BASIC CAMERA FUNCTION & CONTROLS
FOCUS
Focus is important as not having a lens focus means moving
images will come out blurry. Turning the lens of a camera
focus’ it by doing this you are moving the lens closer or
further away from the film surface to get the best picture.
There are two types focus options:
Auto- Focus on the middle part of the scene
Manual- You control the focus.
Clear/ Sharp
Blurry/ Fuzzy
EXPOSURE
Exposure is the volume of light on the scene.
Auto exposure- Adjust the exposure needed in the picture/
video.
Manual exposure- When using the camera you can adjust it
to the best setting for you.
The shutter speed and focusing screen is what adjusts the
right light or brightness
and darkness.
WHITE BALANCE
White balance is the changing of colour balance in pictures making
it warmer/cooler.
Auto- Makes the best judgement of the best balance for the picture.
Outdoor option- Natural light
Indoor option- Given light from the surroundings
Open push- Adapts to the light/ white balance you need.
SOUND
Audio/ Sound should be measured with headphones. It
important you get the right volume as this plays a major
part in productions. Sometimes sound can be recorded
after the recording (voice over).
COMPOSITION
Composing the frame making sure the background/ set tells the
story you are trying to get across. Making sure the background
is appropriate to the scene and it is relevant. Finally arranging
pictures and elements in the correct sequence to make sure it
suits the goal of you work.
Rule of thirds: Is the breaking down of pictures into 9 parts the
four circles in the picture below will be where the main parts of
the picture is, so it is key to place the most important parts of
the image in the dots/ corners.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
There are many rules when filming in the
studio and on location because they are
expensive equipment so when on a location
people can steal equipment. In the studio there are wires
everywhere an sometimes a lot of people in the room so have to
be careful not to injure yourself or anyone around you and also
not to break equipment in the studio. No food or drinks should
be allowed in the studio especially around electrical things as it
will be a hazards also risking the safety of yourself and others around.
