Newsworthiness of Child Abuse Cases
Society is now what Downing, Mohammadi and Mohammadi (1990) would call a media culture , this
is where the perceptions and images of reality are often shaped by the actions and decisions of news
editors and producers (Surrette, 1992). The role of the media according to O Shaughnessy and Stadler
(2008) is to give the public an insight on what is happening in the world and to make sense of that
information to the public. The main focus of this essay will be looking two main concepts which are
newsworthiness and the dark figure of crime, relating 5 news articles that are centred around child
abuse that have featured in the New Zealand Herald and stuff.co.nz.
The media plays an important role in society by creating and shaping society s attitudes about most
current issues including child abuse. In New Zealand, as well as in the international media, the
physical abuse of a child regularly features in the newspapers, magazines, radio and television
(Merchant, 2010). When it comes to the public understanding of child abuse, this is influenced by the
knowledge that they gain through reading newspapers or mass media like the television or radio.
Kitzinger (2004) states that our individual view and sense of the world are a social construct and the
media are an important resource to help us construct that world view.
The way that child abuse is reported in the media has become what you would call entertainment
where there seems to be an incline towards dramatising child abuse in a

The Taste Of Food Is The Ultimate Weapon Of War
Food is an imperative element of society that has continually brought people together all around the
world. From a BBQ in East Tennessee to eating Chow Mein in China, food holds a deep cultural
meaning and power. It has the means to be a weapon of war, and is a force of development. It is an
organizer and a tool to bring people together, and can be influenced by our social status. Needless to
say, as this world moves into a more modern way of life, the traditional ways of living are visually
fading away. As stated in the previous paragraph, food can be used as a powerful weapon of war. For
example, during WWII Americans all over the country were being asked to ration the food they eat.
Women were asked to save the fat off of meat after ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the book, Sociology on the Menu: An Invitation to the Study of Food and Society, Alan
Beardsworth and Teresa Keil explain that, For a start, traditional food systems are characterized by
patterns of local, relatively small scale production. They also go onto say that the modern food system
is made up of five parts which differentiate them from the traditional food society. Firstly, there is a
highly specialized, industrial system of food production. (Sociology on the menu) From which we can
derive that most of the food production for the modern market is concealed. Secondly, distribution is
through the commercial market; whatever our status, as long as we have the money, food is readily
accessible. (Sociology on the Menu) A long as one has the means, going to the grocery store will
never be a problem, especially living in the United States. Thirdly...visit to any supermarket
demonstrates the opportunities for consumption and emphasizes choice and variety, and this is largely
true for smaller food outlets as well. (Sociology on the Menu) Fourthly, since the markets for buying
and selling food and international, even global, shortages are rare. However, that is not to say that
shortages do not occur in particular places for particular groups, only that these arise from social and
political constraints rather than from the issues related to the availability of

A Synagogue Experience Essay
I have always been interested in learning about religion in conjunction with experiencing it. Growing
up I was raised in a Christian home and learned very little about any other religion including other
monotheistic religion. Judaism is the religion that I knew the least about and decided that the best
possible way for me to learn more was to experience it. I had only ever heard of Judaism in a comical
or historical way. I chose to go to a Synagogue to further my knowledge and experience Judaism first
hand.
I called ahead to Temple Sinai in Denver and arranged a time to visit with Rabbi Richard Rheins. It
just so happened that a class from Red Rocks was also planning a visit and I was encouraged to join
them as well. I was able to attend a special service on November 11th, Veterans Day. This service was
very different than what I had expected. It was a Shabbat service that included a naming, an honoring
of veterans, as well as two bat mitzvah announcements. I had to dress in business casual attire and
received snacks and drinks at the end called nosh. I had heard previously that during a Shabbat service
the Torah was brought out and during the service that I had attended, it was not.
When I walked into Temple Sinai I was given a copy of their holy book called a Siddur to following

There were hot and cold drinks as well as many different types of food. Mainly desert. During this
time both Rabbis made there way around the room and spoke to as many people as they could. I was
welcomed by a table a people who allowed me to ask questions and further explained the service to
me. My favorite part was how highly they spoke of the Rabbi and how they described the feeling they
had during the beginning of the service. Many of the people who I spoke to shared that there was
opposing views within the community and that they did share it with the

Definition Essay On My Mother A Hero
Everyone has a hero and everyone can be a hero. A hero is someone you look up to and inspire to be.
The dictionary defines a hero as a person who has made noble or brave accomplishments, but we can
all be heros. A hero isn t someone with superpowers; a hero is someone who is doing something for
the greater good. My mother is a true Michigan hero.
My mother didn t fight in any wars, but she fights to support her family everyday. My mother works
extremely hard to support me and what I do. She has to work long hours and still come home to clean
and cook, but she never complains and never asks for anything in return. I wish I could do more for
her, because she does so much for me. She gives my a home, food, clothings, but above all she gives

Rhetorical Analysis Of The First Rhetorical Strategy
The first rhetorical strategy I used in my descriptive paragraphs was word choice. I bring this up first
because without it, the reader has a vague perception of the story. Although if used accordingly, it
revives the story and the reader can fully grasp what you want them to see. The best use of this in my
positive paragraph was spacious . I wanted the reader to visualize a vast and roomy drive thru while
reading my paragraph. Although I could ve used other words like large , or big they wouldn t have had
the same effect because a place can be big and still be constricting. As for my negative paragraph my
best word choice would have to be snatched . I used snatched in this context because I believe it gave
readers the most negative visual about how the money is taken from the customer s hand. Other words
that I could have used like taken or grab would have failed to leave the same impression of negativity
in the reader. Sentence structure is another rhetorical strategy that also leaves an impression on the
reader. Sentence structure is an important component of anything meant to be read by others because
without sentence structure things can skipped be while reading and not even realized by the reader. By
putting the right detail first or last it can greatly affect how that single detailed is retained or forgotten
by the reader. In the first sentence of my positive paragraph I wrote, Whether on the brink of
starvation or just looking for a light snack . I

Lifelong Benefits Of Reading
Reading Has Lifelong Benefits
We are alone when we don t read. Lots of people read as a hobby. But have people ever thought of the
lifelong benefits of reading? Reading has many lifelong benefits; therefore, reading is very
fundamental, reading can make some people calmer, and a brain can stay sharp.
Reading is very fundamental. If people read a lot, other places in the brain will increase as well. In the
article The Long Term Effects of Skipping Your Reading Homework, Pamela state s, Reading makes
kids better at math. A british study found that students who read for pleasure not only had a better
vocabulary and spelling which is to be expected but that those students were also more proficient in
math. It makes sense that reading helps kids at math because if they are good at one subject, then they
can be good at multiple subjects. When people read, it can improve their spelling and vocabulary
because the more words they read, the more words they could learn. If someone doesn t know a word,
then they might look the word up and figure out what the word means. Then they will possibly have
learned a new word. Pamela DeLoatch wrote that reading can boost self esteem and communication
skills, One educated provider says that since students who read usually have enhanced vocabulary,
they can often find the words to express themselves and do not feel as frustrated and angry. If one kid
or adult is having a bad day, they might pick up a book and start reading. If the person

Differences Of The UEFA Champions League And The Super Bowl
Both the UEFA Champions League and Super Bowl in the United States are big sporting events both
nationally and internationally. There are several similarities between the opening ceremony of the
UEFA Champions League and that of the Super Bowl. One of the main similarities is that the two
events attract a huge number of fans. In the 2017 UEFA Champions League final, there were fans
drawn from both Real Madrid and Juventus. The final attracted many people as many people flocked
to the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Similarly, many fans flock the Super Bowl event in the United
States. Another similarity is the fact that the two events feature artist s performances. The Black Eyed
Peas performed during the opening ceremony of the 2017 UEFA Champions League. Similarly, the
Super Bowl has in the past featured artists such as Lady Gaga.
There are however some differences between the two events. The UEFA Champions League attracted
more fans compared to the Super Bowl. UEFA Champions League commands a wider fan base
globally compared to the Super Bowl. Another difference is the fact that while the Super Bowl has
halftime performances, the UEFA Champions League only features opening performances. The UEFA
Champions League Final opening ceremony also trends more compared to NFL Super Bowl.
Commercial Sponsors
Several multinational companies sponsored the UEFA Champions League. According to the policies
of the league, not more than eight companies should only sponsor a match. The

Inspiration or Perspiration
Thomas Alva Edison was a man of great talent and determination. A mind of absolute genius that
withheld spectacular and innovative ideas that Edison, himself, could not wait to share with the world.
The list of inventions and developments Edison is often known for are countless. Creations such as,
the electric light, the telephone transmitter, the phonograph, motion picture, electric storage battery,
and mimeograph machine, are just a mere few of his 1,093 United States patents and thousands more,
from twenty four different nations. Many of Edison s ideas were beyond the world s understanding.
Today, his inventions have greatly influenced the twentieth century, more than one could ever
imagine.
Thomas Edison was born February 11, 1847, in Milan, Ohio. He lived in Milan for seven years, until
his father decided to further his career and start a business in Port Huron, Michigan. Here, he spent
most of his childhood in a small, red brick home. At this home, Thomas found what he is known for
today. Due to Edison struggle in school and inept in mathematics, his mother, a former teacher,
decided to homeschool him. Though bad at school, Edison was eager to read, especially science
books. His love of science, lead him to start doing chemical and mechanical experiments in the
basement of his small home. This might have been the best decision his mother could have made for

Segu Analysis
The author Maryse Conde has based the story of Segu on real life events and practices of the late 18th
and early 19th century. The author has tried to bring out the tensions that existed in Africa at that time
by using the four brothers of the Traore family,Tiekoro, Siga, Naba and Malobali as scapegoats. She
talks about each of these characters in depth to show us their influences on the city. She shows how
traditional religion and Islam impact each character in the story. The traditional religion practiced by
the Bambara people revolved around worshipping their ancestors. The believed that there were many
spirits and not one but many gods who would govern everyday life. These gods would decide on what
was to be done with their current ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He had gone on to join the Ashanti army then. On his return, although Tiekoro was still a Bambara, he
dressed like a Muslim he wore loose robes, had his head cleanly shaven and he didn t adorn himself
with jewelry, jewelry that was quite common among men of Bambara he no longer desired the
physical presence of a woman in his bed and he also stopped practicing the traditional religion of the
Bambara. His faith now had only permitted him to believe in one god. He would be considered an
infidel if he did not stick to one religion. He would take off his cowhide sandals and submit and bow
down to pray to his God five times a day. He wanted to spread the words of Islam all throughout Segu.
He wished to give his people the power to read and write, the power to change their lives and submit
to a peaceful religion that didn t require them to perform any sinister sacrifices. He did this by opening
a koranic school with his own house. Too much surprise, Tieokoro s Islamic school had a number of
pupils, pupils coming from all the rich families of Segu. Even, the Mansa himself decided to send his
children to the Koranic school. This action not only amazed the Bambara people but it also amazed the
Traore family who were close to the king. El Hadj Omar, who at that time was considered as a very
holy person who had made numerous visits to Mecca, had decided to visit Segu and meet Tiekoro
after hearing so much about Tiekoro s efforts

The Death Of A Manicurist
Death of a Manicurist When the time comes for a woman, or even a male, to get their nails done, it is
not typical to think about the impact on the workers. The lives of the technicians are deeply impacted
by their jobs and how dangerous the chemicals are they surround themselves with every day. Sarah
Maslin Nir s article Perfect Nails, Poisoned Workers from the New York Times, an article from
Scientific American by Dine Fine Maron, and The United States Department of Labor gives many
reasons why nail salons need to start protecting their staff. Workers suffer through painful losses and
many health problems; some of the medical problems are life threatening. The issues caused the
chemicals used and the health problems caused seem to be a lot for how long the products last. The
first major medical problem for salon workers are miscarriages and children having problems once
they are born. The chemicals from the products used can affect the baby months before it is due.
Maslin Nir interviewed a woman named Ms. Rocano, and she recounts what her doctor had told her:
When babies are forming in your womb, they absorb everything, and if they are exposed to anything,
it can cause them harm, (Maslin Nir 208). One chemical that is believed to specifically cause these
problems is Dibutyl Phthalate, which, in small amounts, is used in nail polishes and polish hardener.
Another chemical that can affect a woman s pregnancy is Ethyl methacrylate also known as EMA,
which is known to

Present Day Nursing Essay
According to American Nurses Association nursing can be defined as the protection, promotion, and
optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness . (American Nurses Association 2016)
Nursing is a career where a person, should have compassion, a caring heart, and be devoted to their
client care. Sometime person goes into the nursing field for the money, job stability, and because a
person s family member wants them to go into the nursing field. I feel like the future of nursing have
yet to be determined.
The meaning of the future of nursing is advancement of healthcare, and direct patient care. The future
of nursing has many advantages and disadvantages. Some advantages is removing the scope of
practice barriers, the increasing numbers of registered nurses with bachelor degree and doctorate
degree. Some disadvantages of future nursing is working long hours, emotional and mental
exhaustion, stress, frustration, and legal risk for advance practice nurses. The future of nursing
definitely needs assistance from the present day nurses, we as present day nurses should help form and
mold the future nursing field. Present day nurses should help the future nurses by showing the future
nursing our mistake, misconception, dilemma, and unsatisfactory patient care that has plague our time
error. Furthermore, we as present day nurses we can help the future nurses learn more about cultural
sensitivity, cultural competency, and interprofessional collaboration.

Essay on The Defense Mechanism
Defense mechanism, in psychoanalysis, any of a variety of unconscious personality reactions which
the ego uses to protect the conscious mind from threatening feelings and perceptions. Sigmund Freud
first used defense as a psychoanalytic term (1894), but he did not break the notion into categories,
viewing it as a singular phenomenon of repression. His daughter, Anna Freud, expanded on his
theories in the 1930s, distinguishing some of the major defense mechanisms recognized today.
Primary defense mechanisms include repression and denial, which serve to prevent unacceptable ideas
or impulses from entering the conscience. Secondary defense mechanisms generally appearing as an
outgrowth of the primary defense mechanisms include projection, ... Show more content on

The defenses can also give us insight into our own mental processes sometimes mental gymnastics or
contortions. All defenses involve distortions of reality; they are ways of feeling better by fooling
ourselves. If we realized these defenses in our lives, we might handle reality better. Almost all
adjustment books mention these defense mechanisms, even the writers who are arrogantly critical of
Freud. An excellent text about Sigmund and Anna Freud and the ego defenses is by Christopher Monte
(1980).
Repression: shoving thoughts and urges that are unacceptable or distressing into our unconscious. This
is what happens to the unacceptable urges of childhood the ego represses them. Taboo ideas, like
incest, would probably never get into consciousness or, if they got there, they d be quickly repressed.
Sometimes dreams or slips of the tongue or attempts at humor reveal our unconscious motives. For
example, if a teacher ridiculed you in class, you might dream he/she had a horrible auto accident. Or,
trying hard to say something nice to the teacher a few days later, you comment after class, each of
your lectures seems better than the next. Or, if you were unfortunate enough to be asked to introduce
your former teacher at a symposium and said, I d like to prevent huh I mean present Dr.___, some
might guess the truth. All these speculations about repressed feelings are just guesses.
Repression must be distinguished from

The Heterogeneity Of India

The singular thing about India is that you can only speak of it in the plural says Shashi Tharoor. Also,
Amartya Sen in his Magnum Opus The Argumentative Indians talks about the pluralist and tolerant
culture of India. The heterogeneity of India is ,beyond dispute, a source of immense pride for Indians.
Although is there a single definition which encapsulates what is meant by Indians; is can still, and
quite rightly, be disputed. This makes us unique among nations. India is a diverse not only in historical

The Health And Weight Loss
Have you ever wondered why Coca Cola now comes in versions such as light and zero ? If you have,
chances are that you mentally answered your question by saying that the company read your mind and
was fulfilling your desire to lose weight while still indulging in your favorite beverage. However, the
relationship between you and the food giants is quite the opposite. What you think is healthy or
unhealthy is based on research funded by companies that profit off of your food choices, currently,
much of the research regarding health and weight loss is funded by companies such as Coca Cola and
Kellogg therefore therefore, you are the one fulfilling their desire (CBS, 2015).
The idea that large companies and the media dictate our daily lives has slowly become common
knowledge. Therefore, one must be cautious in regards of the sources he or she trusts. For instance,
Steve Blair, who conducts research that supports the idea that obesity in America is due to lack of
physical activity as opposed to calorie consumption has much of his research funded by Coca Cola, a
company which is largely known for its calorie packed drinks and snacks. Moreover, while Blair s
research might be supported by relevant data, so was the research that justified smoking. Nonetheless,
the way data is analyzed can be extremely biased based on who is paying for the collection and
analysis of such data (Freedhoff, 2015).
The increase in the obese population is both an opportunity and a liability to

Heteronormativity Analysis
Before reading this week s readings, I understood heteronormativity as the idea that being
heterosexual is normal and how many believe that is the only way to live even if you are not
heterosexual. I realized how sexuality is much more complicated than I originally thought. Sexuality
is not just one dimensional but there are so many parts to it that people are not aware of.
Being a heterosexual woman, I am stuck between an advantaged group and a disadvantaged group. I
am privileged for being heterosexual in the sense that I will never have to deal with the fear of
someone finding out who I love or expressing that love. I am a woman, so I am disadvantaged when it
comes to men being superior in the eyes of society. I agreed when the reading

Statistical Functionalism And The Wi Thomas Theorem
Sociologists collect data in many different ways: by conducting surveys, secondary analysis,
participant observation, unobtrusive measures, experiments, and by looking at various documents
written by various sources at various times in the past. They can also find their data in movies. Movies
contain as much human behavioral data as newspapers do. Movies are made by and about people in
different social settings and tell us a lot about different and typical aspects of social life. One such
movie that sociologists can collect data from is The Proposal. This particular movie is a prime
example of structural functionalism and the WI Thomas ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

He traces the emergence and development of this dynamic faith and its impact on world history and
politics. He discusses the formation of Islamic belief and practice (law, theology, philosophy, and

Coming to an end at the Muslims of Western Europe, the presence of Muslims in Europe is not a new
force, but a generation of siege and conquer. Over the years Ottomans and other missionaries have put
forward their idea of Islam in many parts of Europe, including Bosnia and Romania.
The Importance of Understanding Muslims and Islam:
Muslims and Islam are two related terms, at the same time different in its application. Let us first talk
about the importance of understanding the term Muslims. Muslims are people who belong to the
religion Islam. Muslims could act in various ways, presenting their actions differently, a Muslim from
India or South Africa. Another good example of a Muslim view would be, the performance of their
political and sect actions.
For example, Saidi Qutb of Egypt believed the west is corrupt in their actions and he has different
view of the West. The other example would be Saudi Arabia s acceptance of United States Forces to
land in the holy place of Islam and welcoming the west.
Our second question deals with the understanding of Islam. The message that this faith brings to the
world is important to understand that Islam claims the holy message of God, a force that has brought a
completion to the writings of the three holy books of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Islam is a
religion that has brought peace,

Sports have always been a major aspect of my life. My passion stems from my own parents who
played sports throughout their lives and encouraged their children to do so. Many of my earliest
memories are of me watching my brother play little league baseball and wanting nothing more than to
be on the field with him. This desire was what prompted me to sign up for softball. I have played
softball since the 3rd grade. Although this may sound cliché, it really has taught me the importance of
working as a team. One player cannot win the game, it takes the team to throw a runner out at first or
sacrifice bunt in order to score a run. From a leadership perspective, I have learned that in order to be
a good leader, you must lead by example first. It

Bad Pride Research Paper
Could too much pride be a bad thing or is pride a good thing? Pride is taking pleasure from the person
s own achievements. I say pride could go both ways. Let s say you are playing a baseball game and
you make a good play, you would have a rush of self accomplishment that makes you feel good
because people are congratulating that play. Pride could also make people do something to make sure
their pride is still there, but I believe that pride is a good thing.
People will be proud of many things such as: owning a home or graduating college because they knew
it was going to be hard but they persevered. Although pride could be a good thing, there are also many
definitions of pride as it states in article 1, John Amodeo Ph.D., MFT Why Pride Is Nothing to Be
Proud Of , A feeling that you are more important or better than other people and inordinate self
esteem. So many people will be so prideful that they won t ask for help or admit that they were wrong.
Pride could have a huge ego inflation that causes overconfidence and arrogance. They could be so full
of themselves that it will be hard to admit you were wrong because they were so desired to be right. ...

Creon In Sophocles Oedipus The King
Oedipus the King is a play that was written by Sophocles around 430 B.C and was performed during
the decline of Athens, shortly after a plague took its course (Kirszner 1466). A main character in this
play is Creon who is portrayed as honest, up front, and even tempered. Creon is the brother of Oedipus
s wife and practically has all the status of a king, without the stress of ruling. This essay is a character
analysis of Creon and how his attributes make him a great ruler. One of Creon s greatest attributes is
his reasonable nature. This quality that is portrayed through his speech is shown during his encounter
with Oedipus where he is accused of conspiracy. He calmly explains to Oedipus that he does not want
the anxieties of being king to untroubled sleep if he has equal power (Sophocles 590 591). Here Creon

Creon keeps his even temper when Oedipus does not. The first occasion in which Creon proves that he
is the voice of reason is when he suggests that he and Oedipus discuss what he had heard from the god
(91 92). He tries to subtly convince Oedipus that they resume the conversation indoors but Oedipus
wants to discuss it out in the public. This public occurrence proves that Creon tries not to expose
information randomly to the public and would rather discuss issues privately. Another part of the play
where Creon shows that he is calm and reasonable is when he coolly revokes any accusations that
Oedipus puts forth and remains calm while Oedipus is throwing false claims at him. When Oedipus
proclaims out loud to Creon that he is the traitor and traitors should be punished, he refutes the
statement by agreeing with it. Creon states that what Oedipus is saying is perfectly just (558 59) but
entirely wrong. He reasons with Oedipus by putting forth the fact that he has equivalent status to a
king and it would make no sense to try to steal the crown or commit a

Technology has advanced our school systems and provides many new and helpful products into the

There is no lack of opportunities for the deaf and hard of hearing in the school system. There are many

Essay On Malcom X
X: A Novel Review
There comes a time in each man s life in which he must decide who he is, who he is going to be and
how he is going to live his life. X: A Novel is about the teenage years of El Hajj Malik El Shabazz
Malcom X, who later went on to become a world renowned, and eventually martyred, human rights
activist. Malcom s daughter; Ilyasah Shabazz along with Kekla Magoon, the co author of this book,
tells her father s story in such a vivid way it feels as though it is possible to be right there with him.
This book shows Malcom struggling with discrimination, starting a new life, and losing himself in the
world of drugs and hustling.
From an awfully young age, Malcom struggled with racism and discrimination, starting out with his
family s house being burned to the ground by The Black Legion/ Ku Klux Klan. This happened
because Malcom s family lived on land that was reserved for white people, even though it was built by
his father s own hands (Shabazz Magoon, 2016, authors note). As he was growing up, there were

part of what was a whole new type of community for him. In Roxbury everyone was genuine and
seemed to be truly living real lives. As Malcom started hanging out there he was able to put the past
behind him and in a way, start fresh. This independence was helpful to him for a little while, but it did

Persecution Of The Puritans
During the late 16th and 17th centuries, the Puritans, or sometimes referred to as precisionists , were
members of a religious reform who cast away the religious ideals of the Church of England under
Queen Elizabeth s rule. The Puritans planned to regulate a different way to worship, along with
censorious moral beliefs, often disregarding the beliefs of the entire English nation in order to instill
their own, leading to their persecution. A blog dated 2008 on the topic of the Puritan persecution
states: They were forced out because they wanted to reform human civilization through religion, to
wipe out poverty, and to make a heaven on Earth in which everyone was free to discover God s will
for themselves . It is evident that the Puritans, who believed in a more Protestant variation of the
Anglican Church, were persecuted and fled, but the exact reasons for this are often disputed. The most
popular trail of thought is that due to the backlash they received, the Puritans could not be maintained
and thus escaped. Other people are entertained by the thought that the Puritans had been banished but
in result, had only a sole thought in mind to reform human civilization through religion somewhere
else, as stated in the blog above. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Olivier Messiaen (1908 1992) played a significant part in the evolution of twentieth century music,

Interpretative challenges presented by theological ideas behind the Quatuor
The Quatuor is based on Revelation 10.1 7, in particular the phrase there shall be no more time. Time
is represented musically in different ways throughout the Quatuor and the addition of this theological
basis to the piece may well have been prompted by the prisoner of war conditions in which he found
himself, in which time might indeed have seemed literally endless, and the Apocalypse close at hand .
It is difficult to know, though, to what extent this theological basis must be considered and portrayed
when performing the Quartet for the End of Time. The words that it is based on appear in the title and
preface, but the challenge to the performer is deciding to what extent the text should be interpreted as
a narrative or programme.
Similar challenges are presented by Romantic music; if a composer does not provide an explicit
programme e.g. Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique it is up to the performer to interpret whether one was
meant and to what extent it should be portrayed in a performance.
The deciding factor in the case of the Quatuor is to consider movements 5 and

Adaptive Radiation And Species Diversification
Adaptive Radiation and Species Diversification
Through a common ancestor, species diverge into new populations which eventually adapt to their
new environments and evolve to become their own sub species and then distinct species. This occurs
through the process of adaptive radiation. The population of an ancestor species radiates outwards to
different ecological niches. From there, these now separate populations adapt to their new habitats and
resources in isolation. This gives them opportunity to evolve and become their own species based off
of genetic changes that make them most fit for their new environments. Examples of these kinds of
adaptations derive from geographic isolation from other species, reduction of gene flow among the ...

From there, the newly inhabited populations performed the process of specialization in which they
adapted to their individual resources and environments. This differentiated the populations and
confirmed the process of speciation as they became their own species in isolation. Specialization can
be found in the different beaks of the finch species. The different sizes and shapes of the beaks are a
result of the different sizes and shapes of the seeds that the populations feed on in their own niches.
For example, bigger and bulkier beaks can help crack open harder seeds, whereas smaller beaks can
be more successful in obtaining smaller seeds. And longer and thinner beaks can help reach into
flowers, whereas medium sized can be more successful in obtaining insects. Because of this separation
in characteristics, these different finches do not continue to breed with each other, resulting in fully
separated species with their own traits. The specialization found between and within the species is a
direct result of the geographic isolation that occurs from adaptive radiation.
Gene flow is the movement of genes among populations that ultimately reduces differences within and
between species. This process keeps populations genetically similar, but when restrictions on gene
flow are present, separation and speciation are able to occur.

The common bile duct originates in the liver and the gallbladder and produces another important
digestive juice called bile. The pancreatic juices and bile that are released into the duodenum, help the
body to digest fats, carbohydrates, and proteins. Endocrine Function: The endocrine component of the
pancreas consists of islet cells that create and release important hormones directly into the
bloodstream. Two of the main pancreatic hormones are insulin, which acts to lower blood sugar, and
glucagon, which acts to raise blood sugar. Maintaining proper blood sugar levels is crucial to the

Willy is a man whose underlying fear of being displaced has created such a powerful unwillingness to
be submissive to his perception of his loss of dignity, that he believes only death itself will secure him
everlasting admiration. In order to fully appreciate how Willy believes that death will bring him the
dignity that he so desperately craves one must first look at the scene in Death of a Salesman , during
which Willy visits his boss Howard. During his visit Willy tells Howard about an elderly salesman he
met named Dave Singleman and how meeting Dave made Willy realize that selling was the greatest
career a man could want. (Miller 1801) When he died and he died the death of a salesman , Willy tells
Howard, hundreds of salesmen and buyers were at his funeral...In those days there was personality in
it, Howard. There was respect, and comradeship, and gratitude in it (Miller 1801). This quote

image of his rightful. Examples of this can be seen on pages 1809 through 1810 of the play. This is the

requires frameworks and structures, which would enhance customer recovery inside the following
more than four decades (45 years). On a few events, the association fell beneath its commercial center
opponents; for illustrations, it encountered a total strain or weight on the costs other than the capacity
of getting brand items to meet or satisfy the necessities of the market (Fortuna and Mohorčič, 2015).
Prior to the demise of the predecessor of Roger Cahill, the cell phone division experienced repetitive
chips improvement. With an aggregate miss on the center commercial center storage hardware in
tablets, BoldFlash s opponent got an aggressive edge over the organization inside the essential
commercial center. The essential driver of this misfortune was credited to Harrison, who was
exceptionally oppressive or dictatorial. He advanced a complaint custom inside the organization where
each specialist attempted so much shielding themselves from his iron fist sort of administration.
Roger Cahill, a free, amicable, and liberated individual, saw this as the rule reason for struggle inside
the partnership. While working in the fundamental workplaces, he didn t know of the desires from
different hierarchical offices under his administration. For every one of the divisions under his

Arguments Against Vaccination
Vaccinations occurs when a health provider purposefully administer a virus or a bacteria into the body
through injections. Vaccines only contain a small amount of weakened virus. This procedure gets done
in order to prepare the bodies immune system for future infections. The immune system can recognize
the virus and determine the right tactic to destroy it, before it takes a toll on the body. Exposing the
body to a virus can potentially save it from getting harmed from diseases like the whooping cough,
chickenpox, influenza, polio, and many more life threatening illnesses. Even with the minor and
infrequent side effects from vaccinations, several parents refrain from vaccinating their children. They
do not want to put their children s lives at risk and would rather take the chance with the diseases that
may occur without the proper vaccinations. The negative effects of vaccinations are simply too risky

Several religions protest against vaccinations due to the fact that it violates the belief systems of their
respective religions. For the Christian religion, they disapprove vaccinations because the founder of
vaccines, Mary Baker Eddy, once stated that the calm Christian mind is a better preventative of
contagion than a drug, or than any other possible sanative method (Should Any Vaccines Be Required
for Children?). Obviously, this blasphemy angered many faithful Christians and began to believe that
vaccinations are unholy. Similarly, the Amish community do not believe in the use of vaccinations.
Ordinarily, the Amish community live a quaint lifestyle without any technology or advanced medicine.
So, vaccinations are out of the question as well. The Amish community even believe that vaccinations
actually weaken the immune system. The religious rights of these communities give reason for parents

Assault On Campus
How Should Sexual Assaults On Campus Be Handled? When congress passed the gender equality law
known as Title IX (1972) more than 40 years ago, no one expected it to make colleges responsible for
handling sexual assault. Title IX was a stealth law aimed at helping women get through the doors of
higher education and is now being interpreted to require colleges to investigate and resolve students
reports of rape, determining whether their classmates are responsible for assault and, if so, what the
punishment should be. (Wilson, Paragraph 1 2) The term Sexual Assault was defined by the district as
any type of sexual contact or behavior that occurs without the explicit consent of the recipient. With
that definition, the term on campus was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
McCaskill, who is organizing the three roundtables through her Subcommittee on Financial
Contracting Oversight, is teaming up with Senators Kirsten Gillibrand of New York and Richard
Blumenthal of Connecticut to better understand how colleges and universities handle sexual assaults
on campus, as the Senators consider legislative solutions. Participating in the roundtables will be
current or former student survivors, campus safety and sexual assault experts, sex crimes prosecutors,
university law enforcement, victim advocacy and response organizations, and university
administrators. These roundtables are the next step in our in depth look at the practices our campus
communities have in place to protect students and bring perpetrators to justice and how we can fix,
strengthen and enforce them, said McCaskill, a former courtroom prosecutor of sex crimes. It s clear
we have a lot of work to do to tackle the systemic issues that prevent victims from reporting these
crimes, that prevent schools from effectively protecting these survivors, and prevent clear and proper
enforcement of federal law. These meetings will help us understand, from those who know best, what
more we can do for students, administrators, and law enforcement to give them the tools they need to
curb this epidemic. (McCaskill, Paragraph 4) With all of this happening many procedures have been
suggested and are all getting tested out. The consequences of sexual assault are potentially very
serious. An immediate concern is a physical injury, which may be extensive enough to require medical
treatment or hospitalization.11 Pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including HIV,
are additional concerns.12 Emotional damage may be serious and equally requiring of treatment.
Sexual assault may affect students academic achievement

  • 2. Newsworthiness of Child Abuse Cases Society is now what Downing, Mohammadi and Mohammadi (1990) would call a media culture , this is where the perceptions and images of reality are often shaped by the actions and decisions of news editors and producers (Surrette, 1992). The role of the media according to O Shaughnessy and Stadler (2008) is to give the public an insight on what is happening in the world and to make sense of that information to the public. The main focus of this essay will be looking two main concepts which are newsworthiness and the dark figure of crime, relating 5 news articles that are centred around child abuse that have featured in the New Zealand Herald and stuff.co.nz. The media plays an important role in society by creating and shaping society s attitudes about most current issues including child abuse. In New Zealand, as well as in the international media, the physical abuse of a child regularly features in the newspapers, magazines, radio and television (Merchant, 2010). When it comes to the public understanding of child abuse, this is influenced by the knowledge that they gain through reading newspapers or mass media like the television or radio. Kitzinger (2004) states that our individual view and sense of the world are a social construct and the media are an important resource to help us construct that world view. The way that child abuse is reported in the media has become what you would call entertainment where there seems to be an incline towards dramatising child abuse in a ... From a BBQ in East Tennessee to eating Chow Mein in China, food holds a deep cultural meaning and power. It has the means to be a weapon of war, and is a force of development. It is an organizer and a tool to bring people together, and can be influenced by our social status. Needless to say, as this world moves into a more modern way of life, the traditional ways of living are visually fading away. Firstly, there is a highly specialized, industrial system of food production. (Sociology on the menu) From which we can derive that most of the food production for the modern market is concealed. Secondly, distribution is through the commercial market; whatever our status, as long as we have the money, food is readily accessible. Growing up I was raised in a Christian home and learned very little about any other religion including other monotheistic religion. Judaism is the religion that I knew the least about and decided that the best possible way for me to learn more was to experience it. I had only ever heard of Judaism in a comical or historical way. I chose to go to a Synagogue to further my knowledge and experience Judaism first hand. I called ahead to Temple Sinai in Denver and arranged a time to visit with Rabbi Richard Rheins. It just so happened that a class from Red Rocks was also planning a visit and I was encouraged to join them as well. I was able to attend a special service on November 11th, Veterans Day. This service was very different than what I had expected. It was a Shabbat service that included a naming, an honoring of veterans, as well as two bat mitzvah announcements. I had to dress in business casual attire and received snacks and drinks at the end called nosh. • 6. Rhetorical Analysis Of The First Rhetorical Strategy The first rhetorical strategy I used in my descriptive paragraphs was word choice. I bring this up first because without it, the reader has a vague perception of the story. Although if used accordingly, it revives the story and the reader can fully grasp what you want them to see. The best use of this in my positive paragraph was spacious . I wanted the reader to visualize a vast and roomy drive thru while reading my paragraph. Although I could ve used other words like large , or big they wouldn t have had the same effect because a place can be big and still be constricting. As for my negative paragraph my best word choice would have to be snatched . I used snatched in this context because I believe it gave readers the most negative visual about how the money is taken from the customer s hand. Other words that I could have used like taken or grab would have failed to leave the same impression of negativity in the reader. Sentence structure is another rhetorical strategy that also leaves an impression on the reader. Sentence structure is an important component of anything meant to be read by others because without sentence structure things can skipped be while reading and not even realized by the reader. By putting the right detail first or last it can greatly affect how that single detailed is retained or forgotten by the reader. In the first sentence of my positive paragraph I wrote, Whether on the brink of starvation or just looking for a light snack . I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Reading has many lifelong benefits; therefore, reading is very fundamental, reading can make some people calmer, and a brain can stay sharp. Reading is very fundamental. If people read a lot, other places in the brain will increase as well. In the article The Long Term Effects of Skipping Your Reading Homework, Pamela state s, Reading makes kids better at math. A british study found that students who read for pleasure not only had a better vocabulary and spelling which is to be expected but that those students were also more proficient in math. It makes sense that reading helps kids at math because if they are good at one subject, then they can be good at multiple subjects. When people read, it can improve their spelling and vocabulary because the more words they read, the more words they could learn. If someone doesn t know a word, then they might look the word up and figure out what the word means. Then they will possibly have learned a new word. Pamela DeLoatch wrote that reading can boost self esteem and communication skills, One educated provider says that since students who read usually have enhanced vocabulary, they can often find the words to express themselves and do not feel as frustrated and angry. Sigmund Freud first used defense as a psychoanalytic term (1894), but he did not break the notion into categories, viewing it as a singular phenomenon of repression. His daughter, Anna Freud, expanded on his theories in the 1930s, distinguishing some of the major defense mechanisms recognized today. An excellent text about Sigmund and Anna Freud and the ego defenses is by Christopher Monte (1980). Repression: shoving thoughts and urges that are unacceptable or distressing into our unconscious. This is what happens to the unacceptable urges of childhood the ego represses them. Taboo ideas, like incest, would probably never get into consciousness or, if they got there, they d be quickly repressed. Sometimes dreams or slips of the tongue or attempts at humor reveal our unconscious motives. For example, if a teacher ridiculed you in class, you might dream he/she had a horrible auto accident. Or, trying hard to say something nice to the teacher a few days later, you comment after class, each of your lectures seems better than the next. Or, if you were unfortunate enough to be asked to introduce your former teacher at a symposium and said, I d like to prevent huh I mean present Dr.___, some might guess the truth. If you have, chances are that you mentally answered your question by saying that the company read your mind and was fulfilling your desire to lose weight while still indulging in your favorite beverage. What you think is healthy or unhealthy is based on research funded by companies that profit off of your food choices, currently, much of the research regarding health and weight loss is funded by companies such as Coca Cola and Kellogg therefore therefore, you are the one fulfilling their desire (CBS, 2015). The idea that large companies and the media dictate our daily lives has slowly become common knowledge. Therefore, one must be cautious in regards of the sources he or she trusts. For instance, Steve Blair, who conducts research that supports the idea that obesity in America is due to lack of physical activity as opposed to calorie consumption has much of his research funded by Coca Cola, a company which is largely known for its calorie packed drinks and snacks. Moreover, while Blair s research might be supported by relevant data, so was the research that justified smoking. • 30. Persecution Of The Puritans During the late 16th and 17th centuries, the Puritans, or sometimes referred to as precisionists , were members of a religious reform who cast away the religious ideals of the Church of England under Queen Elizabeth s rule. The Puritans planned to regulate a different way to worship, along with censorious moral beliefs, often disregarding the beliefs of the entire English nation in order to instill their own, leading to their persecution. A blog dated 2008 on the topic of the Puritan persecution states: They were forced out because they wanted to reform human civilization through religion, to wipe out poverty, and to make a heaven on Earth in which everyone was free to discover God s will for themselves . It is evident that the Puritans, who believed in a more Protestant variation of the Anglican Church, were persecuted and fled, but the exact reasons for this are often disputed. The most popular trail of thought is that due to the backlash they received, the Puritans could not be maintained and thus escaped. From there, these now separate populations adapt to their new habitats and resources in isolation. From there, the newly inhabited populations performed the process of specialization in which they adapted to their individual resources and environments. This differentiated the populations and confirmed the process of speciation as they became their own species in isolation. Specialization can be found in the different beaks of the finch species. The different sizes and shapes of the beaks are a result of the different sizes and shapes of the seeds that the populations feed on in their own niches. For example, bigger and bulkier beaks can help crack open harder seeds, whereas smaller beaks can be more successful in obtaining smaller seeds. And longer and thinner beaks can help reach into flowers, whereas medium sized can be more successful in obtaining insects. Because of this separation in characteristics, these different finches do not continue to breed with each other, resulting in fully separated species with their own traits. The specialization found between and within the species is a direct result of the geographic isolation that occurs from adaptive radiation. Gene flow is the movement of genes among populations that ultimately reduces differences within and between species. This process keeps populations genetically similar, but when restrictions on gene flow are present, separation and speciation are able to occur. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
