This document discusses audience theory and profiles for different media properties. It provides examples of primary and secondary audiences for three different films - one that would appeal to young male teenagers, one to older kids and teenagers of all genders, and one that could appeal to children but also draw in adults. It also defines several key concepts in media and communications like hypodermic needle theory, uses and gratifications, consumer generated content, and psychographics.
2. • Primary Audience
– The primary audience for this
film could be young male
teenagers, mostly by the
relatable looking teenage
character.
• Secondary Audience
– Adults could be appealed by
how sci-fi the film looks.
Audience Profile
3. Audience Profile
• Primary Audience
– Older kids and maybe young
teenagers, mostly of all genders
since one of the characters is a girl,
and the characters are
superheroes.
• Secondary Audience
– The parents who grew up with the
Spider-Man Marvel comics could
enjoy it.
4. Audience Profile
• Primary Audience
– This could appeal to
children for its more
whimsical design.
• Secondary Audience
– Adults could be drawn
in by the more sci-fi
elements used.
5. Hypodermic Needle
• Definition
– Basically the way the media manages to make
anything believable to an audience.
• Example
– Nazi propaganda to make Germans think Jewish
people were all bad.
6. Uses and Gratifications Information
• Helps people understand the reasons people like to
go and seek out specific media to help satisfy certain
needs for them.
• I usually seek out specific media to help escape
reality with the different wacky stories, characters
and locations in pieces of media I enjoy like video
games or movies and tv shows.
7. Uses and Gratifications Personal
Identity
• People can recognise the person or product,
usually role models, characters or celebrities that
people will want to often take inspiration from or
choose to mimic and copy their characteristics.
This can be used to sell a product, or help spread
a important message to people.
• I usually look towards role models as inspirational
for how my personality is, or can be.
8. Uses and Gratifications Integration
and Social Interaction
• Being able to identify and talk to other people
out in public.
• Knowing what so say
• Trying to be as active with others as possible
• I use social interaction as a way to get
information or help off of others.
9. Uses and Gratifications Entertainment
• How much you enjoy a tv show, movie,
magazine, news article, poster or video game.
• I usually use a video game to escape from
reality and enter a world where I can do stuff I
wish I could do in real life but cannot.
10. Consumer Generated Content
• Example
– The audience who will go out of their way to buy
products from a company, as well as produce the
content themselves, such as through fan art or fan
games, or their own indie productions.
• What are the advantages to media producers?
– They make money, as well as see the creativity off of
other people.
• Why would the audience generate content?
– To show their own creativity, skills and create a
portfolio of their own work.
11. Psychographics
• Belongers
– They want to fit in, so they will try to get the new
trendy item to try and fit in with everyone else around
them, example, buying and playing a new popular
video game.
• Achievers
– Ambitious about succeeding. They try to get the more
luxurious things to show what they are able to buy
and afford with their successful lifestyle.
• Emulators
– People who want to succeed, but are missing out on
the work ethic and or the skillset. Usually buy knock-
offs and fake versions of existing luxurious brands to
appeal successful and rich, when they are not.
12. Psychographics
• Balanced
– Try earn as much money as possible, and try to spend it on benefitting
mankind and donating to charities to help others.
• Needs Driven
– They do not have much money, made poor choices or was brought up
in a poverty stricken family. They buy items and products they feel
they need, the essentials, food, drinks, clothing, etc.
• Socially Conscious
- A: Aim to achieve greatness, ambitious, and go out of their way to
help others as much as they can.
- B: Usually try to be as self-sufficient as possible. They see the world
as doom and gloom, and usually have very strong opinions on mass
consumptions of certain products.
