civil war. However, plantation owners had no intention of giving up their slaves in the early 1800s. A

In The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck, Wang Lung s life is affected by the land, making the land
important to him. As he makes money from the land s harvest, he becomes rich and does not work on
the land. Wang Lung has other problems to face because he forgets about how important the land is to
him. In the end, he realizes the land provides him with not only food and profit but also happiness. In
the beginning of the novel, Wang Lung is getting ready to go to the House of Hwang to meet O lan.
He brings her to his home on the farm and they get married. Soon they find out O lan is expecting a
baby. She gives birth to a son but quickly returns to the fields to work beside her husband. On New
Year s day, O lan presents her son to her old mistress at the House of Hwang. Wang Lung is proud of

parasite. They know that the land is important to him so they blackmail him into giving them what
