Seeing Ragtime and Blues as Parents of Jazz Jazz is a music genre that has complex characteristics
and history of development and thus many musicians and scholars face troubles in defining what jazz
is. In general, jazz is believed to have born in New Orleans. Jazz developed for the pleasure of the
social dancers. According to the Understanding Jazz: What Is Jazz? of John F. Kennedy center for the
Performing Arts, Jazz was created mainly by Afro Americans, and had elements of European and Afro
American culture. Also, it emphasizes few elements of Jazz, which are swing feel, syncopation, and
improvisation. These different culture and elements of jazz may be explained by how jazz ... Show

Thus the similarity between ragtime and blues is significant but there are numerous differences
between the two music styles. First, their origin was different. Even though they both had African
influence as mentioned, ragtime was more strongly influenced by European music style, and blues
was heavily African music style. According to Durk Sutro in his book Jazz for Dummies, Ragtime was
European influenced, in the sense that it was composed, not improvised, and featured carefully crafted
melodies and harmonies...ragtime could sound concisely European (ch.5). Although European
influenced, there is some African influence such as rhythm and African banjo music as mentioned
during the lecture. Ragtime rhythm was the rhythms of the black dancers who used their heels to make
drum sounds, or to that of the black church singers who could vary the rhythms of a Christian hymn so
much that a white Christian could not even recognize it (Tirro, pp.37).
On the other hand, Blues were basically from work songs of African Americans slaves at the time. It is
a native American music, the product of the black man in this country, or, to put it more exactly the
way I have come to think about it, blues could not exist if the African captives had not become
American captives (pp.17), said Jones and Baraka. In Jazz A History, Frank Tirro wisely analyzes and
explains the relationship between the unique background and

Laundry Detergents As A Cleansing Agent
Introduction
Laundry detergents are a cleansing agent that is widely used in the industry to clean laundry. The term
detergent refers to mixtures of chemical compounds including Alkyl Sulphonates, which are similar to
soap but less affected by hard water (Farlex, 2014). Like soap, detergent increases the ability of water
to penetrate fabric and break down greases and dirt, however they are derived from organic acids
rather than fatty acids (Mifflin, 2005). A detergent is an ion or molecule that contains both polar and
nonpolar components. The polar component allows the detergent to dissolve in the water, whereas the
nonpolar component solubilizes greasy materials that are the usual target of the cleaning process.
Their molecules then surround the particles of grease and dirt, allowing them to be carried away thus
leaving your clothes clean. This EEI explores the performance of two different laundry powders (Fab
and Woolworths select Home brand) in different types of water; ranging from soft to hard. These
detergents were compared and analysed in different types of water from varying locations to
determine whether water hardness has an effect on the cleaning ability of detergents, and whether
products should be specifically formulated depending on the type of water.

that each play important roles in the laundry process depending on the cleaning tasks

Religious Tolerance In Chaim Potock s The Chosen
Religious Tolerance in The Chosen Religious tolerance, one of the major topics of the world today,
rarely shows itself honestly. Yet, what is religious tolerance and what qualities does it display?
Honestly, Religious tolerance means holding true to one s own beliefs, while tolerating others beliefs.
Perfectly demonstrated religious tolerance does not mean agreeing with someone s views, but instead
tolerating them, if it causes no hurt toward others. Acting intolerantly of another ideas does not
include speaking about one s own ideas, but instead of hating and persecuting others because of their
ideas. Beautifully is religious tolerance demonstrated by the characters of Chaim Potock s classic, The
Chosen. The Characters who demonstrate religious tolerance include David Malter, Reb Saunders, and
Reuven Malter. Firstly, David Malter, the father of Reuven Malter, beautifully demonstrates religious
tolerance. David is a rabbi, a teacher, a zealous Zionist. Zionism is the belief that the Jews should
rebuild Jerusalem to create a Jewish state. However, many Jews such as Reb Saunders hate Zionism
and slander Zionists like David. Courteously, David tolerates their persecution and though he

Compare And Contrast John Meany And Owen Meany
Owen Meany and John Wheelwright; Effect of Spirituality
A Prayer for Owen Meany analyzes the relationship between various depths of spirituality in
comparison to mundane life. The novel by John Irving uses characters such as Owen Meany and John
Wheelwright, to juxtapose the contrasting nature of faith and doubt, and fate and free will.
John Wheelwright s and Owen Meany s differing attributes highlight the use of contrast within A
Prayer for Owen Meany. While Owen Meany tends to be a leader, John is a follower where his
primary experiences tend to be due to Owen. Furthermore, their different appearances further illustrate
their differences while John is a typical male, Owen appears childlike in stature with a rodent quality
to his appearance. Consequently, these comparisons between the two characters highlight the
underlying theme of spirituality within the novel. Owen Meany has a continuing belief in God, even
taking it as far as saying that God has a specific plan for him. GOD HAS TAKEN YOUR MOTHER.
MY HANDS WERE THE INSTRUMENT. GOD HAS TAKEN MY HANDS. I AM GOD S
INSTRUMENT (page 90) This quote illustrates the absolute belief that Owen has in God; despite the
fact that Owen has taken the life from Tabitha Wheelwright, mother of Johnny, he chalks it up to fate
and God s will. However, John Wheelwright doubts the ideologies of Christianity as he changes his
denomination within the Christian community regularly. This contrast is displayed when the two boys
are young

Burrell High School Jazz Concert Report
On Friday, May 18, I attended the Burrell High School Jazz Band Concert. Over the concert, a band
played for the first half, there were then chamber groups that played in between, the second band next,
and then a combined band with alumni. I felt that the structure of the concert flowed nicely, as the
chamber music in between was refreshing from the jazz. My favorite chamber piece was an African
piece involving bongos and soprano saxophone. There was no theme to the music that was played.
The concert involved different genres of jazz, including Latin, contemporary, big band, and Dixieland.
I felt that there was a good mix of songs and it did not affect the concert since there was no theme.

The Last Discovery Of America Rhetorical Analysis
The Ultimate Persuasion
Persuasion is asserted into many works using the methods of ethos, pathos and logos. Ethos is a call to
authority while claiming a sense of dominance, a method where the author exemplifies his credentials.
Pathos appeals to the emotional side of readers with the hope of coaxing them into sympathizing with
author, therefore succumbing to the ideas presented in the work. The purpose of logos is to persuade
the reader by proving a point logically, accompanied with reason. Various authors use persuasion in
order to inflict their opinions upon readers. In the memoir Brown: The Last Discovery of America, by
Richard Rodriguez, the author employs persuasion with the rhetorical features of ethos, pathos and
logos in order to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rodriguez demonstrates this rhetorical style through the use of pity throughout the memoir. He
attempts to pull the reader into complying with his conclusions through the use of pity in his stories,
especially with racial incidents. Claiming that he grew up wanting to be white, Rodriguez uses his
race and the desire of wanting to be colorless as a way to generate pity from the reader (140). Using
the comparison of young kids picking sides, he expresses that brown was like the skinny or fat kids
left over after the team captains chose sides. You take the rest my cue to wander away to the sidelines,
to wander away (5). Rodriguez tries to fabricate pity and sympathy from the reader by expressing a
story of heartache, and comparing the atrocious classifications of race to innocent children picking
teams. Not only does Rodrigues use the pity card when talking about his race but also with his
lifestyle and social stature. Reaching out to the audience in his memoir, Rodriguez asks does anybody
know what I m talking about? Ah, me. I am alone in my brown study. I can say anything I like.
Nobody listens (38). With this remark, Richard tries to portray himself as an outsider or an outcaste.
People empathize with outcastes and usually do what they are capable of in pursuance of making the
loner feel accepted. He uses pathos to spawn pity

Electric Cars Essay
You shower, brush your teeth, turn off the lights and plug in your...car. This seems like an estranged
concept but will be or at least should be a reality for most motorists. Electric cars are a better means of
transportation than gasoline powered cars, due to the fact that they save you money in multiple ways,
help combat global warming and boost a country s economy.
To begin with, electric cars are better for the planet. They decrease the emission of greenhouse gases
and increase air quality. Initially, the emissions free quality of EVs also stems from the design of the
motor. It is powered by a process called induction which uses electric and magnetic forces to make the
motor spin. This way there is no combustion reaction that would

Also, the state of Colorado offers $6,000 worth of tax credit for the owner of a new EV (Gorzelany). It
is said that EVs are often more expensive but considering savings made from maintenance, energy and
compensation expenses; an EV is a good investment. The two main points discussed will create an
interest and incentive to allow the following point to become reality.
At last, the point that will most likely spur people to change their mode of transportation is that EVs
help countries economies. The need for the manufacture of electric cars and the installment of a
charging infrastructure will create jobs. In response to critics who say that petrol factory will be left
jobless, that is not the case because these workers will often be the same ones who will work on EVs;
these automotive industry workers have the necessary skills to build all kinds of vehicles regardless of
a change in the drivetrain. Not only will the manufacturing require a large workforce but also the
construction, maintenance, and operation of charging stations: Recent electric vehicle penetration
brings the necessity of a high number of charging stations (YAGCITEKIN, UZUNOGLU, and
KARAKAS).
All in all, there is insurmountable evidence pointing to the idea that electric vehicles are the superior
alternative to petrol vehicles and that they should be peoples new form of transport. Car

Analyzing The Short Story Popular Mechanics By Raymond...
Raymond Carver, the author of the short story Popular Mechanics, repeats words to influence the
importance of the word and to describe. Carver repeats the word Baby, to show that the story revolves
around it. The author repeats the word suitcase to inform the reader that someone will leave soon.
With this evidence the reader can tell that Carver repeats words to explain the importance of it or to
inform.
Carver frequently repeats the word baby to imply that the story revolves around the baby. The way the
author uses the word baby is mainly in dialogue, both parents repeatedly say I want the baby. To end
the story carver uses the baby as the main subject, because both parents are grasping the baby as tight

The Great Storm Essay
The Great Storm
At the edge of the 19th century, Galveston, Texas was roaring with a occupancy of roughly 40,000
residents. Galveston had become a flourishing commercial port since the city s founding in 1839. The
Island had surmounted countless tropical storms, which the city survived each time but on September

The 1900 s storm came to town with devastating winds reaching up to 130 140 miles per hour and
storm surges that climbed to 15 feet. The death toll climbed each moment making the hurricane the

their meningitis shot up to date before they are allowed into a classroom. They also need to submit
their high school transcripts. To be able to get accepted to WTAMU, students need to obtain 2.0 GPA.

tips are designed to help you have the most beautiful garden and lawn possible. So grab your garden
blower and let s begin the process. Just keep in mind to never walk on your grass if there is a frost on
it.
The first thing you will want to do is remove dead plants from the garden. These are the plants that
thrived in the warmer summer months and are now withered on the ground. By removing these plants
the overall appearance of your yard will greatly improve. During the removal process, you may also
choose to plant new flowers and vegetables in your garden. You should ensure these new additions are

Take your garden blower to it one more time just to ensure there was nothing left behind as well. Then
starting from the edge of your lawn, then working backwards fertilize your lawn. As you do this
process, be sure you have an even coating across the entire area. When you are done, make sure you
do a full watering to ensure that the area remains moist. In about a week, you will want to reseed your
entire lawn paying close attention to any bare or yellow patches that might turn up after you have done
the fertilizing process.
After you have setup your entire yard and have prepared it for the cooler months, be sure that you
follow the next piece of garden care advice. You will need to take your sprinkler system and wrap it
well. Any watering that you might need to do in the winter months should be done by hand with a
detachable hose. This will help you to prevent freezing and having a sprinkler system that can cause
your problems next year.
Something to keep in mind during this entire process is some plants can t tolerate the cold well. If you
are expecting a freeze at anytime, be sure that you cover weaker plants with a warm blanket or plant
cover. This way, you keep them looking great for the next

Flat Tax Vs. The Progressive Tax System
When comparing the benefits and issues between the flat tax and the progressive tax, it is important to
understand the way these two systems operate in today s economy. The flat tax can be defined as a tax
that requires every individual to pay the same rate of deduction regardless of their income. On the
other hand, a progressive tax can be defined as a tax where the tax rate is increased based on the
income a person earn. This system is operated through the use of tax brackets, where the levels of
income are divided into different ranges with each range having a tax rate more significant than the
range below it. Furthermore, when evaluating the efficiency of both of these tax systems, one may
discover that the progressive tax system provides several different factors that contribute to the
efficiency of the economy in United States. The progressive tax system enables the government to

One of the conflicts that people may argue toward this system is that it may discourage people from
earning more income because their higher income may be taxed at a higher rate. For instance, since
any head of the household who earns an income between $13,250 to $50,400 is taxed at the rate of
%15, they may lose more of their savings when compared to the tax bracket below them, which taxes
5% less. Therefore, people may consider maintaining their income at anywhere below $13,250 to
avoid having it taxed a higher rate. In addition, some may also argue that this system fails to
encourage people to invest in businesses because of the significant rates the government may tax on
their additional profit and the initial opening of their establishment. This leads to a form of
socioeconomic inequality between those who can afford to pay the tax on opening a business and
those who can only afford to invest in purchasing a

High School Sports Make Student Athletes
High school sports make student athletes strive for better success in their education. Sure some
Schools have a minimum G.P.A requirement of 2.0, and to get that all your classes have to be C or
better. Well that s better than letting them have a 1.0 and letting them play. It makes them have
something worth studying for, For example my friend Bryan Garcia does not like school or work but
he is always looking for ways to make his grades better so that he may play with the John F. Kennedy

Descriptive Essay About The Woods
The Woods There s been stories floating around regarding the forest lining the edge of town. Some
folk around here think that there s animals and creatures beyond imagination past the treeline, others
think that s a bunch of bologna. One night, about twenty years ago, a young boy ran away from home
and fled to the forest. Forty eight hours later the police declare him missing, and for three weeks
police, detectives, and civilian volunteers were searching for the boy. And so the weeks turned into
months, and months turned into years, but the little boy never came home. Dude, what are you doing?
Zach yelped, scurrying after his friend, tripping on branches. Earlier that evening, Carson, Zach, and a
few other of their friends were hanging out at the annual Halloween bonfire. They were heading home
when one of the boys decided they should take a shortcut, taking an alleyway behind the grocery store
that cuts to a bumpy run down street littered with trash and cracks. Coincidentally, this winding road
cuts a corner through the forest, emerging on the other side of town. Wandering along the pothole
laden street, the wind starts howling, and the group hears a strange noise from amongst the trees,
snapping branches and crunching leaves. Stopping, the boys peer in every direction, but notice nothing
except the trees in the pale moonlight. Did you hear that? I think something s out there , one of the
boys stated, peering through the branches to his left. No way man,

Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol
Can Charles Dickens be considered one of the greatest writers of all time? Many think yes, definitely.
But what else could he be honored for? Charles Dickens is one of many well known authors, and that
is credited to his various books, such as Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, and many more. Through all
of Dickens s momentous writings, he has influenced the modern world in many forms, from the way
we see certain phrases, to the way we see people affected by poverty. Many of Dickens s books are
still studied in schools today, one of those being A Christmas Carol, in which he talks about England
being smothered in snow. As a result of the phrase A White Christmas, Dickens has popularized the
idea of a perfect, snowy Christmas throughout

I. Economic Factors
III.I Natural Resources and Environmental Regulations
Based on the Economic Structure and Context report on Spain, it identifies Spain as being well known
amongst Europe for having a mining industry that produces natural resources such as stone and
marble. Spain s agricultural sector was once worthy of noting but over time it has diminished to little
of importance, however, Spain is still notably recognized for being a leading producer of olive oil and
wine (Economic Structure and Context, pg 25). Spain is currently using environmental regulations
approved by the European Union and requiring national implementation as well as implementation

Rural Beggars In The Ballet Class By Edgar Degas
are going onto the field after the harvest and picking up the leftovers of corn. They are a type of rural
beggars in an old traditional way. At the distance grain stack are seen piled up and the people who
harvested them are bent over exhausted after harvesting all the crops. Large bundles of grain are
visible in the background. In the foreground the three women are seen working almost in a solitary
manner, collecting the leftovers to feed their families. On close observation it is seen that they have a
white cloth tied around their hips which looks a bit heavy indicating they have been collecting these
leftovers for a while. Yet this amount is very small compared to the enormous harvest in the
background. A man sitting on a horse can be seen in the background which looks like he is supervising
the work done by the harvesters. He pays no attention to these three women at all. Even though these
women are some kind of beggars they still appear strong and well fed. The colour used on the women
is contrasting to the background. They are bent and hence and below the horizon line. Their bent over
round shape somehow blends and adds a rhythm to the piles of harvest in the background. Millet is

Degas attended the opera and was fascinated by the ballet dancers. He was allowed backstage by a
friend. He studied every movement of the dancers, their body language, each pause and every
expression on their faces. In his painting the dancers are seen stretching and adjusting their outfits. His
fascination was more towards the rehearsal than the performance on stage. The dancers in his painting
are seen playing with their hair and ribbons giving little attention to their master. They look exhausted
in the painting. Even though this is the work of an impressionist a little bit of perspective can be seen

Pathophysiology Essay
1. A 21 year old college student notices that she frequently develops cold sores during stressful final
exam week. 1. What is the association between stress and the immune system?
The human body has a built in stress response system that usually self regulates. When a threat is
perceived the body deploys white blood cells to the area of the body that is under attack (Segerstrom
amp; Miller, 2006). Because of this, less important cellular activities are reduced and the immune
system is left vulnerable. When the body perceives a threat there are three phases it goes through.
(Story, 2012). The first is the alarm stage, in which the sympathetic nervous system is stimulated and

Although research opinions vary on the cause of lymphomas, it is known that T cell lymphomas are
very rare. Lymphomas are thought to be caused by the damaged genes that control the development of
the body s blood cells ( B and T Cell Lymphomas, n.d.) The B cells and T cells play different roles in
the body. T cells can be helper cells, suppressor cells or killer cells (Story, 2012). It is the

Case Study Of Tanishq
Tanishq started in 1994 and challenged the established family jeweller system prevalent in India. They
have set up production and sourcing bases with thorough research of the jewellery crafts of India.
Their factory located at Hosur, Tamil Nadu (India) spreads over 135,000 sq ft
(12,500 m2). Tanishq was launched as a range of jewellery and jewellery watches meant for the
European American markets, but later on shifted focus on Indian markets to tap the domestic
opportunity too.
They spread awareness to the public about alleged impurity in Gold .
Tanishq introduced innovations like Karatmeter, the only nondestructive means to check the purity of
gold and machine made jewellery. In India, Tanishq has country wide presence. In November 2012, ...

Industry watchers were extremely skeptical of Tanishq and doubts were being cast over its prospects.
Tanishq began by offering jewellery in the 18 carat gold range, with designs borrowed heavily from
contemporary European brands. The company justified its decision saying that it wanted to be
different from the traditional Indian offerings.
Tanishq was the largest overseas chain in US with 1,200 outlets. In the year 2000, exports contributed
10% to the company s turnover. The story of Tanishq, once written off as a losing proposition, making
a remarkable turnaround was an example of a company single mindedly working to make its own
mark in the tradition bound Indian jewellery market. Behind this success was, of course, a well
planned and wellexecuted marketing plan.

The Confessions Of Nat Turner Book Summary
I have recently completed the reading of The Confessions of Nat Turner written by William Styron.
This book pivots around the life of Nat Turner, a slave who got arrested for the slave rebellion that he
had created. Confessing to the wrongs that Nat has committed, the author uses the first person point of
view perspective to gradually steer the reader to the events that led to the Slave Rebellion of 1831.
The Confessions of Nat Turner recapitulates The Confessions of Nat Turner: The Leader of the Late
Insurrection in Southampton, Virginia , a first hand account of Nat s Story. The element of this book
that grasped my attention, was the rusty look and feel the book pages have therefore, signaling that
this book is probably from the 20th century, in fact in 1967 this book became published. Furthermore,
this book withholds interesting historical facts. The reason being this book choice is that, this specific
introduces a topic that has tremendously affected the lives of many people furthermore, a topic that
fascinates me.
This is a very interesting book because of the unique style in which William chose to present his
secondary hand of information. Features of this book that fascinates me extremely, is the excessive use
of biblical terms and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This book would most be ideal for people interested in history or the historical context of what slavery
was and has become. I would strongly recommend this book for readers who want to pursue a career
in history as well as those who may not. Additionally, this book provides the reader with knowledge,
along with the author s use of diction and creative writing skills that helps to visualize the scene. The
grizzled rusty feature of the book pages in some shape or the other also helps the reader picture the
time period of Nat s confessions, in 1830s Virginia. This book is breathtaking and you will most
certainly not regret buying this

Ultimately, in 1990, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of
surfactants in neonates. Since then, surfactant therapy is considered as one of the few treatments that
has reduced general mortality in preterm newborns with RDS. On the basis of production, surfactant is
divided into two types: natural and synthetic (Roger Soll et al. 2001). The meta analysis of number of
smaller studies comparing synthetic and natural surfactants have shown that synthetic surfactants with
their slower response might be supported for prophylaxis use, whereas natural surfactants with their
fast response might be more suitable for very sick infants at danger of barotraumas and pulmonary air
leaks (Richard A et al,2014). A meta analysis comparing the effectiveness of prophylactic vs. selective
exogenous surfactant administration, carried out by Rojas Reyes et al., 2012 showed that prophylactic
administration reduces the rate of pneumothorax, pneumonic interstitial emphysema, neonatal
mortality and death to more marked extent than specific treatment (Rojas Reyes et al., 2012).
Comparing the meta analysis of six randomized controlled trails (RCTs) on the benefits of early ( 2
hours) and delayed ( 2 hours) surfactant administration, (Richard playka et al., 2002). It has been
deduced that early selective surfactant administration to infants with RDS requiring assisted
ventilation leads to a reduced risk of acute pulmonary injury and a decreased risk of

“A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings by Gabriel Garcia- Marque
A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings :Gabriel Garcia Marquez story A Very Old Man with
Enormous Wings , written in 1955, is about a family harboring what is thought to be a fallen old angel
man , initially thought to be on his way to take their ailing child away. The angel must have been
coming for the child, but the poor fellow is so old that the rain knocked him down (Marquez, 1955).
The family not knowing how to treat the situation embarks on a journey of mixed emotions of whether
the man is good or evil, strange creature or angel. We will journey down the road of evaluation of the
magical realism within this story.

3). Good and evil played a role in the fact that the family used the creature for greed, Elisenda thought
of the idea to build a fence and charge 5 cents admission to see it (Marquez, 1955, p. 3). The rest of
the world wanted to use the creature to help heal possible illnesses and that is selfish, many traveled
with the hopes to find health (Marquez, 1955, p. 3). I felt this was evil because they lacked the
creature up for the benefits of everyone not considering the creature s feelings. This how some of the
good and evil coexisted.
Angel or Not? This was at time hard to determine if the old man was an angel or a bird of some origin
I thought vulture at times, due to the description of buzzard like wings and that the he nestled in a nest
(Marquez, 1955). To further my thought of him being a bird, is that when they tried to feed him what
was thought the food of angels, mothballs, the man refused (Marquez, 1955). Nevertheless, if I had
not paid attention to the wording used I might have gone with the old man was a bird. However, the
story uses a lot of language to define divine beings. Like when Father Gonzaga had a providential end
to his tribulations (Marquez, 1955 p. 4). This meant that the Gonzaga had a define foresight or
intervention, similar to use of celestial meaning form the heavens or sky (TheFreeDictionary.com).

Isolation In The Painted Door And The Black Cat
Gothic Fiction: Universal Isolation
Isolation has a profound effect on the human psyche, it can motivate a man or drive him mad. Within
The Painted Door and The Black Cat, isolation and its effects are present and those effects impact the
characters actions. The Black Cat and The Painted Door are comparable in their showcase of
humanities perverse capabilities, by using the gothic elements these capabilities are shown to lead to
their downfall.
For gothic fiction, gloom and horror are often personified through secondary outlets. In the case of

John s wife imagines John walking in after she had slept with Steven, this paranoia stems from her
knowing that she had betrayed the only person she knew and trusted. This vision sets up the climax,
but it also reflects on her lack of certainty about the situation and this leads to her blaming herself for
John s death and ultimately her being left in isolation. In The Black Cat however, the narrator holds an
absolute certainty in the success of his plan to hide his wife s body, and ultimately his overconfidence
is the root of his demise. While the narrators demise can be attributed to the cat as seen with I was
answered by a voice from within the tomb! ... a cry the blame also falls on him for disrupting the cat
and thus breaking his isolation driven confidence. Both Edgar Alan Poe and Sinclair Ross utilize the
elements of gothic fiction to set their characters upon the path towards their demise, however whereas
Edgar focuses more on the malice of man and the self made destruction that follows, Sinclair instead
focuses on the innocence of little decisions that leads to

Multicultural Counseling Critique Essay
Multicultural Counseling Critique: Counseling Utilization by Ethnic Minority College Students
Although the practice of counseling has evolved considerably since its inception, the concept of
multicultural competence remains novel. Engrossed in the lives of every clinician are underlined
biases and prejudices that act as filters in which every interaction with a clients is affected. Current
research on the topic of multicultural counseling has shown that although multicultural awareness is
on the rise there is still a remarkable gap in research regarding the use of counseling service and
outcomes for racial and ethnic minorities (Kerney,Draper, Baron, 2005). Insights such as these have
encouraged researchers to investigate multicultural ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another is the potential stigma associated with the use of mental health services. Closely associated
with this stigma is the belief in seeking help from religious leaders, such as pastors, and or priest. The
authors suggest that a combination of these factors coupled with a lack of clinician multicultural
awareness, serves as a powerful force keeping individuals of ethnic and racial backgrounds from
utilizing counseling services (Kerney,Draper, Baron, 2005). Due to these factors the researchers
hypothesized that ethnic and racial minority participation in counseling services will be lower than
that of their Caucasian counterparts. Furthermore they suggest that ethnic and racial minorities will
present for counseling services with increased severity of symptomatology. Lastly researchers propose
that Caucasians students will report more positive outcomes than minority students even when
severity and number of session are controlled.
In order to test their hypothesis researchers gathered students who attended colleges that are part of
the Research Consortium of Counseling and Psychological Services, a collection of state run
institutions focused on furthering the efforts of university research. One thousand one hundred and
sixty six Participants were selected based off the criteria that they had filled out the intake

  • 2. Essay on Ragtime and Blues Influence on Jazz Ara Cho Ethno 50A 803 672 412 October 14, 2011 Seeing Ragtime and Blues as Parents of Jazz Jazz is a music genre that has complex characteristics and history of development and thus many musicians and scholars face troubles in defining what jazz is. In general, jazz is believed to have born in New Orleans. Jazz developed for the pleasure of the social dancers. According to the Understanding Jazz: What Is Jazz? of John F. Kennedy center for the Performing Arts, Jazz was created mainly by Afro Americans, and had elements of European and Afro American culture. Also, it emphasizes few elements of Jazz, which are swing feel, syncopation, and improvisation. These different culture and elements of jazz may be explained by how jazz ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thus the similarity between ragtime and blues is significant but there are numerous differences between the two music styles. First, their origin was different. Even though they both had African influence as mentioned, ragtime was more strongly influenced by European music style, and blues was heavily African music style. According to Durk Sutro in his book Jazz for Dummies, Ragtime was European influenced, in the sense that it was composed, not improvised, and featured carefully crafted melodies and harmonies...ragtime could sound concisely European (ch.5). Although European influenced, there is some African influence such as rhythm and African banjo music as mentioned during the lecture. Ragtime rhythm was the rhythms of the black dancers who used their heels to make drum sounds, or to that of the black church singers who could vary the rhythms of a Christian hymn so much that a white Christian could not even recognize it (Tirro, pp.37). On the other hand, Blues were basically from work songs of African Americans slaves at the time. It is a native American music, the product of the black man in this country, or, to put it more exactly the way I have come to think about it, blues could not exist if the African captives had not become American captives (pp.17), said Jones and Baraka. In Jazz A History, Frank Tirro wisely analyzes and explains the relationship between the unique background and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Laundry Detergents As A Cleansing Agent Introduction Laundry detergents are a cleansing agent that is widely used in the industry to clean laundry. The term detergent refers to mixtures of chemical compounds including Alkyl Sulphonates, which are similar to soap but less affected by hard water (Farlex, 2014). Like soap, detergent increases the ability of water to penetrate fabric and break down greases and dirt, however they are derived from organic acids rather than fatty acids (Mifflin, 2005). A detergent is an ion or molecule that contains both polar and nonpolar components. The polar component allows the detergent to dissolve in the water, whereas the nonpolar component solubilizes greasy materials that are the usual target of the cleaning process. Their molecules then surround the particles of grease and dirt, allowing them to be carried away thus leaving your clothes clean. This EEI explores the performance of two different laundry powders (Fab and Woolworths select Home brand) in different types of water; ranging from soft to hard. These detergents were compared and analysed in different types of water from varying locations to determine whether water hardness has an effect on the cleaning ability of detergents, and whether products should be specifically formulated depending on the type of water. Basic laundry powders Laundry detergents such as Fab and Woolworths Select Home brand are composed of many elements that each play important roles in the laundry process depending on the cleaning tasks ... • 6. Religious Tolerance In Chaim Potock s The Chosen Religious Tolerance in The Chosen Religious tolerance, one of the major topics of the world today, rarely shows itself honestly. Yet, what is religious tolerance and what qualities does it display? Honestly, Religious tolerance means holding true to one s own beliefs, while tolerating others beliefs. Perfectly demonstrated religious tolerance does not mean agreeing with someone s views, but instead tolerating them, if it causes no hurt toward others. Acting intolerantly of another ideas does not include speaking about one s own ideas, but instead of hating and persecuting others because of their ideas. Beautifully is religious tolerance demonstrated by the characters of Chaim Potock s classic, The Chosen. The Characters who demonstrate religious tolerance include David Malter, Reb Saunders, and Reuven Malter. Firstly, David Malter, the father of Reuven Malter, beautifully demonstrates religious tolerance. David is a rabbi, a teacher, a zealous Zionist. Zionism is the belief that the Jews should rebuild Jerusalem to create a Jewish state. However, many Jews such as Reb Saunders hate Zionism and slander Zionists like David. • 7. Compare And Contrast John Meany And Owen Meany Owen Meany and John Wheelwright; Effect of Spirituality A Prayer for Owen Meany analyzes the relationship between various depths of spirituality in comparison to mundane life. The novel by John Irving uses characters such as Owen Meany and John Wheelwright, to juxtapose the contrasting nature of faith and doubt, and fate and free will. John Wheelwright s and Owen Meany s differing attributes highlight the use of contrast within A Prayer for Owen Meany. While Owen Meany tends to be a leader, John is a follower where his primary experiences tend to be due to Owen. Furthermore, their different appearances further illustrate their differences while John is a typical male, Owen appears childlike in stature with a rodent quality to his appearance. Consequently, these comparisons between the two characters highlight the underlying theme of spirituality within the novel. Owen Meany has a continuing belief in God, even taking it as far as saying that God has a specific plan for him. GOD HAS TAKEN YOUR MOTHER. MY HANDS WERE THE INSTRUMENT. GOD HAS TAKEN MY HANDS. I AM GOD S INSTRUMENT (page 90) This quote illustrates the absolute belief that Owen has in God; despite the fact that Owen has taken the life from Tabitha Wheelwright, mother of Johnny, he chalks it up to fate and God s will. However, John Wheelwright doubts the ideologies of Christianity as he changes his denomination within the Christian community regularly. This contrast is displayed when the two boys are young ... • 8. Burrell High School Jazz Concert Report On Friday, May 18, I attended the Burrell High School Jazz Band Concert. Over the concert, a band played for the first half, there were then chamber groups that played in between, the second band next, and then a combined band with alumni. I felt that the structure of the concert flowed nicely, as the chamber music in between was refreshing from the jazz. My favorite chamber piece was an African piece involving bongos and soprano saxophone. There was no theme to the music that was played. The concert involved different genres of jazz, including Latin, contemporary, big band, and Dixieland. I felt that there was a good mix of songs and it did not affect the concert since there was no theme. Some high points of the concert involved ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. The Last Discovery Of America Rhetorical Analysis The Ultimate Persuasion Persuasion is asserted into many works using the methods of ethos, pathos and logos. Ethos is a call to authority while claiming a sense of dominance, a method where the author exemplifies his credentials. Pathos appeals to the emotional side of readers with the hope of coaxing them into sympathizing with author, therefore succumbing to the ideas presented in the work. The purpose of logos is to persuade the reader by proving a point logically, accompanied with reason. Various authors use persuasion in order to inflict their opinions upon readers. In the memoir Brown: The Last Discovery of America, by Richard Rodriguez, the author employs persuasion with the rhetorical features of ethos, pathos and logos in order to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Rodriguez demonstrates this rhetorical style through the use of pity throughout the memoir. He attempts to pull the reader into complying with his conclusions through the use of pity in his stories, especially with racial incidents. Claiming that he grew up wanting to be white, Rodriguez uses his race and the desire of wanting to be colorless as a way to generate pity from the reader (140). Using the comparison of young kids picking sides, he expresses that brown was like the skinny or fat kids left over after the team captains chose sides. You take the rest my cue to wander away to the sidelines, to wander away (5). Rodriguez tries to fabricate pity and sympathy from the reader by expressing a story of heartache, and comparing the atrocious classifications of race to innocent children picking teams. Not only does Rodrigues use the pity card when talking about his race but also with his lifestyle and social stature. Reaching out to the audience in his memoir, Rodriguez asks does anybody know what I m talking about? Ah, me. I am alone in my brown study. I can say anything I like. Nobody listens (38). With this remark, Richard tries to portray himself as an outsider or an outcaste. People empathize with outcastes and usually do what they are capable of in pursuance of making the loner feel accepted. He uses pathos to spawn pity ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Electric Cars Essay You shower, brush your teeth, turn off the lights and plug in your...car. This seems like an estranged concept but will be or at least should be a reality for most motorists. Electric cars are a better means of transportation than gasoline powered cars, due to the fact that they save you money in multiple ways, help combat global warming and boost a country s economy. To begin with, electric cars are better for the planet. They decrease the emission of greenhouse gases and increase air quality. Initially, the emissions free quality of EVs also stems from the design of the motor. It is powered by a process called induction which uses electric and magnetic forces to make the motor spin. The two main points discussed will create an interest and incentive to allow the following point to become reality. At last, the point that will most likely spur people to change their mode of transportation is that EVs help countries economies. The need for the manufacture of electric cars and the installment of a charging infrastructure will create jobs. In response to critics who say that petrol factory will be left jobless, that is not the case because these workers will often be the same ones who will work on EVs; these automotive industry workers have the necessary skills to build all kinds of vehicles regardless of a change in the drivetrain. Not only will the manufacturing require a large workforce but also the construction, maintenance, and operation of charging stations: Recent electric vehicle penetration brings the necessity of a high number of charging stations (YAGCITEKIN, UZUNOGLU, and KARAKAS). All in all, there is insurmountable evidence pointing to the idea that electric vehicles are the superior alternative to petrol vehicles and that they should be peoples new form of transport. The Progressive Tax System When comparing the benefits and issues between the flat tax and the progressive tax, it is important to understand the way these two systems operate in today s economy. The flat tax can be defined as a tax that requires every individual to pay the same rate of deduction regardless of their income. On the other hand, a progressive tax can be defined as a tax where the tax rate is increased based on the income a person earn. This system is operated through the use of tax brackets, where the levels of income are divided into different ranges with each range having a tax rate more significant than the range below it. One of the conflicts that people may argue toward this system is that it may discourage people from earning more income because their higher income may be taxed at a higher rate. Therefore, people may consider maintaining their income at anywhere below $13,250 to avoid having it taxed a higher rate. In addition, some may also argue that this system fails to encourage people to invest in businesses because of the significant rates the government may tax on their additional profit and the initial opening of their establishment. This leads to a form of socioeconomic inequality between those who can afford to pay the tax on opening a business and those who can only afford to invest in purchasing a ...
