Essay on A Society of Oppression in A Handmaid s Tale
A Society of Oppression in A Handmaid s Tale
As the saying goes, history repeats itself. If one of the goals of Margaret Atwood was to prove this
particular point, she certainly succeeded in her novel A Handmaid s Tale. In her Note to the Reader,
she writes, The thing to remember is that there is nothing new about the society depicted in The
Handmaiden s Tale except the time and place. All of the things I have written about ...have been done
before, more than once... (316). Atwood seems to choose only the most threatening, frightening, and
atrocious events in history to parallel her book by specifically the enslavement of African Americans
in the United States. She traces the development of this institution, but from the ... Show more content

That is what you have to do before you kill, I thought. You have to create an it, where there was none

Once the oppressed group is demoted to it, or property, freedoms can be taken away. Property cannot
read or write for example, or leave their respective grounds a plantation in the case of slaves, or the
Center in the case of the Handmaids without an escort or master. Segregation is also an issue, as
blacks could not sit with the whites at church or eat at the same dinner table, the Handmaids were not
permitted to sit with the Wives at assemblies or eat at their banquet tables. In addition, a Handmaid
does not have any claim on her own child, who belongs to her masters, the Commander, and his wife,
just as a slave mother would have no right to keep her child from her master if he wished to sell it.
Finally, there is the renting of women to men, not unlike the renting of slaves to farmers, as property
of the owner (of course the rent money does not go to the worker; what could an it need with such a
human invention?). As the Commander demonstrates to Offred when she enters the bordello, He slips
around my wrist a tag...like tags for airport luggage. If anyone asks you, say your an evening rental, he
says... (233). An earlier Commander set this trend by announcing, Let women learn silence, with all
subjection, (221). After all, property cannot be capable of rebellion, it is merely

My Service Project At Dawn Mckee From The Centre County...
I completed my service project working alongside Dawn McKee from the Centre County Women s
Resource Center. She, along with the director of the Children s Advocacy Center, director of the Youth
Service Bureau, a representative from Children and Youth Services, and a representative from YMCA
of Centre County came together to organize an event for sexual assault and child abuse. They
coordinated an event on the courthouse steps in Bellefonte where they recognized members in the
community who were dedicated to preventing and spreading awareness of sexual assault and child
abuse.

Although I was a little behind on my service project due to the miscommunication with Stormbreak, I
used my problem solving skills to quickly figure out an applicable alternative. Another aspect of my
restorative strength is taking the burden off others and putting it onto your own shoulders. I met Jamie,
from the State College YMCA, through Dawn. I reached out to Jamie and asked if she needed any
help with her part in the event; she needed help setting up tables at various YMCA locations
throughout Centre County. Although it was short notice and required a few hours of driving, I offered
to help Jamie set up the tables. Because of my helpful nature, I took the task off of Jamie s hands and
completed it even though it required some traveling to various locations. Belief, another one of my
strengths, also played a role in my service project. It mentioned that someone who is talented in the
belief theme usually spends times on things that relate to ideals and core values. It also explained that
individuals who have the belief strength take interest and want to help those who are struggling. I
wanted to work with Stormbreak because I admired the work they did in helping teenage girls find
shelter in a time of need. Also, I had mentioned earlier that I took special interest in the work Dawn
McKee did at the Centre County Women s resource center, because of a domestic violence speaker
that came to Penn State. Once she

The Purpose Of The Due Process
As we learn about the due process and what it has done for the world today, we learn what it took to
achieve the goal of the due process. The Due Process is a fundamental constitutional guarantee that all
legal proceedings will be fair and that one will be given notice of the proceedings and an opportunity
to be heard before the government acts to take away one s life, liberty, or property. Also, a
constitutional guarantee that a law shall not be unreasonable arbitrary or capricious. The due process
began and developed in English of 1215 and then in American Law as a procedural concept. It was
originated in 1354 translation from Latin for the first time in history, as the government was brought
under law , since they didn t have basic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Probable Cause relates to the due process as it has to do with the 4th Amendment from the Bill of
Rights. There were many incidents that happened that illustrated Probable Cause. Back in 2000, in
Florida v. J. L. as a teenager was carrying a gun and allegedly, three Miami Police were told. The
police acted illegally stated by the Supreme Court, as they did not have the correct search warrant. In
this case, since they were tipped off, they had no real evidence on how they knew a teenager had
possession of a gun. Also, there has been such acts including the Probable Cause such as Minnesota v.
Carter, 1999 and Lidster v. Illinois, 2004. The Substantive Due Process is when the government must
create fair polices and laws. The Substantive Process had a case with Pierce v. Society of Sisters,
1925. In 1922, Oregon s voters had adopted a school attendance law that requires all students between
the ages of 8 to 16 to attend public schools. A Roman Catholic school challenged the law, but the
Supreme Court stated that it violated the 14th Amendment s Due Process Clause. The Procedural Due
Process is when the government must employ fair procedures and methods. As we talk about the
Procedural Due Process, there was a case in 1952 between Rochin v. California. In California, Rochin
was a suspected narcotics dealer. He was jumped by deputies at his home as they found two capsules
of morphine in his room. They had to take him to the hospital to pump them out as he swallowed them
so they wouldn t know what those pills were. This shows how the deputies went about it the wrong
way. There are methods to the madness as they didn t need to invade his home like

The New Zealand Flag Debate Essay
The New Zealand Flag debate
(New Zealand Government, 2015, para. 1). Prime Minister John Key, the main advocate for change,
officially launched such discussion last year in a public address he gave at Victoria s University in
Wellington. One of the main points presented in Key s (2014) speech were his views on how he
believes Moreover Key (2014) also argued (para. 88). So far the Prime Ministers proposal failed to
inspire the public. On the contrary, it has produced a substantial amount of controversy. The main
arguments seem to revolt around the issues of cost, process, national symbol, history and change. This
paper will look more closely into each of these aforementioned public differences and close with my
own view concerning this debate.
To date the majority of the Countries that were once part of the British Empire, have discarded the
Union flag symbol from their flag designs (Silver Fern Flag, 2015, para. 1). For example, in 1965
Canada dropped the Union Jack in favour of the more distinctive maple leaf. According to Champion
(2010) Canada s public opinion was similar to that of current NZ citizens before the vote took place.
He states that (p. 180). Nonetheless, further down the road public opinion changed and Canadians
welcomed a new flag. Another past British colony South Africa, changed its flag in 1994 proclaiming
the new rainbow nation (Bornman, 2006). In 2015 New Zealand and Fiji look to become the next two

The First Act Of Terror
For many years now, the United States has been fighting a war on terrorism. The first act of terror, that
was committed on the soil of the United States in my lifetime, was that of September eleventh. It took
nineteen hijackers, to bring America down to its knees by striking both world trade centers, the
pentagon, and flight ninety three which was responsible for the killing of almost three thousand
people. These attacks created a huge burden on our first responders and hospitals. The knowledge
gained from disaster response and recovery classes and or courses would have been one of the greatest
assets to fire and police departments, ambulance services, and hospital staff. These attacks, that
morning, were unexpected and required first ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Medical, trauma, and emergency knowledge was needed in assessing victims of the attacks, in
deciding who needed or did not need medical care and in which order was most beneficial to the time
and for the greatest use of supplies available. The days, weeks, months, and years required to recover
from these incidents not just in the hot zone, but medically and mentally have set forth implementation
of how we focus our efforts before, during, and after hazards strike. The affects of September
eleventh, have taught us as first responders and government officials valuable information on disaster
response and recovery efforts.
In the morning of September eleventh, two thousand and one American citizens and visitors, public
safety officials, hospital staff, and every other person in the world woke up from their beds expecting
a normal day as that of September tenth. People were driving to and from work, getting their kids off
to school, grabbing their coffee, and resuming their activities of daily living. At eight forty six in the
morning American Airlines flight eleven struck the North tower of the World trade center, which
would collapse at ten twenty eight. Three minutes past nine, flight one seventy five would crash into
the south tower, and fall one minute before ten am. Flight seventy seven strikes part of the pentagon,
which causes damage and death. Finally at three minutes past ten in the

Commercial Whaling Essay examples
Commercial whaling is a serious world issue that has always been difficult for those who are in
support and those who are against it. Each group defends their side with convincing arguments.
Morally, whaling is wrong, but do the reasons for whaling outweigh the reasons to cease the primitive
hunts? By studying the effects of whaling, realizing how culture has changed over time, and taking
note of the money that would be saved, it can clearly be seen that there is no longer a current need for
whaling to continue. Efforts have been made to try to stop whaling, but with no help from any
authoritative figure, nothing has been done to regulate the whaling. The famous sea shepherd, known
for its strikes against whaling, can even be seen on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the cities that would fall under such a category would be New Bedford, Massachusetts, known
as the whaling city, it was essential to have a place where sailors could sell the meat and make a profit
(Hoare).
In 1946 the newly formed International Whaling Commission enacted a global moratorium on
commercial whaling (Robbins). The IWC was formed in hopes of protecting whales and making sure
that whales were spared. Without enforcement of the rules and restrictions for any nations, the
problem has not gone away. Without whales the ecosystem begins to falter, the whale being one of the
vital producers, and consumers of the ocean. There are countries that refused to agree to the terms of
the moratorium, regardless of the damage such actions would cause. The moratorium permits whaling
for scientific research, and that is the mask current whaling countries hide behind (Zelko). They argue
that they are not violating any restrictions, because Article 8 of the 1946 moratorium states that
whaling for scientific research is not part of the agreement (McCurry). During the 1970 s people
began to care about the whales that were being killed faster than they could reproduce (Robbins). In
1986 whaling was officially banned, some nations ignored the ban, and still do. In 1993, meat DNA
tested at a fish market in Japan showed that whale meat was clearly being sold, but there were no
consequences. The ban made by the IWC is not

Binder viscosity was altered by changing temperature. The...
Binder viscosity was altered by changing temperature. The initial dispersion of the binder in the
powder depends upon viscosity and shear rate applied. (Schaefer, 1996) Binder viscosity also controls
the consolidation rate and hence subsequent growth via coalescence. (Ennis, et al., 1991). Results
from Rough et al (2005) showed that increased temperature (lower viscosity), the regimes are reached
faster because the binder is able to distribute more effectively in the mixture at a given shear rate
which is in accordance with the work reported by Schaefer et al (1996). As LAS paste quantity was
increased, mixing time required to form designated regimes decreased. Work done by Hibare (2012)
showed that the peak modal granule diameter stays ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At the crumble regime, bulk density and porosity of the granules display significant turning points.
Rough et al (2005) also stated that the crumble regime is a key stage in the agglomeration mechanism
as it is the point between macro and micro mixing. Hibare (2012) concluded that as binder to solid
ratio increases, granulation time to achieve a particular size distribution decreases. Hibare (2012) also
showed that granule strength decreases as binder to solid ratio increases due to more liquid content in
the granules in both reactive and non reactive binder systems.
2.2 High Viscous (Detergent) vs Low Viscous Granulation Mechanisms
According to the research work on a high viscous binder detergent granulation system of LAS (high
viscosity binder) and zeolite carried out by Rough et al (2005), they found that at a higher impeller
speed, size distribution had the same peak modal diameter, a narrower peak width and less vol% of
bigger granule diameter. Comparing findings from Rough et al (2005) detergent granulation with
pharmaceutical granulation of lactose and PEG melt (low viscosity binder) carried out by Schaefer et
al (1993), Schaefer et al (1993) reported a larger peak modal diameter and a narrower size distribution
at higher speed. Heng et al (2000) suggested that at higher impeller speed with increased shear forces,
rate of granule consolidation should increase as surface plasticity and

Physics Of Physics Regarding Light Rays
I have always been interested in the way light travels, not just in how, but also in all the other factors
that affect the light rays, including the speed, the velocity, the distance, as well as others. In my past
years of school, I had been able to explore areas of physics concerning light rays, as part of my
physics course. However, I had previously only learned the basic principles, such as the laws of
refraction and reflection. Because I chose to focus on Chemistry and Biology, I was not given the
opportunity to delve deeper into the subject, and had only obtained basic understanding of it. Although
I knew of the principles and what they represented, I did not become fully aware of the fact that the
principles were based off of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, we want the light to bounce off a mirror or to pass through a piece of glass on its way
from A to B. Fermat s principle states that of all the possible paths the light might take, that satisfy
those boundary conditions, light takes the path which requires the shortest time.
(A more accurate statement of Fermat s principle: Any hypothetical small change in the actual path of
a light ray would only result in a second order change in the optical path length. The first order change
in the optical path length would be zero.)
Consider the diagram on the right. We want light to leave point A, bounce off the mirror, and get to
point B. Let the perpendicular distance from the mirror of both A and B be d and the shortest distance
between the points be D. Assume that light takes the path shown. The length of this path is then:
Since the speed of light is the same everywhere along all possible paths, the shortest path requires the
shortest time. To find the shortest path, I differentiated L with respect to x and set the result equal to
zero. (I did this in order to yield an extremum/minimum in the function or the derivative of L(x).) And
thus obtained the value of the least amount of time.
After canceling equal terms on both sides I was left with:
or

Persuasive Speech on Industrial Hemp
Do any of you know the difference between industrial hemp and marijuana? Would you like to? The
purpose of this speech is to explain the differences in marijuana and industrial hemp, and to show the
need to reform the present hemp laws in the United States in order to make hemp available for
industrial purposes. The hemp plant shows its unique versatility by having many uses in industry and
hemp has many distinct benefits over its counterpart in industry today. The usage of hemp would
result in cleaner and more efficient industry. I will first discuss the differences between hemp and
marijuana to avoid confusion, and then state the many ways that industrial hemp can help our
economy such as; the use for fiber, the use in foods, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many populations have grown hemp for its seed. Most of them eat it as `gruel , a food similar to
oatmeal. Hemp seeds do not contain any marijuana, so they do not cause a high . Hemp seed protein
closely resembles protein as it is found in the human blood, and it is easy to digest. In fact, people who
have trouble digesting foods are given hemp seeds prescribed by their doctors. Hemp seed oil provides
the human body with essential fatty acids and is the only seed that contains oils with almost no
saturated fat. As a supplement to the diet, these oils can reduce the risk of heart disease. With hemp
seed, a vegan or vegetarian can survive and eat virtually no saturated fats. One handful of hemp seed
per day will supply adequate protein and essential oils for an adult.
Lastly, hemp may also be used to produce ethanol. The United States government has developed a
way to make automobile fuel additive from biomass, and hemp is an excellent source of high quality
biomass. One other way to use hemp as fuel is to use the oil from the hemp seed. However, even if we
could produce and press enough hemp seed to power many millions of cars, the oil is more useful for
other purposes as suggested earlier. Biomass fuels are clean and virtually free from metals and sulfur,
so they do not cause nearly as much air pollution as fossil fuels. More importantly, burning biomass
fuels does not increase the total amount of carbon

Deflation And The Theory Of Truth
Deflation Accounts of Causation
Introduction
Several different theories accounts exist attempting to explain whether truth exists. Some of the
common causation accounts include the deflation account, reifications, covering law model and
unificationism accounts. The Deflation theory of truth states that a predicament of the truth does not
attribute the property of the truth to a particular statement. Several theories are present under the
deflation accounts of causation. They include the redundancy theory of truth and the perfection theory
of the truth. These two theories are the major dominant theory around deflation accounts of causation.
Although both theories attempt to explain and substantiate truth in a statement, the redundancy theory
is stronger compared to the perfection theory of truth. The redundancy theory is claimed to be the first
theory that came close to explaining predicaments of truth in a statement. No other account has
achieved the same fate as the redundancy account.
Redundancy Theory of Truth Also known as the disquotational theory of truth, the redundancy theory
holds that a statement will always remain the truth even before if the predictive statement misses. The
most common predicament statement used by most people is the it is truth . For example, when an
individual says, Snow is white, it means that snow is white and even when the predictive statement is
added it does not change the nature of the sentence (Damnjanovic, 2005). Thus the

Delano s Genius In Benito Cereno, By Herman Melville
Adam Mandel 6 October 2014 L204 Delano s Genius The story of Benito Cereno is written by
Herman Melville, yet is narrated by the captain of the Bachelor s Delight, Amasa Delano. By using an
in story narrator, Melville seems to divorce himself from the action, and any opinions he may have
about the characters. The reader is forced to watch the events unfold through the eyes of Delano, and
this deceives the audience into thinking Delano is a senseless, aloof sailor. However, Melville actually
believes Delano to be a genius and uses his multiple narrator storytelling style to hide this from the
audience. Many might argue that Captain Delano was not a bright man. He did not jump on the
strange occurrences on the Bachelor s Delight, and Babo fooled him on more than one occasion.
However, Delano did notice the strange happenings: At this moment the young sailor s eye was again
fixed on the whisperers, and Captain Delano thought he observed a lurking significance in it, as if
silent signs of some Freemason sort had that instant been interchanged (Melville 54). ... Show more

How Does Darcy Present Elizabeth Bennet s Marriage
First, The most significant marriage of the novel depicts the ideal vision of the bride Elizabeth Bennet.
Her ideal vision of what a marriage should be was one where the bride and groom had true love for
each other, as well as a mutual respect, and a intellectual connection that far surpassed a physical one.
Elizabeth had no social status or assets. This was an obstacle that Darcy had to overcome throughout
the book. He was constantly influenced by his family and those around him of equal or similar social
status that he should marry someone with some sort of power. However Elizabeth had to overcome her
prejudice towards the upper class, and understand Darcy for who he really was herself. Instead of
listening to and believing others opinions and gossip. This marriage clearly fits the description of its
bride s ideal marriage.
Next, George and Lydia s marriage was used to save Lydia and the Bennet family reputation. When
Lydia and George run away out of wedlock this potentially ruins the other Bennet sisters chance at
marrying into the upper class. Mrs. Bennet then manipulates the marriage although George is in severe

Summary Of Tarmageddon By Andrew Nikiforuk
In Tarmageddon: Dirty oil is turning Canada into a corrupt petro state, Andrew Nikiforuk argues that
the Canadian oil industry has harmed Canada s environmental, political and economical images. First,
Canada starts to be regarded as having a defensive attitude towards environmental issues since the
Bitumen has been explored. Regardless of the Bitumen s high cost and emission, Canada still
welcomes billions of foreign investment in the Bitumen. Consequently, newly operated industries
begin to destroy the forest and generate toxic waste (even into water). While refining oil, lots of
energy and freshwater are squandered, outpouring a considerable amount of carbon emission. Hence,
Canadian oil industry has been pictured as a carbon making

Essay On Lord Of The Rings Hero s Journey
I am glad you are here with me, here at the end of all things, Sam. Frodo reaches out his hand over the

Communication Difficulties And Cultural Problems Essay
First, one of the major problems global businesses are facing currently is communication difficulties

Pros And Cons Of Tankless Water Heaters
A tankless water heater can be a wonderful addition to a home. Instead of continuously storing hot
water, tankless units heat the water when the faucet is turned on. These units are also referred to as on
demand, or instantaneous water heaters. However, this type of water heater is not for everyone. Take a
look at the pros and cons of an on demand water heater to decide if this kind of water heater is right
for you.
Pros and Cons of an On Demand Water Heater
Pros
On demand water heaters are more energy efficient than conventional water heaters. The Department
of Energy states that for homes that use no more than 41 gallons of hot water a day a tankless water
heater can be up to 34 percent more efficient than a traditional water heater. In ... Show more content

Replacing parts on an instantaneous unit is easy, which extends the life of the unit even more.
Cons
The upfront cost of the unit.
Tankless water heater installation is expensive.
Due to its high powered burners, special venting systems are necessary with on demand water heaters.
Units that operate on natural gas frequently need a larger diameter gas pipe, which increases the cost
of installation.
Smaller units cannot produce the amount of hot water needed in most households. These smaller units
can only serve one faucet at a time.
Larger tankless units have the ability to provide sufficient water for an entire family. However, these
units are much more expensive than the smaller units are.
If an on demand water heater turns off following a task and you turn the hot water back on a few
minutes later, you may experience a cold water sandwich. The hot water that remained in the piping
after the first task will flow out and then cold water flows past the water heater before the unit is
triggered to turn back on (Hot Cold

Rommel Desert Fox
Rommel aka Desert Fox The man best known as the Desert Fox was born 15 November 1891 to
parents Erwin Rommel Senior and Helen von Lutz who named their son Erwin Johannes Eugene
Rommel. Rommel s family was not a military one, his father like his father before him were teachers
while his mother was the daughter of a high ranking government official. (Kurowski 2010) It is not
known why a man with no military family connections would be led to join the army but I believe that
he was influenced by the growing Nationalism in Germany at the time. He became an officer cadet in
1910 with the124th Wurttemberg Infantry Regiment where he was commissioned a Leutnant in 1911.
After his commission he would go on to marry Lucia Mollin on 27 November 1916, they would later
have a son whom they named Manfred Rommel. It is rumored that he had a daughter born in 1913
named Gertrud Stemmler from a relationship with Walburga Stemmer which was before his marriage.
(History.com n.d.) Who could have guessed that 33 years later he would hold the rank of
Generalfeldmarschall and be one of the most famous battlefield leaders of the Second World War. One
can only wonder about the path that led a son of a teacher from the world of academia to the
battlefields of World War I. His first unit that he fought with in WWI was the 6th Wurttemberg

Chapter Summary Of Looking Good By Lynne Luciano
Looking Good is a book by Lynne Luciano, published in 2001. The book is about the male body
image in modern America during the last five decades. The professor essentially asks three questions
in the book: 1. What is the reason to American men falling into the same beauty traps that women
have been for such a long time before them? 2. Have men become more feminine with their increased
concern about their bodies? 3. Have the women s movement in society caused men the last decades
caused men to become similar to them?
The author tries to answer three questions in the book, which are subjective, so it is hard to really do,
but she tries to by going through the economic, social, and culture changes that occurred after World
War II. During the first part of the book, Luciano discusses certain areas men are concerned about ¬
body and fitness, hair, cosmetic surgeries, and sexuality. She writes about how the concern regarding
these male beauty aspects have increasingly become more and more important for men, that we spend
more money on hair transplant, cosmetic surgeries, fitness studios, fitness products and are more
concerned about our masculinity and appearance, which ironically, is typically seen as more feminine.
During the second part of the book, Luciano talk about the developments in the white collar business

Natural Law Of Shakespeare s King Lear

Natural Law in Shakespeare s King Lear King Lear is one of the most famous tragedies, which was
written by Shakespeare between 1603 and 1606. During that period, the social unrest swept across the
whole England, and the rise of capitalism led to moral turpitude. With the high speed economic
development, many old ethics and moralities had been gradually forgotten and destroyed. Therefore,
King Lear can be seen as a true portrayal of the social phenomena of this time.
The play explores the Natural law, which can be easily found in terms of power relationships between
human beings parents over children, husbands over wives, and king over subjects. The notion of
natural social order in King Lear is not only simply as one of the most essential themes, but also the
foundation of the entire play. First and foremost, at the core of this play lies the filiation between
parents and children. Shakespeare shows the significance of this relationship through Edmund,
Goneril and Regan, who do not respect their parents. At the beginning of the play, Edmund has no any
entitlement under the unjust British Hierarchy and the social customs at that time because he is a
bastard. When he said, Shall top the legitimate; I grow; I prosper/Now, gods, stand up for bastards! (1.

scholars believe that gunpowder was created in ancient China around 900 AD

monks who frequently developed elixirs were making a brand new elixir, and ended up making the
destructive tool gunpowder.. One day when they were trying to find another elixir they accidentally
created an elixir with entirely new properties they have never seen before.

Advantages Of Commuting
Many people must or choose to commute to school on a weekly basis for a variety of reasons. Before
the school year begins, students must make the choice of whether or not they want to live on campus
or commute. Commuting does not necessarily have to do with going to school, but commuting is
commonly seen for going to school or work. I had to decide whether or not to commute before my
Fall semester started, and picking was a tough choice because I live quite far from the college campus;
however, I chose to commute for various reasons and it was the right decision. People who commute
far distances, usually complain about the annoyances that come with commuting, and some of these
people will choose to move closer even though they were originally at driving distance; however, most
people who commute chose to continue commuting for as long as possible anyways. Dorming and
living on campus is much more convenient, but commuting to college, if possible, is much better since
commuting is cheaper, anyone can do it, family reasons, and of course much more comfortable.
Commuting may be tough in the morning since a commuter must wake up, and begin traveling early,
but at the end of the year a commuter would save much more money. Most people choose to commute
because of money and Free housing, food and laundry. Living at home means you save a lot of money,
which can help you down the line when you want to move out on your own (Callahan, Confessions of

The Conversion Of Constantine s Conversion Essay
The Conversion of Constantine Constantine was the first Roman Emperor to convert to Christianity.
He started his reign in 306 AD. During this time the Roman Empire was still composed mainly of
pagans. Although the population of Christians was on the rise, in the beginning of the fourth century
Christians made up only 10 percent of the population in the Roman Empire. There were
approximately five million Christian in the Roman Empire meaning that they were still the minority
(Waldron). His conversion was an important turning point not only for Christians but also for the
Roman Empire as a whole. Although most Romans still believed in Greco Roman religions,
Constantine decided to become a Christian because he knew that it would be beneficial for his role as
emperor. His conversion was prompted by his desire to end the tetrarchy structure of he Roman
Empire and to become the sole ruler of the Roman Empire. The story of Constantine s conversion was
told through Eucbuius of Caersera. His recount of the story is skewed by his bias. In order to show a
more holistic view of the story I will be comparing his account to the account of Andreas. Constantine
had other motives for converting to Christianity such as Alföldi. Constantine s decision to become a
Christian was influenced by numerous external factors. Constantine emulated the monotheistic nature
of Christianity and used it as the foundation of his reign and used Christianity to advance his political
agenda. When

The Unknown Citizen Poem Analysis
Message Exchange Three Messages Citizen, Old, and Anyone Many may say that within every piece
of literature, object, and spoken word there is a deeper meaning, or perhaps a hidden message. These
hidden meanings are often hard to find and require more thought. In the three poems The Unknown
Citizen , Old Age Sticks , and Anyone lived in a Pretty How Town there is a hidden meaning behind
each word. Some could say that they all tie together in some way. The three messages from these three
poems will be examined in the paragraphs below. Here is the way these three messages, can be
deciphered within each text. In the first poem The Unknown Citizen we can see that Mr. W.H. Auden
is diving into a more elaborate view of how he believes that the government just views this man as a
number. For example when Mr. Auden says Was he free? Was he happy? The question is absurd: Had
anything been wrong, we should certainly have heard . (Pg.775) In this line this shows that the
government only cared about statistics. They did not care much about whether or not if he was
satisfied in his life or if he wanted anything more to do. All they seemed to care about was the reports
they had about his life. When he says Yet, he wasn t a scab or odd in his views (Pg.775) Mr. Auden is
explaining the this unknown citizen was not particularly different in his views and that he did not
particularly stand up for things he believe in. This is makes him just another person, and nothing
special about him. With this text it is easily shown that sometimes all you are in society is a number.
This unknown citizen did not disturb the universe as many people strive to do in their lives.
In the poem Old Age Sticks , we can see the deeper meaning behind it at first it may be the hardest
thing in the world to read, but that is because Mr. E.E. Cummings uses words to create confusion.
However, the meaning behind this is that the young continue to grow old and the old try to tell the
youth what to do and what not to do which is super controversial for example, Old age sticks up Keep
off Signs and youth yanks them down

Gas is some what air in my opinion because you cant see it but you can hear it, you can feel air from

from or air from trees that they covert and we use to breathe, we also use gases from natural resources
for energy. Animals rely on air because plants need it to make food and animals eat the grass or their
host that does. We use machines that use gases like propane that burns like gas to make machines

Difference Between Sleep Drive And The Circadian Alerting...
Sleep is a complex phenomenon, best understood as the product of two intertwined biological systems
: the sleep drive and the circadian alerting system. The sleep drive is our biological need for sleep. The
sleep drive can be thought of as a tank that empties and fills throughout the course of a day, like the
gas tank in a car. When you sleep at night, the tank is filled with sleep. You awaken in the morning,
refueled and ready to drive through the day. The longer you drive through the day, the more the tank
depletes. By bedtime, the tank is on E ; it is empty and you must sleep to replenish it. The sleep drive
forces sleep, so that your tank can be refilled, and your biological sleep need is met. The circadian

What is the advantage of predicting the outcome of TBI? Doctors can advise patients early, and they
can recommend whether or not they need to take time off work. In addition, they can decide if the
person will need followup treatment with a neurologist.
This is extraordinarily important considering that TBI is a lead cause of disability and death within the
United States. With blood tests accurately identifying if a patient has suffered from TBI, they can
reduce the amount of unnecessary CT scans by about 30 percent. We have seen a need for an accurate
and faster screening tool. Coupled with a CT scan, it becomes much easier to detect when things have
gone amiss. While 16 European countries regularly use blood tests as an accepted standard for testing
for TBI, the United States still only uses the CT scan.
What do doctors test for? In previous studies, researchers discovered that the protein known as S 100B
serum increased rapidly after brain injuries. Medical practitioners plan to test the blood within four
hours of an injury to predict if a patient will suffer from hemorrhaging or skull fractures. While it does
take 20 minutes to learn of the results, it could spare numerous patients the need for unnecessary

civilizations. The Assyrians also had more weapons than their enemies, due to the fact that iron was
very abundant in the world. The Assyrian military was also at an advantage because it was more
effective and stronger than bronze, which was the main material other civilizations used for their
weapons. Clearly, The Assyrian military had an upper hand against their opponents, which led them to
domination. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Iron was a lot stronger, lighter more durable compared to the bronze weapons that other civilizations
had at the time. According to experts, Their weapons were among the deadliest in the world, (May).
Iron was also superior to bronze in that it was more abundant, so not only were the Assyrians equipped
with stronger, more durable weapons but also equipped with more weapons than other civilizations.
Iron weapons proved to have a distinct advantage over bronze which led the Assyrians to have a

Biometrics And Human Physical Characteristics
The Cambridge dictionary defines biometrics as detailed information about someone s body, such as
patterns of color in their eyes, that can be used to prove who that person is. However, TechTerms
defines biometrics as technology used to detect and recognize human physical characteristics. There
are two categories of biometric identifiers which are Physiological characteristics that consists of
fingerprint, face recognition, DNA, palm print, hand geometry, iris recognition, odor/scent, etc. and
Behavioral characteristics which consists for voice recognition, gait recognition, etc. In recent years, it
has become more and more popular for biometrics to be used as an authentication tool (e.g. mobile
phone passwords using fingerprint scan, room entries using fingerprint or iris scan, etc.) because it is
believed to be more reliable and genuine than the traditional recognition systems (e.g. phone
passcodes, keys, tokens/tubs, etc.). This is mostly because every person has their unique biometric
features that cannot be mimicked e.g. the ridges of a fingerprint is so unique that even dust or water on
a person s finger could change the way the ridges are read, the structure of the iris has its different
structure is every individual person, Palm print is also varies from person to person with size or tiny
features, facial recognition software s are also a perfect example because facial structures differ from
person to person hence why it is almost impossible for two people to look

Janie s Motif
Journal 3
In the novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God, by Zora Neale Hurston, Janie creates an idea of real love
during her sexual awakening. Her idea of real love centers around two people working together,
loving each other, and being happy in marriage. This idea drives Janie to search for this love. In the
process of her search, Janie encounters relationships that are abusive and oppressive. These
relationships allow her to understand what real love is in contrast from mislove. Moreover, Janie
becomes more independent in the midst of a male dominated society and learns to embrace her
sexuality despite society s idea of how women should behave. Hurston constructs Janie s character arc
through the use of motifs. Hurston uses the motif of bees, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During her relationship with Logan Killicks, Janie never mentions bees or trees during her interactions
with Logan. In fact, the only time she refers to bees or trees is when she complains about the union.
The absence of the motif during their relationship emphasizes that Janie did not benefit from her
marriage with Logan. This is the first occurence of mislove in Janie s life. The second occurence of
mislove appears during Janie s relationship with Joe. Joe did not represent the sun up and pollen and
blooming trees, (29) foreshadowing that Janie would not find her true love in this relationship. Indeed,
she enters an oppressive marriage with Joe. Joe order[es] Janie to tie up her hair (55) and cover it with
a rag because her hair attracts men and he want[s] her submission (71). He suppresses her sexuality
and strips her of her independence. Consequently, [s]he had no more blossomy openings dusting
pollen over her man. (72). Janie finally realizes that her marriage with Joe is not real love, rather, it is
mislove. Real love means that both partners benefit, but [s]he got nothing from Jody except what
money could buy (77). This experience with Jody causes Janie to understand the difference between
real love and mislove. She also understands that her sexuality and autonomy is significant to her.
When Jody dies, Janie embraces her independence and sexuality, letting her hair in one thick braid [to
swing] well below her waist. (89). Her experiences with mislove does not destroy her. Instead, it
allows her to become more independent and

Dance Me Outside Essay example
The video, Dance Me Outside , did a great job of portraying the gross disregard for a Native American
s life in the case of Little Margaret as well as the biases within the judicial system and restorative
justice. The director also emphasizes how Native American s take care of their own in many instances
throughout the film. In the video, a Native American girl, Little Margaret is murdered after a night out
at the bar. Little Margaret s body was carelessly tossed next to the river where two of the main
characters, Silas and Frank, find her. The two are stunned with how recklessly someone just left her.
Clearly, this murder was not treated with equal justice because the murderer, Clarence, a white man
only spent a small amount ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Through these situations, they speak very little about the consequences and take action to do what
needs to be done. The plans were set in place and the parts were played by each Native American,
from getting Illiana pregnant by Gooch, her ex boyfriend, to taking her white husband out and
distracting him to make the plan work as well as the group carrying out a plan to kill Clarence for the
murder of Little Margaret. Intuitively, the night that the group of Native American men were going to
revenge Little Margaret s death and kill Clarence, the Native American women were so in tune with
what was happening even though there were not a part of the planning that one of the Native
American women, Sadie, Silas girlfriend, takes it upon herself to kill Clarence before Silas does
because she knows that if Silas kills Clarence, he will not be able to fulfill his dreams of becoming a
mechanic and would spend his life in jail. She knew that if she killed him, she would not be a suspect
and Silas would have an alibi. Upon Clarence s murder, the entire group of Native American friends
was taken to the police station for questioning. During their time at the police station, the white
officers degraded them and made them feel less than human. They were made to strip down to their
boxer shorts and were treated poorly because they were Native American. Fortunately for

Classical Conditioning And Observational Learning
Classical conditioning, operant conditioning, as well as observational learning don t only hold their
influence in the field of psychology but can also affect the experiences in one s life. These three
concepts/theories are able to leave an impact through the duration of an individual s development and
life. Classical conditioning, operant conditioning and observational learning have been able to play a
pivotal role through my initial fear then eventual confidence with public speaking.
Classical conditioning is the learning process that occurs when two stimuli are repeatedly paired . A
stimulus is what causes a reaction to be initiated. This can be applicable to many situations, an
example being in training a dog. An individual could place a bowl of food ... Show more content on

Once the food is taken away and replaced with a ringing of a bell (neutral stimulus), the dog will no
longer salivate. The neutral stimulus is a stimulus that at first doesn t produce a significant response
but will eventually become a conditioned stimulus, especially in classical conditioning. Then when the
bell rings and is presented along with a bowl of food the dog will respond by salivating. Now, the
individual will only have to ring the bell (without the bowl of food present) in order for the dog to
respond by salivating, this in turn being the conditioned response. This type of learning process was
used in similar way when I had to present in front of the class. I knew I would have to eventually
present my final project in front of my class. Knowing this caused me to be quite nervous, causing my
heart to pound and my forehead to sweat. The knowledge of having to present

Machismo In Gabriel Garcia Marquez s Chronicles Of A Death...
English Essay
Gabriel Garcia Marquez s Chronicles of a Death Foretold shows how Machismo drives all male
ambition. Machismo, in Latin American countries was derived from the word macho meaning an
intense masculine pride. Machismo was first used in 1948, and was taken as a code of honour for men,
rules that would make you considered macho. Respect and reputation are highly regarded as important
traits in Machismo, and are the driving force of reason in the novel. (Add another sentence about the
broadness of Machismo). The plot of the novel is based on the murder of Santiago Nasar, and is rooted
in Machismo. The two antagonists of the book Pablo and Pedro Vicario, murder Nasar after finding
out he allegedly had sex with their sister, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The narrator s sister who isn t even involved in the murder and isn t present at all during the events,
even understands why they killed him, even though feels mournful for him. I felt that I was the one
who was going to die, my sister said. But no matter how much they tossed the story back and forth, no
one could explain to me how poor Santiago Nasar ended up being involved in such a mix up. The only
thing they knew for sure was that Angela Vicario s brothers were waiting for him to kill him. (Chapter
1 Page 38).
Even the groups of people who were most likely to be against the killing either supported it or did not
object to it. The priest the brothers visit after the killing has concluded, says they are innocent before
God, which both the priest and the brothers agree upon We killed him openly, Pedro Vicario said, but
we re innocent. Perhaps before God, said Father Amador. Before God and before men, Pablo Vicario
said. It was a matter of honor. (Chapter 3 Page 73). Even though murder is a sin designated by the 10
commandments. The law is on their side as well, both the brothers only receiving 3 years in prison for
1st degree murder. This utter respect for Machismo triumphs over both religious and lawful justice,
both commoningly of highest values in society for a vast majority of people. As well as this, the Arab
community which Nasar is

  • 2. Essay on A Society of Oppression in A Handmaid s Tale A Society of Oppression in A Handmaid s Tale As the saying goes, history repeats itself. If one of the goals of Margaret Atwood was to prove this particular point, she certainly succeeded in her novel A Handmaid s Tale. In her Note to the Reader, she writes, The thing to remember is that there is nothing new about the society depicted in The Handmaiden s Tale except the time and place. All of the things I have written about ...have been done before, more than once... (316). Atwood seems to choose only the most threatening, frightening, and atrocious events in history to parallel her book by specifically the enslavement of African Americans in the United States. She traces the development of this institution, but from the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... That is what you have to do before you kill, I thought. Property cannot read or write for example, or leave their respective grounds a plantation in the case of slaves, or the Center in the case of the Handmaids without an escort or master. Segregation is also an issue, as blacks could not sit with the whites at church or eat at the same dinner table, the Handmaids were not permitted to sit with the Wives at assemblies or eat at their banquet tables. In addition, a Handmaid does not have any claim on her own child, who belongs to her masters, the Commander, and his wife, just as a slave mother would have no right to keep her child from her master if he wished to sell it. Finally, there is the renting of women to men, not unlike the renting of slaves to farmers, as property of the owner (of course the rent money does not go to the worker; what could an it need with such a human invention?). As the Commander demonstrates to Offred when she enters the bordello, He slips around my wrist a tag...like tags for airport luggage. If anyone asks you, say your an evening rental, he says... (233). An earlier Commander set this trend by announcing, Let women learn silence, with all subjection, (221). After all, property cannot be capable of rebellion, it is merely ... She, along with the director of the Children s Advocacy Center, director of the Youth Service Bureau, a representative from Children and Youth Services, and a representative from YMCA of Centre County came together to organize an event for sexual assault and child abuse. They coordinated an event on the courthouse steps in Bellefonte where they recognized members in the community who were dedicated to preventing and spreading awareness of sexual assault and child abuse. 1. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although I was a little behind on my service project due to the miscommunication with Stormbreak, I used my problem solving skills to quickly figure out an applicable alternative. Another aspect of my restorative strength is taking the burden off others and putting it onto your own shoulders. I met Jamie, from the State College YMCA, through Dawn. I reached out to Jamie and asked if she needed any help with her part in the event; she needed help setting up tables at various YMCA locations throughout Centre County. Although it was short notice and required a few hours of driving, I offered to help Jamie set up the tables. Because of my helpful nature, I took the task off of Jamie s hands and completed it even though it required some traveling to various locations. Belief, another one of my strengths, also played a role in my service project. It mentioned that someone who is talented in the belief theme usually spends times on things that relate to ideals and core values. It also explained that individuals who have the belief strength take interest and want to help those who are struggling. I wanted to work with Stormbreak because I admired the work they did in helping teenage girls find shelter in a time of need. Also, I had mentioned earlier that I took special interest in the work Dawn McKee did at the Centre County Women s resource center, because of a domestic violence speaker that came to Penn State. • 7. The Purpose Of The Due Process As we learn about the due process and what it has done for the world today, we learn what it took to achieve the goal of the due process. The Due Process is a fundamental constitutional guarantee that all legal proceedings will be fair and that one will be given notice of the proceedings and an opportunity to be heard before the government acts to take away one s life, liberty, or property. Also, a constitutional guarantee that a law shall not be unreasonable arbitrary or capricious. The due process began and developed in English of 1215 and then in American Law as a procedural concept. It was originated in 1354 translation from Latin for the first time in history, as the government was brought under law , since they didn t have basic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Probable Cause relates to the due process as it has to do with the 4th Amendment from the Bill of Rights. There were many incidents that happened that illustrated Probable Cause. Back in 2000, in Florida v. J. L. as a teenager was carrying a gun and allegedly, three Miami Police were told. The police acted illegally stated by the Supreme Court, as they did not have the correct search warrant. In this case, since they were tipped off, they had no real evidence on how they knew a teenager had possession of a gun. Also, there has been such acts including the Probable Cause such as Minnesota v. Carter, 1999 and Lidster v. Illinois, 2004. The Substantive Due Process is when the government must create fair polices and laws. The Substantive Process had a case with Pierce v. Society of Sisters, 1925. In 1922, Oregon s voters had adopted a school attendance law that requires all students between the ages of 8 to 16 to attend public schools. A Roman Catholic school challenged the law, but the Supreme Court stated that it violated the 14th Amendment s Due Process Clause. The Procedural Due Process is when the government must employ fair procedures and methods. As we talk about the Procedural Due Process, there was a case in 1952 between Rochin v. California. In California, Rochin was a suspected narcotics dealer. He was jumped by deputies at his home as they found two capsules of morphine in his room. They had to take him to the hospital to pump them out as he swallowed them so they wouldn t know what those pills were. This shows how the deputies went about it the wrong way. • 8. The New Zealand Flag Debate Essay The New Zealand Flag debate (New Zealand Government, 2015, para. 1). Prime Minister John Key, the main advocate for change, officially launched such discussion last year in a public address he gave at Victoria s University in Wellington. One of the main points presented in Key s (2014) speech were his views on how he believes Moreover Key (2014) also argued (para. 88). So far the Prime Ministers proposal failed to inspire the public. On the contrary, it has produced a substantial amount of controversy. The main arguments seem to revolt around the issues of cost, process, national symbol, history and change. This paper will look more closely into each of these aforementioned public differences and close with my own view concerning this debate. To date the majority of the Countries that were once part of the British Empire, have discarded the Union flag symbol from their flag designs (Silver Fern Flag, 2015, para. 1). For example, in 1965 Canada dropped the Union Jack in favour of the more distinctive maple leaf. According to Champion (2010) Canada s public opinion was similar to that of current NZ citizens before the vote took place. He states that (p. 180). Nonetheless, further down the road public opinion changed and Canadians welcomed a new flag. Another past British colony South Africa, changed its flag in 1994 proclaiming the new rainbow nation (Bornman, 2006). Each group defends their side with convincing arguments. Morally, whaling is wrong, but do the reasons for whaling outweigh the reasons to cease the primitive hunts? By studying the effects of whaling, realizing how culture has changed over time, and taking note of the money that would be saved, it can clearly be seen that there is no longer a current need for whaling to continue. One of the cities that would fall under such a category would be New Bedford, Massachusetts, known as the whaling city, it was essential to have a place where sailors could sell the meat and make a profit (Hoare). In 1946 the newly formed International Whaling Commission enacted a global moratorium on commercial whaling (Robbins). The IWC was formed in hopes of protecting whales and making sure that whales were spared. Without enforcement of the rules and restrictions for any nations, the problem has not gone away. Without whales the ecosystem begins to falter, the whale being one of the vital producers, and consumers of the ocean. There are countries that refused to agree to the terms of the moratorium, regardless of the damage such actions would cause. The moratorium permits whaling for scientific research, and that is the mask current whaling countries hide behind (Zelko). They argue that they are not violating any restrictions, because Article 8 of the 1946 moratorium states that whaling for scientific research is not part of the agreement (McCurry). During the 1970 s people began to care about the whales that were being killed faster than they could reproduce (Robbins). In 1986 whaling was officially banned, some nations ignored the ban, and still do. In 1993, meat DNA tested at a fish market in Japan showed that whale meat was clearly being sold, but there were no consequences. The ban made by the IWC is not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Binder viscosity was altered by changing temperature. The... Binder viscosity was altered by changing temperature. The initial dispersion of the binder in the powder depends upon viscosity and shear rate applied. (Schaefer, 1996) Binder viscosity also controls the consolidation rate and hence subsequent growth via coalescence. (Ennis, et al., 1991). Results from Rough et al (2005) showed that increased temperature (lower viscosity), the regimes are reached faster because the binder is able to distribute more effectively in the mixture at a given shear rate which is in accordance with the work reported by Schaefer et al (1996). As LAS paste quantity was increased, mixing time required to form designated regimes decreased. Work done by Hibare (2012) showed that the peak modal granule diameter stays ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At the crumble regime, bulk density and porosity of the granules display significant turning points. Rough et al (2005) also stated that the crumble regime is a key stage in the agglomeration mechanism as it is the point between macro and micro mixing. Hibare (2012) concluded that as binder to solid ratio increases, granulation time to achieve a particular size distribution decreases. Hibare (2012) also showed that granule strength decreases as binder to solid ratio increases due to more liquid content in the granules in both reactive and non reactive binder systems. 2.2 High Viscous (Detergent) vs Low Viscous Granulation Mechanisms According to the research work on a high viscous binder detergent granulation system of LAS (high viscosity binder) and zeolite carried out by Rough et al (2005), they found that at a higher impeller speed, size distribution had the same peak modal diameter, a narrower peak width and less vol% of bigger granule diameter. Comparing findings from Rough et al (2005) detergent granulation with pharmaceutical granulation of lactose and PEG melt (low viscosity binder) carried out by Schaefer et al (1993), Schaefer et al (1993) reported a larger peak modal diameter and a narrower size distribution at higher speed. Heng et al (2000) suggested that at higher impeller speed with increased shear forces, rate of granule consolidation should increase as surface plasticity and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Physics Of Physics Regarding Light Rays I have always been interested in the way light travels, not just in how, but also in all the other factors that affect the light rays, including the speed, the velocity, the distance, as well as others. In my past years of school, I had been able to explore areas of physics concerning light rays, as part of my physics course. However, I had previously only learned the basic principles, such as the laws of refraction and reflection. For example, we want the light to bounce off a mirror or to pass through a piece of glass on its way from A to B. Fermat s principle states that of all the possible paths the light might take, that satisfy those boundary conditions, light takes the path which requires the shortest time. (A more accurate statement of Fermat s principle: Any hypothetical small change in the actual path of a light ray would only result in a second order change in the optical path length. The first order change in the optical path length would be zero.) Consider the diagram on the right. We want light to leave point A, bounce off the mirror, and get to point B. Let the perpendicular distance from the mirror of both A and B be d and the shortest distance between the points be D. Assume that light takes the path shown. The length of this path is then: Since the speed of light is the same everywhere along all possible paths, the shortest path requires the shortest time. To find the shortest path, I differentiated L with respect to x and set the result equal to zero. (I did this in order to yield an extremum/minimum in the function or the derivative of L(x).) And thus obtained the value of the least amount of time. After canceling equal terms on both sides I was left with: or The path that takes the shortest time is the one for which x=D/2, or equivalently, the one ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The hemp plant shows its unique versatility by having many uses in industry and hemp has many distinct benefits over its counterpart in industry today. Hemp seeds do not contain any marijuana, so they do not cause a high . Hemp seed protein closely resembles protein as it is found in the human blood, and it is easy to digest. In fact, people who have trouble digesting foods are given hemp seeds prescribed by their doctors. Hemp seed oil provides the human body with essential fatty acids and is the only seed that contains oils with almost no saturated fat. As a supplement to the diet, these oils can reduce the risk of heart disease. With hemp seed, a vegan or vegetarian can survive and eat virtually no saturated fats. One handful of hemp seed per day will supply adequate protein and essential oils for an adult. Lastly, hemp may also be used to produce ethanol. The United States government has developed a way to make automobile fuel additive from biomass, and hemp is an excellent source of high quality biomass. One other way to use hemp as fuel is to use the oil from the hemp seed. However, even if we could produce and press enough hemp seed to power many millions of cars, the oil is more useful for other purposes as suggested earlier. • 15. Deflation And The Theory Of Truth Deflation Accounts of Causation Introduction Several different theories accounts exist attempting to explain whether truth exists. Some of the common causation accounts include the deflation account, reifications, covering law model and unificationism accounts. The Deflation theory of truth states that a predicament of the truth does not attribute the property of the truth to a particular statement. Several theories are present under the deflation accounts of causation. They include the redundancy theory of truth and the perfection theory of the truth. These two theories are the major dominant theory around deflation accounts of causation. Although both theories attempt to explain and substantiate truth in a statement, the redundancy theory is stronger compared to the perfection theory of truth. The redundancy theory is claimed to be the first theory that came close to explaining predicaments of truth in a statement. No other account has achieved the same fate as the redundancy account. Redundancy Theory of Truth Also known as the disquotational theory of truth, the redundancy theory holds that a statement will always remain the truth even before if the predictive statement misses. The most common predicament statement used by most people is the it is truth . For example, when an individual says, Snow is white, it means that snow is white and even when the predictive statement is added it does not change the nature of the sentence (Damnjanovic, 2005). Delano s Genius In Benito Cereno, By Herman Melville Adam Mandel 6 October 2014 L204 Delano s Genius The story of Benito Cereno is written by Herman Melville, yet is narrated by the captain of the Bachelor s Delight, Amasa Delano. By using an in story narrator, Melville seems to divorce himself from the action, and any opinions he may have about the characters. The reader is forced to watch the events unfold through the eyes of Delano, and this deceives the audience into thinking Delano is a senseless, aloof sailor. However, Melville actually believes Delano to be a genius and uses his multiple narrator storytelling style to hide this from the audience. Many might argue that Captain Delano was not a bright man. He did not jump on the strange occurrences on the Bachelor s Delight, and Babo fooled him on more than one occasion. However, Delano did notice the strange happenings: At this moment the young sailor s eye was again fixed on the whisperers, and Captain Delano thought he observed a lurking significance in it, as if silent signs of some Freemason sort had that instant been interchanged (Melville 54). ... • 18. How Does Darcy Present Elizabeth Bennet s Marriage First, The most significant marriage of the novel depicts the ideal vision of the bride Elizabeth Bennet. Her ideal vision of what a marriage should be was one where the bride and groom had true love for each other, as well as a mutual respect, and a intellectual connection that far surpassed a physical one. Elizabeth had no social status or assets. This was an obstacle that Darcy had to overcome throughout the book. He was constantly influenced by his family and those around him of equal or similar social status that he should marry someone with some sort of power. However Elizabeth had to overcome her prejudice towards the upper class, and understand Darcy for who he really was herself. Instead of listening to and believing others opinions and gossip. This marriage clearly fits the description of its bride s ideal marriage. Next, George and Lydia s marriage was used to save Lydia and the Bennet family reputation. Natural Law Of Shakespeare s King Lear Amber Li Dr. Andreacchi ENG4U1 January 6, 2015 Natural Law in Shakespeare s King Lear King Lear is one of the most famous tragedies, which was written by Shakespeare between 1603 and 1606. During that period, the social unrest swept across the whole England, and the rise of capitalism led to moral turpitude. With the high speed economic development, many old ethics and moralities had been gradually forgotten and destroyed. Therefore, King Lear can be seen as a true portrayal of the social phenomena of this time. The play explores the Natural law, which can be easily found in terms of power relationships between human beings parents over children, husbands over wives, and king over subjects. The notion of natural social order in King Lear is not only simply as one of the most essential themes, but also the foundation of the entire play. First and foremost, at the core of this play lies the filiation between parents and children. Shakespeare shows the significance of this relationship through Edmund, Goneril and Regan, who do not respect their parents. At the beginning of the play, Edmund has no any entitlement under the unjust British Hierarchy and the social customs at that time because he is a bastard. When he said, Shall top the legitimate; I grow; I prosper/Now, gods, stand up for bastards! (1. 2. 21 22) These words define his the respect and rank of low birth. I had to decide whether or not to commute before my Fall semester started, and picking was a tough choice because I live quite far from the college campus; however, I chose to commute for various reasons and it was the right decision. People who commute far distances, usually complain about the annoyances that come with commuting, and some of these people will choose to move closer even though they were originally at driving distance; however, most people who commute chose to continue commuting for as long as possible anyways. Although the population of Christians was on the rise, in the beginning of the fourth century Christians made up only 10 percent of the population in the Roman Empire. There were approximately five million Christian in the Roman Empire meaning that they were still the minority (Waldron). His conversion was an important turning point not only for Christians but also for the Roman Empire as a whole. Although most Romans still believed in Greco Roman religions, Constantine decided to become a Christian because he knew that it would be beneficial for his role as emperor. His conversion was prompted by his desire to end the tetrarchy structure of he Roman Empire and to become the sole ruler of the Roman Empire. The story of Constantine s conversion was told through Eucbuius of Caersera. His recount of the story is skewed by his bias. • 31. The Unknown Citizen Poem Analysis Message Exchange Three Messages Citizen, Old, and Anyone Many may say that within every piece of literature, object, and spoken word there is a deeper meaning, or perhaps a hidden message. These hidden meanings are often hard to find and require more thought. In the three poems The Unknown Citizen , Old Age Sticks , and Anyone lived in a Pretty How Town there is a hidden meaning behind each word. Some could say that they all tie together in some way. The three messages from these three poems will be examined in the paragraphs below. Here is the way these three messages, can be deciphered within each text. In the first poem The Unknown Citizen we can see that Mr. W.H. Auden is diving into a more elaborate view of how he believes that the government just views this man as a number. For example when Mr. Auden says Was he free? Was he happy? The question is absurd: Had anything been wrong, we should certainly have heard . (Pg.775) In this line this shows that the government only cared about statistics. They did not care much about whether or not if he was satisfied in his life or if he wanted anything more to do. All they seemed to care about was the reports they had about his life. When he says Yet, he wasn t a scab or odd in his views (Pg.775) Mr. Auden is explaining the this unknown citizen was not particularly different in his views and that he did not particularly stand up for things he believe in. This is makes him just another person, and nothing special about him. With this text it is easily shown that sometimes all you are in society is a number. This unknown citizen did not disturb the universe as many people strive to do in their lives. In the poem Old Age Sticks , we can see the deeper meaning behind it at first it may be the hardest thing in the world to read, but that is because Mr. E.E. Cummings uses words to create confusion. However, the meaning behind this is that the young continue to grow old and the old try to tell the youth what to do and what not to do which is super controversial for example, Old age sticks up Keep off Signs and youth yanks them down ... • 40. Biometrics And Human Physical Characteristics The Cambridge dictionary defines biometrics as detailed information about someone s body, such as patterns of color in their eyes, that can be used to prove who that person is. However, TechTerms defines biometrics as technology used to detect and recognize human physical characteristics. There are two categories of biometric identifiers which are Physiological characteristics that consists of fingerprint, face recognition, DNA, palm print, hand geometry, iris recognition, odor/scent, etc. and Behavioral characteristics which consists for voice recognition, gait recognition, etc. In recent years, it has become more and more popular for biometrics to be used as an authentication tool (e.g. mobile phone passwords using fingerprint scan, room entries using fingerprint or iris scan, etc.) because it is believed to be more reliable and genuine than the traditional recognition systems (e.g. phone passcodes, keys, tokens/tubs, etc.). This is mostly because every person has their unique biometric features that cannot be mimicked e.g. the ridges of a fingerprint is so unique that even dust or water on a person s finger could change the way the ridges are read, the structure of the iris has its different structure is every individual person, Palm print is also varies from person to person with size or tiny features, facial recognition software s are also a perfect example because facial structures differ from person to person hence why it is almost impossible for two people to look ... • 42. Janie s Motif Journal 3 In the novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God, by Zora Neale Hurston, Janie creates an idea of real love during her sexual awakening. Her idea of real love centers around two people working together, loving each other, and being happy in marriage. This idea drives Janie to search for this love. In the process of her search, Janie encounters relationships that are abusive and oppressive. These relationships allow her to understand what real love is in contrast from mislove. Moreover, Janie becomes more independent in the midst of a male dominated society and learns to embrace her sexuality despite society s idea of how women should behave. Hurston constructs Janie s character arc through the use of motifs. Hurston uses the motif of bees, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During her relationship with Logan Killicks, Janie never mentions bees or trees during her interactions with Logan. In fact, the only time she refers to bees or trees is when she complains about the union. The absence of the motif during their relationship emphasizes that Janie did not benefit from her marriage with Logan. This is the first occurence of mislove in Janie s life. The second occurence of mislove appears during Janie s relationship with Joe. Joe did not represent the sun up and pollen and blooming trees, (29) foreshadowing that Janie would not find her true love in this relationship. Indeed, she enters an oppressive marriage with Joe. Joe order[es] Janie to tie up her hair (55) and cover it with a rag because her hair attracts men and he want[s] her submission (71). He suppresses her sexuality and strips her of her independence. Consequently, [s]he had no more blossomy openings dusting pollen over her man. (72). Janie finally realizes that her marriage with Joe is not real love, rather, it is mislove. Real love means that both partners benefit, but [s]he got nothing from Jody except what money could buy (77). This experience with Jody causes Janie to understand the difference between real love and mislove. She also understands that her sexuality and autonomy is significant to her. When Jody dies, Janie embraces her independence and sexuality, letting her hair in one thick braid [to swing] well below her waist. (89). Her experiences with mislove does not destroy her. Dance Me Outside Essay example The video, Dance Me Outside , did a great job of portraying the gross disregard for a Native American s life in the case of Little Margaret as well as the biases within the judicial system and restorative justice. The director also emphasizes how Native American s take care of their own in many instances throughout the film. In the video, a Native American girl, Little Margaret is murdered after a night out at the bar. Little Margaret s body was carelessly tossed next to the river where two of the main characters, Silas and Frank, find her. The two are stunned with how recklessly someone just left her. The plans were set in place and the parts were played by each Native American, from getting Illiana pregnant by Gooch, her ex boyfriend, to taking her white husband out and distracting him to make the plan work as well as the group carrying out a plan to kill Clarence for the murder of Little Margaret. Intuitively, the night that the group of Native American men were going to revenge Little Margaret s death and kill Clarence, the Native American women were so in tune with what was happening even though there were not a part of the planning that one of the Native American women, Sadie, Silas girlfriend, takes it upon herself to kill Clarence before Silas does because she knows that if Silas kills Clarence, he will not be able to fulfill his dreams of becoming a mechanic and would spend his life in jail. She knew that if she killed him, she would not be a suspect and Silas would have an alibi. Upon Clarence s murder, the entire group of Native American friends was taken to the police station for questioning. • 45. Classical Conditioning And Observational Learning Classical conditioning, operant conditioning, as well as observational learning don t only hold their influence in the field of psychology but can also affect the experiences in one s life. These three concepts/theories are able to leave an impact through the duration of an individual s development and life. Classical conditioning, operant conditioning and observational learning have been able to play a pivotal role through my initial fear then eventual confidence with public speaking. Classical conditioning is the learning process that occurs when two stimuli are repeatedly paired . A stimulus is what causes a reaction to be initiated. This can be applicable to many situations, an example being in training a dog. An individual could place a bowl of food ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Once the food is taken away and replaced with a ringing of a bell (neutral stimulus), the dog will no longer salivate. The neutral stimulus is a stimulus that at first doesn t produce a significant response but will eventually become a conditioned stimulus, especially in classical conditioning. Then when the bell rings and is presented along with a bowl of food the dog will respond by salivating. Now, the individual will only have to ring the bell (without the bowl of food present) in order for the dog to respond by salivating, this in turn being the conditioned response. This type of learning process was used in similar way when I had to present in front of the class. I knew I would have to eventually present my final project in front of my class. Knowing this caused me to be quite nervous, causing my heart to pound and my forehead to sweat. The knowledge of having to present ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Machismo, in Latin American countries was derived from the word macho meaning an intense masculine pride. Machismo was first used in 1948, and was taken as a code of honour for men, rules that would make you considered macho. Respect and reputation are highly regarded as important traits in Machismo, and are the driving force of reason in the novel. (Add another sentence about the broadness of Machismo). I felt that I was the one who was going to die, my sister said. But no matter how much they tossed the story back and forth, no one could explain to me how poor Santiago Nasar ended up being involved in such a mix up. The only thing they knew for sure was that Angela Vicario s brothers were waiting for him to kill him. (Chapter 1 Page 38). Even the groups of people who were most likely to be against the killing either supported it or did not object to it. The priest the brothers visit after the killing has concluded, says they are innocent before God, which both the priest and the brothers agree upon We killed him openly, Pedro Vicario said, but we re innocent. Perhaps before God, said Father Amador. Before God and before men, Pablo Vicario said. It was a matter of honor. (Chapter 3 Page 73). Even though murder is a sin designated by the 10 commandments. The law is on their side as well, both the brothers only receiving 3 years in prison for 1st degree murder.
