Paper presented at EDEN 2015 International Conference in Budapest 14-17 June 2016
The concept of virtual mobility can be defined as a set of ICT supported activities that realise or facilitate international, collaborative experiences in a context of teaching and/or learning it. Since 2008, the authors have offered TalkTech, an online collaboration enabling students from their universities to research technology trends, share their experiences, and create multimedia objects to present their findings (Frydenberg & Andone, 2010). As members of international teams, they must produce a viable digital media product created working with international partners located on another continent. Throughout the six-week project they must select appropriate digital tools to support with their communication and collaboration efforts, manage time zones and technologies, and track their progress. The purpose of this collaborative project is to create a controlled work environment which models the global enterprise, where the use of web-based collaboration and communication tools are commonplace. The analysis in this paper will show how this project supports Wheeler's characteristics of digital literacy (Wheeler, 2012).

A Tool for Determining an Optimal Model of Student Engagement in Wikis for Le...Cristina Felea
Paper presented at the 10th eLearning and Software for Education Conference - eLSE 2014, Bucharest 24-25 April
The problem of learners’ engagement is receiving renewed attention against the background of the transition from traditional to technology enhanced learning environments and the ensuing shift from the transmission to the (co)construction of knowledge model in teaching/learning.
Recent studies on the use of social media for academic purposes have also revealed transformations in student and teacher roles and behavior. This study is part of an ongoing research on various pedagogical aspects related to early adoption of Web 2.0 tools (wikis) in a blended language learning program of English for Academic Purposes attended by undergraduate students in social sciences in a Romanian university.
The authors’ prior research on student behavior suggested low participation levels during the semester and high activity under the pressure of finals. Our current objective is to continue the research in an attempt to provide a more accurate learner profile that could help teachers improve the learning environment to further activate their students.
We applied the ROC analysis, a cost/benefit analysis of diagnostic decision making, in order to diagnose the features of students who would use successfully a Web 2.0 tool for learning. The study aims to exemplify how ROC analysis can be used to offer a classification of students with positive/negative inclinations to adopt a Web 2.0 tool by eliminating the false positives, respectively the false negatives.
Consequently, it may become a tool to select a possible optimal model to be considered in the process of needs analysis and of taking important decisions regarding teaching methods, course contents and design.

[insert period joke here] Researching Menstruation OnlineAstrid Bigoni
This is a presentation of the research project [insert period joke here] Researching Menstruation Online, conducted during the Digital Methods Summer School 2013 in Amsterdam. The project aimed to unravel and understand how menstruation is described and discussed across different languages, platforms and cultures online.
In many respects, menstruation is still a taboo in Western societies. Women are encouraged to hide their menstruation and not talk about it in public. In the public sphere there seem to be two dominant approaches and discourses surrounding menstruation. One is a pathological perspective, which frames menstruation as something that needs medication; either in order for women to cope with their menstruation, or for women to get rid of their menstruation all together. The other sees menstruation as a hygiene problem that needs to be fixed.
We aimed to reveal the extent to which these constructed discourses are replicated and/or challenged across different cultures, languages and platforms online.

Real-time Data De-duplication using Locality-sensitive Hashing powered by Sto...DECK36
Data de-duplication, in our case also called "Entity Matching", is not just about reducing multiple instances of the same item to one in order to save some space. It is a challenging task with many practical applications from health care to fraud prevention: "Is this person the same patient as ten years ago, but has moved in the meantime?", "Is this personalized spam mail the same email that was sent to many others, yet customized in each case?", or "Was there a spike resp. what is the base level of similar looking account creations?". In the age of Big Data, we do have the data to answer such questions, but heuristically comparing each item to all other items quickly becomes technically prohibitive for huge data sets.
In this session, we will have a look at past practises and current developments in the world of data de-duplication. After that, we will look at how to leverage locality-sensitive hashing algorithmically to reduce the amount of comparisons to a workable level. A demonstration will feature our implementation of that algorithm on top of Riak and Storm. The session will then finish with an overview of experiments and results using that system on different datasets, including browser fingerprints, tweets, and news articles.

The ASU introduces a new model for recognizing credit losses on financial instruments based on an estimate of current expected credit losses. The new model will apply to: (1) loans, accounts receivable, trade receivables, and other financial assets measured at amortized cost, (2) loan commitments and certain other off-balance sheet credit exposures, (3) debt securities and other financial assets measured at fair value through other comprehensive income, and (4) beneficial interests in securitized financial assets.

In order to better integrate OERs and MOOCs in traditional higher education on a large scale and maybe to use MOOCs as a method to offer new training opportunities to the business world, universities need to adopt clear policies on the accreditation of MOOCs and OERs. The three models proposed for the integration of MOOCs and OERs need to be included in university policies. The lessons learned until now show that a strategic approach, involving policies and quality validation are important but that clear guidelines and support also need to be given to professors and students, for universities to be more influential in the digital world.
Today's students will learn independently and digitally throughout their lives. They will therefore need to develop a robust set of Open Life Long Learning Student skills. When they graduate, they will need to be ready to identify, access, learn, analyse, apply and practice new knowledge using different media, information channels, and communication tools to enhance their skills and develop their careers. But does traditional higher education prepare them for this? Do we use models, methods and tools for learning and knowledge acquisition that will develop their skills as creative, independent, confident learners? Are they equipped for learning in a classroom-less society throughout their lives?

This paper presents the findings of a pilot to implement a blended learning model by merging content from MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) into a traditional higher education Masters Course. The main objective of the pilot was to examine how a MOOC based flipped classroom model might improve student learning and skills acquisition in a traditional higher education course, as well as to analyze the MOOCs impact on students’ learning behavior. The pilot included MOOCs from different online platforms, none of which were taught or developed by the tutors. Final reports, survey, interviews and report analysis are the techniques used to evaluate this pilot. This paper presents the results of technical and usability investigation, based on students’ findings. Outlines indicate that inclusion of high-quality MOOCs in a higher education flipped classroom can produce significant benefits in transforming the student learning process and the skills they acquire.

OERs and MOOCs – the Romanian experience Diana Andone
OERs and MOOCs – the Romanian experience paper, authors Radu Vasiu, Diana Andone, presented at International Conference on Web & Open Access to Learning, 24-27 November 2014, Dubai, UEA.
Using Open Educational Resources (OER) provides opportunities for collaboration both in the classroom and beyond. Started in 2008 and gathering momentum over the past two years, now an online phenomenon, MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) reunite different perspectives over a globalized online learning. The paper analyses the use of OER and MOOCs in different study cases in Romanian universities. Several OER initiatives resulted from the over 1000 academia involved in the DidaTec lifelong learning and training for higher education teachers in the technical sciences and engineering field as a training course for university professors in 12 universities, within the aim of improving the use of ICT in higher education. Four universities from Romania started a Romanian MOOC environment, the UniCampus, which provides free access to valuable education in Romanian language, presented by well-known professors. The evaluation and quality assurance challenges of the Unicampus are mainly due to the restrictive educational setting in Romania. Two study cases on blending MOOCs in traditional higher education courses at undergraduate and Master level are also analysed from the impact on students’ motivation. Integrating MOOCs in blended learning empower students with new abilities and requires a new and open teacher model.
Make the difference: ICDE Featured session at the Annual Online Learning Cons...icdeslides
While education is more popular than ever, huge gaps have to be tackled to achieve quality education for all, Trends and cases in different parts of the world will be highlighted. What is the impact of Open Education Resources, OER, and ODE? And how ICDE can contribute to a future oriented, collaborative platform for global educational achievements? MOOCs is discussed as a possible enabler for a new pedagogy.
Education and learning is probably that single phenomenon that has the greatest impact on humans and societies, in particular in a long-term perspective (OECD 2014).
Grand challenge number one is to breach the trend preventing developing countries, in particular South of Sahara, taking part in the global knowledge revolution. Everyone aspiring for higher education should have the right to affordable access. This is grand challenge number two. And it cannot be met without open education and technology enhanced learning.
Three messages:
• Senior management in education needs to innovate from within to open up education.
• Governments must take firm decision on holistic policies for open and distance education.
• Stakeholders should team up meeting the two grand challenges through open education and technology enhanced learning.

Building up a Digital Education Eco-systemDiana Andone
Building up a Digital Education Eco-system teh Politehnica University Experience
by Dr. Andrei Ternauciuc, Dr. Diana Andone
Distance education and online learning history at the Politehnica University of Timisoara was initiated more than two decades ago, with a vision on opening up traditional Romanian higher education. And more than half of this time was invested in Moodle's challenging orbit and its development. Launching the Virtual Campus for Digital Students - ViCaDiS platform in 2007, as a result of our research, continuing with the highly successful Virtual Campus of the Politehnica University of Timisoara (CVUPT) platform, and getting to our latest Moodle-based endeavour - the Open Virtual Mobility Learning Hub, we grew alongside Moodle's ever-helpful community. Thanks to its open status, we were able to mould the world's leading learning environment into the tool most of our students know and (mostly) love. The road has not always been easy, but thanks to the well-meaning people behind the plugins and the forum posts, we were able to accomplish our learning process goals of honing a complex and complete instrument for online learning. We also learned to fend for ourselves by adapting or even designing from the ground up the functionalities we greatly required, always for the benefit of our students. Our actions have always been towards introducing, supporting and advocating the open education principles in our work, research and development. In the last months, due to the pandemic time and the complete move to online education, we performed a major scalability of our learning environments into what it is now the Politehnica University of Timisoara Digital Eco-system. This scalability and increase will be presented at the Global MoodleMoot 2020. https://moodle.com/events/global-online/

Creating Virtual Reality in a Business and Technology Educational Context Diana Andone
Creating Virtual Reality in a Business and Technology Educational Context, presentation by Diana Andone and Mark Frydenberg, at The 4th International AR and VR Conference, 21 - 22 June 2018, Manchester, UK.
Virtual reality applications have enabled students to experience the world through visually immersive experiences in business and educational contexts. This paper shares the results of a collaborative project (TalkTech) in which students from universities in the United States and Romania work together to study uses for virtual reality in a business context, and then create their own VR scenes for a selected business or industry. In doing so, students follow a learning scenario in which they explore the capabilities of virtual reality in both business and technology educational contexts.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
