Oral Presentation
Listeners have one chance to hear your talk and can't "re-read"
when they get confused
Oral communication is different from written communication
Know the needs of your audience and match your contents to their needs
Some are experts in your sub-area, some are experts in the
general area, and others know little or nothing
Think about your audience
Leave your audience with a clear picture of the gist of your
contribution
Think about your rhetorical goal(s)
The Purpose of Your Talk…
To impress your audience with your brainpower
…is NOT:
To tell them all you know about your topic
To present all the technical details
Do Not Apologize
“I didn’t have time to prepare this talk properly”
“My computer broke down, so I don’t have
the results I expected”
“I don’t have time to tell you about this”
“I don’t feel qualified to address this
audience”
Pre -Talk Symptoms
1
•Inability to breathe
2
•Inability to stand up (legs give way)
3
•Inability to operate brain
Be Enthusiastic !!!
How to present your talk

3
Enthusiasm
 If you do not seem excited by your idea, why should the
audience be?
 It wakes them up
 Enthusiasm makes people dramatically more receptive
THE IMPORTANT POINT IS NOT TO SPEAK IN THE
SAME, FLAT, MONOTONOUS VOICE THROUGHOUT
YOUR PRESENTATION
PRACTICE IS ESSENTIAL TO IMPROVE THE
PRESENTATION SKILLS
Presentation
Introduction
 Say what you are going to say
Body
 Say what you have to say
Conclusions
 Then say what you have just said

Title/Author/Affiliation (1 Slide)
The Gist of the Problem
(What is the one idea you want people to leave with? This is
the "abstract" of an oral presentation.)
(1 Slide)
Outline
Give talk structure.
(1 Slide)
Problem Statement
Most researchers overestimate how much the audience knows
about the problem they are attacking.
(1-2 Slides)
Related Work (2 Slides)
Presentation Planning
Method(s) Adopted (1 Slide)
Results
Present key results and key insights. This is main body of the talk.
Its internal structure varies greatly as a function of the researcher's
contribution.
(4-6 Slides)
Summary (1 Slide)
Future Work (1 Slide)
Backup Slides
Optionally have a few slides ready (not counted in your talk total) to
answer expected questions. (Likely question areas: ideas glossed
over, shortcomings of methods or results, and future work.)
(0-3 Slides)
Delivery
• Delivery is as important as content
• Speak clearly. Don’t shout or whisper
• Be natural
• Deliberately pause at the key points
• Avoid jokes
• Use your hands to emphasize point, but avoid too much hand waving.
• Look at the audience, but, do not fix on an individual
• Don’t face the display screen behind you

Visual Aids
Spend enough time to create good visual aids, but do
not overload your audience’s brains
Extremely effective means of communication
Keep information on each slide, to a minimum
Good visuals are Visible, Clear, and Simple
Should be legible to most distant viewer
Visual Aids (Cont…)
Enlarge type-written copy
Number of words per line = 4 to 5 only
Use 18 size font or larger
Focus on one idea per visual
Lines per visual = less than 10
Simplify format, design, color, etc.
Finishing
Absolutely without fail,
FINISH on time
 Audiences get restive and essentially stop listening when your time is up.
 Continuing is very counter productive.
 Simply truncate and conclude
 Do not say “would you like me to go on?” (it’s hard to say “no thanks”)

TOTAL Presentation Skill Test Within next 2 minutes give rating to each statement for yourself. Never 01 Point Rarely 02 Point Sometimes 03 Point Often 04 Point Always 05 Point Sr. No. Statement Rating 1. Can you describe the objective of your presentation in one sentence to include the action you expect your listeners to take as a result of your presentation? 2. Do you have a clear structure to your presentation in order to make it easy for your listeners to follow your information and ideas? 3. Do you discover, develop, and tell vivid, relevant stories that fit your key points to your listeners’situation? 4. Do you make your presentation interactive? 5. Do you use non-words like hmm, ah, er, you know, you see, etc. during your presentation? TOTAL PRACTICE IS ESSENTIAL TO IMPROVE THE PRESENTATION SKILLS ORAL COMMUNICATION CAN NOT BE TAUGHT
  • 2. 15-10-2020 2 Presentation Outline Importance of oral presentation The purpose of presentation How to present your talk Pre-talk symptoms Presentation planning Visual aids Tips for effective oral presentation Oral Presentation Listeners have one chance to hear your talk and can't "re-read" when they get confused Oral communication is different from written communication Know the needs of your audience and match your contents to their needs Some are experts in your sub-area, some are experts in the general area, and others know little or nothing Think about your audience Leave your audience with a clear picture of the gist of your contribution Think about your rhetorical goal(s) The Purpose of Your Talk… To impress your audience with your brainpower …is NOT: To tell them all you know about your topic To present all the technical details Do Not Apologize “I didn’t have time to prepare this talk properly” “My computer broke down, so I don’t have the results I expected” “I don’t have time to tell you about this” “I don’t feel qualified to address this audience” Pre -Talk Symptoms 1 •Inability to breathe 2 •Inability to stand up (legs give way) 3 •Inability to operate brain Be Enthusiastic !!! How to present your talk
  • 3. 15-10-2020 3 Enthusiasm  If you do not seem excited by your idea, why should the audience be?  It wakes them up  Enthusiasm makes people dramatically more receptive THE IMPORTANT POINT IS NOT TO SPEAK IN THE SAME, FLAT, MONOTONOUS VOICE THROUGHOUT YOUR PRESENTATION PRACTICE IS ESSENTIAL TO IMPROVE THE PRESENTATION SKILLS Presentation Introduction  Say what you are going to say Body  Say what you have to say Conclusions  Then say what you have just said Presentation Planning Title/Author/Affiliation (1 Slide) The Gist of the Problem (What is the one idea you want people to leave with? This is the "abstract" of an oral presentation.) (1 Slide) Outline Give talk structure. (1 Slide) Problem Statement Most researchers overestimate how much the audience knows about the problem they are attacking. (1-2 Slides) Related Work (2 Slides) Presentation Planning Method(s) Adopted (1 Slide) Results Present key results and key insights. This is main body of the talk. Its internal structure varies greatly as a function of the researcher's contribution. (4-6 Slides) Summary (1 Slide) Future Work (1 Slide) Backup Slides Optionally have a few slides ready (not counted in your talk total) to answer expected questions. (Likely question areas: ideas glossed over, shortcomings of methods or results, and future work.) (0-3 Slides) Delivery • Delivery is as important as content • Speak clearly. Don’t shout or whisper • Be natural • Deliberately pause at the key points • Avoid jokes • Use your hands to emphasize point, but avoid too much hand waving. • Look at the audience, but, do not fix on an individual • Don’t face the display screen behind you
  • 4. 15-10-2020 4 Visual Aids Spend enough time to create good visual aids, but do not overload your audience’s brains Extremely effective means of communication Keep information on each slide, to a minimum Good visuals are Visible, Clear, and Simple Should be legible to most distant viewer Visual Aids (Cont…) Enlarge type-written copy Number of words per line = 4 to 5 only Use 18 size font or larger Focus on one idea per visual Lines per visual = less than 10 Simplify format, design, color, etc. Finishing Absolutely without fail, FINISH on time  Audiences get restive and essentially stop listening when your time is up.  Continuing is very counter productive.  Simply truncate and conclude  Do not say “would you like me to go on?” (it’s hard to say “no thanks”) Tips for Oral Presentation 1 • Know your material thoroughly 2 • Practice and rehearse your speech at home 3 • Know what your strong and weak points are 4 • Emphasize your strong points during your presentation 5 • When you are presenting in front of an audience, you are performing as an actor on a stage Tips (Cont…) 6 • Look pleasant, enthusiastic, confident, proud, but not arrogant 7 • Dress appropriately for the occasion 8 • Speak slowly, enunciate clearly, and show appropriate emotion and feeling relating to your topic 9 • Vary the tone of your voice and dramatize if necessary 10 • If a microphone is available, adjust and adapt your voice accordingly. Tips (Cont…) 11 • Establish rapport with your audience 12 • Body language is important 13 • Standing, walking or moving about with appropriate hand gesture or facial expression 14 • Speak with conviction as if you really believe in what you are saying 15 • Do not read from notes
  • 5. 15-10-2020 5 Tips (Cont…) 16 • Maintain sincere eye contact with your audience 17 • Speak to your audience, listen to their questions, respond to their reactions, adjust and adapt 18 • Remember that communication is the key to a successful presentation 19 • Pause.Allow yourself and your audience a little time to reflect and think 20 • Add humor whenever appropriate and possible Tips (Cont…) 21 •Audio-visual aids: Be sure all necessary equipment is set up and in good working order prior to the presentation 22 •Have handouts ready and give them out at the appropriate time 23 •Take care for proper font size, color scheme, layout, figures, graphs, illustrations, etc. 24 •Know when to STOP talking dhaval.pujari@nirmauni.ac.in Send Your Feedback To, THANK YOU
