An Ultra-Compact and Efficient Li-ion Battery Charger

This document describes the design of an ultra-compact and efficient Li-ion battery charger circuit intended for use in biomedical implants. The circuit uses an operational transconductance amplifier (OTA) to naturally transition between constant current and constant voltage charging modes with over 75% efficiency while occupying a small layout area of 0.15 mm2. It does not require sense resistors to detect end-of-charge, improving accuracy and reducing variability compared to previous designs. Experimental results show the circuit can accurately charge batteries to 99.8% efficiency with continuous transitions between charging modes.

This circuit automatically stops charging AA batteries when they are fully charged. When the battery voltage reaches 1.3V per cell, the voltage drop decreases and cuts off the transistors, de-energizing the relay to stop charging. It can charge partially discharged batteries to 7.35V total for 4 cells at 70mA, stopping when the voltage indicates the cells are fully charged.

Electricity can be produced using chemical effect where the movement of ions constitutes a flow of current through the electrolyte. Electrochemical cells are used as storage cells where chemical energy can be converted into electrical energy. The most efficient and widely used method for the generation of electricity is based on the laws of Electromagnetic Induction. According to this law electromotive force is induced in a conductor whenever the conductor cuts across magnetic lines of flux. The invention of the Diode Valve in 1904 and the invention of the triode valve in 1906 and their largescale production from 1920 onwards helped to manufacture electronic products and instruments. The invention of the galena-based Cat’s whisker detector in 1906 was the milestone of manufacturing crystal radio receivers. Cuprous oxide rectifier was invented in 1926 and was used for the rectification of power supply frequencies. Selenium rectifier was invented in 1933 and it was also used for the rectification of power frequencies but selenium rectifier was more efficient and was best in low-voltage, heavy current applications. Commercial manufacturing of germanium crystal diode was started in 1946. Then invention of the bipolar junction transistor in 1948 had replaced the valves because of low power, low cost, small size and long-lasting. Electrical products are generally operated from the mains power supply. But electronic products are operated by D.C supply and nowadays most of the communication devices are designed to be operated by the low-watt power supply. Scientists and researchers are developing low power, low heat dissipation, low dropout, miniature and energy harvesting efficient power supply.

Power supply basics

Common applications of power supplies include converting household AC current to lower DC voltages required by electronics and providing stable, regulated power.
12 v dc to 220v ac
This project report describes the design and components of a 12V DC to 220V AC converter. The key components are an inverter, step-up transformer, rechargeable battery, battery charger, resistors, capacitors, transistors, LED bulb, and MOSFET. The inverter uses an oscillator and amplifier circuit with MOSFETs to generate a 50Hz square wave that is stepped up by the transformer to 220V AC. The battery provides 12V DC power input and can be recharged by the battery charger. The converter effectively powers loads up to 85W by converting stored DC battery power to a 220V AC output.
Switch mode power supply
Switching DC power supplies (SMPS) convert unregulated AC or DC input voltage to a regulated DC output voltage using a high frequency DC-to-DC converter and transformer. 12 v dc to 220v ac
This project report describes the design and components of a 12V DC to 220V AC converter. The key components are an inverter, step-up transformer, rechargeable battery, battery charger, resistors, capacitors, transistors, LED bulb, and MOSFET. The inverter uses an oscillator and amplifier circuit with MOSFETs to generate a 50Hz square wave that is stepped up by the transformer to 220V AC. The battery provides 12V DC power input and can be recharged by the battery charger. The converter effectively powers loads up to 85W by converting stored DC battery power to a 220V AC output.
Switch mode power supply

The long established battery chargers are having many drawbacks such as prominent ripple charging current, less efficiency and bulky in size. To overcome these drawbacks of conventional battery charger, several charging circuits have been proposed and inevitability force to design a high-performance battery charger with small in size and improved efficiency. In this paper solar photovoltaic system based half-bridge series–parallel resonant converter (HBSPRC) charger is proposed for battery interface. The converter is designed to abolish low and high-frequency ripple currents and thus take full advantage of the life of secondary battery circuit. This is achieved by designing converter switches turn on at zero current and zero voltage with switching frequency greater than that of resonance frequency which leads to freewheeling diodes need not have very fast reverse-recovery characteristics. The performance of the power converters depends upon the control method adopted; in this work fuzzy logic controller is used for controlling the output voltage of HBSPRC. The fuzzy control scheme for the HBSPR converter has been designed and validated in hardware implementation of HBSPRC switching technique. From the results, it is found that the proposed battery charging system which reduces the switching loss and voltage stress across the power switches which increases the efficiency of the converter.Research Inventy : International Journal of Engineering and Science

Intelligent battery charger

This document describes the design and development of a cost-effective automatic cutoff photovoltaic (PV) charge controller with indicators. The controller uses a buck converter topology with a DC-DC converter circuit to charge batteries from a PV panel in a way that prevents overcharging and optimizes the battery recharging cycle. It was implemented using inexpensive hardware components and tested with different PV cell and battery voltage levels. The proposed system provides regulated voltage and current output suitable for automatic on/off switching. 60Hz, selection of power and passive components, voltage and current stress
of power transistors. In the final this paper discusses about loss distribution
of the components and comparison of new converter technique with existing
pre-charging techniques.

An Embedded system is a controller programmed and controlled by a Real Time Operating System RTOS with a dedicated function within a larger mechanical or electrical system, often with Real Time computing constraints. Embedded systems control many devices in common use today. The project aims to design an air, water, and noise pollution monitoring and controlling using internet of things. The level of pollution has increased with times by lot of factors like the increase in population, increased vehicle use, industrialization and urbanization which results in harmful effects on human wellbeing by directly affecting health of population exposed to it. In order to monitor quality of air, water quality and sound level of the environment over IoT based new framework is proposed which is based on data acquisition, transmission and controlling. The proposed bridgeless converter precedes a flyback converter to manage the charging of 48V 100Ah battery throughout the constant current CC constant voltage CV profile as well as built in PFC capability at the mains side is inherited. An 850W prototype is designed and developed tosupport the enhanced performance of the battery charger by reconstructing the line current waveform and significantly reducing the input harmonics distortion to the recommended IEC 61000 3 2 standard. This document describes a silicon carbide based temperature sensor that uses optical pyrometry and laser interferometry to measure high temperatures. The sensor is able to reliably measure temperatures up to 2500°C, which makes it suitable for applications like gas turbine combustion chambers that require measuring temperatures of 1500°C. It works by using a tunable laser, beam splitter, and optical filters to direct thermal radiation from a silicon carbide target onto detectors. The detector output is related to temperature based on Planck's law and is calibrated by recording output ratios at different temperatures to create a calibration curve. Tests showed the sensor can measure temperature within 0.1°C resolution and is more accurate than thermocouples.

Passive Hybrid MEMS for High-Temperature Telemetric Measurements
A hybrid MEMS sensor is described that uses inductive telemetry for contactless, high-temperature measurements in harsh environments. The passive sensor uses a bent beam structure connected to interdigitated combs to change capacitance with temperature. It communicates wirelessly with a readout unit through coupled inductors. Testing showed the sensor's capacitance and the measured temperatures agreed well with a reference sensor up to 350 degrees C, demonstrating its effectiveness for remote, high-temperature industrial monitoring.
PROTOTYPING ECO POWER GENERATOR USING GIANT MAGNETOSTRICTION MATERIAL
This document discusses the design and testing of a Giant Magnetostriction Electric power Generator (GMEG) that converts vibration energy into electricity. The GMEG uses a Terfenol-D giant magnetostrictive material which changes shape under magnetic fields. Experimental results showed the GMEG could generate over 100W of power from a dropped metal ball and that output voltage increased with an applied preload of 8MPa to the Terfenol-D. A vibration deflector was also designed to redirect vibrations to the GMEG from different angles.
Measuring Chest Movement
This study aimed to detect and measure chest wall motion using an array of unobtrusive pressure sensors placed beneath a mattress. The pressure sensor data was compared to measurements from respiratory inductance plethysmography bands. Five participants performed different breathing patterns in various positions while sensor data was recorded. The pressure sensor signals were aligned using cross-correlation and summed to increase signal amplitude. Inspiration and expiration segments were identified and delays between signals were calculated. When corrected for delays, the pressure sensor data showed similar chest movement detection to the reference plethysmography bands, suggesting this method could enable long-term respiratory monitoring.
RADIATION HARDENED CHIPS
Radiation hardened chips are designed to resist damage from ionizing radiation like that encountered in space, around nuclear reactors, and near particle accelerators. They use techniques like hardened substrates, shielding, and error correction to prevent issues like data corruption from radiation. Major sources of damaging radiation include Van Allen belts, cosmic rays, solar particles, and nuclear reactions. Radiation hardening aims to let electronics reliably function in radiation-intensive environments like satellites and nuclear facilities.
