Vertebrates are characterized by having a backbone, skull, and internal skeleton. They include fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. Fish live exclusively in water and have fins and scales. Amphibians can live on land and in water, are ectothermic, and have moist skin. Reptiles are amniotes that lay shelled eggs and most have scales and four legs. Birds are endothermic, lay shelled eggs, have feathers, beaks, and wings. Mammals are endothermic and feed their young with milk produced by mammary glands.
