Equipment Safety Essay
Introduction
Contractors are responsible for the safety of their employees and the people near or at the work place.
Part of their job is to ensure that equipment, materials, and the work environment is safe as well as
make sure that the guidelines are being followed. In a construction site, it is important to be cautious
around heavy equipment and power tools. When operating equipment while working at a construction
site, protecting your body is very necessary. Creating a good work environment is also very important.
This means all of the construction workers work together and looks out for one another to make sure
the job is done right. These topics will be further explained.

Gloves should fit snugly.
Head Protection
Hard hats are used where there is a potential for objects falling from above and getting a bump to the
head from objects, or of accidental head contact with electrical hazards. Hard hats are replaced after a
heavy blow or electrical shock and should be maintained in good condition. Long hair should be tied
back so that it doesn t make contact with power tools and jewellery should be removed (just like in
class).
Heavy equipment safety
Crane Safety
Cranes are mainly used for lifting heavy things and transporting them to other places. Cranes are
restricted from operating within 10 feet of any electrical power line to ovoid collision. Many crane
fatalities occur when the boom of a crane or its load line contact an overhead power line. Load
capacities, operating speed and instructions are posted and are visible to the operator of the crane for
reference. Crane machinery and also other rigging equipment are inspected daily before using it to
make sure that it is in good condition. Guardrails, hand holds and steps are provided for safe and easy
access to and from all areas of the crane. Only properly trained and qualified operators are allowed to
work with hoisting and rigging equipment.
Forklifts
Forklifts have two prongs at the front that can be slid under heavy loads and then raised up for moving
and stacking materials. Forklift truck operators are capable of operating these

David Halberstam s Report
As an author of 21 books about topics such as war, politics, history and sports as well as receiving a
Pulitzer Prize, David Halberstam was a successful journalist and author. Halberstam s interest of
journalism started when he was writing for his school newspaper at Roosevelt High in Yonkers, New
York. When he was attending Harvard, he worked as the managing editor at the student run
newspaper, The Harvard Crimson. When he graduated from college with a degree in journalism, he
moved to West Point, Mississippi where he was a reporter for The Daily Times Leader. However, his
editor didn t approve of him reporting about issues of race and civil rights. Issues of race and civil

the story that earned him a Pulitzer Prize. During his time in Vietnam, It was his job to report back to
America about how the war was going on what was happening on the battlefield, whether the news
was good or bad. When he returned to the United States in 1964, he had received the Pulitzer Prize for
International Reporting for his coverage of the war. In the mid 1960 s, Halberstam went to Poland to
report about the Civil Rights Movement in Warsaw, where he ended up marrying an actress, Elżbieta
Czyżewska. But Halberstam s criticism of Poland s dictatorship at the time resulted in expulsion from
the country. After he and his wife went back to New York, he left The New York Times to focus on
writing books and magazine articles. The first book he had published was The Best and the Brightest

then, he had written 21 books about sports, war, politics and

Kate Chopin s The Awakening
Commonly explored throughout her works, the idea of marriage inhibiting a woman s freedom is the
driving force behind Kate Chopin s contextual objections to propriety. In particular, The Awakening
and The Story of an Hour explore the lives of women seeking marital liberation and individuality.
Mrs. Chopin, who was raised in a matriarchal household, expresses her opposition to the nineteenth
century patriarchal society while using her personal experiences to exemplify her feminist views.
Katherine O Flaherty, later Kate Chopin, was born to Eliza and Thomas O Flaherty in St. Louis,
Missouri on February 8, 1850 (Deter). Unfortunately, when Mrs. Chopin was four, her father died in a
train incident leaving her under the care of three independent widows her mother, grandmother, and
great grandmother (Deter). Mrs. Chopin s great grandmother, Victoria Verdon Charleville, directed her
education, giving her a taste of the culture and freedom allowed by the French that many Americans
during this time disapproved of . . . through the art of storytelling (Deter). Therefore, much of Mrs.
Chopin s success in writing about women pursuing morality, freedom, and political independence can
be attributed to Victoria. Furthermore, the teachers at the St. Louis Sacred Heart Academy, a school
Mrs. Chopin s father had previously enrolled her in, exposed her to Catholic teachings devoted to
creating good wives and mothers, while also teaching independent thinking ( Biography ).

Death Penalty Is Cruel And Unusual Punishment
The legal executions first started in California when it was under the Practices Act in 1851. Then in
February 14th 1872 it was put in the Penal Code. Capital punish in counties continued until an
amendment by the legislature in 1891 said that it could only happen in the State Prisons picked by the
court. The first state execution in California happens on March 3rd 1893 at San Quentin and the first
one in Folsom was on December 13th 1895. In the 1937 s the legislature decided that instead of
hanging people they were going to use lethal gas. This did not affect the people that were already
sentenced to be hanged and the last hanging was in December 3rd 1937 at Folsom and the last hanging
in Quentin was hold on May 1st 1942. Twenty five years after 1967 because of the United States
Supreme Court choices there were no executions. In 1962 the Supreme Court thought that death
penalty as cruel and unusual punishment. Because of this 107 people had their sentences changed to
something that was not death. In November 1972 nine months after they had this choice the California
electorate amended the state constitution overruled it. Then in 1973 the Supreme Court decided that
the death penalty was unconstitutional. The California legislation was passed in 1973, which meant
that the death penalty could only happen under certain conditions. These conditions were kidnapping
if the person dies, train wrecking if any person dies, assault by a life prisoner if the victim dies within

The Yellow Wall-Paper By Charlotte Stetson
Analysis of The Yellow Wall Paper Charlotte Stetson s writing immediately draws the reader in, and
makes them want to continue reading The Yellow Wall Paper as fast as they can so that they can see
what happens in the end. The fact that this story is formed like a diary and the narrator is very fervent
makes the writing in this story very unique, as not many others are like it. The narrator in this story is
very sick, and yet no one believes her, so for a bit she tries to believe that she is healthy. Believing that
she is healthy did not work and she starts to descend into madness; despite this, the narrator is still a
very relatable person. The diary like style that this story is written in gives a day by day view into the
narrator s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Those three main parts of the story really come together and show that the narrator may not be as
crazy as she seems. This story was written to resemble entries in a diary, and that was an amazing
decision because it gives the reader a day by day look into what the narrator is thinking. This really
helps the reader connect with the narrator more because it shows that her descent to madness was
quite Tobias 2 gradual and she was relatively normal for a time. The gradual decline of the narrator s
mental health was very well written. The nervous breakdown didn t just come from nowhere, there
were instances and thoughts that built up to that moment, which made the story even better. Another
part of the writing that really works for this story is the old english style it s written in. This style
really helps to place the story in the correct setting, which is very important because it shows that it
was written in a time where there was not a lot of information about nervous breakdowns or other
mental health problems. The fervent manner in which the story is written also helps to draw the reader
in. The narrator s writing is very passionate. The way the story is written makes

The Catcher in the Rye by J.D Sallinger, Questions and...
For this guided reflection paper, I observed two classrooms, the first was Mr. M s 10th grade, 3rd
period ELA class and the second was Mrs. L s 11th grade, 4th period ELA class. Both observations
were done on April 9th at the same high school. The focus for this paper was the teachers and specific
components of their lesson plans. Both classrooms were not only engaged in different reading
materials but also in different parts of their unit plan. Mr. M s class was just beginning their unit plan
on the novel The Catcher in the Rye while Mrs. L s class was finishing up their unit plan on the novel
The Scarlett Letter. Both classrooms had different, specific learning goals, activities, and assessments.
Mr. M s lesson was meant to introduce students to the novel The Catcher in the Rye and get them to
start working on their culminating journal project. One learning goal for the lesson can be found in the
AIM, How can observing our surroundings help us to understand our place in the world . One way Mr.
M addressed this learning goal was through the DONOW, by having the students observe their
surroundings and write about what they observed, the students become more aware of their
surroundings. This not only helps them understand and connect with the main character Holden, but
also helps them discover more about themselves as a person and understand their place in the world . I

COST OF PRODUCTION
IORDAN ELVIS CRISTIAN
2nd YEAR, GROUP 1.1
TIMISOARA, 2013
INTRODUCTION
Cost is a sacrifice of resources to obtain a benefit or any other resource. For example in production of
a car, we sacrifice material, electricity, the value of machine s life (depreciation), and labor wages etc.
Thus these are our costs. Costs are usually classified as follows: * Product cost(cost of production) *
Period cost
In this paper, we will analyze the cost of production with all what it involves. For the beginning, it is
necessary to know that the cost of production is classified into:
Direct materials: Represents the cost ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Consider the following hypothetical example of a boat building firm. The total fixed costs, TFC,
include premises, machinery and equipment needed to construct boats, and are £100,000, irrespective
of how many boats are produced. Total variable costs (TVC) will increase as output increases.
Plotting this gives us Total Cost, Total Variable Cost, and Total Fixed Cost.
Given that total fixed costs (TFC) are constant as output increases, the curve is a horizontal line on the
cost graph. The total variable cost (TVC) curve slopes up at an accelerating rate, reflecting the law of
diminishing marginal returns. The total cost (TC) curve is found by adding total fixed and total
variable costs. Its position reflects the amount of fixed costs, and its gradient reflects variable costs.
But, from an economical point of view, we cannot talk about fixed and variable costs without taking
into consideration the marginal costs. In fact, marginal cost is the cost of producing one extra unit of
output. It can be found by calculating the change in total cost when output is increased by one unit.
It is important to note that marginal cost is derived solely from variable costs, and not fixed costs. The
marginal cost curve falls briefly at first, then rises. Marginal costs, as the economists say, are derived
from variable costs (mentioned above) and

The Benefits Of Aerobic Exercise
Aerobic exercise has been studied and through those studies researchers have found that aerobic
exercise improves the cognitive abilities of young adults. Some of the cognitive abilities improved are
learning, memory, and decision making. Through aerobic exercise these cognitive abilities are
improved and sharpened. Aerobic exercise stimulates the hippocampus which is the area responsible
for memory and partly for learning. Another part aerobic exercise stimulates is the frontal cortex
which is the area responsible for decision making. Aerobic exercise also stimulates many parts of the
brain that together are responsible for our learning. Aerobic exercise combined with mental training is
what helps further the cognitive abilities of young adults. Through aerobic exercise the cognitive
abilities of young adults improve to new heights. Aerobic exercise has many beneficial effects in the
cognitive abilities of young adults. One of the big parts that aerobic exercise helps young adults with
is learning. Young adults performing aerobic exercise experience an increase in volume in the
hippocampus which helps benefit learning. The hippocampus is one of the parts in our brain
responsible for our learning. Aerobic exercise through studies has been shown to stimulate this part in
our brains. In Aerobic Exercise for New Brain Cells and Cognitive Performance the director states that
aerobic exercise can double the production of new brain cells in the hippocampus. This leads to new
brain connections that in turn improve the amount of information we can handle. One reason that
aerobic exercise helps stimulate the hippocampus is because it also stimulates BDNF production.
BDNF production is a nerve growth factor that boosts the growth of new brain cells in the
hippocampus. This leads to new brain cells being form which in turn improves cognitive abilities and
mood. While aerobic exercise does stimulate the hippocampus which boosts our learning, it is still
important to put in mental training so the new brains cells remain and don t die off. Through aerobic
exercise young adults will be able to handle more information which in turn will help increase their
performance in academics. Another cognitive ability that

The German Coast Uprising
Slavery was a part of life in the 1800s. Many northerners were opposed to the idea, and this led to the
civil war. However, plantation owners had no intention of giving up their slaves in the early 1800s. A
slave s life consisted of white owners, work, and whippings. This oppression eventually led to
outbreaks like Nat Turner s rebellion and Gabriel s conspiracy. The German Coast Uprising was the
biggest of these slave revolts. Charles Deslondes, the leader of the uprising, was born in Haiti in 1780.
He was likely part of the mass immigration from Haiti to America in 1809. After moving to Louisiana,
he became a slave driver at the Woodland Plantation owned by Manuel Andry. He was 31 years old
when he led the group of 200 to 500 slaves to battle in the German Coast Uprising. The riot took place
in the area that is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They attacked their owner Manuel Andry, killing him and stealing all his valuables. They then
continued to kill whites, burn plantations, and garner support. Three days into their revolt, the slaves
were attacked by local militias led by General Wade Hampton and Major Homer Virgil Milton.
Witnesses claimed that 66 tool wielding slaves were killed and 75 were captured during the fight. Of
the 75 that were captured, 18 were sentenced to death. A majority of the slaves involved in the fighting
were able to escape. The reason Deslondes started the insurrection is because he was tired of seeing
whites abusing their slaves unnecessarily. There is no doubt that he was inspired by the Haitian
revolution. Some might argue this by stating that he was the one beating them, because he was their
overseer. But did he really enjoy beating those he would have called brothers, because of their
struggles as a race? Charles Deslondes and the slaves who fought beside him were willing to, and did,
die for what they believed in. Sadly, the German Coast Uprising has been forgotten by many

A New Leader Of A Small Staff Essay
As City manager, my job is to lead and supervise a staff of 30 to match my current vision for our
organization going forward. During the hiring process I was informed that the city has a good
financial reputation, however, it has fallen on some hard times and its reputation has the possibility of
slipping if something is not done to alleviate this possibility. Upon agreeing to accept this position I
understood the importance in paying attention to detail and taking the time to assess the strengths and
weaknesses of the organization so that we can enhance capabilities and mitigate weaknesses. The
members that hired me were made up of a search committee who may not have first hand knowledge
of the actual tasks required to do the job successfully. As the new leader of a small staff it is critical to
first figure out the processes and structures required to accomplish the goals of the organization. A
lack of information often requires leaders to be flexible, resourceful, and innovative during the first
three to six months on new jobs. I intend on working closely with the city council to further help drive
our priorities as we continue to uplift the community. However, I will be very realistic about what we
can in fact accomplish within a six month time frame. Identifying key priorities will be the first step. I
will take ample time to understand the key problems and board member s goals. Once I have gathered
enough information, I will have a better understanding of the most

makeup of the city. For example, the racial breakdown by race is whites 68%, blacks 8%, Hispanic are

Antibiotics Essay
Antibiotics have played a major role in our society thanks to Sir
Alexander Fleming s careful observations in 1928. Without it, many lives would be in danger due to
infectious diseases.
Antibiotics are chemical substances produced by various species of microorganisms and other living
systems that are capable in small concentrations of inhibiting the growth of or killing bacteria and
other microorganisms. These organisms can be bacteria, viruses, fungi, or animals called protozoa. A
particular group of these agents is made up of drugs called antibiotics, from the Greek word anti (
against ) and bios
( life ). Some antibiotics are produced from living organisms such as bacteria, fungi, and molds.

This assures that the bacteria are either killed or reduced enough in numbers so that the body can repel
them. When too little antibiotic is taken, bacteria can often develop methods to protect themselves
against it . The next time the antibiotic is needed against these bacteria, it will not be effective.
Taking in Antibiotics.
To work against infecting organisms, an antibiotic can be applied externally, such as to a cut on the
skin s surface, or internally, reaching the bloodstream within the body. Antibiotics are made in several
forms and given in different ways.
Topical. Topical application means to a local area such as on the skin, in the eyes, or on the mucous
membrane. Antibiotics for topical use are available in the form of powders, ointments, or creams.
Oral. Tablets, liquids, and capsules are swallowed. The antibiotic is released in the small intestine to
be absorbed into the bloodstream.
Troches, or lozenges, are allowed to dissolve in the mouth, where the antibiotic is absorbed through
the mucous membrane.
Parenteral. Applications outside the intestine are called parenteral.
One form is an injection, which can be subcutaneous (under the skin), intramuscular (into a muscle),
or intravenous (into a vein). Parenteral administration of an antibiotic is used when a physician
requires a strong, quick concentration of the antibiotic in the bloodstream.

Winnie s Women Struggle
Drawing, crafting, and cutting the Chinese characters took longer than what was predicted, mainly due
to the delicate care and precaution I committed. The reason why I did this was because I was trying to
configure it in such a way that the characters display a delicate and refined structure. Although the
characters translated to Women Struggle , I also incorporated some details that represent society s
status quo for women. For instance, for the phrase women should look charming and act perky , I
made sure that the slices and cuts were somewhat precise. Despite trying so hard to perfect the cuts, it
was just too difficult to master, but that is also another meaning. With the little slivers of paper jutting
out, it demonstrates that women ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

society favors men over women, leaving females mistreated and somewhat abandoned. In addition, it

pictures of the Chinese activity for women called foot binding. This excruciating act was solely for
women to become aesthetically pleasing and follow the societal norm of a frail and tiny female body.
The gruesome images should grant the reader an emotion of disgust and apathy towards society,
motivating them to seek change as well. The third artifact is the poster in which the artifacts will be

why the title will be in Chinese is because it should look very smooth, sleek, and pretty much like how
society wants their women. As a note to the reader, please keep in mind that this whole project is
allegorical, and they should try to sympathize with the struggle that women faced at the time. It will

Challenges In Behold The Dreamers
Not only do adolescents face challenges in the city of Woodburn, but so do parents and any immigrant
individual. In chapter twenty of Behold the Dreamers Jende and Neni get in argument because Liomi
heard his mom on the phone saying that they were returning to Cameroon, the country they escaped
from for a better opportunity. Jende gets very upset with Neni as he says the following is that what
you think? You think we should tell a child his father might be deported? You want Liomi to know
what s happening to me? (Mbue, 2016, p. 128). Jende s and Neni s fear of immigration is definitely a
fear many immigrant families have always had in the city of Woodburn for many years. these families
are scared to be separated and to come to an end in their American Dream . Neni and Jende fear for
their son because they want him to get a good education and to grow up in a country with
opportunities. Their dream is for Liomi to not grow up in a poor city like they did. Their dream is also
to become someone in life and to own their own house, which is something many families in the city
of Woodburn are also eager for.
The life of Jende and Neni in the novel Behold the Dreamers is very similar to the life in the city of
Woodburn, which I think is interesting because Jende and Nenis life experience took place in a much
bigger city than Woodburn New York city. But, the dreams, expectations, issues, and fears are very
similar between both cities and families. As the city of Woodburn and

Analysis Of Blood In The Hills
Based off glancing at the title alone, the reader is immediately aware of what to expect upon opening
the publication. Blood in the Hills: The Story of Khe Sahn, the Most Savage Fight of the Vietnam War,
written by Robert Maras, with the assistance of Charles W. Sasser, tells the story of Maras, a Vietnam
veteran, and his experiences during the war. From his combat landing on Red Beach, to his departure
from the Demilitarized Zone, also known as the DMZ, Robert Maras describes in great detail the joys
and sorrows of his time in Vietnam. The book also exhibits the development of the average Marine,
and the mental and physical toll the fighting at Khe Sanh takes on each individual. Throughout the
memoir, the warrior creed of Semper Fidelis is repeated an abundance of times, meaning always
faithful, and symbolizing the US Marine Corps determination to fight for their beloved country (Maras
3). This saying was especially influential during the times Bob Maras was subjected to viewing his
comrades perish before him, as he could only hope he would survive the countless battles in the jungle
terrain of Khe Sanh. Blood in the Hills is a powerful read for those engrossed with not only the
corporeal aspect of war, but fascinated in learning about warfare from a psychological perspective.
Critically speaking, the authors are somewhat qualified to discuss the topic at hand, but Maras, the
protagonist, is by no means a professional historian on the Vietnam War. In fact, the same

Tissue Engineering Scaffold
Preliminary Data 3: Tissue engineering scaffolds comprised of decellularized myocardial extracellular
matrix effectively emulate the natural cardiac environment. In order to best reconstruct the damaged
tissue of a heart following myocardial infarction, the chemical and biological cues that dictate cell
recruitment and differentiation in the native tissues are required. Each human tissue contains its own
specific combination of proteins and proteoglycans within the ECM to facilitate this process, so it
serves that scaffold material obtained from the heart would best serve to reconstruct cardiac tissue
(Singelyn et al. 2009). Modifying the scaffold into an injectable form would allow for the noninvasive
delivery of the therapy directly to the affected site. Previous studies on the gelation of a decellularized

I firmly believe that my pursuit of graduate studies will allow me to further immerse into the
refinement of my craft as an opera singer. I also aspire to achieve greater fluency in both French and
German and believe that graduate studies will provide me with both the time and the resources to do
so. I want to continue learning and polishing my artistry so that I become more effective and inspiring
for my audiences. My other motivation for pursuing graduate studies is to build a strong network of
colleagues and mentors within my field. I believe that my studies at Eastman will assist me in

Susan Bordo Never Just Pictures Summary
In the article Never Just Pictures, the author, Susan Bordo, addresses the cultural reasons behind the
rise in eating disorders. She asserts that modern media and advertising campaigns have played an
integral role in this increase. Though unfortunate, the media s focus is not on the well being of its
viewers, but on the level of cash flow they provide. The advertising moguls use their agencies as
double edged swords; they will make ads for McDonalds, then go in the next room and conduct a
photo shoot with a six foot two, eighty pound woman. The world of advertising needs to realize their
work is being seen by millions of people and is affecting some of those people in extremely negative
ways. The author of this article begins her analysis of the rise in eating disorders by acknowledging
America s obsession with being the ideal weight. From an extremely young age, American children
are being taught that women in movies and on the covers of magazines possess the ideal figure. The
author states Children are being taught...being fat is the worst thing one can be (Bordo 1). This is
disturbing to say the least. There many attributes worse than being overweight: dishonest, cruel, and
murderous to name a few. Bordo also uses an example in the first paragraph of her essay that is
appalling. Alicia Silverstone, the lead role in Clueless, was completely bombarded with insults about
her weight, though she had only gained a few pounds since her starring role. The advertisers did

The Questionnaire And The Questionnaires And Review Of...
This study employed the survey research method, and used the technique of interviews to complement
the questionnaires and review of documentary sources. The questionnaire was structured to a five
point Likert scale, where strongly agree was assigned 1 point, agree was assigned 2 points, neutral was
assigned 3 points, disagree 4 points and strongly disagree 5 points. Descriptive study design was
adopted in conducting this research study. Descriptive research is the process of collecting data so as
to test hypotheses or in order to answer questions regarding the current status of the variables or
subjects in the study which is very useful as the respondents were given enough time to respond to the
questionnaires without any interference whatsoever or manipulation (Williams, 2007; Ary et al.,
2009). The descriptive study included survey and fact finding enquiries. This is the most preferred
research technique as it provides a more generalized outcome of the study population. Thus this
design was considered most useful for generalizing the research findings (Sindhu, 2012).
The literature used in this study was obtained from original articles retrieved from online databases,
including but not limited to the EMBASE database, the Cochrane Library and the Psych INFO. The
search for the articles was conducted by using the keywords police , policing , racial discrimination ,
police recruitments , academic grades and minority groups to make sure that the search included all

Samuel Beckett¨s Novel Molloy and Its Particular Style,...
There s no question Samuel Beckett was deeply influenced by the avant garde style of fellow Irish
novelist James Joyce when writing Molloy. Both Beckett and Joyce allude to the classics (Dante s
Purgatorio and Homer s Odyssey, respectively) and both extensively employ interior monologue to
often similar effect. Even so, Beckett, ever aware of the shadow cast by his former mentor, also
attempted to eschew Joycean tendencies in his works, as demonstrated in Molloy. Here, not only does
Beckett entirely deny readers the luxury of context, he deconstructs the very fundamentals of novel
and narrative. Distinctly metafictional in form, Molloy self consciously underlines its own artificiality
and, on a universal level, that intrinsic to fiction itself. Like the titular allusion of Joyce s Ulysses, the
two protagonists in Molloy also embark on a voyage of sorts, albeit the nature of which is even more
so internalized. As a result, there s not much by way of plot or setting, which remain intentionally
hazy. Still, the novel moves, sometimes at a dizzying pace, in part to its frequent digressions and
elision of so many vital answers: Are Molloy and Moran the same character? Is it possible Molloy
may not even be a person altogether but rather an alter ego of Moran? Is Molloy a state of mind? What
exactly does it mean to be searching for Molloy ? These questions stem from the novel s vague
definition of physical space and time, leading some readers to interpret the novel s second

Big Bang Theory Vs. Old-Earth Debate
This class has been very informative in obtaining a better understanding of the young earth/old earth
debate. I enjoyed the lectures, readings and videos and gathered enough information to share with the
next individual. There are a few questions I have and would like to get further information on. One
question is why is there a comparison of the Big Bang theory and evolution to God s creation of the
earth. Why does the world have two different views of how the world was created? From my
understanding the Bible defines exactly how the world was created in the book of Genesis yet some
individuals still challenge and find the words of the bible to be untrue. Young earth vs. old earth is
described as young earth being created by God in six twenty four

Swimming Pools Budget Cut
Although nobody likes to cut the budget, I feel our budget can be cut in many different ways. We need
to split the budget of the swimming pools in half because six public pools is a lot for one town and it s
too expensive. We need to cut some of the youth programs like the high school incentive programs
because students shouldn t have to be rewarded to get good grades they should just get them. We
should only have two additional police officers instead of three because two is enough for this city and
we don t want to go over budget and have too many police officers. I decided that we should have
three public swimming pools instead of six. Six is too many pools and we could use the money on
something else more important than swimming. The

Mapp Vs. Ohio State
Mapp vs. Ohio State(1961) Background: In the Mapp vs Ohio state court case, the issue disputed was
when the appellant Dollree Mapp was convicted of possessing obscene materials after an illegal police
search of her home for a fugitive. During the year of 1961, Ohio police were looking for a criminal
accused of a bombing and had been told that he was hiding in Dollree Mapp s house. Police acted
quickly and came to her house but when she didn t answer the door, police officers forced themselves
inside. Dollree demanded to see the police s search warrant once having spoken to her attorney but
police didn t have one so they held a piece of paper to disguise that it was a warrant when it really
wasn t. Dollree grabbed the paper and when trying to read it, she was then handcuffed on the ground
and police continued to search her house (Landmark cases). During the search, officers found
pornography and other materials that were against Ohio State law in her basement. As a result, Dollree
was arrested, found guilty, and sentenced to 1 to 7 years in the Ohio Women s Reformatory. Dollree
felt that justice was unfair so she consulted with her attorney. She appealed her conviction on the basis
of freedom of expression (Oyez). Dollree s lawyers argued to the Supreme Court of Ohio that she
should never have been brought to trial because the material evidence resulted from an illegal
(warrantless) search and how it was illegally obtained. In its ruling, the Supreme Court of Ohio

to become more marketable by extending his demographics. 2. My opinions are that he has great
ambition for the sport and is going to be great on and off the hill, he snowboards with such grace, and
that by winning the gold in the Olympics hw will be more marketable. 3. My conclusions are Findings

twelve years, Volcom for five years, Oakley for five years, Birdhouse for four years, Adio for two
years, Mt. Dew for three years, Playstation for five years, and Target for four years. White s next steps
will be working with brands that will put him with a much wider audience. One of the most important
deals he is working on is an agreement to create a signature snowboarding video game with Ubisoft.
This will give White a chance to reach beyond his core demographics. Shaun has the ability to bring
his name and stamp and signature and take snowboarding gaming to the next level, Sawabini said.
(Streets Smiths Sports Business journal, pg.33) Whites work off the slopes may be the leading factor
that extends his demographics. Opinion In my opinion I think that White is an outstanding athlete and
extremely talented. He has great ambition and love for the sport, which gives him the urge to do better
every time his board hit s the snow. I think we are going to continue to see white on top for years to
come. He snowboards for himself not his parents or his sponsors, which adds to his grace on the hill.

Documentation In Childcare
baxterchildcare.com.au Developmental Records and Child Progress Reports: Why Are These
Important in A Child Day Care?
Educators even in a childcare centre must keep developmental records and child progress reports in
order to bring out the best in the children in their care daily. They need this documentation for a
number of reasons that range from evaluating the efficiency of the centre s teaching methods to
sharing detailed information with the parents about the progress of their children. A childcare centre
should make record keeping an integral part of its routine to ensure that all documentation is up to
date.

We say tricky since not all children progress at the same rate and at times, some parents become upset
at the thought that their children are behind in development. A skilled educator will be able to allay the
fears of these parents through showing the proper documentation and guide them on how to help their
children through the difficulties they may have in the developmental process.
Evaluating Teaching Methods
When educators in a childcare centre can examine their written documentation on each child, they are
able to realize which methods and programs are a success and the ones that need improvement.
Through this, the centre can offer the best possible programs and teaching methods to fit their children
s needs and circumstances. Without proper record keeping, the centre would have no way to re
examine its actions.
Childcare Centres, Parents and Children Benefit From Documentation
When childcare centres make the appropriate entries into children s developmental records and
progress reports, all parties benefit from this effort. Childcare centres can continually improve their
operations. Parents receive accurate updates on their children s progress. Children receive the best
care and training possible from the educators at the

Art Analysis Of The Calling Of St Matthew
This essay will analyze, The Calling of St Matthews, an oil on canvas painting made between the
years of 1599 1600 by the artist, Caravaggio. Descriptive details of this painting will follow, which
will allow an in depth look into the elements and principles of design that are evident in this
Caravaggio s work. The Calling of St Matthew illustrates a religious scene where Jesus initially
encounters Saint Matthew.
Most striking is the group of well dressed young and old men who have gathered around a table
counting money. One young man has a rapier at his side. Perhaps they are gangsters sitting in a bar
gambling. An upright gentleman in dark attire, punctuated by red sleeves, stands in the shadows, his
cheekbones red and defined. The glint of a halo adorns him and provides religious iconography. Jesus
points his hand at a bearded gentleman sitting amongst his friends, Saint Matthew. Sunlight cuts the
room in half and catches Matthew s face. He looks both surprised and guilty, but the pointing leaves
Matthew confused, so he points to himself as if to say, Oh, are you looking for me? On the far left of
the table, a young accountant is absorbed in counting his coins; an old man in spectacles joins his side.
A boy in yellow with a prepubescent face, looks upon Jesus with an air of Who is this fellow? An old
man with a cane, points his hand too at Matthew as if to question, Are you sure he is a Saint? The
focal point bounces between Jesus and Matthew; his gaze and the

Westerns often stress the harshness of the wilderness and frequently set the action in an arid, desolate
landscape. Specific settings include isolated forts, ranches and homesteads; the Native American
village; or the small frontier town with its saloon, general store, livery stable and jailhouse. Apart from
the wilderness, it is usually the saloon that emphasizes that this is the Wild West: it is the place to go

San Elizario
San Elizario is a beautiful small town, with a loving and united community. It has a historical
background in which it makes it even more special. We see many tourists hang at the Placita where the
chapel is located but I am sure the tourists are aware of the surroundings, like the houses, and the
streets, they are not pleasurable to watch. There is countless of trash around the streets, also including
the houses front yards. I come to propose if we put more trash cans all around town, there would be
less littering. To increase sanitation, we can set up community walks at least once a month, to clean
our yards and the streets around the area we live in. As a result, the entire community will benefit by
this cleanup project. For this to happen, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Scarlett Letter, And The Crucible
1. Identify (and define) the genre of this novel.
It is leaning more on historical fiction. In historical fiction, writers will incorporate past events or
people into their fictitious stories. Though the characters and the story are fiction, this lifestyle and
rule was far from fiction. It is even believed that even though Hester Prynne was fictitious there was a
similar scandal that Hawthorne was referring to. The life of the Puritans has been a subject of interest
for years, with works of literature such as The Scarlett Letter, and the Crucible that depict this time
period of extreme conservatism and harsh punishment. After further analysis and research it has come
to my attention that the Scarlett Letter is actually categorized as a Gothic Romance novel. It shouldn t
be that difficult to believe since Pearl was the result of passionate love affair. I think what sets it apart
from other romance novel is it isn t like other novels.
2. Provide an author biography (as it pertains to the novel).
Nathaniel Hawthorne was born on July 4, 1804 in Salem, Massachusetts
John Hathorne, was one of the judges who oversaw the Salem witch trials. Having learned about this,
the author probably added the W to his surname in his early twenties in an effort to dissociate himself

Comparing The Painting Dante And The Three Kingdoms
The painting Dante and the Three Kingdoms by Domenico di Michelino corresponds to the three
world of the Christian afterlife in Dante s Divine Comedy . Dante stands in red robed colossus in front
of the city of Florence. Behind him, the art shows the three worlds of Christian afterlife, which are the
heavenly paradise, hell, and Mount Purgatory, thereby revealing the celestial spheres. The painting
dates back to around 1465. On the left side, it shows the sinners getting down to hell and souls appear
being burnt by the hellfire. Dante says does as they walked inside hell, he noticed famous people, who
were great but still went to hell.

Each terrace symbolize a different kind of sin. One has to pass through all the levels to make sure that
the sins are cleansed so as to get to heaven. On top of Purgatory there is the moon, which according to
the artist, represents the heavenly paradise. I also, shows Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden,
representing the earthly paradise. The seventh terrace is immediately at the top; it faces flames and
strong winds from below. The level represents the lustfulness. Some of the sinners appear to move in
the fire with the guilt of going against the marriage virtues, while others are motionless, depicting the
lust. The sixth terrace represents the gluttony the sin of overeating. There is an apple tree in the center
of the terrace and a steam that flows on top of the tree from the mountain. The sinners appear starved
due to the aroma of the apple, and they cannot help the scent of the ripe apples and the wate. They
have to feed on them only to make them hungrier.
The fifth terrace show people lying on the ground with their faces looking down. It shows that they
repenting from the sins of involving themselves in earthy things. Dante on his way felt the trembling
of Mount Purgatory, a sign of sinner being released from the burden of their sins, and this brought
about praising by everyone. This level represents the sin of extreme greed, and it is believed to possess
the worst punishment. On the

Essay On Raw Gley Soil
The Main Soil Types of the UK
Terrestrial Raw Soils
These are soils consisting predominantly of unaltered mineral material that have no surface/sub
surface horizon attributed to soil forming processes (unless buried under a 730cm thick deposit from
the Holocene) (Avery, 1980;). These soils do not normally have continuous vegetation cover (Avery,
1980). They occur in very recently formed soil and may have a superficial organic or organo mineral
layer less than 5cm thick. Sometimes they have a buried horizon below 30cm of depth. (Thompson,
2007; Jarvis, 1984).
Raw Gley Soils
Raw gley soils are found within mineral material that has remained waterlogged since deposition
(Thompson, 2007). The soils are missing a distinctive top soil and contain gleyed subsurface horizons
(Avery, 1980). They also contain a mineral horizon which starts at 20cm and extends below 30cm
(Avery, 1980). Jarvis (1984) also states that the soils are distinctly mottled above 40cm depth. Raw
gley soil types are mostly confined to intertidal flats (Avery, 1980) or areas that represent various
stages in the development of salt marshes (Thompson, 2007).
Lithomorphic Soils
Contain a distinctive top soil that is humose or peaty and a substratum starting at 40cm in depth which
has been altered little (Avery, 1980; Buol, 1997). The soils do not contain a disturbed surface layer, the
B horizon is not podzolic, weathered or argillic (Avery, 1980; Buol, 1997) and the soil profile is
shallow (Ashman Puri, 2002).

Comedy in I Henry IV and II Henry IV
In I Henry IV and II Henry IV, William Shakespeare brings together drama and comedy to create two
of the most compelling history plays ever written. Many of Shakespeare s other works are nearly
absolute in their adherence to either the comic or tragic traditions, but in the two Henry IV plays
Shakespeare combines comedy and drama in ways that seem to bring a certain realism to his
characters, and thus the plays. The present essay is an examination of the various and significant
effects that Shakespeare s comedic scenes have on I Henry IV and II Henry IV. The Diversity of

(II Henry IV, II. iv. 113 122)
The scene is filled with bawdy references and second meanings, meanings which the audience would
undoubtedly find uproarously funny. Hal, too, often speaks this language of the lower classes,
especially when chiding Falstaff: These lies are like the father that begets them gross as a mountain,
open, palpable. Why, thou clay brained guts, thou knotty pated fool, thou whoreson obscene greasy
tallow catch (I Henry IV, II. iv. 224 227). The language Shakespeare uses in the tavern scenes is
certainly different from the more solemn and courtly language found in the plays more dramatic
moments, as in Hal s gallantry towards Hotspur upon the latter s death:
Prince. But let my favors hide thy mangled face;
And, even in thy behalf, I ll thank myself
For doing these fair rites of tenderness
Adieu, and take thy praise with thee to heaven.
Thy ignominy sleep with thee in the grave,
But not remembered in thy epitaph. (I Henry IV, V. iv. 95 100)
The differences in styles of language truly brings alive the plays various characters, from the lowliest
drawer to the noblest knight. The playwright s audience would have been composed of a similarly
diverse spectrum of society, from the groundlings at the foot of the stage, to the members of the court
in attendance, and these disparate members of the audience might very well have come away from the
plays with different interpretations of

  • 4. Kate Chopin s The Awakening Commonly explored throughout her works, the idea of marriage inhibiting a woman s freedom is the driving force behind Kate Chopin s contextual objections to propriety. In particular, The Awakening and The Story of an Hour explore the lives of women seeking marital liberation and individuality. Mrs. Chopin, who was raised in a matriarchal household, expresses her opposition to the nineteenth century patriarchal society while using her personal experiences to exemplify her feminist views. Katherine O Flaherty, later Kate Chopin, was born to Eliza and Thomas O Flaherty in St. Louis, Missouri on February 8, 1850 (Deter). Unfortunately, when Mrs. Chopin was four, her father died in a train incident leaving her under the care of three independent widows her mother, grandmother, and great grandmother (Deter). Mrs. Chopin s great grandmother, Victoria Verdon Charleville, directed her education, giving her a taste of the culture and freedom allowed by the French that many Americans during this time disapproved of . . . through the art of storytelling (Deter). Therefore, much of Mrs. Chopin s success in writing about women pursuing morality, freedom, and political independence can be attributed to Victoria. Furthermore, the teachers at the St. Louis Sacred Heart Academy, a school Mrs. Chopin s father had previously enrolled her in, exposed her to Catholic teachings devoted to creating good wives and mothers, while also teaching independent thinking ( Biography ). ... • 5. Death Penalty Is Cruel And Unusual Punishment The legal executions first started in California when it was under the Practices Act in 1851. Then in February 14th 1872 it was put in the Penal Code. Capital punish in counties continued until an amendment by the legislature in 1891 said that it could only happen in the State Prisons picked by the court. The first state execution in California happens on March 3rd 1893 at San Quentin and the first one in Folsom was on December 13th 1895. In the 1937 s the legislature decided that instead of hanging people they were going to use lethal gas. This did not affect the people that were already sentenced to be hanged and the last hanging was in December 3rd 1937 at Folsom and the last hanging in Quentin was hold on May 1st 1942. Twenty five years after 1967 because of the United States Supreme Court choices there were no executions. In 1962 the Supreme Court thought that death penalty as cruel and unusual punishment. Because of this 107 people had their sentences changed to something that was not death. In November 1972 nine months after they had this choice the California electorate amended the state constitution overruled it. Then in 1973 the Supreme Court decided that the death penalty was unconstitutional. The California legislation was passed in 1973, which meant that the death penalty could only happen under certain conditions. These conditions were kidnapping if the person dies, train wrecking if any person dies, assault by a life prisoner if the victim dies within a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Yellow Wall-Paper By Charlotte Stetson Analysis of The Yellow Wall Paper Charlotte Stetson s writing immediately draws the reader in, and makes them want to continue reading The Yellow Wall Paper as fast as they can so that they can see what happens in the end. The fact that this story is formed like a diary and the narrator is very fervent makes the writing in this story very unique, as not many others are like it. The narrator in this story is very sick, and yet no one believes her, so for a bit she tries to believe that she is healthy. Believing that she is healthy did not work and she starts to descend into madness; despite this, the narrator is still a very relatable person. The diary like style that this story is written in gives a day by day view into the narrator s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Those three main parts of the story really come together and show that the narrator may not be as crazy as she seems. This story was written to resemble entries in a diary, and that was an amazing decision because it gives the reader a day by day look into what the narrator is thinking. This really helps the reader connect with the narrator more because it shows that her descent to madness was quite Tobias 2 gradual and she was relatively normal for a time. The gradual decline of the narrator s mental health was very well written. The nervous breakdown didn t just come from nowhere, there were instances and thoughts that built up to that moment, which made the story even better. Another part of the writing that really works for this story is the old english style it s written in. This style really helps to place the story in the correct setting, which is very important because it shows that it was written in a time where there was not a lot of information about nervous breakdowns or other mental health problems. The fervent manner in which the story is written also helps to draw the reader in. The narrator s writing is very passionate. The way the story is written makes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Catcher in the Rye by J.D Sallinger, Questions and... For this guided reflection paper, I observed two classrooms, the first was Mr. M s 10th grade, 3rd period ELA class and the second was Mrs. L s 11th grade, 4th period ELA class. Both observations were done on April 9th at the same high school. The focus for this paper was the teachers and specific components of their lesson plans. Both classrooms were not only engaged in different reading materials but also in different parts of their unit plan. Mr. M s class was just beginning their unit plan on the novel The Catcher in the Rye while Mrs. L s class was finishing up their unit plan on the novel The Scarlett Letter. Both classrooms had different, specific learning goals, activities, and assessments. Mr. M s lesson was meant to introduce students to the novel The Catcher in the Rye and get them to start working on their culminating journal project. One learning goal for the lesson can be found in the AIM, How can observing our surroundings help us to understand our place in the world . One way Mr. M addressed this learning goal was through the DONOW, by having the students observe their surroundings and write about what they observed, the students become more aware of their surroundings. This not only helps them understand and connect with the main character Holden, but also helps them discover more about themselves as a person and understand their place in the world . • 8. Demand Curve POLITEHNICA UNIVERSITY OF TIMISOARA FACULTY OF ELECTRONICS AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS COST OF PRODUCTION IORDAN ELVIS CRISTIAN 2nd YEAR, GROUP 1.1 TIMISOARA, 2013 INTRODUCTION Cost is a sacrifice of resources to obtain a benefit or any other resource. For example in production of a car, we sacrifice material, electricity, the value of machine s life (depreciation), and labor wages etc. Thus these are our costs. Costs are usually classified as follows: * Product cost(cost of production) * Period cost In this paper, we will analyze the cost of production with all what it involves. For the beginning, it is necessary to know that the cost of production is classified into: Direct materials: Represents the cost ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Consider the following hypothetical example of a boat building firm. The total fixed costs, TFC, include premises, machinery and equipment needed to construct boats, and are £100,000, irrespective of how many boats are produced. Total variable costs (TVC) will increase as output increases. Plotting this gives us Total Cost, Total Variable Cost, and Total Fixed Cost. Given that total fixed costs (TFC) are constant as output increases, the curve is a horizontal line on the cost graph. The total variable cost (TVC) curve slopes up at an accelerating rate, reflecting the law of diminishing marginal returns. The total cost (TC) curve is found by adding total fixed and total variable costs. Its position reflects the amount of fixed costs, and its gradient reflects variable costs. But, from an economical point of view, we cannot talk about fixed and variable costs without taking into consideration the marginal costs. In fact, marginal cost is the cost of producing one extra unit of output. It can be found by calculating the change in total cost when output is increased by one unit. It is important to note that marginal cost is derived solely from variable costs, and not fixed costs. The marginal cost curve falls briefly at first, then rises. Marginal costs, as the economists say, are derived from variable costs (mentioned above) and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. The Benefits Of Aerobic Exercise Aerobic exercise has been studied and through those studies researchers have found that aerobic exercise improves the cognitive abilities of young adults. Some of the cognitive abilities improved are learning, memory, and decision making. Through aerobic exercise these cognitive abilities are improved and sharpened. Aerobic exercise stimulates the hippocampus which is the area responsible for memory and partly for learning. Another part aerobic exercise stimulates is the frontal cortex which is the area responsible for decision making. Aerobic exercise also stimulates many parts of the brain that together are responsible for our learning. Aerobic exercise combined with mental training is what helps further the cognitive abilities of young adults. Through aerobic exercise the cognitive abilities of young adults improve to new heights. Aerobic exercise has many beneficial effects in the cognitive abilities of young adults. One of the big parts that aerobic exercise helps young adults with is learning. Young adults performing aerobic exercise experience an increase in volume in the hippocampus which helps benefit learning. The hippocampus is one of the parts in our brain responsible for our learning. Aerobic exercise through studies has been shown to stimulate this part in our brains. In Aerobic Exercise for New Brain Cells and Cognitive Performance the director states that aerobic exercise can double the production of new brain cells in the hippocampus. This leads to new brain connections that in turn improve the amount of information we can handle. One reason that aerobic exercise helps stimulate the hippocampus is because it also stimulates BDNF production. BDNF production is a nerve growth factor that boosts the growth of new brain cells in the hippocampus. This leads to new brain cells being form which in turn improves cognitive abilities and mood. While aerobic exercise does stimulate the hippocampus which boosts our learning, it is still important to put in mental training so the new brains cells remain and don t die off. Through aerobic exercise young adults will be able to handle more information which in turn will help increase their performance in academics. Another cognitive ability that ... • 10. The German Coast Uprising Slavery was a part of life in the 1800s. Many northerners were opposed to the idea, and this led to the civil war. However, plantation owners had no intention of giving up their slaves in the early 1800s. A slave s life consisted of white owners, work, and whippings. This oppression eventually led to outbreaks like Nat Turner s rebellion and Gabriel s conspiracy. The German Coast Uprising was the biggest of these slave revolts. Charles Deslondes, the leader of the uprising, was born in Haiti in 1780. He was likely part of the mass immigration from Haiti to America in 1809. After moving to Louisiana, he became a slave driver at the Woodland Plantation owned by Manuel Andry. They attacked their owner Manuel Andry, killing him and stealing all his valuables. They then continued to kill whites, burn plantations, and garner support. Three days into their revolt, the slaves were attacked by local militias led by General Wade Hampton and Major Homer Virgil Milton. Witnesses claimed that 66 tool wielding slaves were killed and 75 were captured during the fight. Of the 75 that were captured, 18 were sentenced to death. A majority of the slaves involved in the fighting were able to escape. The reason Deslondes started the insurrection is because he was tired of seeing whites abusing their slaves unnecessarily. There is no doubt that he was inspired by the Haitian revolution. Some might argue this by stating that he was the one beating them, because he was their overseer. But did he really enjoy beating those he would have called brothers, because of their struggles as a race? Charles Deslondes and the slaves who fought beside him were willing to, and did, die for what they believed in. Sadly, the German Coast Uprising has been forgotten by many ... • 11. A New Leader Of A Small Staff Essay As City manager, my job is to lead and supervise a staff of 30 to match my current vision for our organization going forward. During the hiring process I was informed that the city has a good financial reputation, however, it has fallen on some hard times and its reputation has the possibility of slipping if something is not done to alleviate this possibility. Upon agreeing to accept this position I understood the importance in paying attention to detail and taking the time to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the organization so that we can enhance capabilities and mitigate weaknesses. The members that hired me were made up of a search committee who may not have first hand knowledge of the actual tasks required to do the job successfully. As the new leader of a small staff it is critical to first figure out the processes and structures required to accomplish the goals of the organization. A lack of information often requires leaders to be flexible, resourceful, and innovative during the first three to six months on new jobs. I intend on working closely with the city council to further help drive our priorities as we continue to uplift the community. However, I will be very realistic about what we can in fact accomplish within a six month time frame. Identifying key priorities will be the first step. I will take ample time to understand the key problems and board member s goals. Once I have gathered enough information, I will have a better understanding of the most ... The reason why I did this was because I was trying to configure it in such a way that the characters display a delicate and refined structure. Although the characters translated to Women Struggle , I also incorporated some details that represent society s status quo for women. For instance, for the phrase women should look charming and act perky , I made sure that the slices and cuts were somewhat precise. Despite trying so hard to perfect the cuts, it was just too difficult to master, but that is also another meaning. With the little slivers of paper jutting out, it demonstrates that women ... In chapter twenty of Behold the Dreamers Jende and Neni get in argument because Liomi heard his mom on the phone saying that they were returning to Cameroon, the country they escaped from for a better opportunity. Jende gets very upset with Neni as he says the following is that what you think? You think we should tell a child his father might be deported? You want Liomi to know what s happening to me? Neni and Jende fear for their son because they want him to get a good education and to grow up in a country with opportunities. Their dream is for Liomi to not grow up in a poor city like they did. Their dream is also to become someone in life and to own their own house, which is something many families in the city of Woodburn are also eager for. The life of Jende and Neni in the novel Behold the Dreamers is very similar to the life in the city of Woodburn, which I think is interesting because Jende and Nenis life experience took place in a much bigger city than Woodburn New York city. But, the dreams, expectations, issues, and fears are very similar between both cities and families. As the city of Woodburn and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 17. Analysis Of Blood In The Hills Based off glancing at the title alone, the reader is immediately aware of what to expect upon opening the publication. Blood in the Hills: The Story of Khe Sahn, the Most Savage Fight of the Vietnam War, written by Robert Maras, with the assistance of Charles W. Sasser, tells the story of Maras, a Vietnam veteran, and his experiences during the war. From his combat landing on Red Beach, to his departure from the Demilitarized Zone, also known as the DMZ, Robert Maras describes in great detail the joys and sorrows of his time in Vietnam. The book also exhibits the development of the average Marine, and the mental and physical toll the fighting at Khe Sanh takes on each individual. Throughout the memoir, the warrior creed of Semper Fidelis is repeated an abundance of times, meaning always faithful, and symbolizing the US Marine Corps determination to fight for their beloved country (Maras 3). This saying was especially influential during the times Bob Maras was subjected to viewing his comrades perish before him, as he could only hope he would survive the countless battles in the jungle terrain of Khe Sanh. Blood in the Hills is a powerful read for those engrossed with not only the corporeal aspect of war, but fascinated in learning about warfare from a psychological perspective. Critically speaking, the authors are somewhat qualified to discuss the topic at hand, but Maras, the protagonist, is by no means a professional historian on the Vietnam War. In fact, the same ... • 18. Tissue Engineering Scaffold Preliminary Data 3: Tissue engineering scaffolds comprised of decellularized myocardial extracellular matrix effectively emulate the natural cardiac environment. In order to best reconstruct the damaged tissue of a heart following myocardial infarction, the chemical and biological cues that dictate cell recruitment and differentiation in the native tissues are required. Each human tissue contains its own specific combination of proteins and proteoglycans within the ECM to facilitate this process, so it serves that scaffold material obtained from the heart would best serve to reconstruct cardiac tissue (Singelyn et al. 2009). Modifying the scaffold into an injectable form would allow for the noninvasive delivery of the therapy directly to the affected site. • 23. Susan Bordo Never Just Pictures Summary In the article Never Just Pictures, the author, Susan Bordo, addresses the cultural reasons behind the rise in eating disorders. She asserts that modern media and advertising campaigns have played an integral role in this increase. Though unfortunate, the media s focus is not on the well being of its viewers, but on the level of cash flow they provide. The advertising moguls use their agencies as double edged swords; they will make ads for McDonalds, then go in the next room and conduct a photo shoot with a six foot two, eighty pound woman. The world of advertising needs to realize their work is being seen by millions of people and is affecting some of those people in extremely negative ways. The author of this article begins her analysis of the rise in eating disorders by acknowledging America s obsession with being the ideal weight. From an extremely young age, American children are being taught that women in movies and on the covers of magazines possess the ideal figure. The author states Children are being taught...being fat is the worst thing one can be (Bordo 1). This is disturbing to say the least. There many attributes worse than being overweight: dishonest, cruel, and murderous to name a few. Bordo also uses an example in the first paragraph of her essay that is appalling. Alicia Silverstone, the lead role in Clueless, was completely bombarded with insults about her weight, though she had only gained a few pounds since her starring role. The advertisers did ... The questionnaire was structured to a five point Likert scale, where strongly agree was assigned 1 point, agree was assigned 2 points, neutral was assigned 3 points, disagree 4 points and strongly disagree 5 points. Descriptive study design was adopted in conducting this research study. Descriptive research is the process of collecting data so as to test hypotheses or in order to answer questions regarding the current status of the variables or subjects in the study which is very useful as the respondents were given enough time to respond to the questionnaires without any interference whatsoever or manipulation (Williams, 2007; Ary et al., 2009). The descriptive study included survey and fact finding enquiries. This is the most preferred research technique as it provides a more generalized outcome of the study population. Thus this design was considered most useful for generalizing the research findings (Sindhu, 2012). The literature used in this study was obtained from original articles retrieved from online databases, including but not limited to the EMBASE database, the Cochrane Library and the Psych INFO. • 25. Samuel Beckett¨s Novel Molloy and Its Particular Style,... There s no question Samuel Beckett was deeply influenced by the avant garde style of fellow Irish novelist James Joyce when writing Molloy. Both Beckett and Joyce allude to the classics (Dante s Purgatorio and Homer s Odyssey, respectively) and both extensively employ interior monologue to often similar effect. Even so, Beckett, ever aware of the shadow cast by his former mentor, also attempted to eschew Joycean tendencies in his works, as demonstrated in Molloy. Here, not only does Beckett entirely deny readers the luxury of context, he deconstructs the very fundamentals of novel and narrative. Distinctly metafictional in form, Molloy self consciously underlines its own artificiality and, on a universal level, that intrinsic to fiction itself. Like the titular allusion of Joyce s Ulysses, the two protagonists in Molloy also embark on a voyage of sorts, albeit the nature of which is even more so internalized. As a result, there s not much by way of plot or setting, which remain intentionally hazy. Still, the novel moves, sometimes at a dizzying pace, in part to its frequent digressions and elision of so many vital answers: Are Molloy and Moran the same character? Is it possible Molloy may not even be a person altogether but rather an alter ego of Moran? Is Molloy a state of mind? What exactly does it mean to be searching for Molloy ? Ohio State Mapp vs. Ohio State(1961) Background: In the Mapp vs Ohio state court case, the issue disputed was when the appellant Dollree Mapp was convicted of possessing obscene materials after an illegal police search of her home for a fugitive. During the year of 1961, Ohio police were looking for a criminal accused of a bombing and had been told that he was hiding in Dollree Mapp s house. Police acted quickly and came to her house but when she didn t answer the door, police officers forced themselves inside. Dollree demanded to see the police s search warrant once having spoken to her attorney but police didn t have one so they held a piece of paper to disguise that it was a warrant when it really wasn t. Dollree grabbed the paper and when trying to read it, she was then handcuffed on the ground and police continued to search her house (Landmark cases). During the search, officers found pornography and other materials that were against Ohio State law in her basement. As a result, Dollree was arrested, found guilty, and sentenced to 1 to 7 years in the Ohio Women s Reformatory. Dollree felt that justice was unfair so she consulted with her attorney. She appealed her conviction on the basis of freedom of expression (Oyez). Descriptive details of this painting will follow, which will allow an in depth look into the elements and principles of design that are evident in this Caravaggio s work. The Calling of St Matthew illustrates a religious scene where Jesus initially encounters Saint Matthew. Most striking is the group of well dressed young and old men who have gathered around a table counting money. One young man has a rapier at his side. Perhaps they are gangsters sitting in a bar gambling. An upright gentleman in dark attire, punctuated by red sleeves, stands in the shadows, his cheekbones red and defined. The glint of a halo adorns him and provides religious iconography. Jesus points his hand at a bearded gentleman sitting amongst his friends, Saint Matthew. Sunlight cuts the room in half and catches Matthew s face. He looks both surprised and guilty, but the pointing leaves Matthew confused, so he points to himself as if to say, Oh, are you looking for me? On the far left of the table, a young accountant is absorbed in counting his coins; an old man in spectacles joins his side. A boy in yellow with a prepubescent face, looks upon Jesus with an air of Who is this fellow? An old man with a cane, points his hand too at Matthew as if to question, Are you sure he is a Saint? • 37. Essay On Raw Gley Soil The Main Soil Types of the UK Terrestrial Raw Soils These are soils consisting predominantly of unaltered mineral material that have no surface/sub surface horizon attributed to soil forming processes (unless buried under a 730cm thick deposit from the Holocene) (Avery, 1980;). These soils do not normally have continuous vegetation cover (Avery, 1980). They occur in very recently formed soil and may have a superficial organic or organo mineral layer less than 5cm thick. Sometimes they have a buried horizon below 30cm of depth. (Thompson, 2007; Jarvis, 1984). Raw Gley Soils Raw gley soils are found within mineral material that has remained waterlogged since deposition (Thompson, 2007). The soils are missing a distinctive top soil and contain gleyed subsurface horizons (Avery, 1980). They also contain a mineral horizon which starts at 20cm and extends below 30cm (Avery, 1980). Jarvis (1984) also states that the soils are distinctly mottled above 40cm depth. Raw gley soil types are mostly confined to intertidal flats (Avery, 1980) or areas that represent various stages in the development of salt marshes (Thompson, 2007). Lithomorphic Soils Contain a distinctive top soil that is humose or peaty and a substratum starting at 40cm in depth which has been altered little (Avery, 1980; Buol, 1997). The soils do not contain a disturbed surface layer, the B horizon is not podzolic, weathered or argillic (Avery, 1980; Buol, 1997) and the soil profile is shallow (Ashman Puri, 2002). ...
