This presentation helps us to look at professional networking from a more friendly and informal perspective. What works when you're looking for a job? What doesn't work?
The presentation starts off with a set of premises such as 'a friend is more likely to help you than a non-friend when looking at your resume' - a set of facts/assumptions that help drive the argument of corporate pick-up lines forward. We then discuss a set of lines that were used successfully to start a normal conversation, and we look at the common elements that help us start conversation with complete strangers. This can, in essence, be used to create new friendships (note 'friendships' rather than 'professional connections') which lead to new and exciting opportunities.
Does the thought of entering a room full of people horrify you?
Do you have challenge initiating conversations?
Do you find it tiring to be around lots of other people?
If you answered "Yes" to the above questions, you may be an introvert who has challenges at networking. I have practical tips for you in these slides, starting with attributes of the introvert. You too can be great at networking.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

Editor's Notes
Good morning chapter, a few of you may remember Will from my first presentation on GO GREEN. For those of you, who missed that presentation, let me introduce you to WILL. So WILL Is A WINNER, an accomplished entrepreneur, high-achieving super member of BNI. So WILL, The supermember has now become a he’s now a super networker, as he not only networks at BNI but outside BNI as well. So today, he’s going to discuss his top-5 secrets of networking….I’d also like to introduce you to WILL’s best buddy – Jill, here’s their little story on networking
Jill, a smart and sharp business woman, sometimes found it difficult to deal with a crisis. It could be an ad for a wanted tutor, or to fix up an inefficient printer,. BNI Supermember, and our friend, Will, always seemed to have a solution.
Days went by, and Jill always turned to her friendly neighborhood master networker for help, until, she decided she wanted to know exactly what Will did that made him the best part of her contact list. Let’s look at Will’s five secrets to being a master networker.
The first secret from Will is to manage your network. That hardly means making an excel entry every time you get a new business card – it means keeping in touch. We all get busy, and we all have those days where we’d rather keep to ourselves. But take a minute, and raise your hands if you can come up with at least five people in your personal and professional circle that you are constantly in touch with –no family members allowed! A great rule of thumb is that you need to start keeping up with your network if you cannot even name five people you can count on.
Will isn’t just all talk and no show –he doesn’t just keep up with his network, he appreciates them for keeping up to date with him! This means a gift on a birthday, anniversary or wedding, a hug when his friends feel low, and just a thank you note on their desk to show them that they matter.
Often we turn to certain contacts simply because they’re the best gofers in a crisis. Don’t be there when you need something, or when the weather is sunny on the side of your neighbor. A good networker is supportive, helps his network out in need, and can be counted on if things get rough.
Referring someone to a cool networking zone like BNI already puts you at the top as a master networker –but you know what? Follow-up! Ask those you invite, those you refer, if they are liking their experience. Help them out. A kind gesture makes a life-long contact. Will told me once that if you’re there for someone, that someone will always be there for you. Selfless good deeds sometimes turn into reliable connections. Don’t lose out!
Finally, imagine meeting this disheveled, angry young man, and being asked if you want to be friends? Not unless he’s Amitabh Bacchan, right? Or having to deal with this sad sack on your back? Hmm, not a great look, Will! The trick is to be presentable, approachable, and appreciative of the time and energy of others. It makes others glad to be in your midst.
Well, now that we know how to be a master networker, what secret are you going to do today?
Finally, Robery Kiyosaki once said, The richest people in the world look for and build networks; everyone else looks for work. (This is a teaser for the next one, pls do edit) Will’s on his way to Toronto – we’ll be back soon to talk about Will and his trysts with referrals.
