Some species have colonized abyssal depths near hydrothermal vents. The South African white mussel exceptionally doesn't bind itself to rocks but burrows into sandy beaches extending two tubes above the sand surface for ingestion of food and water and exhausting wastes.
Freshwater clams inhabit permanent lakes, rivers, canals and streams throughout the world except in the polar regions. They require a constant source of cool, clean water. They prefer water with a substantial mineral content, using calcium carbonate to build their shells.

The fishes belong to the most numerous and diversified group among vertebrates. They dominate the water bodies of the world through a variety of morphological, physiological and behavioral adaptations. They have been in existence for more than 450 million years. A total of 24618 species of fishes belonging to 482 families and 4258 genera have so far been described. About 58% of the fish species are marine while 41% are freshwater inhabitants and 1% migrants. In our Indian region alone, there are 2,500 species of which 930 are inhabitants of freshwater and the rest live in the seas. In other words, India harbours 11.5% of the fish fauna so far known in the world. There are over 800 living species of sharks and rays, 30 species of chimaeras and ratfishes, 6 species of lung fishes, 1 species of coelacanths, 36 species of long ray finned bichirs, sturgeons and paddlefishes. The Neopterygii are the rest of the known species of modem fishes. All these fishes inhabit various niches in the aquatic environment. The diversified habitats of fishes include open oceans, deep oceanic trenches, nearshore waters, saline coastal embayments, brackishwaters, estuaries, intermittent streams, tiny desert springs, vernal pools, cold mountain streams, lakes, ponds, etc.
Salinity is one of the environmental factors that influence the growth performance of many fish. Salinity effects have been studied in several species of fish in ponds .
Reproduction is a fundamental biological process which enables continuation of species. In fisheries biology, reproduction assumes greater significance to understand sexual
dimorphism, process of maturation, size or age of maturity, breeding season, spawning area, sexual segregation, migration, fecundity, embryonic and larval development and
recruitment. Most of the management strategies in capture fisheries are based on reference points that are the manifestations of reproductive biology. In aquaculture,
knowledge of reproductive biology of a fish is essential for hatchery production of fish feeds.

Introduction
Biodiversity, short for biological diversity, includes the genetic variation between all organisms, species, and
populations, and all of their complex communities and ecosystems. It also reflects to the interrelatedness of
genes, species, and ecosystems and their interactions with the environment. Biodiversity is not evenly distrib-
uted across the globe; rather, it varies greatly and even varies within regions. It is partially ruled by climate,
whereas tropical regions can support more species than a polar climate. In whole, biodiversity represents
variation within three levels:
• Species diversity
• Ecosystem diversity
• Genetic diversity
It should be noted that diversity at one of these levels may
not correspond with diversity within other levels. The degree
of biodiversity, and thus the health of an ecosystem, is im-
pacted when any part of that ecosystem becomes endan-
gered or extinct.
The term species refers to a group of similar organisms that
reproduce among themselves. Species diversity refers to
the variation within and between populations of species, as
well as between different species. Sexual reproduction criti-
cally contributes to the variation within species. For exam-
ple, a pea plant that is cross-fertilized with another pea plant
can produce offspring with four different looks! This genetic
mixing creates the diversity seen today.

Biodiversity
Ecosystem diversity examines the different habitats, biological communities, and ecological processes in
the biosphere, as well as variation within an individual ecosystem. The differences in rainforests and deserts
represent the variation between ecosystems. The physical characteristics that determine ecosystem diversity
are complex, and include biotic and abiotic factors.

These organisms live in setting, where population level
below the maximum no. that environment can support
the carrying capacity.
Their nos are going exponentially high at the
maximum rate
Organism tend to be small, short lived and
opportunistic .
They grow through irregular boom and bust in a
population cycle
5. R- selected species like insect, bacteria and largest
species such as frog, rats
They are capable of rapid growth.
They need favorable condition for their growth.
These r- selected species mature later in life and have
fewer offspring with longer gestation times.
6. Habitat in an ecosystem
Ecologist use the term habitat to mean the role that
the organism live and term ecological niche to mean
that the role of organism plays in the ecosystem
Habitat is the “address” and Niche is the “profession”
7. Ecological niche
Different species interact in different ways.
Interaction can have positive, negative and neutral
impact on the species involved.
Each species in an ecosystem occupies a niche
Niche can be defined as interaction of all the ranges of
tolerance, under which an organisms can live.
8. Niche can be easier to quantify and analyze.
It can be described as specific ranges of variables like
temperature, latitude and altitude.
For example: African fisheagle occupies very similar
ecological niche to the American bald eagle.
The full range of habitat types in which the species can
exist and reproduce without any competition from
other species is called fundamental niche.
9. Carrying capacity
Carrying capacity of environment varies from region to
region depending on population pressure.
Their dependences on food, water, energy, raw
material requirement, waste production.
Carrying capacity of environment is the threshold
limit of use of that ecosystem without damaging the
systems.
10. Every ecosystems has its resources that are used for
economic development for survival and for the habitat
creation.
Regenerating them over the period of time that are
temporary and not exceeding threshold damage limit.
