Birds are warm-blooded vertebrates that have several distinguishing characteristics. Their forelimbs are modified into wings for flight, while their hind limbs are used for walking and swimming. Birds have lightweight, hollow bones filled with air cavities called pneumatic bones that help reduce weight for flight. They also have feathers that reduce air resistance and flexible neck vertebrae. Most birds excrete uric acid through their kidneys and intestines, though some like hummingbirds excrete ammonia and creatine. They lack a urinary bladder and excrete through a cloaca, a posterior opening used for excretion, mating and egg-laying.
