Casey And Goliath Similarities
In the poem Casey at the bat and the story David and Goliath there are similarities and differences.
The characters Casey and David have similarities. One of these similarities is that they are both
confident. In David and Goliath it says, Today the Lord will help me defeat you. I ll knock you down
and cut off your head, and I ll feed the bodies of the other Philistine soldiers to the birds and wild
animals. This shows that David is confident that the lord will help him kill Goliath. In Casey at the bat
it says, Close by the sturdy batsman the ball unheeded sped That ain t my style, said Casey. This
shows that because Casey was confident he thought that the way the ball was thrown wasn t his style.
The next similarity between ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In David and Goliath it says, The king is offering a big reward to the man who kills Goliath. That man
will even get to marry the king s daughter, and no one in his family will ever have to pay taxes again.
This shows why David wanted to try and kill Goliath. The last similarity is that both characters are
brave. In Casey at the bat it says, That ain t my style, said Casey. Strike one, the umpire said. Also it
says, But Casey still ignored it, and the umpire said, Strike two. This shows that Casey is brave
because he let two of the three balls go by him. In David and Goliath it says that David goes out there
with only a piece of wood while Goliath has a sword and shield. This proves that David is brave
because He went to kill someone with a sword, with a piece of wood and a rock. Both of the characters
also have many things that make them different. The first thing that makes them different is that Casey
had many cheering fans to help with his confidence whereas no one was cheering for David. In the
poem Casey at the bat it states, And when, responding to the cheers, he lightly doffed his hat, No
stranger in the crowd could doubt twas Casey at the bat. Ten thousand eyes were on him as he rubbed
his hands with dirt; Five thousand tongues applauded when he wiped them on his shirt. This part of
the poem tells that five thousand people were there

Taking a Look at Wikileaks
Wikileaks, cofounded in 2006 by editor in chief Julian Assange, is a site designed to announce and
publicize sensitive information. The goal of Wikileaks is to provide protection for journalists, citizens,
and anyone who might need to be protected from the free based or sensitive information they upload
to the site. Wikileaks is protected by a network of software, anonymous postal drops, and lawyers,
operating on a policy of secrecy to keep all of its posters safe from possible reprisals.
I believe Wikileaks is in the right, as it allows its users to expose sensitive information and secrets that
citizens need to know about. Governments have been criticizing some of the content posted, however,
there is little legally that they can do. Wikileaks is essentially another branch or avenue of the public
press, and there is no official secrets act to stop information from being posted. There are people doing
pre publication reviews of articles posted; people who have a vested interest in ensuring the accuracy
of the material.
In recent years, Wikileaks has acquired mixed public reception, receiving numerous awards and
appraisal, as well as harsh criticism. In 2008 and 2009, Wikileaks received the New Media Award, and
in 2010, it was listed as a website that could change the way the news works. It was praised as a tool
to empower citizens to voice their opinions and report the truth. However, the site received criticism
for defacing the value of a journalist. Journalists

Proposed Cities For Expansion Teams
With growing interest in a sport comes more fans in new places. In an effort to grow their franchise,
the NHL has been known to add expansion teams. The league started in 1942 with just six teams
known as The Original Six and has expanded to 30 teams since then with the last teams being added in
2000 (Various). Sixteen years after the last expansion teams were added, the league is looking to add
more. There are four proposed cities for expansion teams: Las Vegas, Seattle, Quebec City, and a
second team in Toronto. Just because a city is a proposed city does not mean that they will be getting a
team. There is a selection process that includes a committee approved by the NHL Commissioner,
Gary Bettman, and a very high expansion fee of $500 million. Adding new expansion teams to the
league is a bigger deal than it may seem and takes a good bit of effort: the perfect market must be
chosen, an arena deal has to be worked out, a staff needs to be hired and prepared, team details need to
be finalized, financial situations have to be looked at, and the remaining teams have to prepare for the
addition of a new team. For the other teams, this means signing more players to no move clauses or
even having them waived so they are prepared for the expansion draft. Despite the looming idea of
everything that needs to be taken care of, the league has decided on and approved a new expansion
team: Las Vegas. Las Vegas is what many may call the perfect opportunity for the NHL. There are

Othello s Influence On The World Of Opera
Verdi s Othello has had a profound influence on the world of opera, and considered by many critics to
be his best work. Othello has been performed throughout the world, debuting in over 25 countries
within the first fifty years of its creation (Stanford). It has been performed all over the globe by world
renowned operettists, in theatres such as the Lincoln Center in New York, the Sydney Opera House in
Sydney, and the Bolshoi in Russia. Othello is about a general who is led to believe his wife is cheating
on him, when in reality she is not, and deceived by Iago, a man he trusted. Othello has two love duets
between the same characters, but with very different moods and relationships, which are portrayed
through the dialogue, the stage actions, and most importantly the musical strategies employed.
The opera Othello was written by Verdi, one of the most prominent opera writers in the late 1800 s. He
was born in 1813 in northern Italy, however, most of his work took place in Milan, Italy. This is
where, on February 5th of 1887, Othello was first performed, at the Teatro alla Scala (Stanford). Verdi
s opera Othello is based off of Shakespeare s play Othello, which was written in 1622. Verdi based
many of his operas off of Shakespeare s plays, such as his opera

Macbeth that was based on the play
Macbeth, first performed in 1847, and his opera Falstaff, based on the play The Merry Wives of
Windsor, first performed in 1893. In Othello, a black Moor general has just returned from a

Case analysis from ego psychology perspectives Essay
Introduction
This paper, divided into two parts, is intended to understand April s case in a thoughtfully eclectic way
from a social work perspective by applying human behavior theories. The first part shows the use of
Ego Psychology to illustrate how loss from April s father s death interrupted her development by
disrupting her ego function. The second part shows the assessment of April s biological,
psychological, and social emotional development, the ecological factors which affected her
development, and the cultural stereotype expectation on normal development.
Question One:
April s arrival was not expected by her mother; this unexpected pregnancy may have caused stress to
the mother (Joy) while she carried April. This was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Bowlby pointed out that if children are not given accurate information about a death, they cannot
grieve appropriately. The family did not give April a chance to explore and express her grief over the
loss. These choices would impact her ego function. Since she could not make sense of the situation,
she could not modulate her affect and behavior in order to cope with the pain of loss. She
automatically and unconsciously used one of the most important ego functions defense mechanism to
cope with the trauma. She went into denial, which interfered with her reality testing.
She was told that her father went to heaven, which, to her, meant that he was in a distant place. As
Silverman, Nickman, and Worden (1992) stated, April, as other children typically display, developed
an inner construction of her father that assisted her in coping with her losses and with all of the
ensuing changes in her life. She even developed magic thinking : a fantasy that her father would return
as shown in the picture she drew of her father coming in and out of the house by using the ladder. But
with time passing, the reality of her father s absence becoming increasingly permanent was reinforced.
She could not always hold her sadness and fear as shown through her nightmares, crying, or
screaming. Sometimes, she regressed to earlier developmental stages, as manifested in her toddler like
behavior, for

Arsenic Contamination Essay
Introduction
Beside the natural activities, almost all human activities also have potential contribution to Arsenic
contamination in the environment as side effects occurs in many parts of the world and is a global
problem. In many areas As level has crossed the safe threshold level. Large scale groundwater
pollution by geogenic arsenic (As) in West Bengal and Bangladesh has recently promoted this element
into an environmental pollutant of prime concern. Epidemiological studies have documented various
adverse effects on the human population. Arsenic contaminated soils, sediments, and sludge are the
major sources of arsenic contamination of the food chain, surface water, groundwater, and drinking
water (WT Frankenberger Arshad, 2002). Other potential sources of arsenic contamination are the
chemicals used extensively in agriculture as pesticides, insecticides, defoliants, wood preservatives,
and soil sterilants (AZCUE NRIAGU, 1994). Currently available techniques for the remediation of As
contaminated soil are very expensive and time consuming, often hazardous to workers, and capable of
producing secondary wastes (LOMBI, ZHAO, DUNHAM, MCGRATH, 2000). Phytoextraction, the
use of green plants to clean up contaminated soil, has attracted attention as an environmentally
friendly, low input remediation technique. It uses plants that extract heavy metals from the soil and
accumulate it in the harvestable, above ground biomass.

The Keynesian Fiscal Policy Solution Aggregate Demand
The Keynesian Fiscal Policy Solution Aggregate Demand Problems
The 1920 s witnessed a rise of a new economic policy which had not yet been seen prior to the great
depression. Before the great depression, the widely accepted economic policy which was implemented
and practiced around the world was called Natural Economics. Natural Economics was a fiscal policy
that embodied the idea that the economy would eventually take care of itself and run freely without
the government s influence. However, the duration of the Great Depression was so substantial that it
exposed natural economics to be ineffective. This lead British economist John Maynard Keynes to
invent his own economic policy that he introduced to economist around the world with the ... Show

In circumstances; such as war, Keynesians economic policy provides a near perfect solution for
boosting an economy. However, without a war to force an increase in demand, an increase in
government spending would snowball into a business cycle of aggregate demand problems. Aggregate
Demand is the total demand for goods and services within a market and consists of four main
components; investment, consumption, government spending and net exports. These coincide directly
with Keynesian s economic fiscal policy. For boosting aggregate demand is the primary focus and
supposed key to Keynesians fiscal policy solution. Since aggregate demand coincides directly with
Keynesian s economic policy, all of the policy s long term problems become aggregate demand
problems. With Keynes policy s increase in government spending comes an initial boost in consumer
spending which then boosts aggregate demand. Businesses increase supply and expand to meet this
boosted demand. However once the fiscal stimulus package runs out, the once increased aggregate
demand begins to decrease. The federal reserve begins to then print more money in order to
compensate for the recently depleted fiscal package in order to maintain the aggregate demand levels.
Additional printing of money lowers the value of the dollar thus causing inflation. As inflation rates
rise in the economy consumers purchasing power decreases. With consumers purchasing power

My Understanding Of A Portrait Of The Artist As A Young...
Reading and exploring various literary pieces can be an interesting task for the young mind. By
observing myself and my peers I have developed an opinion, this opinion was reinforced by reading
How to Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas Foster. There are different stages of
comprehension. Authors and readers utilize both experiences and prior knowledge quite often. My
understanding of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man By James Joyce was vastly impacted after
reading Foster s book. Instead of just reading the novel, I dove deeper into the text. Originally I might
have just said the novel was simply a sort of biography. Instead I would consider it a search of identity
and transformation of religious/spiritual perspective.

Although this is its own story, it is nothing new. Considering the idea that everything is apart of one
story, it is more of a symbiotic relationship. When you boil down the facts it is easier: young person,
feels special , wants satisfaction, falls to temptations, questions moral upbringing. Sound familiar? It s
basically 95% of teenagers. I find comfort in the thought that everything in the world is
interconnected, but I never made that connection with literature. When a reader discerns the
individuality of the text while relating with personal experience, the reading gains value.
It is no secret that Joyce is a master of symbolism and allusion. The first stage of comprehension is to
see as much information as possible. Next a reader learns how to pick out more important facts. You
know you are getting somewhere when you notice rhetorical devices while continuing to absorb the
pleasure of the story. Foster talks about how acts of communion are meaningful and representative in
stories. Joyce always makes a point to describe the meal and table. He makes it evident down to the
green and maroon accents. The untrained mind would have frivolously skimmed over the colors, even
though they represent the irish resistance and symbolize the state of politics at the time. Likewise he
alludes to the bible a multitude of times. The bible names many of the tribulations to which humans
are subjected to in their lifetimes. This vast

Truman Made the Right Choice
President Harry Truman s use of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan during the
Second World War is the most controversial decision in history. While it was an undoubtedly difficult
decision, it was indeed necessary in order to end this six year war that had ravaged the world. While
many critics argue that the bomb was used primarily as an act of vengeance toward Japan, simplifying
such a crucial moment in human history downplays the very real threat Japan posed to the United
States. While avoiding strained relations with the other Allied countries, Truman had to assess the
possible danger of the Soviet Union in a post war world. Furthermore, the possibility of an arms race,
the moral implications of using this weapon, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The response of the panel to which the concern was sent was that the use of the bomb would be an
obvious means of saving American lives and shortening the war. While these scientists did not agree
on the issue of its use, all believed it was necessary to control this new technology through
international cooperation. Due to the aforementioned increasing tensions between the two emerging
superpowers, an issue of great concern was if, how and when to approach the Soviets with the news of
the Manhattan Project. In spite of the differences between the Soviets and the United States, by
Truman s main concern was keeping unity amongst the Big Three , realizing that ending the war
depended on the support of both Britain and the Soviet Union. The Interim Committee unanimously
agreed that Truman should inform of the development of the weapon and our plans to use it against
the enemy. They did not advise giving the Soviets specific details of the project, only informing them
in order to enlist Russian cooperation in the set up of future international controls of this new
technology. Of course, because of the terms of the Quebec Agreement, it would also be necessary to
discuss this with Churchill. The continuation of keeping facts from the Soviet Union in spite of the

Economic And Social Conditions On The Health Of People And...
From the Lecture: 1. Many health outcomes such as obesity, average life expectancy, the infant
mortality are directly related to the inequality within a society. Poor health and poverty are directly
related to each other as the poverty level increases the health outcomes worsens. Inequality causes. We
all know that people who live in poorer countries live shorter lives and this is directly related to the
inequality. Unequally access to the healthcare, food, housing, education. Job that does not come with
stress. 2. I think that economic and social conditions effect the health of people and communities.
Economic and social conditions are resulted by the amount of money people have, by power, and by
available resources and all of these are influenced by the policies. In short, if you are closer to the top
of the chart, you are healthier because you have access to the resources to stay healthy which are good
education, a job that pays good, quality healthcare, nutrition, housing, social support, and of course no
discrimination. 3. When I think about illness is socially constructed the first thing that comes to my
mind how the society sees the evilness and how people define it and how they react it. For example,
here in the US when I go see a doctor, doctors do not want to prescribe a medication unless I am dying
because they get paid by the insurance companies if they do not prescribe too much medicines.

What is Zen? Zen is something that can not be put into words. There are a few things that come close

Martin Luther Purgatory Beliefs
Martin Luther, like most traditional Christians, believed that this life was simply a pilgrimage, a
journey toward our destination. That destination was an eternity spent either in heaven or in hell.
There was nothing one could do to earn a spot in heaven God freely forgave the sins of some, and they
could enter heaven. Luther disagreed strongly with the Roman Catholic teaching that there is also a
place called purgatory, because purgatory is not explicitly mentioned in the Bible. The belief in
purgatory developed over the course of the middle Ages, driven by the logic of the Catholic system of
sanctification. Those who were baptized and thus cleansed of the stain of original sin still had to pay
the debt for the offense of sin to a perfect God. In addition, any additional sins must be paid for. You
earned merits toward the debt by performing works, especially the sacraments. Lutheranism believe
that people are saved by God s mercy and forgiveness and not by righteousness for our past or even by
a personal action of deciding to following Jesus. Believing this Lutherans coined the phrase By Faith
Alone

For The Past Forty Years, Ohio Is Believed To Have Gone
For the past forty years, Ohio is believed to have gone through a process of deindustrialization. This
means that Ohio experienced a decline in manufacturing jobs. While this is a simple definition, the
origins of the term deindustrialization gives a deeper, more pejorative meaning to the term. This
darker meaning to the term is perhaps more effectively conveyed through the term rust belt. After
Ohio wen through the process of deindustrialization, the lack of industrial jobs in a once booming
industrial area left many factories empty and decommissioned. As these factories became older and
unused, their rusting facades became a symbol of the deindustrialization that Ohio experienced,
leading someone to coin the term rust belt for the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The term traces its roots back to World War II. The concept of deindustrialization began in Nazi
Germany. The Nazis described the areas that they had invaded in conquered in this way. This is
because they eliminated any industry from the areas that they took over, forcing these states to become
dependent upon Germany for economic and industrial development. This philosophy was also used as
a punishment for those countries, showing the power of Nazi Germany. After the end of the war, the
Allies began to use the term deindustrialization , as well. Essentially taking the definition from the
Nazis, they used this term in discussions of how to punish Nazi Germany in post war rebuilding plans.
Regardless of who was using the term in World War II, there was always a negative connotation
attached to it. Rather than simply saying that it meant a decline in manufacturing jobs for an area, the
term was used as a punishment and a show of power. In its origins, deindustrialization was used by the
winners of a conflict to describe how they would take away industry from the losing nation or state.
For this reason, it can be seen how the term developed a negative connotation. The term grew
tremendously in usage around the 1970s, when factories began to downsize what would become
known as the

must take place. Such action has to have force strong enough for the change to be heard, seen, and
dealt with. Such an action is war. Leon Trotsky said war is the locomotive of history. He was stating
that war is a catalyst for change. Trotsky was a communist who helped to ignite the Russian
Revolution of 1917. Trotsky believed in Marxism, a belief that change had to be revolutionary. [Leon

NO Spiritual Reward for Depriving the Physical Body
There is NO Spiritual Reward for Depriving the Physical Body of Comfort or Pleasure
I. Doctrine
There is a great falsehood that is perpetuated by the modern church, and it is one that threatens the
very mission assigned to every believer in Matthew 28:18 20. Before one can address this falsehood,
one must understand the duty of God s people in this life. It is the believer s task to go and make
disciples of all nations, baptizing them as God ordained, and teaching them how to obey the teachings
of Jesus. What then are the teachings of Jesus? As believers, we hold as doctrine that God the Father,
along with the Holy Spirit and the Son created all that is. He gave Man, God s special creation made
in His own image, dominion over the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This heresy is the idea that there is a spiritual reward for depriving the physical body of comfort or
pleasure. The Catholics who endured the outbreaks of bubonic plague in the Middle Ages sometimes
resorted to self flagellation, a practice of whipping or beating one s self in order to gain favor with
God (and presumably avoid plague). Catholics have long practiced similar traditions, with some
devout Catholics praying on particularly uncomfortable prayer mats or refusing red meat on certain
days. Some Catholic clergy go so far as to wear burlap undergarments, so as to suffer with Christ and
perhaps gain favor with God. This heretical doctrine declares the atonement by Christ to be an
incomplete one, and contradicts His final words, the confirmation that It is finished (John 19:30b).
The particular incarnation of this heresy that pervades even the evangelical churches of today comes
to light in those churches condemnation of various things, including drugs and alcohol. Now, as
described above, all things created by God in the beginning were good. The use of the earth s
resources was given to Man, and with it responsibility. The scriptures indicate that alcohol can be a
deceiver. Immoderate use of alcohol leads to drunkenness, which the scriptures indeed condemn
(Galatians 5:19 21). However, alcohol was never forbidden to the Hebrews, and Jesus himself made it
at the wedding in Cana (John 2). It seems clear that the alcohol itself is not what the scriptures

Lord Of The Flies Violence Analysis
To be violent is to use physical force with the intention of hurting someone or something. In the novel
Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the character of Jack reflects his latent violence onto the other
characters around him. The evolution of Jack s character from proper to primitive, explains that
violence among people can be influenced by a violent leader. The reader sees Jack leading and
influencing violence upon people, when he conducts his hunters to a successful first pig hunt, when
the boys dance and kill Simon, and when Jack s tribe viciously hunts Ralph.
Through his leadership, Jack accentuates the level of violence his hunters are experiencing by taking
them on a successful pig hunt. When Jack cannot deny his urge to kill ... Show more content on

With an invitation to join his new and exceptional tribe, Jack invites all of the boys on the island to a
feast. When everyone has finished eating, Jack suggests that the boys dance, expecting them to do as
he commands: Do our dance! Come on! Dance! (167). All the boys, including those against Jack s
tribe, oblige and join in the fun. As the boys continue to dance, they form a ring, weapons in hand, the
movement becoming similar to that of a hunt. As the night goes on, and the dance becomes more
violent, the boys begin to chant as one: Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood! The movement
became regular while the chant lost its first superficial excitement and began to beat like a steady
pulse...There was the throb and stamp of a single organism (168). This shows how the violent actions
in the novel are not always intentional. Sometimes the boys become so focused on their wild actions
that they do not realize what they are doing or about to do. This occurs as the boys become one in
their hunt like dance, resulting in Simon getting caught in the midst of their ring. The boys, entranced
by the rhythm of the dance, consequently mistake Simon as the beast and attack him with the weapons
they carry, beating him to death. By leading the boys to dance and act in such a savage way, Jack
commands the violent actions that lead to Simon s death.
By using his position as chief and violence,

T. Coraghessan Boyle s Greasy Lake
Greasy Lake Essay In a short story of Greasy Lake by T. Coraghessan Boyle points out the characters
from going Good to be Bad where everything happened in Greasy Lake. It all started with the main
characters, The Narrator, Digby, and Jeff, being bad characters and drinking underage. One night they
all went up to Greasy Lake, and they did any terrible act that was possible. Later that night, they were
driving and Digby spotted Tony Lovett s car. The story gets worse when the narrator loses his keys,
and realized it was not Tony s car. Digby and Jeff were involved to fight off the bad character and the
narrator had no choice but to use a tire iron he kept under the driver s seat and smash the bad character
head. Another car shows up to scene and everyone ran away, once the narrator ended up in the lake
and found the dead body floating. Right where ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the characters named Digby, goes to Cornell University, and has his father pay his tuition. The
second character Jeff, was thinking of quitting school to become a painter/musician/head shop. The
third character is the narrator, who always wears a torn up leather jacket and was also setting bad
example to his friends and anyone around. The narrator started his badness by sniffed glue, or
somebody claimed it was cocaine and drank gin and grape juice, (Boyle 687). Together the teenagers
were being rebellious looking for trouble in the summer evening. Throughout the story the characters
ran into some trouble, but what caught the narrator to change his appearance was when he saw the
dead body in the lake. When the group reunited by the next morning, they appear to be disappointed
of the action they had taken. The end of story changed the character s actions from being bad to
rebellious free. Boyle uses characters to provide a lesson for readers to understand that there are

Bad Knees Weaknesses
Bad Knees
1. What are bad knees?
Apart from aching backs, a significant number of people who exercise and workout, complain about
aching knees. Exercise, sports and other activities, can cause serious injuries, muscle strains, and
tendonitis. For some people, knee pain can become so severe that daily activities become limited.
Others might experience mild pain, which might be a hindrance to their healthy lifestyle.
If you are dealing with a knee problem, chances are very high that you are suffering from bad knees.
Bad knees involve sudden knee pain. Injuring the knees or overusing them is one of the main reasons
that lead to bad knees. Older people tend to experience knee pain more than the youth. Additionally,
overweight people are also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The method applied will normally depend on the reason behind the pain, as well as the extent of the
problem. If the problem is not severe, then there are simple home remedies applied and the problem
will be over within a few days. The most common home remedy is RICE. It stands for rest, ice,
compression, and elevation. These activities promote better knee movement while reducing the
swelling.
Medications are normally prescribed for pain relief or treat an underlying knee condition. Physical
therapy is another popular method. It is frequently used to fix bad knees. Sometimes, all you need is to
strengthen the muscles around the knees making it to withstand high activity levels. This helps in
avoiding further injuries, or even worsening the present injury.
Certain medical injections directly to the knee are prescribed, to alleviate the pain during certain knee
injuries. The most common injections used are lubricants and corticosteroids. Corticosteroids are used
to relieve inflammation and treat certain forms of arthritis. However, this needs to be done frequently,
to keep the condition in check. Doctors will usually prescribe lubricants, to add extra fluid in your
knee joints. Lubricants are familiar to knee fluid. They promote better movement and reduce

Flexible Racial Identity
Racial identity and flexibility may be interpreted in a variety of ways. However, in reality they go
hand in hand. Racial identity is defined as a sense of collective identity based on one s perception that
he or she shares a common heritage with a specific racial group. On the other hand, racial identity can
be considered as flexible or easily modified. Racial identity and flexibility intertwine because without
each other, self identifying would not be possible. In Hua Hsu s essay, The End of White America? he
argues in support of racial identity and flexibility complementing one another. This specifically shows
that as society further evolves from being ignorant of race and culture, the closer mankind gets to

Understanding the concept of racial identity and flexibility is imperative in order to see the gray areas
of life that help avoid the hardships that humans like McBride encountered. But sometimes different
minorities and white Americans tend to believe that by clinging on to the dominant race one may
move ahead. Not only does this promote racial supremacy, but clinging on to the idea of a dominant
race also promotes anti miscegenation. Racial supremacy is the belief that race is responsible for the
differences in human character and that a specific race is superior to others. This belief alone is bad,
however, paired with anti miscegenation which is a law from McBride s time period that prohibits
interracial relations or marriage, it has a synergistic effect which can be seen throughout his
experiences growing up as a black Jewish boy with a white mother. In the 1960s it was bad enough
being an African American because of the amount of judgment that was received for one s skin tone,
but even worse because of those who believed in white supremacy. Naturally, McBride has many
questions for his mother in regards to his identity and who he belongs to or should classify himself
with. This, in turn, causes a gap between McBride and his mother. A clear example can be seen when

The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow And Rip Van Winkle
Does the name Washington Irving ring a bell? The author of the immortalized tales, The Legend of
Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle. A man who has passed away almost two centuries ago, and still
yet, a man who has paved the way for American literature. Washington Irving was born in New York,
New York on April 3, 1783, and turned to writing once the family s import export business had failed.
Realizing that there would be no more means to support himself financially, Irving took up his talent
and his passion as his profession. Throughout his life, Irving traveled constantly; from London,
England, to Madrid, Spain, as well as the Western prairie frontiers of his homeland. His most
renowned work, The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent., is a Salmagundi (the title of another of
his books) of essays, short stories, and tales heavily influenced by German folklore. In this collection,
Irving frequently describes abstract ideas and ongoing situations with the expert use of analogies and
metaphors, while expressing the inner heart of his characters with such vivid intensity that they seem
to come alive. In addition, Irving proves himself a Jack of all trades by providing subtle satire for the
amusement of the reader. By exhibiting his prodigious expertise in these numerous fields of literature,
Irving establishes the fact that he is one of the greatest writers in history. As a reader, the frequency in
which Irving artfully describes a situation is distinguishable from most

Negative Effects Of Substance Abuse
Negative Effect of Substance Abuse
Substance abuse has effects on everyday users. The effects of using illegal and legal substances may
be fatal or even cause death. Alcohol and cigarettes are known as gateway drug that can lead someone
to more extreme drugs such as heroin, meth, and other harmful drugs (Myers 23 24). Gateway drugs
lead more people to use and abuse the drugs they find to cope with the life they have now or maybe in
the future. Substance abuse has negative effect on young teens and adults in the real world
socially,physically, and emotionally.
The first effect is the social effect this is more harmful than physical and emotional put together (
Social Effects of an Addiction ). Social effects can cause depression this can cause more effect like
suicidal thought. Drug abuse can also lead to crimes like stealing, underage drinking, and underage
buying (Myers 47). Leading to crimes are bad enough but getting caught up with trouble can ruin your
life ,you can be sent to jail for wanting to get high. Adding to this is that dropout drug users are much
more likely to be involved with violent criminal activity.(Ojeda 24). Young teens are suffering from
addiction in school this can cause teens to start failing or stop concentrating and learning you can not

The Great Depression Of The 1930 S
John Maynard Keynes was the most influential economist of the 1900 s and many of his ideas were
adopted by Franklin D. Roosevelt to combat the Great Depression of the 1930 s. With the passing of
the economic crisis in 2008, countless articles have been published supporting Keynes and his
economic thought. He originally investigated the origins of the Great Depression and remodeled the
field of economics with a basic conclusion: economies recover from downturns by spending money.
Keynes theorized that during financial downfalls, the public becomes frightened and decreases
spending, this leads to more layoffs, which in turn leads to an even greater decline in consumption,
creating a vicious cycle. Many of Keynes theories in The General Theory of Employment, Interest,
and Money (1936) are accurate, but are often overlooked in the legislative sector, due to political
agendas triumphing over logic. When the capital development of a country becomes a by product of
the activities of a casino, the job is likely to be ill done. The measure of success attained by Wall
Street . . . cannot be claimed as one of the outstanding triumphs of laissez faire capitalism. I will be
addressing Keynes concept of business cycles in The General Theory of Employment, Interest, and
Money mainly focusing on the 2008 financial crisis and analyze whether or not these arguments are
more or less accurate than his other conclusions. I strongly believe that many of his ideas are true as

Analysis of Lord Alfred Tennyson´s The Charge of the Light...
Boldly they rode and well, into the jaws of Death, into the mouth of Hell. That is an excerpt from Lord
Alfred Tennyson s Charge of the Light Brigade, a poem highlighting the honor and death of war. The
poem was chosen for this close reading essay because it has always been a personal favorite. It talks of
the real events of the Battle of Balaclava, yet speaks of the life all soldiers must live. The Charge of
the Light Brigade is a fascinating poem, both in the way it is formed, to the details of why it was
created. First, a brief explanation of the poem is in order. In it, six hundred soldiers ride for a league

That is why Lord Alfred Tennyson said that there were cannons to the right, the left, and in front of the
Light Brigade as it advanced. They were, as Lord Alfred Tennyson says, storm d at with shot and
shell, as they, charged an army. When they got to the enemy, all their sabers bare, flash d as they turn d
in air, and, right thro the line they broke; . Despite this success, the soldiers were left stranded and
outnumbered with no help coming because they had been sent on a mission that was impossible to
complete. The six hundred knew this, but did not speak a word of complaint, for it was, Theirs not to
reason why, theirs but to do and die; At the end, Lord Alfred Tennyson highlights the glory of their
charge, and that they should be honored for it. But why was this poem crafted? According to Sir
Charles Tennyson, the son of Lord Alfred Tennyson, his father wrote the poem as soon as he read
about the battle in the Times and it was published on December 9, 1854. With the rise of nationalism
starting in the 1700s, Lord Alfred Tennyson felt that it was his duty to honor his country. But, on the
other hand, the 243 soldiers who died because of the charge ordered by Lord Raglan also needed to be
honored. The poem was written as an attempt to balance the two,. This is evident in that he stresses
that the soldiers were sworn to obey their country, and that they were dedicated enough to pay

Models Of Abnormal Psychology
There are various models of abnormality. Such models include the biological model, psychodynamic

Models of abnormality explain the causes and treatments for all psychological illnesses. Psychologists
don t believe in all of these models, they are considered theories due to being based off a psychologist

The Article, Stereotypical Constructions Of The Maori ...
The article, Stereotypical Constructions of the Maori Race in the Media, written by Melanie Wall
(1997), can be summarised as an article focusing on the effect the colonisation of New Zealand had on
the Maori as a population. It mainly focuses on the way Maori have been imagined as the stereotypical
Black Other . It speaks of the perpetuation and (re)formation of Maori identities, including the way
Maori are constrained by their Black Other stereotype within New Zealand. The article talks about
representations of race through identity images , the effect of the Maori Renaissance (in particular its
effect on identity formations), and Maori Stereotypes in the Media.
In the beginning of the article, Wall talks about the categorisations of racialised discourse. She
mentions different justifications of stereotypes, and how they relate to what is referred to as the
construction of the new world . Wall believes that as well as the traditional old racisms, there is also a
new racism which is spoken about by Barker in 1981. She uses the example of Maori as the
unemployable/unemployed, which has became one of the main stereotypes, that construct the identity
of specific Maori.
Wall speaks about four main Maori stereotypes within the Media; The Comic Other, The Primitive
Natural Athlete, The Radical Political Activist, and The Quintessential Maori. These are shown in
fairly modern contexts as well as earlier contexts.

relationships and learning how to handle situations. In most schools, sports are a way to learn these
things by participating and making the best of it. Even if one is not good and they always get picked
last, sports can have an impact on their life to get better and shock their classmates. In the article I pity

her methods of handling opposing points, giving good sources, and writing an argument that is clearly
understood. Jemima Lewis, who hated sports in school, makes the argument that all schools should
ban sports in PE class because they are a waste of time, especially if someone is not good at them. She
was the kid that was always picked last and hoped that the ball never came her way. Jemima dreaded
going to PE class and throughout her childhood despised every sport that the school had forced the
kids to play during that one hour class. She came across an article written by Neil Rollings stating that
instead of having contact sports, schools should have Zumba or Yoga class so kids would not be
judged on their athletic ability and strengths. Jemima liked the idea that sports should be taken out of
the equation, but she found it worse that the schools would add a Zumba or Yoga class. Being a nerd

The Global Problem Of Global Trade Essay
There is no doubt that the importance of global trade is one of the most integral aspects out of which
human beings began their dominance of this planet. If history books tell us anything, it is that the
some of the most important and powerful countries had their beginnings in early global trade. One of
the most well known countries which took to the high seas in their venture to dominate global trade is
Portugal. Their story has been told and re told time and time again, always positioning them as a
leader during the Age of Discovery, a time in which finding the fastest overseas trade routes for items
such as spices lead to other discoveries as well. While Portugal will always be able to reflect on past
achievements and their footnote in the infancy of a global network, they still find themselves situated
as a participating member of a less glorious and more ominous trade venture. Portugal s role in the
global illegal trafficking of drugs and human beings is a controversial and hot button issue on a
multitude of socio political levels. While their inclusion into this dark world is by no means voluntary,
their participation in the illegal trafficking trade is a symptom of what could arguably be considered
one of their leading characteristics which allowed them to dominant the Golden Era; geographic
positionality. A recent document leaked from a global intelligence firm in 2012 succinctly sums up
their inherent problem:

was a direct result of the diminishing support for public executions. At the same time, the gradual shift
among elites and other government officials toward the abolishment of public executions was a
reaction against increasingly unruly crowds and the squeamishness toward the spectacle of the
execution (67). This book is organized into six sections with a total of 21 chapters. The first section
describes the mentality of the audience present at public executions, and the second section covers the
private opinions of plebian, or lower class citizens on execution. The third section defends Gatrell s
argument that the outlawing of public executions was more of a solution to large rioting crowds than it
was for humanitarian purposes. The fourth and fifth sections offer detailed accounts of specific court
cases that demonstrate the unfairness and ineffectiveness of the Blood Code and public execution in
England. Finally, the sixth section contains Gatrell s argument against those who deem themselves
reformers who, in Gatrell s opinion, only reformed out of self interest to dispel

Democracy Is Not A Democratic State Essay
It is often misinterpreted, the fact that the greatest nation on Earth, the United States, is governed as a
democratic state. Democracy is basically having control of an organization or group by the majority of
its members; however, this is not the case when addressing the United States. In fact, this country is
not a democratic state, but a constitutional republic. It is an enormous difference when brought to
light, since democracy does not really protect minorities, but expands power for the majority. On the
other hand, a constitutional republic is when a head of state and other officials are representatives of
the people, elected by them. These representatives are expected to perform their duties in the best
interest for the people; it also separates power into three branches known as, judicial, legislative and
executive. Having this in mind, citizens of the United States recognized their country as a freedom
nation, internationally; a lot of historians and politicians might share the same opinion. Unfortunately,
the government has been drifting away from its original purpose, to serve and protect individuals
before the majority s interest. When it comes down to deciding whose rights should trump the others,
majority or minority, there is absolutely no doubt, that minorities hold the title, since it addresses
individual basic rights that contribute progress to the community to further evade a violation of basic
rights towards any individual.

Essay about My Mother’s Dining Room
My favorite place in my mother s house is the dining room. Every year, my mother s house is chosen,
by all of our family members, to host the holiday dinners and parties because of how elegant her
dining room is. As you walk thru the long narrow hallway on your way to the dining room, you see
huge pictures of family members hung on both sides of the smooth colorful wall. It seems like you re
walking forever, then you finally reach the door of the infamous dining room.
You re first greeted by the tall, wide, almond color and trimmed in gold door.
The door knob is always cold to touch like you re touching a block of ice. When you walk into the
door the room is so cold, it feels like you re standing outside in a snow storm, in ... Show more content

It looks as if it s the same size as a football field. . As you step in, you immediately sink a couple of
inches because of how plush the caramel colored carpet is. The long glamorous chandler hangs from
the high vaulted ceilings. Immediately to your left is a marble sink, with silver pull out fixtures and
deep sink bowls. On the sink there is an automatic soap dispenser on the right and an automatic hand
dryer on the left. Both made of sterling silver. The burnt orange and brown colors on the wall are so
bright, it looks like the sun is shinning directly above the room. The walls are covered with many
paintings. Some of famous artists that color the walls are Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, and Pablo
Picasso. Many of the others are from unknown starving artist. To the far right of the room there is a
solid wood bar hutch that looks as tall as an oak tree. Any drink that you can think of, is there in that
bar.
The center of the room is what draws your attention. It leaves your mouth open in amazement. The
long rectangle table is made of strong mahogany solid wood, trimmed in a thin layer of gold. The top
of the table is filled with brownish marble. The long back and tall legged chairs are also made of
mahogany wood. The cushion on the chairs are soft like down alternative pillows. The square crystal
clear dinner plate, trimmed in platinum, sit in front of the 30 chairs that surround the table. A fresh
mixed green centerpiece is in the center of the

  • 2. Casey And Goliath Similarities In the poem Casey at the bat and the story David and Goliath there are similarities and differences. The characters Casey and David have similarities. One of these similarities is that they are both confident. In David and Goliath it says, Today the Lord will help me defeat you. I ll knock you down and cut off your head, and I ll feed the bodies of the other Philistine soldiers to the birds and wild animals. This shows that David is confident that the lord will help him kill Goliath. In Casey at the bat it says, Close by the sturdy batsman the ball unheeded sped That ain t my style, said Casey. This shows that because Casey was confident he thought that the way the ball was thrown wasn t his style. The next similarity between ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In David and Goliath it says, The king is offering a big reward to the man who kills Goliath. That man will even get to marry the king s daughter, and no one in his family will ever have to pay taxes again. This shows why David wanted to try and kill Goliath. The last similarity is that both characters are brave. In Casey at the bat it says, That ain t my style, said Casey. Strike one, the umpire said. Also it says, But Casey still ignored it, and the umpire said, Strike two. This shows that Casey is brave because he let two of the three balls go by him. In David and Goliath it says that David goes out there with only a piece of wood while Goliath has a sword and shield. This proves that David is brave because He went to kill someone with a sword, with a piece of wood and a rock. Both of the characters also have many things that make them different. The first thing that makes them different is that Casey had many cheering fans to help with his confidence whereas no one was cheering for David. In the poem Casey at the bat it states, And when, responding to the cheers, he lightly doffed his hat, No stranger in the crowd could doubt twas Casey at the bat. Ten thousand eyes were on him as he rubbed his hands with dirt; Five thousand tongues applauded when he wiped them on his shirt. This part of the poem tells that five thousand people were there ... • 3. Taking a Look at Wikileaks Wikileaks, cofounded in 2006 by editor in chief Julian Assange, is a site designed to announce and publicize sensitive information. The goal of Wikileaks is to provide protection for journalists, citizens, and anyone who might need to be protected from the free based or sensitive information they upload to the site. Wikileaks is protected by a network of software, anonymous postal drops, and lawyers, operating on a policy of secrecy to keep all of its posters safe from possible reprisals. I believe Wikileaks is in the right, as it allows its users to expose sensitive information and secrets that citizens need to know about. Governments have been criticizing some of the content posted, however, there is little legally that they can do. Wikileaks is essentially another branch or avenue of the public press, and there is no official secrets act to stop information from being posted. There are people doing pre publication reviews of articles posted; people who have a vested interest in ensuring the accuracy of the material. In recent years, Wikileaks has acquired mixed public reception, receiving numerous awards and appraisal, as well as harsh criticism. In 2008 and 2009, Wikileaks received the New Media Award, and in 2010, it was listed as a website that could change the way the news works. It was praised as a tool to empower citizens to voice their opinions and report the truth. However, the site received criticism for defacing the value of a journalist. Journalists ... • 4. Proposed Cities For Expansion Teams With growing interest in a sport comes more fans in new places. In an effort to grow their franchise, the NHL has been known to add expansion teams. The league started in 1942 with just six teams known as The Original Six and has expanded to 30 teams since then with the last teams being added in 2000 (Various). Sixteen years after the last expansion teams were added, the league is looking to add more. There are four proposed cities for expansion teams: Las Vegas, Seattle, Quebec City, and a second team in Toronto. Just because a city is a proposed city does not mean that they will be getting a team. There is a selection process that includes a committee approved by the NHL Commissioner, Gary Bettman, and a very high expansion fee of $500 million. Adding new expansion teams to the league is a bigger deal than it may seem and takes a good bit of effort: the perfect market must be chosen, an arena deal has to be worked out, a staff needs to be hired and prepared, team details need to be finalized, financial situations have to be looked at, and the remaining teams have to prepare for the addition of a new team. For the other teams, this means signing more players to no move clauses or even having them waived so they are prepared for the expansion draft. Despite the looming idea of everything that needs to be taken care of, the league has decided on and approved a new expansion team: Las Vegas. Las Vegas is what many may call the perfect opportunity for the NHL. There are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Othello s Influence On The World Of Opera Verdi s Othello has had a profound influence on the world of opera, and considered by many critics to be his best work. Othello has been performed throughout the world, debuting in over 25 countries within the first fifty years of its creation (Stanford). It has been performed all over the globe by world renowned operettists, in theatres such as the Lincoln Center in New York, the Sydney Opera House in Sydney, and the Bolshoi in Russia. Othello is about a general who is led to believe his wife is cheating on him, when in reality she is not, and deceived by Iago, a man he trusted. Othello has two love duets between the same characters, but with very different moods and relationships, which are portrayed through the dialogue, the stage actions, and most importantly the musical strategies employed. The opera Othello was written by Verdi, one of the most prominent opera writers in the late 1800 s. He was born in 1813 in northern Italy, however, most of his work took place in Milan, Italy. This is where, on February 5th of 1887, Othello was first performed, at the Teatro alla Scala (Stanford). Verdi s opera Othello is based off of Shakespeare s play Othello, which was written in 1622. Verdi based many of his operas off of Shakespeare s plays, such as his opera Macbeth that was based on the play Macbeth, first performed in 1847, and his opera Falstaff, based on the play The Merry Wives of Windsor, first performed in 1893. Case analysis from ego psychology perspectives Essay Introduction This paper, divided into two parts, is intended to understand April s case in a thoughtfully eclectic way from a social work perspective by applying human behavior theories. The first part shows the use of Ego Psychology to illustrate how loss from April s father s death interrupted her development by disrupting her ego function. The second part shows the assessment of April s biological, psychological, and social emotional development, the ecological factors which affected her development, and the cultural stereotype expectation on normal development. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Bowlby pointed out that if children are not given accurate information about a death, they cannot grieve appropriately. The family did not give April a chance to explore and express her grief over the loss. These choices would impact her ego function. Since she could not make sense of the situation, she could not modulate her affect and behavior in order to cope with the pain of loss. She automatically and unconsciously used one of the most important ego functions defense mechanism to cope with the trauma. She went into denial, which interfered with her reality testing. She was told that her father went to heaven, which, to her, meant that he was in a distant place. As Silverman, Nickman, and Worden (1992) stated, April, as other children typically display, developed an inner construction of her father that assisted her in coping with her losses and with all of the ensuing changes in her life. She even developed magic thinking : a fantasy that her father would return as shown in the picture she drew of her father coming in and out of the house by using the ladder. But with time passing, the reality of her father s absence becoming increasingly permanent was reinforced. She could not always hold her sadness and fear as shown through her nightmares, crying, or screaming. • 10. Arsenic Contamination Essay Introduction Beside the natural activities, almost all human activities also have potential contribution to Arsenic contamination in the environment as side effects occurs in many parts of the world and is a global problem. In many areas As level has crossed the safe threshold level. Large scale groundwater pollution by geogenic arsenic (As) in West Bengal and Bangladesh has recently promoted this element into an environmental pollutant of prime concern. Epidemiological studies have documented various adverse effects on the human population. Arsenic contaminated soils, sediments, and sludge are the major sources of arsenic contamination of the food chain, surface water, groundwater, and drinking water (WT Frankenberger Arshad, 2002). Other potential sources of arsenic contamination are the chemicals used extensively in agriculture as pesticides, insecticides, defoliants, wood preservatives, and soil sterilants (AZCUE NRIAGU, 1994). Currently available techniques for the remediation of As contaminated soil are very expensive and time consuming, often hazardous to workers, and capable of producing secondary wastes (LOMBI, ZHAO, DUNHAM, MCGRATH, 2000). Phytoextraction, the use of green plants to clean up contaminated soil, has attracted attention as an environmentally friendly, low input remediation technique. It uses plants that extract heavy metals from the soil and accumulate it in the harvestable, above ground biomass. Several comprehensive reviews on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Keynesian Fiscal Policy Solution Aggregate Demand The Keynesian Fiscal Policy Solution Aggregate Demand Problems The 1920 s witnessed a rise of a new economic policy which had not yet been seen prior to the great depression. Before the great depression, the widely accepted economic policy which was implemented and practiced around the world was called Natural Economics. Natural Economics was a fiscal policy that embodied the idea that the economy would eventually take care of itself and run freely without the government s influence. In circumstances; such as war, Keynesians economic policy provides a near perfect solution for boosting an economy. However, without a war to force an increase in demand, an increase in government spending would snowball into a business cycle of aggregate demand problems. Aggregate Demand is the total demand for goods and services within a market and consists of four main components; investment, consumption, government spending and net exports. These coincide directly with Keynesian s economic fiscal policy. For boosting aggregate demand is the primary focus and supposed key to Keynesians fiscal policy solution. Since aggregate demand coincides directly with Keynesian s economic policy, all of the policy s long term problems become aggregate demand problems. With Keynes policy s increase in government spending comes an initial boost in consumer spending which then boosts aggregate demand. Businesses increase supply and expand to meet this boosted demand. However once the fiscal stimulus package runs out, the once increased aggregate demand begins to decrease. The federal reserve begins to then print more money in order to compensate for the recently depleted fiscal package in order to maintain the aggregate demand levels. Additional printing of money lowers the value of the dollar thus causing inflation. As inflation rates rise in the economy consumers purchasing power decreases. By observing myself and my peers I have developed an opinion, this opinion was reinforced by reading How to Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas Foster. There are different stages of comprehension. Authors and readers utilize both experiences and prior knowledge quite often. My understanding of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man By James Joyce was vastly impacted after reading Foster s book. Instead of just reading the novel, I dove deeper into the text. I find comfort in the thought that everything in the world is interconnected, but I never made that connection with literature. When a reader discerns the individuality of the text while relating with personal experience, the reading gains value. It is no secret that Joyce is a master of symbolism and allusion. The first stage of comprehension is to see as much information as possible. Next a reader learns how to pick out more important facts. You know you are getting somewhere when you notice rhetorical devices while continuing to absorb the pleasure of the story. That destination was an eternity spent either in heaven or in hell. There was nothing one could do to earn a spot in heaven God freely forgave the sins of some, and they could enter heaven. Luther disagreed strongly with the Roman Catholic teaching that there is also a place called purgatory, because purgatory is not explicitly mentioned in the Bible. The belief in purgatory developed over the course of the middle Ages, driven by the logic of the Catholic system of sanctification. Those who were baptized and thus cleansed of the stain of original sin still had to pay the debt for the offense of sin to a perfect God. In addition, any additional sins must be paid for. This means that Ohio experienced a decline in manufacturing jobs. While this is a simple definition, the origins of the term deindustrialization gives a deeper, more pejorative meaning to the term. This darker meaning to the term is perhaps more effectively conveyed through the term rust belt. After Ohio wen through the process of deindustrialization, the lack of industrial jobs in a once booming industrial area left many factories empty and decommissioned. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The term traces its roots back to World War II. The concept of deindustrialization began in Nazi Germany. The Nazis described the areas that they had invaded in conquered in this way. This is because they eliminated any industry from the areas that they took over, forcing these states to become dependent upon Germany for economic and industrial development. This philosophy was also used as a punishment for those countries, showing the power of Nazi Germany. After the end of the war, the Allies began to use the term deindustrialization , as well. Essentially taking the definition from the Nazis, they used this term in discussions of how to punish Nazi Germany in post war rebuilding plans. Regardless of who was using the term in World War II, there was always a negative connotation attached to it. Rather than simply saying that it meant a decline in manufacturing jobs for an area, the term was used as a punishment and a show of power. In its origins, deindustrialization was used by the winners of a conflict to describe how they would take away industry from the losing nation or state. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This heresy is the idea that there is a spiritual reward for depriving the physical body of comfort or pleasure. The Catholics who endured the outbreaks of bubonic plague in the Middle Ages sometimes resorted to self flagellation, a practice of whipping or beating one s self in order to gain favor with God (and presumably avoid plague). Catholics have long practiced similar traditions, with some devout Catholics praying on particularly uncomfortable prayer mats or refusing red meat on certain days. Some Catholic clergy go so far as to wear burlap undergarments, so as to suffer with Christ and perhaps gain favor with God. This heretical doctrine declares the atonement by Christ to be an incomplete one, and contradicts His final words, the confirmation that It is finished (John 19:30b). The particular incarnation of this heresy that pervades even the evangelical churches of today comes to light in those churches condemnation of various things, including drugs and alcohol. Now, as described above, all things created by God in the beginning were good. The use of the earth s resources was given to Man, and with it responsibility. The scriptures indicate that alcohol can be a deceiver. Immoderate use of alcohol leads to drunkenness, which the scriptures indeed condemn (Galatians 5:19 21). • 26. Flexible Racial Identity Racial identity and flexibility may be interpreted in a variety of ways. However, in reality they go hand in hand. Racial identity is defined as a sense of collective identity based on one s perception that he or she shares a common heritage with a specific racial group. On the other hand, racial identity can be considered as flexible or easily modified. Racial identity and flexibility intertwine because without each other, self identifying would not be possible. In Hua Hsu s essay, The End of White America? he argues in support of racial identity and flexibility complementing one another. Understanding the concept of racial identity and flexibility is imperative in order to see the gray areas of life that help avoid the hardships that humans like McBride encountered. But sometimes different minorities and white Americans tend to believe that by clinging on to the dominant race one may move ahead. Not only does this promote racial supremacy, but clinging on to the idea of a dominant race also promotes anti miscegenation. Racial supremacy is the belief that race is responsible for the differences in human character and that a specific race is superior to others. This belief alone is bad, however, paired with anti miscegenation which is a law from McBride s time period that prohibits interracial relations or marriage, it has a synergistic effect which can be seen throughout his experiences growing up as a black Jewish boy with a white mother. In the 1960s it was bad enough being an African American because of the amount of judgment that was received for one s skin tone, but even worse because of those who believed in white supremacy. Naturally, McBride has many questions for his mother in regards to his identity and who he belongs to or should classify himself with. This, in turn, causes a gap between McBride and his mother. A man who has passed away almost two centuries ago, and still yet, a man who has paved the way for American literature. Washington Irving was born in New York, New York on April 3, 1783, and turned to writing once the family s import export business had failed. Realizing that there would be no more means to support himself financially, Irving took up his talent and his passion as his profession. Throughout his life, Irving traveled constantly; from London, England, to Madrid, Spain, as well as the Western prairie frontiers of his homeland. His most renowned work, The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent., is a Salmagundi (the title of another of his books) of essays, short stories, and tales heavily influenced by German folklore. In this collection, Irving frequently describes abstract ideas and ongoing situations with the expert use of analogies and metaphors, while expressing the inner heart of his characters with such vivid intensity that they seem to come alive. In addition, Irving proves himself a Jack of all trades by providing subtle satire for the amusement of the reader. • 31. The Great Depression Of The 1930 S John Maynard Keynes was the most influential economist of the 1900 s and many of his ideas were adopted by Franklin D. Roosevelt to combat the Great Depression of the 1930 s. With the passing of the economic crisis in 2008, countless articles have been published supporting Keynes and his economic thought. He originally investigated the origins of the Great Depression and remodeled the field of economics with a basic conclusion: economies recover from downturns by spending money. Keynes theorized that during financial downfalls, the public becomes frightened and decreases spending, this leads to more layoffs, which in turn leads to an even greater decline in consumption, creating a vicious cycle. Many of Keynes theories in The General Theory of Employment, Interest, and Money (1936) are accurate, but are often overlooked in the legislative sector, due to political agendas triumphing over logic. When the capital development of a country becomes a by product of the activities of a casino, the job is likely to be ill done. The Charge of the Light Brigade is a fascinating poem, both in the way it is formed, to the details of why it was created. First, a brief explanation of the poem is in order. When they got to the enemy, all their sabers bare, flash d as they turn d in air, and, right thro the line they broke; . Despite this success, the soldiers were left stranded and outnumbered with no help coming because they had been sent on a mission that was impossible to complete. The six hundred knew this, but did not speak a word of complaint, for it was, Theirs not to reason why, theirs but to do and die; At the end, Lord Alfred Tennyson highlights the glory of their charge, and that they should be honored for it. But why was this poem crafted? According to Sir Charles Tennyson, the son of Lord Alfred Tennyson, his father wrote the poem as soon as he read about the battle in the Times and it was published on December 9, 1854. With the rise of nationalism starting in the 1700s, Lord Alfred Tennyson felt that it was his duty to honor his country. But, on the other hand, the 243 soldiers who died because of the charge ordered by Lord Raglan also needed to be honored. The poem was written as an attempt to balance the two,. The article, Stereotypical Constructions of the Maori Race in the Media, written by Melanie Wall (1997), can be summarised as an article focusing on the effect the colonisation of New Zealand had on the Maori as a population. It mainly focuses on the way Maori have been imagined as the stereotypical Black Other . It speaks of the perpetuation and (re)formation of Maori identities, including the way Maori are constrained by their Black Other stereotype within New Zealand. The article talks about representations of race through identity images , the effect of the Maori Renaissance (in particular its effect on identity formations), and Maori Stereotypes in the Media. In the beginning of the article, Wall talks about the categorisations of racialised discourse. She mentions different justifications of stereotypes, and how they relate to what is referred to as the construction of the new world . Wall believes that as well as the traditional old racisms, there is also a new racism which is spoken about by Barker in 1981. She uses the example of Maori as the unemployable/unemployed, which has became one of the main stereotypes, that construct the identity of specific Maori. The Global Problem Of Global Trade Essay There is no doubt that the importance of global trade is one of the most integral aspects out of which human beings began their dominance of this planet. If history books tell us anything, it is that the some of the most important and powerful countries had their beginnings in early global trade. One of the most well known countries which took to the high seas in their venture to dominate global trade is Portugal. Their story has been told and re told time and time again, always positioning them as a leader during the Age of Discovery, a time in which finding the fastest overseas trade routes for items such as spices lead to other discoveries as well. While Portugal will always be able to reflect on past achievements and their footnote in the infancy of a global network, they still find themselves situated as a participating member of a less glorious and more ominous trade venture. Portugal s role in the global illegal trafficking of drugs and human beings is a controversial and hot button issue on a multitude of socio political levels. While their inclusion into this dark world is by no means voluntary, their participation in the illegal trafficking trade is a symptom of what could arguably be considered one of their leading characteristics which allowed them to dominant the Golden Era; geographic positionality. Analysis Of Vic Gatrell s The Hanging Tree Essay Vic Gatrell s The Hanging Tree explores the opinions of average and lower class citizens on public hangings on England from 1770 until 1868 rather than the opinions of bureaucrats, royalty, and other elites as many similar histories do. He argues that the opinions of lower class citizens grew more and more unfavorable during this time, and the movement of executions to a private setting in the 1860s was a direct result of the diminishing support for public executions. At the same time, the gradual shift among elites and other government officials toward the abolishment of public executions was a reaction against increasingly unruly crowds and the squeamishness toward the spectacle of the execution (67). This book is organized into six sections with a total of 21 chapters. The first section describes the mentality of the audience present at public executions, and the second section covers the private opinions of plebian, or lower class citizens on execution. The third section defends Gatrell s argument that the outlawing of public executions was more of a solution to large rioting crowds than it was for humanitarian purposes. The fourth and fifth sections offer detailed accounts of specific court cases that demonstrate the unfairness and ineffectiveness of the Blood Code and public execution in England. Finally, the sixth section contains Gatrell s argument against those who deem themselves reformers who, in Gatrell s opinion, only reformed out of self interest to dispel ... • 41. Democracy Is Not A Democratic State Essay It is often misinterpreted, the fact that the greatest nation on Earth, the United States, is governed as a democratic state. Democracy is basically having control of an organization or group by the majority of its members; however, this is not the case when addressing the United States. In fact, this country is not a democratic state, but a constitutional republic. It is an enormous difference when brought to light, since democracy does not really protect minorities, but expands power for the majority. On the other hand, a constitutional republic is when a head of state and other officials are representatives of the people, elected by them. These representatives are expected to perform their duties in the best interest for the people; it also separates power into three branches known as, judicial, legislative and executive. Having this in mind, citizens of the United States recognized their country as a freedom nation, internationally; a lot of historians and politicians might share the same opinion. Unfortunately, the government has been drifting away from its original purpose, to serve and protect individuals before the majority s interest. When it comes down to deciding whose rights should trump the others, majority or minority, there is absolutely no doubt, that minorities hold the title, since it addresses individual basic rights that contribute progress to the community to further evade a violation of basic rights towards any individual.
