A Study On Eating Disorders
Part 3: The Research Paper At least every 62 minutes someone dies as a direct result from suffering an
eating disorder ( EDC 1 ). Eating disorders like binge eating, Bulimia, and Anorexia, include strange
behaviors when it comes to food.Eating disorders affects their mentality, and how the person visually
looks like. Some eating disorders are caused by stress which eventually ends up leading to depression.
Many eating disorders are caused because of how the media glorifies them. In all the magazines all the
women are extremely thin which causes many women and young adults to get Bulimia, Anorexia or
any other types of eating disorders. There is a good percentage of people which are in denial about

Those with eating disorders believe that they don t fit in with the rest of society. In order for the
depression to improve achieving a certain a certain body type will ease the way they feel. While eating
disorders may first appear to be solely about food and weight preoccupations , people suffering from
eating disorders often try to use food and the control of food to cope with feelings and emotions that
may otherwise seem overwhelming ( Barbee J.G 2). Being able to control something in their lives
make them feel better, therefore, makes them feel less discouraged. Those diagnosed mentally feel
lonely, and assume that nobody can relate with them. Depression is a way that many people cope with
their eating disorders. Having an eating disorder modifies the way others view each other. People now
believe that what is shown on the internet is the ideal body image for everybody. In reality the body
type portrayed in advertising as the ideal is possessed naturally by only 5% of American females (
Eating Disorder Statistics 1 ). Our media s increased obsession with the thin ideal and industry
promotion of a perfect body may contribute to unrealistic body ideals in people with and without
eating disorders. Success and worth are often identified with being thin in popular culture. Success is

Essay On The Crusades
The word crusade is from a French term that mean to lift the cross. The word is used to describe the
early military War or the campaigns by early Christians against Muslims. The Crusades were military
campaigns sanctioned by the Roman Catholic Church during the High and Late Medieval Ages. In
The year 1095, Pope Urban the Second proclaimed the First Crusade with the goal of restoring
Christian admission to holy places in and Around Jerusalem. Following this First Crusade there was
an alternating over 100 years struggle for dominance over the Holy Land, with seven more major
crusades and numerous minor ones, These Muslims controlled the holy land (currently they are
Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon and Israel) subsequently (Slack in 2003) and Christian all around Europe

In the end, the Host (Turks) had completely overwhelmed the crusaders in only three different clashes
as their reaction to the barbarism of the initial crusade. Later by 1187, Muslims finally unified under
Saladin, after several years of fighting among themselves. This generated a single Muslim state that
was very commanding. Saladin overthrew the crusaders easily and seized back Jerusalem in
September that year by cracking open the walls. The Saladin victory of the war were a shocking to the
whole of Europe. After getting the news on losing Jerusalem, Pope Urban III was said to have
allegedly died of a heart attack. The seventh crusade happened in the summer of the year 1244, where
a Khwarezmian army surpassed and captured Jerusalem. They allied with France s army and they

My Life Goals
After careful contemplation and the usual changing of my thought process I concluded that thinking
and not writing out my goals or vision plan was not beneficial to me. I asked myself, why can t I have
it all instead of having to choose? The question order is what do I want from my career and then what
do I want from my life or for my life? I thought and decided that society has planted a seed in our
heads saying that to accomplish your goals there is a specific order in which things must be performed
and for many this may accurate and lead them to success. My situation is not everyone else s state of
affairs it is truly my own. I am thirty five years of age on my third marriage and have four children.
My life was hard, some would say horrific but my experiences have brought me much diversity in the
knowledge of the true world and its functions. Today I open my box that society has handed me
tearing through the walls of criticism and obstacles developing my own vision of my life goals starting
from the future and planning backwards to achieve my outcomes. My priority is my family so I will
start with those questions first, what do I want from life? I want nothing from life, because I know that
nothing is handed to you and you must work hard for what you want. Rephrasing the question what do
I want out of life? I want to live a simple life of elderly age with my husband alongside a lake in a
simple but unique crafty shelter. That being known, I can determine how hard do I

Indira Gandhi was a Loved, Hated, and Respected Leader of...
All my games were political games; I was, like Joan Of Arc, perpetually being burned at the stake.
These are meaningful words of the ever so loved, hated, and looked up to woman of India: Indira

prime minister of India. Indira was constantly around politics and became very used to the idea of
what being a prime minister is like. Indira was mostly taught by tutors in her home growing up. When
she did attend school it was not year round. This let her spend as much time at home with one on one
tutors as much as she needed to. As a child, the only time she was around her father was when he wasn

The Pros And Cons Of Human Rights Act 1998
Human rights were initiated for the protection of the basic civil and political liberties in the general
public. In the United Kingdom the Human Rights Act of 1998 came into force in October 2000. The
aim of the HRA in the UK was to provide further legal effect to the basic rights and freedoms
contained in the European Convention of Human Rights. The rights contained in the HRA not only
affect essential matters of life and death, but also issues that occur in people s daily life. Considering
the broad range of basic rights covered, it is not astonishing that the HRA is viewed as one of the most
significant segments of legislation ever passed in the UK. The impact of Human Rights Act 1998 in
UK is critical. There are areas in the society that improved from the Act but also areas that got worse.
The HRA of 1998 has both its advantages and disadvantages. Here are some reasons why the Human
Rights Act makes UK a better place. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Before the HRA of 1998, most people who suffered human rights abuses did not know that their rights
have been violated, and even if they knew, they did not know where or who to turn to for help. The

international solutions available to them when their rights are violated. Equality and Human Rights
Commission inspects human rights, protecting equality across nine grounds: age, disability, gender,
race, religion and belief, pregnancy and maternity, marriage, sexual orientation*. The EHRC promotes

The Established Rules For The Doric And Corinthian Orders...
In Book 4, Vitruvius writes on the established rules for the Doric and Corinthian orders, and explains
the differences and peculiarities.
Chapter I: The Origins of the Three Orders, and the Proportions of the Corinthian Capital
In chapter 1, Vitruvius writes of the proportions of the Ionic, Doric, and Corinthian columns and the
similarities and differences. The three architectural order by its capital are Doric, Ionic, and
Corinthian. Corinthian columns, apart from in their capitals that has the same proportions as in the
Ionic order, but the height of the capitals taller than the Ionic capitals that give it a slimmer
appearance. In Corinthian style two thirds are added capitals, that gives a slender appearance to the
length of the columns. Corinthian columns are composed either of the Doric proportions or uses the
Ionic, and the Corinthian order does not have any peculiar arrangement for its cornices or other
ornaments. The Corinthian order may be arranged with a frieze decorated with sculptures that is
accompanied with dentils and coronae. The Corinthian order may include mutules in the coronae and
guttae with the architraves as the triglyph system of the Doric style or as the Ionic style.
Doric was the first to have rules for their symmetry to tolerate large sums of weight, and also to a
satisfactory appearance of beauty. They measured a man s foot and compared this with his height,
finding that the foot was one sixth of the height, and they applied the same principle

Iroquois Creation Myths
Throughout the world myths are used to teach morals and spread information in a way that is
entertaining and delightful to children and adults alike. One popular type of story is the creation myth.
In the story of The World on a Turtle s Back the Iroquois people live in harmony and balance with
nature, whereas the Cherokee in The story of Corn and Medicine work against nature.
These two myths have many similarities but the most important one is the heavy reliance on the small
creatures in their society. Both in the Iroquois and the Cherokee myths there is a little creature that
helps out tremendously by diving to the bottom of the ocean. In the Iroquois myth it is the muskrat
who, dived and disappeared...After a long time, his little body floated to the surface of the ocean, a
tiny piece of earth clutched in his paw (Iroquois myth). In the Cherokee myth a Water beetle dove
below the water and eventually came back with some mud from below (Cherokee myth). Additionally,
in the Iroquois story there are two sons/brothers and they have profound impact on the world around
them, These two brothers, as they grew up, represented the two ways of the world which are in all
people... the right and left (iroquois myth). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

How Did Leonardo Da Vinci Done
Art is never finished, only abandoned. This is one of Leonardo da Vinci s famous quotes. I personally
find it appealing and memorizing. This is 100% true as well! Nothing in life is ever truly finished!
Leonardo da Vinci was pure genius, however not just from his quotes. He did much, much, more!
Leonardo da Vinci was born on April 15, 1452. He was born in Vinci Italy. His exact birthplace was in
a farmhouse in the middle of the beautiful hills of Tuscany outside the village of Anchiano in what is
now Italy. Leonardo da Vinci most likely spent most of his time with his uncle, Francesco, instead of
his two unmarried parents. At the age of 15, Leonardo da Vinci became the apprentice of the artist
Andrea del Verrocchio. Andrea del Verrocchio ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He studied the field of civil engineering, and created many amazing inventions. His invention of the
parachute was an international breakthrough! He also invented scissors, which also changed the world,
and is nowadays used in almost every classroom and almost every household. Leonardo da Vinci also
sketched up the first helicopter. He may not have built it, but he did imagaine it, and his sketch helped
modern day scientists and engineers build the helicopter. Not only did Leonardo da Vinci sketch the
helicopter, create the parachute, and invent the scissors, but he also built The Revolving Bridge. The
Revolving Bridge was a portable bridge, used over a variety of bodies of water. It was mostly used by
armies to pass over rivers, streams, and small lakes. Leonardo da Vinci originally designed it for Duke
Sforza.
I think that this field of science is something I would like to study because I enjoy both building and
creating, and I adore art. I definitely think that if I ever become a scientist, this would be the field of
science I would enjoy! I spend most of my time drawing and building, much like Leonardo da Vinci
did. And it just so happens that I ve always had an eye for science, and it seems to be my best subject.
I hope that maybe, just maybe, one day, I will be just as good as artist as Leonardo da Vinci. So as I
conclude my essay, I would like to say just one more genius quote by Leonardo da Vinci

Riverboat Gambling
The crisp slicing of cards, shimmering dresses, sharp suits, dealers shouting, clouds of smoke from
cigarettes, and coins spitting out from glowing slot machines is the modern day gambling that we
know today. Thinking of gambling in America has always brought attention to prospering cities like
Las Vegas or Atlantic City. Gambling unfortunately has created a dark subculture that surrounds
gaming such as: crime, prostitution, and loansharking. An evolution of security and the disappearance
of the mob have made gaming safer for the family since the mid 19th century. These two cities have

Although the financial backers of the colonies saw gambling as a source of the colonial problems, they
began to see it as a solution as well. Once the lottery exposed its untapped potential profits it soon
became a civic responsibility. This new resource became heavily relied upon and brought good
reciprocity to the community. During colonial period, before the American Revolution, the lottery was
used to back some of the most prestigious universities such as: Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Dartmouth,
and Princeton, it also was used to build churches, and libraries (Truitt, 1996). After the revolution the
frontier lifestyle began to take full effect. With Americans having a spiritual drive to move west and
make their fortunes, gambling shared similar foundations: a spirit of adventure, opportunity, and risk
taking. Riverboat gambling was soon to take form after this introduction to gambling in early colonial
times.
The first appearance of riverboat gambling began in the early 1800 s. The lower Mississippi Valley
became a legitimate and organized enterprise. The Mississippi River and connected waterways were
major avenues of trade and farmers and merchants and the riverboats carried passengers who had lots
of cash (Clotfelter Cook). This line of travel consistently transported merchants and farmers leaving
them vulnerable to the temptation taking risks with their newfound money.
The golden age for riverboat gambling occurred during 1840 1860. During

As a child, vacations were few and far between. Having three other siblings and a single parent, trips

hundreds of mosquitos flew out of it. My brother and his friends acted as if it was not that bad, I guess

Surprisingly it was not the bite of the mosquitoes, but the menacing noise and what seemed like
impending doom. Fortunately, the mosquitoes subsided once we got out on the water. Fishing on the
Yukon River was sensational. We started with an hour and a half boat ride up stream to get to our
fishing destination. Even though it was the middle of summer the temperature on the river was cold. I
watched in amazement, as a bald eagle plucked a fish from the river. Even more incredible was the
shear sense of immenseness. We stopped at an inlet to the Yukon River, and that is where we did most
of our fishing. We were fishing for Northern Pike and in order to keep them, they had to be between
32 and 46 inches in length. It seemed like everything we caught was either under or over the legal
length, but it was still fun catching them. I was so excited about being in Alaska, on the Yukon River,
and with my brother, I did not mind releasing most of our catch. After many hours of fishing we
decided we had enough for the day. Instead of heading back to the dock to clean the fish, we filleted
the fish in the middle of the river so we did not have to get back in

believe in. India believed in something higher, something or someone who created everything that had
happened. Because their differences in beliefs, India and Greece had a different way they governed
their countries, their beliefs and religions, along with the fluidity of their social structures.
Ancient Greece and India had different views on their religions and beliefs. Greece, unlike India, did
not have a specific religion or belief, like the Indians did. Greeks and Indians both believed in Gods to
some extant, however, Greek pictured their gods as humans, and Indians pictured them as something
higher than humans. Greece was not as reliant on religion as India, as they were mostly based on
philosophy. Greece did believe in Gods, but thought of them as humans rather than anything they
couldn t see. India, unlike Greece, had very specific beliefs and had three main religions. Jainism,

The Road Not Taken By Robert Frost
Choosing the right path is hard when there is a lot at stake to lose. Sometimes doing what is best for
you may hurt the ones you love. It is sometimes necessary to take a chance and choose the riskier path
to see what is behind the next bend, or corner. The poem, The Road Not Taken describes a person
having a hard time choosing what path to take. Robert Frost elicits the central idea, theme, meaning,
and how the speaker came to his decision by the use of metaphors describing the want for his readers
to think through the hard decisions in life. One decision in life can make you or break you. It is all on
how a person approaches the situation.
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, Frost introduces the metaphor of two diverging roads. He is
depicting that it is fall by using the lexicon yellow wood . Fall is symbolic of a time of change.
And sorry I could not travel both Robert Frost is sorry that must make a choice. He using the word
choice sorry shows his uneasiness in making his decision.
And be one traveler, long I stood He is standing alone and having a hard time making a decision on
own. And looked down one as far as I could He tries to see the consequences of one decision.
To where it bent in the undergrowth; There are too many unknowns to know what will happen. Robert
Frost uses the word undergrowth to represent the unknowns blocking his vision.
Then took the other, as just as fair, It seems just as nice to travel.

Analysis Of My Last Duchess By Robert Browning
Londyn Zografakis
English Period 8
7 November 2014
Throughout history, gender roles have been an important barrier in society. Women are forced to
satisfy expectations established by men and society. My Last Duchess, by Robert Browning, focuses
on the powerful Duke establishing certain expectations of the Duchess, and attempting to control her.
Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, concentrates on Laertes establishing certain expectations of Ophelia,
and seeking to control her. A Room of One s Own, by Virginia Woolf, centers on societal expectations
of Judith, and her father trying to control her. In all three texts, men have the ability to control women
and have the freedom to do as they please. Women must conform to the expectations of faithfulness,
attentiveness, and chastity.
My Last Duchess, by Robert Browning, depicts powerful husbands attempting to control the actions
of their wives as they are free to do as they please. In contrast, women are expected to be faithful and
attentive only to their husbands. The power and control of the Duke is conveyed by a painting of the
Duchess. It belongs to the Duke and is referred to as my last Duchess (1). The use of my demonstrates
the possessive nature of the Duke and his claim of the Duchess as his own personal possession, much
like the painting itself. As the Duke persists on forcing domination upon the Duchess, he is greatly
displeased to find that she treats and considers him as the same value as nearly any other man.

The Trial Of The White House
On August 6, Lewinsky appeared before the grand jury to begin her testimony, and on August 17
President Clinton testified. Contrary to his testimony in the Paula Jones sexual harassment case,
President Clinton acknowledged to prosecutors from the office of the independent counsel that he had
had an extramarital affair with Ms. Lewinsky. In four hours of closed door testimony, conducted in the
Map Room of the White House, Clinton spoke live via closed circuit television to a grand jury in a
nearby federal courthouse. He was the first sitting president ever to testify before a grand jury
investigating his conduct. That evening, President Clinton also gave a four minute televised address to
the nation in which he admitted he had engaged in an inappropriate relationship with Lewinsky. In the
brief speech, which was wrought with legalisms, the word sex was never spoken, and the word regret
was used only in reference to his admission that he misled the public and his family. Five weeks later,
on February 12, the Senate voted on whether to remove Clinton from office. The president was
acquitted on both articles of impeachment. The prosecution needed a two thirds majority to convict
but failed to achieve even a bare majority. Rejecting the first charge of perjury, 45 Democrats and 10
Republicans voted not guilty, and on the charge of obstruction of justice the Senate was split 50 50.
After the trial concluded, President Clinton said he was profoundly sorry for the burden

Case Study Of Eco-Feminism
Women Empowerment and Eco feminism: Two case studies of India; Bihar in perspective Ssubmitted

Abstract Eco feminism grows from the idea that a woman s ethic are closer and in sync with the nature

woman have no control and right on natural resources. The history of woman s land right in India and

THE LINK BETWEEN STOCK PRICES AND THE ECONOMY
Economic theory proposes that there should be a strong link between economic activity and stock
prices, given that its price is the discounted present value of the firm s payout. If this payout is finally
a function of real activity, such a link should exist.
There are several theoretical propositions suggesting how stock prices can have a direct impact on
economic output, which further strengthens the link amongst these two variables.
1. The first link was proposed by Tobin in 1969. The focus is on the impact that share prices have on
the cost of capital. The coefficient that captures this is called Tobin s Q, which is given by the ratio of
market value of current capital to the cost of replacement capital. When the prices of shares are high,
the value of the firm to the replacement cost of its capital is also high i.e., the Tobin s Q is also high.
Furthermore, this leads to rise in investment expenditure and thus causes a rise in the aggregate
economic output as for firms it is easier to finance their investment expenditures. This is because
investment would be simpler as it would require a lower share offering in a situation of a higher price

The Key Themes Of Gender Trouble By Judith Butler
Since its publication in 1990, Gender Trouble has become one of the key works of contemporary
feminist theory, and an essential work for anyone interested in the study of gender, queer theory, or the
politics of sexuality in culture. This is the text where Judith Butler began to advance the ideas that
would go on to take life as performativity theory, as well as some of the first articulations of the
possibility for subversive gender practices, and she writes in her preface to the 10th anniversary
edition released in 1999 that one point of Gender Trouble was not to prescribe a new gendered way of
life [...] but to open up the field of possibility for gender [...] Widely taught, and widely debated,
Gender Trouble continues to offer a powerful ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Gender performativity is related to performance and shares elements with it, but it has no subject. She
explains, The action of gender requires a performance that is repeated. This repetition is at once a
reenactment and reexperiencing of a set of meanings already socially established (178). Performativity
creates a fictional reality in which gender and its roles are determined according to a men/women
binary distinction. According to her, the category of Women from which the feminist struggle arises is

Notwithstanding, ABC filled the airwaves with negative information on Trump, and ignoring the

Constantly reminding people that Clinton will win might influence people to vote for her who

In addition to groupthink being at work hear there was also a fear of separation. This became apparent
when Morton Thiokol revised their initial warning about the O ring failure at the request of NASA
management.
Morton Thiokol wanted to be a part of the NASA team and did not want to remain apart from them
and although the decision was political in nature the fear of separation was so overwhelming that it
contributed to groupthink and they indicated that all danger signal s were acceptable risk.
Ethical gaps are compounded at the organizational level.
For example the explosion of the Challenger that was launched at a temperature it could not tolerate.
Post crash studies acknowledged that the explosion was caused by an O ring failed to seal on one of
the shuttle s solid rocket boosters.
The night before the launch, engineers and managers from NASA and Morton Thiokol met to discuss
the safety of the launch of the Challenger in a low temperature.
The shuttle program had previous launch problems with O rings had been detected. Now, under
intense pressure, Morton Thiokol engineers recommended to NASA personnel that the shuttle should
not be launched at low temperatures, but this recommendation was ignored (Bazerman, and

It was used towards the end of the war, on massively reinforced installations, underground caverns,

Reflection Paper On Selfishness
ME ME ME How does this help me? Wait what do I get out of this Of course I deserve it I want it I
need it Just give it to me, said Erin Ronald. This quote describes selfishness because it is the contrary
of generosity and solidarity, and the excess of love to oneself and the lack of group values. Knowing
the world, is essential for a person s life. Many times, we do not understand how a society works, how
people work, how our life goes, how the present goes, etc. As a result of all of them, we can
experience certain anguish that appears when it wants but with relatively frequency, such as: Why do I
do what I do? Am I happy? Who I am? For all of these I have proposed to write this philosophical
paper about what I believe the causes are and what might help to accommodate the selfishness we are
facing now in New York City. Survival, cultural and parental influence, and manners are the causes
why people in this city are selfish. It would be difficult to change our society with this paper, but I
believe that this reflection is the best method to redirect a life from all areas and ages.
People are just not born being selfish, they become selfish by a factor. One of the factors can be when
people become selfish when they have to act fast in a life or death situation in order to survive.
Suppose we change the Kohlberg s example about Heinz, there is only one pill in the world that has
the potential to save your friend and yourself s life. Who do you think deserves the pill? According to
Aristotle, friendship is one of the virtues necessary for living well, and an essential aspect of a life of
happiness and morality, the friendship of good men is good, being augmented by their companionship;
and they are thought to become better by their activities and by improving each other (1172a). A good
man is interested in doing good to others and when it is about a friend could forget about himself. I
agree that Aristotle s theory about friendship could make satisfy the humanity s necessities, if all men
were virtuosos. Doing good is beneficial for both, the one who practices and who receives it. People
become selfish when they have to face the live or death situation because people have an instinct to

Hundreds of deaths occur each year due to electrocutions in or around the home. Over two thirds of
these deaths and thousands of electrical shocks can be prevented if a ground fault circuit interpreter is
installed properly in the homes branch circuits. However many people do not know what a ground
fault circuit interpreter or GFCI is or if it is installed in their homes. Invented by Charles Dalziel in
1961, the GFCI is an inexpensive device that monitors electricity flow within the circuits. If there is a
loss of current the device shuts off that circuit instantly to avoid a fatal dose of electricity. The national

button the GFCI should trip and turn off the power to anything plugged in. If this does not happen, the
device is faulty or improperly installed and Atlanta area homeowners should contact an Atlanta
electrical contractor as soon as possible. GFCI Portable: These devices resemble an extension cord.
They plug into a wall outlet and allow users to plug items into them while the device is encased for
weather protection. These are used mainly in outdoor areas where the receptacle type use is
impractical. GFCI Circuit Breakers: These devices are installed into a panel box allowing for the
GFCI to dual function. The device will protect the selected circuits from ground fault but will also
shut down the circuit in the event of an overload or a short. It is never wise for a homeowner
inexperienced in electrical work to attempt to install a GFCI alone. Contacting an electrical contractor
should precede any do it yourself projects around the home as there is a serious risk of injury and
fatality for a simple error. In Georgia, an Atlanta electrician will be able to asses the electrical system
in the home and provide a good deal of information on options and local

A Literary And Historical Standpoint
Although it is practical from a literary and historical standpoint, object driven analyses of Shakespeare
s First Folio fail to account for, as Brown says, the story of the object asserting itself as a thing. By
treating the First Folio as only a book meant to be read for information these analyses let it stagnate in
a subject object binary which leads us to falsely believe that the subject creates knowledge from the
object. Or as Brown says, we are stuck viewing the object as a code by which our interpretive
attention makes them meaningful (Brown 4). This line of thinking is problematic because the object
then lacks agency. When the object transitions to a thing, the binary no longer applies and we can see
that it has knowledge with or without a subject involved. Additionally, this shift out of the binary
allows for the thing to become its own subject. If, as Baudrillard believes it is the subject that totalizes
the world (qtd in Brown) then this implies that the thing is not merely passively impacted by the world
but actively impacts the world with its presence.
However, only viewing the First Folio as a thing in opposition to an object also limits our study of it.
Instead, I propose that we should examine the story of an object becoming a thing. Before I further my
argument I want to take a moment to fully examine the difference between an object and a thing and
why current scholarship has failed to acknowledge the importance of the First Folio becoming a thing.

How Does Toni Morrison Use Symbols In The Bluest Eye
The little girl in pink started to cry...the tears of the little pink and yellow girl (Morrison 109). In this
passage of The Bluest Eye, Toni Morrison uses a simile and symbolism to show the relationship Mrs.
Breedlove had with Pecola. Morrison uses symbolism when she writes We could hear Mrs. Breedlove
hushing and soothing the tears of the little pink and yellow girl (Morrison 109). This shows the
difference in the way Pecola was treated compared to the little girl. The little girl represents how
beauty can influence people to be friendlier because the little girl is assumed to be prettier than Pecola.
Mrs. Breedlove disliked Pecola because she was insulting her for something that Pecola didn t do.
Morrison uses a simile when she says Over her shoulder she spit out words to us like rotten pieces of

their husbands, who are training to become pastors with the African Inland Church Tanzania ( AICT ).
While much emphasis is placed on teaching women to serve as a pastor s wife, women are not often
given the opportunity to make a name for themselves and are relegated to a subservient role. This
project will build on the work that McMaster Scholars, Genelle Castro and Alicia Kalik, began in
2015. During the 2015 KBTS Women s Conference, attendees expressed a desire to have additional

When a business is successful it is able to provide a sustainable income. By having two incomes, the
family can better financially support their children, along with their other financial obligations. School
will be more affordable for children, and they can see what accomplishments their parents have
achieved. Children will gain more responsibilities at home, and help them learn new skills along the
way (Sagalla Carney, 2012). Through all of the obstacles that women have faced struggling for the
right to have a career, it can be empowering to have a career. Women did not give up, and knew that
they had what it took to support a family, as well as themselves. Because it was a challenge, women
started working harder for what they wanted, and helped them become better business women. Their
confidence rose, and having more opportunities gave them a purpose (Dina, 2012).

The Finnish Model Will Work Well On Reforming The U. S
The Finnish Model will work well on reforming the U. S. because it provides equal education and
opportunity for everybody. In the country of Finland, there were no high tech, interactive whiteboards
in her [Kim s] classroom...no police officer in the hallway (p. 83). This suggests that these students do
not need fancy equipment or armed protection to be the smartest kids in the world. In addition, the
Finnish want everyone to be successful despite their circumstances at home, and one way they do so is
possessing academic and vocational schooling. This gives students a choice between two equitable
options of education instead of forcing them down a one way path to graduation. The U.S., in my
opinion, would greatly benefit from allowing this option in their schooling system because it allows
students freedom over their future.
The Finnish philosophy of learning starts at a young age formal education starts at age seven.
Kindergarten is not part of the education policy in Finland; in fact, it is not deemed as an educational
system at all. Sahlsburg trusts this type of culture is favorable for the United States because it allows
kids to be kids for as long as possible. This extended childhood concept is shared among many parents
in Finland, and being able to play and enjoy childhood is a virtue more important than having to sit
down at a desk for eight hours and have formal instruction. On a different aspect, students in Finland

Althusser And Critique Of Marxism Essay
Althusser and Critique Paper
Marxist philosopher Louis Althusser reoriented the study of Marxism in the 1960s and 1970s, shifting
it from a humanist interpretation to one structured around the philosophy of ideology and the
philosophy of science. The purpose of this reorientation revolved around the necessity to ground an
understanding of critique. By focusing on the notions of ideology and science, Althusser can provide
an accurate explanation for the revolutionary nature of Marx s thought, specifically the creation of the
science, dialectical materialism. This science, according to Althusser, shows that the production of
thought is historically determined and provides the basis for all critique: as being able to discern mere
ideas and historically determined ideologies from true scientific knowledge. By understanding what is
truly science and ideology, the proletariat can correctly work to rectify the practices that impose a
false ideology and work for a politics that is not based on exploitation.
To understand Althusser s elucidation of Marx s Philosophy, and by extension his work on critique,
one has to specifically focus on the theory of Marxism as a science, or the unification of two sciences,
historical materialism and dialectic materialism. It is within the science of historical materialism, or
the science of history determined by modes of production, that one could understand how ideologies
are introduced and constantly reinforced. Modes of production, or the

The Eyes And Touched The Crescent Moonstone Of Her...
Britta closed her eyes and touched the crescent moonstone of her necklace. The usual disorientation
when entering a memory enveloped her but quickly faded. She opened her eyes, and her surroundings
appeared as they had before. But now she was alone. At first, doubt clouded her thoughts. In the few
times has used the necklace with Gall s supervision, she discovered that the memory world using it
seemed more vivid and crisp than when using her innate abilities. But not by much. How different
would the memory appear if it was old? She had to leave that question for another time, for the
memory residual she was in was still potent, being only from the night before. Footsteps approach
from behind. She quickly slipped into the shadows cast by the stairs. A figure rushed past. Dressed in a
gray robe, a young girl with straw colored hair stopped and turned to look back the way she came. A
dark figure glided down the steps holding a sword with a blade that glimmered in a translucent
fashion. A wave of fear and nausea coursed through Britta. She started to reach for the necklace to
break the connection. A shout echoed down the stairs, Drakar! Leave her to me. He sheathed his
weapon and turned away. Nausea and fear subsided. Another figure came into view, dressed in black.
Faline, appearing as she had in Gall s memory, descended the stairs, a crooked smile on her face. The
girl raised her arms to defend herself, but Faline extended an arm, and the girl clutched at own her
throat,

The Effects Of The BP Oil Spill
The BP oil spill happened on April 10th at approximately 11:50 am of the year 2010. The BP oil spill
is one of the largest spills in the history of the U.S. and one of the largest unintentional spills in
history. The oil in which was spilled was in the Gulf of Mexico. The spill did not only harm the
environment, but 11 lives were taken in total from the spill. It took 87 days to clean up most of the oil.
The minimum penalty was $1,100 per barrel, while the maximum was $3,000 per barrel. The total
price paid for the minimum was $5.39 billion, and the max was $14.7 billion. Although, some argued
that the rate should have been as high as $4,300 per barrel. If that were the case, then it would be
$21.07 billion. The settlement amount that was eventually paid was at a lower amount of $18.7
billion. The percent of the maximum fine that was paid was 89%. In order to get the percentage, you
need to divide 18.7 billion by 21.07 billion and that equals 0.887, then round it to 89. Then, when you
want to get the final amount, you have to add the highest and lowest terms and divide by two. So as
the equations go, it would be $21.07 billion + $18.7 billion = $39.77 billion / 2 = $19.9 billion. The
mid range to the final amount of $18.7 billion, is $19.9 billion.
The price of the settlement at $18.7 billion was in fact too low. If you look at the number of people
and animals affected by the spill, it is justified asking for a higher amount from BP oil company.

Foreign Aid and Economic Growth in the Developing...
ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS Using cross country data, I examine how foreign aid affects economic
growth in developing countries over the period from 1975 to 2000. I find evidence that foreign aid
significantly and negatively correlates with growth in developing countries. However, foreign aid to
inland countries as well as to South Asian countries during the period of 1992 2000 is found to have a
positive impact on growth. In addition, a strong divergence trend is found among countries in the data
set. The results suggest that (i) there may be problems in the present aid providing system, where aid
hinders growth of developing countries (ii) the successful experience of some inland countries and
South Asian nations during the period of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
1.3. Organization of the Study The study is organized as follows. Chapter II reviews the literature with
various outcomes shown by different authors with different views and models. Chapter III provides an
overview of the regions in the study. Chapter IV describes the data and methodology. Empirical results
and policy implications are discussed in chapter V. Chapter VI concludes the study. Chapter II
Literature Review In general, aid is found to have a positive impact on economic growth through
several mechanisms (i) aid increases investment (ii) aid increases the capacity to import capital goods
or technology (iii) aid does not have an adverse impact on investment and savings (iv) aid increases
the capital productivity and promotes endogenous technical change (Morrissey, 2001). Papanek
(1973), in a cross country regression analysis of 34 countries in the 1950s and 51 countries in
the1960s, treating foreign aid, foreign investment, other flows and domestic savings as explanatory
variables, finds that foreign aid has a substantially greater effect on growth than the other variables.
He explains that aid, unlike domestic savings, can fill the foreign exchange gap as well as the savings
gap. Unlike foreign private investment and other foreign inflows, aid is supposed to be specifically
designed to foster

The Growing Problem of White Collar Crimes in India The practitioners of evil, the hoarders, the

Society Has Been Wrongly Judging The Behavior Of Others...
Society has been wrongly judging the behavior of others for centuries ( Dr. Sex discusses societal
conventions, BDSM ). For decades practitioners of BDSM have been judged because of the way they
choose to live their lives. When one hears or thinks of the acronym BDSM, there are stigmas that they
think of as well. By stigma, we mean that a person is recognized or labeled as having undesired
differentness from what we had anticipated (Hoff). Practitioners of BDSM have always faced these
stigmas, and because of this fact, practitioners have been forced to hide the way they live. Not only
have these stigmas caused practitioners to keep their personal affairs private, but it has caused non
practitioners to treat those who practice BDSM ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sex ). When people think about BDSM their thoughts are usually negative, associating BDSM purely
with pain, but the idea that all BDSM play involves pain is a common misconception: many play
activities are focused not on pain, but rather on psychological power exchange (Hebert). Usually,
stigmas are accepted by the general public, but according to Hebert, the stigmas about BDSM are
usually accepted by medical and legal professionals as well. In particular, it is commonly believed that
those who participate in BDSM must be psychologically disturbed. Because of these stigmas
associated with BDSM, people act and treat BDSM practitioners differently than those who do not
practice BDSM. In a study done by Ali Hebert and Angela Weaver, there were several benefits and
disadvantages discovered when discussing BDSM with several practitioners of BDSM. The very first
disadvantage listed in Hebert and Weaver s study were the stigmas placed on BDSM. A prominent
challenge for many of the participants was discrimination...one submissive expressed anguish at the
unkind words of an acquaintance who mocked BDSM practitioners to her face without knowing that
she shared such proclivities. One man simply stated I ve been told that I m going to Hell. Fear of
being mocked, prosecuted, or even witch hunted led participants to feel that they had

Hugo Film and Literature Adaptation
When looking at Hugo directed by Martin Scorsese the adaptation from the Novel The Invention of
Hugo Cabret by Brian Selzink I believe it is a close adaptation. There are differences however in order
to accomplish what the director was trying to portray. These differences are what made the film a
close adaptation. The way dialogue is portrayed differs in the novel. The film has time and
background music to elaborate on details. The novel has to keep the audience engaged. Camera angle
also help portray this dialogue. Thes camera angles can add meaning to the subject being filmed
(Desmond Hawkes p.28). In this aspect the characters can get into more detail in the film. The

Geroges Melies was the first one to try and portray this art of story telling. WE learned this earlier in
the semester through reading Desmond and Hawks Melies... came from an entertainment background,
and so adapting theatrical conventions to the new medium was natural for him. (Desmond Hawkes
p.11). Many view Scorsese as the same type of innovator in the cinematic world. This is also were

somebody who s been dead a long time who you can t speak to. You are with a living pioneer of
cinema... (Hugo Movie Companion, Selznick p. 73). I believe the set design also stayed true to the
novel and to the time period of the setting. The set director gather inspiration from various Paris
stations and re created the station in an enclosed set warehouse in England. This allowed the film crew
and cast to iron out the details to make the film as close an adaptation as possible. This was also tied
with costume and lighting. The film crew wanted to achieve the color palate and texture of the time
period. This was done through the setting, costume, makeup, lighting and editing. Overall the
adaptation was very good. The small differences only helped further the film to create the best film in
Scorsese s eyes. These small adjustments made the film

Part 1: Exploring an audiovisual case study a) What are Scott and Jean trying to achieve with the
icebreakers?
Scott and Jean s Icebreaker activities serve several different purposes, the first of which being to
encourage the group to come together as a whole and get to know one another. The initial activity did
a fabulous job of encouraging the youngsters to introduce themselves to their peers in a fun and non
intimidating way. It broke the ice (LGBT Youth Scotland clips 2 6). If the introductions had been done

Informal education is totally different to the type of education that takes place within schools. Young
people are not taught the objectives defined by a teacher as they would be in a classroom, they are
encouraged to work things out for themselves as an active learner. An educator s role in informal
education is to create situations in which young people can identify their own goals for learning
(Mackinnon, 2013 p13). In this instance (LGBT activity) the students were placed in small groups and
given the agenda i.e. where they would like Peer Education to be in two months time. From this they
worked together to discuss and identify the skills and barriers involved in peer education. However
they did not sit in a group around a table as you would expect to find with group activities taking place
in a school, instead they grouped using the furniture and floor space around the room in an informal
manner and discussed issues within their group rather than being directed by Scott or Jean whose
input was merely to work around the groups asking relevant questions to encourage independent
thinking therefore the practitioner becomes a facilitator of opportunities in which young people can
work collaboratively on projects or activities ( Mackinnon, 2013 p13) . Once the groups had discussed
their ideas they relayed what they had learnt as one large group, sometimes sharing personal
experiences which showed how confident and at ease they

Genetic Causes
Genetic Causes
A person s genetic structure, passed on from their parents, is responsible for both their physical and
behavioral characteristics. People who have inherited genes responsible for alcoholism from their
parents will automatically be prone to addiction. There is not one single gene that passes alcoholism
down through one s children. Identifying each specific gene involved in alcoholism is almost
impossible, instead, studies have shown that certain gene combinations have a strong relationship with
alcoholic disorders. However, some studies have shown that certain combinations of different genes
can create a relationship with alcohol addiction.
Alcoholism is a medical diagnosis. As such it does not apply merely to heavy drinking, or merely to
getting into trouble because of drinking, or getting drunk a specified number of times. The diagnosis
of alcoholism applies only to those who manifest the symptoms of addiction. (Keller 1982). Some
behavioral genes can also be passed down from one s parents. Those genes could influence a
propensity for alcoholism in an individual. Mental and behavioral illnesses include some like
depression and schizophrenia. The latter illness is more common in people that have a familial history
that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A stressful workload or workplace environment can lead to the likeliness of a person to drink heavily.
Stressful relationships with people one encounters regularly such as family members like one s
spouse, siblings, parents, or children may be the cause of a need for substance use. An abusive person
in one s life can cause high stress levels, perhaps only remediated by a drink of alcohol. For example,
having the occupation of a doctor or perhaps a nurse. Those jobs take a lot of time and energy and
return the person with an unimaginable load of stress. The person may feel they deserve to drink or
need to drink. This can therefore lead to uncontrolled use of a

My situation is not everyone else s state of affairs it is truly my own. I am thirty five years of age on my third marriage and have four children. My life was hard, some would say horrific but my experiences have brought me much diversity in the knowledge of the true world and its functions. Today I open my box that society has handed me tearing through the walls of criticism and obstacles developing my own vision of my life goals starting from the future and planning backwards to achieve my outcomes. Not only did Leonardo da Vinci sketch the helicopter, create the parachute, and invent the scissors, but he also built The Revolving Bridge. The Revolving Bridge was a portable bridge, used over a variety of bodies of water. It was mostly used by armies to pass over rivers, streams, and small lakes. Leonardo da Vinci originally designed it for Duke Sforza. I think that this field of science is something I would like to study because I enjoy both building and creating, and I adore art. My brother and his friends acted as if it was not that bad, I guess a person can get used to anything, but I was having one of the worst experiences of my life. Surprisingly it was not the bite of the mosquitoes, but the menacing noise and what seemed like impending doom. Fortunately, the mosquitoes subsided once we got out on the water. Fishing on the Yukon River was sensational. We started with an hour and a half boat ride up stream to get to our fishing destination. Even though it was the middle of summer the temperature on the river was cold. I watched in amazement, as a bald eagle plucked a fish from the river. Even more incredible was the shear sense of immenseness. We stopped at an inlet to the Yukon River, and that is where we did most of our fishing. We were fishing for Northern Pike and in order to keep them, they had to be between 32 and 46 inches in length. It seemed like everything we caught was either under or over the legal length, but it was still fun catching them. I was so excited about being in Alaska, on the Yukon River, and with my brother, I did not mind releasing most of our catch. After many hours of fishing we decided we had enough for the day. Instead of heading back to the dock to clean the fish, we filleted the fish in the middle of the river so we did not have to get back in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. The Road Not Taken By Robert Frost Choosing the right path is hard when there is a lot at stake to lose. Sometimes doing what is best for you may hurt the ones you love. It is sometimes necessary to take a chance and choose the riskier path to see what is behind the next bend, or corner. The poem, The Road Not Taken describes a person having a hard time choosing what path to take. Robert Frost elicits the central idea, theme, meaning, and how the speaker came to his decision by the use of metaphors describing the want for his readers to think through the hard decisions in life. One decision in life can make you or break you. It is all on how a person approaches the situation. Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, Frost introduces the metaphor of two diverging roads. He is depicting that it is fall by using the lexicon yellow wood . Fall is symbolic of a time of change. And sorry I could not travel both Robert Frost is sorry that must make a choice. He using the word choice sorry shows his uneasiness in making his decision. And be one traveler, long I stood He is standing alone and having a hard time making a decision on own. And looked down one as far as I could He tries to see the consequences of one decision. To where it bent in the undergrowth; There are too many unknowns to know what will happen. • 22. Analysis Of My Last Duchess By Robert Browning Londyn Zografakis English Period 8 7 November 2014 Throughout history, gender roles have been an important barrier in society. Women are forced to satisfy expectations established by men and society. My Last Duchess, by Robert Browning, focuses on the powerful Duke establishing certain expectations of the Duchess, and attempting to control her. Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, concentrates on Laertes establishing certain expectations of Ophelia, and seeking to control her. A Room of One s Own, by Virginia Woolf, centers on societal expectations of Judith, and her father trying to control her. In all three texts, men have the ability to control women and have the freedom to do as they please. Women must conform to the expectations of faithfulness, attentiveness, and chastity. My Last Duchess, by Robert Browning, depicts powerful husbands attempting to control the actions of their wives as they are free to do as they please. In contrast, women are expected to be faithful and attentive only to their husbands. The power and control of the Duke is conveyed by a painting of the Duchess. It belongs to the Duke and is referred to as my last Duchess (1). The use of my demonstrates the possessive nature of the Duke and his claim of the Duchess as his own personal possession, much like the painting itself. As the Duke persists on forcing domination upon the Duchess, he is greatly displeased to find that she treats and considers him as the same value as nearly any other man. ... Contrary to his testimony in the Paula Jones sexual harassment case, President Clinton acknowledged to prosecutors from the office of the independent counsel that he had had an extramarital affair with Ms. Lewinsky. In four hours of closed door testimony, conducted in the Map Room of the White House, Clinton spoke live via closed circuit television to a grand jury in a nearby federal courthouse. He was the first sitting president ever to testify before a grand jury investigating his conduct. That evening, President Clinton also gave a four minute televised address to the nation in which he admitted he had engaged in an inappropriate relationship with Lewinsky. In the brief speech, which was wrought with legalisms, the word sex was never spoken, and the word regret was used only in reference to his admission that he misled the public and his family. Five weeks later, on February 12, the Senate voted on whether to remove Clinton from office. The president was acquitted on both articles of impeachment. The prosecution needed a two thirds majority to convict but failed to achieve even a bare majority. Rejecting the first charge of perjury, 45 Democrats and 10 Republicans voted not guilty, and on the charge of obstruction of justice the Senate was split 50 50. THE LINK BETWEEN STOCK PRICES AND THE ECONOMY Economic theory proposes that there should be a strong link between economic activity and stock prices, given that its price is the discounted present value of the firm s payout. If this payout is finally a function of real activity, such a link should exist. There are several theoretical propositions suggesting how stock prices can have a direct impact on economic output, which further strengthens the link amongst these two variables. 1. The first link was proposed by Tobin in 1969. The focus is on the impact that share prices have on the cost of capital. The coefficient that captures this is called Tobin s Q, which is given by the ratio of market value of current capital to the cost of replacement capital. When the prices of shares are high, the value of the firm to the replacement cost of its capital is also high i.e., the Tobin s Q is also high. Furthermore, this leads to rise in investment expenditure and thus causes a rise in the aggregate economic output as for firms it is easier to finance their investment expenditures. This is because investment would be simpler as it would require a lower share offering in a situation of a higher price for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 30. Reflection Paper On Selfishness ME ME ME How does this help me? Wait what do I get out of this Of course I deserve it I want it I need it Just give it to me, said Erin Ronald. This quote describes selfishness because it is the contrary of generosity and solidarity, and the excess of love to oneself and the lack of group values. Knowing the world, is essential for a person s life. Many times, we do not understand how a society works, how people work, how our life goes, how the present goes, etc. As a result of all of them, we can experience certain anguish that appears when it wants but with relatively frequency, such as: Why do I do what I do? Am I happy? Who I am? For all of these I have proposed to write this philosophical paper about what I believe the causes are and what might help to accommodate the selfishness we are facing now in New York City. Survival, cultural and parental influence, and manners are the causes why people in this city are selfish. It would be difficult to change our society with this paper, but I believe that this reflection is the best method to redirect a life from all areas and ages. People are just not born being selfish, they become selfish by a factor. One of the factors can be when people become selfish when they have to act fast in a life or death situation in order to survive. Suppose we change the Kohlberg s example about Heinz, there is only one pill in the world that has the potential to save your friend and yourself s life. Who do you think deserves the pill? According to Aristotle, friendship is one of the virtues necessary for living well, and an essential aspect of a life of happiness and morality, the friendship of good men is good, being augmented by their companionship; and they are thought to become better by their activities and by improving each other (1172a). A good man is interested in doing good to others and when it is about a friend could forget about himself. I agree that Aristotle s theory about friendship could make satisfy the humanity s necessities, if all men were virtuosos. Doing good is beneficial for both, the one who practices and who receives it. People become selfish when they have to face the live or death situation because people have an instinct to ... • 32. A Literary And Historical Standpoint Although it is practical from a literary and historical standpoint, object driven analyses of Shakespeare s First Folio fail to account for, as Brown says, the story of the object asserting itself as a thing. By treating the First Folio as only a book meant to be read for information these analyses let it stagnate in a subject object binary which leads us to falsely believe that the subject creates knowledge from the object. Or as Brown says, we are stuck viewing the object as a code by which our interpretive attention makes them meaningful (Brown 4). This line of thinking is problematic because the object then lacks agency. When the object transitions to a thing, the binary no longer applies and we can see that it has knowledge with or without a subject involved. Additionally, this shift out of the binary allows for the thing to become its own subject. If, as Baudrillard believes it is the subject that totalizes the world (qtd in Brown) then this implies that the thing is not merely passively impacted by the world but actively impacts the world with its presence. However, only viewing the First Folio as a thing in opposition to an object also limits our study of it. Instead, I propose that we should examine the story of an object becoming a thing. Before I further my argument I want to take a moment to fully examine the difference between an object and a thing and why current scholarship has failed to acknowledge the importance of the First Folio becoming a thing. ... In the country of Finland, there were no high tech, interactive whiteboards in her [Kim s] classroom...no police officer in the hallway (p. 83). This suggests that these students do not need fancy equipment or armed protection to be the smartest kids in the world. In addition, the Finnish want everyone to be successful despite their circumstances at home, and one way they do so is possessing academic and vocational schooling. This gives students a choice between two equitable options of education instead of forcing them down a one way path to graduation. The purpose of this reorientation revolved around the necessity to ground an understanding of critique. By focusing on the notions of ideology and science, Althusser can provide an accurate explanation for the revolutionary nature of Marx s thought, specifically the creation of the science, dialectical materialism. This science, according to Althusser, shows that the production of thought is historically determined and provides the basis for all critique: as being able to discern mere ideas and historically determined ideologies from true scientific knowledge. By understanding what is truly science and ideology, the proletariat can correctly work to rectify the practices that impose a false ideology and work for a politics that is not based on exploitation. To understand Althusser s elucidation of Marx s Philosophy, and by extension his work on critique, one has to specifically focus on the theory of Marxism as a science, or the unification of two sciences, historical materialism and dialectic materialism. It is within the science of historical materialism, or the science of history determined by modes of production, that one could understand how ideologies are introduced and constantly reinforced. Modes of production, or the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 40. The Eyes And Touched The Crescent Moonstone Of Her... Britta closed her eyes and touched the crescent moonstone of her necklace. The usual disorientation when entering a memory enveloped her but quickly faded. She opened her eyes, and her surroundings appeared as they had before. But now she was alone. At first, doubt clouded her thoughts. In the few times has used the necklace with Gall s supervision, she discovered that the memory world using it seemed more vivid and crisp than when using her innate abilities. But not by much. How different would the memory appear if it was old? She had to leave that question for another time, for the memory residual she was in was still potent, being only from the night before. Footsteps approach from behind. She quickly slipped into the shadows cast by the stairs. A figure rushed past. Dressed in a gray robe, a young girl with straw colored hair stopped and turned to look back the way she came. A dark figure glided down the steps holding a sword with a blade that glimmered in a translucent fashion. A wave of fear and nausea coursed through Britta. She started to reach for the necklace to break the connection. A shout echoed down the stairs, Drakar! Leave her to me. He sheathed his weapon and turned away. Nausea and fear subsided. Another figure came into view, dressed in black. Faline, appearing as she had in Gall s memory, descended the stairs, a crooked smile on her face. The girl raised her arms to defend herself, but Faline extended an arm, and the girl clutched at own her throat, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. The Effects Of The BP Oil Spill The BP oil spill happened on April 10th at approximately 11:50 am of the year 2010. The BP oil spill is one of the largest spills in the history of the U.S. and one of the largest unintentional spills in history. The oil in which was spilled was in the Gulf of Mexico. The spill did not only harm the environment, but 11 lives were taken in total from the spill. It took 87 days to clean up most of the oil. The minimum penalty was $1,100 per barrel, while the maximum was $3,000 per barrel. The total price paid for the minimum was $5.39 billion, and the max was $14.7 billion. Although, some argued that the rate should have been as high as $4,300 per barrel. If that were the case, then it would be $21.07 billion. The settlement amount that was eventually paid was at a lower amount of $18.7 billion. The percent of the maximum fine that was paid was 89%. In order to get the percentage, you need to divide 18.7 billion by 21.07 billion and that equals 0.887, then round it to 89. Then, when you want to get the final amount, you have to add the highest and lowest terms and divide by two. So as the equations go, it would be $21.07 billion + $18.7 billion = $39.77 billion / 2 = $19.9 billion. The mid range to the final amount of $18.7 billion, is $19.9 billion. The price of the settlement at $18.7 billion was in fact too low. If you look at the number of people and animals affected by the spill, it is justified asking for a higher amount from BP oil company. Taking into consideration ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. Foreign Aid and Economic Growth in the Developing... ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS Using cross country data, I examine how foreign aid affects economic growth in developing countries over the period from 1975 to 2000. I find evidence that foreign aid significantly and negatively correlates with growth in developing countries. However, foreign aid to inland countries as well as to South Asian countries during the period of 1992 2000 is found to have a positive impact on growth. In addition, a strong divergence trend is found among countries in the data set. The results suggest that (i) there may be problems in the present aid providing system, where aid hinders growth of developing countries (ii) the successful experience of some inland countries and South Asian nations during the period of ... Chapter II reviews the literature with various outcomes shown by different authors with different views and models. Chapter III provides an overview of the regions in the study. Chapter IV describes the data and methodology. Empirical results and policy implications are discussed in chapter V. Chapter VI concludes the study. Chapter II Literature Review In general, aid is found to have a positive impact on economic growth through several mechanisms (i) aid increases investment (ii) aid increases the capacity to import capital goods or technology (iii) aid does not have an adverse impact on investment and savings (iv) aid increases the capital productivity and promotes endogenous technical change (Morrissey, 2001). Papanek (1973), in a cross country regression analysis of 34 countries in the 1950s and 51 countries in the1960s, treating foreign aid, foreign investment, other flows and domestic savings as explanatory variables, finds that foreign aid has a substantially greater effect on growth than the other variables. He explains that aid, unlike domestic savings, can fill the foreign exchange gap as well as the savings gap. Unlike foreign private investment and other foreign inflows, aid is supposed to be specifically designed to foster ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 44. Society Has Been Wrongly Judging The Behavior Of Others... Society has been wrongly judging the behavior of others for centuries ( Dr. Sex discusses societal conventions, BDSM ). For decades practitioners of BDSM have been judged because of the way they choose to live their lives. When one hears or thinks of the acronym BDSM, there are stigmas that they think of as well. By stigma, we mean that a person is recognized or labeled as having undesired differentness from what we had anticipated (Hoff). Practitioners of BDSM have always faced these stigmas, and because of this fact, practitioners have been forced to hide the way they live. Not only have these stigmas caused practitioners to keep their personal affairs private, but it has caused non practitioners to treat those who practice BDSM ... When people think about BDSM their thoughts are usually negative, associating BDSM purely with pain, but the idea that all BDSM play involves pain is a common misconception: many play activities are focused not on pain, but rather on psychological power exchange (Hebert). Usually, stigmas are accepted by the general public, but according to Hebert, the stigmas about BDSM are usually accepted by medical and legal professionals as well. In particular, it is commonly believed that those who participate in BDSM must be psychologically disturbed. Because of these stigmas associated with BDSM, people act and treat BDSM practitioners differently than those who do not practice BDSM. In a study done by Ali Hebert and Angela Weaver, there were several benefits and disadvantages discovered when discussing BDSM with several practitioners of BDSM. The very first disadvantage listed in Hebert and Weaver s study were the stigmas placed on BDSM. A prominent challenge for many of the participants was discrimination...one submissive expressed anguish at the unkind words of an acquaintance who mocked BDSM practitioners to her face without knowing that she shared such proclivities. Hugo Film and Literature Adaptation When looking at Hugo directed by Martin Scorsese the adaptation from the Novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selzink I believe it is a close adaptation. There are differences however in order to accomplish what the director was trying to portray. These differences are what made the film a close adaptation. The way dialogue is portrayed differs in the novel. The film has time and background music to elaborate on details. The novel has to keep the audience engaged. Camera angle also help portray this dialogue. Thes camera angles can add meaning to the subject being filmed (Desmond Hawkes p.28). In this aspect the characters can get into more detail in the film. Young people are not taught the objectives defined by a teacher as they would be in a classroom, they are encouraged to work things out for themselves as an active learner. An educator s role in informal education is to create situations in which young people can identify their own goals for learning (Mackinnon, 2013 p13). In this instance (LGBT activity) the students were placed in small groups and given the agenda i.e. where they would like Peer Education to be in two months time. From this they worked together to discuss and identify the skills and barriers involved in peer education. However they did not sit in a group around a table as you would expect to find with group activities taking place in a school, instead they grouped using the furniture and floor space around the room in an informal manner and discussed issues within their group rather than being directed by Scott or Jean whose input was merely to work around the groups asking relevant questions to encourage independent thinking therefore the practitioner becomes a facilitator of opportunities in which young people can work collaboratively on projects or activities ( Mackinnon, 2013 p13) . • 47. Genetic Causes Genetic Causes A person s genetic structure, passed on from their parents, is responsible for both their physical and behavioral characteristics. People who have inherited genes responsible for alcoholism from their parents will automatically be prone to addiction. There is not one single gene that passes alcoholism down through one s children. Identifying each specific gene involved in alcoholism is almost impossible, instead, studies have shown that certain gene combinations have a strong relationship with alcoholic disorders. However, some studies have shown that certain combinations of different genes can create a relationship with alcohol addiction. Alcoholism is a medical diagnosis. As such it does not apply merely to heavy drinking, or merely to getting into trouble because of drinking, or getting drunk a specified number of times. The diagnosis of alcoholism applies only to those who manifest the symptoms of addiction. (Keller 1982). Some behavioral genes can also be passed down from one s parents. Those genes could influence a propensity for alcoholism in an individual. Mental and behavioral illnesses include some like depression and schizophrenia. The latter illness is more common in people that have a familial history that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
