What is anxiety disorder? the types of anxiety
disorders and there causes and treatment and
how the affect university students.
What is Anxiety Disorder?
It's natural to worry during stressful times. But some
people feel tense and anxious day after day, even
when there is little to worry about.
Anxiety vs. Anxiety Disorder
Anxiety is a normal human emotion that everyone
experiences. People feel anxious. Anxiety disorders,
however, are different. They can cause such distress
that it interferes with a person's ability to lead a normal
life. An anxiety disorder is a serious mental illness. For
people with anxiety disorders, worry and fear are
constant and overwhelming, and can be crippling.
Causes of Anxiety Disorder
The exact cause of anxiety disorder is unknown. However Various
studies have shown that:
1. Anxiety runs in the families, which means it can be inherited from
tone or both parents.
2. Environmental factors (such as a trauma or significant event) may
trigger an anxiety disorder in people.
Symptoms of Anxiety
Disorder
• Feelings of panic, fear, and uneasiness
• Problems sleeping
• Cold or sweaty hands and/or feet
• Shortness of breath
• Heart palpitations
• Chills or hot flashes
Symptoms of Anxiety
Disorder
• An inability to be still and calm
• Dry mouth
• Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet
• Nausea
• Muscle tension
• Dizziness
Types of Anxiety Disorder
•Generalized Anxiety Disorder
•Social Anxiety Disorder
•Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
•Phobia
•Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Generalized Anxiety Disorder
This disorder involves excessive, unrealistic
worry and tension, even if there is little or
nothing to provoke the anxiety. When this lasts
for six months or longer, it may be generalized
anxiety disorder or GAD.
Social anxiety disorder involves overwhelming
worry and self-consciousness about everyday
social situations. The worry often centres on a
fear of being judged by others, or behaving in a
way that might cause embarrassment or lead to
ridicule.
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
Rape, abuse, physical assaults, accidents, or a
natural disaster can lead to this type of
anxiety. Symptoms include vivid flashbacks and
a loss of interest in activities that were once
enjoyable.
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
People with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
have troubling thoughts they can't control. Some
people feel that they must perform senseless rituals.
Common compulsions include excessive hand-
washing and locking the door repeatedly.
Phobias
The word phobia comes from the Greek word for flight, and
terror.
Causes
• Traumatic events, like almost drowning can cause a
person to be afraid of water.
• Childhood events are the leading causes of phobias.
Eg. Howard Hughes
Near the end of his life, He was so afraid of germs (mysophobia) that
he burned his clothes if someone near him got sick, and wore tissue
boxes on his feet to protect them.
His phobia probably began in his childhood, when his mother checked
him every day for diseases.

Nomophobia

Answer: People who have this phobia are afraid of being
trapped in a busy place, such as a bank, with no way to get out
easily.

Panic Disorder
People with this condition have feelings of terror that
strike suddenly and repeatedly with no warning. Panic
attacks is associated with all the other types of
Anxiety
Panic Attack
1. Sweating
2. chest pain
3. palpitations (unusually strong or irregular heartbeats)
4. feeling of choking
5. Feelings which may make the person feel like he or she is having a
heart attack or "going crazy."
It cannot be prevented but they are:
1. Avoid caffeine and alcohol
2. Check over the counter medication that many
chemicals that can increase anxiety symptoms
3. Seek counselling and support if you start to
regularly feel anxious with no apparent cause.
Can Anxiety Disorder be prevented?
Confrontation
Confronting a phobia could make it worse. Therapists
recommend that people face their fears slowly, over time.
For example, someone afraid of flying would work up to
getting on a flight.
Other phobia treatments focus on changing negative
thoughts and behaviours.
Treatments
Medication
Drugs used to reduce the symptoms of anxiety
disorders include anti-depressants and anxiety-
reducing drugs.
Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy addresses the emotional response to mental
illness. It is a process in which trained mental health
professionals help people by talking through strategies for
understanding and dealing with their disorder.
Cognitive-behavioural therapy: This is a particular
type of psychotherapy in which the person learns to
recognize and change thought patterns and
behaviours that lead to troublesome feelings.
Relaxation therapy
Relaxation techniques that would help to release
Dietary and lifestyle changes
For people who have anxiety disorders, the food they eat causes
anxiety attacks. For example, alcoholic beverage, unrefined sugars
Other foods depend on how much you understand you own anxiety. If
you have panic attacks, you may want to avoid coffee, because coffee
can increase your heart rate and trigger an attack. But if you have
more general anxiety, coffee may actually be beneficial.

Anxiety Disorder

  • 2. Thesis Statement What is anxiety disorder? the types of anxiety disorders and there causes and treatment and how the affect university students.
  • 3. What is Anxiety Disorder? It's natural to worry during stressful times. But some people feel tense and anxious day after day, even when there is little to worry about.
  • 4. Anxiety vs. Anxiety Disorder Anxiety is a normal human emotion that everyone experiences. People feel anxious. Anxiety disorders, however, are different. They can cause such distress that it interferes with a person's ability to lead a normal life. An anxiety disorder is a serious mental illness. For people with anxiety disorders, worry and fear are constant and overwhelming, and can be crippling.
  • 5. Causes of Anxiety Disorder The exact cause of anxiety disorder is unknown. However Various studies have shown that: 1. Anxiety runs in the families, which means it can be inherited from tone or both parents. 2. Environmental factors (such as a trauma or significant event) may trigger an anxiety disorder in people.
  • 6. Symptoms of Anxiety Disorder • Feelings of panic, fear, and uneasiness • Problems sleeping • Cold or sweaty hands and/or feet • Shortness of breath • Heart palpitations • Chills or hot flashes
  • 7. Symptoms of Anxiety Disorder • An inability to be still and calm • Dry mouth • Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet • Nausea • Muscle tension • Dizziness
  • 8. Types of Anxiety Disorder •Generalized Anxiety Disorder •Social Anxiety Disorder •Post Traumatic Stress Disorder •Phobia •Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
  • 9. Generalized Anxiety Disorder This disorder involves excessive, unrealistic worry and tension, even if there is little or nothing to provoke the anxiety. When this lasts for six months or longer, it may be generalized anxiety disorder or GAD.
  • 10. Social anxiety disorder involves overwhelming worry and self-consciousness about everyday social situations. The worry often centres on a fear of being judged by others, or behaving in a way that might cause embarrassment or lead to ridicule.
  • 11. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Rape, abuse, physical assaults, accidents, or a natural disaster can lead to this type of anxiety. Symptoms include vivid flashbacks and a loss of interest in activities that were once enjoyable.
  • 12. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder People with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) have troubling thoughts they can't control. Some people feel that they must perform senseless rituals. Common compulsions include excessive hand- washing and locking the door repeatedly.
  • 13. Phobias The word phobia comes from the Greek word for flight, and terror.
  • 14. Causes • Traumatic events, like almost drowning can cause a person to be afraid of water. • Childhood events are the leading causes of phobias.
  • 15. Eg. Howard Hughes Near the end of his life, He was so afraid of germs (mysophobia) that he burned his clothes if someone near him got sick, and wore tissue boxes on his feet to protect them. His phobia probably began in his childhood, when his mother checked him every day for diseases.

  • 24. Panic Disorder People with this condition have feelings of terror that strike suddenly and repeatedly with no warning. Panic attacks is associated with all the other types of Anxiety
  • 25. Panic Attack 1. Sweating 2. chest pain 3. palpitations (unusually strong or irregular heartbeats) 4. feeling of choking 5. Feelings which may make the person feel like he or she is having a heart attack or "going crazy."
  • 26. It cannot be prevented but they are: 1. Avoid caffeine and alcohol 2. Check over the counter medication that many chemicals that can increase anxiety symptoms 3. Seek counselling and support if you start to regularly feel anxious with no apparent cause. Can Anxiety Disorder be prevented?
  • 27. Confrontation Confronting a phobia could make it worse. Therapists recommend that people face their fears slowly, over time. For example, someone afraid of flying would work up to getting on a flight. Other phobia treatments focus on changing negative thoughts and behaviours.
  • 29. Medication Drugs used to reduce the symptoms of anxiety disorders include anti-depressants and anxiety- reducing drugs.
  • 30. Psychotherapy Psychotherapy addresses the emotional response to mental illness. It is a process in which trained mental health professionals help people by talking through strategies for understanding and dealing with their disorder.
  • 31. Cognitive-behavioural therapy: This is a particular type of psychotherapy in which the person learns to recognize and change thought patterns and behaviours that lead to troublesome feelings.

  • 33. Dietary and lifestyle changes For people who have anxiety disorders, the food they eat causes anxiety attacks. For example, alcoholic beverage, unrefined sugars Other foods depend on how much you understand you own anxiety. If you have panic attacks, you may want to avoid coffee, because coffee can increase your heart rate and trigger an attack. But if you have more general anxiety, coffee may actually be beneficial.

  2. Mention this: Fear of asparagus is also real. It’s called spargarophobia.
  3. The fear can be so extreme that some people stay in their homes. Most people who have agoraphobia develop it in their 20s.
  4. many buildings don’t label the 13th floor. People who live or stay on the actual 13th floor might be less anxious because they believe they are on the 14th floor.
  5. So when your other anxiety is triggered, or a fear comes into play, you usally have a panic attack
  6. To phobia only: First, he might look at a photo of a plane. Then watch a video before going to the airport to see a plane take off. Finally, he might be able to fly.

  8. It's called cognitive behavioral therapy or CBT. A counselor helps you identify negative thoughts and actions. CBT may include homework, such as writing down the thoughts that lead to excess worry. You will also learn calming strategies. People can feel better in three to four months.
