  1. Have you ever walked into a networking event and found yourself a bit… less than inspired? Do you watch others soar through networking and new business deals while you barely pull through? Well, then you might be a victim of the ‘Shotgun approach’ to networking.
  2. Shotgun Networking is basically biting the bullet and aiming a personalized sales pitch at someone you’ve just met. It can be quite frustrating to walk out of a networking event wherein you’ve flooded eyes and ears with your schemes with absolutely no business in hand. But a networking event is hardly the place to think cash – think ass! Show interest – when you approach someone, show interest in not just them, but also in their profession and their own interests. A quick tip – most networking events mean a name badge with their designation and field. Some basic knowledge prior to the talk will lead to some pretty savvy conversations. Ask the right questions – when you shake someone’s hand, you want to know more about them than just their name and the designer of their suit. No matter how many networking events an industry giant attends, they are always pleasantly surprised by those who ask them the right questions. You will be lost in a crowd of other attendees if all you do is either talk about your business or simply ask about their health or the weather. They say you have 15 seconds to make the impression of a lifetime –make it count with the right questions. Save contacts – while creating a rapport with a potential client can be nerve-wrecking, don’t forget to walk away with a number or at least a linked in ID. This way, you ensure that you always find a way to connect with the person you’re looking to add to your network. Send requests –and I don’t just mean social media requests. After you obtain a business card, look to getting back in touch with a newly found contact. Ask them for a coffee meet, invite them to another event as a plus one –or even make them your visitor at BNI! This keeps your contact feeling like you haven’t completely forgotten about them. The number one missed opportunity related to networking is a failure to follow up. Finally, with these things you’ll surely yield the results you wish for –but, slow and steady!
  3. Tip 1 – Interesting people are interested in others: It’s great to have power-packed ideas –but it’s even better to actually show interest in whom you liaise with! Tip 2: Look for opportunities to grow your communication skills – great communicators work at their conversations – they focus on the person they are talking to, not the walls or clocks behind them.
  4. Following up! As a PR person, nobody understands the pain of follow-up calls as much as me –and so, I have a few steps you should follow when following up with a recently met contact! The 24/7/30 system is simple – when you meet someone at a networking event of any sort, drop them a note within 24 hours of meeting them. Within 7 days – connect on their most used social media – and DON’T try to make a sale.
