Audience
Theory
Rose Lyons
• Primary Audience - A
film like The BFG would have a
primary audience of children
from toddlers to 14-year-olds
because it’s from a children’s
book.
• Secondary Audience –
The secondary audience of BFG
would be adults who take
children to the cinema. Because
they might have grown up with
the book
Audience Profile
Audience Profile
• Primary Audience . A
James Bond film would have a
primary audience of adults of
men. Because their gun fights,
posh cars and chasers.
• Secondary Audience -
The secondary audience of
James Bond would be women
who go to the cinema with
men. The character is a pin up
for women, and there’s glamour
as well.
Audience Profile
• Primary Audience – A
film like Toy Story would have a
primary audience of children
also from toddlers and 14 year
olds because it’s animated and
has a lot of children in it.
• Secondary Audience –
The secondary audience is
adults who take the children to
the cinema because they
would’ve imagined there toys
coming to life when they were
kids.
Hypodermic Needle
• Definition – When the audience immediately
believes what the media says.
• Example – People thought they were running
out of petrol because it was reported on the
news that there was going to be a petrol
shortage.
Uses and Gratifications Information
• If I wanted to know anything about history, I
would search on Google using the keywords
then I would click on the first website however
if that didn’t have the information, I’ll look on
Wikipedia or a website. If I didn’t know how to
do something for example arts and crafts, you
can look on YouTube.
Uses and Gratifications Personal
Identity
• I listen to Owl City a lot because I like and
enjoy their music and I like the lyrics because
they’re happy and enjoyable I like them as a
young person and they’re also popular with
adult people.
Uses and Gratifications Integration and
Social Interaction
• During lockdown I used WhatsApp to speak
and message my dad. I used Teams to speak to
college and take part in lessons and I could
share documents online to do my work.
Uses and Gratifications Entertainment
• I use YouTube and Netflix to keep myself
entertained on a TV and I use my phone and
headphones to listen to music. Also on TV I
watch Brit box, Disney + and The Crown.
Consumer Generated Content
• Example – The audience is contributing and
creating stuff to put on YouTube and Instagram.
• What are the advantages to media
producers? They are getting all this content for free
and they get a good variety of content also getting
popularity or a job.
• Why would the audience generate content?
They will achieve fame and popularity if it’s a company
they will sell more products and get more money.
Psychographics
• Belongers – Most common psychographic personality types
which connects to family and friends, they don't want to stand out
or be different.
• Achievers – Linked to people who are very ambitious, busy,
don't like time wasting. They like to be busy in life and like to own
modern and up to date products.
• Emulators – They want to achieve everything but are missing
either the work ethic or skillset. However, they make expensive
products they can't afford, and purchase knocked off products that
seem a success.
Psychographics
• Balanced – Eager to succeed and do well and earn a lot of money, but
they like to give a lot of their money away to charities.
• Needs Driven – Those who struggle with money if they have poor
choices or are poor. They purchase items which they think will do them
good and respond to if they are lost or missed an opportunity.
• Socially Conscious
- A: Achievement is greatness for the world and not just for themselves.
Linked to unselfish people who care and do things for others and society.
- B: People who look on the bad side of life and have strong opinions to
themselves about mass production.
