Symbolism In A Rose For Emily By William Faulkner
Love can distill rage into individuals when it is not mutual. In A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner,
things begin to go south as Emily Grierson encounters her biggest fear: change. Ms. Emily is viewed
as a monument and chore to her community. After her father s death, her world seems to flow
accordingly behind his passing. Meanwhile, her emotional health declines in conjunction with her
physical surroundings. Emily Grierson suffers from emotional decay due to isolation by her father,
unrequited love, and unrealistic expectations from the townspeople causing her to embrace murder.
Although Ms. Emily s father was dead, he still had mental control over her endeavors. She was left
feeling vulnerable and open to love from a male. Emily knew no love outside of her father s grasp.
Faulkner writes how after her father s death, people hardly saw her at all (sec.2 para.2). It was
understood around the community that no man was good enough for Ms. Emily, according to her
father. Faulkner expresses symbolism as he describes Emily as a slender figure in white in the
background... and her father as a spraddled silhouette in the foreground... clutching a horsewhip (sec.2
para.13). By describing her father as a silhouette , Faulkner directly foreshadows her father s role in
her current life succeeding his death. He acts as a shadow behind her, foreshadowing her long term
emotional instability. Because of his confinement, Ms. Emily was robbed of the experience of any

Activity-based costing in restaurants
Activity based costing in restaurants
1. Introduction
Interest in cost and management accounting practices in the restaurant industry is rising (Raab et al.,
2009; Annaraud et al., 2008). Pavesic (1985) has initiated research in pricing and cost accounting for
restaurants, introducing the concept of profit factor
(PF) in menu engineering (ME). Prior studies, such as the one presented in Chan and
Au (1998) investigate the implications of not incorporating overhead costs in menu item profitability
analyses in restaurants in Hong Kong. Since then, a number of researchers have examined the
application of contemporary cost and management accounting techniques, and particularly activity
based costing (ABC) in a restaurant
environment ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To this end Kaplan and Cooper (1998) suggest that service companies are ideal candidates for ABC.
One reason for this is that in the services industry a great percentage of total cost is labour cost and
processes are highly variant (Kostakis et al.,
2008). Studies have shown the possible use and potential benefits of ABC in the hotel industry
(Kostakis et al., 2011; Berts and Kock, 1995; Noone and Griffin, 1999).
New techniques assisting large scale ABC implementation have also been developed in recent years
(Kaplan and Anderson, 2004).
The restaurant industry is facing great challenges today, mainly due to the highly competitive
environment and the diverse needs of the customers. Restaurants have to achieve a balance between
serving these needs, and pricing their menu items to achieve adequate profitability levels (Raab et al.,
2009).Traditional costing systemsand simplistic pricing approaches were very popular within the
restaurant industry. Overhead cost and operating expenses were usually excluded and prices were a
function of food cost, as well as customer demand, historical prices and other factors. This method has
the evident disadvantage of leading to misleading information about individual menu items.

An Analysis of Business Intelligence Systems
This report is an analysis of business intelligence systems currently available to our business. As an
introduction, I will address in general terms why we need to purchase a business intelligence system
and how it will aid our business. Then I will discuss several applications in detail, paying particular
attention to the information and analysis capabilities of each, and the hardware and software required
for each. Finally, I will conclude with a short evaluation of the products discussed and offer a
recommendation as to the best application for our business. I will pay particular attention to IBM,
Microsoft, SAP, and Oracle. First off, why do we need a business intelligence system for our
business? Simply put, an effective ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In a SAP environment, the Cognos application helps consolidate and make more efficient the
reporting, planning, and scorecarding functions. Finally, in an Oracle environment the Cognos
application effectively combines with already existing Oracle and PeopleSoft databases, gateways,
and applications to allow for a virtually seamless integration. From an integration standpoint, Cognos
seems to be the business intelligence application that readily fits into almost any existing environment.
I looked at IBM next. IBM is a well recognized and established name in Information Technology. It
offers a broad business intelligence application capability, so consequently we need to decide exactly
where our data management needs really lie. IBM can offer wide ranging consulting services from
incorporating specific software applications to solve specific needs, to totally overhauling our already
existing IT architecture and business intelligence system to make it more efficient. As already stated,
IBM relies on Cognos for some of its business intelligence applications and these seem to be easily
integrated with almost any other environment. Additionally, Cognos offers the most popular OLAP
software used today. Oracle was the next company that I looked at. As already stated above, Oracle is
closely associated with Hyperion applications, although it does offer a very comprehensive business

Nails can not only be transformed into the prettiest part of your body, but also the filthiest, which is
why you need to take care of your nails and keep them safe from afflictions such as fungus. Fungus is
any of a group of unicellular, multicellular, or syncytial spore producing organisms feeding on organic

Student Non Violent Coordinating Committee
Young people throughout history have been drawn to social movements. These social movements
often included marches and non violent protesting, but not all of them included violence at the hands
of police or nights where sleep is impossible because of fear. The young people involved in Freedom
Summer in 1964 would change the course of history, but not without significant sacrifices. Freedom
Summer or the Mississippi Summer Project was the brainchild of the Student Non Violent
Coordinating Committee or SNCC. The project had four main goals, to expand African American
voter registration, to organize a legally constituted Freedom Democratic Party that will challenge the
whites only Mississippi Democratic Party, to establish freedom schools and to open community
centers where legal and medical assistance were available. In order to achieve these goals SNCC
specifically recruited 800 white students under the age of 21. Most of the volunteers were white
students who had participated in civil rights activities in the North...The fact that the volunteers were
expected to forgo summer jobs, to pay for their own transportation, and to provide their own bond
money in the event of arrest ensured that affluent students predominated. These students joined the
already solid African American activist core in the South. The African American staff members who
worked with the white volunteers often felt ambivalent about the need for white people to be hurt

Japanese Silk Factories Dbq Essay
Americans work an average of 34.4 hours a week, longer than their counterparts in the world s largest
economies ; but that amount of hours would ve meant paradise for mill workers in England and Japan
during the Industrial Revolution. The Industrial Revolution developed in England during the 1700 s
and in the late 1800 s, it moved to Japan. With the need for more textile production at the mills,
women and children began to get employed. Nevertheless, the female Japanese and English mill
workers had the same job and their experiences were quite similar. In both Japan and England, the

supports the claim that women were most likely to get a job because men had to be paid more since
they had more people to support. In addition, Edwin Hopwood, A History of the Lancashire Cotton

Comparison Between Hunger Games And Hunger Games
Taking the kids from our districts, forcing them to kill one another while we watch this is the Capitol s
way of reminding us how totally we are at their mercy. How little chance we would stand of surviving
another rebellion (19). This quote is from the novel Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. It describes
one way that The Capitol suppresses the people of Panem, potentially having two of their friends,
family, and children face off with other kids from a different district. The Capitol is reminding people
that they are dominant and the citizens can do nothing to oppose them. Hunger Games takes place in a
dystopian society where every year, a male and female tribute from ages 12 18 is chosen from each
district, 24 in total, to fight to the death to win food and supplies for their families, and was published
in 2008. Another example of a dystopian novel is Lord of the Flies by William Golding. Published in
1954, this book is about a group of boys from England who become stranded on an uninhabited island
after their plane was struck down, assumably because of a war. How do these books compare if they
were published about 54 years apart? One reason is that they both used fire symbolically. Another
reason is that they both have representations of evil in their books. Another reason that these books
compare is that of the settings in both places. Finally, they both compare because they both have
representations of civility and savagery. Even though these books were published

London Blitz Research Paper
World War 2 lead to the destruction of many cities throughout the world. Some of the cities include
Berlin, Tokyo, and many others. One city that would be hit hard would be London. What would be
known as The Blitz would try to cripple London into submission. The Battle of Britain would take
place during the time of these raids. London would be bombed countless times by the Nazi s hoping
for a surrender. London fearing of invasion by the Nazi s would move a great deal of artwork and,
children out of the city s museums and to other locations for protection. London would preserve and

Strategic bombing would be a major factor in the destruction of London. More than 500,000 people
would die because of strategic bombing campaigns. Blitzkrieg is also known as The Blitz would be a
major tactic used by the Nazi s. They would use this tactic to invade neighboring countries. By the
time the blitz came upon Britain the Nazi s conquered most of Europe. The Nazi s planned to attack
Britain and invade. They would try to cripple the British defenses. While trying to bombard their
defenses they accidentally attacked a civilian area which caused uproar with the British people. Many
people thought raids like this would not stop so they had a mass migration of children and artwork.
The Nazi s began bombing London in September of 1940 and this would last until May of 1941. The
Battle of Britain was going on around the same time. This battle would not only be important because
it would prove to the Nazi s that they could not invade Britain, but this would mark Hitler s first defeat
in World War 2. This would be a landmark battle because not only was this battle not fought on land,
but for this first time in human history the whole battle was fought in the skies. One of the greatest
military inventions would come out of this battle was radar. Radar was only in the infancy before the
battle, but would become vital in the allies victory in the war. London by the end of the war was in
need of major reconstruction. Many would see this as an opportunity to rebuild and grow the city like
never before. They would introduce satellite towns and high rise buildings. They would build the
Barbican which would hold office blocks, an arts centre, a museum, housing and a school. This would

Research Paper On Halo Effect
How Does Halo Effect Influence Our Daily Lives?
Halo effect is one of the cognitive bias. According to Edward Thorndike, the first psychologist to
introduce the idea of halo effect, the word halo is used in metaphor with the concept of religious. The
observer may be subject to overestimating the worth of the observed by the presence of a quality that
adds light on the whole like a halo. Essentially, our overall impression of a person influences our
evaluations of his or her specific traits. Although this theory is one of the oldest psychological
phenomena, surprisingly it is still involved in our lives.

The Importance Of Rights In Football Rights
At any high school football game, football players take a knee on the field when either an opponent s
player or their own team player is injured. This shows respect; a gesture of self surrender before the
greater reality of human suffering . However, when it comes to an actual NFL football game, taking
the knee has a whole different concept after former San Francisco 49ers quarterback, Colin
Kaepernick took the knee at a football game during the National Anthem as a form of protest against
the racial injustice and police brutality. After the impression Kaepernick made, half has argued that
this gesture is unpatriotic and politics should be disregarded in sports and the other half, including
some other football teams, are with Kaepernick and agree with his protest of police violence against
African Americans. Although it was and still now a strong movement, the reason behind it nowadays
has become redundant and shouldn t be as relevant as it is now. To start off, Colin Kaepernick started
his movement last year around the months of August and September. It began with him being seen
sitting down during the national anthem during preseason in August to him actually kneeling down in
September; a start of a silent protest. Kaepernick then later gave an explanation to his actions via NFL
website stating, I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black
people and people of color (SBNation). In other words, his reasoning for not

8)Major medical insurance offers protection for large medical expenses beyond what is established by
a regular health insurance policy. There is usually an added cost for this type of insurance coverage.
9) Special Risk insurance A person can also obtain protection against a certain type of accident (e.g.,
an airplane crash) or illness (e.g., cancer) through special risk insurance.
10)Catastrophic health insurance is among the least expensive forms of health insurance. Deductibles
are generally large for these types of policies. There also may be caps on the amount the policy will
pay in case of illness. These policies are only suitable for individuals with the financial means to
handle routine illnesses and hospitalizations.
11)hort term life insurance can only be purchased for a specific period of time. Coverage provided by
such policies ranges from catastrophic to comprehensive, with the latter being considerably more
expensive. Short term health insurance often comes with strict qualifying procedures and may not

Eastern Grey Squirrel Research Paper
The Eastern grey squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis) are small mammals that are often seen around parks
and trees in the New York City area. Both males and females look alike in color and size. On many
occasions they involve in behaviors may not be easily understood by the onlookers. They often engage
in behaviors such as deception, a behavior that involve a squirrel to cache its food from conspecifics
by pretending to hide its food in an area but instead carrying the food in its mouth and hiding it
elsewhere (Steele, M. A., Halkin, S. L., Smallwood, P. D., McKenna, T. J., Mitsopoulos, K., Beam, M.

Forging behaviors can be described as a behavior where animals have their heads down in search of
food and not too aware of what is happening in their immediate environment, where as a vigilant
behavior is where an animal is on its hind legs with its heads up or sometimes in a frozen position and
cannot forage (H.R. Pulliam, G.H. Pyke, T. Caraco, 1982). Because squirrels are small mammals they
do tend to be more vigilant of their surroundings. Foraging and vigilant behaviors are important
because of the fact that these animals are smaller and are likely to be attacked by predators. When they
are in a foraging behavior it can be difficult to be aware of other mammals that are lurking around,
thus they also involve themselves in vigilant behaviors to determine if there is a threat or not. Smaller
mammals tend to display higher vigilance than those of larger sizes due to their increased risk of

To have funded tax cuts the government will have to cut spending by eliminating waste and by

Medicare though slowing the rate of growth in spending on them. As quoted in a Business Week
editorial quot;Cutting the growth in Medicare spending by $150 billion would help open the way for a

because mistakes do lead to bad things sometimes, but other times, they lead to the most great

Lost Treasure states in paragraph 8 that Schliemann s careless actions erased important clues to Troy s

the lost city lost its wonder in the drilling and finding process. Many artifacts and important items

An Overview Of Financial Management And The Financial...
An Overview of Financial Management and the Financial Environment
Matthew Ellsworth
Abstract
Financial Management usually involves the process of planning, organizing and controlling the
financial activities of any enterprise to achieve the goals and objectives in financial terms of that
enterprise. The main objectives of financial management would be to create wealth for the business in
terms of movable cash for the organization and to ensure that the target return in investments is meet
at all times. The three key elements in financial management in simple terms may be put as a three
step continuous process involving financial planning, financial control and financial decision making.
In this post, we will discuss the types of company ownerships, the objectives and the derivatives.
Overview of Financial Management and Financial Environment Financial Management is concerned
with achieving the overall goals of the business firm by acquiring, financing and controlling the assets
of the firm. Financial Management can be described as an integrated decision making process as it has
a virtual impact on the achievement of the overall organizational goal. There are three key elements in
financial management namely financial planning, financial control and financial decision making. In
financial planning the management needs to ensure that enough funding is available to meet the
requirements of that business. Financial control is the most important activity which

The Effects Of Sleep On Respiratory Diseases
Introduction
Almost half of children s life is spent asleep. Therefore, it is important for the clinicians to know the
effect of sleep on respiratory diseases. (Marcus, 2001) Sleep disordered breathing may lead to serious
and miserable complications such as sleep fragmentation, cognitive and behavioral changes, growth
retardation, pulmonary hypertension and cor pulmonale. Unfortunately the prevalence of sleep related
breathing disorders is high (3 12% of pediatric population); obstructive sleep apnea syndrome alone
affects 3% of children.(Church 2012) Before the development of sleep studies, pediatricians mainly
depended on history and physical examination for the diagnosis of sleep disorders. Researchers have
tried to formulate clinical score questionnaires as an alternative to polysomnography. For the first time
in 1984, the role of history and physical examination in the diagnosis of OSAS was assessed by
Brouillete. However, several studies have demonstrated that clinical presentation alone cannot
differentiate sleep related breathing disorders such as primary snoring from OSAS. Brietzke SE
(Brietzke, Katz et al. 2004) showed that only 55.8% of patients were identified by clinical presentation
as OSAS; were confirmed by polysomnography later. This unreliability could be caused by several
factors; the most significant one is inaccuracy of history as some parents may overestimate difficulties

Analysis Of Artemisia Gentileschi s Judith Beheading...
Artemisia Gentileschi s Judith Beheading Holofernes
Although now praised for her work as an incredibly accomplished, feminist artist, Artemisia
Gentileschi s works were nearly expunged from history by those who believed her incapable of such
skill. As a female painter in the 17th century she faced innumerable challenges in pursuing work as an
artist, including, but not limited to; her exclusion from apprenticeship in the arts, the damage sustained
to her reputation after a lengthy rape trial in which she was tortured to prove her credibility and
subsequent defamation after the trial. After her death critics claimed her work as her father s or

These works both demonstrate her use of dramatic chiaroscuro, most likely as a result of the influence
of Caravaggio in her training, and her vivid use of color, as well as her ability to capture a moment in

In Judith Slaying Holofernes (V. II.) circa 1620, Gentileschi depicts the climactic moment of the
biblical story in which Judith, with the help of her maidservant, decapitates Holofernes. While a

purposefully involved in this act of violence. It is important to

Basing s Argument Analysis
Basing his work of Aristotle s, one philosopher s arrogant statement leads to a new understanding of
knowledge. Averroes argues that images are the foundation of intellect. While agree with Averroes on
how images are used to gain intellect, I disagree with him on his idea that on the wealthy could
become educated elite, because they could increase the rate of intellectual advancement if they fund or
help out the poor allowing them to become educated. First I ll be presenting Averroes argument, I will
then address my agreement on image and intellect, and will conclude with my disagreement about his

All of Averroes work lead to the founding of Averroism. This was a huge influence to scholars in the
13th and 14th centuries. The scholars who supported his and Aristotle s opinions were known as
Averroists. Some of the most well known Averroists were Jewish scholar Moses of Narbonne, and
Latin scholars Boethius of Dacia and Siger of Brabant. Along with many others, they interpreted
Averroes as truth according to reason, despite confliction with some Christian truths. In contrary, he
could have improved by helping out the poor so that when they become educated they too could
progress knowledge. The reason I say this is because he thought that only the educated elite were
capable of thinking philosophically, and the educated elite were usually wealthy because they were

to its simplicity. In addition, although it was common for people to do this, I think it was wrong for
him to say if you don t believe personal immortality (knowledge in the individual s mind) you would

Stereotypes In Paul Theroux sBeing A Man
There are two types of men portrayed by the media. There is the lazy dad who spends all day sitting in
the recliner eating potato chips and watching television. This man always has his wife taking care of
everything while he is a bumbling fool who can do nothing right. This man is harmless and
unintelligent. Then there is the action hero man. This man has a rugged, muscular build and is usually
very attractive. He can accomplish any task using his fist, but struggles to think through things
logically. Every man sees these two stereotypes and begins to try to fit one of them. This leads the
man to ask himself the question What is a Man? . Being a man is not letting stereotypes define him,
standing firm in his convictions, but being accepting of others at the same time, knowing when or
when not to take action, and having a dream. If asked what does it mean to be a man? the most
common responses would be answers like protector, provider, and taking charge. While there is
inherently nothing wrong with these answers the real problem lies in the fact which all men cannot
live up to these standards. These men are left questioning themselves on their masculinity. A man
should not let stereotypes define him. Paul Theroux addresses many of the common stereotypes in his
essay Being a Man , I was told to take up a sport, get more fresh air, join the Boy Scouts, and I was
urged not to read so much. and
Being a drunkard is another assertion, if misplaced, of manliness... A man proves his manhood in
America in old fashioned ways. He kills lions, like Hemingway; or he hunts ducks. like Nathanael
West; or he makes pronouncements like, A man should carry enough knife to defend himself with, as
James Jones once said to a Life interviewer (Theroux). Theroux addresses these common stereotypes
to prove how futile they are. A man should not let other people s idea of how a man should be
influence them. Many of the stereotypes listed by Theroux are unfeasible and hard for any man to
accomplish, further adding to the futility of them. Scott Russell Sanders compares two common
stereotypes of men in his essay The Men We Carry in Our Minds . Sanders address the stereotype of
the rugged muscular man who works all of his life

Snow White Psychological Disorder
The movie I chose was Snow White and Seven Dwarfs. I couldn t think of what movie to analyze but
then I remembered someone telling me that all the Disney princess movies have some type of
psychological disorder. So, I decided to find that out for myself and I decided to analyze the characters
in snow white. I didn t have the DVD with me at school, but I watched it online. Snow white lived in a
castle with the her mother and father. One day her mother got ill, no one could figure out how to save
her and she passed away. This caused a significant life change (Chapter 11 Stress, health, and Human
Flourishing). Snow White father, in grief got remarried to a new queen. The king suffered from
depression (Chapter 14 Psychological Disorders) and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sleepy would be diagnosed with narcolepsy. He had the tendency to fall asleep in random places.
(Chapter Three Sleep Dreams) The second dwarf she met was Grumpy. He has Intermittent Explosive
Disorder. He has this because he has outburst of anger and is always mad (Chapter 13 Social
Psychology). The Third dwarf was Happy. Happy has Mania, this is when you are really happy all the
time. Happy seems to always be exhibiting the Manic high. This also leads me to thing he Bipolar
Disorder. We only see him when he is on his highs and happy but every few weeks he could have
dramatic changes in personality and become sad. The next dwarf is Doc he has a speaking disorder
(Chapter 9 Thinking, Language, and Intelligence) but he also had OCD because he likes things being
done in a certain way. The next dwarf was Sneezy. Sneezy is a hypochondriac. A hypochondriac is
someone who is anxious about his or her health. Sneezy is always sneezing (Chapter 11 Stress, health,

Sydney s Northern Beaches Case Study
Introduction An increase in population and subsequent urbanisation of Sydney s Northern Beaches has
put growing pressure on the surrounding coastal ecosystems. The Manly Dam catchment area
encompasses 375 hectares of urban and industrial areas, waterways, bushland and parks (Fig. 1C).
This catchment is home to a vast number of native flora and fauna, and is a hub for recreational
activity. Preserving the ecological state of this catchment area involves developing and maintaining an
effective management strategy. Catchment Condition The overall condition of the Manly Dam
catchment area is affected by a number of factors. A growing population and resultant urbanisation has
led to excessive runoff rates across the region. This increase in ... Show more content on

A discharge of leachate and other pollutants could potentially affect the groundwater quality of the
entire area (Ginns Wright, 2014). Algal bloom outbreaks have also affected the water quality. Periodic
water quality management of all waterways within the catchment should be continued to monitor
sediment and leachate values. Encourage further bush regeneration to limit run off linked to an
increase in algal blooms. It is also worth noting that a large propeller is already in place to oxygenate

Characteristics Of The Null Hypothesis
Our lab investigated the morphological characteristics of leaves found in the sun and shade on various
species of maple and oak trees around campus. Our null hypothesis was Acer and Quercus acclimate
similarly with regards to SLW (specific leaf weight), size, and sinuosity. Our hypothesis was Quercus
acclimation is greater than Acer SLW, size, and sinuosity. We tested these hypotheses by picking small
sections of a branches from both maple and oak trees. A group was assigned either a maple or an oak
tree, and needed a total of three different trees per group. Once three different trees were chosen,
groups needed three shade leaves and three sun leaves of off each different tree. In total, each group
should then end up with 18 leaves for testing. After collecting the leaves, we ran them through the
LiCor 3100 leaf area meter to identify the area of each leaf. Major results found by the classes mutual
data was each one of our p values were greater than .05. This means that we failed to reject the null
hypothesis. Thus, the lab results do not support our hypothesis that Quercus acclimation is greater than
Acer SLW, size, and sinuosity.
Introduction
In articles written by Thomas Jurik and Ulo Niinements and Kalevi Kull they discuss how sun and
shade leaves look different and why. Both papers suggest that sun leaves have thicker cuticles and are
more deeply lobed. In addition, sun leaves have less surface area to limit the amount of
evapotranspiration that occurs in the leaves

Nucor Corporation Case Analysis Essay
To: Dan DiMicco
From: McKensie Booth
Subject: Strategic Management
Date: 11/9/2010
Nucor Corporation Memo Response:
Per your request I have analyzed Nucor Corporation and the steel industry. After performing both
strategic and financial analysis I offer my recommendations.
Executive Summary:
Nucor Corporation was the most profitable steel producer in North America in both 2005 and 2006. It
is regarded as a low cost steel producer in the United States, and one of the most efficient and
technologically innovative steel producers in the world. Nucor is known for its aggressive pursuit of
innovation and technical excellence, rigorous quality systems, strong emphasis on employee relations
and workforce productivity, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Product differentiation is also a major barrier to entry. Steel is not sold on its overall difference, but
more commonly on price. Many manufacturers utilize the same technologies and processes. Price
wars are seen to minimize fixed costs, which mean there are few switching costs from one
manufacturer to another. There is very little brand loyalty in this industry, especially when it does not
appeal to consumer loyalty or brand image. Entrants must find ways to compete based on lower costs.
Access to raw materials can also be a barrier. A lot of the time materials must be bought in large
quantities. There is no cost advantage associated with small material purchases, and that can directly
increase the overall manufacturing costs. This can make competition challenging in a market where
margins are already very small. Government policy is not a huge threat of entry on the domestic level,
but at the international level the barriers become much larger. Well established relationships by larger
steel manufacturers with government allows for easy establishment of contracts in a foreign territory.
Since most steel manufacturers must be globally competitive to maintain profits government policy is
a threatening entry barrier.
Bargaining Power of Suppliers: Strong The supply of raw materials can have a positive or negative
effect on a cost strategy. Most of the steel used in domestic manufacturing in the United States is
imported. On

Still Alice
Every year, the number of people with Alzheimer s doubles every 5 years beyond the age of 65, and as
of 2013, 13 million Americans were suffering from this disease (CDC). Still Alice, written by Lisa
Genova is about a woman in her fifties who is diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer s disease. She is
a very successful woman with three kids and a loving husband. She had a great career as a cognitive
psychology professor at Harvard, but that came to an end when this disease took over her brain. As the
story reads on you learn about her thoughts and overcome her hardships along with her as she fights
against this disease. You experience the losses she and her family did from Alzheimer s. This book
gives you insight into the brain of someone who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was also hard to keep track of time, it was hard to know how much her disease had progressed.
Another reason you may not enjoy this book is because if you have never known anyone suffering
from the disease or have any relationship with it, it may be hard to connect with the characters and
their struggles. It may sound tedious or over dramatic, but in reality, it is as scary as forgetting where
you live and walking into your neighbor s house instead of your

Rejection In Edward Scissorhands
Life is not always fair. Many times people have been turned down, had the door slammed in their
faces or have been told, No . But it is this rejection that helps people get back on their feet. Sometimes
it is this rejection that builds strength and character in the person. In the movie Edward Scissorhands,
Tim Burton (the director) has shown that rejection affects everyone, but it can help to make some
people stronger and brings out a side of the person that wasn t there before. People are rejected every
day, sometimes based purely on how they look or act. In today s society, it is quite common for people
to be refused, if they decide to be different. In Edward Scissorhands Edward is looked at as though he
is a monster because of the fact

Individual incentive pay plans are most appropriate under three conditions; First, employee s
performance can be measured objectively, Second, individual incentive plans are appropriate when
employees have sufficient control over work outcomes, Third, individual incentive plans are
appropriate when they do not create a level of unhealthy competition among workers that ultimately
leads to poor quality. Individual Incentive plans reward employees for meeting such work related
performance standards as quality, productivity, customer satisfaction, safety or attendance. Any one of
these standards by itself or in combination may be used. A company ultimately should employ the
standards that represent work that an employee actually performs. When designed and implemented
well, individual incentive plans reward employees based on results for which they are directly
responsible. The end result should be that excellent performers receive higher incentive awards than
poor performers. There are four types of individual incentive plans; Piecework plan. Under piecework
plans an employee s compensation depends on the number of units he or she produces over a given
period. Management incentive plans. These plans award bonuses to managers when they meet or
exceed objectives based on sales, profit, production or other for measures their

The Marketing Environment Is Continuously Being Shaped By...
The marketing environment is continuously being shaped by the irresistible force of technology driven
change and innovation Winston and Edelbach (2012). The technologies available today have altered
the fundamental principles and the communication tools available to marketers. Further discussed by
Baines, Fill and Page (2011), the advent of the internet has allowed for the development and adoption
of digital resources, from mobile technologies to the social web; including blogs, social networking
sites, and multimedia services etc. Meaning, companies can now compete anywhere on the globe, on
multiple platforms, thanks to the internet. This has changed the ways entire industries compete and
how they now offer, previously unimaginable, customer value and benefits (Capon 2012).
The digital shift has not only enhanced the communication methods of organisations, but has arguably
lead to a power shift in favour of customers is the customer king?
For decades, the traditional sales funnel process the more passive people you push down the top of the
funnel, the more buyers will fall out the bottom drove marketing behaviour (Field, 2012). In essence,
companies pushed customers towards their products and services due to their perceived need and
value. If the customers falling through the funnel needed further information, then they would acquire
a company brochure, call the company help line or visit the retail store.
However, Capon (2012) believes, that the passive

To Ishmael Beah Themes
First hand and real life experiences are key to an interesting and eye opening novel. Ishmael Beah is
an inspiring author who wrote and continues to write about his life and the terrifying and heart
breaking accounts he has experienced as a boy soldier in the Sierra Leone war. As a child, Ishmael
was in love with the art of rap and hip hop, especially one of the most famous hits from the United
States, Rapper s Delight. To Ishmael, rap and hip hop was not just music; it was a motivation and a
hope to get through the harsh wartime and rehabilitation (Joan). Ishmael Beah is a modern author who
writes eye opening novels about his horrific experiences as a boy soldier in the Sierra Leone war
against the Rebel soldiers. Ishmael Beah was born on November 23, 1980 in Sierra Leone (Beah 1).
At the start of Beah s life everything seemed to be perfect, he described Sierra Leone as an image

Fear has a huge impact on this book because it is a common emotion people would feel during a civil
war. For instance, Often, my shadow would scare me and cause me to run for miles. Everything felt
awkwardly brutal. Even the air seemed to want to attack me and break my neck (Beah 49). This quote
shows the concern and fear a person would have during a time of war. Ishmael constantly had to look
over his shoulder and worry about his safety. However, another tone given off was hope. This tone is
seen closer to the end of the book when Ishmael starts to overcome past war memories. For example,
Nonetheless, I was happy to have made it out of Freetown, to have escaped the possibility to become a
soldier again. This gave me some comfort (Beah 217). This quote shows the slow recovery of Ishmael
from living life scared to somewhat content. One of Beah s reasons for writing this book is to tell his
life story and how he was able to conquer the fear of his past with hope from the

  • 2. Symbolism In A Rose For Emily By William Faulkner Love can distill rage into individuals when it is not mutual. In A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner, things begin to go south as Emily Grierson encounters her biggest fear: change. Ms. Emily is viewed as a monument and chore to her community. After her father s death, her world seems to flow accordingly behind his passing. Meanwhile, her emotional health declines in conjunction with her physical surroundings. Emily Grierson suffers from emotional decay due to isolation by her father, unrequited love, and unrealistic expectations from the townspeople causing her to embrace murder. Although Ms. Emily s father was dead, he still had mental control over her endeavors. She was left feeling vulnerable and open to love from a male. Emily knew no love outside of her father s grasp. Faulkner writes how after her father s death, people hardly saw her at all (sec.2 para.2). It was understood around the community that no man was good enough for Ms. Emily, according to her father. Faulkner expresses symbolism as he describes Emily as a slender figure in white in the background... and her father as a spraddled silhouette in the foreground... clutching a horsewhip (sec.2 para.13). By describing her father as a silhouette , Faulkner directly foreshadows her father s role in her current life succeeding his death. He acts as a shadow behind her, foreshadowing her long term emotional instability. Because of his confinement, Ms. Emily was robbed of the experience of any intimate ... • 3. Activity-based costing in restaurants Activity based costing in restaurants 1. Introduction Interest in cost and management accounting practices in the restaurant industry is rising (Raab et al., 2009; Annaraud et al., 2008). Pavesic (1985) has initiated research in pricing and cost accounting for restaurants, introducing the concept of profit factor (PF) in menu engineering (ME). Prior studies, such as the one presented in Chan and Au (1998) investigate the implications of not incorporating overhead costs in menu item profitability analyses in restaurants in Hong Kong. Since then, a number of researchers have examined the application of contemporary cost and management accounting techniques, and particularly activity based costing (ABC) in a restaurant environment ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To this end Kaplan and Cooper (1998) suggest that service companies are ideal candidates for ABC. One reason for this is that in the services industry a great percentage of total cost is labour cost and processes are highly variant (Kostakis et al., 2008). Studies have shown the possible use and potential benefits of ABC in the hotel industry (Kostakis et al., 2011; Berts and Kock, 1995; Noone and Griffin, 1999). New techniques assisting large scale ABC implementation have also been developed in recent years (Kaplan and Anderson, 2004). The restaurant industry is facing great challenges today, mainly due to the highly competitive environment and the diverse needs of the customers. Restaurants have to achieve a balance between serving these needs, and pricing their menu items to achieve adequate profitability levels (Raab et al., 2009).Traditional costing systemsand simplistic pricing approaches were very popular within the restaurant industry. Overhead cost and operating expenses were usually excluded and prices were a function of food cost, as well as customer demand, historical prices and other factors. This method has the evident disadvantage of leading to misleading information about individual menu items. Research ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. An Analysis of Business Intelligence Systems This report is an analysis of business intelligence systems currently available to our business. As an introduction, I will address in general terms why we need to purchase a business intelligence system and how it will aid our business. Then I will discuss several applications in detail, paying particular attention to the information and analysis capabilities of each, and the hardware and software required for each. Finally, I will conclude with a short evaluation of the products discussed and offer a recommendation as to the best application for our business. I will pay particular attention to IBM, Microsoft, SAP, and Oracle. First off, why do we need a business intelligence system for our business? Simply put, an effective ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In a SAP environment, the Cognos application helps consolidate and make more efficient the reporting, planning, and scorecarding functions. Finally, in an Oracle environment the Cognos application effectively combines with already existing Oracle and PeopleSoft databases, gateways, and applications to allow for a virtually seamless integration. From an integration standpoint, Cognos seems to be the business intelligence application that readily fits into almost any existing environment. I looked at IBM next. IBM is a well recognized and established name in Information Technology. It offers a broad business intelligence application capability, so consequently we need to decide exactly where our data management needs really lie. IBM can offer wide ranging consulting services from incorporating specific software applications to solve specific needs, to totally overhauling our already existing IT architecture and business intelligence system to make it more efficient. As already stated, IBM relies on Cognos for some of its business intelligence applications and these seem to be easily integrated with almost any other environment. Additionally, Cognos offers the most popular OLAP software used today. Oracle was the next company that I looked at. As already stated above, Oracle is closely associated with Hyperion applications, although it does offer a very comprehensive business ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Student Non Violent Coordinating Committee Young people throughout history have been drawn to social movements. These social movements often included marches and non violent protesting, but not all of them included violence at the hands of police or nights where sleep is impossible because of fear. The young people involved in Freedom Summer in 1964 would change the course of history, but not without significant sacrifices. Freedom Summer or the Mississippi Summer Project was the brainchild of the Student Non Violent Coordinating Committee or SNCC. The project had four main goals, to expand African American voter registration, to organize a legally constituted Freedom Democratic Party that will challenge the whites only Mississippi Democratic Party, to establish freedom schools and to open community centers where legal and medical assistance were available. In order to achieve these goals SNCC specifically recruited 800 white students under the age of 21. Most of the volunteers were white students who had participated in civil rights activities in the North...The fact that the volunteers were expected to forgo summer jobs, to pay for their own transportation, and to provide their own bond money in the event of arrest ensured that affluent students predominated. These students joined the already solid African American activist core in the South. Japanese Silk Factories Dbq Essay Americans work an average of 34.4 hours a week, longer than their counterparts in the world s largest economies ; but that amount of hours would ve meant paradise for mill workers in England and Japan during the Industrial Revolution. The Industrial Revolution developed in England during the 1700 s and in the late 1800 s, it moved to Japan. With the need for more textile production at the mills, women and children began to get employed. Nevertheless, the female Japanese and English mill workers had the same job and their experiences were quite similar. Again, this quote supports the claim that women were most likely to get a job because men had to be paid more since they had more people to support. In addition, Edwin Hopwood, A History of the Lancashire Cotton Industry and the Amalgamated Weaver s Association, also researched women s lives after being factory workers. • 9. Comparison Between Hunger Games And Hunger Games Taking the kids from our districts, forcing them to kill one another while we watch this is the Capitol s way of reminding us how totally we are at their mercy. How little chance we would stand of surviving another rebellion (19). This quote is from the novel Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. It describes one way that The Capitol suppresses the people of Panem, potentially having two of their friends, family, and children face off with other kids from a different district. The Capitol is reminding people that they are dominant and the citizens can do nothing to oppose them. Hunger Games takes place in a dystopian society where every year, a male and female tribute from ages 12 18 is chosen from each district, 24 in total, to fight to the death to win food and supplies for their families, and was published in 2008. Another example of a dystopian novel is Lord of the Flies by William Golding. Published in 1954, this book is about a group of boys from England who become stranded on an uninhabited island after their plane was struck down, assumably because of a war. How do these books compare if they were published about 54 years apart? One reason is that they both used fire symbolically. Another reason is that they both have representations of evil in their books. Another reason that these books compare is that of the settings in both places. Finally, they both compare because they both have representations of civility and savagery. Even though these books were published ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

By the time the blitz came upon Britain the Nazi s conquered most of Europe. The Nazi s planned to attack Britain and invade. They would try to cripple the British defenses. While trying to bombard their defenses they accidentally attacked a civilian area which caused uproar with the British people. Many people thought raids like this would not stop so they had a mass migration of children and artwork. The Nazi s began bombing London in September of 1940 and this would last until May of 1941. The Battle of Britain was going on around the same time. This battle would not only be important because it would prove to the Nazi s that they could not invade Britain, but this would mark Hitler s first defeat in World War 2. This would be a landmark battle because not only was this battle not fought on land, but for this first time in human history the whole battle was fought in the skies. One of the greatest military inventions would come out of this battle was radar. Radar was only in the infancy before the battle, but would become vital in the allies victory in the war. According to Edward Thorndike, the first psychologist to introduce the idea of halo effect, the word halo is used in metaphor with the concept of religious. The observer may be subject to overestimating the worth of the observed by the presence of a quality that adds light on the whole like a halo. Essentially, our overall impression of a person influences our evaluations of his or her specific traits. • 12. The Importance Of Rights In Football Rights At any high school football game, football players take a knee on the field when either an opponent s player or their own team player is injured. This shows respect; a gesture of self surrender before the greater reality of human suffering . However, when it comes to an actual NFL football game, taking the knee has a whole different concept after former San Francisco 49ers quarterback, Colin Kaepernick took the knee at a football game during the National Anthem as a form of protest against the racial injustice and police brutality. After the impression Kaepernick made, half has argued that this gesture is unpatriotic and politics should be disregarded in sports and the other half, including some other football teams, are with Kaepernick and agree with his protest of police violence against African Americans. Although it was and still now a strong movement, the reason behind it nowadays has become redundant and shouldn t be as relevant as it is now. To start off, Colin Kaepernick started his movement last year around the months of August and September. It began with him being seen sitting down during the national anthem during preseason in August to him actually kneeling down in September; a start of a silent protest. Kaepernick then later gave an explanation to his actions via NFL website stating, I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color (SBNation). Both males and females look alike in color and size. On many occasions they involve in behaviors may not be easily understood by the onlookers. They often engage in behaviors such as deception, a behavior that involve a squirrel to cache its food from conspecifics by pretending to hide its food in an area but instead carrying the food in its mouth and hiding it elsewhere (Steele, M. Forging behaviors can be described as a behavior where animals have their heads down in search of food and not too aware of what is happening in their immediate environment, where as a vigilant behavior is where an animal is on its hind legs with its heads up or sometimes in a frozen position and cannot forage (H.R. Pulliam, G.H. Pyke, T. Caraco, 1982). Because squirrels are small mammals they do tend to be more vigilant of their surroundings. Foraging and vigilant behaviors are important because of the fact that these animals are smaller and are likely to be attacked by predators. When they are in a foraging behavior it can be difficult to be aware of other mammals that are lurking around, thus they also involve themselves in vigilant behaviors to determine if there is a threat or not. • 17. Marvel Mistakes Mistakes or Marvels? Whoops! Percy Spencer left the chocolate bar in his pocket while going to the Magnetron! What? It melted? Let us discuss that. Mistakes are made worldwide every day, whether it is forgetting your homework or dropping that antique jar your mother treasures. Although, most people do not pay attention to the good things that come out of making mistakes. For example, I mentioned Percy Spencer and the chocolate bar. He did not mean to leave the chocolate bar in his pocket, but when he did, he made a discovery that everyday people use to their advantage nowadays. Percy Spencer, after making one little mistake, created the microwave. In the article titled How a Melted Bar of Chocolate Changed Our Kitchens, it says that Percy ... I have to somewhat agree with them, because mistakes do lead to bad things sometimes, but other times, they lead to the most great discoveries we have ever known. For an example of the opposing opinion, the passage Lost Cities, Lost Treasure states in paragraph 8 that Schliemann s careless actions erased important clues to Troy s past. In explanation, since Schliemann only cared about the fame for discovering the lost city of Troy, the lost city lost its wonder in the drilling and finding process. Many artifacts and important items were destroyed. That is an example of a mistake leading to a bad thing. Although, the article also does state that Together, they (Schliemann and Calvert) did prove there had been an ancient city called Troy. So, there was also a big discovery out of the bad mistake. • 19. The Effects Of Sleep On Respiratory Diseases Introduction Almost half of children s life is spent asleep. Therefore, it is important for the clinicians to know the effect of sleep on respiratory diseases. (Marcus, 2001) Sleep disordered breathing may lead to serious and miserable complications such as sleep fragmentation, cognitive and behavioral changes, growth retardation, pulmonary hypertension and cor pulmonale. Unfortunately the prevalence of sleep related breathing disorders is high (3 12% of pediatric population); obstructive sleep apnea syndrome alone affects 3% of children.(Church 2012) Before the development of sleep studies, pediatricians mainly depended on history and physical examination for the diagnosis of sleep disorders. Researchers have tried to formulate clinical score questionnaires as an alternative to polysomnography. For the first time in 1984, the role of history and physical examination in the diagnosis of OSAS was assessed by Brouillete. However, several studies have demonstrated that clinical presentation alone cannot differentiate sleep related breathing disorders such as primary snoring from OSAS. Brietzke SE (Brietzke, Katz et al. 2004) showed that only 55.8% of patients were identified by clinical presentation as OSAS; were confirmed by polysomnography later. This unreliability could be caused by several factors; the most significant one is inaccuracy of history as some parents may overestimate difficulties in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Artemisia Gentileschi s Judith Beheading Holofernes Although now praised for her work as an incredibly accomplished, feminist artist, Artemisia Gentileschi s works were nearly expunged from history by those who believed her incapable of such skill. As a female painter in the 17th century she faced innumerable challenges in pursuing work as an artist, including, but not limited to; her exclusion from apprenticeship in the arts, the damage sustained to her reputation after a lengthy rape trial in which she was tortured to prove her credibility and subsequent defamation after the trial. After her death critics claimed her work as her father s or husband s, not until recently did she begin to see the credit she deserved (Poggioli, 2016). One of her most famous ... All of Averroes work lead to the founding of Averroism. This was a huge influence to scholars in the 13th and 14th centuries. The scholars who supported his and Aristotle s opinions were known as Averroists. Some of the most well known Averroists were Jewish scholar Moses of Narbonne, and Latin scholars Boethius of Dacia and Siger of Brabant. Along with many others, they interpreted Averroes as truth according to reason, despite confliction with some Christian truths. In contrary, he could have improved by helping out the poor so that when they become educated they too could progress knowledge. The reason I say this is because he thought that only the educated elite were capable of thinking philosophically, and the educated elite were usually wealthy because they were able to afford education. He briefly talks about how the Qur an the most an uneducated can grasp due to its simplicity. • 22. Stereotypes In Paul Theroux sBeing A Man There are two types of men portrayed by the media. There is the lazy dad who spends all day sitting in the recliner eating potato chips and watching television. This man always has his wife taking care of everything while he is a bumbling fool who can do nothing right. This man is harmless and unintelligent. Then there is the action hero man. This man has a rugged, muscular build and is usually very attractive. He can accomplish any task using his fist, but struggles to think through things logically. Every man sees these two stereotypes and begins to try to fit one of them. This leads the man to ask himself the question What is a Man? . Being a man is not letting stereotypes define him, standing firm in his convictions, but being accepting of others at the same time, knowing when or when not to take action, and having a dream. If asked what does it mean to be a man? the most common responses would be answers like protector, provider, and taking charge. While there is inherently nothing wrong with these answers the real problem lies in the fact which all men cannot live up to these standards. These men are left questioning themselves on their masculinity. A man should not let stereotypes define him. Paul Theroux addresses many of the common stereotypes in his essay Being a Man , I was told to take up a sport, get more fresh air, join the Boy Scouts, and I was urged not to read so much. and Being a drunkard is another assertion, if misplaced, of manliness... A man proves his manhood in America in old fashioned ways. He kills lions, like Hemingway; or he hunts ducks. like Nathanael West; or he makes pronouncements like, A man should carry enough knife to defend himself with, as James Jones once said to a Life interviewer (Theroux). Theroux addresses these common stereotypes to prove how futile they are. A man should not let other people s idea of how a man should be influence them. Many of the stereotypes listed by Theroux are unfeasible and hard for any man to accomplish, further adding to the futility of them. • 25. Characteristics Of The Null Hypothesis Our lab investigated the morphological characteristics of leaves found in the sun and shade on various species of maple and oak trees around campus. Our null hypothesis was Acer and Quercus acclimate similarly with regards to SLW (specific leaf weight), size, and sinuosity. Our hypothesis was Quercus acclimation is greater than Acer SLW, size, and sinuosity. We tested these hypotheses by picking small sections of a branches from both maple and oak trees. A group was assigned either a maple or an oak tree, and needed a total of three different trees per group. Once three different trees were chosen, groups needed three shade leaves and three sun leaves of off each different tree. In total, each group should then end up with 18 leaves for testing. After collecting the leaves, we ran them through the LiCor 3100 leaf area meter to identify the area of each leaf. Major results found by the classes mutual data was each one of our p values were greater than .05. This means that we failed to reject the null hypothesis. Thus, the lab results do not support our hypothesis that Quercus acclimation is greater than Acer SLW, size, and sinuosity. Introduction In articles written by Thomas Jurik and Ulo Niinements and Kalevi Kull they discuss how sun and shade leaves look different and why. Both papers suggest that sun leaves have thicker cuticles and are more deeply lobed. In addition, sun leaves have less surface area to limit the amount of evapotranspiration that occurs in the leaves ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Product differentiation is also a major barrier to entry. Steel is not sold on its overall difference, but more commonly on price. Many manufacturers utilize the same technologies and processes. Price wars are seen to minimize fixed costs, which mean there are few switching costs from one manufacturer to another. There is very little brand loyalty in this industry, especially when it does not appeal to consumer loyalty or brand image. Entrants must find ways to compete based on lower costs. Access to raw materials can also be a barrier. A lot of the time materials must be bought in large quantities. There is no cost advantage associated with small material purchases, and that can directly increase the overall manufacturing costs. This can make competition challenging in a market where margins are already very small. Government policy is not a huge threat of entry on the domestic level, but at the international level the barriers become much larger. Well established relationships by larger steel manufacturers with government allows for easy establishment of contracts in a foreign territory. Since most steel manufacturers must be globally competitive to maintain profits government policy is a threatening entry barrier. Bargaining Power of Suppliers: Strong The supply of raw materials can have a positive or negative effect on a cost strategy. Most of the steel used in domestic manufacturing in the United States is imported. On

The marketing environment is continuously being shaped by the irresistible force of technology driven change and innovation Winston and Edelbach (2012). The technologies available today have altered the fundamental principles and the communication tools available to marketers. Further discussed by Baines, Fill and Page (2011), the advent of the internet has allowed for the development and adoption of digital resources, from mobile technologies to the social web; including blogs, social networking sites, and multimedia services etc. Meaning, companies can now compete anywhere on the globe, on multiple platforms, thanks to the internet. This has changed the ways entire industries compete and how they now offer, previously unimaginable, customer value and benefits (Capon 2012).
