince, philosopher Niccolò Machiavelli advocates a realistic point of
view in creating a political power that is strong and long lasting. Socrates would not be supportive of
Machiavelli s The Prince as it advocates for everything that Socrates identifies as unstable
characteristics for a government. In short, the political system of which Machiavelli is advocating for
is the sole one that Socrates is trying to dismantle.

in human nature and attempts to manipulate them in creating stability. Machiavelli proposes a concept

Using The Method Of Heat Shock
Introduction:
Genetic Transformation is the process by which a segment of DNA of a specific organism is implanted
into another organism that reads the foreign organisms DNA and presents the phenotype for the
selected DNA segment. The genetic transformation can occur using three different methods, but in the
case of the experiment conducted and described below, was performed using the method of heat
shock. In the experiment, heat shock was used to genetically transform a piece of DNA from a
jellyfish into a sample of E. coli bacteria to observe if the transformation would occur. The
components necessary for the transformation were: pGLO, a plasmid acting as a vector for the
transformation and contained the DNA segment extracted from jellyfish that encodes for the
production of a protein that glows (GFP); Luria Bertani broth, the culture for the transformation;
Ampicillin Resistant gene, to sort cells so only the cells having absorbed plasmid will survive;
Arabinose, a sugar to aid in the growth of bacteria. The genetic transformation was tested using four
samples, each having a different environment. The first sample s environment consisted of +pGLO,
the Luria Bertani broth, and a gene resistant to Ampicillin. The second sample s environment
consisted of +pGLO, the Luria Bertani broth, a gene resistant to Ampicillin, and arabinose. The third
sample s environment consisted of pGLO, the Luria Bertani broth, and a gene resistant to Ampicillin.

Mega Vid s Strategic Plan
Introduction
Mega Vid strives to satisfy the demands of our customers in an effort to increase the customer loyalty
while improving our customer satisfaction ratings. This effort has recently been impacted as our
company struggles to create a brand which will dominate in a competitive market. In addition to
numerous complaints regarding the effects of the products our company offers, we often endure

However, these initiatives can reduce the sales of the video games since some of those scenes are the
major parts of the games that players engage. There is a fundamental concept that tends to miss out
when parents are purchasing video games for their children. The majority of them do not differentiate
games meant for adult consumption and the games created for children and teenage content. There
needs to be a strong campaign to make the parents aware of proper choice of video games that suits
the age of the players. The organization can also work on coming up with games that allow parental
control by allowing parents to block some of the scenes that they consider inappropriate for the
children.
Some other companies dealing with production and selling of video games have opted to forward
customer calls to other video game specialists and developers to answer their questions in an attempt
to avoid the problem of giving conflicting statements to the customers. However, this approach is not
suitable for our business because it is our culture to ensure that customer satisfaction is always the top
most factors. Our organization aims to create a good customer relationship by providing the customer
customized solutions that fit their individual needs. By Outsourcing the idea of dealing with customer
complaints to other firms, our organization will lack control of the quality of

The US Invasion of Grenada Essay
The U.S invasion of Grenada, also known as Operation Urgent Fury was an invasion of the Caribbean
island nation by forces led by the United States. It resulted into victory for the United States in just a

prompted by a military coup, which ousted the revolutionary government, it restored the constitutional
government. The invasion was also as a response to the request for help by the Organization of
American States (OAS). The official reason given by the U.S government for the invasion was the

A four day full curfew was declared, anybody found on the street during this period would be shot on
sight. It has been revealed that the Governor General appealed for the invasion via diplomatic
channels (Martin, Doughlas). American officials cited the building of the over 9,000 feet long Point
Salines International Airport as a project meant to facilitate the conduit of soviet arms into the region.
The U.S government felt that the Soviet Cuban militarization of Grenada was a significant security
threat, as proven by the abnormally long runway under construction at the airport. Intelligence sources
also indicated soviet interest in the island. The American students were the most mentioned as the
factor that tipped the scales.
The invasion commenced at 0500 hours on the morning of 25th October 1983. This was after the
forces took off from the Grantley Adams International Airport in the neighboring Barbados islands
after a refueling stopover. The Commander of the American forces during the invasion was Joseph
Metcalph III. The U.S forces comprised of elements from the branches of military service, along with
several special operations teams. The total number of American troops was approximately 7,000; this
was bolstered by 300 troops obtained from the Organization of American States. They were resisted
by approximately 1,500 Grenadian troops, together with approximately 700 Cuban personnel.
It is said that the defenders were ready for the invasion;

I sat outside of the psychiatrist s office Dr. Janice Marten, M.D. in a black, squeaking leather chair,
ruminating on how things got so bad as to need to take my child, Zachary, to a psychiatrist. Truthfully,
I blamed myself. If only I had realized how much of a scumbag Joshua was, if only I had never been
taken by his good looks and charm, if only I had never married him, if only I had realized what was
going on for years behind my back. If only, if only. There, of course, had been clues to his cheating.
He would come home late and was distant towards our son and me, he d have work on our usual
family weekends and date nights, and he decided that we should have separate bank accounts again. It
made me feel like such an idiot, and ashamed at my stupidity when Zachary had found the video of
Joshua almost ankle deep in some intern. Maybe if I hadn t been so absorbed in my separation from
Joshua, I would ve noticed what was happening with Zachary. According to his teachers, he d
withdrawn from his friends and classes, his normally healthy appetite fell to nil, he d begun wetting
the bed, and most damning of all, he d begun to have disturbingly descriptive nightmares about a
monster who would chase him and bite him all over, or sometimes even my words, not his kill him.

lollipop sticking out of his mouth. I smiled at him, sure that the smile didn t reach my eyes, but

Likewise, in initiation ceremonies, boys are circumcised as well as subincised, and the first
ceremonies of initiation, with the use of #8216;bullroarers #8217;, are intended to make them
independent (and separated) from their mothers and other females. Subincision, from the view of the
Arunda tribe, was designed to cause the male organ to resemble the vulva, and that the effusion of
blood was regarded as serving the same function as menstruation, which in the female enabled her
naturally to dispose of the evil that accumulate in the body. To continue the same effect, males
periodically engage in incision of the penis and called it menstruation. Marriage arrangements were
made when the children were very young and even before they were born. Girls were usually married
(through a handing over ceremony) when she was about 11 or 12 years old when she reached puberty.
Most marriages took place at a particular place. For example, in the Shoalhaven region, Coolangatta
Mountain was a traditional marriage place or site. It would have been significant because particular
ancestors married there (according to a Dreamtime story or stones), and because of tradition of
thousands of couples marrying over time. For marriage purposes, every tribe was divided into four
main groups, sometimes called marriage moieties. When each child was born, he or she was given a

Sequence Matching And Pattern Matching
INTRODUCTION : Pattern matching is a programming language method which is considered as
important in functional programming. It is uses STRING MATCHING and PATTERN
RECOGNITION. The main job of pattern matching is to check and decompose data. The object
oriented programming languages do not have any particular method for this decomposition of data. So
the Object oriented programmers are in need for a solutions for this problem of decomposition .For
that problem as a solution a built in pattern matching construct is introduced which is compatible with
object oriented programming is proposed. And the data is to be defined separately for the operation on
data to make matching useful. Pattern matching is presented in two ways, ... Show more content on

If the given input pattern matches , the pattern variables are bound to corresponding parts in the input

techniques. The object oriented way of analyzing and performing operations on data: Object oriented
design is a method and style for software system development that amounts to encapsulating data and
operations in abstractions. This method produces some abstractions that are usually implemented in an
object oriented programming language, which supports the object oriented style through its syntax and
semantics. It does so by providing an object model and by offering built in methods for object
construction, method calls, field access and deletion of objects. Classifying abstractions and taking
them apart into their subcomponents is not a built in construct of object oriented programming
languages.
Pattern matching will offer: Not only Readability and security, a high level method for pattern
matching provides optimization and static checks. The disadvantage of object oriented solutions which
are mentioned above is that the standard compilers can not check hand written case distinctions are
based on type tests and type casts cover all the cases, or all branches can actually be entered. Pattern

he learned in his home country nobody really knew, but Slinger s hobby of welding all kinds of metal,

amazed everyone, as he creatively made a large pot look like a mountain with stone faces and trees.
All of his work was unique and, with a little help from everyone, it was displayed in a gallery. This
highlighted a great moment for Slinger, and although he never made any real money from his passion,
he was able to share it with many. The main cafeteria, which Japes looked after, consisted of a large

Analysis Of A Pair Of Tickets By Amy Tan
A Pair of Tickets by Amy Tan uses unpretentious yet intense symbolism and imagery to make a
wonderful story with layers of importance and significant profundity that one can t completely
acknowledge unless you read it more than once.
The story is around an American conceived Chinese lady, Jing mei, who goes to China to meet her
twin stepsisters that her mom was compelled to relinquish numerous prior years. Since her mom had
passed away just a couple of months prior, the meeting is full of vulnerability and bitterness. Jing mei
battles with self character issues and what it truly intends to be Chinese. En route, she takes in reality
about the reasons her mom deserted her sisters and the significance behind their names. At last, she at
last associates with her sisters and makes the passionate association with her Chinese legacy.
With regards to symbolism and imagery, Amy Tan seasons her story with words like dark, dull, and
desolate which passes on to the peruser a feeling of how Jing mei felt about her life after her mom s
demise. Dim and boring suggest an absence of warmth and a fundamental pity that appear to pervade
the story. Jing mei has clashing sentiments about her late mother, her Chinese self, and her relatives,
hence adding to the general grayness of the story.
Adding to that fundamental bitterness is Jing mei s own feeling of uncertainty which can be set up
when she sees the general population on the bamboo platform. The laborers standing unharnessed on

  • 2. Dreams and Success in Arthur Miller s Death of a Salesman... Dreams and Success in Arthur Miller s Death of a Salesman In Arthur Miller s play, Death of a Salesman, Miller probes the dream of Willy Lowman while making a statement about the dreams of American society. This essay will explore how each character of the play contributes to Willy s dream, success, and failure. Willy is the aging salesman whose imagination is much larger than his sales ability. Willy s wife, Linda, stands by her husband even in his absence of realism. Biff and Happy follow in their father s fallacy of life. Willy s brother, Ben is the only member of the Loman family with the clear vision necessary to succeed. Charlie and his son Benard, on the other hand, enjoy better success in life compared ... In her love Linda has accepted Willy s Greatness and his dream, but while in her admiration for Willy her love is powerful and moving, in her admiration for his dreams, it is lethal. She encourages Willy s dream, yet she will not let him leave her for the New Continent, the only realm where the dream can be fulfilled. She want to reconcile father and son, but she attempts this in the context of Willy s false values. She cannot allow her sons to achieve that selfhood that involves denial of these values (Gordon p. 316). Linda is also caught up in Willy s lies and therefore does nothing but help fuel the fire in the inferno of their dreams and ambitions. She lets this whole masquerade continue right in front of her instead of doing something to stop their out of control lies. Also, Biff the oldest son, continues to search for his purpose in life. Due mainly to all the hot air Willy always feeds him, Biff continues to stumble in his fight for life. Biff has never had the ability to hold down a job very long due to his inability to take orders and do his time in the trenches before becoming a success at a particular job. Richard J. Foster states, Biff, who in the play as an amplification or reflection of Willy s problems, has ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Racial Differences Between Racial And Ethnic Backgrounds It does not take much for someone to realize that in today s society, there are still inequalities in our country. America may be a hundred and fifty years past the civil war when white and black racial lines were erased, but they are more present today than in recent years. The recurrence of these racial lines has been caused by the economic gap, violence on the streets, and miscommunication of facts. The economic gap has been growing drastically between racial and ethnic backgrounds. According to a study by the Pew Research Center this wealth gap has been growing since the Great Recession. In their study, they found that white individuals had thirteen times greater net worth and when looking at white to Hispanic, white individuals had ten times greater net worth. White individuals in the study had a median net worth in 2013 $141,900. Black individuals had a median net worth of $11,000. Hispanics have a median net worth of $13,700 (Fry and Kochhar). Racism is not just centered on the amount of money each individual has but the effects of not having enough to provide the necessities and what it can do to an individual in need. When children are starving and the mother is not able to provide for them something clicks and all morality is out the window. The mother does not have a choice but to break the law in any manner to get ahead because she is placed on such an uneven playing field. The economic gap stuns economic growth for our country because there are less and less ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Strolling through the roads of Ubin literally takes you back in time, back to the Singapore in the 1960 s where life was so much simpler. Your adventure begins the moment you queue up for the ferry ride in Changi, and when you arrive, a great day of relaxation and refreshment awaits you. Ubin is a great place for you to stroll or cycle through rustic roads under coconut palms swaying in the cool breeze, traversing shady trails in overgrown rubber plantations, surveying undisturbed beaches and thriving mangroves. Imagine in future, Ubin, a place with fresh air and beautiful greenery where people refresh themselves at, developed into a theme park like Universal Studios Singapore and reachable by MRT or car, completely destroying the biodiversity on the island and even driving the residents back into mainland just for the purpose of industrialisation. • 6. 1.1 Explain The Difference Between Fire Intensity And... 1.1 Explain (using words) how each of these three is calculated and identify the primary variable(s) used in the calculations. Describe how these variables cause this influence. Fireline intensity (IB) the rate of heat released over a set distance by the actively flaming front of the fire (kW/m). It is calculated by measuring the weight of the fuel burned and the rate of spread. The equation is IB = w h R w is the weight of the fuel consumed by the fire (kg m 2). h is the low fuel heat content and is a constant. 18260 kJ kg 1 = h R is the rate of spread (m 1 s 1). The weight of the fuel and the rate of spread affect fire intensity by increasing or decreasing it, which in turn affects the fireline intensity. The heavier the fuel is, the more there is and the faster the spread therefore increasing both the fire intensity and fireline intensity. The lighter the fuel, the less there is and the slower the spread therefore decreasing both types of intensities. Heat per Unit Area (HA) is the total heat released from a given area (kJ m 2). Heat per Unit Area is a measurement of rate of spread and flame length. The equation is HA = (60 IB) / R IB is the fireline intensity (kJ m 1 s 1). R is the rate of spread (m 1 s 1). Muscular endurance is determined by how well your slow twitch muscle fibers are developed. In case your wondering what slow twitch muscle fibers are, I will explain. There are generally two types of muscle fibers in your body, slow twitch and fast twitch. Slow twitch muscle fibers cannot exert as much force as fast twitch, but can sustain an effort over a much greater period of time. Fast twitch muscle fibers can exert a great amount of force but for a very limited amount of time. Therefore, slow twitch equals endurance, while fast twitch equals strength. It is important to pay attention to muscular endurance ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Again, a circuit training set up is suitable for this type of resistance training. Muscular Endurance Long Term Long term muscular endurance is suitable for continuous, steady state events such as the marathon, triathlon and rowing that last beyond 2 minutes. Light loads are used so that exercises can be sustained for a prolonged period. Rest periods are kept to a minimum and ideally the athlete should progress so that the only rest between exercises is the time it takes to move between equipment. PRINCIPLES OF MUSCULAR TRAINING To have a good exercise program, the seven principles of exercise, described in Chapter 1, must be applied to all muscular endurance and strength training. These principles are overload, progression, specificity, regularity, recovery, balance, and variety. OVERLOAD The overload principle is the basis for all exercise training programs. For a muscle to increase in strength, the workload to which it is subjected during exercise must be increased beyond what it normally experiences. In other words, the muscle must be overloaded. Muscles adapt to increased workloads by becoming larger and stronger and by developing greater endurance. To understand the principle of overload, it is important to know the following strength training terms: Full range of motion. In it, Silko recounts a young man s search for consolation in his tribe s history and traditions, and his resulting voyage of self discovery and discovery of the world. The main character Tayo must come to terms with himself and his surrounding environment upon his return from World War II. He is suffering from a sort of posttraumatic stress disorder which has affected him physically as well as emotionally due to the fact that he has survived as a prisoner of war in Japan. Consequently he must deal with all of the horrific memories when he returns to live with his family on the Laguna Pueblo reservation in New Mexico. To compound his problems, Tayo is half Caucasian and half Native American, so he must also deal with the added pressures of bi culturalism. He is torn between the Native American world and the white world, and is unable to feel a secure security or belonging. Tayo s friends and family believe that they know the nature of and antidote for Tayo s illness and depression, however it is only the Native American ceremonies, which will truly help him. • 10. Advantages Of Low Cost Strategy My first and most important goal in undertaking this research assignment is to source, dissect and analyse the low cost strategy model of Ryanair and how they succeed in using this strategy. Ryanair, founded in 1985 by a man named Christopher Ryan has grown significantly throughout the years. It has grown to be the largest airline in Europe in terms of numbers of passengers. This is of course, down to their low cost strategy. Ryanair s strategy is in no doubt a low cost strategy and in my opinion, if Ryanair could have the chance to fly passengers for free at a profit they certainly would! However, this low cost strategy does come at a price. Ryanair are a cheap and efficient but most certainly no frills airline. Their consumer market ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The majority of the working and oppressed people all over the world are with us. Ours is the cause of justice. Our victory is assured. 1 October was a classic coup d état, the capture of governmental power by a small minority, carried out without mass engagement. 2 The October Revolution was perhaps the most momentous event of the twentieth century. It led to the creation of the Soviet Union, the first avowedly Communist nation in history, which was to become a global superpower, an inspiration to many, an object of the hatred of many more. Possibly more important was the role the memory of the October Revolution played in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The October Revolution was interpreted quite differently by those hostile to the Communist leaders of the Soviet Union. In their top down histories of the Russian Revolution the common people appeared as the passive objects of the evil machinations of the Bolsheviks. 4 The Bolsheviks cynically adopted populist and anarchist slogans in order to recruit the masses as foot soldiers in their own quest for power. If any apparent support for the October Revolution was seen among the masses, it was the product of ignorance, skilled propaganda and a supple improvisation by the Bolsheviks themselves, who transformed their elite operation into a temporary mass organization 5 to seduce the Russian masses. The socialist reality of October was imaginary, and the Revolution itself was an amateur police operation masked with expert propaganda to give an appearance of proletarian legitimacy 6 Both of these interpretations are heavily politicized. The former s purpose was to establish the legitimacy of the Soviet Union as the genuine embodiment of the will of the Russian Proletariat, the authentic People s State. The latter was meant to strip the USSR of that legitimacy and expose the oppressive and unpopular dictatorship that ruled the country with an iron fist. With no heir to the throne, Scotland was easily captured and taken over by the King of England. The film Braveheart is an adaption of these historical events. In the film, the national identity of the Scottish people evolved in comparison from the beginning of the film to the end of it. There had always been a huge chasm between the different classes. With peasants on one end and the nobles on the other. This class separation resulted in the people of these groups to hold different views. During most of the film, the peasants all listened to what William Wallace had to say and followed the idea he had planted in their heads. The idea being, freedom. The nobles ... As the legend of Wallace grew, so did the support. Clans from all over Scotland decided to join him in his fight that originally started as revenge, but transformed into a fight for freedom. As more and more battles were won, the legend of Wallace travelled all across the vast lands of Scotland. The death of the leader of the rebellion didn t stop the movement towards freedom there. William Wallace became a martyr to the people of Scotland. Towards the end of the film, there was a sense of patriotism towards the country, which wasn t present at the start. • 14. The Infiltration of Popular Culture in DeLillo s White Noise The Infiltration of Popular Culture in DeLillo s White Noise In Don DeLillo s satirical novel White Noise, we become acquainted with what we might call a postmodern family a group of people loosely bound together by birth, marriage, and common residence. But as we observe this family, we notice that the bonds between them are strained at best, and that their lives have been taken over by some insidious new force. This force is popular culture. For better or worse, pop culture has infiltrated the lives of our fictional family just as it has the lives of real human beings. DeLillo s purpose in the book is best illuminated by Heinrich s comment after the airborne toxic event: The real issue is the kind of radiation that surrounds ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This element of popular culture has thus drastically influenced Jack and Babette s lives. In the novel, the television quite often interferes. It functions as a sort of background voice, always present but never really noticed. It is a source of white noise , essentially random sound and light that is intended only for such purposes. Yet at moments DeLillo allows the television to come to the front, and we are treated to a sentence or two from an entity that, later in the novel, simply becomes the voice . The voice speaks, but the characters do not comment on it. Thus this instrument for delivery of popular culture has so thoroughly infiltrated their lives that they do not even acknowledge its existence. This is, of course, best illustrated by Steffie s Toyota Celica episode (154 155). By the narration leading up to this, we are led to believe that some deep, important and supernatural revelation will follow: Distinct syllables this time, not some dreamy murmur but a language not quite of this world (154 155). Yet all DeLillo gives us is the near nonsense words Toyota Celica. The narrator then goes on to describe this phenomenon as part of some universal consciousness. Perhaps, in some circumstances, a universal human consciousness would be something worth having. But not if it is only able to think of cars! Furthermore, cars are expensive, materialistic objects and materialism is certainly one of the tenets of the religion of pop culture ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Teen Mothers And The Rates Of Teen Pregnancy According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), The United States ranks first among developed nations in rates of both teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases (Stanger Hall, Kathrin F., and David W. Hall, paragraph 1). In 2015, there were a total of 229,715 babies born to teen moms between the ages of 15 19 (Reproductive Health: Teen Pregnancy, paragraph 1). It is not just becoming a problem; it has been a problem for a while. It does not help the problem when there are reality television shows making it look glamorous to be a young mom. Shows like Teen Mom and 16 and Pregnant makes it seem like no matter what goes wrong, everything always ends happily ever after. Unfortunately, for most people (teen moms included) life is not a fairy tale, not everyone gets a happily ever after. There are many reasons why we need to decrease teen pregnancy rates. The first of which is the economic costs. According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) In 2010, teen pregnancy and childbirth accounted for at least $9.4 billion in costs to U.S. taxpayers for increased health care and foster care, increased incarceration rates among children of teen parents, and lost tax revenue because of lower educational attainment and income among teen mothers (Reproductive Health: Teen Pregnancy, paragraph 9). I offer myself to you again with a heart even more your own than when you almost broke it, eight years and a half ago... I have loved none but you. ― Jane Austen, Persuasion It s a love story. A fairy tale ending, a quintessential marriage, and a happily ever after substantiates this fact. So how is Jane Austen s last written novel, Persuasion, any different to the typical, cliché romance? The secret lies in the pain of the journey. At the age of twenty seven, Anne Elliot; a mediocre maiden mistreated by those closest to her, lost the bloom of youth and more importantly, the love of her life. Eight years had passed since she was persuaded by her narcissistic family to terminate her engagement to Frederick Wentworth, a gallant naval captain born of low social status and insufficient wealth. When they meet again, both have changed significantly. But amidst flirtatious distractions and unexpected misadventures, the pair cannot deny the conjoined heartache and love they felt exclusively for each other, despite the misfortunes of life. Persuasion, written by Austen in her final days and published in 1817, is a novel possessing a timelessness and raw nature which reflects early 19th century Britain in a way that resonates with current modernistic society, thus justifying its inclusion in the Literary Canon. ... This spike of interest in social justice in pop culture has created a fad in which celebrities, public figures, and regular citizens feel an underlying pressure to support social justice movements which alter rights for large demographics of people. And while the cultural trend of social justice becoming a fad creates the illusion of a more progressive society, the truth of the matter is that the popularity of such movements can be detrimental to the cause because it gives the false appearance of universal acceptance when the stigma against oppressed groups is still prevalent in society. Indubitably, fads will fade, which is especially threatening in the case of social justice, which has a much greater consequence once the popularity surrounding it disappears. Removing the illusion of progress and calling out the hypocrisy behind those who feign support for their own personal gain and popularity can counter the insidious nature of the social justice fad. • 23. The European Conflicts With Napoleon Bonaparte Of France During the European conflicts with Napoleon Bonaparte of France, England would become a significant factor in the conflicts at sea due to the extensive Royal Navy. While France s population was significant, France lacked the financial stability and the maritime vessels to effectively gain control in order to defeat Great Britain. The conflict between England and France was a major catalyst for the eventual War of 1812. In their seafaring battles, both England and France attempted to restrict supplies from reaching the other s enemy. In this effort, both countries blocked the United States from trading with the other. This is specifically noted as England passed the Orders in Council. An additional sea related conflict involved England and France commandeering American vessels. England, in an act known as impressment, would also remove sailors from captured American vessels and force them to serve with the Royal Navy or face imprisonment. While Jefferson s failed Embargo Act followed by the Non Intercourse Act had already significantly impacted sea trade, it was the general belief of the new nation that England was to blame for the hardships encountered due to trade restrictions. Another formidable component of the War of 1812 was a group of Americans eager to declare war on England who would become known as the War Hawks. This politically charged group was motivated for war in order to increase land expansion for the United States through the acquisition of Canada. There ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. The Prince And Niccolo Machiavelli The makeup of a functioning society is one that lies in the grey area of human existence. Not every aspect of human nature is ready to be sorted into one or the other. Which is why when examining society, it is important to have both a realistic as well as an idealistic view. Philosophers Niccolò Machiavelli and Socrates lived in a time of uncertainty, political fragmentation, and violence and their attitude on how to deal with such issues were contrasting. Machiavelli chooses to focus on creating a political power that is long lasting while Socrates chooses to investigate more into the unknown and promote transparency by challenging the authority that is already in power. As indicated by the works The Apology and Crito, Socrates has an idealistic approach towards ethics and politics. On the opposite hand, in the work The Prince, philosopher Niccolò Machiavelli advocates a realistic point of view in creating a political power that is strong and long lasting. Socrates would not be supportive of Machiavelli s The Prince as it advocates for everything that Socrates identifies as unstable characteristics for a government. In short, the political system of which Machiavelli is advocating for is the sole one that Socrates is trying to dismantle. • 26. Using The Method Of Heat Shock Introduction: Genetic Transformation is the process by which a segment of DNA of a specific organism is implanted into another organism that reads the foreign organisms DNA and presents the phenotype for the selected DNA segment. The genetic transformation can occur using three different methods, but in the case of the experiment conducted and described below, was performed using the method of heat shock. In the experiment, heat shock was used to genetically transform a piece of DNA from a jellyfish into a sample of E. coli bacteria to observe if the transformation would occur. The components necessary for the transformation were: pGLO, a plasmid acting as a vector for the transformation and contained the DNA segment extracted from jellyfish that encodes for the production of a protein that glows (GFP); Luria Bertani broth, the culture for the transformation; Ampicillin Resistant gene, to sort cells so only the cells having absorbed plasmid will survive; Arabinose, a sugar to aid in the growth of bacteria. The genetic transformation was tested using four samples, each having a different environment. The first sample s environment consisted of +pGLO, the Luria Bertani broth, and a gene resistant to Ampicillin. Analysis Of A Pair Of Tickets By Amy Tan A Pair of Tickets by Amy Tan uses unpretentious yet intense symbolism and imagery to make a wonderful story with layers of importance and significant profundity that one can t completely acknowledge unless you read it more than once. The story is around an American conceived Chinese lady, Jing mei, who goes to China to meet her twin stepsisters that her mom was compelled to relinquish numerous prior years. Since her mom had passed away just a couple of months prior, the meeting is full of vulnerability and bitterness. Jing mei battles with self character issues and what it truly intends to be Chinese. En route, she takes in reality about the reasons her mom deserted her sisters and the significance behind their names. At last, she at last associates with her sisters and makes the passionate association with her Chinese legacy. With regards to symbolism and imagery, Amy Tan seasons her story with words like dark, dull, and desolate which passes on to the peruser a feeling of how Jing mei felt about her life after her mom s demise. Jing mei has clashing sentiments about her late mother, her Chinese self, and her relatives, hence adding to the general grayness of the story. Adding to that fundamental bitterness is Jing mei s own feeling of uncertainty which can be set up when she sees the general population on the bamboo platform.
