In the Secrets of Networking
Do not overthink
• If not courageous enough, join a friends network or ask them to go with you.
• Start a networking group yourself.
Start Right Now
HAVE A PLAN
• Set a goal for each networking event you attend.
(today I’ll talk to 10 people, Or . Today I will see everyone’s presentation, / I will collect 10
business cards)
• Make New Contacts
• Is the whole purpose of networking, to create new opportunities
• Keep moving ON!
• Do not get stuck with one group.
ARRIVE EARLY, LEAVE EARLY
• EARLY is always better than LATE.
- Shows you are responsible, committed,, and also is easier to move around.
• More chance to talk to the people you want.
- You have an objective, do not forget it, and aim accurately
• Never be the last one to leave.
• Just DON’T you are not waiting for a prize or nomination.
• If you leave before things are winding down, it makes you seem a little more in control .
• If the event is really, really, boring, you can excuse yourself much earlier, but give it a chance!
DO NOT GET STUCK
 The whole purpose of networking is to create new opportunities.
 thus you have to meet new people.
 Never get stuck talking to the same person for more than 5 minutes.
A lot of information can be exchanged in five minutes, any more than that ..and is personal
 In 2 – 3 minutes, assess whether someone is valuable
- Be honest, and make plans to follow up if it is on your best interests.
MEET THE PEOPLE YOU WANT TO MEET
• Act swift, but be gentle.
• Just really, Push yourself FORWARD!
• Take your chances, they may only come once. No hesitation.
FOLLOW UP
• After you have gotten personal information, follow up with an e-mail the next day.
• Bring up the time and place where you met, in order to jog his/her memory.
• ( Don’t let too much time go by, or you will be forgotten)
• Keep an ongoing list of contacts you want to keep up with.
“Dead connections will not bring any lights up” – either fix them or remove them.
• Does Networking take work and time? Yes
- Seeing & being seen is all part of the game. There will be times that you just would not
like it. ..
- to remember that is all part of the networking effect you put yourself out there..
- It will pay off.. With results to the effort you put in. Think of it like a game, and
have fun at the same time.
