The ICTPD Cluster Journey
• Angie Simmons
One ICTPD Cluster Journey
• Started with use of ICT tools for Information transfer
model of learning – search topic, cut and paste
projects, publishing good work - low level use
• Behavourist model – software with pre-determined
outcomes – interact with software - user not the
  creator of outcomes.
• Constructivist model – use application as a tool –
  open ended software
• Co-constructivist – open ended building together –
eg using Skype to collaborate with another class or
  expert in another place
Cluster Journey
• At the end of the journey students using ICT
  tools as creators of content
• Constructivist model – use application as a
  tool – open ended software
• Co-constructivist – open ended building
together – eg using Voice Thread to engage in
  collaborative reflection
Getting there…..
• Not about teacher confidence in using
applications but about teacher confidence in
letting go and handing the power over to the
  students to learn and teach
• Give two students a brief – can you learn about
this programme I’ve heard about – it’s called
Scratch and see if you can come up with a way to
use this to show the principles of flight, “I’ll give
you the afternoon to do this while we do our art
project. Tomorrow I’ll set up the data projector
and you can show the class.”
Getting there…..
• Technology has to work!
• Technology has to be in the classroom
  ready for action!
• Principals need to be active participants
• Systems need to be in place!
• Support and encouragement for
  teachers!
What you can do..
• Vision building with staff - ownership and buy
  in

• Team building - regular opportunities for
  sharing within a professional learning
  community
What you can do..
• Strategy planning to cover infrastructure,
  curriculum and professional development
  linked to vision
• Long term - over three years with monitoring
  and reviewing system each term
• Action planning for teacher PD - linked to
vision - PD as action research cycle -
  plan/implement/review/modify
What you can do..
• At syndicate planning level plan to include rich
open ended tasks utilising the capabilities of
ICT tools to enhance the learning
• At weekly planning level translate these tasks
to specific planning – set up an ICT roster with
names and activities which link to the
learning, this ensures all students have
opportunities and have a clear idea of their
  goals.
Ideas
• Not much money so using freeware – examples
Pivot animation to create Olympic distance
  throwing and other events
• Using BlockCad to design the school swimming
  pool
• Class wiki pages to showcase student work or use
  as e-portfolio
• Podcasting own fairy tales and myths
• VoiceThread to broadcast and use as a reflection
  tool for student work
• Using Powerpoint for interactive mihi - invisible
hot spots - see the cluster website for
  instructions and examples
Ideas -each school
• Thinking tool box - templates for thinking
  maps/graphic organizers across the school
• Inquiry model implementation package
• Professional development wiki for sharing
  readings/ideas/examples of best practice
• Staff sharing - meetings held in different
teacher’s classrooms so everyone has a chance to
chair a meeting and showcase their
achievements/ideas - ten minute slot to share ICT
skills/ideas - each teacher has a turn at one
  meeting per term
• Buddy classes for PD mentoring
Ideas - Cluster
• Cluster share days each term with
representatives from each school - all teachers
  not just the leaders
• Cluster web site - links to school sites and
  repository for cluster documents
• Google Docs - sharing the creation of
  spreadsheets, presentations and documents
• Management meetings with facilitator and
principals at the start of each term - share a
lunch and review progress - plan accordingly with
a view to milestone reporting and cluster action
  plan
• Share outcomes of conference attendance
