Comparison Of The Olympia And Yasumasa Morimura s Futago
Nude figures have been featured in art works since around 30 to 25,000 B.C. And throughout the
history of art, we can see a lot of artists being inspired and influenced by great talents before them, in
one way or another they would carry the style or ideas of those previous artists into their own art and
create new masterpieces. One particular example is Édouard Manet s Olympia from the Realism
period, and Yasumasa Morimura s Futago. The two paintings share great similarities in their
composition, but the content and purpose of the paintings, and style wise the two pieces are very
different. Édouard Manet, a French Realism painter, who set the roots for Modernism, painted
Olympia with oil on canvas. In Manet s Olympia we could see a lot of inspiration and influence from
Titian s Venus of Urbino from the Venetian Renaissance period. In the foreground of Olympia, there is
a nude woman wearing nothing but a bracelet, necklace, a pair of earrings and slippers. The woman is

And it is for that reason the painting received so much criticism. It was too real. The nude woman in
the painting was not an idealized mystical subject like the woman in Titian s Venus of Urbino
anymore, but it was based on a real woman, Victorine Meurent. The reality of the piece brought all the
harsh criticism onto itself, because it raised a lot of issues regarding prostitution and women s place
and roles in the French society. Another reason the painting shocked the crowd other than the realness
of it is its style, how it was painted. Olympia was painted roughly with clear brushstrokes, poor details
(everything was also very flat), and stark value

Conflict and Negotiations
I. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Conflict is a process that begins when one party perceives that another party has negatively affected,
or is about to be negatively affect, something that the first party cares about. It also encompasses a
wide range of conflicts that people experience in organizations.
Conflicts are usually caused by poor communication, lack of openness and failure to respond to
employee needs. Human Relations View Conflict as the belief that conflict is a natural and inevitable
outcome in any group. While Interactionist View Conflict as the belief that conflict is not only a
positive force in a group but that it is absolutely necessary for a group to perform effectively.

Ccld Unit 1 Assignment
1.) By the end of my study away semester, I hope to have learned an international perspective on
American Foreign Policy, a greater understanding of the formation of Australia, and how conflict has
shaped it, and finally a greater understanding of the cultural differences that define the Australian
peoples. I hope to attend IFSA Butler s University of Sydney program. The program is modeled after
the Oxford style and will give me the chance to experience it without taking a high pressure Oxford
style tutorial at my current school Williams. The program also offers over 4,000 courses on a
multitude of topics within my majors that Williams does not cover. For instance, we currently have no
courses on the Pre World War 1 Era, in particular, the impact this era had the British colonies,
European foreign policy, and imperialism. In regards to my personal life, I accept my study away

A Senior Prefect is a campus leader and positive role model for the student body in general and as a
mentor for residents of a dormitory house. As Prefect in the Dickinson House, I was charged with
maintaining a safe and comfortable atmosphere for all 45 house members. In addition, the role also
required I build a solid relationship with the Housemasters in order to act as the primary student
liaison on house issues.
A bullying situation that occurred in the fall of my senior year that required me to be effective on all
these fronts. All year long, I engaged in frequent and informal dialogues with house members. My
goal was to be approachable and inclusive with the entire house. The resulting relationships created a
non threatening environment in which students shared concerns about their Dickinson House
experience. Fortunately, the victim of the bullying felt safe in coming to me as Prefect. The bully, who
had previous conduct violations, was expelled from the

The Collective History Of Scotland
Both Robert Burns and William Wordsworth use the past in their poetry to inspire readers to change
their future but the two poets go about it in very different ways. Burns focuses on the collective
history of Scotland, drawing on its folk songs, national heroes and culture to create revolutionary
sentiment in his readers. Wordsworth sits at almost the other end of the spectrum he focuses in on the
past of individuals and how their futures could be changed through their mind sets.
Unlike Wordsworth, who forges a connection with nature through quiet contemplation and observation
of the natural world, Burns connection with nature is mediated through his experiences working on
farms. This means that both authors approach nature and the Earth in very different ways. Wordsworth
calls upon the readers to leave the cities they inhabit and to go out into the country, in order to
meditate on the emotions and experiences brought about by truly looking at the landscape. While this
is one way to expand one s mind it was not achievable by most of the urban working class of the time.
Wordsworth, as a member of the upper classes, had more leisure time to go out into the countryside
and there to do but experience the scenery. The Urban working class of this era would not have had
the free time to do so. They were busy working long hours doing hard physical labour almost every
day. To take this time off would have cost them in missed hours they could have been working and
money they could

Two Differences Of Disneyland And Walt Disney World
Although Disneyland and Walt Disney World (WDW) are Walt Disney s ideas being portrayed, the
two parks have quite a few differences along with a vast amount of similarities. For example, Disney
World is comprised of four parks, whereas Disneyland is only made up of two. Disneyland cut the
ceremonial ribbon in 1955 and is located in Anaheim, California. It included features such as Sleeping
Beauty Castle, eighteen attractions, one resort hotel, and a monorail system. On the other hand, Walt
Disney World, located in Orlando, Florida, opened its doors in 1971. It featured Cinderella Castle,
fifteen attractions, and two resort hotels when it initially opened. Some similarities between the two
are that they allow you to participate in the Disney College Program, both are Walt Disney s dreams
coming to life, the entertainment of the guests, and pin trading. In contrast, the two parks have
different amounts and varieties of parks, hotels, restaurants, fastpasses, and entertainment. When
Disneyland opened, it rested on an 85 acre property and only had about eighteen attractions. However,
some of the rides featured on opening day are the most iconic ones still running in both locations. On
the first day they opened the doors, thousands of people began rushing into the parks to see Walt
Disney s dreams become a reality. Upon walking in, guests were overwhelmed with all the magic
come to life. Sleeping Beauty Castle towers over the entrance of the park at seventy feet high;
however it does seem to be bigger due to the architecture they used. They used bigger blocks on the
bottom and as the builders got higher and higher, smaller bricks were used. Here one will find shops
carrying merchandise like shirts, candy, backpacks, purses, stuffed animals, and the iconic
Mickey/Minnie Mouse ears. Both sites feature exquisite architecture when it pertains to the way, the
castles were built to appear bigger. In comparison of both sites, Main Street is the road that starts at
the beginning of the park and stretches to the castle. Disneyland is divided up into four different
themes, a few of them being Fantasyland, Adventureland, and Tomorrowland. Each section has rides
that go along with the theme. For example, Tomorrowland is home

Theory Of Evaluator s Practice
Theory in Evaluator s Practice
Evaluation theory is a broad term, there are many different theories and models to follow in an
evaluation. An evaluator can pick any when doing an evaluation, however each as a ground
framework they start with. That starting theory can show up when they first begin an evaluation.
However the evaluation determines the theory used to best address the problem or program being
evaluated. I interviewed an evaluator, Person A, who explained that every evaluation and assessment
is unique, so her approach was holistic to try to see every necessary variable and she used mix and
match theories she knew to best address the current issues, sometimes changing models when
necessary. For the start of planning an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She uses her training in education to examine data from assessments to identify weak spot in services
and programs to create evaluation in improving these. She has learned how evaluation data can be
applied and the importance of applying it to make improvements and identifying weak spots in
services or programs. While she has experience in doing many types of evaluations like process,
outcomes and impact, she prefers to do process and impact evaluations to create change or
improvements and track their progress.
One example of a process evaluation she does is to find out student satisfaction of services and to
address any inefficiencies. Last year a survey was emailed to students who used the service at the end
of the year. Some strengths of this evaluation was their data collection and survey method were more
efficient after upgrading from paper to electronic resources. With an emailed survey they got a higher
response rate than using paper surveys. However the response rate was still low since the survey was
sent out once at the end of the year. Person A wanted a higher response rate, so she implemented a
change by sending out the survey to students shortly after they used the service so she will
continuously collect data and be able to analyze it at the end of each semester. More students have
replied since the survey was sent out right after their use instead of asking them about

What Is Affirmative Defense
1. The defendant(s) have various options. They can contest the lawsuit, negotiate a settlement with the
plaintiff, or do nothing at all. If they defendants challenge the lawsuit, they can do son on two bases.
They can either contest the facts of the case or challenge the action on some legal basis. 2. If the
defendants choose to contest the action, they must act within certain time limitations. If the case is
filed in state court, the time limit is fixed by state law. In federal court, under Rule 12, the time in
which to respond is normally 21 days unless the defendant waived service under Rule 4. If service was
waived, the defendant has 60 days after the request for waiver was sent. In most cases, the time in
which to respond can be extended ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An affirmative defense is a fact or circumstance that defeats the plaintiff s claim, even if the plaintiff
can prove every contention alleged in the complaint. The affirmative defenses must be alleged in the
answer or they are generally deemed waived. Whether a matter is an affirmative defense is a question
of substantive law. Some matters, such as an expiration of the statute of limitations, operate as
affirmative defenses in all kinds of cases. 5. It follows the same general format as the complaint. It
contains a caption, body or allegations, prayer or wherefore clause, and signature. In some
jurisdictions, it is prepared on pleading paper. 6. After the answer is prepared, it must be served on the
plaintiff or the plaintiff s attorney, and it must be filed in court. The procedures followed for
accomplishing service and filing depend on whether the answer is subject to electronic filing. If an
answer is not filed electronically, then prior to filing the answer with the court the following is done:
1. A copy of the answer is served on plaintiff s attorney, and 2. A copy of the answer is served on the
attorney for any other codefendant who has previously responded to the complaint.  An answer can
be served personally, by first class mail, or by fax

Julian s Trial
What Happened: Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn) is accused of killing Carlos Rivera because her prints are
on Julian s murder weapon, A.K.A. the dagger Helena used to murder Alexis mother (6/17). Julian
(William Devry) wants her to stand trial, promising to get her off (6/20). Alexis teams up with the
PCPD and wears a wire, hoping to coax a confession out of him in the homicides of Duke Lavery,
Rivera and a court witness (7/6). Julian finds the wire, takes her to the docks and nearly slits her throat
before Sonny rescues her and she s able to stab him (7/8). As a result of working in Julian s favor
while she was Carlos lawyer, Alexis is temporarily disbarred (8/17). Leading up to being a star witness

(Lexi Ainsworth) cheats on Aaron and has sex with Parker (Ashley Jones) when she reveals she may
be getting a divorce (7/20). Sonny sees Kristina kissing Parker (7/22) and they have a heart to heart
about her sexual orientation (7/26).When Alexis confronts and reminds Parker that she has no long
term intentions with Kristina (7/26), she sends a Dear John letter (7/28). Kristina blames Alexis for
Parker s change of mind and throws Julian in her face (8/12). Parker tells Kristina she s going back to

My Commentary: The downward spiral of JuLexis was exciting, entertaining and fascinating, and
anytime Grahn is given sordid material it s a good day because she slays it, but it was also another
example of detrimental short term writing. Julian was written into a such a hole, that it would be

Plutarch s Life Of The Heroes
Plutarch was a son of the philosopher named Aristobulus. He was born in 46 AD in Chaeronea,
Boeotia; and he died in 120 AD. Plutarch was also known as a historian, essayist and biographer who
had left a huge literary heritage for humanity. By traveling abroad to other countries such as Egypt,
Greece..., Plutarch assembled lots of information about the heroes of the Roman and Greece
mythology. After that, he used that information to write about lives of heroes. He gathered all
fascinating biographies in his massive books: Plutarch Greek Lives , Plutarch Roman Lives and The
Parallel Lives of Plutarch . Those books bring a reputation to Plutarch and he became a famous
biographer at that time. In his books, he wrote the lives of the heroes in order of time to show his
respects to those people of both countries. The short biographies in his books are about childhood,
achievements and deaths of the heroes. Besides that, he also added some interesting stories and
lessons in those biographies to educate his readers. His books were translated into many different
languages and they have great influences to modern historians and modern biographers. After reading
the book Greek Lives of Plutarch, I was impressed by the biography about Lycurgus. Lycurgus was
written as the father of Sparta. He was legislator who wrote many constitutions to build up and
maintain the strength and power of Sparta during 500 years. There are some differences between the
biography of Lycurgus and

Genre Analysis Of Baseball
The game of baseball has been around for approximately 150 years and throughout its history there
have been different genres used to discuss or write about the sport. The two genres are a blog post and
a news article about win loss projections for teams. Each genre will look at the sport and write about
the projections in a different way because they have different authors, audiences, and purposes. The
two different genres will also differ in the style and context because they have different reasons and
goals for their writings. The blog post will attempt to prove how the preseason predictions made by
the news article are unreliable. On the other hand, the news article will attempt to show how the
predictions are still trustworthy. The genres ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Following genre conventions, the use of NJ math whiz is an exciting and attention seeking way to say
a math professor (Casey). Casey uses this phrase in order to entice readers to click on his article. The
first sentence also draws readers in as it tells readers that Yankee and Red Sox fans won t be happy to
hear what the math professor predicted for their teams (Casey). Then, he describes the background
behind the article that a math professor at the New Jersey Institute of Technology uses mathematical
formulas before every season to estimate the records of the MLB teams. The professor, Bruce Bukiet,
uses models that he developed in the 1980s and these formulas usually rank in the top 15% of
preseason predictions when compared to sports writers (Casey). Last year, Casey explains that the
professor successfully projected four of the six division winners to make the playoffs. However, even
the mathematical models cannot foresee the randomness that is included in the game of baseball. The
author s purpose for writing about the professors preseason predictions is to share his interests in
statistics through his journalism. The author s tone in the article comes from the fact that it seems
Casey is fascinated with not only baseball but also with the professors

The Sign Of The Four, And The Red Badge Of Courage, By...
Great Expectations , The Sign of the Four , and The Red Badge of Courage are books written with
literary elements as building block for storytelling. Each first chapter uses character development,
setting description, and many types of conflict to interest the reader. Even though all of the stories
contain these elements, some are used more than others. Great Expectations and The Red Badge of
Courage focus on the setting and character description more than The Sign of The Four where the
element on conflict is heavily used. In the first chapter of Great Expectations the reader is introduced
to Pip who is looking at the tombstones of his birth family that he never knew in the graveyard of a
church on top of a hill. His mother, father, and five infant babies were all buried together as told in the
story (Dickens,2016). Charles Dickens chose to implement the setting of the story while also
introducing some of the characters. The story uses direct characterization when a man appears to
threaten Pip. The man is described as beaten up with torn shoes and wet clothes and a knife that he
uses to scare Pip which leads to conflict (Dickens,2016). The type of conflict that occurs is classified
as man versus man. Dickens uses conflict to describe what Pip looks like when the man steals a piece
of bread from Pip because he is hungry and then threatens to cut Pips cheek off and eat it. He then
describes himself in first person that he does not have much fat on his body (Dickens,2016). Two
more characters are introduced when the man asks Pip who he lives with since his parents are dead.
Pip responds and says that he lives with his sister and the man she is married to who happens to be a
blacksmith (Dickens,2016). When the man put the knife to Pips throat and told him to fetch him a file,
it motivated Pip because his life depended on it (Dickens,2016). His behavior towards the conflict is
that he obeys what the man has told him to do and agrees to his terms (Dickens,2016). Arthur Doyle s
book The Sign of The Four it is shown that conflict and character development are heavily focused on
when telling the story. The reader is first introduced to a main character who witnesses a man named
Sherlock Holmes

Kodak es nuevo en el mercado de maquinas digitales, lo que constituye una nueva presión.
El comprador tiene la posibilidad de acceder a cámaras sin rollos y a su vez tiene un aumento en la

Cartel Split Upends Potash Industry
The July 31, 2013, Globe Mail article, Cartel Split Upends Potash Industry, stated that Canadian firms
needed to rethink their future strategy in light of the recent news that Russian producer Uralkali was
exiting the BPC cartel (Vandenbosch Jethani, 2014). This news came shortly after Canadian firm
Agrium Inc. had announced their plan to expand annual potash capacity by up to 40 percent at their
Vanscoy mine. Uralkali s announcement sent ripples throughout the potash industry. Stock prices and
profits fell as potash prices dropped by up to 25 percent. Adding to this new market instability is new
rival competitor. Agrium Inc. is now faced with many questions when considering their future:
 Should they continue expansion at the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Their mine and production facility at Vanscoy has a current production capacity of over two million
tons annually. Expansion projections of 750,000 tons would increase production levels by up to 40
percent.
There are two main threats taking place in the industry environment. New rival BHP s Jansen mine in
Saskatchewan is one of the largest and highest cost greenfield mines under development. The Jansen
mine development would place BPH as one of the top five potash producers worldwide. Current
demand and pricing strategy along with other factors indicate that it is unlikely that the Jansen mine
will operate at full capacity of 8 million tons. With the exit of Uralkali from the BCP cartel; the price
over volume strategy that has been in place for the global export market has ended, causing
uncertainty in the potash market.
Agrium s weakness in the market is their current annual production capacity of two million tons. Their
smaller production capacity limits their ability to achieve greater market penetration. Demand for
potash continues to increase with population growth and the need for more agricultural output to meet
long term food demands. The increased production from the expansion of their Vanscoy mine will
allow them the ability to penetrate the market more deeply and keep up with increased demand.
Increased production would also spread a larger share of their

The Characters Of Calpurnia As A Mockingbird
What does it take to be considered a mother? Does it take courage? Strength? Love? Or are you only a
mother if you give birth to a child or officially adopt a child? Being there for someone emotionally,
mentally, and physically are the characteristics of a good mother. A woman or even a man can take the
role of being a protector and guardian of someone who was not necessarily born into or chosen for
their family. Calpurnia does an excellent job of taking the role as Jem and Scout s motherly figure.
She has rules and shows the kids discipline, teaches them life lessons and supports and comforts them
as they grow up. Calpurnia is Jem and Scout s African American cook who has been with their family
since before their mother died. Scout said that She had been with us ever since Jem was born, and I
had felt her tyrannical presence as long as I could remember. Our mother died when I was two, so I
never felt her absence (6). Calpurnia displays motherly actions by disciplining Jem and Scout just like
they were her own kids. Her hand was as wide as a bed slat and twice as hard (6) explained Scout.
This quote signifies that Scout knows how her hand feels and she was getting a physical punishment.
Calpurnia tends to discipline Scout more than Jem because Scout acts out and is the worst behaved

E. E Cummings Essay
Edward Estlin Cummings was an unbelievable great American poet one of the most well versed
scholar in the subject of poetry. E. E. Cummings was excessively popular, especially among younger
readers of his work. He was known for being reckless in thought when it came to his poetry, it was
also said that he experimented radically with his form of spelling, syntax, punctuation, and miss
spelling. More than half of his poems turn to the subjects of sex, love, and war, with such facile
language leaving behind the traditions that most poets followed. E. E. Cummings was born on October
14, 1894 to Edward Cummings and Rebecca Haswell Clarke, who were Unitarian. His father was a
professor at Harvard University and was later the nationally known minister of Old South Church in
Boston, Massachusetts. His mother loved to spend time with Cummings and his sister Elizabeth. His
mother and father knew about the creative gifts Edward had with poetry, from an early age he would
write a poem daily from the ages of eight through twenty two. With writing a poem everyday Edward
learned many different self taught form of ways to write poems. At the age of twenty one he had

Why Is Censorship Good For Children
Do you wonder why sometimes you watch Tv and a curse word has been said but instead of hearing
the word you hear a *beep*. That is called Censorship, society should be allowed to limit children
access to materials not suitable to their age. (Censorship is the way to go). It shields children from
corrupt ideas, Foul language, and images. Censorship also can protect our nation. Censorship most
importantly protects our children and it helps aid children from corrupt ideas. Girls think that they don

Lost in the Sky at Grandpa s Cabin Essay
Lost in the Sky at Grandpa s Cabin
My grandfather carries on entire conversations while he salts his food. He salts indiscriminately: His
corn, his pasta, his fish, even his fruit. He never samples his food before reaching for the shaker: He
knows it has yet to be salted to his liking.
The one thing my grandfather doesn t salt is his beer. If there s one taste my grandfather likes more
than salt, it s the wheaty, fizzy flavor of Labatt s Blue. It comes in cans at fifty cents a pop. There is a
full sized refrigerator rigged up in the basement of my grandparents summer cottage to accommodate
my grandfather s beer. He buys it in boxes of thirty. They never last long.

Next door resides a variety of relatives, whose precise relations to me are sometimes unclear: they are
always characterized by a great or a second or a once removed. Once when I was thirteen, a family
came to visit who were relatives of my relatives, a family that included a fine looking young male
specimen with a firm and nicely bronzed chest. Before deciding if it was acceptable to flirt with him, I
had to sit down and draw out a family tree to figure out whether he was blood related. He wasn t.
The drinking that transpires next door makes the habits of my grandparents look like child s play.
They pass over the beer and wine and head straight for the hard stuff. My grandma s sister, my great
aunt, starts her day off with a scotch and soda. My cousins are mixing margaritas before they ve
finished digesting lunch. By the time cocktail hour rolls around, they re all hammered. Sunset only
invites more madness. If my great aunt s middle aged sons aren t setting off $2000 worth of illegal
fireworks down at the beach, they re either rigging raccoon traps or offering driving lessons in my
great aunt s red Chrysler convertible to any number of prepubescent cousins.
The alcohol creates diversion but it also creates tensions. When my grandparents get tipsy, they start
snapping and ordering people around. I can see the wine begin to take effect on my grandma: the
corners of her mouth pull down into a sour pout. Sometimes she and my grandpa say things that

The Role Of Chivalry In Medieval Europe
In Medieval Europe, in order for a knight to be considered honorable, he had to conduct himself by
the code of chivalry. The Knights Code of Chivalry was part of the culture of the Middle Ages and
was understood by all. Chivalry was a system of ethical ideals developed among the knights of
medieval Europe. Arising out of feudalism, it combined military virtues with those of Christianity, as
characterized by the Arthurian legend in England and the chansons de geste of medieval France. The
word chivalry is derived from the French chevalier, meaning horseman or knight (Chivalry. (n.d.).

Deoxygenated Blood Differences
The vena cava is divided into two, they are the inferior and superior vena cava. De oxygenated blood
travels through superior vena cava and inferior vena cava (or the coronial sinus). These are the large
vein that return deoxygenated blood back from the upper and lower part of the body to heart. The
deoxygenated blood means that the blood has very low oxygen because the tissues in the body have
used up the oxygen in the blood making the blood to turn darker instead of bright red.
The superior vena cava receives deoxygenated blood from the neck, upper limb and the head, while
the inferior vena cava receives blood from the lower torso and the legs. The blood is then send to the
heart.

The aorta is divided into 4, they are:
Ascending aorta rises up from the heart. The coronary arteries branches out from ascending aorta to

Skeletal Muscle Myogenesis
Skeletal muscles are highly complex and heterogeneous tissues, serving a multitude of functions in
different organisms. The process of generating muscle myogenesis can be divided into several distinct
phases [40]. Ubiquitin mediated protein degradation is one of the main mechanisms for controlling
proteolysis, which is crucial for muscle development and maintenance. Recently notch signaling has
appeared as a key player in skeletal muscle development and regeneration. Simply stated, Notch
signaling inhibits differentiation. Accordingly, fine tuning the pathway is essential for proper muscle
homeostasis.Less is known regarding the functions of ASB proteins in muscle development, although

Studies identified desmin as a new ASB2β target for proteasomal degradation in cardiomyocytes
suggesting accumulation of desmin could contribute to UPS impairment in HCM mice and patients.
Desmin is a muscle specific, type III intermediate filament that integrates the sarcolemma, Z disk, and
nuclear membrane in sarcomeres and regulates sarcomere architecture[43]. Recently ASB2 was found
to be assisting in the ubiquitination of Notch targets such as E2A and Janus kinase 2 by forming a non
canonical E3 ligase complex[44]. Jak2 is likely bound with ASB2, but bound with E2A via F BOX
containing protein, Skp2, also known to associate with Skp1 and Cul1. Moreover, ASB2 was activated
by Notch signaling showing its involvement as regulator of Notch signaling. In multicellular
organisms, Notch signaling pathway is a highly conserved signaling pathway. In spite of the fact that
ASB2 is involved in degrading key proteins involved in cell proliferation and differentiation, more
studies are required to understand the variations occurring in the ASB2 mediated ubiquitylation

discovering Juliet s seemingly dead body and Tony being killed by revealing his whereabouts to Chino

characters share the personality trait of passion, as, upon learning of the apparent deaths of their

The Human Brain Needs Relationship Essay
Today s adolescents I fear will lose sight of human connection and how that human connection creates
the ability to have empathy for others. After conducting my interviews and based on how I see young
people interact what I know is the human brain needs connection to develop empathy. Our brains are
wired to connect with others via mirror neurons and if most communication and socializing happen
through texting and social media our children are at a great risk to lose that ability to connect
physically and emotionally with others. I look forward to diving into this more in my research paper
that I will present in week 5. My first interview was done with my son, DJ. He is in the 8th grade and
comes from a split family. His father and I separated when he was only three years old and this
separation of family was very difficult for DJ, and he still shows signs to this day of broken
attachment. He struggles with emotions, especially controlling his emotions. DJ was primarily raised
by his father and his father s new girlfriend due to a long legal battle that I won t get into.
DJ was raised with his full blood sister, who is 9 years older than him, and two step sisters, one who
was close to his age and another who was a bit older. He was the only boy in a world full of women
and his father wasn t much of a provider. When he was eleven years old, I was granted sole custody.

Travel And Tourism In The Philippines

Martial Law. The President claimed that lawless elements supported by a foreign power were plotting
to overthrow the lawfully elected government and that martial law was necessary to save the Republic
and reform the society (Lim). On the other hand, tourism is defined as the activities of persons
traveling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive
year for leisure business and other purposes (Cruz 1). The term travel and tourism industry has come
to mean all the private, public and voluntary sector organizations that provide services for the
traveling public and work together to promote the socio economic benefits of the industry worldwide
(Cruz 9). In this industry, companies and government conduct businesses since it became an emerging
industry in 1970s. Tourism industry is a rising trade during Marcos time since there is an increase in
the number of tourist arrivals starting from 1970 up to 1980. From 242, 811 in 1973, it increased to
1,008,158 in 1980. However, it can also be observed that there was a negative growth rate from 1981

Pros And Cons Of Conscription Compulsory Military Service
The first European Institution, indeed the first international organisation of states, to formally
recognise conscientious objection to military service was the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council
of Europe.
In September 1965 Amnesty International raised with the Council the question of conscientious
objection in relation to Article 9 (freedom of conscience, thought and religion) of the European
Convention on Human Rights. The Council asked the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public
Law and International Law, Germany, to prepare a study of the situation in the member states, as a
result of which the Consultative Assembly on 26 January 1967 adopted Resolution 337, including the
following basic principles :
Persons liable to conscription for military service who, for reasons of conscience or profound
consviction, arising from religious, ethical, moral, humanitarian, philosophical or similar motives,
refuse to perform armed service shall enjoy a personal right to be released from the obligation to
perform such service. This right shall be regarded as deriving logically from the fundamental rights of
the individual in democratic Rule of Law states which are guaranteed in Article 9 of the European
Convention on Human Rights.

state dates back to mediaeval obligations to monarchs and overlords, and then was formalised as a

Analysis Of Domestic Unrest And Jennifer Johnston s...
One of the critics who discuss Johnston s work is Laila Khan. In her essay, Domestic Unrest and
Jennifer Johnston s Fiction of the Irish Trouble, Khan focuses on how Johnston s novels do not
concentrate on the violence happening in the nation, but instead how she uses Irish domestic fictions
to explored alternative approaches to friendships and family bonds that could exist when women reject
nationalist narratives (2). Khan s essay analyzes these trends in relationship to the mothers in Johnston
s The Railway Station Man and Shadows on Our Skin. While women often are representative of
Ireland in Irish fictions, Khan notes that Johnston purposely creates mothers that refuses to act as
mouthpieces for national rhetoric in the home, choosing instead passivity or alternative kinships as
what they see as the only escape (3). An example of this from Shadows on Our Skin is the way the
Mrs. Logan has sent her eldest son Brendon off to England in hopes of keeping him safe (3).
According to Khan, the purpose of this is to keep him away from his pro Nationalist father, [and] also
out of the Irish public sphere (3). In The Railway Station Man, Helen is less interested in protesting
political involvement than she is in escaping it entirely (6). It is because of this that Helen is unlike
many mother, she does not force her son to owe her anything (9). This analysis differs from the one
that will be examined in this paper because, while the mother is an important figure, she

becoming more popular for both research and funding purposes. I was curious to see how the original
practice of prosthetics was developed and when they were first used along with how technological
advances throughout time have correlated with developmental advancements in prosthetics. I was
quite surprised after learning that the idea of prosthetic limbs was actually introduced an extremely

The science has recently started to become more advanced due to funding and research. Further,
owing to the poor healing capacity of the nervous system and an aging population contributing to

prosthetic solutions is growing. 2 I read about a meeting that was held that combined 160 different
professionals like scientists, engineers, researchers and many others all with the hope of creating
powerful and adaptive prosthetics. The meetings consisted of making the process of production and
performance more efficient. Materials scientists would kill to be able to produce a material as amazing
as biological muscle, which can retract on command, stretch by about 70% without damage, and heal
its own nicks and tears. Now, researchers say they re getting closer with a synthetic material that can

his definition, at least to me, is a chilling reminder that we are engaged in a battle.
The Bible contains numerous scriptures and accounts of spiritual warfare, too numerous for us to deny
the fact that it does exist. Now the level of our battles varies from person to person, nevertheless, a
relationship with Jesus signifies we are engaged in a battle with our adversary. There is a good and an

The Kentucky Open Records Act Of 1976
Introduction
The Commonwealth of Kentucky enacted law governing open records in 1976. The law mandates
agencies release applicable records to the public upon appropriate requests. The Louisville Metro
Police Department adopted a policy to address and comply with this law. I will review and discuss
how LMPD applies its policy in order to stay in compliance with this law. I will also evaluate any
improvements to the policy for better or more efficient application.
Summary of law
Kentucky s open records laws are covered under Kentucky Revised Statutes (KRS) 61.870 61.884.
The law was enacted as a result of the Kentucky Open Records Act of 1976. In summary, the law
requires government agencies to release records for public examination. Specifically, KRS 61.871
states The General Assembly finds and declares that the basic policy of KRS 61.870 to 61.884 is that
free and open examination of public records is in the public interest and the exceptions provided for
by KRS 61.878 or otherwise provided by law shall be strictly construed, even though such
examination may cause inconvenience or embarrassment to public officials or others. The records
include documents, photographs, recordings, and reports. The law details how government agencies
are required to respond to requests, which records are exempt, application of fees and an appeal
process for denied requests. The main source of requests comes from media sources and attorneys

Who killed Julius Caesar? Julius Caesar was a beloved dictator. The lower class was pleased with
Caesar for giving them money and bringing peace and safety to Rome. Though some people envied
his power. On March 15, 44 B.C. Caesar was found murdered at the senate house. The senate says it
was only an action of self defense, but can we really trust them? Those who were responsible for the
assassination of Julius Caesar were Brutus, Cassius and members of the senate. First, Brutus is guilty
in the assassination of Caesar. Using different sources we can determine that Brutus is guilty. In
document C, Brutus persuades Caesar to go to the senate despite the warnings that Caesar received.
Brutus must have been up to something since he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Document B shows a private letter found in the hand of Caesar that warned of the senate s plan. It
states, My lord, you must not attend the meeting at the senate today. I have heard of a great conspiracy
among the senators to take your very life. This quote shows that the senate was guilty because they
had planned to kill Caesar at their meeting. In document E many senators hated Caesar for his desired
power. In document D eyewitnesses claim the death of Caesar was only an act of self defense. It says,
The result was his death. The death of Julius Caesar, but I assure you, we were only attempting to
calm him when he decided to strike at anyone and everyone with his dagger. This is not believable
because when the senate tried to calm Caesar and he would not calm they probably decided to kill him
otherwise he would hurt people. In document C it mentions many rumors that were being heard about
the senate s plans to kill Caesar. As you can see the senate was responsible for the death of Julius

Overt Racism In Australia
Matthew Rawlings 20112410 Nationalism, Ethnicity, Race Essay
Instead of an overt racism that rejects individuals who do not fit into an existing Anglo Australian
template, contemporary racism relies on fear politics permeating heightened popular nationalism.
Discuss.
As we enter the 21st century, complex issues such as terrorism, immigration, multiculturalism, and
social cohesion have brought about a significant amount controversy and an abundance of emotive
rhetoric within Australian society. The fact that these issues have been politicised around a number of
elections has bought these matters to the forefront of public discussion, but rather than appealing to
the publics sense of compassion, the issues have been approached ... Show more content on

The growing number of displaced persons arising out of the Syrian Civil War in 2011 has become a
significant humanitarian crisis on a global scale, with several countries granting asylum to a number
of those effected. On the 9th of September 2015, the Australian Government announced that it will
make an extra 12,000 humanitarian places available in response to the conflicts in Syria and Iraq,
granting them a permanent visa. Australia has been largely criticised by the international community
regarding its special humanitarian stream identifying those most appropriate for resettlement, but
necessarily the most vulnerable people. The approach taken by the Australian Government, alongside
the continued sharing of news articles portraying migrants as rapists is demonstrative of this
heightened sense of popular nationalism identified in contemporary society, stemming from fear
tactics, as well as the an increased the sharing of information and opinion via new

Stem Cells And Its Effects On Development During The First...
Stem Cells: Embryonic stem cells are bodily cells that are in development during the first stages of
life. These are the cells that will go on to make all of the body tissues of the offspring, like neurons,
blood and skin cells. (Farrell et al.). With these human cells scientists can repair damaged tissue of
diseased patients as well as study the diseases they have. Only recently have stem cells been available
to collect and study. Currently, there are only a few methods of collection, such as retrieving them
from in vitro fertilization: Aborted fetuses. However, these methods do not supply a constant source of
the stem cells, and currently there are too few cultures of cells in labs to attempt any real medical
advancement with. So, if ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Experiments show that stem cells could be the answer to solving many medical problems that humans
suffer from. Stem cells injected into damaged tissue repaired the cells there by dividing until all of the
old cells were replaced. However, 20% of test animals injected with stem cells developed untreatable
brain tumors (Clouthier). Stem cells can divide endlessly and each time one divides, the daughter cells
have a chance of being another stem cell, or a specialized cell for a specific function. Stem cells are
unspecialized, meaning they have no specific purpose other than to repair damaged cells by replacing
them. Adult stem cells are released in adults when tissue needs to be replaced, but stem cells from the
blastocyst, the five day old group of cells of an unrecognizable fetus, are where researchers are
interested most. In 1953, the precursor of what scientists know as stem cells was found by Leroy
Stevens, who was studying cancer with mice. In their tumors he found a mix of specialized and
unspecialized cells. In 1981, Martin Evans and Gail Martin derived stem cells from the embryos of
mice. This was the first time ever in history that any form of stem cell was isolated. Then in 1986,
researchers found that they could revert connective tissue collected from mice back into mytoblasts,
what generates

Marketing to Baby Boomers Essays
Consisting of 77.2 million people, baby boomers people born between 1946 and 1964 represent a
prized, yet often misunderstood, demographic for online marketers. In fact, they represent the largest
group within the U.S. Internet population at 56.7 million users, a full 29.4 percent of all Internet users.
So why is there such confusion about how to effectively market to them? A recent report from the
online market research firm eMarketer, Boomers Online: Attitude Is Everything, addresses this issue.
The first hurdle for online marketers targeting boomers is the disparity in age that can exist within the
group. This has led many marketers to divide the group into two distinct segments: older boomers
(those born between 1946 and 1954) and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Individuals 65 and older still make up less than 10 percent of the active Internet universe. However,
their numbers are on the rise. In the last five years, the number of seniors actively using the Internet
has increased by more than 55 percent, from 11.3 million active users in November 2004 to 17.5
million in November 2009. Among people 65+, the growth of women online in the last five years has
outpaced the growth of men by 6 percentage points.
The largest percentage increase in Internet use since 2005 has been in the 70 to 75 age group,
according to the Pew Internet and American Life Project. The survey found that 45 percent of that age
bracket is online, compared with 26 percent in 2005. Researching health information is the third most
popular online activity with the most senior age group, after email and online search.
What s more, many seniors find social networking exciting and enjoy finding online community. They
re creating their own blogs and, more often, connecting with family and friends by joining Facebook,
LinkedIn, and Twitter.
Social media are giving seniors a voice, and for a generation that has sometimes felt isolated and
overlooked, that s no small feat, said Sarah Hoit, chief executive of My Way Village, which designs
online social networks for older adults.
The No. 1 online destination for people over 65 in November 2009 was

Environmental Factors Of Intelligence And The Raven s...
A person s intelligence is their ability to to gain knowledge and skills in which they are able to use in
their lives. IQ can be used alternatively with intelligence when talking about a person s intelligence.
IQ is an abbreviation for the German term intelligent quotient. One s IQ is usually examined using IQ
scores derived from different test taken. The Raven s Coloured Progressive Matrices uses models
which are presented in the form of matrices. IQ exams are generally reliable enough because most
people ages ten and older have the same IQ scores throughout life. A person s intelligence involves the
ability to reason, solve problems, plan, and etc (Archita et al, 2016). Just like any other human trait,
one s intelligence varies from person to person (Archita et al, 2016). It has been hard to identify the
particular genetic and environmental factors that determine IQ, but several environmental aspects have
been proven to correlate with a person s IQ, such as education (Oommen, 2014). There are various
environmental factors on one s intelligence. Various environmental factors such as parent s education,
place of residence, and diseases and disorders have a great impact on a person s intelligence.
Perspective: Place of residence affects intelligence: Several studies have shown how several places of
residence has a great impact on one s intelligence. Medical students from the Pune department of
medicine support this because in a cross sectional

Theme Of Satire In Lazarillo De Tormes
Lazarillo de Tormes is a famous work of Spanish literature published anonymously. The novel is
written in the first person. Lazarillo de Tormes is known as a picaresque novel in that the novel is
written about a character of the lower class instead of a hero or upper class character. The novel has
several themes, but the theme that is constant throughout the novel is appearance versus reality. The
author utilizes several rhetorical devices in the novel which add emphasis to the story. The novel,
which was banned by the Spanish Crown during the time of the Spanish inquisition, is the story of the
birth and life Lazarillo de Tormes as he serves various masters and his struggle for survival. His
struggles are real. Many of the rhetorical devices serve to add humor to the novel as well. The author
uses satire to support the theme of appearance versus reality. The definition of satire is an attempt to
ridicule, mock, or criticize something or someone with humorous content. Satire is a rhetorical device
that is used throughout the novel. The author uses humor in the wake of misfortune. This is evident in
the chapter where Lazarillo serves his first master, a blind man. He treated Lazarillo horribly and also
starved him. Lazarillo learns many deceitful things from his master which will serve him well
throughout his life. Lazarillo s goal was to get away from the blind man. An example of satire is the
quote, What! You smelled the sausage and you couldn t smell the post? Ole ? Ole ? I jeered (Albert,
Michael 17). Lazarillo was making fun of the blind man for being able to smell the difference in the
sausage and rotten turnips, but he did not smell the post that Lazarillo purposefully guided him into.
Lazarillo was set on getting away from his first master and this is the clever way that Lazarillo gets
away. He leaves without knowing the condition of his first master. In the end, Lazarillo did manage to
outwit the blind man. The author s portrayal of the clergy can be considered satire as well. The clergy
is portrayed very negatively in the novel. The clergy is not noble, honest or Christ like which is what
people normally equate with a man that holds such a position. According to T. Anthony Perry, there is

  • 2. Comparison Of The Olympia And Yasumasa Morimura s Futago Nude figures have been featured in art works since around 30 to 25,000 B.C. And throughout the history of art, we can see a lot of artists being inspired and influenced by great talents before them, in one way or another they would carry the style or ideas of those previous artists into their own art and create new masterpieces. One particular example is Édouard Manet s Olympia from the Realism period, and Yasumasa Morimura s Futago. The two paintings share great similarities in their composition, but the content and purpose of the paintings, and style wise the two pieces are very different. Édouard Manet, a French Realism painter, who set the roots for Modernism, painted Olympia with oil on canvas. In Manet s Olympia we could see a lot of inspiration and influence from Titian s Venus of Urbino from the Venetian Renaissance period. In the foreground of Olympia, there is a nude woman wearing nothing but a bracelet, necklace, a pair of earrings and slippers. The woman is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... And it is for that reason the painting received so much criticism. It was too real. The nude woman in the painting was not an idealized mystical subject like the woman in Titian s Venus of Urbino anymore, but it was based on a real woman, Victorine Meurent. The reality of the piece brought all the harsh criticism onto itself, because it raised a lot of issues regarding prostitution and women s place and roles in the French society. Another reason the painting shocked the crowd other than the realness of it is its style, how it was painted. Olympia was painted roughly with clear brushstrokes, poor details (everything was also very flat), and stark value ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. The Collective History Of Scotland Both Robert Burns and William Wordsworth use the past in their poetry to inspire readers to change their future but the two poets go about it in very different ways. Burns focuses on the collective history of Scotland, drawing on its folk songs, national heroes and culture to create revolutionary sentiment in his readers. Wordsworth sits at almost the other end of the spectrum he focuses in on the past of individuals and how their futures could be changed through their mind sets. Unlike Wordsworth, who forges a connection with nature through quiet contemplation and observation of the natural world, Burns connection with nature is mediated through his experiences working on farms. This means that both authors approach nature and the Earth in very different ways. Wordsworth calls upon the readers to leave the cities they inhabit and to go out into the country, in order to meditate on the emotions and experiences brought about by truly looking at the landscape. While this is one way to expand one s mind it was not achievable by most of the urban working class of the time. Wordsworth, as a member of the upper classes, had more leisure time to go out into the countryside and there to do but experience the scenery. The Urban working class of this era would not have had the free time to do so. They were busy working long hours doing hard physical labour almost every day. To take this time off would have cost them in missed hours they could have been working and money they could ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Two Differences Of Disneyland And Walt Disney World Although Disneyland and Walt Disney World (WDW) are Walt Disney s ideas being portrayed, the two parks have quite a few differences along with a vast amount of similarities. For example, Disney World is comprised of four parks, whereas Disneyland is only made up of two. Disneyland cut the ceremonial ribbon in 1955 and is located in Anaheim, California. It included features such as Sleeping Beauty Castle, eighteen attractions, one resort hotel, and a monorail system. On the other hand, Walt Disney World, located in Orlando, Florida, opened its doors in 1971. It featured Cinderella Castle, fifteen attractions, and two resort hotels when it initially opened. Some similarities between the two are that they allow you to participate in the Disney College Program, both are Walt Disney s dreams coming to life, the entertainment of the guests, and pin trading. In contrast, the two parks have different amounts and varieties of parks, hotels, restaurants, fastpasses, and entertainment. When Disneyland opened, it rested on an 85 acre property and only had about eighteen attractions. However, some of the rides featured on opening day are the most iconic ones still running in both locations. On the first day they opened the doors, thousands of people began rushing into the parks to see Walt Disney s dreams become a reality. Upon walking in, guests were overwhelmed with all the magic come to life. Sleeping Beauty Castle towers over the entrance of the park at seventy feet high; however it does seem to be bigger due to the architecture they used. They used bigger blocks on the bottom and as the builders got higher and higher, smaller bricks were used. Here one will find shops carrying merchandise like shirts, candy, backpacks, purses, stuffed animals, and the iconic Mickey/Minnie Mouse ears. Both sites feature exquisite architecture when it pertains to the way, the castles were built to appear bigger. In comparison of both sites, Main Street is the road that starts at the beginning of the park and stretches to the castle. Disneyland is divided up into four different themes, a few of them being Fantasyland, Adventureland, and Tomorrowland. Each section has rides that go along with the theme. An evaluator can pick any when doing an evaluation, however each as a ground framework they start with. That starting theory can show up when they first begin an evaluation. However the evaluation determines the theory used to best address the problem or program being evaluated. Plutarch was also known as a historian, essayist and biographer who had left a huge literary heritage for humanity. By traveling abroad to other countries such as Egypt, Greece..., Plutarch assembled lots of information about the heroes of the Roman and Greece mythology. After that, he used that information to write about lives of heroes. He gathered all fascinating biographies in his massive books: Plutarch Greek Lives , Plutarch Roman Lives and The Parallel Lives of Plutarch . Those books bring a reputation to Plutarch and he became a famous biographer at that time. In his books, he wrote the lives of the heroes in order of time to show his respects to those people of both countries. The short biographies in his books are about childhood, achievements and deaths of the heroes. Besides that, he also added some interesting stories and lessons in those biographies to educate his readers. His books were translated into many different languages and they have great influences to modern historians and modern biographers. • 15. The Sign Of The Four, And The Red Badge Of Courage, By... Great Expectations , The Sign of the Four , and The Red Badge of Courage are books written with literary elements as building block for storytelling. Each first chapter uses character development, setting description, and many types of conflict to interest the reader. Even though all of the stories contain these elements, some are used more than others. Great Expectations and The Red Badge of Courage focus on the setting and character description more than The Sign of The Four where the element on conflict is heavily used. In the first chapter of Great Expectations the reader is introduced to Pip who is looking at the tombstones of his birth family that he never knew in the graveyard of a church on top of a hill. His mother, father, and five infant babies were all buried together as told in the story (Dickens,2016). Charles Dickens chose to implement the setting of the story while also introducing some of the characters. The story uses direct characterization when a man appears to threaten Pip. The man is described as beaten up with torn shoes and wet clothes and a knife that he uses to scare Pip which leads to conflict (Dickens,2016). The type of conflict that occurs is classified as man versus man. Dickens uses conflict to describe what Pip looks like when the man steals a piece of bread from Pip because he is hungry and then threatens to cut Pips cheek off and eat it. He then describes himself in first person that he does not have much fat on his body (Dickens,2016). Two more characters are introduced when the man asks Pip who he lives with since his parents are dead. Pip responds and says that he lives with his sister and the man she is married to who happens to be a blacksmith (Dickens,2016). When the man put the knife to Pips throat and told him to fetch him a file, it motivated Pip because his life depended on it (Dickens,2016). His behavior towards the conflict is that he obeys what the man has told him to do and agrees to his terms (Dickens,2016). Arthur Doyle s book The Sign of The Four it is shown that conflict and character development are heavily focused on when telling the story. Expansion projections of 750,000 tons would increase production levels by up to 40 percent. There are two main threats taking place in the industry environment. New rival BHP s Jansen mine in Saskatchewan is one of the largest and highest cost greenfield mines under development. The Jansen mine development would place BPH as one of the top five potash producers worldwide. Current demand and pricing strategy along with other factors indicate that it is unlikely that the Jansen mine will operate at full capacity of 8 million tons. Or are you only a mother if you give birth to a child or officially adopt a child? Being there for someone emotionally, mentally, and physically are the characteristics of a good mother. A woman or even a man can take the role of being a protector and guardian of someone who was not necessarily born into or chosen for their family. Calpurnia does an excellent job of taking the role as Jem and Scout s motherly figure. She has rules and shows the kids discipline, teaches them life lessons and supports and comforts them as they grow up. Calpurnia is Jem and Scout s African American cook who has been with their family since before their mother died. Scout said that She had been with us ever since Jem was born, and I had felt her tyrannical presence as long as I could remember. Our mother died when I was two, so I never felt her absence (6). Calpurnia displays motherly actions by disciplining Jem and Scout just like they were her own kids. Her hand was as wide as a bed slat and twice as hard (6) explained Scout. This quote signifies that Scout knows how her hand feels and she was getting a physical punishment. Calpurnia tends to discipline Scout more than Jem because Scout acts out and is the worst behaved child of the siblings. She was ordering me out of the kitchen, asking me why I couldn t behave as well as Jem when she knew he was older, and calling me home when I wasn t ready to come (6) Scout states. Scout and Calpurnia s relationship is just like a mother and daughter relationship because they fight and make up and Calpurnia disciplines Scout and Scout gets mad at her. Recently ASB2 was found to be assisting in the ubiquitination of Notch targets such as E2A and Janus kinase 2 by forming a non canonical E3 ligase complex[44]. Jak2 is likely bound with ASB2, but bound with E2A via F BOX containing protein, Skp2, also known to associate with Skp1 and Cul1. Moreover, ASB2 was activated by Notch signaling showing its involvement as regulator of Notch signaling. In multicellular organisms, Notch signaling pathway is a highly conserved signaling pathway. Both characters must decide between their love for their girlfriends and their loyalty to their groups, and both find themselves in fatal situations because of this inner conflict, Romeo committing suicide after discovering Juliet s seemingly dead body and Tony being killed by revealing his whereabouts to Chino in his emotional state after hearing the false news of Maria s death. This also reveals that the two characters share the personality trait of passion, as, upon learning of the apparent deaths of their lovers, they abandon all regard for personal safety and make the decision that they would rather die than live without them. Similarly, Juliet and Maria are analogous to each other for many of the same reasons: both are members of one feuding group who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Though the situations of Romeo and Juliet and Tony and Maria have slightly different results (Romeo and Juliet both committing suicide and Tony being killed while Maria survives), the repercussions of their tragic romances are much the same. When I think of vacations, I think of packing, the flight or drive, and relaxation. Not only is it very exciting to go on a vacation, but you get closer to the people that go with you. After conducting my interviews and based on how I see young people interact what I know is the human brain needs connection to develop empathy. Our brains are wired to connect with others via mirror neurons and if most communication and socializing happen through texting and social media our children are at a great risk to lose that ability to connect physically and emotionally with others. I look forward to diving into this more in my research paper that I will present in week 5. My first interview was done with my son, DJ. He is in the 8th grade and comes from a split family. His father and I separated when he was only three years old and this separation of family was very difficult for DJ, and he still shows signs to this day of broken attachment. He struggles with emotions, especially controlling his emotions. DJ was primarily raised by his father and his father s new girlfriend due to a long legal battle that I won t get into. In her essay, Domestic Unrest and Jennifer Johnston s Fiction of the Irish Trouble, Khan focuses on how Johnston s novels do not concentrate on the violence happening in the nation, but instead how she uses Irish domestic fictions to explored alternative approaches to friendships and family bonds that could exist when women reject nationalist narratives (2). Khan s essay analyzes these trends in relationship to the mothers in Johnston s The Railway Station Man and Shadows on Our Skin. While women often are representative of Ireland in Irish fictions, Khan notes that Johnston purposely creates mothers that refuses to act as mouthpieces for national rhetoric in the home, choosing instead passivity or alternative kinships as what they see as the only escape (3). An example of this from Shadows on Our Skin is the way the Mrs. Logan has sent her eldest son Brendon off to England in hopes of keeping him safe (3). According to Khan, the purpose of this is to keep him away from his pro Nationalist father, [and] also out of the Irish public sphere (3). In The Railway Station Man, Helen is less interested in protesting political involvement than she is in escaping it entirely (6). It is because of this that Helen is unlike many mother, she does not force her son to owe her anything (9). With these human cells scientists can repair damaged tissue of diseased patients as well as study the diseases they have. Only recently have stem cells been available to collect and study. Currently, there are only a few methods of collection, such as retrieving them from in vitro fertilization: Aborted fetuses. Stem cells injected into damaged tissue repaired the cells there by dividing until all of the old cells were replaced. However, 20% of test animals injected with stem cells developed untreatable brain tumors (Clouthier). Stem cells can divide endlessly and each time one divides, the daughter cells have a chance of being another stem cell, or a specialized cell for a specific function. Stem cells are unspecialized, meaning they have no specific purpose other than to repair damaged cells by replacing them. Adult stem cells are released in adults when tissue needs to be replaced, but stem cells from the blastocyst, the five day old group of cells of an unrecognizable fetus, are where researchers are interested most. In 1953, the precursor of what scientists know as stem cells was found by Leroy Stevens, who was studying cancer with mice. In their tumors he found a mix of specialized and unspecialized cells. • 46. Theme Of Satire In Lazarillo De Tormes Lazarillo de Tormes is a famous work of Spanish literature published anonymously. The novel is written in the first person. Lazarillo de Tormes is known as a picaresque novel in that the novel is written about a character of the lower class instead of a hero or upper class character. The novel has several themes, but the theme that is constant throughout the novel is appearance versus reality. The author utilizes several rhetorical devices in the novel which add emphasis to the story. The novel, which was banned by the Spanish Crown during the time of the Spanish inquisition, is the story of the birth and life Lazarillo de Tormes as he serves various masters and his struggle for survival. His struggles are real. Many of the rhetorical devices serve to add humor to the novel as well. The author uses satire to support the theme of appearance versus reality. The definition of satire is an attempt to ridicule, mock, or criticize something or someone with humorous content. Satire is a rhetorical device that is used throughout the novel. The author uses humor in the wake of misfortune. This is evident in the chapter where Lazarillo serves his first master, a blind man. He treated Lazarillo horribly and also starved him. Lazarillo learns many deceitful things from his master which will serve him well throughout his life. Lazarillo s goal was to get away from the blind man. An example of satire is the quote, What! You smelled the sausage and you couldn t smell the post? Ole ? Ole ? I jeered (Albert, Michael 17). Lazarillo was making fun of the blind man for being able to smell the difference in the sausage and rotten turnips, but he did not smell the post that Lazarillo purposefully guided him into. Lazarillo was set on getting away from his first master and this is the clever way that Lazarillo gets away. He leaves without knowing the condition of his first master. In the end, Lazarillo did manage to outwit the blind man. The author s portrayal of the clergy can be considered satire as well. The clergy is portrayed very negatively in the novel. The clergy is not noble, honest or Christ like which is what people normally equate with a man that holds such a position. According to T. Anthony Perry, there is a high ...
