Meir Dagan was born in 1945 as Meir Huberman on a train...
Meir Dagan was born in 1945 as Meir Huberman on a train between the USSR and Poland while his
Polish Jewish parents were escaping the Holocaust to live in the Soviet Union. Dagan and his family
lived in the USSR until 1950 when they relocated to Bat Yam, Israel. His family lived in Bat Yam and
operated a Laundromat. Dagan studied painting and sculpture at Tel Aviv University. In 1963, as is
customary in Israel, Dagan was conscripted into the Israeli Defense Forces at the age of eighteen.
Though he was initially set on joining the elite Special Forces deep reconnaissance unit, Sayeret
Matkal, Dagan ended up joining the infamous Paratroopers Brigade.
Dagan completed his three year compulsory service in 1966, but in 1967 was activated as a ... Show

Sharon, intent on destroying external threats to Israel, gave Dagan a mandate to hunt down the
enemies of Israel abroad. Dagan s first test came in November 2002 when an Israeli owned hotel in
Nairobi, Kenya was bombed by Al Qaeda. Dagan deployed his a squad of his elite hit team known as
the Kidon to find and kill the perpetrators. Dagan s team traveled from Kenya to Morocco to Iraq,
killing every major member of the terrorist plot at each stop. Following this enormous success, Sharon
gave Dagan free rein to eliminate threats to Israel abroad using whatever means necessary. In fact,
under Dagan, the Mossad tripled recruitment and used his connections with his allies in the Knesset to
increase funding to almost $350 million dollars annually, much of which went from traditional
intelligence and analysis to field operations and special tasks . Ehud Yatom, member of the Knesset
Subcommittee of Secret Services wrote, ... I can say this with complete authority: The Mossad under
Meir Dagan has undergone a revolution in terms of organization, intelligence and operations.
Dagan has focused Mossad s operations almost entirely on two objectives: preemptively neutralizing
anti Israeli terrorists, especially those of Hezbollah and Hamas and sabotaging Iran s nuclear program.
In both cases, according to former Labor Party Chairman, Amram Mitzna, Dagan has proved
successful: Israel is enjoying unprecedented happiness because of Meir. Dagan retired from his post in

A Brief Note On John Snow As A Surgeon And A Doctor
19th Century
John Snow was a qualified as a surgeon and a doctor in 1838. Dr Snow was interested in how cholera
spread through drinking water and observed that people who drank water and drank water from the
one company was most likely to come across this disease than the people who do not drink that
company s water. Dr Snow planned a map which he noted all the cases of cholera and then realised
that all the people who were ill were getting their water from the same and only pump, which it
supplied water that came from the sewage contained river Thames. People also used different pumps
to get water but did not get the infected. This is when Dr Snow established that was connection
between cholera and contaminated water. He identified all the aspects and also looked at the sources
of the infected water, and realised that all the contaminated water came from the broad street water
pump, so he went to the broad street water pump and took the handle of the pump and got rid of the
outbreak of cholera. (Stretch and Whitehouse 2010)

The Unnamables By Ellen Booraem
I recently got done reading a book called The Unnamables by Ellen Booraem, and I have read the
whole book. In that book, there were three main characters named Medford, Prudy, and Goatman. This
book is about an island, and everything on this island has a name. Things that are given a name, are
supposed to live up to that name and do nothing more or less than that name. For example, their island
is called Island, their city hall is called City Hall and so forth. People are also given names that they
are to live up to, like Baker, Pickler, Carver, and so forth. I think this book takes place in the past. The
reason I think this, is because the people in this story uses words like thou, thus, and phrases like I fare

High School Homework
Introduction
Traditionally, a high school schedule consists of seven or eight class periods, each one lasting 45 to 50
minutes. Since 1964, when Joliet West High School opened its doors, it has used a traditional seven to
eight period school day. 53 years later, problems are starting to arise with how the school day is laid
out. Recently, students are becoming more involved in sports, jobs, and extracurricular activities, and
the traditional schedule is making it harder for students to keep up with the work from seven different
classes. This task is especially difficult for students in honors and AP classes.
According to Allie Bidwell, an education reporter for U.S. World and News Report, the average high
school students spends about eighteen hours a week on homework. That works out to be about four
hours every night. In my experience, I average around two hours of homework every night, still a long
time spent on homework. At Joliet West, students are released from school at 3:15; if they go home
and start their homework right away, all their homework could be completed by eight o clock.
However, a majority of students do not have the luxury of having all night to work on homework.
With about half of students participating in a sport, many have practice after school until six o clock.
This pushes back their night, so instead of getting done with homework at eight, they will not finish
until ten o clock. A large portion of high school students experience this

New York Colony Research Paper
Have you ever visited New York? Have you ever wondered about what it was like to live there when it
was a colony? There are many facts that helped to shape New York to what it is. There are a few facts
that are very important to how New York has evolved into the great city it is. For one it was founded
in 1624 and was called New Netherland. Also later in time New Jersey split off from New York. These
are just a few of the many facts about the New York Colony. New York is an interesting colony with a
lot of history behind it. First, let us talk about the geography, natural resource and climate of New
York. New York has mountains along the eastern coast and going along the Canadian border. The

The Theory Of Egoism And Altruism
In this paper I will argue that selecting only one form of egoism is not enough to explain human
motives and that it takes a mix of several theories to explain it, specifically a mix of ethical egoism
and altruism, with the side note that intent is not important in this situation. The mix is important, as
any one theory seemingly fails to encapsulate the scope of human interactions. Pure ethical egoism,
the idea that each person should only try to help themselves, makes people out to be too greedy and
seemingly unwilling to help anyone at any point in their lives. Pure altruism, the idea that people
should use their abilities and advantages to exclusively help others, makes people too willing to
sacrifice what they have for someone else. If people were completely altruistic nothing would ever be
accomplished and eventually those advantages would become erased as people stop working to better
themselves. I also believe that the intent of the action is not important so the morality of the action
should be directly tied to the outcome, not the thought process of the person doing the action. All of
these ideas will be explained in more detail later in the paper. This paper will look at each of these
three factors individually, show why they are insufficient for explaining human motives on their own
and then explain how they can all work in conjunction to better explain human motives. This paper
will then go on to show how someone might disagree with this thesis by providing some

The Spread of Western Imperialism
In 1853, Western imperialism was at its height. It was spreading to several countries. The British
colonized India, the Dutch colonized Indonesia, the United States colonized the Philippines, and the
French colonized Vietnam. In 1929, the crash of the stock market brought a worldwide depression,
known as the Great Depression. The depression caused instability in many countries. International
commerce declined and tax revenues, profits, and personal income decreased. The Great Depression
especially impacted countries that were in need of raw materials. Between the time of 1853 to 1941,
Japan s culture and political structure changed anticipating westernization because they wanted to be
seen as equals to the Western countries. Japan also became more militaristic so that they would not be
seen as a victim of imperialism. Although Japan experienced some changes, Japan continued the
ideology of kokutai as a method for imperial advancement.
Japan s cultural and political structure changed from being a weak isolated nation to a modern
imperialist country. Before Japan westernized, it was under the rule of the Tokugawa Shogunate. This
was an agricultural economy with a population of 13 billion. Japan did not associate with any other
country because they believed foreign influence was a destabilizing factor. This resulted in
overcrowded farms and scarce minerals. In 1853, Commodore Perry came to Japan with big black
ships. The technological advancements of the ships shocked the

Getting a job done Essay
Getting a Job From I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings My room had all the cheeriness of a dungeon
and the appeal of a tomb. It was going to be impossible to stay there, but leaving held no attraction for
me, either.... The answer came to me with the suddenness of a collision. I would go to work. Mother
wouldn t be difficult to convince; after all, in school I was a year ahead of my grade and mother was a
firm believer in self sufficiency. In fact, she d be pleased to think that I had that much gumption, that
much of her in my character. (she liked to speak of herself as the original do it yourself girl. ) Once I

Dr. Camille Castorina
ECO 405 Economic Problems and Issues
Briefly describe the economic problem you have selected.
According to text in today s American economy, poverty is essentially an income distribution
problem. The U.S. economy generates enough income to go around so that no one really has to live in
poverty. But enough income does not go to everyone, and some people do live in poverty. Poverty is
concerned with the relationship between the minimum needs of people and their ability to satisfy those
needs. The difficulty with any definition of poverty involves the meaning of minimum needs and the
amount of money required to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Price discrimination occurs when people of different races or genders are forced to pay different prices
for the same good or service, provided the differences are not due to differences in cost of serving the
consumer. (Ansel M. Sharp, Evidence of Discrimination in Our Economy, 2010)
It may seem that racism and discrimination doesn t exist anymore in the US, with the election of an
African American as president, but discrimination still harbors here. To see discrimination first hand,
just travel south a few hundred miles where pickup trucks still have the Confederate flag painted on
their cabs and many houses have a Confederate flag flying, which a minority in the area views as
racist. Discrimination has played a huge role in shaping economies and creating poverty; women, for
instance, still reflect a small portion of engineering and higher income job percentages. A report from
http://www.yemenpost.net/23/Reports/20081.htm says that women have a 600 percent higher
unemployment rate and receive, at average, 13 percent less money than men do while having the same
occupations and getting the same work done. Discrimination still affects the poverty rate and
unemployment.
Design a proposed economic policy solution to the problem.
According to text, there are two approaches and only the government can really solve this problem to
easing poverty. First,

Comparing Power In Viva La Vida And The Count Of Monte Cristo
Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man s character, give him power, states 16
the president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. One who obtains power holds the ability to either
harm or enrich the world. In addition, it s easy to overlook the joys of life in which power blinds one
of.Therefore, with power comes a choice, rather one decides to display good or evil upon the mass of
mankind. In Viva La Vida and The Count of Monte Cristo, the writers use of symbolism and metaphors
convey the idea that power causes one to act in evil and cruel ways if not used responsibly. For
illustration,in Viva La Vida and The Count of Monte Cristo, through symbolism, the idea of power
being built upon lies and fictional identities.People ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Those who comes out victorious are feared by the common man, smirking as people bow down to
their every wish.Numerous world leaders take advantage of their power, considering themselves to be
above the law; this belief leads to careless cruelty and evil pursuit.Similarly, in The Count of Monte
Cristo, Dumas communicates I m sure the seed I ve sown hasn t fallen on the barren ground (266).
Dumas compares vengeance to growing a plant, a successful plot takes precision and

Genre, Plot, And Theme Of This Play
1) Discuss the genre, plot, and theme of this play.
The genre is a musical comedy. The rock music of the eighties moves the play through the story that is
centered in the Bourbon Room bar in Los Angeles. Most of the characters in the play used to be in a
rock band, currently are in a rock band or are trying hard to get into a rock band. The girls who wanted
or currently want to make in movies are bar waitresses and strippers. Big business wants to close
down the strip and develop a new business district. The classic rock hits and the main love interest
moves the story toward a happy and energetic ending.
2) Did you enjoy the production? Why or why not?
I enjoy comedies and I love many of the songs that were in the play so I could not help but laugh and
sing along at times. The production was very good overall. I was uncomfortable with the strippers.
The very suggestive dances and constant presence of the outfits were not necessary for the overall
story. The females playing the strippers did a good job and did deliver in lines and lyrics. The actors
did a very convincing job. The vocals were strong and the live rock band gave the show a punch. The
small stage and limited seating at the Virginia Samford Theatre were strengths. The actors were close
and you could see every expression. The size of the theatre helps pull you into the play.
3) Which actors did a convincing job? Describe their technique.
I was very impressed with the quality of Birmingham talent. Many of the main

The Growth And Growth Of The Uk Economy
Over the next five years UK economy is expected to see moderate to strong growth. Consumer
spending has been the main economic driver over the past three years, driven by rapid employment
growth, a falling household savings rate and supported by continually strong real estate market. This
trend is expected to persist in the shorter turn, helped by low inflation that is boosting real income
growth and continued historically low mortgage rates.
Despite medium term expectations that real consumer growth will moderate from 2.4% to 2% per
annum in 2017 2020 due to slower employment growth and a gradual rise in inflation, we do not
envisage this to have a big effect within central London, where unemployment rates are low and real

4 Industry Analysis
The health and fitness industry faced challenging economic conditions in 2010 11. As a result some
gym goers had to cancel their memberships or opt to exercise independently at no cost. Others
switched to exercise at the budget gyms, which do not require long term contracts and charge less for
their very basic services. As a result a number of gyms have seen sharp decline in membership
numbers, whilst newer budget operators have benefited from that. There are also signs that traditional
full spectrum gyms have suffered over the past five years as consumer preferences shifted towards
boutique studios, personal training and boot camp style operators.
The industry is expected perform better in the next five years. Demand for gyms is expected to
improve as healthier consumer sentiment encourages people to spend more freely on fitness activities.
Furthermore, growing awareness of the merits of regular exercise will continue to benefit the industry
as a whole. Consumer preferences will continue to shift towards

Gender Discrimination In Nursing
Today, most people perceive nursing as a women profession. Men who enter this field have been
looked at as outcasts. Many individuals feel that a man does not belong in a female profession. I
believe that statement to be untrue and unfair. The issue of gender discrimination in nursing is the
same as any other professions. The only difference is nursing is dominated by women, and men are
the minority fighting for equality. My goal in this paper is to help you understand why I m arguing that
men should be welcomed in the nursing profession. Gender or sex discrimination involves treating an
employee or a category of employees differently because of gender. Whenever this discrimination
affects the terms or conditions of employment, it is illegal. Gender based different treatment of
employees with regard to pay, title, position, hours worked and vacation time is generally considered
illegal and wrong. Just 2.7 percent of the working nursing population in the United States are men. To
understand why nursing is dominated by women we have to analyze the history. Male nurses may
belong, but there s still not many around. According to the U.S. Labor Department statistics, 6.7
percent of registered nurses were male. Gender discrimination in nursing exists because of prejudices
male students encounter in the classroom, in the workplace and with patients. Over the years
discrimination of males in the nursing has declined but just like racial discrimination it still exists. To
understand gender discrimination in nursing we must first understand the past. Nursing was found in
the 3rd century in ancient Rome and was dominated by men. Since the 20th century women have
dominated the nursing profession. Actually, in the 1897 American Nurse Association was founded,
and no men were allowed. The rule eventually changed in 1930, allowing men the right to be a nurse.
Are male nurses accepted by female nurses? I feel like if you are in the nursing profession and don t
understand that there is a shortage of nurses in the world then it shouldn t matter if they are male or
female. Every gender should be accepted. The require for male nurses is on a rise, partly because there
is a growing demand for nurses in general. That also

How? we will soon realize that most often, these technological advancements did not just poof into

Without this sooty powder our expressive fireworks that so vividly light up the night sky on the 4th of

significant a development as gunpowder, porcelain is a major invention of China. It is so extremely
sought after, that, porcelain has become intertwined in Chinese society and export industry. Porcelain
is up among the ranks of silk in terms of exclusivity and snootiness. This has become such a valuable
material, that the Chinese managed to keep the secret of production for centuries; this was the same

Adult Only Pool Case Study
Grey Oaks Adult Only Pool
Growing up, most summer days consisted of my mother waking up my brother and me early so that
we could be the first to arrive at the swimming pool in order to secure our chairs for the day. However,
most occasions we noticed that other people had the same idea. Once we finally found an ideal spot

the water. Each day the chaotic scene reoccurred. My mom frequently told me that the Grey Oaks

the main religion, it branches off into three denominations. These denominations include: orthodox,
conservative, and reform Judaism. Orthodox Judaism is then divided into modern orthodox and ultra
orthodox Judaism. Because Jews are often offended by the term ultra orthodox, they refer to
themselves as Haredi. An orthodox Jew is a person who follows the principles and practices of
traditional Judaism strictly. Modern orthodox Judaism is a orthodox practice that synthesizes Jewish
values and laws with the modern world, while an ultra orthodox, or Haredi Jew, distances themselves
from modern culture. Compared to orthodox Jews, conservative Jews adhere by the principles and
practices of traditional Judaism but allow some departure. Similar to orthodox Jews, conservative
Judaism once broke off into a branch called reconstructional Judaism. A reconstructionist Jew
followed the modern american movement that viewed Judaism as a progressively evolving civilization
rather than a religion during the late 1920s until the 1940s. This movement was based on the ideas of
Mordecai Kaplan, a rabbi, an essayist, and a Jewish educator. The final denomination is reform
Judaism. Reform Judaism is also known as liberal or progressive Judaism. Reform Judaism is the
abandonment of orthodox Jew aspects in order to adjust to modern changes in political, social, and
cultural life. Although the main goal of reform Judaism is to adjust to modern changes, the
denomination stills follows the moral lessons of the Torah. Because there are denominations that fit to
everybody s needs, it can be assumed that more people will convert to Judaism based on their desire to

Cultural Trends In Fashion
Trends in the fashion world are greatly influenced by social cultural changes. Social change deals with
any big change over time in behavior patterns and in cultural values. Fashion and clothing is more
than just what we wear but the way we choose to live our lives which relates back to culture. There are
three key sources in trends for fashion, high culture, pop culture, and low culture. High culture is
mainly about the visual kinds of art. Visual arts can range anywhere from paintings to architecture and
design. A designer is able to take note on a piece of art that inspires him or her to incorporate into their
clothing designs. Pop culture is highly influenced by celebrities who spend most of their everyday
lives in the mainstream. Pop culture influences the way we look. For example, TV shows that dress
the cast very fashionably such as the show, that was popular in the 80 s Dynasty to the 90 s into the
year 2004 the show Sex in the City, everyone wanted to dress like the protagonist in those popular TV
series. Subculture is local street movements such as hip hop and graffiti. Subculture is mainly seen in
surf and skateboard culture from the 70 s up until today.
If culture can influence the paintings we paint and the clothes that we wear, then it certainly does have
an impact on the poems we write. Poetry is an art form in which human language is used for its
aesthetic qualities. Poems are often written based on something a poem has dealt with or has
overcome in their

Ortega Gaona, CEO, founder, and Spain s richest man founded Zara in 1975. Zara s first store was
in A Caruna where the headquarters now lay and featured lower priced lookalikes of high end, popular
products selling to women, men, and children (Zara (Clothing) 2009). Beginning in the nineteen
eighties Zara began experimenting with differentiating the design, manufacturing and distributing
progression in order to condense lead times and respond faster to new trends. Gaona considered this to
be instant fashion. Instead of individuals, Zara used information technologies and groups of designers
to base its improvements in fashion. In 1998, the company began its international development
through Portugal s second city, Porto. By 1989 Zara entered the United States and by 1990 entered
France. Zara s international development expanded to Mexico in 1992, Greece in 1993, and Belgium
and Sweden in 1994. Zara continued to open stores around the world until there were stores in seventy
countries. This includes more than 519 stores in Spain, 116 stores in France, 87 stores in Italy, and 45

Plato´s The Symposium and it theme Compared to the French...
Life is pink, or so says Louis Armstrong s version of Edith Piaf s beautiful French song, La Vie En
Rose. Plato is arguably the most famous philosopher from Ancient Greece. The Symposium, one of
Plato s most famous works, is a brilliant piece of literature centered on a group of men telling their
own versions of what they believe to be Love. The Goddess of Love however, is the main focus of
Plato s work more so than the act of actually being in love. This becomes the men s main focal point
for the duration of their speeches. Both the story and the song, depict versions of love of Love that are
relatively common. In the soft tones of La Vie En Rose, the perfection of what being in love can
become is heard clearly. Believing that everything is wonderful and it could never change is a
symptom of the rose coloured glasses Armstrong is singing about. Socrates in believes that Love can
be both horrible and bad. There are people who believe that love is the solution to all of their
problems, and those who believe that there are bad aspects that come with being in love. Hundreds of
years apart, and these two men are trying to send different messages about the same subject love.
When you agree he is neither good nor beautiful, you need not think he is ugly and bad; he could be
something in between. (Plato, P. 23) Socrates is a character whom is famous in his own right. Though
it is often believed Plato is using him as a device to speak his own thoughts. Through the rest of the

Allusions In A Separate Peace
A Separate Peace by John Knowles about a boy named Gene, who returns to his boarding school after
graduating to remember the memories from his time there. The book takes place during the early years
of World War II, which greatly affects the lives of the main characters. Knowles utilizes many
symbols with religious undertones throughout A Separate Peace including Finny s fall from the tree,
Gene s fall into the Naguamsett, and Finny s unexpected death.
Finny fall from the tree on the bank of the Devon river is one of the many religious references in A
Separate Peace. One of the first memories Gene talks about when he returns to his boarding school,
Devon, is the act of jumping off of a tree and into the Devon River. Gene does this with his ... Show

Finny s leg shatters his leg when he falls from the tree that summer. During the winter session, the
other boys become suspicious about the mystery surrounding Finny s fall. Brinker Hadley and his
friends decide to investigate Finny s accident by holding a trial after hours, in the First Building.
When the truth begins to come out from the people present that day, and Finny does not want to hear
it. He becomes angry, not wanting to believe that his best friend could sabotage him this way. He
storms out of the First Building onto the marble staircase where every footstep can be heard, and
everyone inside the building heard his body fall clumsily down the steps. Finny s leg breaks again but
this time it is a much cleaner break...a simple fracture (180). This event to some extent is a religious
symbol because when Gene s loss of innocence causes the break it is disastrous but when no one
maliciously causes the break it is much cleaner. Finny undergoes the surgery to repair his leg but
marrow from his bone escapes and stops his heart. Gene says, I did not cry then or ever about Finny...
I could not escape the feeling that this was my own funeral, and you do not cry in that case (194).
Finny s death is a religious symbol because Finny dies through no fault of his own. Finny is pure with
a good heart and does not cause his own death. Like Jesus, Finny dies for others, and the things they
do out of spite

Explain The Three Categories Of Leadership Northhouse
Northhouse (2015p. 123) has identified three categories of leadership including administration skills,
interpersonal skills, and conceptual skills. The ability to be an effective supervisor is dependent on one
s ability to utilize both the relational and interpersonal skills. The supervisor s role in the Phoenix
House is multidimensional and requires both managerial and leadership skills to be successful. The
senior social worker manages the work of four social employees and two interns from the university
and implements weekly staff meetings as the primary form of communication. Within these meetings,
the concerns and procedures are being addressed, by the social worker. According to Northhouse

Western Influence In The Film Chilsu And Mansu
After watching Chilsu and Mansu (1988), the first thing that I ve noticed apart from this film being in
color was the economic development that took place in Seoul compared to the previous films that we
have seen. The image of Seoul in this film was more recognizable to today. I also found this film to be
relative modern. The film main female character Jina worked at Burger King (American
establishment) and is a college student. I think she is the first female character that we ve seen in
college and educated. There was also a lot of Western influence in this film. When Chilsu and Jina
went to the movie, they went to see an American film. When they went to the club, there was
American music playing in the background. Jina takes a contemporary ... Show more content on

affluent class. In the film, Chilsu and Mansu were both working class men in the painting industry.
They would paint buildings and billboards. Unfortunately, their job wasn t stable and they would have
difficulty finding work. Throughout the film, Chilsu seems to never have any money and Mansu and
his living situation was not the best. I felt that Chilsu was aspiring to be apart of the affluent class. He
essentially was living a double life. When he was with Jina he was an art student that was going to
America to study continue his art studies. He would spend money that he didn t have on taking Jina to
the movies, club, etc. When Chilsu was with Mansu, he was a painting assistant that never has money.
In one scene, Chilsu needed to go pee while working and he happened to see Jina and her mother
shopping. When they were looking at jewelry, he envisions himself in a suit introducing himself to
Jina s mother. In reality, he didn t go in to the jewelry store and when a man asks him what he was
doing there he just ran off. Towards the end of the film, Chilsu and Mansu went on top of the billboard
to vent at their frustration about being in the working class. The social realism of this film is worth
discussing. This film highlights the struggles that the working classes had to go through. It showed the
daily struggle on the common men in Korea in the 80 s with no

The Turing Test
Can a machine made by intelligent minds have an intelligent mind of its own? This was the question
that was being asked in the 1950s. A man by the name of Alan Turing decided to venture out and
analyze this question for himself by coming up with a thought experiment in which he called the
imitation game. This is a game that involves three players. One of each gender and one who plays the
judge to determine the gender of players A and B. A s job is to try and trick C the judge into guessing
the wrong gender. If C guess incorrectly, then A passes wins the game, or passes the Turing Test. Now,
if we were to imagine a machine to replace A s position in the game and now the judge has to figure
out who is human and who is machine. If the machine ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example if we were to turn our attention to the animal kingdom and look at chimpanzees, few
people would deny the notion that chimpanzees can think, but chimpanzees can t pass the Turing Test.
If we were to look at dogs, we can see that they are intelligent by being emotionally there for their
owners and being able to learn a myriad of different tricks, but they can t pass the Turing Test. Using
the standards that the Turing Test has laid out for us, this would mean that chimpanzees and dogs aren
t intelligent which seems to go against the grain of our common sense. Likewise, a thinking computer
could fail the Turing Get as well if the response that were laid out for it were explicitly non human or
it was not yet psychologically complex enough. We can now consider the idea that the Turing Test is
narrow minded because it only says an object is intelligent if things are able to hold a conversation
with a human. There are animals out there who clearly show signs of intelligence, but can not hold a
conversation with us, but that does not mean as a majority we consider these animals to not have any

The Pros And Cons Of Public Services
Under the NPM umbrella, public sector has also been experiencing a shift to greater competition. The
need to remove monopoly of service delivery and create contestability, through privatization, public
tendering, and term contracts, justifies the adoption of competition principle (Dunleavy 1994; Hood
1991). Insisting to do bureaucratic provision on public services instead of contracting them out,
knowing that private sector can deliver them better, it is believed would only force governments to
lose comparative advantages on price, efficiency, and effectiveness (Dunleavy 1994. p.49). This way,
governments are able to fulfil their responsibility in providing services and the financing, while
simultaneously stimulate greater competition among providers under market dynamics. However, it is
hard to instigate public service ethos in private parties. Therefore, the capacity of private entities to act
consistently with the public interest is greatly questioned in this scenario. Are concerns such as public
health and safety, environment sustainability, and social equity likely to be sacrificed underneath
market mechanisms? When power is shared with organizations which have business objectives apart
from government s goals, the fundamental issue is how to detect which missions they are carrying out.
Many public services being delivered by third parties are targeted for vulnerable sections of the
community which can pose a higher risk of potential abuse, neglect, exploitation, and

societies who dream of having a better life, or providing a better life for immigrants. This dream script
is the essence of the what if? game. In the dream script, Orgad highlights how celebrities are used to
help us to imagine how one could make it too. One example Orgad uses is Shakira. The Colombian
musician is the ideal when it comes to immigrants searching for a better life. She is popular, talented
and famous, but did not have to give up her cultural background. This dialectic construction of

Nightmare I wants migrants to imagine a live of people being afraid of you because the script says
people will associate an immigrant with violence. The second nightmare highlights the injustice,
extreme hardships, discrimination and racism that migrants experience. (Orgad, 2012) The migrants
create this script and its purpose is to show what life will actually be like. However, this second
nightmare has a hard time finding the light of media representations as it often gets misconstrued.
Orgad demonstrates this by saying, in today s environment of media representations, the lines between
the factual and the fictional increasingly blur. (Orgad, 2012) When looking beyond dreams and
nightmares, Orgad finds that immigrants are ambivalent and their imagination is incomplete. This
imagination is governed by uncertainty and confusion, a mix of hope and anxiety, desire for a better,
but unknown, future, and grief of over the loss of soon to become former lives. (Orgad, 2012)
Essentially, the fear of migration is real, as it is impossible to know where you will fall. Through a
growing amount of globalization, we again see representation grow. As they grow more people are
able to imagine. In this case, the more representations of a

The Feminine Mystique Analysis
Both the Victorian Era and 1950s and 1960s America featured inflexible expectations of a wife and
her views on marriage. Grant Allen, a Victorian essayist, in Plain Words on the Women Question in
1889, wrote, We ought frankly to recognize that most women must be wives and mothers: that most
women should therefore be trained, physically, morally, socially, and mentally, in the way best fitting
for them to be wives and mothers (Broadview Anthology 628). Essentially, Allen holds the belief that
all women are meant to serve as an asset to men, to complement men. Additionally, his use of the
word train connotes that women should be disciplined to fit this role, which betrays the lack of
equality between the sexes. He further argues that it goes against nature for women to desire more
than motherhood and wifehood. He chastises women who attempt to oppose their duty, instead of
boasting of their sexlessness as a matter of pride, they ought to keep it in the dark, and to be ashamed
of it (628). In other words, to be feminine is to mother children and to marry a man. Deviating from
this neatly structured plan for a woman s obligation is to become unfeminine. In America, Betty
Friedan, a feminist writer, wrote The Feminine Mystique in 1963. In her book, she rebels against the
traditional view of femininity. She coined the term which shares the title of her book as, The feminine
mystique says that the highest value and the only commitment for women is the fulfillment of

Silver Oak Winery By The Raymond T. Duncan
Silver Oak Winery
The Silver Oak Winery was established in 1972 by the Raymond T. Duncan and a friend, Justin Meyer
in the Napa Valley Region in California. Undoubtedly Duncan had always possessed an affinity for the
Napa Valley Region and he held a goal of establishing a winery in this charming area of California.
Because Duncan enjoyed no viticulture experience of his own, he relied on his friend Justin to plant
and manage the vineyards. ( Our Story. ) Although the Napa Valley is small in nature with a length of
around thirty miles long and only a few miles wide in distance, the valley is replete with numerous
diverse microclimates and soil types which leads to the cultivation of a variety of high quality wine
grapes. Many wines that are grown in this area include Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir. Sauvignon
Blanc, Zinfandel and Merlot. Napa Valley enjoys a dry Mediterranean climate which allows for a high
quality of premium grapes. ( Napa Valley American Viticultural Area (AVA). ) Raymond and Justin
conceived a unique idea for their winery. Rather than producing multiple varietals, they would focus
on a single wine Cabernet Sauvignon. Specifically, their goal was to produce a delicious wine from
the genesis and to achieve this goal, they committed to an extensive aging program of twenty five
months in American oak barrels, and fifteen twenty months of cellaring in a bottle. ( Our Story. ) As a
result, the first harvest from Silver Oak s Alexander

The Social Structure Of Fashion And Music
Fashion ... provides individuals with a key means through which to manage their identities in the
context of everyday life (Bennett, 2005, p.98). Through fashion, individuals are able to construct an
identity, and express that very same in order to confer and show their position in society. Their gender,
class, ethnicity, sexuality, subculture, generation, etc., are all part of their identity (Bennett, 2005). A
person s taste in e.g. fashion and music is also part of their identity. Groupings of people that share
similarities in identity, including but not limited to fashion and music, are called subcultures (Simmel,
1903; Veblen, 1934; Hebdige, 1979; DiMaggio, 1983; Bourdieu, 1984; cited in Alfrey, 2010). The

96). Further, individuals not only use their clothing to express their identity, but to also signal their
belonging or allegiance to certain groups of society (Rucker et al., 2009 cited in Bennett, 2005). These
aspects satisfy a person s need to socially adapt, whilst still allowing him to be a distinctive individual
within that group (Alfrey, 2010).
In everyday life, we are frequently confronted with representations of what is perceived to be normal ,
often referred to as mass culture or the mainstream (Thornton, 1995). Alfrey (2010) argues that the
way we chose to express ourselves mostly happens in relation to the perceived symbols of normality.
The apparent pressure of society towards individuals to conform to normality (Dowd and Dowd, 2003,
cited in Alfrey, 2010) results in what Barker (2012) describes as the conscious resistance of
subcultures against these pressures. On the other hand, Thornton (1995) believes that subcultures and
youth do not differ from the norm of society to resist the very same. She believes that sub and youth
cultures differ and distinct themselves through taste and social hierarchies. Research has found that in
past decades these patterns of individuals showing their membership to groups has not just happened
through shared likings of

Analysis Of The Novel Candide By Voltaire
In the eighteenth century, a French writer named François Marie Arouet, with the pseudonym Voltaire
wrote a novel called Candide. Voltaire was one of the leading writers of the Enlightenment. He was
born in Paris in 1694 and died in late May of 1778. Of all his works, Voltaire is best known for
Candide, a story of a young man called Candide who is a disciple of a philosopher named Dr.
Pangloss, who was himself a disciple of Leibniz. The story follows the adventures and travels of
Candide and his companions throughout Europe. Candide is an example of eighteenth century writing
style: with a lot of vicissitudes and crazy incidents. Moreover, in Candide, Voltaire gives a refutation
of Leibniz s theory that this is the best of all possible worlds.
All throughout Candide, crazy and unfathomable incidents occur. Towards the beginning of the book
for example, Pangloss, who follows Leibniz s theory, is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Greed is another example. When Candide himself, acquires a large amount of wealth, he is exposed to
the greed of the world as he is cheated many times out of his riches. Voltaire creates scenarios within
Candide in which people will go to any measure to attain wealth, even if it means hurting others and
Candide thus comes to the conclusion that this is another imperfection in this world that cannot be
explained through Pangloss s philosophy. Personal hardships are also a huge part of Voltaire s
argument. He introduces many characters whose lives have been nothing but hardships in order to
contradict Leibniz and Pangloss. One day, for example, as Candide and his valet Cacambo are
approaching the town of Surinam, they come across a negro laying on the ground wearing nothing but
his drawers and missing both his left leg and his right hand. Upon conversing with this poor fellow,
Candide and Cacambo learn about his terrible

##s And Feelings Of Heathcliff In Wuthering Heights, By...
After reading Wuthering Heights, read Remembrance by Emily Brontë and compare the actions and
feelings of Heathcliff in the final chapter of Wuthering Heights to the feelings of the speaker in the
final stanza of Remembrance. The novel Wuthering Heights and the poem Remembrance , both
written by Emily Brontë, feature protagonists who must cope with the death of their lovers, and in
many ways, the two characters are similarly affected by this. The actions and feelings of Heathcliff in
the last chapter in Wuthering Heights, however, stand in sharp contrast to the last stanza of
Remembrance . This contrast demonstrates the personal differences of the characters and how they
were affected differently by their losses. Heathcliff, the protagonist of Wuthering Heights, and the
speaker of Remembrance have different views on love (both before and after death). Consequently,
while Heathcliff embraces death in the final chapter to be with his love, the speaker of Remembrances
learns to stop dwelling in the past.
A crucial difference between Heathcliff and the speaker in Remembrance is that the two characters
have very different perspectives on love, death, and loss. In the final chapter of Wuthering Heights,
when Heathcliff is aware that he is dying, he is joyful for the first time since Catherine s death.
Furthermore, as Nelly notes, he constantly seems to be staring at something two feet away from him
with a mixture of pleasure and pain almost as if he is seeing an

Lab Report On The Reaction Time
Nicholas Durazo
KINE2202 section 002
Lab Report 1
Introduction
The reaction time (RT) of students was measured in the experiment to determine whether light or
sound stimulus initiates a quicker response time. The question of whether or not RT was related to
movement time (MT) was also challenged. Each student performed two test in random order; one
testing the reaction time of a red light stimulus, or visual reaction time (VRT); and the other testing the
reaction time of a beeping sound stimulus, or auditory reaction time (ART). The student completed the
VRT trial by simply receiving the stimulus and pressing a button. The student placing and holding
their hand on a button starts the ART trial. Once the student receives the stimulus (beep) they press the
adjacent button as fast as they can. The ART trial does not only include the data of the RT, but also the
data from the MT. Having previous knowledge that light travels faster than sound; one can predict that
VRT is faster than ART. The prediction that MT is independent upon RT can be made with the thought
that there are so many opposing variables that could affect the MT of an individual unrelated RT such
as old age
Methods
In the experiment, 80 students were randomly separated into groups of 2 to write down the data from
the test for the other individual. The VRT was measured by pressing a button once the student had
seen the stimulus. The reaction time data would simply show up on the screen once the student
completed

Julius Caesar Ethos Pathos Logos
Ethos, pathos and logos influence every part of our lives from the time we wake up to the moment we
fall asleep. These three advertising tactics are also the pillars of political speeches and other rhetorical
media. In the play The Tragedy of Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare, ethos, pathos and logos are
used to persuade many of the characters views on the conspirators plot and Caesar s subsequent death.
My independent speech, Tear Down this Wall, was given by Ronald Reagan on June 12, 1987 in
Berlin, Germany. This speech was given during the Cold War, which separated the Democratic from
Communist countries. Reagan s objective was to convince Mr. Gorbachev, the leader of Communist
Soviet Union to tear down the wall separating East and West Berlin. Both of these texts use ethos,
pathos and logos to convince their audience that their point of view is ... Show more content on

This is one of the most notable uses of rhetoric in Tear Down This Wall. Reagan states,t [that he] finds
in Berlin a message of hope, even in the shadow of this wall, a message of triumph . This quote is a
powerful example of pathos because it validated the dreams of so many people, the hope for freedom.
The wall itself not only was a military boundary, but it also separated families and friends. Reagan s
use of pathos was so powerful in this speech because of the hate and oppression the wall symbolized
for so many years. TRANSITION In Marc Antony s funeral speech he calls Caesar s stab wounds the
unkindest cut of them all. In this line he creates an emotional connection with the crowd. Through that
connection he is able to impart a feeling of distrust towards Brutus, furthering the crowds agreement
with his argument. Reagan uses a similar tactic in his speech, several times he addresses specific
groups of people in German. By speaking to the people in their native language Reagan wanted to
show that he respects their culture and is willing to spend time

  • 2. Meir Dagan was born in 1945 as Meir Huberman on a train... Meir Dagan was born in 1945 as Meir Huberman on a train between the USSR and Poland while his Polish Jewish parents were escaping the Holocaust to live in the Soviet Union. Dagan and his family lived in the USSR until 1950 when they relocated to Bat Yam, Israel. His family lived in Bat Yam and operated a Laundromat. Dagan studied painting and sculpture at Tel Aviv University. In 1963, as is customary in Israel, Dagan was conscripted into the Israeli Defense Forces at the age of eighteen. Though he was initially set on joining the elite Special Forces deep reconnaissance unit, Sayeret Matkal, Dagan ended up joining the infamous Paratroopers Brigade. Dagan completed his three year compulsory service in 1966, but in 1967 was activated as a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sharon, intent on destroying external threats to Israel, gave Dagan a mandate to hunt down the enemies of Israel abroad. Dagan s first test came in November 2002 when an Israeli owned hotel in Nairobi, Kenya was bombed by Al Qaeda. Dagan deployed his a squad of his elite hit team known as the Kidon to find and kill the perpetrators. Dagan s team traveled from Kenya to Morocco to Iraq, killing every major member of the terrorist plot at each stop. Following this enormous success, Sharon gave Dagan free rein to eliminate threats to Israel abroad using whatever means necessary. In fact, under Dagan, the Mossad tripled recruitment and used his connections with his allies in the Knesset to increase funding to almost $350 million dollars annually, much of which went from traditional intelligence and analysis to field operations and special tasks . Ehud Yatom, member of the Knesset Subcommittee of Secret Services wrote, ... I can say this with complete authority: The Mossad under Meir Dagan has undergone a revolution in terms of organization, intelligence and operations. Dagan has focused Mossad s operations almost entirely on two objectives: preemptively neutralizing anti Israeli terrorists, especially those of Hezbollah and Hamas and sabotaging Iran s nuclear program. In both cases, according to former Labor Party Chairman, Amram Mitzna, Dagan has proved successful: Israel is enjoying unprecedented happiness because of Meir. Dagan retired from his post in 2009 ... • 3. A Brief Note On John Snow As A Surgeon And A Doctor 19th Century John Snow was a qualified as a surgeon and a doctor in 1838. Dr Snow was interested in how cholera spread through drinking water and observed that people who drank water and drank water from the one company was most likely to come across this disease than the people who do not drink that company s water. Dr Snow planned a map which he noted all the cases of cholera and then realised that all the people who were ill were getting their water from the same and only pump, which it supplied water that came from the sewage contained river Thames. People also used different pumps to get water but did not get the infected. This is when Dr Snow established that was connection between cholera and contaminated water. He identified all the aspects and also looked at the sources of the infected water, and realised that all the contaminated water came from the broad street water pump, so he went to the broad street water pump and took the handle of the pump and got rid of the outbreak of cholera. • 4. The Unnamables By Ellen Booraem I recently got done reading a book called The Unnamables by Ellen Booraem, and I have read the whole book. In that book, there were three main characters named Medford, Prudy, and Goatman. This book is about an island, and everything on this island has a name. Things that are given a name, are supposed to live up to that name and do nothing more or less than that name. For example, their island is called Island, their city hall is called City Hall and so forth. People are also given names that they are to live up to, like Baker, Pickler, Carver, and so forth. I think this book takes place in the past. The reason I think this, is because the people in this story uses words like thou, thus, and phrases like I fare well . The main character, ... • 5. High School Homework Introduction Traditionally, a high school schedule consists of seven or eight class periods, each one lasting 45 to 50 minutes. Since 1964, when Joliet West High School opened its doors, it has used a traditional seven to eight period school day. 53 years later, problems are starting to arise with how the school day is laid out. Recently, students are becoming more involved in sports, jobs, and extracurricular activities, and the traditional schedule is making it harder for students to keep up with the work from seven different classes. This task is especially difficult for students in honors and AP classes. According to Allie Bidwell, an education reporter for U.S. World and News Report, the average high school students spends about eighteen hours a week on homework. That works out to be about four hours every night. In my experience, I average around two hours of homework every night, still a long time spent on homework. At Joliet West, students are released from school at 3:15; if they go home and start their homework right away, all their homework could be completed by eight o clock. However, a majority of students do not have the luxury of having all night to work on homework. With about half of students participating in a sport, many have practice after school until six o clock. This pushes back their night, so instead of getting done with homework at eight, they will not finish until ten o clock. A large portion of high school students experience this ... • 6. New York Colony Research Paper Have you ever visited New York? Have you ever wondered about what it was like to live there when it was a colony? There are many facts that helped to shape New York to what it is. There are a few facts that are very important to how New York has evolved into the great city it is. For one it was founded in 1624 and was called New Netherland. Also later in time New Jersey split off from New York. These are just a few of the many facts about the New York Colony. New York is an interesting colony with a lot of history behind it. First, let us talk about the geography, natural resource and climate of New York. • 7. The Theory Of Egoism And Altruism In this paper I will argue that selecting only one form of egoism is not enough to explain human motives and that it takes a mix of several theories to explain it, specifically a mix of ethical egoism and altruism, with the side note that intent is not important in this situation. The mix is important, as any one theory seemingly fails to encapsulate the scope of human interactions. Pure ethical egoism, the idea that each person should only try to help themselves, makes people out to be too greedy and seemingly unwilling to help anyone at any point in their lives. Pure altruism, the idea that people should use their abilities and advantages to exclusively help others, makes people too willing to sacrifice what they have for someone else. If people were completely altruistic nothing would ever be accomplished and eventually those advantages would become erased as people stop working to better themselves. I also believe that the intent of the action is not important so the morality of the action should be directly tied to the outcome, not the thought process of the person doing the action. All of these ideas will be explained in more detail later in the paper. This paper will look at each of these three factors individually, show why they are insufficient for explaining human motives on their own and then explain how they can all work in conjunction to better explain human motives. This paper will then go on to show how someone might disagree with this thesis by providing some ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. The Spread of Western Imperialism In 1853, Western imperialism was at its height. It was spreading to several countries. The British colonized India, the Dutch colonized Indonesia, the United States colonized the Philippines, and the French colonized Vietnam. In 1929, the crash of the stock market brought a worldwide depression, known as the Great Depression. The depression caused instability in many countries. International commerce declined and tax revenues, profits, and personal income decreased. The Great Depression especially impacted countries that were in need of raw materials. Between the time of 1853 to 1941, Japan s culture and political structure changed anticipating westernization because they wanted to be seen as equals to the Western countries. Japan also became more militaristic so that they would not be seen as a victim of imperialism. Although Japan experienced some changes, Japan continued the ideology of kokutai as a method for imperial advancement. Japan s cultural and political structure changed from being a weak isolated nation to a modern imperialist country. Before Japan westernized, it was under the rule of the Tokugawa Shogunate. The rock music of the eighties moves the play through the story that is centered in the Bourbon Room bar in Los Angeles. Most of the characters in the play used to be in a rock band, currently are in a rock band or are trying hard to get into a rock band. The girls who wanted or currently want to make in movies are bar waitresses and strippers. Big business wants to close down the strip and develop a new business district. The classic rock hits and the main love interest moves the story toward a happy and energetic ending. 2) Did you enjoy the production? Why or why not? I enjoy comedies and I love many of the songs that were in the play so I could not help but laugh and sing along at times. The production was very good overall. I was uncomfortable with the strippers. The very suggestive dances and constant presence of the outfits were not necessary for the overall story. The females playing the strippers did a good job and did deliver in lines and lyrics. The actors did a very convincing job. The vocals were strong and the live rock band gave the show a punch. The small stage and limited seating at the Virginia Samford Theatre were strengths. The actors were close and you could see every expression. • 14. Gender Discrimination In Nursing Today, most people perceive nursing as a women profession. Men who enter this field have been looked at as outcasts. Many individuals feel that a man does not belong in a female profession. I believe that statement to be untrue and unfair. The issue of gender discrimination in nursing is the same as any other professions. The only difference is nursing is dominated by women, and men are the minority fighting for equality. My goal in this paper is to help you understand why I m arguing that men should be welcomed in the nursing profession. Gender or sex discrimination involves treating an employee or a category of employees differently because of gender. Whenever this discrimination affects the terms or conditions of employment, it is illegal. Gender based different treatment of employees with regard to pay, title, position, hours worked and vacation time is generally considered illegal and wrong. Just 2.7 percent of the working nursing population in the United States are men. To understand why nursing is dominated by women we have to analyze the history. Male nurses may belong, but there s still not many around. According to the U.S. Labor Department statistics, 6.7 percent of registered nurses were male. Gender discrimination in nursing exists because of prejudices male students encounter in the classroom, in the workplace and with patients. Over the years discrimination of males in the nursing has declined but just like racial discrimination it still exists. To understand gender discrimination in nursing we must first understand the past. Nursing was found in the 3rd century in ancient Rome and was dominated by men. Since the 20th century women have dominated the nursing profession. Actually, in the 1897 American Nurse Association was founded, and no men were allowed. The rule eventually changed in 1930, allowing men the right to be a nurse. Are male nurses accepted by female nurses? I feel like if you are in the nursing profession and don t understand that there is a shortage of nurses in the world then it shouldn t matter if they are male or female. Every gender should be accepted. The require for male nurses is on a rise, partly because there is a growing demand for nurses in general. That also ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Plato is arguably the most famous philosopher from Ancient Greece. The Symposium, one of Plato s most famous works, is a brilliant piece of literature centered on a group of men telling their own versions of what they believe to be Love. The Goddess of Love however, is the main focus of Plato s work more so than the act of actually being in love. This becomes the men s main focal point for the duration of their speeches. Both the story and the song, depict versions of love of Love that are relatively common. In the soft tones of La Vie En Rose, the perfection of what being in love can become is heard clearly. Believing that everything is wonderful and it could never change is a symptom of the rose coloured glasses Armstrong is singing about. Socrates in believes that Love can be both horrible and bad. A man by the name of Alan Turing decided to venture out and analyze this question for himself by coming up with a thought experiment in which he called the imitation game. This is a game that involves three players. One of each gender and one who plays the judge to determine the gender of players A and B. A s job is to try and trick C the judge into guessing the wrong gender. If C guess incorrectly, then A passes wins the game, or passes the Turing Test. Now, if we were to imagine a machine to replace A s position in the game and now the judge has to figure out who is human and who is machine. If the machine ... For example if we were to turn our attention to the animal kingdom and look at chimpanzees, few people would deny the notion that chimpanzees can think, but chimpanzees can t pass the Turing Test. If we were to look at dogs, we can see that they are intelligent by being emotionally there for their owners and being able to learn a myriad of different tricks, but they can t pass the Turing Test. Using the standards that the Turing Test has laid out for us, this would mean that chimpanzees and dogs aren t intelligent which seems to go against the grain of our common sense. Likewise, a thinking computer could fail the Turing Get as well if the response that were laid out for it were explicitly non human or it was not yet psychologically complex enough. We can now consider the idea that the Turing Test is narrow minded because it only says an object is intelligent if things are able to hold a conversation with a human. There are animals out there who clearly show signs of intelligence, but can not hold a conversation with us, but that does not mean as a majority we consider these animals to not have any signs of ... • 29. The Pros And Cons Of Public Services Under the NPM umbrella, public sector has also been experiencing a shift to greater competition. The need to remove monopoly of service delivery and create contestability, through privatization, public tendering, and term contracts, justifies the adoption of competition principle (Dunleavy 1994; Hood 1991). Insisting to do bureaucratic provision on public services instead of contracting them out, knowing that private sector can deliver them better, it is believed would only force governments to lose comparative advantages on price, efficiency, and effectiveness (Dunleavy 1994. p.49). This way, governments are able to fulfil their responsibility in providing services and the financing, while simultaneously stimulate greater competition among providers under market dynamics. However, it is hard to instigate public service ethos in private parties. Therefore, the capacity of private entities to act consistently with the public interest is greatly questioned in this scenario. Are concerns such as public health and safety, environment sustainability, and social equity likely to be sacrificed underneath market mechanisms? When power is shared with organizations which have business objectives apart from government s goals, the fundamental issue is how to detect which missions they are carrying out. Many public services being delivered by third parties are targeted for vulnerable sections of the community which can pose a higher risk of potential abuse, neglect, exploitation, and ... The dream script is created by both migrants and host societies who dream of having a better life, or providing a better life for immigrants. This dream script is the essence of the what if? game. In the dream script, Orgad highlights how celebrities are used to help us to imagine how one could make it too. One example Orgad uses is Shakira. The Colombian musician is the ideal when it comes to immigrants searching for a better life. She is popular, talented and famous, but did not have to give up her cultural background. Nightmare I wants migrants to imagine a live of people being afraid of you because the script says people will associate an immigrant with violence. The second nightmare highlights the injustice, extreme hardships, discrimination and racism that migrants experience. (Orgad, 2012) The migrants create this script and its purpose is to show what life will actually be like. However, this second nightmare has a hard time finding the light of media representations as it often gets misconstrued. Orgad demonstrates this by saying, in today s environment of media representations, the lines between the factual and the fictional increasingly blur. (Orgad, 2012) When looking beyond dreams and nightmares, Orgad finds that immigrants are ambivalent and their imagination is incomplete. This imagination is governed by uncertainty and confusion, a mix of hope and anxiety, desire for a better, but unknown, future, and grief of over the loss of soon to become former lives. (Orgad, 2012) Essentially, the fear of migration is real, as it is impossible to know where you will fall. Through a growing amount of globalization, we again see representation grow. As they grow more people are able to imagine. In this case, the more representations of a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. The Feminine Mystique Analysis Both the Victorian Era and 1950s and 1960s America featured inflexible expectations of a wife and her views on marriage. Grant Allen, a Victorian essayist, in Plain Words on the Women Question in 1889, wrote, We ought frankly to recognize that most women must be wives and mothers: that most women should therefore be trained, physically, morally, socially, and mentally, in the way best fitting for them to be wives and mothers (Broadview Anthology 628). Essentially, Allen holds the belief that all women are meant to serve as an asset to men, to complement men. Additionally, his use of the word train connotes that women should be disciplined to fit this role, which betrays the lack of equality between the sexes. He further argues that it goes against nature for women to desire more than motherhood and wifehood. He chastises women who attempt to oppose their duty, instead of boasting of their sexlessness as a matter of pride, they ought to keep it in the dark, and to be ashamed of it (628). In other words, to be feminine is to mother children and to marry a man. Deviating from this neatly structured plan for a woman s obligation is to become unfeminine. In America, Betty Friedan, a feminist writer, wrote The Feminine Mystique in 1963. In her book, she rebels against the traditional view of femininity. She coined the term which shares the title of her book as, The feminine mystique says that the highest value and the only commitment for women is the fulfillment of ... • 32. Silver Oak Winery By The Raymond T. Duncan Silver Oak Winery The Silver Oak Winery was established in 1972 by the Raymond T. Duncan and a friend, Justin Meyer in the Napa Valley Region in California. Undoubtedly Duncan had always possessed an affinity for the Napa Valley Region and he held a goal of establishing a winery in this charming area of California. Because Duncan enjoyed no viticulture experience of his own, he relied on his friend Justin to plant and manage the vineyards. ( Our Story. ) Although the Napa Valley is small in nature with a length of around thirty miles long and only a few miles wide in distance, the valley is replete with numerous diverse microclimates and soil types which leads to the cultivation of a variety of high quality wine grapes. Many wines that are grown in this area include Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir. Sauvignon Blanc, Zinfandel and Merlot. Napa Valley enjoys a dry Mediterranean climate which allows for a high quality of premium grapes. ( Napa Valley American Viticultural Area (AVA). ) Raymond and Justin conceived a unique idea for their winery. Rather than producing multiple varietals, they would focus on a single wine Cabernet Sauvignon. Specifically, their goal was to produce a delicious wine from the genesis and to achieve this goal, they committed to an extensive aging program of twenty five months in American oak barrels, and fifteen twenty months of cellaring in a bottle. • 33. The Social Structure Of Fashion And Music Fashion ... provides individuals with a key means through which to manage their identities in the context of everyday life (Bennett, 2005, p.98). Through fashion, individuals are able to construct an identity, and express that very same in order to confer and show their position in society. Their gender, class, ethnicity, sexuality, subculture, generation, etc., are all part of their identity (Bennett, 2005). A person s taste in e.g. fashion and music is also part of their identity. Groupings of people that share similarities in identity, including but not limited to fashion and music, are called subcultures (Simmel, 1903; Veblen, 1934; Hebdige, 1979; DiMaggio, 1983; Bourdieu, 1984; cited in Alfrey, 2010). Further, individuals not only use their clothing to express their identity, but to also signal their belonging or allegiance to certain groups of society (Rucker et al., 2009 cited in Bennett, 2005). These aspects satisfy a person s need to socially adapt, whilst still allowing him to be a distinctive individual within that group (Alfrey, 2010). In everyday life, we are frequently confronted with representations of what is perceived to be normal , often referred to as mass culture or the mainstream (Thornton, 1995). Alfrey (2010) argues that the way we chose to express ourselves mostly happens in relation to the perceived symbols of normality. The apparent pressure of society towards individuals to conform to normality (Dowd and Dowd, 2003, cited in Alfrey, 2010) results in what Barker (2012) describes as the conscious resistance of subcultures against these pressures. On the other hand, Thornton (1995) believes that subcultures and youth do not differ from the norm of society to resist the very same. She believes that sub and youth cultures differ and distinct themselves through taste and social hierarchies. • 34. Analysis Of The Novel Candide By Voltaire In the eighteenth century, a French writer named François Marie Arouet, with the pseudonym Voltaire wrote a novel called Candide. Voltaire was one of the leading writers of the Enlightenment. He was born in Paris in 1694 and died in late May of 1778. Of all his works, Voltaire is best known for Candide, a story of a young man called Candide who is a disciple of a philosopher named Dr. Pangloss, who was himself a disciple of Leibniz. The story follows the adventures and travels of Candide and his companions throughout Europe. Candide is an example of eighteenth century writing style: with a lot of vicissitudes and crazy incidents. Moreover, in Candide, Voltaire gives a refutation of Leibniz s theory that this is the best of all possible worlds. All throughout Candide, crazy and unfathomable incidents occur. When Candide himself, acquires a large amount of wealth, he is exposed to the greed of the world as he is cheated many times out of his riches. Voltaire creates scenarios within Candide in which people will go to any measure to attain wealth, even if it means hurting others and Candide thus comes to the conclusion that this is another imperfection in this world that cannot be explained through Pangloss s philosophy. Personal hardships are also a huge part of Voltaire s argument. He introduces many characters whose lives have been nothing but hardships in order to contradict Leibniz and Pangloss. One day, for example, as Candide and his valet Cacambo are approaching the town of Surinam, they come across a negro laying on the ground wearing nothing but his drawers and missing both his left leg and his right hand. Upon conversing with this poor fellow, Candide and Cacambo learn about his terrible ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. ##s And Feelings Of Heathcliff In Wuthering Heights, By... After reading Wuthering Heights, read Remembrance by Emily Brontë and compare the actions and feelings of Heathcliff in the final chapter of Wuthering Heights to the feelings of the speaker in the final stanza of Remembrance. The novel Wuthering Heights and the poem Remembrance , both written by Emily Brontë, feature protagonists who must cope with the death of their lovers, and in many ways, the two characters are similarly affected by this. The actions and feelings of Heathcliff in the last chapter in Wuthering Heights, however, stand in sharp contrast to the last stanza of Remembrance . This contrast demonstrates the personal differences of the characters and how they were affected differently by their losses. Heathcliff, the protagonist of Wuthering Heights, and the speaker of Remembrance have different views on love (both before and after death). Consequently, while Heathcliff embraces death in the final chapter to be with his love, the speaker of Remembrances learns to stop dwelling in the past. A crucial difference between Heathcliff and the speaker in Remembrance is that the two characters have very different perspectives on love, death, and loss. In the final chapter of Wuthering Heights, when Heathcliff is aware that he is dying, he is joyful for the first time since Catherine s death. Furthermore, as Nelly notes, he constantly seems to be staring at something two feet away from him with a mixture of pleasure and pain almost as if he is seeing an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Lab Report On The Reaction Time Nicholas Durazo KINE2202 section 002 Lab Report 1 Introduction The reaction time (RT) of students was measured in the experiment to determine whether light or sound stimulus initiates a quicker response time. The question of whether or not RT was related to movement time (MT) was also challenged. Each student performed two test in random order; one testing the reaction time of a red light stimulus, or visual reaction time (VRT); and the other testing the reaction time of a beeping sound stimulus, or auditory reaction time (ART). The student completed the VRT trial by simply receiving the stimulus and pressing a button. The student placing and holding their hand on a button starts the ART trial. Once the student receives the stimulus (beep) they press the adjacent button as fast as they can. The ART trial does not only include the data of the RT, but also the data from the MT. Having previous knowledge that light travels faster than sound; one can predict that VRT is faster than ART. The prediction that MT is independent upon RT can be made with the thought that there are so many opposing variables that could affect the MT of an individual unrelated RT such as old age Methods In the experiment, 80 students were randomly separated into groups of 2 to write down the data from the test for the other individual. The VRT was measured by pressing a button once the student had seen the stimulus. The reaction time data would simply show up on the screen once the student completed ... • 37. Julius Caesar Ethos Pathos Logos Ethos, pathos and logos influence every part of our lives from the time we wake up to the moment we fall asleep. These three advertising tactics are also the pillars of political speeches and other rhetorical media. In the play The Tragedy of Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare, ethos, pathos and logos are used to persuade many of the characters views on the conspirators plot and Caesar s subsequent death. My independent speech, Tear Down this Wall, was given by Ronald Reagan on June 12, 1987 in Berlin, Germany. This speech was given during the Cold War, which separated the Democratic from Communist countries. This is one of the most notable uses of rhetoric in Tear Down This Wall. Reagan states,t [that he] finds in Berlin a message of hope, even in the shadow of this wall, a message of triumph . This quote is a powerful example of pathos because it validated the dreams of so many people, the hope for freedom. The wall itself not only was a military boundary, but it also separated families and friends. Reagan s use of pathos was so powerful in this speech because of the hate and oppression the wall symbolized for so many years. TRANSITION In Marc Antony s funeral speech he calls Caesar s stab wounds the unkindest cut of them all. In this line he creates an emotional connection with the crowd. Through that connection he is able to impart a feeling of distrust towards Brutus, furthering the crowds agreement with his argument.
